How to write a Fashion Designer cover letter
Here’s how you can write your own eye-catching cover letter, broken down into simple steps.
Write your cover letter in the body of an email/message
When you send a cover letter with a job application, you should always write your message into the body of your email – or the body of the messaging system if you are sending via a job website.
Why do this?
Simply because you want to get your message seen as soon as the recruiter opens your application.
If you attach the cover letter as a separate item, this means the recipient will have to open it before they can read it – slowing down the process and potentially causing frustration along the way.
So, write your cover note in the body of your email/message to ensure you make an instant connection with the reader.
Start with a friendly greeting
Start you cover letter with a greeting that is professional but friendly.
This will build rapport with the recruiter whilst showing your professionalism.
- Hi, hope you’re well
- Hi [insert recruiter name]
- Hi [insert department/team name]
Avoid overly formal greetings like “Dear sir/madam ” unless applying to very traditional companies.
How to find the contact’s name?
Addressing the recruitment contact by name is an excellent way to start building a strong relationship. If it is not listed in the job advert, try these methods to find it.
- Check out the company website and look at their About page. If you see a hiring manager, HR person or internal recruiter, use their name. You could also try to figure out who would be your manager in the role and use their name.
- Head to LinkedIn , search for the company and scan through the list of employees. Most professionals are on LinkedIn these days, so this is a good bet.
Identify the role you are applying for
Now that you have warmed the recruiter up with a friendly greeting, firstly you need to let them know which role you are applying for.
Sometimes a recruitment consultant will be juggling 10 or 10 vacancies, so it’s important to specify which one you are applying to.
Give us much detail as possible (team/department, role title etc.) and paste in the reference number if you have one.
Here are some examples you can use.
- I am interested in applying for the role of Fashion Designer with your company.
- I would like to apply for the role of Sales assistant (Ref: 40f57393)
- I would like to express my interest in the customer service vacancy within your retail department
- I saw your advert for an IT project manager on Reed and would like to apply for the role.

Highlight your suitability
The main purpose of your cover letter is to excite recruiters and make them eager to open your CV. And you achieve this by quickly demonstrating your suitability to the job you are applying for.
Take a look at the job adverts you are applying for, and make note of the most important skills being asked for.
Then, when you write your cover letter, make your suitability the focal point.
Explain how you meet the candidate requirements fully, and why you are so well suited to carry out the job.
This will give recruiters all the encouragement they need to open your CV and consider your application.
Keep it short and sharp
A good cover letter is short and sharp, getting to the point quickly with just enough information to grab the attention of recruiters.
Ideally your cover letter should be around 4-8 sentences long – anything longer will risk losing the attention of time-strapped recruiters and hiring managers .
Essentially you need to include just enough information to persuade the reader to open up your CV, where the in-depth details will sit.
Sign off professionally
To finish off your cover note, add a professional signature to the bottom, stating your important contact details and information.
This not only provides recruiters with multiple means of contacting you, but it also adds a nice professional appearance to the cover letter, which shows that you know how to conduct yourself in the workplace.
Include the following points;
- A friendly sign off – e.g. “Warm regards”
- Your full name
- Phone number (one you can answer quickly)
- Email address
- Profession title
- Professional social network – e.g. LinkedIn
Here is an example signature;
Warm regards,
Aaron Smith Customer service professional 075557437373 [email protected] LinkedIn
Quick tip : To save yourself from having to write your signature every time you send a job application, you can save it within your email drafts, or on a separate document that you could copy in.
What to include in your Fashion Designer cover letter
Here’s what kind of content you should include in your Fashion Designer cover letter…
The exact info will obviously depend on your industry and experience level, but these are the essentials.
- Your relevant experience – Where have you worked and what type of jobs have you held?
- Your qualifications – Let recruiters know about your highest level of qualification to show them you have the credentials for the job.
- The impact you have made – Show how your actions have made a positive impact on previous employers; perhaps you’ve saved them money or helped them to acquire new customers?
- Your reasons for moving – Hiring managers will want to know why you are leaving your current or previous role, so give them a brief explanation.
- Your availability – When can you start a new job ? Recruiters will want to know how soon they can get you on board.
Don’t forget to tailor these points to the requirements of the job advert for best results.

