Governors are in charge of the executive branch for each state or territory that they govern. Often, they will talk to citizens that live in their territory to get public opinions or take advice. Addressing someone like this may seem intimidating, especially if you haven’t talked to someone in political power before or you don’t know the protocol. However, if you save their full title for special events and never call them by their first name, you can be talking to governors tactfully and respectfully in no time. Talking In Person

Step 1 Call them Governor (Surname) when talking to them directly.

  • For example, if the governor’s name is Zackary Fravel, call them “Governor Fravel” when you speak to them.
  • If you are talking to the spouse of a governor, you can simply call them “Mr./Mrs. (Surname).”

Step 2 Call a governor “Sir/Ma’am” after addressing them by name.

  • For example, if the governor’s name is Mary Kent, you can say something like, “Acting Governor Kent is on her way here.”
  • Former governors do not get a special title. They can be referred to as Mr. or Mrs. (Surname).

Step 4 Introduce them formally with:

  • For example, if the governor of Washington’s name is James Hert and you are introducing him at a rally, you could say, “And now, The Honorable Hert, Governor of Washington.”
  • In Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and South Carolina, a Governor’s full title is “Your Excellency, Governor (Surname).”

Writing a Letter

Step 1 Address your letter to “The Honorable (Full Name), Governor of (State).”

  • For example, your letter should say something like: “The Honorable Maria Culley, Governor of California.”
  • If you are addressing your letter to a former governor or a governor’s spouse, you can just use “Mr./Mrs. (Surname).”

Step 2 Write “Dear Governor (Surname)” to begin your letter.

  • For example, start your letter with “Dear Governor Flinner.”

Step 3 Close your letter with “Sincerely, (Your Title and Full Name).”

  • ”Sincerely” is a formal way to say goodbye. You can also use phrases like “Best regards,” “Thanks,” and “Yours truly.”

How to Send a Letter to a Governor

Whether your letter is hand-written or typed, make the words your own and avoid form letters.

Taking the time to craft a letter to your governor helps focus some of his attention on your cause, but you must use formal titles when addressing the letter and get quickly to the point without too much fluff. Keeping the letter respectful from the address on the envelope to the signature line makes it more likely to spark a response from the governor or someone in his office.

1 Addressing the Letter

Any letter sent to the governor should acknowledge her position from the beginning. On the envelope and at the start of the letter, use "The Honorable" followed by the governor's first and last name. The second line should read "Governor of" and the state name. Then add more lines for the official mailing address, typically found on the "Contact" page of the governor's office website. Check the spelling of the governor's name on the contact page as well, or call the governor's office and ask the receptionist for the proper spelling and address.

For the salutation line, write "Dear Governor" followed by the governor's last name . Begin your letter after the salutation.

2 Structuring the Letter

It's unlikely your letter reaches the governor initially. Instead, someone in his office probably reads incoming mail and makes notes. Whether the governor or an aide opens your letter, getting to the point immediately in the correspondence shows respect for the person's time and gives your letter a better chance of getting attention.

Use the first sentence to explain why you're writing, such as asking support for a bill or explaining how a recent decision negatively affected you . Explain your position using statistics or specific examples when possible, staying concise and on point while remaining respectful.

Use bullet points when possible to make the letter easier to read, and clearly state what action you would like the governor to take on your behalf, such as requesting that he sign a specific bill into law.

3 Ending the Letter

Always thank the governor for his time as you end the letter and offer to help his office regarding the issue. Condense the main point of the letter -- such as your requested action -- in one sentence to ensure it doesn't get lost in the body of the letter. Sign the letter with the formal "Sincerely" followed by your full name a few lines down. Leave three to four lines before you print your name to make room for your signature. Sign the letter in blue or black ink.

Include your address and email address, especially if you are writing to the governor of your home state. Voters' concerns always carry more weight.

4 Sending Email

Before you send a letter to the governor, check the contact page of her website. Many include a link to send an email, as well as links for specific requests such as invitations for the governor to speak at events. If the contact page includes an email address, the governor's staff might prefer that you send your letter -- still written in a formal style -- by email instead of regular mail. If you're unsure of the best way to send the letter, call the governor's office and ask which way is preferable.

