Later, when we saw the environment deteriorating, we were introduced to “afforestation,” a simple process of planting more trees for a better future.

Trees are essentially human and other living organisms' livestock. They have unconditionally provided us with food, oxygen, and a variety of other necessities for human survival, such as shelter, medicines, tools, and so on.

Despite their rich values and importance, trees are still not properly cared for. They are cut down, eradicating all forms of life in the surrounding area.

However, the relevance and importance of planting trees have only grown with each passing day. More trees must be planted as a collective effort by all of humanity to save our ailing planet.

As a result, we have our global Tree Plantation Day, which is observed on March 21st all over the world. The purpose of observing the said day is to make people aware of the importance of planting trees and to assist them in doing so. Planting saplings to invest in the future is a common practice on tree plantation days.

Deforestation has resulted in devastating floods and landslides. The significance of "tree plantation" can also be emphasised for forest conservation and wildlife protection. Wild animals are facing a scarcity of inhabitable forest areas as lands are cleared for farming and industrial purposes.

The Indian government is allocating funds through the Compensatory afforestation fund management and planning account (CAMPA) to carry out such massive “tree plantation” campaigns in both urban and rural areas. State governments are also taking extensive measures to improve forest and tree coverage. The Maharashtra government entered the coveted Limca Book of Records by conducting a massive "tree plantation" with the help of citizens and various Non-Governmental Organizations, planting 2.82 crore trees in a single day.

Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) in India are taking proactive steps to encourage ordinary people to participate in “tree plantation” programmes and to raise awareness about the importance of tree plantation in combating climate change. Green Yatra, a Maharashtra-based organisation founded by Mr Pradeep Tripathi, has launched a programme called ‘Go Green Kids,' which provides free saplings to schools in both rural and urban areas of the state.

The Sankalp Taru organisation established a programme in a school in Barmer, Thar Desert, in 2013 to educate students and surrounding communities about the importance of "tree plantation." The organisation makes routine visits to ensure the health of the trees and provides irrigation and water to underserved areas. SayTrees is a Bengaluru-based organisation founded by individuals dedicated to preserving nature's ecological balance.

Trees provide the oxygen that all living organisms need to breathe. They reduce the amount of water runoff in sloping areas, in turn reducing soil erosion and helping in preventing the pollution of water bodies.

Wisely planting trees can also benefit our houses. For example, trees on the northern side act as a windbreak for cold wind during winter.

Disadvantages Of Tree Plantation

Planting the wrong varieties of trees can wipe out locally endangered species as they fight for resources. They can often reduce the biodiversity of birds and bugs in the area.

Tree planting initiatives focus on planting as many trees as possible. As a result, they tend to plant hardy trees that grow fast and don't require much maintenance. When you plant trees indiscriminately, they will reduce the amount of water that flows in rivers and streams. Hence, trees should be planted by taking care of the available natural resources of an area.

The only way to tackle rapid deforestation is to plant more trees. Yet the meaning of something so simple is lost on many of us. Deforestation, pollution, climate change, and humans becoming careless are wreaking havoc on the environment, and it's high time for more. More people and governments need to act together to change barren land into a beautiful forest.

Planting trees helps fight climate change—but we need billions more seedlings

The U.S. must more than double the production of seedlings to meet reforestation goals, researchers say.

Planting trees has quickly emerged as a seemingly simple way to soak up carbon emissions. Everybody likes it: Environmentalists, politicians, and corporations alike are pushing for a rapid expansion of reforestation efforts to help meet climate goals.

This means growing trees— and lots of them —with the expectation that they’ll capture and store carbon dioxide and help prevent it from warming the world beyond the Paris Agreement target of 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit (2 degrees Celsius) above pre-industrial temperatures.

But according to a new study in the journal Frontiers in Forests and Global Change , there aren’t enough tree seedlings currently being grown, at least in the United States, to keep up with those goals. If reforestation efforts are to help tackle climate change, the study finds, tree nurseries across the U.S. will have to increase their production to at least three billion seedlings per year— more than double current levels.  

This needs to happen “sooner than later,” said the study’s lead author, Joe Fargione, science director for The Nature Conservancy's North America Region. “You can’t plant a tree until you grow it. And you can't grow it in the nursery until you have the seed.”

In order to better understand how to increase national tree production levels, Fargione and over a dozen other researchers surveyed 181 federal, state, and private nurseries and foresters last year, representing at least half of all seedling production in the U.S.

The results, released last month, show that the nation’s nurseries are currently producing 1.3 billion seedlings per year, which are mostly going to replace existing trees harvested by timber companies or lost to wildfires. To expand U.S. forests onto an additional 64 million acres identified by the study as ripe for reforestation—and carbon storage—would take another 1.7 billion seedlings a year. That brings the total needed from nurseries to three billion a year, more than a 130 percent increase.  

Ramping up seedling production that much, and making sure they live long enough to trap enough carbon emissions, will cost tens of billions of dollars, according to the study. It will require training specialized seed collectors and investing in new infrastructure, as well as bolstering long-term monitoring to ensure forests survive in the face of pests, disease, drought, and wildfires—threats that are all on the rise because of climate change.

Pressure to regrow and protect forests is at an all-time high. Last August, over two dozen local governments, companies, and nonprofits across the U.S. committed to the World Economic Forum’s initiative to globally plant a trillion trees by 2030. Last October, then-President Donald Trump signed an executive order committing the U.S. to that same goal. With such bipartisan support, some environmental nonprofits are hopeful the Biden administration will build on this initiative.

