Integer Exponents

  • Represent visual models of exponential change with integer exponents.
  • Interpret exponential functions as visual growth patterns (positive integers) or shrinking patterns (negative integers).
  • Levels begin with positive exponential growth and progress to seeing negative integers as an inverse function. 

Linear Balloons Graphs  

  • Manipulate the y-intercept values that form a line going through balloons plotted on a graph.
  • Change the y-intercept and slope on a graph and see how the values change in a linear equation in slope-intercept form.
  • Levels begin with visually manipulating the y-intercept so the given line will pop balloons and progress to comparing changes in the graph to changes in the corresponding equation.

Linear Balloons Tables

  • Solve linear equations using a table in slope-intercept form.   
  • Represent linear equations using tables and graphs.
  • Levels begin by finding the y-value on a table, then progress to plotting points using linear equations and y-values.

Model Graph with Equation

  • Interpret a line's slope and y-intercept and represent them in a linear equation in slope-intercept form.
  • Use changes in x and y-values to identify the slope of a line and the y-intercept of a line as the point where x=0.
  • Levels start with slopes = 1 and y-intercepts at the origin and progress to more challenging slopes and y-intercepts.

Solve Linear Equations

  • Visual puzzles pose two-step problems that have students work backwards from a given total number of blocks needed and select the starting quantity of blocks.
  • Use the visual model to reason about linear relationships px = r where p and x are rational numbers.
  • Levels start by posing problems with whole number coefficients, then progress to using rational number coefficients.

Count Objects to 10

  • Develop counting strategies such as 1:1 correspondence and cardinality.
  • Levels begin by just clicking on given objects, then progress to selecting equivalent number of squares in the ground.
  • As the levels transition, students internalize strategies and connect numerals to the counting sequence.

Push Box Addition

  • Add blocks at the start (left side) to the blocks in the middle by selecting the total number of blocks at the end (right side).
  • Develop and apply strategies for solving visual addition problems.
  • Levels start with sums ≤ 5 by adding up to 2 more blocks and transition to sums up to 10.

According to the Common Core Standards, 8th grade math games should focus on three critical areas: (1) formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations, including modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations; (2) grasping the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships; (3) analyzing two- and three-dimensional space and figures using distance, angle, similarity, and congruence, and understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem.

If your child could use some extra math practice, you may want to look at some of the free resources online. The following sites offer math problems and lessons.

Math Lessons and Practice Problems from CoolMath.com

If your 8th grader is studying pre-algebra in school, these online math lessons and practice problems may be helpful. One of the things your child may like about the explanations of pre-algebra topics here is that they are written in a casual, kid-friendly tone, unlike many textbooks. The practice problems show up one at a time, rather than as a full page test or worksheet, which can ease a child into a math unit without much stress.

Once you click on the pre-algebra heading near the top of the homepage, you'll see a list of topics, including exponents, fractions, signed numbers and properties. The practice problems are located within these lessons; however, not every subheading has a math question generator. The website does not allow these lessons to be printed out for any reason.

Math Explanations from AAAMath.com

Here, there are dozens of additional free lessons that your child can read if he or she is struggling with a specific math topic. The website is divided by grade level, so simply open the 8th grade link to see all the math topics listed. You will likely be able to find any topic in your son or daughter's math book because the topics range from measurement and ratios to divisibility and scientific notation. Some of the lessons use numbers to show examples; otherwise, they are written explanations that vary in length.

Your child can view explanations of math problems here by selecting a specific math topic on the search bar. Because there are so many options to choose from, you may want to help your child find what he or she needs. Begin searching by choosing the tab labeled 'K-8 Math'. Let's say your child is having trouble with reducing fractions. He or she can type in a specific fraction and see it reduced by the computer along with step-by-step instructions on how it was done. This kind of practical breakdown of the steps may help when your child has to show his or her work on a test and will be especially beneficial for visual learners.

Welcome to the multiplication facts worksheets page at Math-Drills.com! On this page, you will find Multiplication worksheets for practicing multiplication facts at various levels and in a variety of formats. This is our most popular page due to the wide variety of worksheets for multiplication available. Or it could be that learning multiplication facts and multiplication strategies are essential to many topics in mathematics beyond third grade math.

Learning multiplication facts to the point of quick recall should be a goal for all students and will serve them well in their math studies. Multiplication facts are actually easier to learn than you might think. First of all, it is only essential to learn the facts from 1 to 9. Somewhere along the way students can learn that anything multiplied by zero is zero. Hopefully, that is an easy one. Students also need to learn to multiply by ten as a precursor to learning how to multiply other powers of ten. After those three skills are learned, everything else is long multiplication. Multiplying by 11 is actually two-digit multiplication. Now, learning fact tables of 11 and beyond will do no harm to those students who are keen and able to learn these things quickly, and it might help them figure out how many eggs are in a gross faster than anyone else, but keep it simple for those students who struggle a bit more.

The multiplication tables with individual questions include a separate box for each number. In each box, the single number is multiplied by every other number with each question on one line. The tables may be used for various purposes such as introducing the multiplication tables, skip counting, as a lookup table, patterning activities, and memorizing.

