100 Words Essay on Advantages and Disadvantages of Mobile Phones

Every coin comes with its two sides. The same is true for cell phones; on one side, they are a fantastic innovation, but on the other, they also bring the worst aspects of society with them.

The greatest advantage of mobile phones these days is that they have become a constantly available source of entertainment which prevents people from getting bored. Access to information has become easier with mobile phones. Nowadays, sources of knowledge have become diversified, one of the best of them being the internet. Mobile phones allow consistent access to the internet, and therefore, to any information that one needs. However, the downside of mobile phones is that students often get distracted from studies because of phones. A lot of security threats have also emerged as a consequence of the constant availability of information through mobile phones.

Essay on Advantages and Disadvantages of Mobile Phones

200 Words Essay on Advantages and Disadvantages of Mobile Phones

Mobile phones are made for better and quicker human interaction but the overuse and overdo of anything can have a negative influence. The main advantage of mobile phones is that they are easy to use and facilitate easy and quick communication between people. Another advantage is how they’ve given us easy access to more or less all kinds of information via the Internet. This is helpful for students, working people, and homemakers alike. Nowadays, especially after Covid-19, many schools, colleges, and educational institutions are offering education online, and mobile phones make it easy for students to attend classes virtually with all study material in the form of text, images, and videos.

One of the pitfalls of mobile phones is that they might distract one from their work, be it students or older people. Parents and teachers often complain of students using mobiles in-between studies even when it is not for study-related purposes. Also, it often happens that while watching movies or playing games on the phone, people get so engrossed that they do not blink their eyes for long hours, which may result in dryness, redness, and itching in the eyes. Hence, it is recommended that one should take small breaks and wash their eyes frequently when using the mobile for long hours.

500 Words Essay on Advantages and Disadvantages of Mobile Phones

The cell phone has dramatically altered the common man’s lifestyle in the modern world. It is indeed a remarkable innovation that has brought in a lot of ease and comfort, but like everything else, the mobile phone comes with its own downsides.

Easy Communication

The greatest advantage of mobile phones these days is easy communication with family and friends, and people who live far away from us. Mobile phones make communication more convenient and affordable. Mobile phones have made communication simpler since we can now contact friends, family, coworkers, and other people at any time by just pushing a few buttons on our phones. There are additional features like video calls, text messaging, recorded calls, and more, which have made communication way easier than how it used to be a few years back.

Ease Of Education

During and after the Covid-19 pandemic, many educational institutions started providing classes online. Not everyone has a laptop or computer at home, and so, mobile phones have been helping a large number of students study online. There is also a variety of online courses that students who do not own a laptop or computer can access via mobiles and study subjects that interest them. In a way, it can be said that mobile phones have also taken education to the more remote corners of the world.

Mobiles May Harm Eyesight

Using the mobile for long hours can harm eyesight. Redness, itching, watery eyes, and dryness, are common eye complaints of people who use cell phones consistently. With the harmful rays emitted by mobile phones, vision may also be affected in the case of some people. To counter these effects, it is a good idea that one does basic eye muscle exercises, washes eyes regularly, and takes frequent breaks while using the phone.

Distraction From Work

Parents often complain about their children using mobile phones excessively and thereby losing out on study and playtime. Even in the case of grown-ups, mobile phones often become a distraction from work or other important tasks that a person may be engaged in. A good idea is to designate a specific time window for oneself to use the mobile phone. For instance, students may decide to study for a stretch of one hour and then spend 10 minutes on the phone, and then repeat the cycle. Another idea is to install time blocker apps that alert you when you spend more than the necessary time on any app on your phone.

Mobile phones are incredibly important in today's age of technological growth. Our lives have become simpler thanks to technology. Depending on how a person utilises a mobile phone, it might have both beneficial and bad effects. Mobile phones are made for better and quick human interaction but the overuse of anything yields negative results. Mobile devices do have their harmful effects which include those on our health as well. Students must be mindful of their cell phone usage and so should be adults. We can make the best use of mobile phones in terms of accessing information, communication, and entertainment when we use them mindfully and in a regulated way.

