We're exploring the world of PhD scholarships in Canada in this blog, which is meant to serve as a resource for all of you intelligent people looking for the ideal chance to establish yourself in Canadian academia.

Why Study PhD in Canada?

Ever wondered why so many folks choose Canada for their Ph.D. journey? Well, let's spill the tea on that! Here are some cool reasons why students pick the Great White North for their study abroad:

1. Top-Notch Universities : Canada houses some of the coolest universities globally, and many of them rock the charts in the top 100.

2. Work Perks : Now, this is a game-changer! In Canada, PhD students not only get paid during their studies (score!), but they can also hustle up to 10 hours a week. And guess what? After you complete your PhD, you get a shot at staying for up to 3 more years with a post-graduation work permit. Talk about levelling up your game!

3. Budget-Friendly Vibes : Let's be real – PhD adventures in countries like the US or the UK can put a dent in your wallet. But fear not, pursuing a PhD won't break the bank in Canada. Tuition fees range from a sweet CAD 6,000 to 30,000, making it a pocket-friendly option compared to some other academic hotspots. Adding to that, students can find a plater of PhD scholarships in Canada for international and domestic students.

If you’re keen to know more about why you should pursue a PhD, here are some great advantages of getting a PhD in 2024!

PhD Funding in Canada

Canada, being the second-largest country globally, flaunts its impressive size, including a lake bigger than Denmark, Scotland, and Switzerland. Now, let's connect the dots to PhD scholarships in Canada. Canada's vastness, split into provinces and territories, brings nuances to funding. Student loans, mainly for citizens or residents, play a role. With 10 provinces shaping their educational policies, funding options vary among universities. While international doctoral fees are often higher, some universities opt for fairness, charging the same for everyone. Notably, certain institutions establish a baseline funding standard, ensuring every PhD student receives minimum support. Explore our guide for a deeper dive into PhD scholarships in Canada!

10 generous Canada scholarships for international students worth up to CA$45,000

canada scholarships

Canada scholarships promise a fully or partially funded path to study, work and build a life in one of the most popular countries in the world.

Official data from the Canadian Bureau for International Education showed more than  800,000 international students had active student visas in 2022, up from 275,000 in 2012.

With its welcoming immigration policies and top-ranked universities, it’s little wonder Canada has become a popular study abroad destination.

It is so popular that there is now not enough decent, affordable accommodation for international students, with 25 students reportedly resorting to sleeping in tents on the side of the road .

In response, there is ongoing discussion to limit the number of international students allowed into Canada — the first of its kind.

Canadian Housing Minister Sean Fraser says this limit was “one of the options that we ought to consider,” BBC  reports.

Many universities rejected this idea swiftly, saying that tying international students to the country’s housing crisis is “deeply concerning.”

Canada targets to welcome 1.5 million new immigrants by 2025 — students are a key group it recognises for bringing “tremendous economic, cultural and social benefits” to the country.

By offering high-quality educational institutions and opportunities to work (for up to three years after graduation) or immigrate, it has attracted hundreds of thousands to the country, like Nakul and Nishul Juneja.

Being able to stay and work in Canada was a big factor for the identical twins, who pursued their MBA  at the University of Toronto Rotman’s School of Management after completing their bachelor’s degree at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Today, with a Canadian MBA in hand, Nakul is an Associate with McKinsey & Company and Nishul is a Senior Product Manager at Amazon.

Canada scholarships offer international students a clear path to similar success.

Tips to win scholarships from a winner of scholarships

canada scholarships

There are many Canada scholarships for students, if you know where to look. Source: Ryan Sutherland

Sutherland’s proven tips for scholarship triumph include:

  • Start early: Start extremely early if you want to get a competitive scholarship.
  • Know your deadlines: Sutherland always had an Excel document with all the deadlines. As he explains, some scholarship applications take up to 15 minutes, while he spends a longer time with other applications.
  • The more, the merrier: Think about your other “identities.” Some organisations like the United Nations offer scholarships or jobs if you’re working for one of those organisations. Some companies may say the benefit of working for them is getting a master’s degree for free.
  • Make your application unique, but don’t do twice the work: Try to make your application relevant to how your career has developed currently and relevant for the times. If there’s a political movement happening at the time or you’re involved in activism or public service relevant to a particular scholarship, mention these in your scholarship applications.

