The theme for this year's observance, "Solutions to Plastic Pollution," serves as a poignant reminder of the pressing need to address the mounting plastic waste crisis that threatens the delicate balance of our ecosystems.

The Indian Context

Plastic Waste Generation:

• According to a recent study by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) , India generated around 3.5 million metric tons of plastic waste in 2019-20, with a per capita generation rate of 3.5 kg per year.
• The study also revealed that only about 60% of the plastic waste generated in India is processed or recycled, while the remaining ends up in landfills or the environment.

Plastic Waste Management Rules and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR):

• The Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules, 2022 , further strengthened the implementation of EPR for plastic packaging waste.
• Under the new rules, producers, importers, and brand owners are mandated to collect and manage a specific percentage of plastic waste generated from their products.
• The targets for EPR implementation have been set at 70% for rigid plastic packaging and 50% for flexible plastic packaging by 2024.

Initiatives by the Indian Government:

• In addition to the Plastic Waste Management Rules, the Indian government has launched the " Swachh Bharat Abhiyan" (Clean India Mission) in 2014, which aims to achieve a clean and litter-free India by promoting waste management practices and public participation.
• The government has also announced the phase-out of single-use plastics by 2022, starting with the banning of specific items like plastic straws, cutlery, and bags.
• The " Ganga Rejuvenation " program, launched in 2015, aims to restore the health of the Ganga River by addressing pollution and promoting sustainable practices along its banks.

Citizen Participation and Awareness:

• Several Non-governmental Organisations (NGOs) and citizen-led initiatives, such as the "Plastic Upvaas" campaign in Delhi and the "Shuddhi Movement" in Mumbai, have been instrumental in raising awareness about plastic pollution and promoting sustainable alternatives.
• Educational institutions and corporate organisations have also taken steps to reduce their plastic footprint by implementing waste segregation, recycling, and adopting eco-friendly alternatives.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle:

• India has implemented a nationwide ban on single-use plastics, including plastic bags, cups, plates, and straws, to reduce plastic waste.
• Initiatives like " Plastic Lao, Muft Jaao" in Delhi encourage people to exchange plastic waste for free metro rides, promoting recycling.
• Startups like Green Delight and Bamboo India are promoting the use of sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics, such as bamboo products.

Mindful Consumption:

• Indian brands like Fabindia, Anokhi, and Okhai promote sustainable fashion by using eco-friendly materials and supporting traditional artisans.
• Companies like Saaze and Bamboo India offer eco-friendly packaging solutions made from bamboo and other sustainable materials.

• Paris Agreement: The Paris Agreement, signed by 196 parties, is a legally binding international treaty on climate change. It aims to limit global warming to well below 2°C, preferably 1.5°C, compared to pre-industrial levels. Countries are required to submit Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) outlining their planned efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change. The agreement also includes provisions for financial support, technology transfer, and capacity-building to assist developing countries in their transition to a low-carbon economy.
• Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD): The CBD, ratified by 196 countries, is an international legal instrument for the conservation of biodiversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources. The convention has established targets, such as the Aichi Biodiversity Targets , which aim to address the underlying causes of biodiversity loss and promote sustainable use and conservation efforts.
• United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP): UNEP is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. What is World Environment Day?

World Environment Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 and is celebrated annually on June 5th. This is their approach for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of the environment. This year the South Asian country Pakistan will host World Environment Day 2021. The theme for this year will be ecosystem restoration, with a special focus on creating a positive relationship with nature.

What is Environmental Science?

Environmental science is an interdisciplinary academic field that integrates physical, biological and information sciences to the study of the environment, and the solution of environmental problems. Environmental science brings together the fields of ecology, biology, zoology, oceanography, atmospheric science, soil science, geology, chemistry and more in an interdisciplinary study of how natural and man-made processes interact with one another and ultimately affect the various biomes of Earth ( EnvironmentalScience.org, 2021 ).