Effects of Mobile Phones

Mobile phones are one of the quickest communication methods worldwide, making it challenging to imagine life without them. It is among the most successful inventions in the modern world. Mobile phones have come with convenience to consumers in an unprecedented way. Older people, adults, and millennials use a phone for various purposes. Most teenagers use mobile phones for networking reasons. Besides, adults use their phones to communicate, organize itineraries, pay bills, and socialize. Older people keep their phones mainly for entertainment and communication purposes.

Furthermore, mobile phones assist them in keeping their health in check by use of various applications. Nevertheless, spending more time on mobile phones has adversely affected consumers, like physical issues and conflicts in social relationships. The adverse effects have affected individuals’ perceptions of mobile phones. Some individuals support technological advancement more so mobile users, while others oppose technological use. Those in support argue that phones are an essential communication tool and assist people in planning meetings and day’s events. For example, the various communication methods through social media make users link with others who are far and near, as pointed out by Muller (2017). Apart from verbal communication, mobile phones are used for browsing, connecting socially, playing games, and paying bills. At the same time, they can be addictive, which causes distraction in performing essential duties. Also, they cause depression due to social media influence, especially on millennials. The paper will argue the pros and cons of using mobile phones.

Overindulgence in mobile phone use can negatively impact social life and health. One of the widely researched areas on adverse effects of mobile use on health concerning technology is linked to causing cancer. Nevertheless, it raises conflicting opinions and ideas between researchers. Most researchers agree that mobile phones may be a health risk to users who use gadgets all the time. According to Liu et al. (2017), individuals who use most of their time on cell phones are highly susceptible to developing brain cancer. They suggest that the radio waves from cell phones harm individuals’ brains.

Consequently, cell phone utilization during chats harms the brain. Besides cancer risk, the nervous system is also altered by prolonged mobile phone use against the ear and head. Consumers may have recurring headache episodes, sleep disorders, short temper, and insufficient attention when the nervous system has interfered with them. Overdependence on cell phones also leads to loss of human contact because an individual has gotten used to linking with others through the phones. It thereby reduces social skills, and this affects human relations. Teenagers and young individuals are victims of the utilization of mobile phones, and they can suffer depression if denied access to phones. Addiction to cell phones makes them lose touch with the real world, leading to psychological problems and an inability to interact physically with others.

Additionally, cell phones have a negative impact as they decrease intelligence and creativity due to focusing too much on the phones rather than creative activities. Encheve et al. (2017) state that learners rarely go to libraries as they use Google. The search engine is easily accessible through cell phones, and the narrowed research through Google limits one from getting broad information on a subject. Information that is easy to access minimizes a person’s enthusiasm to get accurate information. Moreover, spending more time on cell phones limits one from interacting with the surroundings, impacting creativity. Spending much time on gadgets makes to not think soberly and times leads to suicide.

On the other hand, mobile phones also influence positively, which cannot be overlooked by the above-mentioned adverse effects. Liu et al. (2017) stipulate that most people perceive nicely about mobile phones. In most states, individuals show that cell phones are appropriate for personal use as they positively impact the economy and learning. Mobile phones assist people in maintaining contact with relatives and friends through the use of social platforms. Moreover, cell phones keep people updated on the latest information and news that concern them. Muller (2017) points out that access to social platforms and entertainment services is one of the benefits of cell phones in contemporary society. Individuals need to immediately watch their favorite programs on television as they can access them on their mobile phones.

Furthermore, cell phones have several gaming platforms that assist people in relaxing and easing the brain after a stressful day. Mobile phones are also important as they help in emergency cases in that communication is easy, making emergency response fast or instant. In education, phones can assist teachers and learners in constant engagement. Learners and teachers interact through mobile platforms like Whatsapp, where they can send learning materials and get students’ responses. Mobile phones have improved communication for special needs individuals, making things clear.

An examination of the influence of cell phones around the globe shows that phones impact a big part of human lives in society. On a positive dimension, mobile phones are the best in improving communication between people. Communication has improved where people interacting are far away from each other by mobile phones. The innovation history leading to the innovation of mobile phones shows that communication is a primary tool in the socialization of humans in society. Present mobile phones have made strides in satisfying human needs in terms of communication and updates on current affairs. Mobile phones are applied in several ways, including security surveillance, commerce, education, and relation.

