Modern Family

The Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker clan is a wonderfully large and blended family with Jay Pritchett (Ed O'Neil) sitting at the head. By his side is his vivacious, younger second wife, Gloria (Sofia Vergara), and together they are navigating life with their youngest son, Joe, and Gloria's son, Manny (Rico Rodriguez), who is heading off to college to explore the world on his own terms. Meanwhile, Jay's grown daughter, Claire (Julie Bowen), and her husband, Phil (Ty Burrell), are learning to navigate life as empty-nesters with the youngest, Luke (Nolan Gould), now out of high school and looking to his next move; middle daughter Alex (Ariel Winter) is learning how to balance academia and a social life, and eldest Haley (Sarah Hyland) is still living at home as she pursues a career and love. Then there's Claire's brother and Jay's grown son, Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), and his husband, Cameron (Eric Stonestreet), who are about to enter the dreaded middle-school years with their newly discovered, gifted daughter, Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons). These three families are unique unto themselves, and together they give us an honest and often hilarious look into the sometimes warm, sometimes twisted, embrace of the modern family.

5 Ways ‘Modern Family’ Has Changed How We Look at Families

presentation about modern family

Over the years, the ideals and expectations of families have changed drastically. Fifty years ago, the ideal family dynamic was that of a man, a woman and at least two children. Men and women were expected to settle down, have children and remain together for the rest of their lives. However, as times, gender roles and acceptance of different sexualities have changed, so too have typical family dynamics.

The hit show “Modern Family” demonstrates in several ways how what constitutes a “stereotypical family” has changed over the years. Several episodes of the show emphasize the ways in which many people view homosexual relationships, diversity between families and unconventional relationships.

These are the top five ways that “Modern Family” has portrayed the shift in family ideals over the years and encouraged society to be more accepting of familial differences.

1. Homosexuality

Two of the main characters on the show, Mitchell Pritchett and Cameron Tucker, are a gay couple who are working toward getting married. Mitchell’s father, Jay Pritchett, who could be defined as a standoffish, conservative patriarch, was initially against their relationship and refused to give any type of support to the couple.

However, the show demonstrates how, eventually, Jay was able to open his mind to the idea of two men being together because of his deep love for his son and his ultimate desire to see him happy and fulfilled.

As times have changed in the United States, older-generation folk like Jay have had to become more accepting of homosexuality as they began to experience it in their own homes and families. The undying love a father holds for his son is what makes Jay realize that his own views are irrelevant when it comes to the happiness of Mitchell.

2. Unconventional Relationships

In addition to being somewhat crotchety, Jay Pritchett has also divorced and remarried. Years ago, society stigmatized divorce as something akin to a character flaw; however, as the importance of social decorum has loosened, divorce has becoming increasingly accepted. Jay, who is in his 60s and extremely wealthy, remarries a woman named Gloria Delgado, a Colombian woman in her late 30s.

gloria and jay

Conversely, while Jay destigmatizes divorce with his marriage to Gloria, her character helps dismantle the trophy wife taboo that surrounds women marrying older men. By showing the two characters genuinely happy with each other, the show demonstrates that love comes in many forms and that age is merely a number.

3. Underwhelming Children

Jay’s daughter, Claire Dunphy, and her husband Phil Dunphy are the parents to Haley, Alex and Luke. Haley is known as the less-than-smart, fashion-forward and popular child. She cares more about her appearance and popularity than she does about high school, which, let’s be honest, is a characteristic of a lot of teen girls. However, her lack of motivation toward academics results in her getting ousted from college after her first semester.

Alex is the brainy, sarcastic and socially awkward child of the three. While she excels in academia, she is underwhelming in the area of human interaction and relationships. Luke is the youngest of the three and takes on his father’s dopey and accident-prone attitude. Manny Delgado-Pritchett, son of Gloria and stepson of Jay, is a dandyish boy who is more worried about romance and fashion than he is about sports, destroying things or other boy-like qualities.

Through the character development of these four children, “Modern Family” shows that many children do not fit into the cookie-cutter mold of ideal offspring; every child is unique and has their own ways of contributing to society.

4. Women Who Take on Husband-Like Characteristics

The relationship between Claire and Phil Dunphy is unconventional in several ways. Claire is the CEO of her father’s company, and Phil is a realtor. Claire is high-strung and a control-freak, while Phil is a soft-hearted goofball. In many traditional marriages, the man is typically the one who enforces the rules, calls all the shots and is stern and unforgiving, while the woman is typically the forgiving, empathetic and doting parent.

However, the relationship between Claire and Phil is reversed. While Phil can almost be considered one of the children, Claire is the parent who is constantly enforcing rules, controlling every detail in her children’s lives and being the breadwinner. “Modern Family” uses the dynamic of this relationship to show that not every husband/wife relationship fits the traditional mold of older generations.

5. Adoption

Mitchell and Cameron eventually adopt a baby girl from Vietnam due to their inability to procreate. Older generations tend to look down on people adopting a child that does not have the same genetic makeup of the parents, let alone a baby of a different race.