Former governors continue to be addressed in writing as the Honorable’ (Full Name). The rule is ‘once an honorable, always an honorable’ (more or less). [For more on the use of the Honorable follow the link in the list at right.]

But in spite of what you hear in the media, only a current governor is formally addressed in conversation or in a salutation as Governor (Name). In conversation or in a salutation, former governors go back to whatever form of address they used they were before they were the governor.

Here’s the rule: Offices of which many people hold the same office at the same time … senators, judges, doctors, Navy captains … continue to be addressed using the honorific used while they were in office. There was never a time a senator, judge, doctor or captain was the only one holding that job.

But offices which are held by a single person at a time … the president, the vice president, the governor of (state), the mayor of (city) … any office you can put a the   in front of … formally goes back to the form of address to which they were entitled before they assumed office. At any one time there is only one person holding that job.

Forms of address – like elevated precedence, the corner office and the good parking place – are courtesies of the office  and are granted to the current office holder. They are not courtesies that once attained – become the property of former office holders.

You will hear in the media such officials informally referred to as Governor (Name). It’s not the form one would use in writing on a letter.

They are not the governor anymore.

How to Address a Former Governor in Conversation?

I read a story recently which said that the organizers of a former governor’s book tour have asked the public to address her as Governor (Surname) at her book signings. Is that proper? ——————– – Michael Perry

Dear Mr. Perry: It’s not correct. Officially she is addressed as Ms./Ms./Mrs./Dr./etc. (Surname) … or whatever honorific to which he/she was entitled to before being governor.

Here is the tradition behind this: Jobs of which there is only one office holder at a time … Governor of a state Mayor of city, President, Vice President of the US, Speaker of the House of Representatives …. do not continue to be directly addressed in writing or conversation by their former ‘office’ because it is not respectful to the current office holder and confusing to those in the (organization/state/whatever) as to who is currently in charge.

Jobs of which many hold the same office/rank at the same time DO continue to be addressed by their former honorific … Senator, Judge, Captain, Admiral, General, Professor …. after leaving their position.

Having worked with many ‘formers’ I find they know their correct honorific. But the handlers may not know what’s correct -or- encourage the reference to their boss’s former position to curry favors – which I suspect is the case here.

How to Address a Governor-elect?

Dear G.P.: In the USA the rule is – once elected in a general election, one is immediately addressed in writing on the letter’s address block, on an envelope, or in a complete introduction as:

Reason? One is entitled to be addressed as ‘the Honorable’ once one has been elected in a general election.

But in the salutation or in conversation use … —- —- Dear Mr./Ms./Dr./etc. (Surname):

—- —- … or whatever honorific to which he or she is entitled to – prior to the election.

Use of ‘Governor (Name)’ is reserved until he or she has taken their oath. If a governor-elect had been a private citizen he or she would continue to be addressed in a salutation or conversation as ‘Mr./Ms./Dr./etc. (Name)’ until he or she is sworn into the new office.

You will hear in the media such officials referred to as “Governor-elect (Name)”. But that is a reporter referring to a citizen in a news story as ‘according to Arlington County Football Coach Jim Smith, this year’s team…’ It’s not the form one would use in writing in a letter.

Think of Governor-elect  an adjective which describes his or her status and is used for an identification – not as a form of address.

How to Address an Acting Governor?

How do you introduce a Lieutenant Governor  when he or she is – at that moment – the Acting Governor? Is he or she addressed in conversation or introduced as Acting Governor (Name)? ——————– – FG

Hi FG: Identify the person as the acting governor, but the term is not used in oral address as in Acting Governor (Surname).

An acting governor is not formally addressed orally as Governor (Name) either: He or she is not actually The Governor.

Orally address an acting governor with the honorific to which her or she is entitled – based on the office he or she actually holds.   E.g. a lieutenant governor might be the one serving as the acting governor.   Mr./Ms. (Name)  is the typical honorific used with addressing a lieutenant governor.

