Swami Vivekananda: His Life, Legacy, & Liberative Ethics
2021, SWAMI VIVEKANANDA: HIS LIFE, LEGACY & LIBERATIVE ETHICS
This volume arises from deliberations at the first International Academic Conference in the United States to explore the life and legacy of the Hindu visionary, liberative theologian, and great modern exponent of Ādvaita Vedanta, Swami Vivekananda. The conference took place in Los Angeles on October 18th-19th, 2013, marking the 150 th centenary of the birth of Swami Vivekananda, an advocate of interreligious dialogue and foremost disciple of the modern era's most influential Hindu mystic, Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa. The conference was sponsored by the School of Religion of the University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles. Over 150 years since his birth and some 120 years after his momentous plenary address at the World Parliament of Religion in Chicago (1893), numerous aspects of Swami Vivekananda's life and work have begun to attract renewed attention. Vivekananda's philosophical, religious and social ideas, especially the manner in which they were extended, applied, or appropriated in recent times have been widely discussed, critiqued, and presented. His legacy, however, is being re-appraised within these pages in terms of its continuity as well as its discontinuity from tradition, and from postcolonial, feminist, hermeneutical, and ethical perspectives. This volume offers a multi-layered exploration of the contributions of Swami Vivekananda to a range of discursive and practical engagements that cut evenly across the Hindu traditions of philosophy, theology, ethics, and social justice. There are historical questions as well as exegetical or scholastic questions about the connection Swami Vivekananda claimed or is perceived to have had with the deeper recesses of

At the crossroads of two epoch-making centuries, when restless Europe was convulsing, on the one hand, under the far-flung tentacles of the greedy, shameless imperialists who were secretly conspiring to drag the world into a bloodbath for the sake of redevising their spheres of influence, colonies, markets, etc. and on the other hand, as a result of the nefarious designs of the imperialists, the progressive people—the thinking intelligentsia, the working class and their allies—were preparing for a showdown with the existing masters of the society, when the thinking people of India were searching for the correct path which the country should follow in social, political and other matters, Vivekananda appeared like a meteor and within a short period of less than a decade of his public life not only endeared himself to millions of his countrymen and thousands of his admirers and followers in Europe and America, not only dispelled the century-old slanderous notions about India and Indians spread carefully and constantly by the imperialists and their agents in various guises, but made major contributions in many fields of human knowledge which were of far-reaching consequences.

When Swami Vivekananda arrived in the United States he encountered what he described as “A roaring, fighting, kicking, mad whirlpool of American religion.” (1) He announced that he was determined to make a Himalayas in New York State and start a monastery there, thus throwing one more apple of discord into what he elsewhere described as “The mass of mystical thought that has burst upon the Western world of late.” (2) What was the reason for the religious ferment in the West, and how did Swami Vivekananda make his contribution? The answer to the first question seems to lie in the observation, developed at length in New Age Religion and Western Culture by Wouter J. Hanegraaff (3), that the West was moving rapidly away from its Judeo-Christian tradition of the past two millennia towards what we now call the New Age. As Dr. Hanegraaff sees it, this transition had taken a series of steps, which we shall use as a framework for our discussion. First had been the emergence of the esoteric tradition at the time of the Renaissance. Basically, esotericism developed from the non-dual, holistic counterculture that had been running alongside dominant, dualistic Judeo-Christianity, but very much in the shade; and, between the twelfth to seventeenth century, actively condemned and persecuted. At the Renaissance, it came to the fore as various gnostic movements, such as Hermeticism, the Jewish and Christian Kabbalahs, Rosicrucianism, etc. Along with these gnostic movements came the beginnings of modern natural science which shared with them the central idea that knowledge is primarily acquired through one's own direct experience. Again, such knowledge is obtained by means of consciously directed struggle and not through the dogmas and rituals of any external agency, no matter how long-established or revered.