The show emphasizes the importance of unconditionally loving a child no matter where he or she may have come from. When they first announce that they are traveling to Vietnam to adopt their child Lily, Jay’s initial response is one of apprehension. However, as soon as Jay lays eyes Lily, he falls in love with his new granddaughter.

Ultimately, “Modern Family” has shown millions of viewers that families are different, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. They are diverse and ever-changing, but that’s what makes them families. The show has been on for 10 years now, constantly challenging the way people think of families and challenging stereotypes with every new episode.

The Modern American Family

key trends in marriage and family life.

The American family has undergone significant change in recent decades. There is no longer one predominant family form, and Americans are experiencing family life in increasingly diverse ways.

In 1970, 67% of Americans ages 25 to 49 were living with their spouse and one or more children younger than 18.

Over the past five decades, that share has dropped to 37%.

With the drop in the share of adults living with a spouse and children, there has been an increase in other types of family living arrangements, like unmarried adults raising children.

A recent survey finds that the U.S. public is more accepting of some family types than others . And, broadly speaking, Americans are more pessimistic than optimistic about the future of the institution of marriage and the family.

What’s behind the change in family structure?

There are several factors that have contributed to these changes. Americans are marrying later in life, and a rising share have never been married.

While the overall share of married adults has declined, certain types of marriages have become more common over time. Since the 1970s, a growing share of Americans are in interracial or interethnic marriages.

Note: Intermarried refers to marriages between a Hispanic and a non-Hispanic spouse, or marriages between non-Hispanic spouses who come from different racial groups. Source: Pew Research Center analysis of 1970-2000 decennial census and 2010-2021 American Community Survey (IPUMS).

In 2015, same-sex marriages became legal nationally, and since then there has also been an increase in the proportion of Americans in same-sex marriages. In 2021, there were over 700,000 same-sex married couples in the United States , accounting for approximately 1% of all married couples.

Changes in fertility patterns have also had a significant impact on family dynamics. Compared with their counterparts in the 1970s, women today have fewer children.

The relationship between marriage and parenthood has also shifted, as more women are having children without being married .

Taken together, these changes help explain why married couples raising children together is no longer the norm.

Let’s take a closer look at the changes in family life over the past decades to understand how the American family has evolved and what it looks like today:

Differences by education, race and ethnicity

What form a family takes is increasingly shaped by educational attainment and varies significantly across racial and ethnic groups.

Today, individuals with a bachelor’s degree are much more likely to be married than those with less education – a change from the 1970s, when adults with a high school diploma were as likely as college graduates to be married. There are also growing racial and ethnic disparities since that time, with Asian and White adults increasingly more likely to be married than those who are Black or Hispanic.

Explore the data to see how these differences play out in American families. To start, click on a tab to display   data on the share of Americans who are married; the number of children women have, on average; or   the share of children living with two married parents. Then, choose a filter to show differences by education or by race and ethnicity.

25 "White Christmas" (Season 7, Episode 9)

Imdb rating: 8.3/10.

Modern Family features several Christmas episodes throughout its run, with one of the highest rated being season seven’s "White Christmas." In the episode, Gloria ( Sofia Vergara ) dreams of having a perfect 'White Christmas' that she could never have back in Colombia, so she rents a cabin in the mountains for the entire family. However, the weather does not cooperate, and there is already a strange guest staying in the cabin.

Mitchell ( Jesse Tyler Ferguson ) and Cameron ( Eric Stonestreet ) are determined to redeem themselves from their bad caroling performance the previous years, while Haley ( Sarah Hyland ) and Andy ( Adam Devine ) continue their romance in secret. Jay ( Ed O’Neil ) also makes a surprising announcement about the family business that catches Claire ( Julie Bowen ) off guard. "White Christmas" is full of revelations like Jay’s retirement and Haley and Andy’s relationship, and is elevated by fun character dynamics , all with a festive and warm feel.

24 "Three Turkeys" (Season 6, Episode 8)

As well as Christmas episodes, Modern Family also has a number of Thanksgiving-themed episodes that are perfect viewing to celebrate the holiday. One of the best is season six’s "Three Turkeys." With Phil ( Ty Burrell ) and Luke ( Nolan Gould ) preparing this year’s Thanksgiving dinner, Claire decides to cook a secret back-up turkey in case they mess up. Jay and Gloria planned to spend the holiday away from the family, so when their trip is canceled, they must cover up their tracks.

Cameron also tries to get Lily ( Aubrey Anderson-Emmons ) to wear a nice dress for dinner, while Haley begins to think that Manny ( Rico Rodgriguez ) might like her, despite her technically being his step-niece. This episode celebrates all the chaos and hilarity that comes with Thanksgiving dinners, and typical family situations where people don’t want to hurt their loved ones' feelings.

23 "Manny Get Your Gun" (Season 2, Episode 8)

It is clear from very early on that Manny is an old soul, being a pre-teen who is a hopeless romantic and has an affinity for drinking espressos. In season two’s "Manny Get Your Gun," he experiences a life crisis about getting older, with the entire family gathered at a restaurant to celebrate his birthday. Phil and Claire decide to engage in a heated car race on the way to the restaurant, while Mitchell and Cameron get sidetracked socializing at the mall while shopping for a gift.

