“My Dissertation is Killing Me!” How to Survive and Graduate

No one ever said that getting a Ph.D. is easy (trust me, no one!), and the hard truth is that it’s no walk in the park. While graduate students’ experiences in their doctoral programs vary widely, almost everyone hits a wall at some point during the dissertation process. The reality is, writing your dissertation is likely the greatest intellectual challenge you’ve ever faced. Most graduate students encounter one or two major roadblocks along the way. 

It’s not all gloom and doom, though. While everyone thinks their dissertation is plotting their demise at one point or another, it’s a natural feeling and one that can be combated. If you feel like you’re on the verge of a meltdown, don’t despair. Take a day or two, if you need it, figure out the root of the problem, and then form an action plan. You’ll be back on the road to finishing your Ph.D. in no time.

Why is My Dissertation Killing Me?

When you’re ready, it can be helpful to do a bit of reflection and identify the specific source of your discontent. Isolating the problem, or problems, will give you an opportunity to determine the size, scope, and perhaps even cause of the issue. A dissertation can seem like an insurmountable monolith. Breaking it down into a series of steps can help you put things in perspective and see that you’re facing hills, not mountains.

There are many places where a dissertation can feel like it’s going off the rails:  

Finding a Topic

Depending on your field of study, deciding on your topic and forming your research question can be difficult. Luckily, there are effective strategies for finding a gap in the literature to plant your flag as a researcher. 

Theoretical Foundation

Formulating the theoretical foundation of your dissertation can also be tricky. Even after taking all of the relevant coursework, comprehending and evaluating theories relevant to your research often feels unnatural at first. It takes a while to become comfortable wielding theory, so give yourself some time and practice. 

There is nothing as daunting as a blank page, and we’ve all faced writer’s block at one time or another. Whether it is a matter of finding the time, the energy, or the inspiration, writing can feel like a tremendous chore even when you’re enthusiastic about your topic and have meaningful insight to contribute. Luckily, there are tried and true strategies for helping you get started and maintain momentum.

Making the Dissertation Process Easier

While there is no single, surefire shortcut to making your dissertation a breeze, there are steps you can take to mitigate the most difficult parts of the process. When I was writing my dissertation, getting organized was essential. Having a plan helped me stay on track and also keep my sanity. While it didn’t change the amount of work I had to do, knowing exactly what was ahead of me was reassuring. 

As soon as you can, work with your dissertation chair or Ph.D. advisor to develop a dissertation timeline . Use a template to map out each milestone of your dissertation, from your dissertation prospectus , to your proposal , to each chapter of your dissertation. From there, you can build a rough timeline to help you meet your goals for completing each milestone. Sharing this timeline with your chair or advisor (plus a writing partner or a coach ) will help you stay accountable and on target for your dissertation defense. 

In my experience, creating accountability is vital for finishing your dissertation. Writing your dissertation can be a lonely process, and it can be hard to generate the momentum you’ll need when you’re doing it on your own. In addition to reaching out for support, it can also be helpful to make calendar appointments with yourself to create a daily writing habit. Dedicating as little as fifteen minutes a day to your writing can make a noticeable difference in your mindset. 

What Resources are Available for Help?

While holding yourself accountable is an important key to finishing your dissertation, please know that you don’t have to go through the process alone. Chipping away at your dissertation can be a lonely endeavor, and reaching out to others who understand what you’re going through is a great way to feel less isolated and more engaged with your research. It’s important to realize that there are people you can rely on for support when you feel like your dissertation is killing you. 

So who can you turn to? While your Ph.D. advisor or dissertation chair are the usual suspects, the amount of time they have for you may be limited. If you don’t have a mentor-mentee relationship with them, they also may not be a natural choice if you’re seeking a bit of TLC, or even a shoulder to cry on. That’s okay–there are others you can seek out for additional support.

Don’t be afraid to reach out to members of your cohort. When I was working on my dissertation, it was very helpful to meet up with classmates and compare notes about how things were going and books/articles that illuminated the murkiness. A quick coffee date is also a great way to raise your spirits. Even in online programs where you don’t see each other face-to-face in class, Zoom meetings or Google Hangouts are a perfect way to commiserate and share resources. 

Additional Resources

In addition to working with faculty and classmates, there are other resources you can seek out when it feels like your dissertation is killing you. If you need help making a plan and sticking to it, a Ph.D. coach can be a great source of knowledge and support. Developmental and content editors are also helpful consultants during the writing and editing process, and great people to have on your team.

10 things to do when you feel like your dissertation is killing you

A surprising number of people google ‘my dissertation is killing me’ every month. Writing a dissertation is not an easy task: It can be tough, regardless of what level. If you feel defeated, discouraged or exhausted because of your dissertation, check out 10 concrete things you can do to improve your situation.

1. Identify the nature of your struggle

2. reach out to your supervisor/s and peers, 3. reach out to family and friends, 4. find an accountability partner, 5. look for professional support, 6. take a proper break, 7. develop a daily routine that incorporates rest and fun, 8. prioritise your health, 9. consider extending your studies, 10. consider quitting your programme.

Okay, so you feel like your dissertation is killing you. But what does that mean?

Identifying the nature of your struggles is an important first step to improving your situation.

  • Are you struggling to develop the direction of your thesis, and find the right literature?
  • Do you have a hard time focusing, while you feel anxious about the upcoming deadlines?
  • Do you feel like you are working non-stop, and have no time for hobbies or friends?
  • Do you feel depressed and struggle to get up in the morning?

These are just a few examples. So take a minute or two and identify your individual struggle with your dissertation.

Supervisors are there to support you during your dissertation process. That’s their job. Too many students struggle behind closed doors but pretend that everything is going okay during meetings with their supervisor/s.

If you struggle with your dissertation, take the courage to reach out to your supervisor/s. Supervisors can help you to overcome challenges in your dissertation in terms of content. They can also provide you with useful tips on concentrating, writing or maintaining a work-life balance.

The same is true for peers. Once you are open about your struggles, you may be surprised to hear that you are not alone. Connect with your colleagues and find ways to help each other.

Everyone who struggles with a dissertation has different needs. A common tendency, however, is to feel stressed and overwhelmed, and as a consequence to withdraw from social interactions. However, this is a bad idea.

When writing a dissertation, you need all the support you can get!

Maybe it helps you to plan fun outings with your friends in the evenings so that you have something to look forward to when you work on your dissertation during the day.

Or maybe all you need is a daily phone call with your mum or your best friend, to feel less lonely and know that someone is rooting for you.

Reach out to your family and/or friends and tell them how you feel. Be concrete about the type of support that you could benefit from.

Beyond reaching out to peers, family and friends, it can be extremely useful to find an accountability partner.

An accountability partner is a person who keeps you to your commitment. This commitment could be, for instance, to write 500 words every day.

Accountability partners tend to be people who are in the same boat. This means, in our case, they are writing a dissertation as well. However, you do not need to limit your search for an accountability partner to other dissertation writers.

Furthermore, be creative. For example, if you don’t know anyone else who is in a similar stage of your dissertation, or if you don’t get along with your colleagues or peers, you could join an online writing group.

When you struggle with your dissertation, just know one thing: you do not have to figure out everything by yourself!

Many universities have student councillors and other support mechanisms that can help to you overcome roadblocks and find suitable professional support. This can range from writing support, to coaching or mental health counselling.

There is no shame in asking for help! On the contrary, admitting that you struggle and looking for (professional) support is a sign of courage and strength.

Many students suffer from mental health issues, including loneliness, persistent sadness, depression, anxiety, or hopelessness. If you do, know that you are not alone and that there is support available.

Our brains are simply not wired to work non-stop. Additionally, when we are stressed or anxious, our cognitive functions decline.

While it seems completely counter-intuitive to take a proper break when you are trying to write your dissertation, it can make a world of difference!