Beyond individual corporate or local goals, growing trees can contribute something to national climate targets. The land sector—which includes everything from tree planting and avoiding deforestation to increasing the amount of carbon stored in soils—accounted for a small portion of the U.S. Obama-era commitment to reduce emissions by up to 28 percent under the Paris Agreement. According to one estimate, if all 64 million acres identified in the study were reforested, that would represent roughly 7.5 percent of the emission reductions needed to meet the nation’s Paris Agreement commitments.

The current rate of reforestation, however, can’t even keep up with the amount of land that has been burned by devastating wildfires across the American West in recent years. Climate change is only expected to make wildfires more intense, which will increase that backlog.

“We’re just now recognizing the increasing backlog of areas that need to be planted that aren't being met yet,” said seed ecologist and study co-author Olga Kildisheva, a project manager at The Nature Conservancy.

Planting more trees to offset carbon emissions will further increase demand for seedlings. The good news, said Fargione, is that only a third of public and private nurseries surveyed are currently operating at full capacity. That means there’s a big opportunity to expand.

Seedling production peaked over 30 years ago. In the late 1980s, more than 2.6 billion seedlings were produced each year in the U.S. Once the 2008 recession shuttered many nurseries across the country, that number dropped to less than one billion. “Imagine losing 75 percent of your capacity,” said Dan Rider, associate director of the Maryland Forest Service, of the impact that the recession and other factors have had on the state’s John S. Ayton forest tree nursery. “Our story's not unique.”

  It’s going to take a lot of work to scale back up, said Eric Sprague, vice president of reforestation at American Forests, a conservation organization that helped spearhead the new study as well as the trillion-trees initiative. But doing so, he says, is “going to be a huge part” of whether or not the U.S. achieves its reforestation goals.

“It’s not just about expanding and improving what we have,” Sprague said, “but actually adding new nurseries to meet this goal.”

If all nurseries, both public and private, operated at maximum capacity, the study estimates an additional 400 million more seedlings could be grown each year. Researchers also expect a further 1.1 billion seedlings could be produced annually if the majority of nurseries expanded beyond their current capacity, which most surveyed in the study said they’d be willing to do. Add all of this to the 1.3 billion currently being grown, and production would be nearly at the three billion per year minimum that the study recommends.

Turning up the volume

Boosting seedling production and planting them means increasing support and investment across the entire process. As the study found, there has been “chronic under-investment” in specialized labor, infrastructure, and training. “Workforce challenges,” said Sprague, “are the number one barrier to scaling up.”

Seed collectors need to understand everything from predicting when certain species will release their seeds—making them available to gather—to how to safely clean seeds. Staff then need to be trained on how to test the seeds’ quality and store them so they stay viable over the years. “It's a perishable product; it needs to be treated carefully,” said study co-author Greg Edge, a forest ecologist with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources’ Forestry Division. Yet the number of people specializing in this work continues to dwindle.

Nurseries, meanwhile, rely only on a handful of year-round staff; the rest are seasonal workers who help with sowing, harvesting, sorting, and packing. It can be difficult to attract these workers, though, due to the remote locations of many nurseries, as well as competition from other agriculture jobs. Immigration policies can also affect the number of available workers, the study noted.

Not only are seeds and labor in short supply, but the infrastructure is old, said Charles Eckman, horticulturist at the federal J.W. Toumey Nursery in Michigan. And while adding or improving greenhouses can be a great way to expand capacity and grow seedlings more quickly than in the field, he said, it has to be planned years ahead of when the seedlings are needed.  

The upfront financial cost for nurseries can be a big risk. “We're trying to predict today, like literally right now, ‘Well, what's the market going to look like in two years?’” said Rider in Maryland. “In the nursery business you have to spend all of your money today, for site prep, fertilizer, and everything else that goes into the ground … and you won’t get that money back for two years.”

Planning for survival

A tree-planting campaign with stable, long-term funding—whether federal or private—could provide nurseries the certainty they need to ramp up production, experts agreed.

The Frontier study is based on the assumption that planting trees is the main way to meet reforestation goals, said Karen Holl, professor of environmental studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz, who wasn’t involved in the study. Protecting existing forests, as well as encouraging natural regeneration, shouldn't be forgotten, she said.

And even a tree-planting campaign can be doomed by a “misplaced emphasis on how many trees are planted rather than how many survive,” the study warned. It calls for developing guidelines on what seeds will thrive in different environments, especially as climate change shifts plant species to new regions.

“It's not just about planting a tree. It needs to be done thoughtfully and well, because you can't just stick a tree in the ground and come back in 100 years and have a forest,” said Edge. It takes an immense amount of money, labor, and patience to turn a seed into a sapling. “We don't want to just waste our time sticking a seedling in the ground that'll die.”

6 Ways Trees Benefit All of Us

From a city park to a vast forest, trees deliver for us when we help them thrive.

Trees have been with us throughout our whole lives. They’re the background of a favorite memory and that welcome patch of green our eyes seek as we gaze out our windows—an activity we’re doing a lot these days.

While they are silent and stationary, trees hold tremendous powers, including the power to make all our lives better and healthier.

If a tree has power, a forest has even more. What superpowers do trees have?