The episode is utterly entertaining thanks to Manny’s dramatic situation and the rivalry between Phil and Claire . One of the episode’s highlights is when Mitchell organizes a flash mob at the mall to "Free Your Mind" by En Vogue to surprise Cameron. However, Cameron doesn’t like that Mitchell kept it a secret and didn’t allow him to participate, claiming that Mitchell cheated on him with choreography.

22 "The Alliance" (Season 8, Episode 8)

Imdb rating: 8.4/10.

In Season 8’s "The Alliance," Haley spends the day with boyfriend Rainer Shine’s ( played by Nathan Fillion ) daughter ( Brianna Askins ), and learns some lessons about parenting and dealing with teen angst. Luke unintentionally helps Jay with his petition to re-allow smoking cigars in the country club, assisting him with getting a signature from a widow who tried to seduce him. Meanwhile, Phil, Gloria, and Cameron form an alliance to help each other resolve each other’s mistakes before their spouses find out, and Mitchell senses that something isn’t right.

The episode is a reminder that while Phil, Gloria, and Cameron are part of the family, they are not Pritchetts and will always be the ‘outlaws,’ which is something they have in common and bond over. Haley also gets a dose of her own medicine while dealing with Rainer’s rebellious daughter, very much mirroring her own teen behavior and what Phil and Clare had to deal with.

21 "Under Pressure" (Season 5, Episode 12)

In Season 5’s "Under Pressure," the parents go to an open house at school which sees Claire stressed out by pressure, Gloria going head-to-head with a mean mother, and Jay teaching Phil how to play hookie. Meanwhile, Mitchell feels like he’s not doing enough for the planet and gets defensive after encountering his judgmental and environmentalist neighbor Asher (Jesse Eisenberg).

The episode also features a significant turning point and significant character development for Alex (Ariel Winter) , who goes to see a therapist after having a meltdown. Alex has always been an overachiever and someone who puts pressure on herself, so it is important to see her seeking help and being kinder to herself. Luke and Manny also go on a double date with twins, which sees them swapping around with hilarious results.

20 "Party Crasher" (Season 4, Episode 12)

Jay and Gloria believe that due to the impending arrival of their new baby, they haven't been able to give Manny ( Rico Rodriguez ) the attention he deserves. To make it up to him, they devise a clever ruse, pretending to take him shopping for baby items when, in reality, they are secretly planning his birthday celebration. Upon Manny's return home, he's flustered when he's caught kissing a girl by everyone.

Unfortunately, Gloria goes into labor and requires a hospital visit. Following the birth of baby Joe, they unite to celebrate together. This episode overflows with genuine sentiment, perfectly timed slapstick comedy – mostly at Lily's ( Aubrey Anderson-Emmons ) expense – and writing that gleams as brightly as polished chrome. It certainly highlights why Modern Family is one of the best comedy shows of the 21st century .

19 "Arrested" (Season 4, Episode 7)

In this episode, Phil ( Ty Burrell ) and Claire receive the dreaded late-night call informing them that Haley has been arrested for underage drinking. They rush to the police station, accompanied by Mitchell, the family lawyer, seeking a resolution. Cameron remains behind to supervise Alex and Luke, but they find themselves in a series of wild misadventures while under his watchful eye. At the same time, Jay manages to dodge baby shopping with Gloria, only to face an unexpected visit from Dede ( Shelley Long ).

The episode offers viewers a focus on Haley's character, with the show delivering an unexpected twist in reverse. Additionally, Dede's visit is marked by memorable speeches about her telescoping uterus, making her appearance memorable. The episode orchestrating this reunion may seem relatively ordinary, but with Haley's return serving as a counterpoint for Alex and a challenge for her parents, positive outcomes may be on the horizon.

18 "Little Bo Bleep" (Season 3, Episode 13)

The family assists Claire in getting ready for her upcoming televised debate against Duane Bailey ( David Cross ) for the town council seat. However, true to form, their efforts do more harm than good. Meanwhile, Lily is set to take on the adorable role of a flower girl for the first time. However, a new challenge arises as she's just learned her first expletive, leaving Mitchell and Cameron uncertain about how to navigate this unexpected parenting hurdle.

Jay also becomes increasingly worried about Stella's recent unusual behavior and directs his suspicions toward Gloria. The episode might evoke memories for parents of their children's swearing phase , particularly when they witness the parents' reactions and see it escalate further. It's also another heartwarming moment for fans to witness the entire family coming together once more.

17 "Halloween" (Season 2, Episode 6)

Claire's enthusiasm for Halloween is infectious, as she prepares to transform the Dunphy house into a spooky spectacle for trick-or-treaters. She assigns each family member a specific role to play, but things take an unexpected and comically chaotic turn. Cameron is haunted by a traumatic childhood experience that makes him despise the holiday, while Mitchell grapples with the aftermath of a terrible day at work. Additionally, Gloria's behavior takes an unusual turn following some teasing from Jay and Manny about her accent.