Steps or Template for Writing a Fashion Designer Job Cover Letter
Crafting a winning cover letter for a fashion designer position requires a blend of creativity, industry-specific knowledge, and a keen understanding of what employers are looking for. In the following sections, we'll explore each component of the cover letter, from the initial greeting to the closing sign-off, and provide actionable tips to make your application shine.
Heading and Salutation: The Perfect Start to Your Fashion Designer Cover Letter
A cover letter's heading and salutation are your first opportunity to make a positive impression. It's essential to get these details right to set the tone for the rest of your letter.
Your cover letter's heading should include your contact information, clearly and professionally presented. Here's what you should include:
Full Name : Your first and last name should be at the top of the page.
Job Title : Indicate that you are a Fashion Designer, or specify your area of expertise within the field.
Email Address : Choose a professional email address.
Phone Number : Include a reliable contact number, with country code if applying internationally.
Location : City and country are sufficient, but mention if you are open to relocation.
Portfolio Link : A link to your online portfolio is crucial for a fashion designer.
Personalizing the salutation shows attention to detail. Try to find out the name of the hiring manager or the head of the design department. If you can't find a specific name, use a general but respectful address.
Example Addressing Hiring Manager:
Dear Ms. Smith
Dear Alex Johnson
Example Addressing Company:
Dear Fashion Design Team
Dear Hiring Manager at [Company Name]
Remember, the opening of your cover letter sets the stage for the rest of your content, so make it count!
Addressing the Hiring Manager: Personalizing Your Fashion Designer Cover Letter
When addressing the hiring manager in your fashion designer cover letter, personalization is key. It demonstrates your attention to detail and shows that you've taken the time to research the company. This small effort can significantly impact how your application is received.
Tips for Addressing the Hiring Manager
Research the Company : Use the company's website, LinkedIn, or industry networks to find the name of the hiring manager or the head of the design department.
Be Respectful and Formal : Even if the fashion industry is known for its creativity and informality, maintain a professional tone in your salutation.
Use Titles Appropriately : If you know the hiring manager's title, use it. For example, "Dear Creative Director [Last Name]."
In Case of Doubt : If you cannot find a specific name, opt for a general but respectful address, such as "Dear Hiring Manager."
Dear Mr. Thompson
Dear Angela White
Dear Talent Acquisition Team at Versace
Dear Chanel Design Department
By addressing the hiring manager correctly, you start off on the right foot, showing that you are a professional who values personal connections.
Opening Paragraph: Crafting a Captivating Introduction
The opening paragraph of your cover letter as a fashion designer is your chance to grab the hiring manager's attention. It should be engaging, succinct, and convey your enthusiasm for the role and the company.
Tips for a Compelling Opening
Start with Enthusiasm : Express your excitement about the role and the company. Show that you're not just looking for any job, but specifically this one.
Mention a Key Achievement : Highlight a notable accomplishment in your career that's relevant to the role you're applying for. This could be a successful collection you designed, an award you won, or a significant project you led.
Connect with the Company : Demonstrate your knowledge about the company. Mention something specific about their brand, ethos, or recent collections that resonates with you.
Example Opening Paragraphs:
"I was thrilled to see the opening for a Senior Fashion Designer at Balenciaga. Having led a team that won the [Award Name] for innovative sustainable design, I am excited about the prospect of bringing my expertise in eco-friendly fashion to a brand renowned for its cutting-edge designs."
"As a lifelong admirer of Louis Vuitton's commitment to blending tradition with innovation, I am eager to contribute my decade of experience in high-end fashion design to your esteemed team, particularly after your groundbreaking recent collection inspired by [specific theme]."
A well-crafted opening paragraph sets the tone for the rest of your cover letter, making the hiring manager eager to read on.
Main Body of the Cover Letter: Detailing Your Fashion Design Expertise
The main body of your cover letter is where you delve into the details of your professional experience, skills, and specific qualifications that make you the ideal candidate for the fashion designer position. This section should be informative, engaging, and tailored to the job you're applying for.
Highlighting Relevant Experience and Skills
Tailor Your Experience : Focus on experiences and projects that directly relate to the job description. Share details about specific collections you've worked on, design projects, or roles that align with the responsibilities of the position you're applying for.
Showcase Your Unique Skills : Highlight the skills that set you apart in the fashion industry, such as a particular design technique, knowledge of sustainable materials, or expertise in a certain fashion genre.