While he or she is not directly addressed in conversation as Acting Governor (Surname)  one might refer to him or her as that in the third person, such as: … “ Acting Governor (Name)  will be arriving in 20 minutes.”

When formally introducing an acting governor say: May I present the Honorable (Full Name), Acting Governor of (Official Name of State).

COMMUTATIONS

People who have been convicted of a crime and are currently serving their California prison sentence may apply for a commutation (reduction of sentence). 

In deciding whether to grant a commutation, the Governor’s Office will carefully review commutation applications and consider: 

  • the impact of a commutation on the community, including whether the grant is consistent with public safety and in the interests of justice; 
  • the age and circumstances of the offense and the sentence imposed, and the age of the applicant at the time; 
  • the applicant’s self-development and conduct since the offense, including whether the applicant has made use of available rehabilitative programs and has identified and addressed treatment needs; 
  • the applicant’s need for a commutation; and
  • the applicant’s plans upon release from custody. 

Applicants will be notified when the Governor takes action on a commutation application. 

The Board of Parole Hearings, a division of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, investigates commutation applications. The investigation will include a review of the applicant’s criminal history records, court and police records, and the applicant’s prison record (or C-File). 

The Governor cannot grant a commutation to applicants with more than one felon y conviction without the approval of the California Supreme Court. The Governor’s Office requests this approval if needed. 

HOW TO APPLY FOR A COMMUTATION OF SENTENCE

You do not need a lawyer to apply for a commutation. 

(1) Submit a completed Commutation Application (2 pages) to the Governor’s Office. You may, but are not required to, submit additional information or copies of relevant documents in support of your application, such as letters of support; and

(2) Submit a completed Notice of Intent to Apply for Clemency (1 page) to the District Attorney in the county of the conviction for your commitment offense.

Send application materials to the Governor’s Office by email to commutations @gov.ca.gov . If you do not have access to email you can send the application by mail to Office of the Governor, Attn: Legal Affairs/Parole and Clemency, 1021 O Street, Suite 9000, Sacramento, CA 95814 . The Governor’s Office cannot accept in-person delivery. Please do not send original documents because application materials cannot be returned. 

The Governor is not required to consider an application and there is no set timeline for review. There is no application fee and a lawyer is not required to apply for a commutation. For additional information about commutations, visit the Judicial Council’s self-help website .

What should I write in a parent governor statement?

If you are applying to be a parent governor or trustee you will be asked to write a short statement saying why you are interested in volunteering and what skills you would bring to the role. If an election is needed this statement will help other parents choose between the candidates.

In many schools volunteers are thin on the ground so the statement may not be vital, as you will be elected unopposed if you are the only volunteer. However, it is still a good idea to show you understand the role of governor/trustee in your statement.

This page provides guidance on what to include in your statement and some parent governor statement examples of 50, 100 and 250 words you can adapt for your circumstances.

Your Connection To the School

Say how old your children are and their current year. If your children have just joined the school you have a reason to want it to succeed for years to come and the same applies if you have more than one child attending.

Mention any other ties you have to the school such as previous volunteer work, helping out in classrooms or on trips, or supporting the PTA; anything that shows your commitment to the school and your reliability as a volunteer.

You could mention how long you have lived in the area and what the school means to you. If it is a church school talk a little about your faith and show you understand the aims of the school in this respect.

Your Understanding of School Governance

All school governors have three main roles.

  • To ensure the school has a clear vision, ethos and strategic direction.
  • To hold the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school.
  • To oversee the budget and finances and make sure money is well spent.

Write about any aspects of governance you could contribute to. Governor responsibilities are wide but include scrutinising budgets, approving policies on all aspects of school life, planning how the school will improve, discussing why some groups of children are not achieving as well as others, making sure children are safe and dealing with staffing issues.

Governors are often described as being a “critical friend” to the school. They are there to support the school and help it improve, but they must also be willing to challenge the headteacher and senior leaders when necessary, ask why the school is struggling in a particular area and what can be done to improve it.

Search for the school’s latest OFSTED report and look for any remarks about governance. Are there any weaknesses of governance you could help to improve? Do you understand the challenges a school might face in terms of catchment area, budget restrictions or high levels of children with special needs?

If you are volunteering at an academy within a multi-academy trust show that you understand whether you will be governing as a trustee on the main governing board or a local governor on a local governing body.

What skills can you bring to the role?

Any of the following skills will be useful on the governing body:

  • accounting, budgets and finance experience
  • management of buildings
  • health and safety
  • data analysis
  • human resources experience
  • interpersonal skills, working in a team
  • knowledge of education, the curriculum, special educational needs and safeguarding or child protection
  • managing staff and hiring employees
  • work where you had to keep things confidential.

You could also write about your commitment to undertake training and show that you understand governors need to attend regular meetings and visit the school.

What Not To Include!

If you mention any of the following items you will show that you do not understand the role of the governing body. Parent governors do not :

  • fundraise – this is usually done by a parent teacher association (PTA)
  • represent parents – this is a common misunderstanding but parent governors are not the voice of the parents. They have the same role as any other governor on the board
  • vote in favour of whatever the majority of parents want – if there is a controversial issue that parents are angry about it is any governor’s job to vote for whatever they believe is best for the school as a whole
  • discuss individual children (in most cases) – governors take an overview of the school and make strategic decisions about budgets, policies and development plans (although one exception would be if a child is at risk of exclusion)
  • interfere with the day-to-day running of the school – the headteacher runs the school, governors hold the headteacher to account
  • rubber-stamp everything that comes their way – you will need to be confident enough to ask some difficult questions if results are disappointing or mistakes are made

Parent Governor Statement Examples

Here are some example statements you can use as a starting point. I have written these with the assumption that you are a new parent governor, but if you are already on the board you should also include details of your governance work, eg: feedback from OFSTED or external advisers about how the board is run or what contributions you have made in a link role .

Don’t worry if you don’t have a job that particularly fits in with governance (or you’re not working at all) as people from all walks of life can do the role – just show your enthusiasm and demonstrate your understanding of school governance.

Parent Governor Statement – 50 words

My son Tim has just joined the school in Y1. I work as an accountant and would like to use my financial skills and experience analysing budgets to give back in a volunteer role. I am keen to attend training and get to know the school.

Parent Governor Statement – 100 words

I am keen to join the governing body as many of my family members have attended this school. My two older children attended and my daughter Sarah is in Y9.

I have volunteered for many school trips and I would now like to become a governor to help steer the school in the right direction and retain its excellent reputation for academic success and happy, friendly children.

I have been in retail for 10 years where I have worked well with people from all backgrounds and gained knowledge of health and safety. I understand the need for governors to be demanding but fair.

Parent Governor Statement – 250 words

Malory Towers Primary is a terrific school with an outstanding OFSTED rating and I would like to help the school continue to improve and develop.

My name is James Mallow and my twins are in Y4. My day job is in data analysis and I believe these skills will transfer well to the work of school governance, helping the school to analyse the attainment gaps between groups of pupils and pinpoint where the school needs to be doing more for our children.

I am lucky enough to have the time to commit to a demanding volunteer role as my firm provide time off for school governors. This means that I am able to attend meetings, governor training and visit the school during the day.

I am particularly keen to ensure that all children are safeguarded well and can fulfil their full potential whatever their background, special educational needs or disabilities.

I am not afraid to ask difficult questions if necessary on behalf of all the children this school serves. I am also keen to support the school and all of its dedicated staff who work so hard to keep this place running smoothly.

Although I have no experience of school governance specifically I have served on the board of a small charity which had responsibility for a modest budget and made tough decisions about which projects to fund and how money could be best spent.

A scholarship application letter is a formal document that convinces the recipient that the sender is the best pick for the scholarship. It highlights the applicant’s qualifications, achievements, and experiences to ace the grant. 

The application letter also states your reasons for applying for the scholarship, as well as an explanation of how the grant will help in your studies.

To add a “personal touch” to this letter, you may use personal anecdotes and testimonials. However, the letter’s tone should be formal rather than casual because it is an academic/professional document.

Although both documents increase your chances of getting the grant, they convey different messages.

A scholarship application letter convinces the reader that you’re an exceptional candidate for the scholarship grant. Specifically, it highlights the most compelling reasons why you deserve the scholarship.  You can focus on your academic achievements, socioeconomic condition, or personal attributes. 

This letter may include personal anecdotes, testimonials, and other supporting information that will help with your application. You may even state who your role model is and how they influence your passion to achieve your dreams.

Meanwhile, the main focus of an LOI is to express your interest in applying for a scholarship. Your qualifications, experiences, and socioeconomic conditions are stated briefly as supporting details. For this reason, an LOI is usually shorter, more straightforward, and has less room for personal anecdotes.  

There are also some differences between their structure. The upper part of a scholarship application letter indicates your details (name, address, contact details). In an LOI, this part is usually located at the bottom.

A scholarship essay usually asks a particular question like, “Why do you deserve the scholarship?” , “How can our scholarship help you?” or “Who is your biggest inspiration?” It’s important in a scholarship essay that your answer is well-thought-out, clear, and creative.

Meanwhile, a scholarship application letter is more of an extension of your documentary requirements. It expounds the details indicated to highlight your best attributes so that the scholarship committee will pick you. The topic of the letter is “you,” and there’s no question you’re supposed to answer.

1. Personal Information : Located at the top of the letter, this section is where you indicate your full name, address, and contact details.

2. Date: The date when the letter is submitted

3. Recipient: This is where you indicate the name, position, and institution/company of the letter’s recipient

4. Salutation: If the recipient’s name is unspecified, you may use the line “To whom it may concern”

5. Introduction: This part includes your name and current educational attainment, as well as a brief statement of your desire to apply for a scholarship and the reason/s behind it

6. Body of the letter: This part highlights everything that makes you deserving of a scholarship (e.g., personal attributes, academic achievements, extra-curricular activities, etc.). It may also include personal anecdotes and testimonials.

How To Write a Scholarship Application Letter

There are two reasons why you need to do this before drafting your letter. 

First, to avoid stating wrong information in the letter. 

Second, to help you decide what your “focus” is so that the letter will suit the scholarship requirements. Suppose the grant requires the applicant to have exceptional leadership skills. To meet this qualification, you need to brush up on your memory for any leadership roles you had in the school and include them in your letter.

Your letterhead should contain three sections: your details (name, address, and contact info), the date when the letter is submitted, and your recipient’s details.

Afterward, provide a short salutation like “Dear <insert name>” and “Greetings <insert name> .

Performing this step completes your letter’s introduction. In case you’ve recently graduated, mention your alma mater.

Don’t forget to mention in this portion your understanding of the scholarship’s goal and how it is aligned with your aspirations and current circumstance. 

In the example above, the sender wrote that the scholarship aims to help underprivileged students pursuing health-related courses. Thus, she wrote that her dream of becoming a physician led her to major in Biology.

Finally, state your reason for applying for a scholarship.

Your goal in this step is to complete your letter’s body. State here your best attributes that make you stand out from other applicants. It depends on you how many paragraphs you’ll write for this section.

Here is some information you can include in your letter’s body:

  • Academic achievements (e.g., consistent Dean’s lister, class valedictorian/salutatorian, academic honors like Best in Math or Best Research Paper, or high GWA , etc.)
  • Extra-curricular experiences (e.g., leadership roles in the Student Council, student organizations, and NGOs, as well as awards received from competitions, etc.)
  • Certifications (e.g., TESDA National Certificate)
  • Work and internship experiences
  • Personal attributes (e.g., interpersonal skills, time-management skills, perseverance, etc.)
  • Other information that may suit the scholarship requirements. For example, if you’re applying for sports-related grants, you can mention the competitions you’ve won, your experiences as a student-athlete from another school, etc.

Only select attributes that are related to the scholarship’s requirements. For example, if they are looking for good academic standing, you must focus on featuring your grades and academic achievements. If the grant is looking for leadership skills, then highlight your leadership roles in student clubs or even in non-academic organizations.

You may also add personal anecdotes in this portion. For instance, the sender of the sample letter above shares her experience meeting a doctor who inspired him to pursue the same profession.

Briefly mention that the scholarship will help you accomplish your studies and ease your family’s financial burden. Afterward, thank the recipient for taking the time to read your letter.

Close your letter by adding a closing remark (e.g., Regards, Sincerely, etc.) and affixing your signature. 

  • Strictly follow the required word count, if there’s any. To save time reading tons of letters that scholarship committees receive, they set word count limits that applicants should follow. Hence, no need to make your application letter wordy; as long as it contains the most essential details, that would be enough. As the saying goes, “brevity is the soul of wit.”
  • Be truthful. Do not include misleading information to stand out from the competition. Some scholarship committees conduct cross-checking to verify the information indicated in application letters. Get caught and lose your chance to enjoy the grant. 
  • Don’t be “too emotional.” It’s true that your letter becomes more convincing if you state your challenges and economic hardships. However, over-relying on “emotional appeal” might repulse your reader. Thus, avoid oversharing private matters in your letter.  Moreover, refrain from adding “rant” statements (e.g., education is for the privileged only, tuition hikes are anti-poor, etc. ) in your letter. There’s a different avenue to express those frustrations.

Dear Secretary Austin:

As Governors representing 53 states and territories, we are writing to express our strong opposition to Legislative Proposal 480 (LP480) submitted by the Department of Defense to the Senate Armed Services Committee. This legislation disregards gubernatorial authorities regarding the National Guard and undermines over 100 years of precedent as well as national security and military readiness.

Ensuring the National Guard is adequately equipped with resources and capabilities to serve as the operational combat reserve for national security missions and to support domestic emergencies is among the National Governors Association’s highest priorities. It is imperative that Governors retain the authority laid out in United States Code (U.S.C.) Title 32, Section 104. LP480 undercuts this critical authority by allowing a transfer of covered space units from the National Guard to the United States Space Force without abiding by Title 32 or Title 10.

Specifically, section 18238 of Title 10 states that there should be no removal or withdrawal of a unit of the Air National Guard without consultation and approval from Governors. Additionally, section 104 of Title 32 states there is to be no change in the branch, organization, or allotment of National Guard units within a state or territory without the approval of its Governor.

For over a century, Title 10 and Title 32 of U.S.C have upheld gubernatorial authority over the National Guard. National Guard assets are critical components of states’ and territories’ responses to crises. Governors must maintain full authority as Commanders in Chief of these assets to effectively protect operational readiness and America’s communities. Legislation that sidesteps, eliminates or otherwise reduces Governors’ authority within their states and territories undermines longstanding partnerships, precedence, military readiness and operational efficacy. This action also negatively affects the important relationships between Governors and DOD at a time when we need to have full trust and confidence between the two to meet the growing threats posed by the era of strategic competition as well as natural disasters.  LP480 also poses a threat to the careers of state-based service members who will be forced to choose between state service or continuing in their current field at a time when there are already significant recruitment challenges. An action like this will violate the trust of the brave women and men who have volunteered to serve our states and our nation.

Governors look forward to collaborating with congressional leaders and federal officials to ensure strong national security. Our top priority is the success of critical national security missions, both at home and abroad, which necessitates protecting Governors’ rights to lead as Commanders in Chiefs. Any federal efforts or legislative actions intended to disregard or weaken these authorities will negatively impact our ability to serve the nation and deeply damage the relationship between states and the federal government.          

For these reasons, we urge you to oppose LP480. Thank you again for your attention to this critical matter.

STATE OF EDUCATION IN ENUGU STATE & WAYS TO IMPROVE IT

One of the primary roles of education is to build and sustain individual and society’s development. It renews and improves the economic, social, political and cultural aspects of any state. Education upgrades the living standard of citizens and enables people to become better and more productive citizens. It is a human right that creates a safe, healthy and prosperous society. It changes the visions and perspectives of individuals, enhances critical decisions and improves democracy. Education in Enugu state is suffering from decades of neglects and abandonment.