What Does Environmental Science Teach Students?

Students acquire an appreciation and awareness about how what we do affects our environment. They also learn how to make small changes that make a large difference. They practice how to be mindful of the environment. They also learn how to influence others’ practices and increase cognizance of the factors in our environment.

Students learn about fossil fuels as the basis for understanding issues of global climate and pollution. They learn about renewable, nonrenewable, and perennial resources through case studies. They examine soil, water, timber, and mineral resource issues and conduct a field study on water resources.

When you study environmental science, you commit to learning about subjects like the understanding of earth processes, evaluating alternative energy sources, the effects of climate change, and controlling pollution.

It is vital for students to study environmental science because everyone is affected by the environment in many ways. From our food supply to weather, there are so many important reasons to study how the environment is changed by our daily living practices. More awareness will have a positive impact on our communities that in turn change our world. Our young people have power to make a difference with the many facets of preserving our environment.

Classroom Activities that Celebrate World Environment Day

• View a series of videos explaining what World Environment Day is and all it entails. The videos can be found on such sites as Discovery Education and HISTORY Education , and Newsela is a program that contains a vast array of articles on environmental topics also. Flocabulary is a fun website that contains rap songs about all of the subjects and areas such as global warming, endangered species, and recycling.
• Research endangered species that are negatively impacted by the environment and reach out to organizations on ways students can get involved in preserving the species. These activities may foster a lifelong love of the environment and endangered species.
• Conduct activities such as a community clean-up. There are so many benefits to these types of “hands-on” activities. Students’ awareness and interests increase as they are helping the environment. Classrooms that have in-person learning can set a date and have parents help with these activities. Virtual students can do something at their home or another area in the community such as a church, park, or civic area. Students remember what they “do.”
• Break down some of the larger aspects of environmentalism into categories such as global warming. Students may research the topic and present their facts in PowerPoint presentations, Google Slides, or Prezi. They will discover ways to help make a positive difference in their homes, at school, and in the communities. Teachers include virtual students in this assignment by incorporating Google Meet or Zoom times for all students to view themselves and fellow classmates.
• Students adopt a project where they decide what area they want to focus on, they have to have a checklist of ideas, timeline, and a plan of action on how they will complete the activities to help the environment.
• Participate in a recycling drive in the classroom, and virtual students may have specific drop off times. The teacher or another designee can take the recycling bins to drop off locations items.
• Make art projects from recycled items or items that can be reused. Most students enjoy art projects, and this activity can be expanded to include virtual and in-person students. The teachers can have a small classroom museum to display the art projects.

The celebration of this day provides us with an opportunity to broaden the basis for an enlightened opinion and responsible conduct by individuals, enterprises and communities in preserving and enhancing the environment. 

The theme of the 2024 World Environment Day is “ land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience .”

Designation of this Day

The year 1972 marked a turning point in the development of international environmental politics, with the first major conference on environmental issues, known as the  Conference on the Human Environment , or the Stockholm Conference. Later that year, on 15 December, the General Assembly adopted a resolution ( A/RES/2994 (XXVII) ) designating June 5 as World Environment Day and urging "Governments and the organizations in the United Nations system to undertake on that day every year world-wide activities reaffirming their concern for the preservation and enhancement of the environment, with a view to deepening environmental awareness."

On June 5, 1973, the world first celebrated World Environment Day. The date was chosen by the United Nations to honor the 1972 UN Conference on the Human Environment , a landmark summit in conservation and environmental awareness.

The UN calls World Environment Day “the biggest day for positive environmental action.” It is a day for public outreach as well as personal responsibility—an “opportunity to care for the Earth and become agents of change.”

Every year, World Environment Day is hosted by a different city or region , with a different theme. Kigali, Rwanda, hosted the 2010 World Environment Day, with the theme “Many Species. One Planet. One Future.” In 2018, India hosted World Environment Day, with the theme "Beat Plastic Pollution."