#1: Trees eat the greenhouse gases that cause climate change—for breakfast.

More like breakfast, lunch and dinner. Trees’ food-making process, photosynthesis, involves absorbing carbon dioxide from the air and storing it in its wood. Trees and plants will store this carbon dioxide throughout their lives, helping slow the gas’s buildup in our atmosphere that has been rapidly warming our planet.

Smarter management of trees, plants and soil in the US alone could store the equivalent carbon of taking 57 million cars off the road ! Trees are looking out for us so we have to look out for them. Older, larger trees store a lot more carbon than young trees, so it’s important that in addition to planting new trees, we conserve and protect the giants of our forests like these ancient trees in South Carolina .

#2: Trees boost our mental health while raising our physical health.

A healthy tree can lead to a healthy you and me. A study by a TNC scientist shows that time in nature—like a walk among the trees in a city park—correlates with a drop in anxiety and depression.

The good news: it doesn’t take a lot of time in nature for these soothing powers to kick in. You may have felt the benefits from a short walk or hike in your neighborhood. We’re drawn to green spaces, and for good reason.

Access to nearby green space also contributes to better physical health by encouraging us to move around and exercise. Because we move around more when we have access to trees and parks, nature can help lower rates of obesity.

#3: Trees clean the air so we can breathe more easily.

Leave it to leaves. Trees remove the kind of air pollution that is most dangerous to our lungs: particulate matter. This pollution arises from the burning of fossil fuels, and can reach dangerous concentrations in the largest cities as well as in neighborhoods near highways and factories .

Your Dollars at Work

TNC is in the middle of the first controlled experiment testing neighborhood tree planting for health benefits  in the same way that a new pharmaceutical drug would be tested.

Tree’s leaves will filter this dangerous pollution, but only if they’re planted near the people who need them; most of the filtration occurs within 100 feet of a tree. More trees in cities, especially in lower-income neighborhoods close to highways and factories, can reduce ailments like asthma and heart disease that cause 5% of deaths worldwide.

#4: Trees give a home to the wildlife we love.

From our windows, many of us can see how much our feathered and furry neighbors enjoy their ‘high-rise apartments.’ Even a single tree can provide vital habitat for countless species.

An intact forest can do even more, creating a home for some of the most diverse and resilient webs of life on the planet. Old-growth forests, the forests that we need to protect most urgently, create habitat at the ground level, at the top of their tree canopies, and everywhere in between. All of these different types of habitat in a single area allow so many diverse species to thrive .

#5: Trees cool down your life, and could even save it.

Trees give us all shade—and that’s a good thing! Temperatures are rising and heatwaves are getting longer due to climate change. Some places feel the heat more than others. Neighborhoods with lots of pavement absorb more heat and can be five to eight degrees hotter than surrounding areas. These areas also stay hotter later into the night, which is detrimental to our health.

Enter our branchy, leafy neighbors. A tree’s shade acts like a natural air conditioning and can even keep down the energy costs of our actual air conditioning systems, which are increasingly working overtime.

#6: Trees filter your water, making your drinking supply cleaner and more reliable.

Raise a glass to a tree near you! Actually, raise your glass to trees far from you, as your water has traveled on a long journey to your faucet. Trees store and filter more than half of the water supply in the United States.

Forests do this by removing pollutants and sediments from rainfall and then slowly releasing the water back into waterways and underground aquifers. Thanks to trees, this naturally cleaner water is easier and cheaper to treat before it ends up in your tap . The water supply is also steadier because all of the rainwater didn’t end up in a river right away; it seeped through these natural filters over time.

To fully use their powers, trees need our help.

While trees are resilient, they are not invincible—and they need our help. Still much more plantation can be done. There are a lot of areas which is suffering from early fall. This can only be done by the local people.

The organization named Green Yatra founded by Mr. Pradeep Tripathi in Maharashtra has undertaken a program called ‘Go Green Kids,’ and provide free saplings to schools, in rural and urban parts of the state.

The students then look after the saplings which enhances the spirit of “tree plantation” throughout the community. The Green Yatra organization is planning to expand its operations to schools across India. They have planted 30000 trees across Maharashtra schools. The Project Green Hand founded by the Isha Foundation in Tamil Nadu gives the school kids 2000 seeds for “tree plantation”, educates them through peer-to-peer education and students cultivate mini forest in the school premises.

In 2013 the Sankalp Taru organization founded a program in the school in Barmer, Thar Desert to educate students and nearby communities on the importance of “tree plantation”. The organization conducts routine visits to ensure that the trees are healthy, and provide irrigation and water to the deprived areas. SayTrees is a Bengaluru based organization formed by committed individuals to protecting the ecological balance of nature.

The “tree plantation” by SayTrees is done by a unique method known as the Miyawaki technique. This technique allows various varieties of the plants to grow faster. The “tree plantation” program by SayTress is done by planting only native plant saplings like peepal, banyan, and mango.

The ecological system of our planet is a shared responsibility of all the citizens. The “importance of tree plantation” is emerging as we see the deteriorating condition of the forests and the ecosystem. The Indian Government and various NGOs are striving to bring awareness on climate change and various environmental problems. The movement was eventually successful as the Maharaja agrees to stop the felling of the trees.

These Northeastern graduates are improving our neighborhoods one tree at a time

The drive to plant and care for trees in urban areas has never been more important. And the Northeastern community is doing its part in Greater Boston.