On the contrary, the cell also has negative impacts considering that young people take prolonged time on their phones. Researchers have also tried to prove that a long time on cell phones affects the nervous system and the brain. Additionally, taking much time on virtual games and the internet decreases an individual’s interaction with others and the natural world, making them less creative and intelligent. The divergent internet use shows that people can access information using mobile phones, decreasing creativity as the data is always readily available. In a nutshell, mobile phones are one of the best inventions humans have ever experienced, and undoubtedly, people have become dependable on gadgets. It shows how important humans cannot live without it; therefore, the benefits outweigh the adverse effects. Those who are affected are individuals who overindulge in the use of this device.

Merits And Demerits Of Mobile Phone For Students: Sample Essay

In today's digital age, mobile phones have become ubiquitous, especially among students. This essay explores both the advantages and disadvantages of mobile phones for students, highlighting their impact on academic performance, social interaction, and overall well-being.

Mobile phones offer several benefits to students. Firstly, they provide instant access to a wealth of information through the internet. Students can quickly research academic topics, enhancing their learning beyond traditional classroom boundaries. Secondly, mobile phones facilitate communication, allowing students to stay connected with peers and family, which can be crucial for emergencies or collaborative projects. Moreover, educational apps and platforms available on smartphones enable personalised learning experiences catering to diverse learning styles and preferences.

However, mobile phones also present challenges. One significant drawback is the potential for distraction. Notifications from social media and messaging apps can divert students' attention during study sessions, impacting concentration and productivity. Furthermore, excessive mobile phone use has been linked to decreased physical activity and poor sleep patterns among students, contributing to health issues such as obesity and fatigue. Moreover, the accessibility of inappropriate content online raises concerns about cyberbullying and exposure to unsuitable material, affecting students' emotional well-being.

In conclusion, while mobile phones offer undeniable advantages in terms of information access, communication, and educational tools, their misuse can harm students' academic performance and health. Therefore, it is essential for students to use mobile phones responsibly, balancing their benefits with mindful management of usage time and content consumption. Educators and parents play a crucial role in guiding students towards responsible mobile phone use, ensuring that these devices contribute positively to their academic and personal development.

Microsoft outages caused by CrowdStrike software glitch paralyze airlines, other businesses. Here's what to know.

By Haley Ott

Updated on: July 20, 2024 / 12:06 AM EDT / CBS News

Banks, airlines, television networks and health systems around the world that rely on Microsoft 365 apps were hit by widespread outages early Friday linked to the company CrowdStrike. Thousands of flights and train services were canceled globally, including more than 1,800 in the U.S., and there were disruptions to many other public and retail services.

Here's what we know about the outages:

What caused the global Microsoft outages?

The issue was caused by a technical problem that global cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike said it had identified in its software and was working to resolve. CrowdStrike provides antivirus software to Microsoft for its Windows devices.

"Earlier today, a CrowdStrike update was responsible for bringing down a number of IT systems globally," Microsoft said in a statement to CBS News.

Later on Friday, Microsoft said on social media that it had "completed our mitigation actions and our telemetry indicates all previously impacted Microsoft 365 apps and services have recovered. We're entering a period of monitoring to ensure impact is fully resolved."

In a statement, CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz said the issue had been identified and a solution was being implemented. He added that "this is not a security incident or cyberattack. The issue has been identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed."

Long lines of passengers form at check-in counters at Ninoy Aquino International Airport amid a global IT disruption caused by a Microsoft outage and a CrowdStrike problem July 19, 2024, in Manila, Philippines.

In an update shared Friday afternoon  on social media , Kurtz again apologized to those impacted and said he was committed "to provide full transparency on how this occurred and the steps we're taking to prevent anything like this from happening again."

What has been affected by the Microsoft outages?

Over 3,000  flights had been canceled  within, into or out of the U.S. as of Friday night, and more than 11,400 others were delayed, according to the flight tracking service,  FlightAware . Globally, more than 42,000 flights were delayed Friday.

American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines resumed at least some flight departures later Friday morning after pausing operations earlier in the day due to the outages.

"We have recovered our operation today and expect to deliver a reliable operation for our customers tomorrow," American Airlines said in a statement Friday evening.