Swami Vivekananda lives even today through his words that shake the reader to one’s very foundations. He is fulfilling his prophecy: ‘It may be that I shall find it good to get outside of my body—to cast it off like a disused garment. But I shall not cease to work! I shall inspire men everywhere, until the world shall know that it is one with God.’ His words are not mere articulations of thought, but they represent the most radical of ethos transmitted through powerful spiritual energy that transforms all who receive them and continues to grow as part of their personalities, and finally engulfs them in an ocean of holy poise, and elevates those who show endeavour, to the fulfilling knowledge of non-difference and to the realisation of Self. To Swamiji, it was Sri Ramakrishna, who staged the World’s Parliament of Religions at Chicago in 1893.
Recalling Tolerance: Vivekananda Neo Vedanta and the 1893 Parliament of World Religions

ABSTRACT Swami Vivekananda introduced Hinduism to mainstream Western culture. The comprehensive results of his influence are difficult to quantify. His story is profoundly contextualized in culture, politics, activism, academia, and the burgeoning of new thought as the East met the West. In 1893, against the weight of Western colonial prejudice, Vivekananda stood before the predominantly Christian audience at the first Parliament of World Religions. His opening address was an appeal for unification and civility. Vivekananda laid the historical context for Hinduism as a friend to Western religions; he differentiated religion from political tyranny and advocated that the Parliament could change the course of history. The rhetoric he employed was masterful, inclusive, and appealing. His famous first line was “Sisters and Brothers of America” (Matheson 3). With those five words, the congregation rose in a standing ovation. The foundation of his success was an authentic spiritual practice and profound intellectual talent combined with the 19th-century landscape of religious freedoms in American Democracy and the historical timing of emergent global culture. Vivekananda’s history, scholarship, relationship with Sri Ramakrishna, vision of inclusivism, and journey to spiritual self-actualization is a compelling story that explains his success in introducing Hinduism to the West.
International Journal for Philosophy of Religion
"In his lucid and accessible book, Swami Medhananda expounds Vivekananda’s philosophy, locating it in both the Indian and Western intellectual debates, and establishing his originality and enduring relevance....Medhananda is a meticulous scholar, engaging not merely with those in the canon, such as Kant and John Stuart Mill, but many other philosophers, such as William Hamilton and Herbert Spencer, who are not as widely read as they should be....Medhananda exhibits Vivekananda as an original epistemologist anticipating later trends....In the last section...Medhananda makes a good case that contemporary epistemologists of religion should take note of Vivekananda’s contributions....Medhananda has done an excellent job presenting the thought of Vivekananda and locating it in the debates of both his Indian and British contemporaries. Even when his philosophy is open to objection it is original and thought-provoking." -- Peter Forrest, University of New England, Australia

Description
An absorbing biography of Swami Vivekananda (1863 – 1902). With 28 photographs and Appendix containing most important teachings. Swami Vivekananda, India’s first spiritual and cultural ambassador to the West, came to represent the religions of India at the World’s Parliament of Religions, held at Chicago in connection with the World’s Fair (Columbian Exposition) of 1893. His message of the unity of humankind and harmony of religions was embraced by the public and press of the time as representing the essence of the Parliament. The Swami wished to create a bridge between the East and the West by bringing to America the gift of India’s ancient spirituality, in exchange for the scientific and industrial outlook of the West. After four years of traveling and teaching in America and Europe, the Swami returned to India, where he is revered as a “Patriot Saint.” The government of India has declared his birthday a national holiday. In 1976 on the occasion of the American Bicentennial, Swami Vivekananda was honored by the Smithsonian Institution’s National Portrait Gallery as one who came to America from abroad during the past 200 years and made a significant impact on its spiritual development. Upon his return to India, Swami Vivekananda founded The Ramakrishna Order of India in the name of his teacher, Sri Ramakrishna, who is regarded as the Prophet of Harmony of Religions. The Order is the pre-eminent religious organization of modern India. More than 1000 monks of the Order serve throughout the world. While in the West the work is mainly in the form of conducting worship, teaching, writing and lecturing, in India the Order is widely known for its vast charitable activities — running hospitals and schools, rural uplift, and extensive relief work in times of emergency. The Swamis of the Order work tirelessly in the spirit of “Service of God in Man,” regarding the service of all people as a veritable form of worship.

Swami Vivekananda once spoke of himself as a 'condensed India.' His life and teachings are of inestimable value to the West for an understanding of the mind of Asia.