Cathy Griffin wasn’t always a tree lover.

“I hated trees,” she says of her former life in Acton, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston. 

Tom, her husband, didn’t exactly enjoy raking leaves. He and Cathy were fed up with paying to have trees removed from their property.

Their perspective changed in 2019 when they decided to move into the city. As they walked around their new neighborhood, it occurred to them that something was missing.

“During COVID, I was working a million hours,” she says of the isolated lifestyle created by the pandemic. “I was looking out the window and I realized, ‘Oh my gosh, it really does improve mental health’ — you look at a tree, you hear the birds. It really helps.”Dovetailing with that revelation were Northeastern Global News stories, including one about the drought of 2022 . As proud Northeastern graduates, it occurred to Cathy and Tom that something had to build the tree population in their urban neighborhood — and that they should be the ones to do it.

They started WE Tree Boston , a nonprofit devoted to tree education, planting and maintenance in the West End of Boston not far from TD Garden. Over the past two years the Griffins and their team of volunteers have planted 19 trees and 35 seedlings with the guidance and support of Northeastern’s arborist, Stephen Schneider .

The drive to plant and care for trees in urban areas has never been more important. A single tree is capable of absorbing upwards of one ton of carbon dioxide. Trees cool the air, increase property values and may help reduce crime rates, according to a Baltimore study that linked a proliferation of trees with a decrease in crime.

As WE Tree Boston prepares for Earth Day (on April 22) and Arbor Day (April 26)  — a national day of tree planting — Cathy Griffin has a sense that her newfound love of trees was meant to be, based on her Northeastern affiliation. 

“I think it’s amazing that there are so many groups at Northeastern that are helping,” she says.

A list of like-minded people in Griffin’s orbit begins with Kate England , the Northeastern graduate who in 2022 was named as the city of Boston’s first director of green infrastructure; Nora Masler, a Northeastern graduate student who is serving as assistant planner in (ironically) Acton, the Griffins’ former home; and Bill Masterson, a Northeastern graduate who founded Tree Eastie , a nonprofit that is transforming the environment of East Boston, which serves as home to Logan International Airport.

“I’ve always liked gardening,” says Masterson, who studied finance at Northeastern. “I enjoy being outdoors, but I don’t have any type of background at all around horticulture.”

This is how a movement starts: The seeds of a good idea sprout into something larger. 

‘It’s a health issue’

Like the Griffins, Masterson and his wife moved from a suburb into the city five years ago. He had retired after three versatile decades with Gillette, where he worked in accounting, marketing, sales, business development and integration after the company was bought by Proctor & Gamble. 

He was looking for something to do in East Boston.

“I just didn’t see many trees at all,” Masterson says. “The more I looked into it and talked to people, I found out that East Boston has the lowest tree canopy in the city at 7%.”

That canopy — the percentage of a city that is shaded by trees — can be assessed using satellite imagery as well as LiDAR (light detection and ranging), an instrument made up of a laser, scanner and GPS receiver. Planes or helicopters are used to map out broad areas using lidar technology. 

Masterson says an “appropriate” tree canopy for U.S. cities is 30%. 

“The city of Boston has an average of 27%,” he says. “So in Eastie we’re well below the average. We’re an environmental justice community, marginalized with a heavy immigrant population. So there are a lot of good reasons why we should be planting more trees.”

East Boston’s need for trees is especially obvious on hot summer days.

“They take snapshots to see what the daytime temperature is in various parts of Boston, and almost the entire neighborhood of East Boston is one big hot spot,” Masterson says. “On the map it shows bright red, which means that the daytime temperatures in the summer are much higher on average than other parts of Boston.

“These heat islands are caused by not having any shade on the asphalt and so the asphalt heats up. You can imagine if you’re standing on asphalt versus in a park, you’re going to be a lot warmer on the black asphalt. It’s a health issue — the heat’s not good and the sun rays are not good.”

Tree Eastie planted its first tree in October 2021 after signing an agreement with the city. 

“They just don’t let anybody go out and plant trees on sidewalks,” says Masterson, who has received support from Schneider. “So it took a little bit of convincing that we knew what we were doing and that we were funded and that we could do what we promised that we would do. And ever since then we’ve had a great relationship with the city. We really rely on them and they rely on us. It’s a good partnership.”

Tree Eastie numbers more than 300 volunteers who are led by a core group of 30 to 40 that Masterson counts on. They’ve planted more than 300 trees while filling almost every vacant tree well in East Boston.

“I identify where we’re going to be planting trees and volunteers sign up to help with the tree planting,” Masterson says. “That usually involves digging a hole that’s two and a half feet by two and a half feet by two and a half feet — because it has to be a good-sized three, especially if it’s a street tree. And then we’re on the hook for watering that tree. Any tree that we plant on city property, they want us to take care of it.

“There’s appreciation for the work that we’re doing because people know that trees are a good thing. Every year it seems like people are more and more attuned to the value and benefits that trees provide. It wasn’t always that way.”

Arbor Day plans

The Griffins are walking along Thoreau Path in the West End, pointing out the young trees they and their fellow volunteers have planted and are caring for — a sweet bay magnolia, a pink weeping cherry, a Japanese maple and others. Cathy Griffin is seeking Community Preservation Act funding that will allow her group to plant bigger trees (which are more likely to survive) and care for the 250 mature neighborhood trees that need watering and care.