The compact multiplication tables are basically lookup charts. To look up a multiplication fact, find the first factor in the column header and the second factor in the row headers; then use straight edges, your fingers or your eyes to find where the column and row intersect to get the product. These tables are better than the previous tables for finding patterns, but they can be used in similar ways. Each PDF includes a filled out table page and a blank table page. The blank tables can be used for practice or assessment. You might also make a game out of it, such as "Pin the Fact on the Table" (a play on Pin the Tail on the Donkey). Students are given a product (answer) and they pin it on an enlarged version or the table (photocopier enlargement, interactive whiteboard, overhead projector, etc.). Paper-saving versions with multiple tables per page are included. The left-handed versions of the multiplication tables recognize that students who use their left hands might block the row headings on the right-handed versions.

Five Minute Multiplication Frenzies

Five minute frenzy charts are 10 by 10 grids that are used for multiplication fact practice (up to 12 x 12) and improving recall speed. They are very much like compact multiplication tables, but all the numbers are mixed up, so students are unable to use skip counting to fill them out. In each square, students write the product of the column number and the row number. They try to complete the chart in a set time with an accuracy goal (such as less than five minutes and score 98 percent or better).

It is important to note here that you should NOT have students complete five minute frenzies if they don't already know all of the multiplication facts that appear on them. If you want them to participate with the rest of the class, cross off the rows and columns that they don't know and have them complete a modified version. Remember, these charts are for practice and improving recall, not a teaching tool by itself.

Students who write with their left hands may cover the row headings on the right-handed versions, so the left-handed versions have the row headings on the other side.

When a student first learns multiplication facts, try not to overwhelm them with the entire multiplication table. The following worksheets include one row of the facts in order with the target digit on the bottom and one row with the target digit on the top. The remaining rows include each of the facts once, but the target digit is randomly placed on the top or the bottom and the facts are randomly mixed on each row.

Expand your mental math abilities by learning multiplication facts beyond the twelve times tables with these worksheets. They are horizontally arranged, so you won't be tempted to use an algorithm. Even if you can't recall all these facts yet, you can still figure them out using the distributive property. Let's say you want to multiply 19 by 19, that could be (10 × 19) + (9 × 19). Too hard? How about (10 × 10) + (10 × 9) + (9 × 10) + (9 × 9)! Or just remember that 19 × 19 = 361 :)

Education Rankings by Country 2024

There is a correlation between a country's educational system quality and its economic status, with developed nations offering higher quality education.

The U.S., despite ranking high in educational system surveys, falls behind in math and science scores compared to many other countries.

Educational system adequacy varies globally, with some countries struggling due to internal conflicts, economic challenges, or underfunded programs.

While education levels vary from country to country, there is a clear correlation between the quality of a country's educational system and its general economic status and overall well-being. In general, developing nations tend to offer their citizens a higher quality of education than the least developed nations do, and fully developed nations offer the best quality of education of all. Education is clearly a vital contributor to any country's overall health.

According to the Global Partnership for Education , education is considered to be a human right and plays a crucial role in human, social, and economic development . Education promotes gender equality, fosters peace, and increases a person's chances of having more and better life and career opportunities.

The annual Best Countries Report , conducted by US News and World Report, BAV Group, and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania , reserves an entire section for education. The report surveys thousands of people across 78 countries, then ranks those countries based upon the survey's responses. The education portion of the survey compiles scores from three equally-weighted attributes: a well-developed public education system, would consider attending university there, and provides top-quality education. As of 2023, the top ten countries based on education rankings are:

Ironically, despite the United States having the best-surveyed education system on the globe, U.S students consistently score lower in math and science than students from many other countries. According to a Business Insider report in 2018, the U.S. ranked 38th in math scores and 24th in science. Discussions about why the United States' education rankings have fallen by international standards over the past three decades frequently point out that government spending on education has failed to keep up with inflation.

It's also worthwhile to note that while the Best Countries study is certainly respectable, other studies use different methodologies or emphasize different criteria, which often leads to different results. For example, the Global Citizens for Human Rights' annual study measures ten levels of education from early childhood enrollment rates to adult literacy. Its final 2020 rankings look a bit different:

Education Rates of Children Around the World

Most findings and ranking regarding education worldwide involve adult literacy rates and levels of education completed. However, some studies look at current students and their abilities in different subjects.

One of the most-reviewed studies regarding education around the world involved 470,000 fifteen-year-old students. Each student was administered tests in math, science, and reading similar to the SAT or ACT exams (standardized tests used for college admissions in the U.S.) These exam scores were later compiled to determine each country's average score for each of the three subjects. Based on this study, China received the highest scores , followed by Korea, Finland , Hong Kong , Singapore , Canada , New Zealand , Japan , Australia and the Netherlands .

On the down side, there are many nations whose educational systems are considered inadequate. This could be due to internal conflict, economic problems, or underfunded programs. The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization's Education for All Global Monitoring Report ranks the following countries as having the world's worst educational systems:
