Music In The 1920s Essay

Music is a way of expressing feelings and is made for celebrations, entertainment, and dancing. Music is a great way to connect with others. Leading up to the 1920s, the most popular kinds of music were classical, opera, and ragtime; classical music is symphonic, usually with a full orchestra, opera is a form of theater where a song tells a story through lyrics, and ragtime has a syncopated or ragged rhythm. There are many forms of music aside from these three, but those genres of music helped pave the way for how music is in the 1920s and up to today.

Music Argumentative Essay

When analyzing what music does to a person’s mood, I thought about the possibility that the person changes it themselves. “It (sound & music) also trims complications after heart attack, calms anxiety, slows breathing and increases production of endorphins, the body 's natural painkillers. The Importance Of Without Music, Life Would Be A Mistake

“Without music, life would be a mistake.” Friedrich Nietzsche was born many years after the great composer Wolfgang Mozart, however, both men share one common ideal: their love for music. Mozart was a revolutionary composer of his time that continued to astound the public of the classical time. His fantastic ability to be so versatile in his writing allowed him to write in every popular form of music of his classical time; he even developed and popularized the piano concerto. Not having TV, Radio and other recorded technologies would mean that myself and others would have to go to places like the Kimmel center or and opera house in order to hear the wonderful works of composers/musicians, everything would have to be done in a live setting, similar to the Renaissance period where all music was heard at a live setting, which for them would have been either the church, the courthouse, or possible the street corner where a performing musician might perform. Music’s function in the Renaissance was mainly centered around the church, with less emphasis being placed on secular music, while in modern times music as stated before, has become an art of many forms; ranging from Rock and Roll and Metal to Gospel, Rap and Hip-Hop and Jazz. For me personally though, church music like those of the Middle Ages , is what I put my focus on. As a musician, it is the church music that I love the most, which makes me feel in a way like a contemporary Renaissance

The Marginalian

Nietzsche on the Power of Music

By maria popova.

a world without music essay

Among them was the great German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche (October 15, 1844–August 25, 1900). He who proclaimed that “god is dead” and believed that nothing worthwhile is easy found in music life’s sole unmerited grace.

a world without music essay

In an autobiographical fragment quoted in Julian Young’s altogether fantastic Friedrich Nietzsche: A Philosophical Biography ( public library ), the German intellectual goliath writes:

God has given us music so that above all it can lead us upwards. Music unites all qualities: it can exalt us, divert us, cheer us up, or break the hardest of hearts with the softest of its melancholy tones. But its principal task is to lead our thoughts to higher things, to elevate, even to make us tremble… The musical art often speaks in sounds more penetrating than the words of poetry, and takes hold of the most hidden crevices of the heart… Song elevates our being and leads us to the good and the true. If, however, music serves only as a diversion or as a kind of vain ostentation it is sinful and harmful.

Nietzsche wrote these lines two months before his fourteenth birthday — a detail doubly poignant when contrasted with the “vain ostentations” marketed to teenagers today. But his profound reverence for music never left him. Toward the end of his life, he immortalized it in an aphorism included in his 1889 book Twilight of the Idols, or, How to Philosophize with a Hammer :

What trifles constitute happiness! The sound of a bagpipe. Without music life would be a mistake. The German imagines even God as a songster.

Complement the wholly illuminating Friedrich Nietzsche: A Philosophical Biography with the great philosopher’s ten rules for writers and his heartening 1882 New Year’s resolution , then revisit these seven essential books about music and the mind .

How to Write a Music Essay with Steps

Writing music essays is definitely not rocket science, so don't be afraid. It's just like writing any other paper, and a music essay outline looks like any other essay structure.

music steps

  • Start by choosing a music essay topic. You can use our list above to get inspired. Choose a topic about music that feels more relevant and less researched so you can add brand-new insights. As we discussed, your music essay can be just about anything; it can be a concert report or an analytical paper about the evolution of music.
  • Continue by researching the topic. Gather all the relevant materials and information for your essay on music and start taking notes. You can use these notes as building blocks for the paper. Be prepared; even for short essays, you may need to read books and long articles.
  • Once you have all the necessary information, the ideas in your head will start to take shape. The next step is to develop a thesis statement out of all the ideas you have in your head. A thesis statement is a must as it informs readers what the entire music essay is about. Don't be afraid to be bold in your statement; new outlooks are always appreciated.
  • Next, you'll need a music essay introduction. Here you introduce the readers to the context and background information about the research topic. It should be clear, brief, and engaging. You should set the tone of your essay from the very beginning. Don't forget the introduction is where the thesis statement goes.
  • One of the most important parts of essay writing is crafting a central body paragraph about music. This is where you elaborate on your thesis, make main points, and support them with the evidence you gathered beforehand. A World Without the Beatles Essay

Musical change, social and cultural changes, popularity among turkish youth.

The Beatles had a strong influence on the world of music – on artists’ inspiration, the development of musical directions, and other aspects, such as conducting concerts or studio recordings. The admirers of the group, among whom was such a famous person as Sting, became a separate phenomenon of history – Beatlemania (Chilton, 2019). Due to many fans, the group needed a convenient place for concerts. In this way, stadium rock appeared in 1965, which changed the existed concepts of rock concerts (Chilton, 2019). Their success marked the beginning of the most famous music festivals in history such as Monterey and Woodstock. Moreover, rock fans can only make assumptions about how the Rolling Stones or Led Zeppelin concerts would go without The Beatles’ influence.

Their songs are simple and understandable and easily resonate among a large number of people. Many of them became classic and are the basis for creating new covers. Such esteemed artists as David Bowie, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, and many others made cover versions of The Beatles’ songs (Chilton, 2019). The list of famous bands and singers later admitting in The Beatles’ influence is enormous.

Consequently, it is not known how some compositions or even the complete style of Pink Floyd, The Smiths, and many others could sound. The Beatles were the trendsetters of new technical and experimental innovations. More than seven hundred hours spent recording Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album helped other musicians take a different look at studios’ use (Chilton, 2019). Moreover, despite the rapid development of music and the emergence of many new bright artists, this group invariably remains a key figure in rock music.

Due to the influence on many fans, the group members changed some of the people’s fashion habits, especially among teenagers. Sloppier clothing and hairstyles are simple steps that have contributed to individuality and personal freedom. The world’s enthusiasm for the group’s music began to unite peoples from various countries, even in such tense times as the Cuban crisis period (Chilton, 2019). It is significant to note that The Beatles appeared when the world needed hope (Chilton, 2019). I think such mass love makes the group a symbol of the era of hope and individuality, a unique cultural phenomenon. Thus, a world without The Beatles would be completely different not only in music and media, but also in everyday fashion, ways of manifesting individualism, and, possibly, in international relations.

Despite the group’s greatness, I am sure that it is not popular among Turkish university youth now. Perhaps, they heard about them as a well-known group of the last century but were not interested in detail. For this reason, I am glad I had the opportunity to read Chilton’s article. It struck me that the work of the group crossing the borders of states attracted different peoples’ attention. I think that one of the essential functions of musical art is the establishment of connections between people. Watching some acquaintances, I can confidently assume that musical tastes and preferences change over time.

If Turkish youth are not interested in groups such as The Beatles, there is still a chance that they will learn more about them in the future. In my view, the reason for this is that adolescents and young people follow trends more, and adults turn to classics.