Along the way they run into a couple of WE Tree Boston supporters — a local optometrist and the pastor of a local church.

“Dogs pee on trees and that kills [young] trees, rabbits eat the trees — I didn’t realize it’s hard to keep them alive,” Griffin says. “Trees need at least 15 gallons of water once a week, if not three times a week.”

The neighborhood lacks outdoor spigots, which means WE Tree Boston volunteers must lug the water from tree to tree.

One problem the Griffins have noted is that developers, property owners and residents are not incentivized to keep and maintain trees. But that may be changing with the new public tree protection ordinance that was signed in January by Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, which establishes regulations to preserve trees on city-owned property.

“It’s a really big step,” says Masler. “Aside from the direct benefits in terms of the trees that it will protect, it’s also going to increase the communication and understanding across city departments — setting up a process for the protection of trees.”

As an urban planning and policy graduate student at Northeastern, Masler’s research has shown that individual homeowners are responsible for significant losses of trees in urban areas. Masler hopes that a second tree ordinance — this one protecting trees on private property — may be on the horizon for Boston.

England, the Northeastern graduate who oversees environmental matters for Wu, has played an important role in these efforts.

The Griffins say the community is behind their efforts. And they feel the momentum building as progress is made. Griffin’s employer, dentsu, will be visiting in June to donate and plant five trees (in addition to the 10 that the company has already introduced to the neighborhood). In all, 15 new trees will be planted this spring.

On Arbor Day, Schneider will visit the West End to plant a second tree that has been donated by Northeastern. 

“Stephen has been my biggest supporter — dedicating endless hours to helping me get arboretum status, consulting with me on new plantings, educating me on how to care for our trees,” Griffin says. “And we are so grateful for the support from so many others from Northeastern.”

Schneider’s team of co-ops will tag the neighborhood trees as a key part of Griffin’s goal to earn arboretum status. And a creative “deep watering solution” will be installed by Northeastern mechanical engineering students Alia Bent, Isabella Guzman, Max Moeller, Blair Seo and Megan Severs, who designed it for WE Tree Boston as their capstone project. 

All of these efforts encourage residents to take a sense of ownership of their neighborhood as they work together to make it greener, healthier and more beautiful.

“We’re here to stay,” Griffin says. “And we’re going to make a difference.”

Plant These 9 Native Trees To Help Wildlife

Oak trees are a keystone species across the country, collectively supporting nearly 500 species of caterpillars. Their acorns also feed deer, rabbits, birds, squirrels and foxes. Some oaks even support bats.

"Oaks are rich in history due to their stature, quality hardwood and benefits to wildlife," says Glassey. "Some feel worried these giants will fall [down], but just remember to give them proper soil conditions , nutrients and water."

You'll need a big yard to plant most oaks, of course, and there are a lot to choose from. Out of the more than 50 native to the U.S., keystone species by region include: white and black oaks for northern forests; bur oak, post oak and blackjack oak for the Great Plains; and Gambel and scrub oak for North American deserts.

Most oaks prefer well-draining sunny locations and benefit from regular watering and minimal pruning.

Willow Trees

Willow roots slow water flow, helping control flooding, while their big, bushy bodies provide habitat for birds and other wildlife.

More than 300 species of caterpillars use willow leaves for food, so planting one means an abundance of butterflies and moths , including tiger swallowtails, mourning cloaks and sylvan hairstreaks. Willow flowers are also food for bumblebees and other insects. "Some people feel they are messy, but the immense benefits to wildlife outweigh the mess to me," says Glassey.

Willows are native to much of the country, and species range from trees to shrubs. It's important to plant one that is native to your area, especially if you're in a dry region, because they use a lot of water. Most willows prefer sunny, moist to wet soil. Don't plant them near your house or other structures because their root systems can be invasive .

Pines provide food for caterpillars, nesting space for crows and hawks and nesting material for other birds and small mammals. Some birds have even adapted to retrieve pine seeds from within the cones, like nuthatches and crossbills.

They're also great carbon sinks, absorbing large amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while helping with soil stability and nutrient cycling.

Pines are native to much of the country but choose one native to your particular area. In the Northern forests, try pitch pine, Eastern white pine and Virginia pine, all top keystone species. In the West, lodgepoles and ponderosas are good choices because they're more resistant to wildfire . In hurricane-prone regions, longleaf pine offers more wind resistance than other species.

Pines like sunlight and well-draining soil. Water deeply when young, Ali says. Also mulch, protect from strong winds and selectively prune and monitor for pests, diseases and signs of stress.

Maple Trees

While the large maples in the Eastern U.S. are most celebrated for their fall foliage , a range of smaller maples are native to the West.

Wherever you live, they're sure to lure caterpillars and other insects that, in turn, attract insect-loving birds like kinglets and warblers, says Pantin. Their nectar-rich flowers are great for pollinators . Owls, woodpeckers, warblers and tanagers nest in their cavities. Maples also attract deer, moose, squirrels and porcupines.

In the East, from Missouri to Maine, native sugar maples are known for their fall colors. In the Great Plains, silver maples are a keystone species. And in the West and Northwest, bigleaf and Rocky Mountain maples are good bets.

Maples prefer full-to-part sun and dry to moist soil. Ali says mulch around the base, water regularly during establishment and dry spells, prune selectively to remove dead or diseased branches and monitor for pests.

Crabapple Trees

Crabapples are good for medium to smaller yards because their roots aren't too invasive and the trees only grow 10 to 20 feet tall.

Their pink springtime blooms make humans cheery while also supporting bees, butterflies and other pollinators. Crabapple trees also provide nesting space and shelter for birds and small animals, and their fruit is a good food source for birds.

Some crabapple species came from Europe, but at least three are native, keystone species: sweet crabapple in the Northern forests; prairie crabapple in the Great Plains; and Oregon crabapple in the Northwest. But even if you have a non-native crabapple, it's still a worthy habitat.

Plant crabapple in sunny locations with well-draining soil, and provide regular watering during their establishment period, says Ali.

Alder Trees

If you live in wet woodlands or along a canal or riverbank, alder trees and shrubs create excellent habitat. Their seeds attract songbirds, and their abundance of insects and caterpillars great for bluebirds and chickadees. Moose, deer, rabbits and muskrats thrive in alder thickets.

"These trees also provide shelter to fish and food for invertebrates, which in turn are a great food source for salmon and brown trout," says Glassey. "The wood of a common alder does not rot!"

Various species of native alders abound from Texas into the middle and Northern states, from near sea level up to 10,000 feet. Depending on the species, sizes can range from tall trees to shrubs. Most prefer full sun to part shade. Plant one native to your region and steer clear of European black alder, which can be invasive in places.

Serviceberry Trees

Serviceberries are good for medium-sized yards. They can grow to 30 feet, but more often end up as multi-stemmed shrubs half that size. Their early-spring blooms are great for bees, plus they're a host plant for swallowtail and other butterflies.

Their berries bring dozens of bird species, from cedar waxwings to cardinals and mockingbirds. The fruits, edible for humans, are often used in jams and pies.

Serviceberries grow in much of the U.S., with native species and their sun and shade needs varying by region. The downy serviceberry occupies a wide range from Florida to Maine, whereas the Saskatoon serviceberry thrives in the dry foothills of the Rocky Mountains.

Dogwood Trees

While we marvel at dogwoods for their spring flowers (actually modified leaves called bracts), wildlife particularly appreciates their berry-like fruit. Deer , squirrels, rabbits and dozens of bird species depend on calcium and fat from dogwood berries to survive the winter.

Flowering dogwoods are native from southern Maine thorough eastern Texas and parts of the Midwest. Pacific dogwoods are native to the Northwest through Southern California.

In the forest, wild dogwoods often grow in the understory, below the main canopy of hardwood forests. But in your yard, plant in direct or near-direct sunlight to protect them from dogwood anthracnose disease.

Native Shrubs

Don't forget the shrubs ! Not everything has to be as noble as a tree to be vastly useful to wildlife.

Native shrubs are great for yards of any size. Their dense thickets provide shelter for birds and small mammals, and their leaves, seeds, flowers and berries are good food for birds, insects and other animals.

Local organizations fight to plant and preserve urban trees on arbor day.

The outcry stemmed from most of the uprooted trees being more than 50 years old and cherished for their significant benefits, Holden said.

The removals led some neighbors to band together with the historical society and local organizations to document “historic” trees in the area in an effort to stop them from being uprooted.

“We’ve found many trees that are 100 years old or more,” Holden said. “All of these trees have a natural life cycle, and they have decades more of viable life. We’re just hoping we can encourage a more thoughtful process.”

Edgewater’s initiative is one of many around Chicago to preserve or plant trees on this year’s Arbor Day. Established in 1872, the holiday intended to advocate for the planting of trees around the world, was launched by the father of Morton Arboretum’s founder, J. Sterling Morton.

Zach Wirtz, the arboretum’s director of its trees initiative, said the tree-focused botanical garden’s aims remain unchanged. “Our main goal is to increase the capacity of trees across the region, and help folks understand the importance of trees, as well as how to better take care of them so that we can enjoy more benefits from our urban forest,” Wirtz said.

Wirtz said trees were essential to urban populations such as Chicago, where asphalt and paved surfaces can create  “heat islands,” which can cause dangerous health effects in areas where shade trees are not available.

Trees can also help with intercepting stormwater, according to Wirtz. Without mature trees, the risk of flooding and contaminated drinking water is increased. Preventing those things is something most communities can agree on, Wirtz added.

“When we’re working with a community-based organization, it’s not only a great way to plant trees, it’s a great way to bring the community together to build up the social cohesion in those areas, and produce a community good everyone benefits from.”

Michael Dugan, director of forestry at Openlands, a nonprofit that aims to increase access to nature across the city, said getting communities excited about and engaged in tree planting is a core part of his work.

Openlands assisted in the Edgewater community’s initiative to document and preserve trees and has numerous other programs that encourage tree planting across the Chicagoland area. One of them, a community tree-planting grant, connects Openlands with people who want to see more trees in their neighborhoods, Dugan said

“It really is a partnership because residents are planting trees with their neighbors, learning about how to care for trees and the importance of a healthy urban forest,” Dugan said. “That’s so important.”

Equity, Dugan added, is a key part of efforts to plant trees throughout the Chicago area, where lower-income neighborhoods tend to see fewer trees planted. Neighborhoods with healthy tree canopies see students with higher test scores and lower rates of attention deficit disorder, Dugan said.