Also, there are specific slogans for the theme, so it brings success to the campaign across the globe. Various organisations all across the world come together on environment day to take small steps to improve our future. Schools and offices encourage students and workers to plant trees, clean up the local area/surrounding, etc. These small efforts have a big impact on the environment. To improve environmental conditions, government organisations and leaders come together to fight the problems, and thus help in saving our environment. Some steps taken by the government include strict laws for protecting the environment, such as the Forest Conservation Act 1980, Environment (Protection) Act 1986, etc., and reducing the use of plastics, such as Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules 2021. One should always be conscious of their activities and strive to keep surroundings clean and healthy. We should protect natural resources and use them efficiently and carefully. 2022, Sweden | Only One Earth #OnlyOneEarth

Like that gathering, it adopted the slogan “Only One Earth”, casting a spotlight on the pressing need to protect and restore humanity’s lone home.

2019, People's Republic of China | Beat Air Pollution #BeatAirPollution

The theme was air pollution, a global emergency that causes around 7 million premature deaths every year. Hosted by China, President Xi Jinping stressed his country’s willingness to share its experience combating air pollution with other nations. China also launched its Air Quality Improvement Report (2013-2018) to showcase successful policies and reflect on lessons learned.

2018, India | Beat Plastic Pollution #BeatPlasticPollution

The 45th celebration of World Environment Day was under the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution.” Over 6,000 people gathered at Versova Beach in Mumbai to join UN Environment Champion of the Earth Afroz Shah in a beach clean-up, where they collected over 90,000 kg of plastic. The Indian government made a bold commitment to ban all single-use plastics—which makes up 70 per cent of marine litter—by 2022 and European Union lawmakers agreed on a ban by 2025.

2017, Canada | Connecting People to Nature – in the city and on the land, from the poles to the equator #ImWithNature

“I’m with nature” was the theme of World Environment Day 2017, which inspired more than 1,800 events, from tree-planting in Mumbai to ivory burning in Angola to a running race through Brazil’s Iguaçu National Park. In host country Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau joined UNEP’s Erik Solheim to connect with nature by paddling kayaks along the Niagara River.

The day was a springboard for #WildforLife, at the time UNEP’s biggest-ever digital campaign and a major push to counter international wildlife crime. Twenty years after the Earth Summit, World Environment Day returned to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. 2011, India | Forests: Nature at Your Service

World Environment Day featured a friendly contest between actor Don Cheadle and entrepreneur Gisele Bündchen to see who can attract more social media followers. As part of the contest, Bündchen planted the first of 50,000 trees in Rio de Janeiro’s Grumari Municipal Park. People around the world registered more than 4,000 activities related to World Environment Day.

2010, Rwanda | Many Species. One Planet. One Future

World Environment Day’s Legacy Initiative raised more than US$85,000 for gorilla conservation and solar lighting in villages across host country, Rwanda. Voters in a global online competition chose names for several baby gorillas, spotlighting their threatened status during the International Year of Biodiversity.

UNEP marked the day at its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, by presenting the first of its Global 500 awards to environmental champions including Wangari Maathai. The awards became a mainstay of World Environment Day celebrations through 2003.

1986, Canada | A Tree for Peace

The theme “A Tree for Peace” coincided with the International Year of Peace. Reflecting World Environment Day’s growing profile, political and religious leaders, including French President François Mitterrand, Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, took part in a global ceremony by planting a tree and stressing the links between conflict and environmental destruction.

World Environment Day is the biggest international day for the environment. Led by the United Nations Environment Programme ( UNEP ), and held annually since 1973, it has grown to be the largest global platform for environmental outreach. It is celebrated by millions of people across the world.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will host  World Environment Day  2024 with a focus on land restoration, desertification and drought resilience. Land restoration is a key pillar of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), a rallying call for the protection and revival of ecosystems all around the world, which is critical to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals .
