I love the work that UBC has begun to do towards decolonizing their campus by offering multiple resources to promote Indigenous knowledge (for Indigenous students and settlers alike). For all new students, I highly recommend taking the free Decolonization Tour offered by the Belkin Art Gallery, which breaks down the colonial history of UBC and how it has begun to repair and fortify its relationship with the Musqueam peoples. If you are an Indigenous student, I highly recommend meeting for lunch on Tuesdays at the Longhouse!

Scholarships & awards (merit-based funding)

All applicants are encouraged to review the awards listing to identify potential opportunities to fund their graduate education. The database lists merit-based scholarships and awards and allows for filtering by various criteria, such as domestic vs. international or degree level.

Graduate Research Assistantships (GRA)

Many professors are able to provide Research Assistantships (GRA) from their research grants to support full-time graduate students studying under their supervision. The duties constitute part of the student's graduate degree requirements. A Graduate Research Assistantship is considered a form of fellowship for a period of graduate study and is therefore not covered by a collective agreement. Stipends vary widely, and are dependent on the field of study and the type of research grant from which the assistantship is being funded.

Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTA)

Graduate programs may have Teaching Assistantships available for registered full-time graduate students. Full teaching assistantships involve 12 hours work per week in preparation, lecturing, or laboratory instruction although many graduate programs offer partial TA appointments at less than 12 hours per week. Teaching assistantship rates are set by collective bargaining between the University and the Teaching Assistants' Union .

Graduate Academic Assistantships (GAA)

Academic Assistantships are employment opportunities to perform work that is relevant to the university or to an individual faculty member, but not to support the student’s graduate research and thesis. Wages are considered regular earnings and when paid monthly, include vacation pay.

Financial aid (need-based funding)

Canadian and US applicants may qualify for governmental loans to finance their studies. Please review eligibility and types of loans .

All students may be able to access private sector or bank loans.

Foreign government scholarships

Many foreign governments provide support to their citizens in pursuing education abroad. International applicants should check the various governmental resources in their home country, such as the Department of Education, for available scholarships.

Working while studying

The possibility to pursue work to supplement income may depend on the demands the program has on students. It should be carefully weighed if work leads to prolonged program durations or whether work placements can be meaningfully embedded into a program.

International students enrolled as full-time students with a valid study permit can work on campus for unlimited hours and work off-campus for no more than 20 hours a week.

A good starting point to explore student jobs is the UBC Work Learn program or a Co-Op placement .

Tax credits and RRSP withdrawals

Students with taxable income in Canada may be able to claim federal or provincial tax credits.

Canadian residents with RRSP accounts may be able to use the Lifelong Learning Plan (LLP) which allows students to withdraw amounts from their registered retirement savings plan (RRSPs) to finance full-time training or education for themselves or their partner.

Please review Filing taxes in Canada on the student services website for more information.

Cost Estimator

Applicants have access to the cost estimator to develop a financial plan that takes into account various income sources and expenses.