And Toby Enqvist, chief operations officer for United Airlines, said in a statement late Friday night that "while we had to cancel and delay far more flights than we ever want to, we are poised to return to a near-normal operation on Saturday."

A timelapse shared by the Federal Aviation Administration showed flights resuming Friday afternoon.

Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston canceled all previously scheduled surgeries and medical visits that were not considered urgent because many of the computer systems were down, preventing access to vital digital records.

"We do everything on our computers now," neuro ICU nurse Meghan Mahoney told CBS News. "…People's medical history, their allergies. So when that goes down, we have to revert back to paper charting."

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City postponed all procedures requiring anesthesia. Emory Healthcare system in Atlanta delayed certain types of surgeries. Seattle Children's Hospital closed its outpatient clinic.

The Department of Health and Human Services said on Friday afternoon it was "working to assess the impact of the CrowdStrike outage on patient care and HHS systems, services, and operations."

A Department of Homeland Security memo to staff obtained by CBS News said that "DHS systems are currently impacted by a global outage of the cybersecurity software CrowdStrike. This is impacting many businesses globally, as you may be seeing in the news. This was not a cyberattack."

Portland, Oregon Mayor Ted Wheeler issued an Emergency Declaration for the city on Friday. The declaration will allow for "immediate response and resources to get city systems back to fully operational levels." In New York City , Mayor Eric Adams said the outage did not have a major impact on city operations because of previous drills that had been conducted to educate officials on how to respond to an IT issue.

In Europe, Lufthansa, KLM and SAS Airlines reported disruptions. Switzerland's largest airport reported planes had not been allowed to land, according to CBS News partner network BBC News. In India, at the country's primary airport in Delhi, everything was being done manually. No electric check-in terminals were functioning and gate information was being updated by hand on a whiteboard, the BBC reported.

Hospitals in Germany said they were canceling elective surgeries Friday and doctors in the U.K. said they were having issues accessing their online booking system. Pharmacists in the U.K. said there were disruptions with medicine deliveries and accessing prescriptions.

Global IT outages at Newark International Airport

The Federal Bureau of Investigation said there were no operational problems related to the outage, though some of its systems had been affected. Those systems have workarounds that allow their use even amid the outage.

The London Stock Exchange said it had experienced disruptions to its regulatory news service, but that trading had not been impacted. A spokesperson for the New York Stock Exchange said markets were fully operational and a normal opening was expected.

Starbucks said the outage was preventing customers from using its mobile ordering features. Delivery companies like FedEx also reported that some packages could be delayed due to the outages.

"FedEx has activated contingency plans to mitigate impacts from a global IT outage experienced by a third party software vendor. However, potential delays are possible for package deliveries with a commitment of July 19, 2024," the company said in a statement.

When will the Microsoft outages be fixed?

Even with the fix being implemented by CrowdStrike, some of the problems caused will likely take time to solve, Chief Information Officer at identity security firm CyberArk, Omer Grossman, told Reuters. He said the reason is that the problem has to do with Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) products that run on individual client computers.

"It turns out that because the endpoints have crashed — the Blue Screen of Death — they cannot be updated remotely and the problem must be solved manually, endpoint by endpoint. This is expected to be a process that will take days," Grossman said.

In an interview with CNBC, CrowdStrike's Kurtz said many of the affected systems were already beginning to recover, and a fix could be as straightforward for some clients as rebooting their computers or servers.

He acknowledged, however, that "some systems may not fully recover, and we're working individually with each and every customer to make sure we can get them up and running and operational."

Kurtz did not provide a timeframe, and it appeared that many companies and organizations around the world would have to rely on their own technology departments to get systems back up and running.

The Impact of Smartphones on Young People’s Social Life Report

  • To find inspiration for your paper and overcome writer’s block
  • As a source of information (ensure proper referencing)
  • As a template for you assignment

Nowadays, phones have outgrown their status as simply technological tools as society entered a new era of electronic communication. Young people use their smartphones to socialize, which is why the majority of interactions between adolescents occur online. Washington Post reports that teenagers’ tech habits are a source of concern for parents. Since 2015, the amount of time kids spend watching videos on the Internet has doubled (Siegel). Young people manage to integrate their mobile devices into every part of their life, which explains why so many teenagers use smartphones to organize and maintain their social networks. Despite the phones’ helpfulness, they can lead various negative effects in terms of young people’s peer relationships. These often include social exclusion and cyber bullying, as well as changed family dynamics. It is crucial to acknowledge the threats of cellphone use related to socializing and maintaining relationships at a young age. Despite that, there is no denial that smartphones can be a vital instrument of easy and convenient communication with family and friends, which is why this paper aims to develop a reasonable compromise.

