India has been under British rule for almost 200 years. Every Indian's existence during British colonialism was miserable and filled with hardship. Indians had little freedom of speech and were treated like slaves. Indian leaders were merely British commanders' puppets. Farmers were starving because they couldn't grow crops and had to pay high land fees, while Indian fighters were oppressed in British camps.

The Indian people honour the selfless efforts and unmatched achievements of great men and women who helped India attain its independence on this special day. Everyone in the nation pays respectful homage to leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose , Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad, Sardar Patel, and Gopalbandhu Das .

Greatest Indian Independence Warriors

Without the tireless efforts of several heroic freedom warriors, India would not have achieved independence. Some well-known figures are Bhagat Singh, the Rani of Jhansi, Chandra Shekhar Azad, Subhas Chandra Bose, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Ram Prasad Bismil, and Ashfaqulla Khan.

Women's Contribution

The Indian liberation movement has seen essential contributions from several women. Some important names to remember include Savitribai Phule, Mahadevi Verma, and Capt. Laxmi Sehgal, Rani Laxmibai, and Basanti Devi. These women and many others were instrumental in guiding India toward freedom.

Activities On Independence Day

Everywhere in the nation, people rejoice greatly on Independence Day. Meetings are held, the tricolour flag is flown, and the National Anthem is sung. Everyone is quite enthusiastic. This day is honoured in the nation's capital, Delhi, with a lot of fanfare. On the parade area in front of the Red Fort, all leaders and commoners assemble in vast numbers to await the arrival of the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister hoists the National Flag , after which he delivers a speech highlighting the government's accomplishments over the previous year, identifies the problems that still need to be solved, and encourages further progress.

Before raising the flag, students march in parades and sing the national anthem. Some historic structures have been specially adorned with lights that represent the notion of freedom. Read Short Welcome Speech for Independence Day 2023

Indian Independence Day is one of those occasions which calls for a welcome speech because we as Indians celebrate this day as a festival. After 200 years of slavery under the British Empire, it was on August 15, 1947 that India became an independent nation.  This year marks the 77th year of India’s independence, which is being celebrated with zeal across the country as ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav 2023.’

After many years of struggles, where our freedom fighters were hanged, imprisoned, and tortured, we could see the light of the day. On this day, schools across the nation honour their legacy and sacrifices by conducting the program. This can be presented as a long welcome speech for Independence Day or a short welcome speech for Independence Day.

Indian Independence Day 2023

“At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India shall awaken to freedom.” With these golden words of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India claimed her rightful independence on 15th August 1947 after almost 200 years of British Raj.

India’s freedom was the result of years of struggle against British Imperialism which was fought by our freedom fighters, many of whom gave their lives for the nation so that their future generations could live in a free country. Several prominent leaders and revolutionaries come to mind when we talk about the freedom movement, including Jawaharlal Nehru, who became our first Prime Minister, Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhai Patel, Subhash Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh and many more.

We should always remember and cherish this freedom that we struggled for so long and at the end of a long road, we finally achieved our rightful position as a sovereign nation.

The Meaning of Independence for India

While the Independence of India was a glorious event in the country’s history, it was also a very painful one. Independence came with the condition of partition, two dominions of India and Pakistan were created and people who had lived together for centuries were divided from each other. This shall always teach us that freedom is not free and the price of freedom is eternal vigilance.

When we became independent, India was an extremely backward country with more than 75 percent of our population living in poverty, and food shortages, famines and illiteracy was rampant. We took an oath to make our nation one of the most advanced nations of the world and have been on that mission for the last eight decades.

Quotes on Indian Independence Day

"Freedom in mind, faith in our hearts, memories in our souls. Let's salute the Nation on Independence Day!" - Unknown

"Freedom is never dear at any price. It is the breath of life. What would a man not pay for living?" - Mahatma Gandhi

"Let new India arise out of peasants' cottage, grasping the plough, out of huts, cobbler and sweeper." - Swami Vivekananda

"One individual may die for an idea, but that idea will, after his death, incarnate itself in a thousand lives." - Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose

"Even if I died in the service of the nation, I would be proud of it. Every drop of my blood... will contribute to the growth of this nation and make it strong and dynamic." - Indira Gandhi

This year India is celebrating its 77th Indian Independence Day 2023 and it is a time when the entire nation should come together as one to celebrate our journey till now and march to an even glorious future where we create a better India so that our progeny can be proud of ourselves.

Students can use this welcome speech in English for Independence Day celebration 2023 in their schools and deliver a great speech to begin the auspicious day.