2024 Dr. Dean illustrated how participation in adaptive skateboarding and wheelchair motocross may offer health benefits and social benefits to physically disabled people and illuminated how larger social, cultural, political, economic, and structural forces may influence disabled riders' participation in different sporting spaces.
2024 Dr. Ramachandran explored the history of body classification systems in health and sport-focused areas, through the example of the somatotype. She found that the somatotype was used to characterize race, class, athletic ability, and intelligence biologically, demonstrating how measurement methods are value laden and warrant critical exploration.
2023 Dr. Chen combined experimental and probability-based computational approaches to study how the brain integrates motion sensations into perceived self-motion. His research advanced our knowledge in sensory processing at both the individual neuron and sensory organ levels, offering insights for future works in neuro-prosthetics and rehabilitation.
2023 Dr. Ahmadian investigated the potential cardiovascular benefits of breathing low oxygen in a rodent model of spinal cord injury. His works lay the foundation for future translational hypoxia therapies to help restore blood pressure control in individuals living with spinal cord injury.
2023 Dr. Wierts examined factors that contribute to the well-being and exercise behaviour, and demonstrated the importance of identity in predicting exercise behaviour. He further examined key antecedents of exercise identity and the feasibility of a group-based exercise program for promoting exercise identity and well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic.
2023 Dr. Sauvé examined the perspectives of national team coaches, National Sport Federation performance directors, and Olympians regarding factors they felt undermined and supported Olympic-level athlete well-being. The findings and recommendations were discussed with influential leaders within the Canadian elite sport environment, with the intention of optimizing athlete well-being in the future.
2023 Dr. Fagan examined if physical activity prevents substance use among Canadian youth. Overall, there was no evidence that physical activity confers broad, universal benefits in prevention. However, sport participation may provide a contextual experience that enhances school connectedness which in turn is associated with substance use prevention.
2023 Dr. Yogev examined the reliability and validity of wearable near-infrared spectroscopy during exercise, to better inform practitioners about the utility of measuring muscle oxygenation in field conditions. His work provides valuable guidelines for muscle oxygenation monitoring in real-time during exercise.
2023 Dr. Leahy studied the effect of age and sex on the human skeletal muscle metaboreflex. His studies further our understanding on the effects of healthy ageing on reflex cardiovascular function, as well as sex differences in blood flow distribution and ventilatory control during exercise.

Kinesiology

Kinesiology

Doctor of philosophy (PhD)

Thesis-based program

Program overview.

Kinesiology is not just the study of movement. We are the length and breadth of the human condition, from the joy of competition, to the steps taken by cancer patients on their road back to wellness. We are in schools encouraging healthier habits and in labs researching the mysteries of why one child becomes obese while another doesn’t. Our graduate students are mentored by some of the top professors and researchers in the field in their original investigations, with the goal to advance the study of kinesiology, and to create leaders whose work will have an impact on society. Sharing knowledge is vital, and we work closely with other faculties, like the biomedical researchers in the Schulich School of Engineering and the mental health researchers in the Cumming School of Medicine.

Recent Penn graduate Blake Broszus crashes out of 2024 Olympics in the second round of the men’s foil individual

The 2024 wharton graduate made his second straight appearance at the olympic games representing team canada.

Sports is all about peaking at the right moments. For recent Penn graduate Blake Broszus, there was no time better to hit his stride than ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

As a foilist on the Penn fencing team, the San Jose, Calif. native was part of a team that made Penn program history this past year. Broszus’ efforts at the 2024 NCAA Fencing Championships set up a final match that guaranteed that a Quaker would bring home the individual title — a feat that had not been accomplished in 27 years .

Ultimately, Broszus fell just short, coming in second to teammate and recent graduate Bryce Louie, but the second place finish at the biggest stage in the collegiate world prepared Broszus’ to achieve his goal of the 2024 Olympic Games.

Broszus is no stranger to the Olympics. The two-time NCAA qualifier appeared at his first games in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where he helped the Canadian side to a ninth-place finish in the men’s foil team. The nod for a spot on the team came after earning two straight bronze medals at the junior Pan American Championships in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

Ahead of the 2024 Olympics, Broszus placed fifth in the foil at the 2023 Pan American Games, leading Canada to a silver-medal finish in the team foil event. The performance was more than enough to secure himself a spot on the contingent of athletes that Team Canada was sending to Paris. Broszus is also one of 12 athletes with Penn affiliations to make the trip this year.

Broszus kicked off his time in Paris on a strong note, taking the strip for his first bout on July 29. Continuing the winning momentum that Broszus had built up over his senior season representing the Red and Blue, the recent Wharton graduate bested Kruz Schembri of the U.S. Virgin Islands with an emphatic 15-8 scoreline in the men's foil individual round of 64.

Unfortunately for Broszus, he would hit a wall in the round of 32. Coming up against Italy’s Tommaso Marini, Broszus found himself on the wrong side of a 15-9 scoreline, bowing out of the competition prematurely.

