General study tips

The website for the book Make It Stick offers a summary of the experimentally tested study strategies. The tl;dr is:

working out problems is better than reviewing notes / textbook

doing mixed reviews is better than focusing on one type of problem at a time

learning is hard work; if it seems too easy your study strategy might not be the most effective

making mistakes and learning from them is a useful strategy (don’t wait until you’ve mastered all of the examples to try a problem)

You’ve likely heard a lot of these ideas before, but it’s worth really thinking about them and putting them into practice.

As you’re reading the textbook or working on a problem set, keep a list of questions. Challenge yourself by thinking about how the problem would differ if you changed the setup.

Try creating your own questions and solving them.

Try solving problems in multiple ways.

Learn from a variety of sources: class, textbook, Cartoon Guide , etc. If you find differences, ask.

STAT 1201: Introduction to Probability and Statistics

Students are introduced to the concepts and methods of statistics, including variability, randomness, and probability. A statistical software program is used to facilitate the analysis of data sets and the understanding of statistical concepts, and to carry out simulation of experiments. Many jobs or professions require that objective decisions be made based on statistical data; students are taught how to collect, analyze, and interpret data correctly. Students are also shown how to clearly and accurately present data to others.

Online, self-paced

Although this course does not involve complex mathematics, Principles of Math 11, Pre-calculus 11, Foundations of Math 11, Math 0523 or equivalent skills as established by the math placement test.

Basic computer literacy.

Students lacking the required mathematical background are advised to take a preparatory course before attempting this course.

• Distinguish between quantitative and categorical data and know which graphical and tabular techniques to apply to each.
• Produce and interpret graphical displays for simple data sets.
• Calculate and interpret measures for the centre and spread of a data set.
• Identify how and when to use the Normal model.
• Identify when correlation and regression analyses are appropriate.
• Calculate and interpret correlation coefficient and regression line equations.
• Discuss issues associated with collecting and interpreting data from sample surveys and polls.
• Identify the role of randomization in sample surveys.
• Distinguish between an experiment and an observational study.
• Discuss the basic principles of experimental design.
• Calculate probabilities using Venn diagrams, tree diagrams, and the Addition and Multiplication rules.
• Describe the concepts of mutually exclusive events, conditional probability, dependent and independent events.
• Discuss the concept of a sampling distribution.
• Describe what is meant by the central limit theorem and understand its relevance to statistical inference.
• Calculate and interpret confidence intervals for estimating population proportions and means.
• Formulate null and alternative hypotheses.
• Conduct hypothesis tests for population proportions and means.
• Explain the meaning of P-values in hypothesis testing.
• Identify when and how to use the t-distribution.
• Determine appropriate sample sizes for estimating an unknown population proportion or mean.

Work through the virtual statistical software lab: Introduction to jamovi . This will introduce you to jamovi , which is free, easy-to-use, open source software for conducting statistical analysis. You’ll be using this software to carry out all the statistical analyses covered in the course. This lab will show you how to download and run the software and explore reading in data and basic commands for working with data in jamovi . The lab should take you no more than 45 minutes to complete.

Supplementary Notes

Introduction, what’s the most basic ingredient of any statistical study, what are data.

Information––numerical or categorical––recorded with a context to give it meaning.

How do we identify context?

Answer the “5 W’s plus H,” that is the “Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How” if possible.

In the following data table, the most important “Who” and “What” can be identified, but without more information we really can’t answer the “When,” “Where,” “Why,” and “How.”

In statistics, what is a variable?

A variable is a characteristic of a subject (or more generally, an experimental unit) whose value varies from case to case.

What are the two types of variables?

• Categorical (qualitative)—values are categories
• Numerical (quantitative)—values are numbers

For the example in the previous data table, identify the variables and their types.

What’s meant by the values of a variable?

The values of a variable are the specific categories (for categorical variables) or numbers (for numerical variables) that the variable can take on.

• Categorical variable: “eye colour of humans.” Possible values: brown, blue, green, black, …
• Numerical variable: “number of children in the family.” Possible values: 0, 1, 2, 3, … children.

Do numerical variables always have units?

Absolutely, and it’s very important that you include the units whenever you quote values of the variable.

• Numerical variable: Cost of a home in Whistler, BC
• Possible values: 545,000 dollars, $780,000, 1.2 million dollars

Example: Identifying “Five W’s plus H”

Later in the course, we’ll often look at abstracts (summaries) of studies that have been published in various health science journals. The following is an example of an abstract that was published in the Yonsei Medical Journal and is available online .

How many of the “Five W’s plus H” can we identify from the abstract?

There are six variables (the Whats) reported in the abstract.

• “Treatment received”—categorical with values “phentermine” and “placebo”
• “Decrease in body weight”—numerical—units are kg
• “Decrease in waist circumference”—numerical—units are cm
• “Difference in systolic blood pressure”—numerical—units are mmHg