Every year the people of India celebrate the day when they broke free from years of oppression under the British Empire, as Independence Day. It is observed on 15th august as the country gained independence on 15th August 1947.

Observation before Independence

Though India gained independence on 15th August 1947, few of us know that an Independence Day was also observed by the people of India and politicians, before the country gained actual independence.

It all began with the demand for Purna Swaraj or total independence during the 1929 Lahore session of the Indian National Congress. With the signing of “The Declaration of the Independence of India”, during the session, 26th January 1930 was projected to be observed as Independence Day.

The Congress party observed Independence Day on 26th January from 1930 to 1947; though, the celebrations were completely different from what we see today. Then, meetings were held and people were issued instructions on the next move against the British. The main objective of Independence Day before Independence was to instill a feeling of nationalism in Indians to give more strength to the freedom struggle.

Events throughout the Country

The whole country celebrates Independence Day as a national holiday and with unmatchable zeal and devotion. Indians love their country and have immense respect for their freedom fighters that have fought for Independence.

Indian National Flag, the Tricolor is hoisted in every government, non-government offices, schools, colleges and also in market places. There is no restriction on the display of flag unless it violates the Flag Code of India.

School children could be seen marching to the tune of a band playing the national anthem. Parades by the police and paramilitary personnel are also held at district headquarters and police grounds.

In the state capitals, the Chief Minister and the Governor hoist the national flag in their respective offices. The national capital Delhi is at the focal point of the Independence Day celebrations. The serving Prime Minister of India takes guard of honor from the forces after hoisting the flag from Red Fort. Then he addresses the people of the nation and informs them about the strategy and achievements of the government.

Independence Day is the most significant festival in India. It is among the very few festivals that are celebrated by every religious community of India, with the same joy and enthusiasm. It is the day of immense pride for the people of India.

Essay 3 (500 – 600 Words) – Independence Day Essay

15th August is celebrated in India as Independence Day. On this day in 1947, India gained independence from nearly two hundred years of British imperialism. It was both a moment of immense pride and joy for the people of India. Thus, they celebrate Independence Day with religious fervor and enthusiasm.

India Under Colonial Rule – History

India was a group of large and small princely states and kingdoms in the 17th century. Most of the states were wealthy and self-sufficient. Then, the European traders came through the sea route. They gained the confidence of Indian rulers and established a firm hold over the land and trade. Slowly their trading policies became self-centered.

In the mid of 1700s, the interest of British East India Company changed from trading to territorial. It started forcibly subdue kingdoms using military strength. Small kingdoms of India fought for their independence but were no match to the experience and ammunitions of the Company.

The first struggle of a united India against British oppression was the Revolt of 1857. It began as a sepoy mutiny in Meerut which quickly spread to other parts of the country. However, the British were able to curb it in time, taking advantage of the lack of leadership on the Indian side.

Rise of Nationalism and the Call for Swaraj

Even the British were able to contain the revolt; the seeds of nationalism and patriotism were sown in the minds of Indians. Revolt of 1857 did a crucial role in uniting India and bringing the realization to its people that Independence can be won if the country fights united.

Civic societies started emerging throughout India, like the Indian National Congress Party that was formed in 1855, almost three decades after the revolt. Parties and their political patrons did the most important job of uniting India with a single thread of nationalism.

Montagu-Chelmsford Reform, Rowlatt Act, Jallianwala Bagh Massacre, Swadeshi movement, non-cooperation movement, salt march all stand testimony to the oppression of Indian people and their fight against it. This was also the time when India started demanding Swaraj or total independence from the British.

Finally, with the efforts of freedom fighters like Bhagat Singh, Chandrasekhar Azad, Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Lala Lajpat Rai, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, and others, India finally gained independence on 15th August 1947.

Celebration of Independence Day in India

Independence Day is observed as a national holiday in India. Most of the offices, either government or private and schools, colleges are closed except for the celebrations.

The country displays the same unity in celebrating Independence Day as it had displayed in the fight for independence. People from different walks of life and from various religious and cultural background celebrate with unparalleled nationalism and patriotism.

Indian national flag, the Tricolor is sold everywhere and people pridefully adorn it on their desks, vehicles and buildings. Flag hoisting is a mandatory event in all the government offices, wherein the head of the office hoist the flag followed by the singing of national anthem – “Jana Gana Mana…”.

Schools and colleges also organize several events in the honor of our freedom fighters and the hardship they went through to gain independence. Children could be seen dressed up as some popular freedom fighters and enacting their famous dialogues, quotes, etc.