Taking proper breaks could entail a strict time to close your dissertation files every day at 6 pm to enjoy the rest of the evening. Or it could be taking a whole week off, including a change of scenery so that you can recuperate.

And I promise you: You will notice the difference in the way you can tackle your dissertation after taking a proper break.

Humans thrive on routines. Take an energy audit to figure out when you are most creative or most productive throughout the day. Then, set up a daily routine around these times.

One key element of developing a daily routine is to schedule your breaks in advance. This can include short breaks to check emails or social media, or to stretch. It can also include longer breaks to take a walk, have lunch or meet a friend for coffee. You could also try the Pomodoro method .

When you know that your daily routine accounts for rest and fun, it is much easier to focus on your dissertation.

Remember, writing a dissertation is a marathon, not a sprint. Incorporate activities that give you energy, so you will not be completely exhausted at the end of the day.

Without a healthy body or mind, it is much harder to tackle a dissertation. Therefore, do what you can within your powers to prioritise your health:

  • Exercise provides your brain with oxygen, and can reduce anxiety and stress!
  • Try to eat healthily. A salad for lunch instead of a McDonald’s burger will make you feel better and prevent that mid-afternoon slump!
  • Prioritise sleep for more efficient thesis writing . Proper sleep improves your cognitive capacities, can reduce anxiety and improve your quality of life!

Some struggles are not solved by exercising, eating healthy or talking with your supervisor. While all these steps can help to improve your situation, they may not solve your problems.

So if you feel like your dissertation is killing you, check if there are any options to extend your studies to give you more time. For instance, to take a proper break to recover, or to reduce the number of hours you have to work on your dissertation every day.

Extending your studies could involve making use of a resit deadline a few weeks after the official submission deadline. It could also involve extending your studies for one more semester to finish your dissertation.

Extending your studies is not a sign of failure. Many students do it! There are simply so many expectations and requirements packed into a degree that it is sometimes hard to complete within the allocated time.

Last but not least, don’t shy away from asking yourself the tough question: Is it worth it to push through to (try to) complete my dissertation, or would it be better to quit my programme?

This is of course a tough decision to make. However, if you feel like your dissertation is killing you, consider this option.

Nothing, and I repeat, NOTHING is more important than your health and well-being. Also not your dissertation.

Ten things I wish I'd known before starting my dissertation

The sun is shining but many students won't see the daylight. Because it's that time of year again – dissertation time.

Luckily for me, my D-Day (dissertation hand-in day) has already been and gone. But I remember it well.

The 10,000-word spiral-bound paper squatted on my desk in various forms of completion was my Allied forces; the history department in-tray was my Normandy. And when Eisenhower talked about a "great crusade toward which we have striven these many months", he was bang on.

I remember first encountering the Undergraduate Dissertation Handbook, feeling my heart sink at how long the massive file took to download, and began to think about possible (but in hindsight, wildly over-ambitious) topics. Here's what I've learned since, and wish I'd known back then…

1 ) If your dissertation supervisor isn't right, change. Mine was brilliant. If you don't feel like they're giving you the right advice, request to swap to someone else – providing it's early on and your reason is valid, your department shouldn't have a problem with it. In my experience, it doesn't matter too much whether they're an expert on your topic. What counts is whether they're approachable, reliable, reassuring, give detailed feedback and don't mind the odd panicked email. They are your lifeline and your best chance of success.

2 ) If you mention working on your dissertation to family, friends or near-strangers, they will ask you what it's about, and they will be expecting a more impressive answer than you can give. So prepare for looks of confusion and disappointment. People anticipate grandeur in history dissertation topics – war, genocide, the formation of modern society. They don't think much of researching an obscure piece of 1970s disability legislation. But they're not the ones marking it.

3 ) If they ask follow-up questions, they're probably just being polite.

4 ) Do not ask friends how much work they've done. You'll end up paranoid – or they will. Either way, you don't have time for it.

