How to create a family tree in microsoft powerpoint.
PowerPoint isn't just for business presentations. You can also impress your family by making your own custom family tree. Here's how.
A family tree is a hierarchical chart that details the connection between members of a family . You can create your own family tree in PowerPoint by using one of Microsoft's many hierarchy style SmartArt graphics. Here's how.
To get started, open PowerPoint and navigate to the "Insert" tab.
In the "Illustrations" group, click "SmartArt."
The "Choose a SmartArt Graphic" window will appear. In the left-hand pane, click the "Hierarchy" tab.
You'll now see a small collection of hierarchy SmartArt graphics. For standard family trees, the " Organizational Chart " option is ideal. However, you can choose whichever SmartArt graphic works best for you.
Select the chart you would like to use by clicking it.
Once selected, a preview and a description of the chart will appear in the right-hand pane. Click "OK" to insert the chart.
With the chart added to your presentation, you can start entering the names of the family members in each respective box. Do this by clicking the box and typing their name. The text will resize itself to fit the boxes automatically.
You can delete boxes you don't need by clicking the box to select it and then pressing the "Delete" key on your keyboard.
You can also add additional boxes below or above certain positions. To do this, highlight the box by clicking it.
Next, click the "Design" tab in the "SmartArt Tools" group.
In the "Create Graphic" group, click the arrow next to the "Add Shape" option.
A drop-down menu will appear. The option you select from the menu will depend on where you want to place the box with respect to the currently selected box. Here's what each option does:
- Add Shape After: Adds a box to the right, and on the same level, of the selected box.
- Add Shape Before: Adds a box to the left, and on the same level, of the selected box.
- Add Shape Above: Adds a box above the selected box.
- Add Shape Below: Adds a box below the selected box.
- Add Assistant: Adds a box between the level of the selected box and the level below.
In this example, assuming our fictional character Bryon had a child, we'd use the "Add Shape Below" option.
A box will now appear below our selected box.
Once the box is placed, enter the name of the respective family member. Repeat these steps until your family tree is complete.
You can also tweak the design or change the color of the chart. Click the chart to select it and then click the "Design" tab. In the "SmartArt Styles" group, you'll see a range of different styles to choose from, as well as the option to change colors.
Click the "Change Colors" option to show a drop-down menu, then select the color scheme you like best.
Next, choose a style you like from the lineup in the "SmartArt Styles" group. We'll use the "Inset" option.
Your chart will take on the selected color and style.
Play around with the styles and colors until you find one the works best for you.
Creating a family tree is an exciting thing, but it's always a collaborative effort. You can ask family members to collaborate on the presentation with you to ensure that no family members are left out. And remember to share the presentation with your family once the family tree is complete!