A 2022 investigation by the Chicago Tribune found that the city had planted more trees in wealthy, whiter neighborhoods in the past decade, increasing those disparities. Dugan said that Openlands aims to improve that gap with programs like its grant.

“We know that in Chicago and across other major cities, trees are generally not distributed equally or equitably across our cities and our landscapes,” Dugan said. “Having a healthy urban forest is a benefit economically, socially, environmentally and civically. When residents make an investment in a healthy urban forest, they’re investing in themselves and the places that they live.”

While tree planting is important, Wirtz said the focus should be on preserving tree canopies.  Learning how to properly care for trees in the city and fighting to preserve them should be prioritized this Arbor Day, he said.

“We can plant lots of trees, but if we’re removing a lot of trees at the same time, we can end up basically staying in the same space,” Wirtz said. “So we want to make sure that we’re encouraging communities to look at how they can preserve existing mature canopies and really help make sure that those trees are healthy and providing the most benefit possible.”

Now that Holden’s team has documented the mature trees in Edgewater, he said the group is partnering with local environmental experts to develop a plan to save them.

Holden said the group wants to hold the city accountable for any trees, historic or otherwise, it might consider removing.

“One of the people involved is putting together draft recommendations on legislation to address some of these issues,” Holden said. “We’re hoping some of the local aldermen will be inspired by what we’re doing and carry the ball on that. It’s in the early stages.”

South Hills Park gets a new tree for Arbor Day

Around 30 community members gathered Friday for the second annual Lebanon County Clean Water Alliance Arbor Day Celebration at South Hills Park, where a new tree was planted at the park during a program on tree planting and maintenance.

Jamie Yiengst, South Lebanon Township manager, kicked off the event with remarks before handing it off to Jon Schach, president of the Lebanon Valley Conservancy and general manager at Good's Tree and Lawn Care, who walked the attendees through a tree planting.

The labor of planting the tree was donated by Good's Tree and Lawn Care, and the tree was purchased by the township form Boltz Tree Farm and Nursery.

"I am honored that we're here in South Lebanon Township this year, we can show off our beautiful park, which is an official arboretum," Yiengst said.

The tree, an emerald sunshine elm, will grow to about 35 feet tall and 25 feet wide. Schach said that in about 10 years it will be about 25 feet tall.

Schach said American elms were extremely common years ago around town centers and cities but have mostly succumbed to Dutch elm disease. There has since been a concerted effort to get elm trees that aren't susceptible to the disease back into those streets. The emerald sunshine elm, a hybrid, is hearty and drought resistant.

The tree was planted near the tree that was planted during the 2023 event.

During the presentation, Schach provided several tips on how to plant a tree:

• Ensure the hole is just slightly bigger than the root ball, but not too deep.
• Be careful not to remove the entire wire basket around the root ball before placing it in the hole, as the root ball may collapse. But be sure to remove the wire basket from the area that roots will grow.
• Remove the burlap around the root ball.
• Remove the soil heaped up around the base of the tree, making sure the root flair is above or at grade level.
• Don't impact soil when adding to the hole, but make sure there's no air pockets.
• When mulching, be careful not to let mulch get up on the base of the tree.
• Ensure that trees are staked too tightly, as its important that the tree experiences movement from the elements.
• For maintenance, slowly water with an open hose instead of something like a high pressure spray nozzle. To check if a tree is sufficiently watered, pull mulch away down to the soil and check if the soil will clod up in hand.
• It's important to allow a tree to cycle between wet and dry. It's also important that a tree is well irrigated going into the winter.

Schach added that equally important as to how the tree is planted is for homeowners to know what kind of tree is right for them. For example, someone with smaller lawn probably shouldn't plant something like a large oak or sycamore. For those with the space to do it, though, he encourage the planting of larger trees, as he believes society doesn't plant enough of them.

Landscape centers are good at knowing what kind of tree might be best for someone's property

"Trees have many benefits for the areas we live and so by commemorating them and planting trees it allows people in the community to have that engagement," Schach said. "I feel like today people have less of an opportunity to have that experience.

"To be able to have conversations around trees and think about what they need to support themselves, that's very good."

'Slice of paradise' takes root with planting of Worcester's first Miyawaki forest

WORCESTER — In 1970, Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell lamented that paradise had been paved for a parking lot in her song "Big Yellow Taxi," with all of the trees dumped off at a museum.

On a bright and cool Saturday morning, City Chief Sustainability Officer John Odell said over 100 volunteers were doing the inverse of what Mitchell described in her classic song, planting trees in about 6,400 square feet of a tiny forest at the parking lot at McGrath Boulevard.

"We're actually taking out the parking lot and putting back a slice of paradise," Odell said. "This location was chosen in particular because it has great proximity to a lot of people."

The public was invited to begin planting trees, shrubs and bushes for the city’s first  Miyawaki forest along McGrath Boulevard, behind the Worcester Public Library at Salem Square.  

Miyawaki forests are named for the late Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, who developed a method of planting species in neglected urban plots. Saturday's event was an environmental milestone for the city, the first planting for a Miyawaki forest in the city.

The public is also invited for a second round of planting at McGrath from 1 to 3 p.m. and 3 to 4:30 p.m. May 11. The second planting coincides with the inaugural Green Worcester Summit held at the library. 