Firstly, phones are an excellent opportunity for adolescents to micro-coordinate their relationships and generate extensive networks with peers. By allowing kids to maintain contact with their peers without worrying about physical proximity or social immobility, smartphones have revolutionized the culture of social interaction (Campbell). Phones enable young adults to form meaningful relationships with peers, and, therefore, bring a sense of belonging into a kid’s life. However, smartphones also provide children with an opportunity to hide behind a screen, voluntarily ostracize, and become a participant in cyber bullying as a result (Rather and Ratner). Young people’s collective tendency to avoid awkward interactions by texting leads to them failing to develop a full capacity to interact with each other.

Without much experience of socializing, adolescents have trouble with not falling victim to peer exclusion. The popularization of texting transformed the nature of communication by making it brief and lacking in social niceties (Campbell). Social media networks have also contributed to the rise of cyber bullying, which implies harassment via messages, video chats, and other tools of online communication. Bullying inadvertently leads to depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts, according to recent studies (Campbell). Phones have enabled young people to message something nasty without any real-life repercussions for their words or actions.

Apart from peers, family is one of the most important social institutions that young people rely on as they are growing up. Although people’s attitudes towards phones have been reported to be largely positive, it remains apparent that children experience numerous negative effects of smartphone use in terms of their family life (Gupta and Kumar). Parents often cite safety as the reason for purchasing their kid a phone. However, the issue of security and protection is a part of the double-edged sword since phones often become a source of children’s alienation and ostracism (Silver). On the one hand, a cellphone enables young people to call their parents when they are in trouble and need help. On the other hand, excessive use of smartphones, which is common among teenagers, serves as a threat to existing family dynamics as kids become more inclined to spend their time online instead of socializing with their parents and siblings.

In conclusion, it is evident that young people can benefit greatly from using cellphones as a tool to build and maintain relationships with peers. Additionally, they can use their devices to get immediate help or urgently call their family. However, it is important for parents to monitor their children’s online activities, preferably without intruding their privacy too much. Adults have to encourage young people to socialize in real life and engage in offline communication.

A routine software update caused cascading chaos Friday that has engulfed global businesses from airports and banks to retail and law enforcement.

It wasn’t a cyberattack, but was caused by one of the world’s largest cybersecurity companies deploying a flawed update while trying to keep their customers safe from hackers.

CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity company based in Austin, Texas, that’s widely used by businesses and government agencies that run on Microsoft computers, said that a defect in one of its updates for computers running the Windows operating system had caused the issue. The result was arguably the largest global information technology outage in history.

Here’s what we know:

What has been affected?

The outage appeared to affect almost every major business sector in one way or another.

Airports and flights across the world were severely delayed or canceled altogether, as the computers on which these services rely were disrupted by the issue. Three of the largest airlines in the United States — American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines — all issued ground stops, citing communications problems.

Long lines snaked through airports from Berlin to Hong Kong, as electronic systems failed and staff members resorted to checking in passengers manually. One flier in the Indian city of Hyderabad posted a picture of a curiosity usually unseen in the modern digital age: a handwritten boarding pass.

The issue also affected banks, leaving some customers unable to access their money. People across Australia, New Zealand and elsewhere reported problems logging into their accounts at major retail banks. Meanwhile the London Stock Exchange, the largest of its kind in Europe, said some of its services had been disrupted although trading had not been impeded.

In retail, McDonald’s closed some of its stores in Japan because of what it said in an online statement was a “cash register malfunction.” And the British grocery chain Waitrose was forced to put up handwritten notes informing customers that it was only accepting cash. Some Starbucks locations temporarily closed after the company's mobile ordering system went down, while other locations stayed open and left their baristas scrambling to come up with new workflows.