With the result, Broszus was ultimately unable to fulfill his ambitions of podiuming individually at the 2024 Olympics. Despite the loss, Broszus’ time representing Team Canada hasn’t come to an end just yet. Broszus is set to compete again in Paris in the men’s team foil competition, looking to improve on the group’s ninth-place finish three years prior.

Canada is set to kick things off in the competition in a quarterfinal face-off against Japan on Aug. 4 at 5:50 a.m. EDT. Beyond that, Broszus is also slated to compete later this year at the Tournoi Satellite in the men’s foil individual that is set to take place in Bucharest, Romania on Sept. 21.

Minister of Tourism Soraya Martinez Ferrada, left, is given a tour of the biomedical labs at Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal by professor Gregory de Crescenzo in Montreal, on May 6. Christinne Muschi/The Canadian Press

Roseann O’Reilly Runte is president and chief executive officer at the Canada Foundation for Innovation. She is the author of Canadians Who Innovate: The Trailblazers and Ideas that Are Changing the World.

U.S. National Academy of Sciences head Marcia McNutt called last week for a national research strategy “to regain American leadership in science.” She cited China’s extraordinary investments in research and the impressive results. China is surpassing the United States in the number of patents and scientific papers and boasts large, cutting-edge facilities and new pharmaceutical products.

The Canada Foundation for Innovation recently put forward a white paper plan for research in Canada which also takes note of the investments being made to speed the pace of research and innovation, not only in China but in South Korea, Japan, Singapore, India and Thailand. However, where Dr. McNutt calls for increased government spending as the single solution for the U.S., which has greater capacity for R&D spending and can afford to compete resolutely with China, our priorities and possibilities are more nuanced.

Increased spending would of course be more than welcome, but more importantly, Canada needs to be competitive while succeeding, through collaboration with other nations.

Canada is already doing much of this. We have always shared research with the U.S., Britain and Europe. We have assiduously built bridges across the Atlantic and are proud to have joined Horizon Europe as an associated member. But that is not enough, and Canada needs to do more.

Managers, managers everywhere – but do people really want such jobs?

We must recognize that no single nation can resolve the challenges the world faces today and understand that every nation cannot and should not replicate the huge research infrastructure which is being constructed around the world. Through international collaboration we can create shared facilities while focusing investments on research facilities in Canada with special capabilities that are able to attract and serve researchers from around the world.

We must consider how we go about such international collaboration. While papers and patents are important, the goal of research must be to improve life and livelihoods, health and well-being, safety and sustainability , and vibrant communities with access to education for all. We need to look not only at solving problems in our country or similar advanced economies but at sharing resources and solutions with nations in the Global South, for example.

Canada has a lot in common with the Global South, and thus the solutions we find to our problems can have a great impact on both continents. We both have natural resources to develop and face similar sustainability challenges. We both have innovative populations and great expanses of land, but we need to create educational opportunities, health , transportation, sanitation and communications facilities that reach equitably into remote areas.

We must focus on the importance of science diplomacy and the opportunities not just for success in new scientific discoveries but for the understanding that dialogue can bring. We also stress the benefits of scientists working together to explore the secrets of the tiniest quantum bits and the limitless possibilities of outer space. These may be beyond our ken, but through collaboration, perhaps not that far beyond our reach.

There was once a race for space: which nation would be first to step on the surface of the moon? Today, we think of our solar system and others beyond as possible locations to which humankind might one day escape from the damage we continue to wreak on our planet. Alternatively, we imagine ways to restore nature’s ability to support human existence here.

These are problems so great and possibilities so extraordinary that no nation can undertake to solve or achieve them alone. This must be a century of co-operation and collaboration. This is a time when we must all work together. Canada must participate strategically, develop our crucial skills and talents, and lead by bringing other nations together thoughtfully and methodically in the name of science for the good of all.