A second Miyawaki forest will be planted at Plumley Village Apartments, 16 Laurel St. Public plantings will happen there from 4 to 6 p.m. May 1 and from 10 a.m. to noon May 18.  

Both sites are in urban heat islands, where there is an abundance of concrete and few trees to lower temperatures on hot days. The sites are also located in "environmental justice communities," areas that have a high number of low-income residents of color whose first language is not English.

"The heat island effect is really dramatic (downtown), so you're right in the heart of some of the hottest spots in Worcester," Odell said.

Along with adding some shade cover for a hot part of the city, Odell said the forest will help mitigate storm water drainage issues, allows for biodiversity and would reduce air pollution from trains and roadways

Volunteers dug up soil and planted the trees, shrubs and bushes while others helped with adding mulch.

Rob Connolly, 26, a city employee with Worcester Emergency Management, helped dig trees Saturday. He heard about Miyawaki forests when he worked in the Somerville area and thought planting a forest in Worcester was a perfect chance to get involved.

"I don't mind getting a little bit sweaty when it's a nice day like this," Connolly said. "It's a good workout and thankfully the weather held out for us."

Rick Breault, 65, facilities manager at the YWCA of Central Massachusetts, also dug and planted Saturday. He said the forest would help to beautify the area where he works and would be a good spot for animals such as birds or rabbits.

"It will help with mental health, just people looking at something nice instead of a piece of asphalt. This area was empty for years," Breault said. "And it'll bring some more critters into the neighborhood."

Joseph Zwirblia, 63, of Worcester said he is involved with environment issues and is studying environmental problems at Worcester State University. He is interested in sustainability projects like the forest and helping secure a better future for younger generations.

"It's all about the young people, our future and climate change and trying to control global warming on a small scale here in Worcester," Zwirblia said.

Sanya Zdjelar, 55, of Newton has wanted to bring a Miyawaki forest to Newton and she came Saturday to learn about planting the forests. She said her daughter alerted her about the Worcester planting and they came together.

"What I really like about Miyawaki forests is the community involvement but also the fact that it's not just planting trees," Zdjelar said. "It's bringing life, it's biodiversity."

Looking over at the volunteers, Odell added that the forest can also build a community of people who are invested in caring for the forests in their cities.

The McGrath forest will also be in a highly visible part of the city, close to the library and Polar Park, and Odell said the city is trying to use it as an example for residents and developers so they may plant a few trees or a pollinator garden in their yards.

The projects are funded through a $400,000 state grant that requires both forests be finished by June 30. While the city originally wanted to plant seven Miyawaki forests over two years, it did not get the $1.6 million grant it needed from the state.

The funds also cover the design costs of two “cool pockets” for people to relax on a hot day. The city selected Columbus Park Elementary School and the Vernon Hill Playground between Vernon and Providence streets as sites for a cool pocket.  

After the design work is done, the city plans to look for state and federal grants to cover construction costs of the pockets.

Arbor Day started back in 1872 in Nebraska City, when a journalist proposed a day to inspire Nebraskans to plant trees in their community, states the History Channel.

Today, the holiday is recognized nation wide. According to GovInfo , President Richard Nixon designated the last Friday of April as National Arbor Day in 1970.

"At a time when we as a people are becoming more concerned with the quality of our environment, it is fitting that we give more attention to the planting of trees in rural and urban communities," said Nixon.

How did it get started?

This is the story of how the holiday got it's start, according to the History Channel.

The first Arbor Day was held on April 10, 1872 after Julius Sterling Morton, a journalist who soon became editor of Nebraska City News , the state’s first newspaper, proposed the idea.

He used his platform at the paper to educate people on the importance of trees, then proposed the idea for the day on January 7, 1872. It was a total success.

Fast forward to over a century later and his holiday is still being celebrated.

How do you celebrate Arbor Day?

According to the Arbor Day Foundation, there are several different ways folks can celebrate the holiday.

First, folks can always celebrate by planting a tree or volunteering for an organization to plant trees locally. The organization states people can also volunteer to clean up a park.

There are also simpler options, like reading books or even writing about trees.

Folks with extra cash can also choose to donate to organizations, like the National Forest Foundation , that are working to reforest national forests.

Why are trees important?

According to the Arbor Day Foundation , climate change is the biggest challenge that faces the planet, but more trees can pull greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide, out of the atmosphere.

"Every tree planted is a step in the right direction," states the foundation's website.

According to the EPA , planting trees and vegetation can cool areas.

"Research shows that urban forests have temperatures that are on average 2.9 degrees lower than unforested urban areas," it states.

Not only does planting trees in urban areas reduce the temperature, it also reduces energy use, improves air quality, and improves quality of life.

Trees prevent heat islands, too. These "islands" are urbanized areas that see higher temperatures of one to seven degrees higher than surrounding areas states the EPA .

According to Scientific American, they happen when an area lacks trees so heat gets absorbed by buildings, streets and parking lots.

According to the EPA , this phenomenon often affects people of color and folks who live in low-income communities and historically redlined neighborhoods.

"Planting trees in underserved neighborhoods addresses basic human rights to health, safety and welfare," states the Tree Equity Score's website , a tool that"highlights inequitable access to trees," which was developed by American Forests .

According to the Tree Equity Score, to reach "tree equity" around half a billion trees need to be planted in the United States, which would provide $3 billion in benefits every year.