Demonstrate Industry Knowledge : Show that you're up-to-date with current trends and industry standards. Mention any relevant fashion shows, events, or publications where your work has been featured.
Using Specific Examples
Provide Context : When discussing past roles or projects, give enough context to help the hiring manager understand the significance of your work.
Quantify Achievements : Where possible, use numbers or statistics to quantify your successes, such as the sales growth for a collection you designed or the scale of a fashion show you contributed to.
Example from Main Body of Cover Letter:
"In my recent role at Yves Saint Laurent, I spearheaded a team that developed an award-winning avant-garde collection, which resulted in a 20% increase in media coverage for the brand. My dedication to merging classic elegance with modern trends was evident in this collection, aligning well with your brand's vision of innovative yet timeless design."
The main body of your cover letter should paint a clear picture of why you are the best fit for the role, using specific examples and experiences from your career.
Ending Section: Concluding Your Fashion Designer Cover Letter
The concluding section of your fashion designer cover letter is your chance to wrap up your argument as to why you are the ideal candidate for the position. It should reiterate your interest, summarize your qualifications, and include a call to action.
Summarizing Your Qualifications
Restate Your Interest : Reaffirm your enthusiasm for the role and the company.
Highlight Key Qualifications : Briefly summarize the qualifications and experiences that make you a perfect fit for the job.
Express Confidence : Convey confidence in your ability to contribute positively to the company.
Call to Action
Encourage Further Discussion : Invite the hiring manager to contact you for an interview or further discussion.
Provide Contact Information Again : Though it's already in the header, reiterating your contact information here makes it easy for the hiring manager to reach out.
Professional Sign-Off
Use a Professional Closing : Opt for traditional closings like "Sincerely" or "Best regards."
Include Your Name : End with your full name for a formal finish.
Example Ending Section:
"I am very enthusiastic about the opportunity to bring my unique blend of traditional craftsmanship and innovative design to [Company Name]. I am confident that my hands-on experience and creative vision would be a valuable addition to your team. Please feel free to contact me at [phone number] or [email address] to arrange an interview. I look forward to the possibility of contributing to [Company Name]'s continued success.
Best regards,
[Your Full Name]"
A well-crafted ending leaves a lasting impression and can significantly increase your chances of being called for an interview.

Your freelance fashion designer cover letter should include a header (with your name, position, and date); a greeting and introductory paragraph; a body and closing paragraphs; and an optional signature.
Remember that you're writing your freelance fashion designer cover letter for recruiters - as the Applicant Tracker System won't scan this content.
Here are a few more tips and tricks to keep in mind when formatting your freelance fashion designer cover letter:
- Use the same font in your freelance fashion designer cover letter and resume . We recommend modern fonts, e.g. Lato and Rubik, to help you stand out, instead of the stereotypical Arial and Times New Roman.
- Each paragraph should have single spacing, which is already set up for you in our cover letter templates .
- Our cover letter builder follows industry standards for your freelance fashion designer cover letter formatting - with a one-inch margin, surrounding your content.
- Always export your freelance fashion designer cover letter in PDF to ensure the image or text quality stays the same and your writing isn't moved about.
The top sections on a freelance fashion designer cover letter
- Header: This includes your name, contact information, and date, which are crucial for the recruiter to know who you are and how to reach you, establishing the first line of communication.
- Greeting: Address the letter to a specific person if possible, showing that you’ve done your research and are personally interested in working with their fashion brand or company.
- Introduction: Introduce yourself as a freelance fashion designer, highlighting your passion for fashion design and any unique personal branding or design philosophy you have, which is key to standing out in a creative field.
- Professional Experience and Achievements: Detail your relevant fashion design experience, notable projects, and specific accomplishments, demonstrating your track record and how your skills can benefit the prospective client or employer.
- Closing: Express your enthusiasm for the opportunity, your willingness to provide a portfolio, and thank the reader for their time, ending your letter on a polite and expectant note, inviting further discussion.
Key qualities recruiters search for in a candidate’s cover letter
- Strong portfolio showcasing original designs and a diverse range of styles, demonstrating creativity and a keen fashion sense.
- Proficiency in fashion design software (e.g., Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop) and technical drawing skills to effectively communicate design ideas.