Q&A: Tips for viewing the 2024 solar eclipse

Previous image Next image
On Monday, April 8, the United States will experience a total solar eclipse — a rare astronomical event where the moon passes directly between the sun and the Earth, blocking out the sun’s light almost completely. The last total solar eclipse in the contiguous U.S. was in 2017, and the next one won’t be until 2044.
If the weather cooperates, people across the United States — from northeastern Maine to southwestern Texas — will be able to observe the eclipse using protective eyewear. Those in the path of totality , where the moon entirely covers the sun, will have the best view, but 99% of people in the continental U.S. will be able to see a partial eclipse. Weather permitting, those on the MIT campus and the surrounding area will see 93 percent of the sun covered, with the partial eclipse starting at 2:15 p.m. and reaching its peak around 3:29 p.m. Gatherings are planned at the Kresge Oval and the MIT Museum , and a live NASA stream will be shown in the Building 55 atrium .
Brian Mernoff , manager of the CommLab in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, is an accomplished astrophotographer and science educator. Mernoff is headed to Vermont with his family to experience the totality from the best possible angle — but has offered a few thoughts on how to enjoy the eclipse safely, wherever you are.
Q: What should viewers expect to see and experience with this solar eclipse?
A: When you’re watching TV (the sun) and your toddler, dog, or other large mammal (the moon) blocks your view, you no doubt move over a bit to try to get a partial or full view of the TV. This is exactly how the path of totality works for an eclipse. If you are exactly in line with the moon and sun, it will be completely blocked, but if you start moving away from this path, your view of the sun will start to increase until the moon is not in the way at all.
The closer you are to the path of totality, the more of the sun will be blocked. At MIT, about 93 percent of the sun will be blocked. Those in the area will notice that things around you will get slightly darker, just like when it starts to become overcast. Even so, the sun will remain very bright in the sky and solar glasses will be required to view the entirety of the eclipse. It really goes to show how incredibly bright the sun is!
Within the narrow path of totality, the moon will continue to move across the sun, reaching 100 percent coverage. For this short period of time, you can remove your glasses and see a black disk where the sun should be. Around the disk will be wispy white lines. This is the corona, the outermost part of the sun, which is normally outshone by the sun’s photosphere (surface). Around the edges of the black disk of the moon, right as totality begins and ends, you can also see bright spots around the edges, known as Bailey’s Beads, caused by sunlight shining between mountains and craters on the moon.
But that’s not all! Although you will be tempted to stare up at the sun throughout totality, do not forget to observe the world around you. During totality, it feels like twilight. There is a 360-degree sunset, the temperature changes rapidly, winds change, animals start making different sounds, and shadows start getting weird (look into “shadow bands” if you have a chance).
As soon as totality ends, and you start to see Baily’s Beads again, put your solar glasses back on as it will get very bright again very fast as the moon moves out of the way.
Q: What are the best options for viewing the eclipse safely and to greatest effect?
A: No matter where you are during the eclipse, make sure you have solar glasses. These glasses should be ISO-approved for solar viewing. Do not use glasses with scratches, holes, or other damage.
If you are unable to obtain solar glasses in time, you can safely view the eclipse using a home-made projection method , such as a pinhole camera or even projecting the image of the sun through a colander.
The best view of the eclipse will be from within the path of totality, but even if you are not within it, you should still go outside to experience the partial eclipse. Use the NASA Eclipse Explorer to find the start, maximum, and end times, and then find a nice spot outside — preferably with some shade — put on your glasses, and enjoy the show.
For a closer view of the sun, find a friend that has a telescope with the correct ISO-certified solar filter. This will let you see the photosphere (or chromosphere if it is an H-alpha scope) in a lot more detail. If you do not have access to a telescope, NASA plans to livestream a telescope view throughout the eclipse. [The livestream will be displayed publicly on a large screen in Building 55 at MIT, rain or shine.]
The only time you can look at or image the sun without a filter is during 100 percent totality. As soon as this period is done, glasses and filters must be put back on.
After the eclipse, keep your glasses and filters. You can use them to look at the sun on any day (it took me an embarrassing amount of time to realize that I could use the glasses at any time instead of lugging out a telescope). On a really clear day, you can sometimes see sunspots!
Q: How does eclipse photography work?
A: This year I plan to photograph the eclipse in two ways. The first is using a hydrogen-alpha telescope. This telescope filters out all light except for one wavelength that is given off by hydrogen. Because it blocks out most of the light from the sun’s surface, it allows you to see the turbulent upper atmosphere of the sun, including solar prominences that follow magnetic field lines.
Because this telescope does not allow for imaging during totality as too much light is blocked, I also plan to set up a regular camera with a wide-angle lens to capture the total eclipse with the surrounding environment as context. During the 2017 eclipse, I only captured close-ups of the sun using a regular solar filter and missed the opportunity to capture what was going on around me.
Will it work? That depends on if we get clear skies, and how many pictures of my 1.5-year-old need to be taken (as well as how much chasing needs to be done).
If you would like to take pictures of the eclipse, make sure you protect your camera sensor. The sun can easily damage lenses, sensors, and other components. Here are some examples of solar damaged cameras . The solution is simple, though. If using a camera phone, you can take pictures through an extra pair of solar glasses, or even tape them to the phone. For cameras with larger lenses, you can buy cardboard filters that slide over the front of your camera or even buy ISO-approved solar film and make your own.
Q: Any fun, unique, cool, or interesting science facts about this eclipse to share?
A: If you want to get even more involved with the eclipse, there are many citizen science projects that plan to collect as much data as possible throughout the eclipse.
NASA is planning to run several experiments during the eclipse , and researchers with MIT Haystack Observatory will also be using four different technologies to monitor changes in the upper atmosphere , both locally and across the continent.
If you are interested in learning more about the eclipse, here are two of my favorite videos, one on “ unexpected science from a 0.000001 megapixel home-made telescope ” and one on solar eclipse preparation .