Holiday episodes often showcase the brilliance of sitcoms precisely because it's a challenge to find fresh approaches, yet Modern Family consistently excels in delivering the best, breathing new life into familiar themes . It's yet another episode where Claire's boundless love for Halloween shines through, and every time we catch her on this day, her enthusiasm is off the charts.

16 "Baby on Board" (Season 3, Episode 24)

Imdb rating: 8.5.10.

In this episode, Jay and Manny are tasked with accompanying Lily to her recital, while Mitchell and Cameron are joined by Gloria, serving as a translator, as they embark on the journey of adopting a Mexican child. Meanwhile, Haley springs a surprise announcement about her post-high school plans that appears to displease her parents.

"Baby on Board" deliberately embraces a soap opera style for the season finale , as Mitchell and Cameron's adoption process unravels due to the small-town secrets, scandals, and revelations within the Latino family they were in the process of adopting a baby from. Moreover, it's also one of the show's poignant moments when the two are unable to secure their son, and fans can deeply empathize with their heartache.

15 "Hawaii" (Season 1, Episode 23)

Imdb rating: 8.5/10.

In the previous episode, Gloria gives Jay a birthday present for a trip to Hawaii, and the story continues with the family there in this episode. But Jay's holiday intentions to do nothing but unwind are derailed by an unwanted reality check. Meanwhile, Mitchell and Cameron dispute over whether they should go sightseeing, Phil tries to make the trip romantic for Claire, and the kids get into mischief.

The episode continues to demonstrate how messy family vacations can be , because everyone has their own ideas of what it means to relax and have fun. Together, they all create an amusing mess. Additionally, much like every other funny episode of Modern Family , this one is no different because it demonstrates how much the family members have grown closer to one another. Viewers can see how their bond becomes stronger with each mishap and every vacation.

14 "Family Portrait" (Season 1, Episode 24)

Highlighting the show's dysfunctional family, the episode sees Claire trying to snap a fresh family photo, but nobody is willing to cooperate because they are all too busy. Gloria and Manny accompany Phil and Alex to a Lakers game, where they have an unpleasant incident on the jumbotron. Meanwhile, Cameron finds work as a wedding singer, Mitchell looks after Lily and a wandering pigeon, and Luke interviews Jay for a school project.

The episode is fantastic since it accurately depicts what occurs in families – basically, any family – when one individual plans something for the whole family, but everyone fails to appreciate the efforts because they are preoccupied with their own lives. The fact that the family collectively gathers for the last picture, rather than making it flawless, adds sweetness and serves as the appropriate cap to the first season of the show.

13 "A Year of Birthdays" (Season 10, Episode 22)

Imdb rating: 8.6/10.

As the due date for Haley and Dylan's ( Reid Ewing ) twins approaches, the episode sees the family relive its birthdays from the previous year. Phil decides to take piano lessons, and Claire learns that everyone perceives her as being tightly strung. A sad Manny, who proposes to Sherry ( Hillary Anne Matthews ) on his birthday and is rebuffed, ruins Cameron and Lily's birthdays. The family comes together in the present time after Haley gives birth to a boy and a girl.

In addition to being an emotional one because of Haley's birth and the family reunion, the episode is also quite amusing, since it shows how much each character has changed over the course of a year in a very engaging and realistic manner. For example, Phil learns to play piano among children and Manny, again, letting his sadness overshadow others' happiness.

12 "The Party" (Season 7, Episode 18)

This episode sees Manny and Luke being tasked with babysitting Lily, so the adults can enjoy a day for themselves. Jay and Cameron head to a sports bar to watch a big fight, Phil and Mitchell geek out at the movies, and Claire and Gloria plan a beautiful day at the spa. Things begin to go wrong when Claire believes the boys are hosting a party in secret when the fire alarm goes off at the house.

The episode, like earlier episodes on the show, clearly depicts each character's personality through their way of life and routine. Additionally, instead of the usual friendships fans are used to from the show , it pairs uncommon or infrequently encountered individuals to observe their compatibility and how they would interact with one another outside of a familial setting. It helps strengthen the bond and gives the audience a sense of adventure and the unexpected.

11 "Phil's Sexy, Sexy House" (Season 7, Episode 7)

In a unique Thanksgiving episode, Phil assists Mitchell and Cameron's friend with selling his stylish and modern home. Everyone has the brilliant idea of sneaking into the new house and having some "fun" time. They all select the same day and hour without knowing it, which causes some humorous confusion.

The writers clearly put a lot of effort into writing this episode because every plot component is presented at precisely the right time without interfering with one another during the runtime. Also, the episode brings Haley and Andy's love story to a new level , enthusing many fans about the pair. The episode is also acclaimed for Hyland and Devine's sublime chemistry, which makes it more rewarding to support their cinematic love tale.