- Up-to-date knowledge of current fashion trends, forecasts, and industry movements to create relevant and appealing collections.
- Experience with material selection, pattern making, and garment construction, ensuring practical and producible designs.
- Excellent project management skills and the ability to work on tight deadlines, reflecting the often time-sensitive nature of fashion projects.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills for collaborating with clients, manufacturers, and suppliers to realize design visions.
How to start your freelance fashion designer cover letter: with a greeting, of course
Have you ever considered just how powerful a personalized salutation can be?
We sure have news for you! Your freelance fashion designer cover letter should start with the right salutation to recruiters, nurturing a sense of respect and individuality.
Greet recruiters by using their first name (e.g. "Dear Tom" or "Dear Patricia") if you've previously established contact with them.
Otherwise, opt out for the less familiar, "Dear Ms. Peaches" or "Dear Ms Kelsey", if you've found the recruiter's name on LinkedIn or a corporate website.
"To whom it may concern" is never a good option, as it creates a sense that you've been sending out your freelance fashion designer cover letter to anyone. Instead, use "Dear HR team" or "Dear (company name) recruiter" for a feeling of exclusivity.
List of salutations you can use
- Dear Hiring Manager,
- Dear [Company Name] Team,
- Dear [Department] Manager,
- Good Day [Recipient's Name],
- Dear Mr./Ms. [Recipient's Last Name],
- Dear [Recipient's Full Name],
Your freelance fashion designer cover letter intro: showing your interest in the role
On to the actual content of your freelance fashion designer cover letter and the introductory paragraph .
The intro should be no more than two sentences long and presents you in the best light possible.
Use your freelance fashion designer cover letter introduction to prove exactly what interests you in the role or organization. Is it the:
- Company culture;
- Growth opportunities;
- Projects and awards the team worked on/won in the past year;
- Specific technologies the department uses.
When writing your freelance fashion designer cover letter intro, be precise and sound enthusiastic about the role.
Your introduction should hint to recruiters that you're excited about the opportunity and that you possess an array of soft skills, e.g. motivation, determination, work ethic, etc.
The middle or body of your freelance fashion designer cover letter body: a great instrument to tell a story
Now that you've set the right tone with the greeting and introduction of your freelance fashion designer cover letter, it's time to get down to business .
Hear us out, the body of your freelance fashion designer cover letter is the best storytelling instrument you have, in your job-hunting arsenal.
Writing the next three to six paragraphs, take the time to reassess the advert to discover job-crucial requirements.
Next, choose one accomplishment that covers those key skills and talents.
Use precisely that achievement to tell an exciting story of how you match the ideal candidate profile.
In the undertones of your story or freelance fashion designer cover letter body, hint at the difference you'd make and sell your application as the perfect one for the job.
Ending your freelance fashion designer cover letter: a closing paragraph with a promise
If you're thinking of finishing your freelance fashion designer cover letter with a "Sincerely yours" or "Thanks for the consideration," you need to read on.
End the final paragraph of your freelance fashion designer cover letter with a twist:
- a promise - of how you'd grow as a professional, part of the company, or improve organizational metrics;
- a call to action - prompt interviewers with some follow-up actions if they are interested in your profile.
A personalized ending would surely help you to stand out by being a memorable candidate.
What could you write about in your freelance fashion designer cover letter when you have no experience
Candidates with zero professional experience often struggle to write their freelance fashion designer cover letter .
You may lack experience, but your application could still be impressive when you focus on your strengths.
Consider your most relevant talents (and/or one achievement) that align with the role and help you stand out.
Perhaps you spent every summer volunteering at your local dog pound - think of the job-relevant skills this experience taught you.
Sharing your tangible career goals is another good strategy to stand out.

How to write a cover letter for a fashion designer
A fashion designer's job may allow for a bit of imagination. However, be sure that your resume and cover letter ingenuity is elegant and appropriate. Choose a sleek interface with a unique look in the information. A cover letter, motivation letter or an application letter is linked to or accompanied by another file, including a résumé or curriculum vitae. The primary goal of a cover letter or motivational letter is to convince an HR professional that you are the best applicant for a specific role. Here are some tips to follow when composing a cover letter for a fashion designer;
- Research the employer and the business. It will assist you in standing out from the sea of candidates. Big corporations, for instance, sometimes have different divisions for online and offline activities. Similarly, emailing the right person gives you credits.