Civil rights leader, part of Brown v. Board family, to speak at Drury University
Cheryl Brown Henderson, whose family was a pivotal figure in the Brown v. Board of Education case, will speak at Drury University's Stone Chapel.
The lecture at 11 a.m. Friday, April 5, is open to the public.
Henderson, founding president of the Brown Foundation for Educational Equity, which was started in Kansas, has made other trips to Springfield to visit Drury and Central High School.
She is the daughter of the Rev. Oliver Brown and the sister of Linda Brown, a family at the heart of a landmark civil rights battle to end the segregation of public schools.
Henderson will deliver a lecture about the significance and the legacy of the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision that declared segregation in public schools unconstitutional. The case challenged the “separate but equal” doctrine and advocated for students of all backgrounds to have an equal opportunity to learn.
The family has ties to Springfield. In the late 1950s, the Brown family relocated from Topeka to Springfield when the Rev. Brown became pastor of the Benton Avenue A.M.E. church.
Stone Chapel sits close to the Benton Avenue A.M.E. Church and Central High.
More: Civil rights icon Linda Brown, a 1961 Central graduate, dies in Topeka
Linda Brown enrolled in Central in 1959 and graduated in 1961. In 2000, Central dedicated a plaque in her memory. The bench has the following words etched: "May her courage be an inspiration to all."
Henderson, who has degrees from degrees from Baker University and Emporia State University, has expertise in education, business and civic leadership.
Her convocation is part of the Diversity and Reconciliation Undergraduate Conference, which starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. in F.W. Olin Library.

Governance in Family Businesses
In February, the Center for Family Business at Weatherhead School of Management hosted the presentation “Leading the Family, Working on the Future.” Patricia Angus, JD, founder of the Global Family Enterprise Program at Columbia Business School, was the keynote speaker.
She discussed the challenges and opportunities family businesses face across generations, emphasizing the need to evolve—in leadership, product offerings and governance—to successfully adapt to changing family dynamics and the external environment.
She also noted striking statistics that illustrate how adept family businesses are at survival because of values, loyalty and pride; risk tolerance; and long-term perspective. Looking to the future, Angus suggested that, instead of asking “How can I make the business last for several generations?” to ask “What is the purpose of the family business and what do I want its legacy to be?”
The Center for Family Business will host another event at Case Western Reserve’s Tinkham Veale University Center on Thursday, May 9. “Governance Systems—in the Business, for Owners and for the Family,” will feature presenter Leslie Dashew , who has combined her expertise in organizational development and family therapy to help family businesses chart their course for the future.
Governance in family businesses typically evolves during the life of the enterprise, and many variables can contribute to its effectiveness. Drawing on 40 years of experience, Dashew will share the “perils and pleasures” of governance, providing practical steps to build systems that will lead your family and business to success and longevity.
Family businesses are welcome to attend one program as our guest. Learn more about the event and register .

To the Editor:
Maine has an aging population, many of whom want to live out their lives at home. The extended family is a thing of the past. Care facilities are closing. The challenges for family caregivers can be overwhelming.
Preparing for inevitable death might be too much to handle for those living alone, and ‘there’s always tomorrow.’ But knowledge is power and to know the process beforehand could only be beneficial, especially at a time of great emotional stress.
Please join us for ‘Between the Final Breath and the Final Rest’, a presentation by funeral director Korey Mulherin, that will address the process and answer your questions, at the West Parish Congregational Church, 32 Church Street in Bethel, on Tuesday, April 16, from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Free to the public.

Somebody in Sin City must’ve whispered his name three times because Beetlejuice manifested on the Colosseum stage at Caesars Palace Tuesday afternoon.
During Warner Bros. Pictures’ CinemaCon presentation, Tim Burton and the stars of his upcoming Beetlejuice Beetlejuice turned up to rousing applause from the capacity crowd gathered for the annual National Association of Theater Owners convention. Burton walked out first and said getting his Beetlejuice family together again was like “a big weird family reunion.”

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice stars Ortega opposite Keaton, back as the grotesque ghost, with Ryder returning as Lydia Deetz, who is now a mother to Ortega’s character. O’Hara also returns with new additions Dafoe, Theroux and Bellucci rounding out the cast. The screenplay was written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar from a story by the pair with Seth Grahame-Smith.
The story picks up as the Deetz family has returned home to Winter River following an unexpected family tragedy. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia’s life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, played by Ortega, discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic, accidentally opening the portal to the afterlife. With trouble now in both realms, it’s only a matter of time until someone summons Beetlejuice, who returns to unleash his distinct brand of mayhem.
Keaton continued the thought and said he and Burton have kicked around the notion of a sequel many times over the years. “Finally it got right,” Keaton said, adding that it was a combination of timing and the quality of the script meeting a moment. “Frankly, I just followed his lead.” Then Keaton admitted that he’s seen the film twice already: “I have to tell you this though, it’s really fucking good.”
Though Ortega was absent, she received some shine from the stage as Burton said he was impressed that she went straight from Disney movies into the horror genre (like Scream ). Keaton said the young star also never had to be reminded of the tone or how to navigate the Beetlejuice world, “she just got it.”
The showing comes nearly three weeks after Warners debuted the first trailer for the film, a sequel to the 1988 original that starred Keaton opposite Winona Ryder, O’Hara, Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis. The clip has now been viewed north of 16 million times.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice arrives Sept. 6, after a very long road to the screen. Burton has long talked about tackling another installment, and it finally came together early last year with Ortega on board. The film further brings Ortega into Burton’s world, as she is the star of Wednesday , the blockbuster series for Netflix that he directed on and produced.
Beetlejuice also inspired the ensembles of Warner Bros. executives Jeff Goldstein and Andrew Cripps, who opened the studio’s presentation on Tuesday by stepping out on stage in black-and-white striped suits, black ties and electrified white wigs. (Last year, the pair donned suits in Barbie pink). “Good afterlife,” Goldstein said, with Cripps interjecting, “You mean, good afternoon.” Goldstein then asked the capacity crowd to decide who wore it better by a showing of applause. For the record: Goldstein won to which Cripps quipped, “They’re just shocked you have hair.” A burn so good there’s no doubt Beetlejuice would approve.