10 "The Wedding, Part 2" (Season 5, Episode 24)

The episode focuses on Mitchell and Cameron's wedding , as they deal with a number of unanticipated occurrences in Part 1 that prevent them from having the wedding of their dreams. Even though the wedding does not go exactly as planned by either of them, it is nonetheless perfect.

The wedding of Mitchell and Cameron's emotional high points are handled well in the episode, which also gives Jay a chance to mend fences with Mitchell by finally dealing with their falling out in a meaningful way. Also, Jay and Gloria walk Mitchell down the aisle while Cameron's parents accompany him, which some viewers consider to be the most moving scene of the entire show .

9 "Schooled" (Season 4, Episode 2)

Any parent would find it tough to see their child off to college, but for Phil and Claire, it's harder when they manage to make Haley feel extremely embarrassed. Manny makes Jay and Gloria attend a baby class in the meantime. Lily is dropped off by Mitchell and Cameron for her first day of kindergarten, but when she gets into a fight with another young boy, they wind up meeting the child's combative parents.

When the entire family is together, the show is at its best, but it's equally fantastic when each individual deals with their own problems. Since viewers can relate to struggles like their child leaving the nest, being summoned to the principal's office for something their child did, or attending infant courses, this episode hits many audiences with authenticity and, of course, humor .

8 "My Funky Valentine" (Season 1, Episode 15)

A Valentine’s Day-centered episode of the sitcom sees Claire and Phil get together in a bar where they engage in their usual role-playing. To woo Phil, Claire decides to strip off her clothes and simply wear her coat. But, things go awry when the two of them become stuck on an escalator. Fortunately, Jay and Gloria, who were at the comedy club watching David Brenner perform, come to the rescue as they come across the distressed Claire. Meanwhile, Mitchell and Cameron help out Manny with a girl he likes.

The episode is so fantastic because it incorporates several Valentine's Day celebrations where viewers may recognize themselves in the characters, particularly Claire and Phil with their role-playing and an escalator subplot to liven things up.

7 "Fizbo" (Season 1, Episode 9)

Imdb score: 8.6/10.

Luke's birthday party is being planned by Phil and Claire, and Cameron decides to dress as his clown alter ego Fizbo. Following Jay's suggestion, Manny finds it difficult to impress a woman, while Haley and Dylan are having some relationship problems. After Haley releases a scorpion from its cage, however, things go wrong, and the family is forced to visit the emergency room.

The best part about this episode is that it establishes that someone in the family is hospitalized and the family visits to check on him. The remainder of the show is narrated through flashbacks, leaving viewers to constantly speculate as to who may be injured . Also, the episode includes a heroic act from Fizbo in which he defends Mitchell from bullies.

6 "Finale: Part 2" (Season 11, Episode 18)

In the final episode of Modern Family , the three beloved families come together for one last time to say goodbye to not only each other, but also to the fans, as they prepare to move on to the next chapter of their lives. The episode features Phil and Claire telling the children that one of them must move out since there is no longer enough room for everyone, including the babies. Meanwhile, Cameron receives the job of his dreams, and Jay attempts to learn how to speak Colombian.

The episode is a beautiful conclusion because it brings the show's storylines to a satisfying end while also paying tribute to its legacy. It also emphasizes family and unity themes, despite physical separation and changes that no one wants to experience but nonetheless welcome wholeheartedly. It subtly informs devoted viewers that even when the show ends, they will always be a part of its legacy, and always part of this modern family.

Modern Family today

The family in the United States is a nuclear-type: parents with one or two children. Families with separated or divorced parents are increasing. In the USA both of parents work in various sectors. American families are used to eat out; often they go to fast food. In theirfree time, they love playing American football and basketball.

Modernfamily Today

In the last 50 years, the American population had started to move to suburban places instead of living in cities: you could have larger houses, greener, less traffic,... And that has changed the appearance of cities a lot. By 2010 a movement had begun to return to the cities, especially by young people. Women in the past worked mostly at home as housewives, now most ofthem could have a job.

35 Funniest Modern Family Episodes To Watch Over And Over

  • Some of the funniest Modern Family episodes feature interconnecting storylines and family support through relatable struggles, making them rewatchable.
  • Episodes like "Up All Night" and "The Bicycle Thief" showcase Phil's hilarious reactions and bold parenting tactics that often lead to comedic chaos.
  • Cam's rivalries and feuds, such as in "Spring-A-Ding-Fling," provide plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, while the show also excels in mixing humor with relatable domestic mishaps, as seen in "Great Expectations."

It's no easy task picking the funniest Modern Family episodes out of all 250 in existence. Throughout the show's entire run from 2009 to 2020, Modern Family was the definitive American sitcom. With 85 Emmy nominations and 22 wins under its belt as well as strong ratings for ABC, it still remains a popular streaming option for people looking to laugh out loud. The lovable cast of characters and clever situations brought those big laughs to the tale of this extended family, with a few standout episodes really highlighting the show's humor.

Up until the end of Modern Family in 2020, the best episodes made great use of the ensemble and their funny, relatable struggles with one another. But no matter how hard some conversations or situations were, the three families supported each other and talked through their misgivings and secrets. From the episodes that wonderfully interconnect three different stories to the big ensemble episodes with the whole family on vacation to the memorable holiday celebrations, the funniest Modern Family episodes are among the most rewatchable of any sitcom.