The Prime Minister of India also addresses the nation after a flag hoisting ceremony from Red Fort in New Delhi.

Independence Day is the birth of an independent India in which its people could chose for their own fate and decide their own governance. It is an essential day and in fact the most important festival of the people of India.

Key Points to Remember When Writing an Essay on Independence Day

5 lines on independence day, 10 lines on independence day, short paragraph on independence day, long essay on independence day, independence day activities for kids to make their day special, interesting facts about india’s independence day, what will your child learn from the ‘independence day’ essay.

Independence Day is a historic moment for any nation. It is the day the country celebrates its freedom from foreign rule and honours the freedom fighters who struggled for independence. Students of classes 1, 2 and 3 are asked to write an essay on Independence day as part of a school assignment or for a competition. It is an important topic that makes children proud of their country’s history and national leaders.

Children of lower primary classes may find this topic somewhat challenging, as it involves learning and memorising some facts and penning them down in their own words. Here we guide them on how to write on this topic with a few sample essays for classes 1, 2 and 3.

Writing is a skill that takes time and practice to develop. Starting with a simple topic and building your way up is the best way to become proficient. Here are some tips for essay writing on independence day:

  • Before you start writing, consider the word count and essay format. You can begin by writing essays in the form of separate facts in simple lines. Writing a paragraph can be more complicated and requires structuring the narrative.
  • Gather all the facts about independence day and plan the order you want to write them.
  • You can start with the history of independence day and talk about how you celebrate it in school or home.
  • Avoid emphasising any point when the word count is small. Keep the essay general.

Younger children of class 1 are expected to write an essay with simple facts broken up into several lines. Here is how to write an independence day essay for class 1 in 5 lines:

  • Independence day is celebrated on August 15 every year.
  • Independence day is a national holiday for everyone.
  • It celebrates our country’s freedom after a long struggle and sacrifice.
  • It reminds us of the struggle and bravery of our freedom fighters.
  • We celebrate Independence Day by hoisting the flag and singing the national anthem.

An assignment with a slightly higher challenge for class 1 kids would be an essay on independence day in 100 words. Here is how to write it in 10 lines:

  • India celebrates Independence Day on August 15 every year.
  • India got freedom from British rule on August 15, 1947.
  • On this day, we honour the sacrifice of our freedom fighters.
  • The whole nation celebrates independence by hoisting the national flag.
  • Independence Day is an important national holiday for our country.
  • We have a holiday, but we go to school to attend the flag hoisting ceremony.
  • We sing the national anthem and raise a salute to the tricolour.
  • After celebrating Independence Day at school, we go home and watch the national parade that takes place in the Capital city, on television.
  • Independence Day is also a celebration of our country’s diverse cultures.
  • People show their love for the country by singing patriotic songs, displaying the flag.
  • Schools and housing societies hold cultural events for Independence Day.

As children grow, they are ready for a more challenging assignment. They are expected to write a short essay in the form of a small paragraph. Here is how to write this essay on Independence Day in 150 words:

India celebrates Independence Day on August 15. It is the day we remember the sacrifices made by the brave freedom fighters who struggled for our independence. India got freedom from British rule on this day in 1947. In honour of this day, there is a grand cultural event in the capital city, New Delhi.

The celebrations start with the flag hoisting ceremony and honouring the sacrifice of those who lost their lives in the freedom struggle.

Our colony organises a programme on this day where we dress up in the colours of our flags and perform songs and dances on the stage.

Long essays that are over 300-words-long need some advanced writing skills. Children need to weave facts into a good narrative to make the essay appealing. Here is an example of an essay on Independence Day for class 3:

India got independence on August 15, 1947, after 200 years of British rule. The first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, hoisted the Indian flag at the Red Fort for the first time to celebrate the country’s freedom. Under British colonial rule, India had struggled for decades. The freedom fighters fought against the British rulers, sacrificing their lives for a noble cause.

Independence day is celebrated every year to commemorate the events of the freedom struggle. On this day, we celebrate the rich diversity of our country, and the unity we have among all Indians. The unity of the freedom fighters from all over the country inspires us to live in harmony.

On Independence Day, there are celebrations across the country. People and communities come together to host the national flag and pledge allegiance to it. The country’s largest celebration takes place in the capital, New Delhi. Schools, too, have a special celebration where students sing patriotic songs and attend the flag hoisting ceremony.