Your Excellency, it is on record you mounted the mantle of leadership of Enugu State apparently with good intentions to transform the state far beyond the height achieved by your predecessors. To demonstrate seriousness to this course, your administration started by rolling out massive projects for execution which cut across the length and breadth of this state.

I know a lot of appreciable progress have been made in Education in Enugu State but there are still more to be done so that our people can enjoy the important benefits of Education.

Your Excellency, it is my humble intention therefore to discuss the state of education in Enugu state and ways to improve it. Some of the crucial challenges education in Enugu State is facing that need immediate attention include;

  • Infrastructural deficit and decay: So many class room buildings and staff offices of most primary, secondary schools and high institutions in Enugu State have been dilapidated. They are in deplorable condition thereby affecting the learning process. In some of the schools you see students sitting on the ordinary floor to receive lectures. Some classrooms are not roofed, during the raining season students sit under the rain to learn leading to students getting sick always. Most of these buildings were renovated 10 years ago or thereabout. Unfortunately, no new building has been elected to replace the dilapidated structures.

Most primary and secondary schools lack lavatory and convenience. This has led to students defecating and messing up the school environment. In some schools, students resort to defecating in open class rooms and dilapidated building.

  • Unqualified teachers and lecturers: Most schools in Enugu State are filled up with unqualified teachers and lecturers. How these teachers and lecturers managed to secured their teaching job in our secondary, primary schools and high institutions is a question that will be hard for me to crack. It is a very serious situation, when teachers cannot pass their exams that they are supposed to teach the children to pass. The result of this is the production of half-baked students. Students who will indulge in examination malpractices in other to pass their exam. Graduates who cannot defend themselves in outside world.
  • Inadequate instructional materials: Most of the schools in Enugu State lack instructional materials like white board and markers, ICT centres, sciences books, physic and chemistry laboratory. The general school library is nothing to write home about; they are not well equipped and most are not functional.  These instructional materials are powerful tools that enhances the learning skills of the students. We are in era of internet technology; yet you hardly see school in Enugu State that is computerized. If you visit the staff rooms during computation of students’ results, papers flying everywhere will chase you away. When students are equipped with the necessary materials they need; it helps them meet with up international standard of education.
  • High tuition fee and extortion: The high tuition fees and unsolicited fees collected from students has led to millions of students dropping out of school. The private schools are not helping matters. There is gross extortion of students by teachers in our school. It baffles me how headmaster, principal or whoever that is involve could turn money into hand-work and some of the lecturers has made it mandatory that students must buy their handout or text book before they will pass their course. The side effect of this are high illiteracy level, increase crime, and poverty in our state etc.

On Infrastructural deficit and decay; committee should be set up through Post primary School education board to ascertain the level of infrastructural deficit and decay in our primary and secondary school. Again, committee should be set up through the Board of Senate in universities and high institutions to review the level of infrastructural deficit and decay in our university and high institutions. The outcome of the reviews should be communicated to you through the appropriate channel for immediate action.

On Unqualified teachers and lecturers: Strategies for addressing the challenges of teacher training and professional development; technical and vocational education should be adopted. Again, policies pertaining to recruitment of teachers and lecturers in our states schools should be review.

On Inadequate instructional materials: There is need to examine, review, equip and upgrade by appropriate bodies some of the instructional materials in our schools for quality and continuous improvement of our student.

On High tuition fee and Extortion in our school: Government should review and cut down the tuition fees in our schools. Free education at primary and post-primary school level should be adopted to encourage education in our state.

Serious consideration should be made to our quest to improving the lot of our people through the provision of quality and functional education for all, at all levels. Today, it is those who acquire the most qualitative education, equipped with requisite skills and training, and empowered with practical know how that are leading the rest. We cannot afford to continue lagging behind. Education is our launch-pad to a more successful, more productive and more prosperous future. If the education of our state is weak or dysfunctional, society and its development will also be weak and dysfunctional.

Your Excellency, I thank you for all your good works in Enugu State. Also, I appeal that you use your good office to address this issue confronting education in our state today. I will continue to pray for you and for your vision for our dear State. Enugu State is in hand of God.
