PhDs in the Department of Mechanical Engineering

Application for admission & enrollment.

PhD students at TU Dortmund University must submit an application for admission to the doctoral procedure to the doctoral committee of the faculty. The requirements and documents to be submitted are documented in the respective doctoral regulations. 

After admission by the doctoral committee, doctoral candidates must enrol for the doctoral programme and prove this to the doctoral committee usually within 3 weeks.

Requirements for the doctorate

First, check the requirements for admission to the doctoral program. The following requirements must be met in principle:

• Completed university studies at a state-recognized university (decision by the doctoral committee).
• Confirmation of supervision by a doctoral supervisor/doctoral supervisor
• Possibly proof of German language skills (regulated by the respective doctoral regulations)

All further requirements and necessary documents for the application for admission to the doctoral program can be found in the corresponding doctoral regulations of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

If your application for admission to the doctoral program has been approved by the doctoral committee, you will receive a certificate that you will need for enrollment.

In the case of procedures already in progress, the chairperson of the respective examination board decides whether the oral part of the doctoral performance can be carried out in the current situation.

In the positive case, he or she is responsible for the proper conduct of the oral part and in particular for compliance with the safety conditions. A sufficient safety distance of at least 2 meters between all persons is to be ensured. The number of listeners must be limited so that this condition can be observed. The candidate is responsible for compliance with the safety conditions after the announcement of the result of the doctorate.

Doctoral programs at the department

The Department of Health Care Management can potentially award different degrees, including the PhD in economics (Dr. rer. Oec) and a Dr in Public Health (Dr. P.H.). In principle, it is also possible to obtain a Dr. med. from the Charité. Please see the following important documents on how our particular doctoral program works:

Options for pursuing PhD studies

There are two main options for pursuing a PhD at the department. On the one hand, almost all research staff will sooner or later aim to obtain a PhD on the basis of research conducted as part of the different research projects carried out by the department. On the other hand, a small number of selected external candidates who bring their own funding, e.g. who have their own scholarships, may be accepted as PhD candidates at the department. Information on different scholarship opportunities is available here .

Requirements

All PhD candidates at the department must demonstrate as part of their PhD studies their ability to carry out independent scientific work. In addition to the writing of a dissertation, the candidate must be able to do the following:

• Recognize scientifically challenging questions that are also politically relevant
• Correctly apply complex, contemporary scientific methods, including meaningful evaluations and interpretations of results
• Work in a team and in an international environment
• Present (ongoing) results to a seminar of fellow PhD candidates on a regular basis
• Publish the research results in scientific journals

Due to a high number of requests, we can accept external PhD candidates only in exceptional cases. Interested candidates should be aware that undertaking a PhD project requires a considerable amount of time (at least three years). According to our experience, candidates are unable to satisfy the requirements outlined above while working on another permanent full-time contract. External PhD candidates should plan to spend several months at our department, or possibly at another university.

Applications for admission as a PhD student should include the following:

• A letter of motivation (including a description about how you will sponsor yourself during the time of your research)
• A full CV with details of achieved academic degrees and final grades
• A brief synopsis of the planned dissertation (approx. 5 pages, outlining background, objectives, research questions, methods, expected results, and including a time frame)

Master degrees in Mechanical Engineering typically admit students who can demonstrate that they obtained knowledge in relevant subjects throughout their first academic degree. To be admitted, you may have to prove that you took courses in Math, Physics and relevant courses in Engineering. For most programs, entrance tests or interviews are not part of the admission process, students must simply submit required documents (first degree certificate and a transcript of records). These typically include your CV, a letter of motivation and sometimes letters of reference Additionally, you will have to prove your English language abilities with a language certificate.

Doctoral Convention

About the doctoral students' convention.

According to § 38 paragraph 7 Landeshochschulgesetz (LHG) Baden-Württemberg, the Doctoral Students' Convention represents the interests of the doctoral students at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), it advises on questions and can make recommendations to the organs of the university.

All doctoral students accepted for doctoral studies at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering are members of the Convention. The KIT Senate has decided to establish decentralized conventions of doctoral students at the KIT faculties. On March 30, 2015, the first meeting of the Convention took place at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering to adopt the rules of procedure and elect the board. The members of the board each hold office for two years.

Tasks and goals of the Doctoral Convention

• Contact point for all doctoral students of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering to discuss current issues, e.g. new doctoral regulations
• Contact person for doctoral students, especially in case of problems
• Representation of the opinion of the doctoral students at the organs of the university
• Informing the members about relevant events and developments

Twice a year, the board will invite to a meeting of the Doctoral Students' Convention of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. Time and place will be announced here.

The meeting is not open to the public. All members of the Doctoral Convention, i.e. all doctoral students accepted at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at KIT, are entitled to participate (§ 38 (7) Landeshochschulgesetz (LHG) Baden-Württemberg).

The last plenary meeting took place on 18.05.2023.

Please note: The grade limit of 1.5 described in the new doctoral regulations (dated 27.06.2017) in §4(1) for proof of above-average performance is not a mandatory exclusion criterion (cf. §4(7),(8)). We recommend applicants to consult with your potential supervising professor, for example during the interview.

Graduates with a degree in a Bachelor's course of at least six semesters (or equivalent degree) in Mechanical Engineering or in a course with closely related content.

The degree course in Mechanical Engineering is a joint Master's programme at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, USA, and the Universität Stuttgart. Sufficient command of English is required. In each case two semesters are spent at the home university as well as at the partner-university.