- Be as brief as possible, both in terms of vocabulary and duration. Your resume contains a lot of material. There's no reason to go over it all again in your cover letter. Illustrate the benefits you offer to the company and highlight your expertise if it is outstanding. When you're just starting, rely on your key strengths.
- It is up to you to effectively show your capabilities. As a result, mention your strengths and skills.
- It is your responsibility to choose who may receive your career application. Before writing your cover letter, get some information about the hiring manager to add their name to the cover letter. Do your study and be thorough about the job position.
- These days, no one has the patience to read lengthy letters. Two-three paragraphs are sufficient. People's attention spans have significantly declined. So get their interest with a catchy initial statement and then present them with something fun and valuable. Make it apparent what they will receive if they recruit you.
- Don't go overboard when describing yourself. It is better to write a follow-up email if you don't hear from the recruiter.

"Sincerely" or "Best Regards" should be used to end the message. Proofread the cover letter before sending it to confirm that there are no grammar or spelling mistakes.

Fashion cover letter example
We’ve come a long way since Adam and Eve, when the first fashion statement was a fig leaf. Today’s fashion industry is complex, globalized and multifaceted, but getting a job in this field still requires an “old-fashioned” fashion cover letter, and that’s what this guide is all about.
The fashion industry today is populated by international celebrities, from top designers to supermodels, as well as ordinary people who cut cloth or blog about fashion. One source, TARGETjobs , lists 28 jobs in the field, but notes that it would be impossible to list every job in the fashion industry. The roles are often highly specialised, so the fashion cover letter offers the applicant a blank page on which they can weave their intricate career story.
What we’ll discuss in this guide (reinforced by real cover letter examples):
- The 5 critical components of a cover letter: header, greeting, introduction, body and conclusion
- Best format for a fashion cover letter
The psychology of writing a persuasive cover letter
- Common mistakes to avoid in your cover letter.

Choosing the best format for a fashion cover letter
The format of a fashion cover letter includes all the structural and design elements: the framework, the style, the fonts, the margins, the overall approach to the look and feel. A cover letter should be one page only, a maximum of 350-400 words, and you need to get all the components right.
The traditional format of a fashion cover letter includes:
- The cover letter header
- The greeting / salutation
- The letter introduction
- The cover letter middle part (body)
- The ending of a cover letter (with a call to action).
Now let’s take a look at each of these in detail (along with some cover letter samples) to see how you can write them better!
Cover letter header
When sending an email, we’re used to putting your name last, but in a cover letter, you need to put it first AND last. Your cover letter header is a section at the top of your letter that should include your name, occupation, address, phone number and email. The header may also include your photo, and perhaps your LinkedIn profile or some other job-relevant link. These links are particularly important if you wish to include your fashion portfolio.
The header is an important design element of your cover letter, making it look better at a glance. It may contain a splash of color, innovative use of typography and a creative layout. Below the header, your letter will generally contain nothing but paragraphs in black text, so your header is the only real place to display some of your design chops. (And in fashion, it goes without saying, design is kind of important.) Make sure that you choose a header that reflects your style - best of all, design it yourself.
If you are a brilliant designer, by all means feel free to design your own cover letter header. But bear in mind that designing a dress and designing a page of text are two different challenges. The safest way to choose a resume header is to use a professional template that’s pre-designed for you. You need your cover letter to be legible, so make sure that you are confident with the technology that you are using.
Dear Mrs. Samson,
My fashion buying career has taken me to fifteen countries, two hundred factories, frenzied design meetings, and fabulous focus groups.
I understand the end-to-end process as I started my career on a graduate scheme and undertook six different roles over three years. I was promoted to buying manager in the procurement team over a period of five years. I also took part in assignments in the logistics and design teams to gain further experience. Average cost savings of 12% and sourcing strategies that delivered $1.8m in extra sales only happen if everyone pulls together.
I specialise in fast-fashion. From skirts and dresses to outerwear and knitwear. I perfected the forecasting of my open to buy using a mix of predictive AI and collaboration with major fashion houses. I wasn’t making the trends, but I was certainly only one step behind.
My department gained market share by 5% points while I was buying manager, moving into new customer segments as our proportion of online shopping increased. Close work with marketing ensured a swifter route to market than any competitor. Whenever a line didn’t sell, we created a post-retail international distribution channel. Shrinkage was at industry minimums.