Roles and Functions of the Family P.F.D.-McCann
Each member of the family has special roles to play in the family such as parent, sibling, spouse. The behaviors of people in these roles vary from family to family.
Roles can be… • Inherited –some roles are inherited-like daughter because you are a girl, sibling because you are 2nd born • Assigned –parents can assign a role like babysitter to the oldest child • Chosen-some roles are chosen-like family cook
The family functions as an interactive unit. This unit provides for the physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual well-being of its members.
Procreation - the bearing of children • Parents have kids as an expression of their love for each other • They want to have someone carry on their heritage and traditions • The birth of children assure the continuation of society
Society and procreation • Children grow up and become adult that join the workforce • These young adults work and keep the economy going • They also have kids and the cycle repeats itself
Physical Care Families provide food, clothing, shelter, medical care and a safe environment for its members.
Society helps the family with physical needs Examples of help from society to the family are food stamps, public housing, Medicare/Medicaid, and charitable programs like the YMCA or local missions like HAAM
Socialization • The family teaches its children to conform to social standards. As parents socialize their children, they act as authority figures in the home teaching limits and appropriate behavior. • Education is also a part of socialization. Both moral and intellectual education are important for children.
Society helps the family As children grow and age, society provides educational resources: K-12 schools, colleges and universities, vocational and technical schools, and apprenticeships.
Emotional Support • The most critical function of families in today’s society is the emotional support of family members. • Parents provide and teach love, guidance, comfort, reassurance and forgiveness.
Society and Emotional Support • There are many agencies and individuals that provide information, care and support for family members. • Churches often provide counseling, Engagement and Marriage Encounter seminars, parenting classes • Therapist, Counselors, and Mental Health specialists also provide emotional assistance

Tax deadline approaches: Tips to file on time, obtain extensions and avoid IRS penalties
by JANAE BOWENS | The National Desk
WASHINGTON (TND) — Taxes are due in just a few days, and millions of Americans are expected to ask the IRS for an extension.
Filing taxes can be stressful. If you Google "most hated responsibilities," doing taxes is high on the list.
“One of those mistakes we see people make is that they just get scared so then they put it aside and say ‘no, I don’t want to deal with it at all,” which is about the worst thing you could do," explained Kathy Pickering, Chief Tax Officer for H&R Block, in an interview with CNN.
To file, you will need a W2, an official statement from your employer, which provides your official wage and tax statement. You might need a 1099 form if you are a business owner or have earned interest from investments. You will also need a 1098 form if you have mortgage or student loan interest.
It all can be very intimidating, but there is software like TurboTax. You can also go to a professional tax preparer in person.
If you owe and fail to file on time, the IRS will issue a five percent penalty for each month you are late. The penalty could be as much as 25% of your unpaid taxes.
You know Uncle Sam wants to get paid and they want to get paid April 15, and they're going to punish you if you don't," explained John W. Loyd, seasoned financial and tax advisor and the owner of The Wealth Planner in Texas.
You can get an extension to avoid some penalties. If approved, that will give you six more months to file with everything due on October 15, 2024. The extension has to be filed by Tax Day. You will have to pay any tax you owe by the April filing date.
“What they don't give you is six months of additional time to pay your tax," Loyd added. “There is interest that is going to accrue from April 15th.”
The failure to pay penalty is 0.5% of the unpaid taxes for each month or part of a month the tax remains unpaid. The penalty won’t exceed 25% of your unpaid taxes, per the IRS.
To request an extension , you must file electronically or by mail a 4868 form. You can also pay all or part of your estimated income tax due and indicate the payment is for an extension.
For people getting money back, there are a few bright spots to look forward to.
The fastest way to get your refund is to electronically file and to receive that refund through a direct deposit," explained Pickering.
The average refund is $3,050, about 5% more than last year.