5 ) There will be one day during the process when you will freak out, doubt your entire thesis and decide to start again from scratch. You might even come up with a new question and start working on it, depending on how long the breakdown lasts. You will at some point run out of steam and collapse in an exhausted, tear-stained heap. But unless there are serious flaws in your work (unlikely) and your supervisor recommends starting again (highly unlikely), don't do it. It's just panic, it'll pass.

6 ) A lot of the work you do will not make it into your dissertation. The first few days in archives, I felt like everything I was unearthing was a gem, and when I sat down to write, it seemed as if it was all gold. But a brutal editing down to the word count has left much of that early material at the wayside.

7 ) You will print like you have never printed before. If you're using a university or library printer, it will start to affect your weekly budget in a big way. If you're printing from your room, "paper jam" will come to be the most dreaded two words in the English language.

8 ) Your dissertation will interfere with whatever else you have going on – a social life, sporting commitments, societies, other essay demands. Don't even try and give up biscuits for Lent, they'll basically become their own food group when you're too busy to cook and desperate for sugar.

9 ) Your time is not your own. Even if you're super-organised, plan your time down to the last hour and don't have a single moment of deadline panic, you'll still find that thoughts of your dissertation will creep up on you when you least expect it. You'll fall asleep thinking about it, dream about it and wake up thinking about. You'll feel guilty when you're not working on it, and mired in self-doubt when you are.

10 ) Finishing it will be one of the best things you've ever done. It's worth the hard work to know you've completed what's likely to be your biggest, most important, single piece of work. Be proud of it.

It’s common to hear people complain that their job is “killing” them or claim that the drudgery of their jobs “sucks the lifeblood” out of them, leaving them exhausted, depressed , and lethargic by the end of the work week. According to recent research by Jeffrey Pfeffer, Ph.D. of the Stanford Graduate School of Business, certain types of workplace conditions may actually result in premature death. In his 2018 book entitled Dying for a Paycheck: How Modern Management Harms Employee Health and Company Performance—and What We Can Do About It , Pfeffer reports on his meta-analysis research which examined the types of workplace and work-related characteristics that contribute to early death and other health and mental health problems.

Pfeffer enumerates ten work-related factors that can impact health and longevity (Pfeffer 2018, p. 43):

  • Being unemployed sometimes as a result of a layoff.
  • Not having health insurance.
  • Working shifts and also working longer periods, e.g., ten or twelve-hours shifts.
  • Working long hours in a week (e.g., more than 40 hours per week).
  • Job insecurity (resulting from colleagues being laid off or fired).
  • Facing family-to-work and work-to-family spillover or conflict.
  • Having relatively low control over one’s job e.g., workload.
  • Facing high work demands such as pressure to increase productivity and to work quickly.
  • Being in a work environment that offers low levels of social support (e.g., not having close relationships with co-workers.
  • Working in a setting in which job- and employment-related decisions seem unfair.

The impact of these work stressors can be as “harmful as secondhand smoke” according to Pfeffer’s research on health and mental health effects.

Stress researchers have well documented how stress (whether it be work stress or personal stress) results in increased levels of cortisol in our blood and cortisol is associated with many types of physical ailments (e.g., cardiac problems like hypertension or certain types of cancer). So when Jeffrey Pfeffer says that work stress can lead you to an early grave, he’s not kidding. And he has the data to back it up. I witnessed this anecdotally when a co-worker of mine was being stalked by a former disgruntled student. The student had even gone to such lengths as to find out where my co-worker's daughter attended school and posted pictures of the daughter. Things had gotten so bad that the police had to intervene. Several months later, my co-worker developed breast cancer. She had been in excellent health up to the time when the student began stalking her. While we can't know if there was a causal link between her stress and illness, and there were likely other etiological factors in addition to the stress created by stalking, it is also well-accepted that cortisol generally impacts one’s physical health negatively.

I highly recommend that you read Jeffrey Pfeffer’s book. It is thorough, thoughtful, and well-researched. He provides many important strategies for how employees can take back control over their own health and mental health and discusses what factors help to make for healthy workplaces.