As more than half of your revenue comes from your online operations, the time that I spent heading up an ecommerce project will come in useful. We reduced time to market from 45 days to 40 days and had a higher volume of promotions than any competitor.
I look forward to sharing my buying portfolio and can take you through the numbers if I am invited to an interview.
Marissa Laymont
Cover letter greeting
When you write a letter to your sister Sue, feel free to open by saying “Hey Sue.” But don’t even think of adopting such a casual style for a cover letter greeting — unless you happen to know the person you’re writing to really well.
“Dear Mr. X” or “Dear Ms. Y” are the traditional and time-honored ways of writing the greeting, also known as the salutation, for any business letter. Don’t overthink this, and go with the safest option unless there’s a good reason not to. And by the way, if you don’t know the name of the person you should be writing to, do what you can to find out, as a cover letter addressed to an actual person will generally get better results. Phoning the employer is a great way of fidning out a useful piece of information as well as tacking on an extra burning question that you might have.
Below you can find a cover letter sample of the greeting.
Cover letter introduction
Your first paragraph, the cover letter introduction, should make a compelling opening statement about your qualifications for the job you’re seeking.
Usually this will mean some allusion to your experience, or perhaps your education and training. It should be clear from your introduction what you do, what you’d like to do, and why you’re good at it. Good cover letter examples will use facts from the applicant’s career history along with engaging emotional language for the best results.
Use the kind of language that gets attention — strong and provocative. Make sure that you include some industry jargon that is very specific to your role - you need to make it clear that you know your stuff. Here’s some cover letter sample writing for the introduction of a fashion cover letter:
Cover letter middle part (body)
The middle paragraphs of your cover letter, generally known as the body, should contain the meat and potatoes of your pitch. If you don’t have the material to build a winning case here, then you may be doomed.
In fashion as in any field, experience is key. So if you do have experience in this field, lead with that, not just mentioning the places you’ve worked but detailing what you achieved with each employer.
Be as specific as possible, using facts and figures (dollar figures, percentage growth, etc.). Try to use at least one anecdote that tells a short story about some challenge you faced in the past, how you addressed it and the positive result you achieved. Cover letter samples found on the web are often dry and lack impressive facts and achievements. This can be due to the fact that they are designed for thousands of diverse job seekers, but you need to make sure you adapt your application letter to your own story.
You can also use the body of your letter to address any job-relevant education or certifications you hold (if you feel it’s really something to be proud of, remember that space on the page is valuable). And you can take advantage of the body of your letter to address the specific employer you’re writing to about how you believe your contributions could make this company stronger, more profitable and more efficient.
Here’s a cover letter example of the middle paragraphs:
How to close a fashion cover letter (conclusion and sign-off)
In the closing paragraph of your cover letter, you might want to thank the recruiter for taking the time to review your application. You might provide some sort of summary of what you’ve already said, or introduce a previously unmentioned qualification.
But you also want to include some kind of call to action — something you’d like the hiring manager to do as a result of your letter. This can be as simple as saying that you’re eager to hear back about the possibility of setting up an interview, or reminding the recruiter that you’re always reachable at the contact info you’ve already provided.
The last thing you want is for the recipient of your letter to set it aside and do nothing about it. Plant the thought that you are serious about this job — not just any job — and that you are ready and willing at any time to discuss the contributions that you can make to this enterprise. Below is some cover letter sample writing for the closing part of the application document.
Always remember that you’re not trying to convince anyone that you deserve a job — you’re trying to convince a hiring manager that your contribution will make the company stronger, more profitable and more efficient. In other words, you’re going to do more for them than they’re going to do for you.
Put yourself in the shoes of the person you’re writing to, and reread your own letter as if you were the hiring manager. Take a close look at your tone — is it arrogant or presumptuous, or does it strike the right notes about the value you will add in helping this company to achieve its goals?
A cover letter must include a certain amount of humble boasting — you have to blow your own horn a bit, because if you don’t, nobody else will. But it should never cross a line into arrogance or claims that you are the “perfect” person for this job.
One question to ask yourself is whether your cover letter makes you sound likable. Nobody wants to hire someone they don’t like. So whatever your experience or skill level, present yourself as an experienced, competent professional, but maintain a tone that never crosses a line into misplaced overconfidence.