The objective of the Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s (CGS M) program is to help develop research skills and assist in the training of highly qualified personnel by supporting students who demonstrate a high standard of achievement in undergraduate and early graduate studies.

Description

The CGS M program provides financial support to high-calibre scholars who are engaged in an eligible master’s or, in some cases, doctoral program in Canada (refer to  Eligibility for more information). This support allows these scholars to fully concentrate on their studies in their chosen fields.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply, you must

  • be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada or a Protected Person under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada) as of the application deadline date
  • be enrolled in, have applied for or will apply for full-time admission * to an eligible graduate program at the master’s or doctoral level at a Canadian institution with a CGS M allocation
  • respect the internal deadline to apply for admission for your intended program of study—contact the faculty of graduate studies (or its equivalent) at the selected Canadian institution(s) for more detailed information
  • have completed, as of December 31 of the year of application
  • a master’s program
  • a doctoral program that you are entering directly from a bachelor’s program without having ever been enrolled in any graduate programs (direct-entry)

  • a master’s program that will transition to an eligible doctoral program, either before or after award activation, with no master’s degree conferred (fast-track)
  • a master’s program for which the degree requirements will be completed before the end of the award, allowing the award to continue into an eligible doctoral program
  • or between 4 and 12 months of full-time study (or full-time equivalent) in an eligible master’s program for which the degree requirements will be completed before activation of the award at that same institution, allowing it to be activated during the first 12 months of the subsequent doctoral program for which you are requesting funding
  • not have held or be currently holding a CGS M scholarship from NSERC, CIHR or SSHRC
  • not have held or be currently holding an Indigenous Scholars Award and Supplement
  • Note: Institutions may, at their discretion, accept CGS M applications from individuals who have not obtained a first-class average; contact your proposed host institutions to determine their use of this eligibility criterion
  • Note: Should more than one application be submitted, the eligible application submitted first chronologically will be retained

*Refer to the Tri-agency research training award holder’s guide for details regarding part-time admission. **All studies credited toward the eligible program will be counted, whether or not they were completed at the degree-granting institution. Two terms of part-time study count as one term of full-time study.

Program of study eligibility

An eligible graduate program must include a significant research component that leads to the completion of a thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, performance, recital and/or exhibit that is merit/expert-reviewed at the institutional level as a requirement for completion of the program.

Joint programs with a professional degree (for example, MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/MA, JD/PhD, MBA/PhD, MA/MBA) as well as clinically oriented programs of study , including clinical psychology, are eligible if they have a significant autonomous research component, as described above.

Master’s programs that are based only on course work are typically not eligible since they do not include a significant research component, as described above.

Given the specific requirements of certain disciplines, institutions are invited to contact the appropriate agency for guidance on the eligibility of programs of study.

Eligible locations of tenure

Without exception, CGS M awards are tenable only at eligible Canadian institutions .

Field of research and subject matter eligibility

NSERC, CIHR and SSHRC support and promote high-quality research in a wide variety of disciplines and areas, which are divided into broad fields of research (health, natural sciences and engineering, and social sciences and humanities). This includes research that bridges two or more disciplines or that requires the skills of several disciplines.

Equity, diversity and inclusion

The Tri-agency is acting on the evidence that achieving a more equitable, diverse and inclusive Canadian research enterprise is essential to creating the excellent, innovative and impactful research necessary to advance knowledge and understanding, and to respond to local, national and global challenges. This principle informs the commitments described in the Tri-agency statement on equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI).

Black student researchers

The Government of Canada has deployed additional funds to increase direct support for Black student researchers . CGS M applicants who self-identify as Black and provide consent in their application to be considered for funds designated for specific groups may be able to receive this funding through a scholarship as part of this initiative. Each agency has a limited number of additional CGS M awards reserved for this initiative.

For more information, consult the Frequently asked questions about the new Black scholars funding web page.

Application procedures

To apply to the CGS M program, you must complete and submit an application to up to three institutions using the Research Portal. Consult the Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s program: Instructions for completing an application for more information on how to apply.

Allocations

Eligible Canadian institutions are assigned a separate allocation of awards to offer from each agency. Institutions must respect the agency-specific allocation. Refer to the Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s award allocations page for a list of allocations by institution and by agency.