Modern Family: 10 Funniest Phil'sosophies

When Haley goes to college in Modern Family, Phil gives her a book of life mottos called Phil'sosophies. The advice is hilarious but also profound.

Up All Night

Season 1, episode 11.

One of the earliest and best examples of the show's ability to weave storylines together, "Up All Night" follows the three separate families as they deal with late-night mishaps . This includes the first appearance by Manny's often-absent father, Javier, as well as Cam and Mitch dealing with sleep training Lily. However, the funniest storyline is dedicated to the Dunphys as Phil experiences severe stomach pain and has to go to the hospital.

There is also a fun set-up at the beginning of the episode with all of the kids talking about the most confusing parental advice they have gotten.

Phil's pained and dramatic reactions are mixed with the subplot of his feeling jealous over Claire's reaction to the local firefighters is paid off in a hilarious reveal that makes for a classic Phil moment . There is also a fun set-up at the beginning of the episode with all of the kids talking about the most confusing parental advice they have gotten only for all that advice to be heard throughout the episode.

Express Christmas

Season 3, episode 10.

Modern Family 's Christmas episodes are always a highlight, rewatching them makes for great holiday season viewing. This includes one of the best Christmas episodes, season 3's fast-paced and exciting "Express Christmas."

Realizing that none of them are going to be together over the actual holidays, the three families decide to stage an impromptu celebration as they all rush to make it happen . What makes it the most fun is that the ensemble splits into teams to get the job done.

There are some great pairings in the episode as the family splits up, with the highlight being Cam's attempts to give a special Christmas gift to Jay only to become self-conscious about their relationship. It is a lot of fun seeing the chaos of the holiday season intensified with this mad rush of the family trying to get it all done in hours, hitting one roadblock after another.

Coal Digger

Season 1, episode 5.

The relationship between Jay and Gloria has been the subject of some hilarious moments on the show as well as some controversy among the characters. This is revealed most directly in the season 1 episode "Coal Digger," in which the family is forced to deal with some of their tension when Manny and Luke fight at school .

The sometimes combative relationships within the family make for the most compelling episodes, and the truth behind the boys' fight is a hilarious reveal. It sets the stage for a charged family gathering that builds to a sweet family moment in the end.

This is another reminder of how excellent the early episodes of Modern Family were with the show finding its footing very quickly. It also is a good one to look back on with the tension between Claire and Gloria feeling a lot more intense only to come to a resolution by the end which changes their relationship for the better.

Season 4, Episode 7

While Haley Dunphy goes through a lot of growth over the course of the series, she was still a little immature by the time she got to college. This resulted in Haley finding herself in more trouble than ever in the episode "Arrested" as she faces getting kicked out of school for a night of wild partying. This leads to Phil and Claire bringing the only lawyer they know to defend her, and Mitch is not exactly up to the task.

The episode sees a rare instance of Phil being the tough parent, showing his disappointment in his daughter and inspiring her to take responsibility for her actions. However, this leads to a hilarious unexpected conclusion. The side storyline involving Cam babysitting Luke and Alex also goes horribly wrong with some classic scenes of Cam panicking, which always makes for big laughs.

Moon Landing

Season 1, episode 14.

Jay is not great at getting along with people and that includes those in his family. While he and Cam find some common ground when they begin going to the gym together, an awkward encounter hilariously shakes Jay, showing how immature the patriarch of the family can be .

The title of the episode is given hilarious context with Jay and Cam's run-in which makes for a great joke to end the episode. Jay is not always the most likable character on the show, but it is episodes like this in which his childishness is laughed at.

There is also a great B-plot with Claire meeting up with an old friend and becoming insecure about her mundane life. Her attempt to show off her happy family in the end makes for a brilliant reveal that highlights the Dunphys' chaotic household.

Undeck The Halls

Season 1, episode 10.

The very first Christmas episode of the series remains the best of them all, while highlighting Phil as one of the funniest and most relatable television dads. After finding a cigarette burn on the couch that none of the kids confess to, Phil puts his foot down by canceling Christmas . The wonderful way Phil and Claire struggle with not caving into their over-the-top punishment will ring true for most parents.

That storyline is filled with so many great reveals, showcasing the series' excellent writing.

There is also a great storyline of Cam and Mitch accidentally getting a mall Santa fired and attempting to make up for it, capped off with Cam's entertaining feud with a group of local carolers. That storyline is filled with so many great reveals, showcasing the series' excellent writing. There is also a sweet storyline involving Jay trying to balance his own Christmas traditions with the ones Gloria and Manny love.

Season 5, episode 16.

Cam and his many rivalries and feuds make for some of the funniest Modern Family episodes, including this one in which he finds someone who is perhaps more theatrical and charming than him. Cam finds himself jealous when a returning teacher at his school steals his thunder as he organizes the Spring Fling . Will Sasso makes for a great foil for Cam while giving Eric Stonestreet a huge platform to show Cam at his most dramatic.