Mistakes to avoid in a fashion cover letter
Here are some mistakes you don’t want to make in your fashion cover letter.
- Typos and other writing mistakes. In a one-page letter in which you’re seeking a job, you can’t afford any typos, misspelled words, or errors in grammar, punctuation or capitalization. If English is not your long suit, find an editor to review and revise your letter before you send it.
- Mass mailings. You CAN send the exact same Christmas letter to everyone in your family, but don’t try this with a cover letter. Make each cover letter unique, targeted to a certain job at a certain company, and address how you can help each company you address.
- Irrelevant info. Your space is so limited that you have to make sure you use it appropriately. So avoid discussions of your hobbies or other extraneous info, and focus on providing information that spells out why you’re qualified for this job.
- Poor design. If your letter has an ugly header, an exotic text in an unreadable font size, near-zero margins or other design errors … then why would a fashion company want to hire you?
Review Resume.io’s cover letter templates and you’ll find styles that include “Modern,” “Creative,” “Simple” and “Professional.” In the fashion field, you may want to lean toward “Creative,” though any of these styles might work for you. Look through all the options, find one you like, click on it and make it yours. You’ll be building on a foundation of success.
Key takeaways
Fashion is an incredibly competitive field and with new entrants coming from fashion colleges every year, the popularity of the industry has never been higher. Social media has raised the profile of the industry, so make sure that your cover letter highlights you as an industry leader.
Our advice remains the same: use our cover letter examples as the basis for your inspiration and use our templates where all the formatting and design issues are already taken care of. All you have to do is write the letter.

Great graphic designers put a lot of thought and effort into curating and presenting their work because they know a designer’s portfolio is one of the most important tools in the job hunting toolbox.
But as every graphic designer knows, each project you work on requires more than one tool. So whether you’re seeking your next freelance gig, agency job, or landing your first internship, you also need a great resume and cover letter. Already have a great graphic designer resume ? In this article, get tips for perfecting your graphic design cover letter so it stands out to hiring managers.
The goal of a graphic design cover letter
The field of graphic design is competitive, so breaking through to recruiters and hiring managers is challenging. Even with a beautiful portfolio, if your application doesn’t grab someone’s attention, it could sink beneath a sea of other applications. If no one ever bothers to open your application, the design portfolio you spent so much time on goes unseen.
A graphic design cover letter is a summary of you, your skills, and an explanation of why you want the design job and why you’re the right fit.
A cover letter is the first step in catching the attention of prospective employers or others. It’s a summary of you, your skills , and an explanation of why you want the graphic designer position and why you’re right for the job. For designers, submitting a job application without grabbing the reader’s attention is like publishing a magazine without a cover.
What should your graphic design cover letter include?
Before getting into specific elements of a good cover letter, it’s important to note that cover letters should be concise. When speaking to potential employers, the goal is to spark interest, not tell a grand narrative — which might be a relief for designers who don’t think of themselves as writers.
With that being said, let’s take a look at the essential elements of a cover letter:
- An attractive header: Every cover letter you send should include a header that matches your personal and professional brand. It should also have all of your contact info, such as your phone number and email address, and relevant links, such as your portfolio, Dribbble, and LinkedIn profile.
- An engaging introduction: The initial personalized salutation and the introductory paragraph of your cover letter should serve as a way to grab the reader’s attention. Address the hiring manager or recruiter by name and briefly explain why you’re interested in the job and company.
- Convincing body paragraphs: In two or three paragraphs, the body of your letter should tell the reader who you are as a designer, why you believe you’re a great fit for the job, and what you like about the position and company’s mission. Include the kind of graphic design experience you have as well as any successes to back up your stated experiences, such as design awards, certifications, or any other achievements.
- A call to action: Finally, your cover letter’s sign-off should thank the hiring manager for their time and encourage them to learn more about you. You might also briefly reiterate your interest and enthusiasm and include an additional link to your portfolio or other contact information.
There are exceptions to these rules, of course. Some companies tell you what to include in a cover letter, so be sure to read the job description carefully. But besides any unique requests by the business, the checklist above is widely accepted and expected in graphic design.
How do I write about myself as a graphic designer?