Note: As the application deadline approaches, delays may occur due to a high volume of users on the Research Portal, which may prevent the timely submission of your application. It is your responsibility to strictly follow the instructions for completing an application . Requests to submit late applications will not be accepted.

Selection process

The faculty of graduate studies (or its equivalent) at each institution is responsible for coordinating the selection process for the CGS M applications. Refer to Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s program information and instructions for scholarships liaison officers for more information on the selection process.

Selection criteria

The merit review of CGS M applications will be carried out by institutions with an allocation and will be based on the following evaluation criteria:

Canada Scholarships for International Students

Scholarships and Financial Aids

One of the most convenient methods of starting your studies in Canada is by winning a scholarship that covers your study and living expenses . Naturally, Canadian universities tend to offer scholarships to students with exceptional academic achievements. Nonetheless, chances of winning a Canadian scholarship also depend on work and volunteer experience. Scholarships as a kind of non-repayable financial help are quite limited and competitive.

International students can apply for Canadian scholarships by enrolling in undergraduate, master’s, doctoral, post-doctoral, and certificate programs. International scholarships from the Canadian government are provided in almost all academic fields. As a result, this Canada Government grant for overseas students is open to students from all regions. Luckily, Canadian institutions provide a variety of scholarships, the longest one can pay a student’s fees for up to four years.

Using social media or simply talking with peers who are also keen on finding a scholarship to further their academic career is a great way of tracking possible scholarships. 2 ASU honors students awarded Killam Fellowships for study in Canada

Sign that reads "Barrett, The Honors College" on a campus with students walking around it.

The Lorraine W. Frank Office of National Scholarships Advisement has announced that two students from Barrett, the Honors College at Arizona State University have been awarded Killam Fellowships for study at Canadian universities in the 2024–25 academic year.

Third-year astrophysics major Sarah Saavedra will attend the University of Toronto this fall and Taylor Oddonetto, a second-year finance major, will study at York University in Toronto in the spring of 2025.

Administered by Fulbright Canada, the Killam Fellowships Program provides the opportunity for exceptional undergraduate students from universities in Canada and the United States to spend either one semester or a full academic year as exchange students in each country.

Portrait of Sarah Saavedra.

The program provides $6,000 in funding per semester, and fellows also can apply for an additional $800 to pay for an educational field trip during their fellowship. Fellows also participate in a range of leadership development and ambassadorial activities, including an orientation in Canada’s capital Ottawa and a spring conference in Washington, D.C.

Nilanjana Bhattacharjya , a teaching professor and Honors Faculty Fellow in Barrett, worked closely with students through the application process. She said that the Killam Fellowship provides students the benefits of international experience at some of Canada’s finest universities.

“The universities and the locations of their campuses range from the Pacific Coast to Prince Edward Island, and metropolitan settings including Toronto and Montreal, and the varied array that each one offers has allowed our students to pursue and focus on interests they may have not yet had the chance to study in depth here at ASU — including exposure to oceanography and marine biology; First Nations perspectives and history; and comparative approaches to economic, environmental, social and political issues,” she said.

Killam Fellowship Information Session

4:30–5:30 p.m.

Barrett complex, Tempe campus

ASU’s role as a Killam exchange partner also has allowed students’ financial aid to transfer to cover their study abroad and make the Killam Fellowship a significant opportunity for ASU’s high-achieving students to represent the U.S. as part of the Fulbright mission to increase goodwill and understanding between the U.S. and other countries, Bhattacharjya added.

“I am deeply grateful for this opportunity and everyone who helped me get here. I am incredibly excited to experience Canada, meet new people and learn everything I can,” said Saavedra, who will continue her astrophysics studies in Canada.

Saavedra said a semester in Canada will expose her to various research topics and help her decide what type of graduate studies to pursue and where.

At York University, Oddonetto will study in the Liberal Arts & Professional Studies College and focus on international finance and Canadian politics.

“I feel honored to be part of a program such as the Killam Fellowship. The opportunity to represent my home institution, ASU, and my country is an enormous privilege,” said Oddonetto, who plans to work in wealth management in the future.

“Killam provides me the unique opportunity to experience a different culture and take on a new endeavor that will provide me with the skills I believe will be essential in any workplace,” she said.

Students who are interested in applying for nomination to the Killam Fellowships Program can attend an information session at 4:30–5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15, in Cottonwood Room 101 in the Barrett Honors College Tempe complex. Register for the information session here .