Baltic Hub, a global shipping terminal in Poland, said in a statement it had been battling issues related to the outage. The Alaska State Troopers agency was among the law enforcement agencies to report issues, warning people that 911 was temporarily not working. And the British broadcaster Sky News, which is owned by NBCUniversal's parent company, Comcast, was briefly knocked off the air.

Global Microsoft Outage

Some computers that were not on during the software update appear to have avoided the issue, according to initial reports.

What caused it?

Cybersecurity programs like CrowdStrike’s frequently and automatically update themselves to account for new tactics that malicious hackers have discovered. And there’s always a slight risk that any software update will be incompatible with other programs.

CrowdStrike’s update should have been routine, but an error in its code conflicted with Windows and proved catastrophic.

The company’s CEO, George Kurtz , said Friday morning on the "TODAY" show that while some customers would see their computers fixed automatically, others would require manual work to fix.

“The system was sent an update, and that update had a software bug in it and caused an issue with the Microsoft operating system,” Kurtz said. “Our systems are always looking for the latest attacks from these adversaries that are out there.”

How long until things go back to normal?

CrowdStrike identified the problem and issued a fix early Friday after the problem began to emerge. On Friday afternoon, Kurtz released a statement apologizing for the outage, adding that CrowdStrike was “operating normally.”

The fix required affected computers to download another software update, which some have been able to do automatically.

Many companies and services affected by the chaos, such as the New Hampshire Department of Safety, which said its 911 system was briefly down, reported that they were back online by Friday morning.

Others haven’t been able to load the update, which would potentially require IT workers at some companies to reboot and tinker with every single affected computer.

“Many of the customers are rebooting the system, and it’s coming up, and it’ll be operational because we fixed it on our end,” Kurtz said. “Some of the systems that aren’t recovering, we’re working with them. So it could be some time for some systems that just automatically won’t recover.”

Mobile phones have become an integral part of our lives, offering immense benefits. However, their excessive usage has also led to numerous harmful effects, particularly on health, relationships, and academic performance.

Health Hazards

Firstly, prolonged exposure to mobile phone screens can lead to physical health issues. The blue light emitted by mobile screens can cause eye strain, blurred vision, and even long-term vision problems. Additionally, constant use of mobile phones can lead to posture-related problems, including neck and back pain.

Impact on Relationships

Secondly, excessive mobile phone usage can have a detrimental impact on interpersonal relationships. The constant urge to check one’s phone often leads to disengagement in face-to-face interactions, thus creating a barrier in personal connections. This digital distraction can cause misunderstandings and conflicts, leading to strained relationships.

Academic Performance

Thirdly, the overuse of mobile phones can negatively affect academic performance. Students often get distracted by their phones, which hampers their concentration, leading to decreased productivity and poor academic results. Physical health implications.

The excessive use of mobile phones has been linked to various health issues. One of the most common problems is Text Neck Syndrome, a condition caused by looking down at a mobile phone for prolonged periods. This can lead to neck pain, shoulder pain, and even chronic headaches.

Moreover, the blue light emitted by mobile phones can disrupt our sleep patterns. The exposure to this light suppresses the production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep-wake cycles, leading to insomnia and other sleep disorders.

Mobile phones can also have detrimental effects on mental health. The constant need to check notifications and updates can lead to anxiety and stress. This compulsive behavior is often referred to as nomophobia, or the fear of being without a mobile phone.

Furthermore, social media platforms, accessible through mobile phones, can contribute to feelings of inadequacy and depression. The constant comparison with others, cyberbullying, and the pressure to maintain a perfect online image can have severe psychological effects, especially on young adults.

Social Implications

Mobile phones can also adversely affect our social interactions. The constant engagement with the virtual world can lead to isolation and a decline in face-to-face interactions. This constant distraction can also lead to a decrease in productivity and focus, affecting academic performance and work efficiency.

Radiation and Other Risks

Moreover, the use of mobile phones while driving has been a significant cause of road accidents globally. The distraction caused by mobile phones often leads to a lack of attention on the road, making it a public safety issue.

While mobile phones have brought about significant advancements and conveniences, they come with a set of potential health and societal issues. It is crucial to use these devices judiciously and promote digital wellbeing to mitigate these adverse effects. The key lies in balanced usage, where we harness the benefits of this technology without letting it control our lives.