It’s not uncommon for designers, especially those early in their careers, to recoil at the thought of writing a strong cover letter. But writing pulls from the same skills that designers already have, specifically communication and creative problem-solving.
Writing pulls from the same skills that designers already have: Communication and creative problem-solving.
The key to writing about yourself as a graphic designer is to take a step back and look at the problem objectively. Imagine yourself as the employer, and ask yourself about the design projects you’ve worked on, your achievements, and your strengths as a designer. The answers to these questions are the essence of what you’ll write in your cover letters.
How to write a cover letter for a graphic design position
Writing a cover letter that packs a punch still takes some practice, but starting with a process can help ease you into the practice. After writing a few cover letters, you’ll find the process becomes second nature. And hopefully, by this point, you’ll find yourself in a position where you’re designing rather than writing.
✔️ Learn everything you can about the company and position
Before you tackle the writing part of your cover letter, sit down and read through the graphic design job description . Take note of anything that stands out to you, such as when the description mentions tools you excel at or skills you feel you demonstrate well.
Once you’ve done this, head to the company’s website and explore what it does. Take note of anything that stands out or resonates with you, including overall web design. As a graphic designer, you’ll probably examine the company’s brand identity. Apply this same skill to its brand voice and write a few adjectives describing it.
Lastly, if you haven’t found out already, make an effort to learn the name of the person who receives the applications. If at all possible, avoid opening a cover letter with “to whom it may concern” or other generic greetings. Instead, address the hiring manager or recruiter directly with a simple salutation and their first or last name.
✔️ Turn your notes into an outline
The best way for new writers to tackle writing projects is by breaking them down via outlines. Borrowing from the elements listed earlier, designate an introduction, two or three paragraphs for the body, and a sign-off. You can simply jot down ideas for these sections in bullet points. This is your outline.
Now you can go back to your notes and start fitting them into place. Most of your writing should be in the body, but if there’s something that excites you about the company or position, you can include it in the introduction. Likewise, you can weave this theme throughout, mentioning it in your sign-off.
✔️ Draft (and rewrite) your cover letter
Now it’s time to start writing. Hopefully, by now, your research and note-taking put a few ideas in your head. Write them down without judging them. As you go through this process, you’ll get better ideas about what to say and how to say it.
Keep in mind, a cover letter is a hook — not a complete story or resume. While you should talk about your work experience and graphic design skills in a broad sense, avoid explaining something like your proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite. Keep these mentions in your resume alongside those about Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.
Think back to the brand of the company you’re applying to. Try to match the tone of your wording to that of the company.
Finally, once you know what you want to say, you can rewrite and polish your words. At this stage, think back to the brand of the company you’re applying to. Try to match the tone of your wording to that of the company. For example, if you’re applying to a business that has a playful, casual brand, write a little casually. On the other hand, if you’re applying to an agency that services clients, you’ll want to write a more professional cover letter.

Hello John Doe,
I’m writing about the internship you posted for [Company Name] . As a passionate graphic designer set to graduate this year, I’m thrilled about the opportunity, and I’d like to take a moment to tell you why I’d be a great fit for the role.
As mentioned, I’m graduating this year with a Bachelor’s in Graphic Design from [University] . When I began my formal education, my skills in creative problem solving and practical design tools were already well-honed. During my sophomore year, I won the Indigo Design Award for Graphic Design of the Year.
This brings me to the internship opportunity at [Company Name] . The work your company does is inspirational and innovative, and that work is one of the reasons I started designing at such an early age. ✏ Entry-level graphic design cover letter example
Hi Jane Doe,
I came across the posting on [Design Agency’s] website for a new graphic designer, and I wanted to write to express my interest. As a close follower of [Design Agency’s] work from the beginning of my career, the word “interest” is a bit of an understatement.
Since graduating 2 years ago, I’ve worked for [Agency Name] as an intern designing logos, infographics, visual identities, advertisements, and a handful of billboards. In fact, I was a key designer on [Company Name’s] brand refresh last year!
While I love the work I do, over the last year, I’ve immersed myself in design thinking and collaborative design while learning HTML and CSS in my spare time. I believe I’d make a great addition to the [Agency Name] team since the position entails split responsibilities between branding and creating design systems for web applications.
I’ve attached my resume and portfolio, and I’d love the opportunity to speak to you further. I appreciate your consideration, and I look forward to hearing from you.