However, Mitch also gets plenty of opportunities for hilarious overreactions as he starts a new job only to suspect that his new boss might be an abusive tyrant. The end reveal is a clever bit of writing that proves, despite Mitch often thinking he is one of the more rational people in the family, he can often be far from it.

Great Expectations

Season 1, episode 8.

Though still in its first season, "Great Expectations" pulled off some of the best Modern Family guest stars in the show's run. In fact, this very early episode includes some of the most memorable guest appearances . The main story revolves around Mitch and Cam reconnecting with their wild friend Sal (Elizabeth Banks) only to realize that she has a dark jealousy of Lily.

Also, when Claire attempts to outdo Phil with an anniversary gift, Edward Norton appears as the signer from Phil's favorite band only for Phil to admit he has no idea who the man is. Both guest stars make great additions to the show as it mixes those elements of madcap humor and relatable domestic mishaps.

Norton hams it up in a rare comedic role, seemingly having a lot of fun playing with the awkwardness of the situation. Banks steals the show, however, with the wild girl who is like Cam and Mitch's firstborn child. Not surprisingly, Banks became a recurring guest star.

Season 3, Episode 1

The Modern Family season finales often took the ensemble to a new location for a bigger story, but one of the best vacation episodes was the season 3 premiere. This getaway has the family visiting a dude ranch and getting in touch with the great outdoors . There is a lot of young romance with Alex sharing her first kiss and Hayley getting an unexpected proposal.

However, the adults' antics steal the show, with Phil actually proving himself to be a great cowboy to impress Jay, only for Jay to be too preoccupied with the real cowboy making moves on Gloria. The great reversal of positions adds something special to the Jay and Phil dynamic , which is often the best in the series. Tim Blake Nelson has a great role as the ranch's legitimate cowboy who keeps making Jay look bad.

The Bicycle Thief

Season 1, episode 2.

With only the second episode of the series, Modern Family was establishing some of the hilarious character traits and family quirks that would define the show. Like "Undeck the Halls," "The Bicycle Thief" takes a look at Phil's bold parenting tactics that often end up making him look foolish.

When Luke seems to have been careless with his new bike, Phil attempts to teach him a lesson, only to find himself in more trouble . Phil often steals the show and this is one of his best episodes.

It showcases, not only his charming shortcomings as a parent, but also establishes the running joke of Phil finding himself in compromising positions with beautiful women. Cam also manages to cement himself as a standout character in the show when Mitch recommends he downplay his theatricality at Lily's new daycare, leading to some hilarious scenes.

Phil's Sexy House

Season 7, episode 7.

In season 7, Phil was selling a high-tech home that he referred to as the "Sexy House." The entire family heard about how cool the home was and planned on sneaking in to experience it themselves . However, none of them expected the others to be there, creating the kind of fun hijinks seen in many of the funniest Modern Family episodes while also taking one key relationship to a new level.

Everyone ended up awkwardly running into each other.

Phil went to the house to play a virtual video game, Claire showed how perfect her relationship was by surprising Phil in a roleplay costume, Haley and Andy spent some time alone, and Alex and Reuben were secretly hooking up. Hilariously, everyone ended up awkwardly running into each other, and the episode is a textbook example of how Modern Family masterfully plays with big silly concepts with hilarious payoffs .

Season 3, Episode 15

"Aunt Mommy" shows the awkwardness that can come between families when a big promise is made during a night of drinking. After one too many glasses of wine, Claire decided to donate her eggs to Cam and Mitch , so they could have a baby that was part of both of them. The next morning, both couples realized the idea wasn't for them, but they didn't know how to tell the other. Meanwhile, Jay and Gloria fought over Manny's participation in football.

Everyone's truth eventually came out the next day at brunch, with the funny awkwardness capped by the hilarious Modern Family episode's cathartic final act. It is a great episode that highlights that there is a real loving nature and sweetness to this family even when they are making embarrassing blunders like this one.

Why Modern Family Never Revealed Who Was Filming The Documentary

Modern Family told its story by having characters speak directly to a documentary camera, only to never reveal who was actually filming them.

Run For Your Wife

Season 1, episode 6.

Another early episode in the series, this one highlights the fun dynamic that exists between Phil and Claire, being able to push each other's buttons in an entertaining way. In the Dunphy household, Phil bothers Claire by telling her that he's a faster runner than her .

Considering Claire ran miles every day, she knew he could never outrun her, and the two finally racing is as hilarious as expected. Meanwhile, Mitch and Cam are worried about Lily after she hit her head in their home, and they also accidentally lock their new baby in the car.

"Run For Your Wife" excels at balancing out Phil's self-destruction with poignant — and hilarious — moments of Mitch and Cam's early days as dads. Many parents will be able to relate to the sheer panic of these early days of being entirely overprotective of their babies.

Do You Believe In Magic

Season 8, episode 12.