History of Independence Day

The British have controlled India for nearly 200 years. During British rule, the people's lives were miserable. Indians were treated as slaves and were not allowed to communicate with them. Indian monarchs were nothing more than puppets in the hands of British officers. Indian soldiers were treated inhumanely in British barracks, while farmers starved to death because they couldn't grow food and had to pay enormous land taxes. Our freedom soldiers battled for the independence of India. Mahatma Gandhi, Subhash Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Jawaharlal Nehru, Mangal Pandey, and Dada Bhai Naoroji were among the famous leaders who heroically battled the British. Many of them perished to liberate India from British domination. Their achievements and efforts are honored in India's freedom.

1000 Words Essay on Independence Day

Rise of Nationalism

Even the British were unable to quell the rebellion, but the seeds of nationalism and patriotism were sown in the minds of Indians. The Revolt of 1857 played a critical part in uniting India and convincing its people that independence can be attained if the country fought together. Civic societies began to emerge across India, such as the Indian National Congress Party, which was founded in 1855, over three decades after the revolution. The most crucial role in connecting India with a common thread of nationalism was played by political parties and their political sponsors. Finally, on August 15, 1947, India attained independence thanks to the efforts of liberation warriors such as Bhagat Singh, Chandrasekhar Azad, Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Lala Lajpat Rai, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, and others.

(Independence Day is celebrated)

(Why Celebrate Independence Day)

(Meaning of Freedom)

(Importance of Independence Day)

Indian Independence Day 2024 Paragraph Kids & Students In Hindi

speech on independence day in hindi pdf -:

Speech & essay on independence day in hindi 200 words Pdf 2024

15 August 2024 Short Essay For Students

An Introduction to Yoga

Yoga is the ancient way to attain physical, mental, and spiritual practice. Primarily originating in India, the word 'yoga' is derived from Sanskrit, meaning to unite. This unity signifies the ultimate union of the body with consciousness and thus attaining definitive peace.

Recognizing the universal appeal of Yoga, on December 11 2014, the United Nations proclaimed June 21 to be marked as the International Day of Yoga.

It was first started by our present Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi. He celebrated Yoga Day for the first time on June 21 in 2015, after which Yoga Day started being celebrated all over the world on June 15, and it turned into International Yoga Day. Since then, Yoga Day has been celebrated every year by the Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa-Rigpa and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) in India.

As per the calendar, this date is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and the shortest in the Southern Hemisphere. Also, from the Yoga's perspective, this summer solstice marks the transition to Dakshinayana. Dakshinayana is the six-month tenure for the sun to travel to the south on the celestial sphere in between the Summer and the Winter solstice.

In today's times, this is practised in various forms across different parts of the world and is growing more and more popular. The main aim of celebrating International Day of Yoga is to raise awareness of the multitude of benefits of Yoga. However, Yoga is much more than just a mere physical activity.

As per one of the famous Yoga practitioners, late B. K. S. Iyengar, Yoga is the best way to cultivate and maintain a balanced attitude in daily life while bequeathing the best of performance skills in every action being made.

History of International Yoga Day

Yoga is a centuries-old practice that originated somewhere around 5,000 years ago in India. This was looked up as a process and technique to interconnect the mind, body and soul together and take a step closer to enlightenment. As this practice gained popularity in the West, this started to be termed an exercise and relaxation method. This was also associated with the claims to alleviate any existing physical injuries and chronic pains.

The idea to mark June 21 as International Yoga Day was first proposed by India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 27, 2014. It was during his UN General Assembly speech where the resolution was introduced by India's Ambassador, Asoke Kumar Mukerji, to June 21 as International Yoga Day.

On June 21, 2015, i.e., when this day was first celebrated, more than 36,000 people from all over India joined Prime Minister Modi to perform 21 yoga postures, also called asanas, for 35 minutes at Rajpath, New Delhi. Shri Narendra Modi was further joined by other high-profile political and famous leaders across the globe.

In his speech given in the UN, the current Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, gave the idea of making International Yoga important.

He said in his speech," Yoga is an invaluable gift of India's ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but discovering the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and nature. Changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness can help in well-being. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day."

With this, the UN Assembly accepted this proposal and decided to celebrate International Yoga Day on June 21 every year. Also, there are several exercises being organized in the schools like writing International Yoga Day Essays for students in English and other vernacular languages.

Significance of Yoga

Shiva, also known as Adiyogi, is considered the originator and creator of Yoga. This was further brought to the masses by the Saptarishis. As per the Indian mythological story, Shiva sat in a meditating position for years. Then, seven people were impressed by his level of determination, so they decided to learn from him, and they sat still for more than 84 years.