In "Do You Believe In Magic," it was Valentine's Day for everyone, including little Joe, who gifted his teacher with a piece of Gloria's lingerie. However, what truly makes this one of the funniest Modern Family episodes is Claire and Phil. After lying about not caring about Valentine's Day, Claire — through a series of classic magic tricks — eventually revealed to Phil that she learned magic for him . There's nothing quite as touching or hilarious as Phil softly and very intensely telling Claire after the big reveal "I don't deserve you."

Claire and Phil's Valentine's Day adventures have always been a highlight and this one continued the hilarity with a wonderful buildup. It is a great reveal but also one of the sweetest moments for this Modern Family couple. Combining that with the awkwardness of Joe's storyline and it is one of the best episodes of the later seasons of the show.

Season 1, Episode 23

Modern Family makes the domestic life of these characters hilarious and fun, but it is always entertaining to see them taken out of that environment. In "Hawaii," Gloria surprises Jay for his birthday by going on a family vacation to Hawaii . On the trip, each family had their own dreams for their vacation. Hilariously, Claire treated her vacation as a business trip because trying to keep an eye on her kids was too stressful.

Meanwhile, Jay wanted a relaxing vacation but kept thinking about how old he was getting and that he needed to take better care of himself.

Seeing the entire family getaway to an exciting destination is always a fun change of pace for the show and this episode started that tradition by showing the hilarious misadventures they can get up to even on a relaxing getaway.

Three Turkeys

Season 6, episode 8.

In "Three Turkeys," chaos descends on Thanksgiving when Phil decides to take control of the cooking duties , and Gloria and Jay lie about where they will be eating for the holiday. Phil believes that he accidentally shrunk his turkey (when it's just been swapped), and Gloria and Jay come up with all sorts of excuses as to why they were at home.

Another hilarious Modern Family holiday season episode, "Three Turkeys" perfectly displays the stress that can go into cooking and gathering for Thanksgiving, with Phil stealing the show with his manic reaction to things not going as planned. There is also a lot of fun in Jay and Gloria's storyline which plays on the funny idea that they sometimes need a break from spending all of this time with the rest of the family.

Little Bo Bleep

Season 3, episode 13.

While the Dunphys were usually the stars of the episodes, season 3 began to give Cam, Lily, and Mitchell some hilarious storylines. In "Little Bo Bleep," Cam and Mitchell find that Lily won't stop saying curse words at the most random of moments .

While they struggle with this new parenting struggle, Jay suspects Gloira may not like his dog Stella and Claire's family provides unhelpful advice in preparation for her political debate. This is a perfect example of how Modern Family got away with edgy, sophomoric comedy through consistently wholesome storylines .

It all builds to a hilarious moment on Lily's big day with a joke that is perhaps predictable yet still lands the biggest laugh. It is a lot of fun seeing Cam and Mitch play the clueless parents throughout the series and this is one of the best displays of that.

Family Portrait

Season 1, episode 24.

From a mud fight to Phil and Gloria's kiss cam, there were plenty of highlights in Modern Family's season 1 finale. The episode revolves around the entire family off on their own adventures with the plan for them to assemble later for Claire's long-planned family photo .

Of course, things do not go as planned with the season ending with a perfect picture of them as a dysfunctional family. Not only was it full of fast-paced action, but all the characters got their moments to shine. New pairings (such as Alex and Manny, and Jay and Luke) allowed fans to see more depth to their family dynamic.

However, Mitch inadvertently destroying their apartment while chasing a pigeon, lovingly scored with Cam's rendition of "Ave Maria," is one of the funniest set pieces in the series. The comedy is balanced out with the tear-jerking reveal of the actual family portrait, a contemplation of how far the three families have come.

Season 1, Episode 1

Many sitcoms can struggle to find their footing early on as with so many characters to introduce, a tone to establish, and a storyline to kick off, it is hard to fit some genuine jokes in there as well. However, Modern Family 's first episode was a terrific introduction , hitting the ground running in a big way. After Luke shoots Alex with a BB gun, Claire insists that Phil has to shoot Luke in return — as they all agreed upon when Phil got the gun for Luke. Claire, Phil, Alex, and Luke then plan the shooting and put it on the family calendar.

Phil is undoubtedly the star of the pilot, including his rendition of "We're All In This Together" from High School Musical. It caps off with a clever reveal and the unforgettable moment of Cam introducing the family to Lily . It is a brilliant pilot which ends with the wonderful twist that these seemingly separate households are all part of the same extended family.

Season 5, Episode 18

In season 5's "Las Vegas," the whole clan got together for a weekend in the city of sin . Jay trying and consistently failing to flex his connections is one of the great moments of the patriarch of the family showing vulnerability. The episode also included Cam doing one of the worst things to Mitchell (in a hilarious way), Claire trying to make back the money she lost years before, and Phil attempting to join a very exclusive magic club.

It might not have ended up being the traditional trip they dreamed of, but it was chaotic fun. Once again, switching up the usual household setting provides an energy and spark to the comedy of this episode. The episode also does a great job of balancing the ensemble, using the casino setting to highlight all their quirks and eccentricities in hilarious and clever ways.
