UCLA International Institute Logo

The UCLA International Institute educates students, supports scholarship on the world at UCLA and serves as a campus and community resource. With a history dating back to 1958, the Institute is the central hub for global and area studies on campus. Its more than 27 centers and programs support innovative multidisciplinary research on specific world regions and pressing global issues. Its rigorous academic programs offer degrees in global studies, international development, global health, international migration and diverse regions and countries of the world.

Academic Programs: Global and Area Studies. The International Institute’s wide variety of interdisciplinary academic programs offer six undergraduate majors, ten undergraduate minors and three master’s degree programs. Together, they enroll nearly 1,000 students each year. UCLA International Institute alumni — some of whom go on to pursue advanced research and professional degrees — work in the education, government, cultural, nonprofit and business sectors of countries all over the world. The internationally renowned faculty who serve as directors of the Institute's centers — and as chairs and teaching faculty in its academic programs — hold appointments throughout UCLA’s College of Letters and Science and professional schools. Many faculty further enrich the Institute’s global and regional course offerings by leading travel study and education abroad programs. To sustain the expertise that makes UCLA a leader in scholarship on the world, the International Institute actively recruits and helps fund faculty who specialize in international studies. The Institute also supports advanced language classes and courses on specific world regions and topics. In addition, each of its individual centers sustains a network of research scholars across the campus, the nation and the globe. Research on the World. Both the UCLA International Institute and its centers support cutting-edge research via graduate student fellowships; language study scholarships; faculty grants; and funding for conferences, publications and multidisciplinary research projects. On campus, the Institute is uniquely positioned to bring together varied departments and centers to foster collaborative research and debate on issues such as climate change, public health threats, international conflicts and migration. Initiatives spearheaded by the UCLA International Institute have included conferences and workshops on a wide variety of global topics such as migration, water conservation and management in different world regions, Sinitic Buddhism, the role of religion in Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the history of the left in twentieth-century Mexico, minorities in the Middle East and the challenge of medical interventions among indigenous populations in Central America.

Campus and Community Resource. Part of a leading public university in the global city of Los Angeles, the UCLA International Institute is also a first‐class resource for the city and its residents. The breadth and depth of its research interests make the International Institute a valuable partner to its home city. The multiethnic population and economic interests of Los Angeles connect it closely to the countries of the Pacific Rim and Latin America, as well as those of the Middle East, Africa and Europe. The Institute reaches this greater LA community and the campus through roughly 250 annual public lectures, symposia, conferences and cultural events — the vast majority of which are free of charge.

Recent events sponsored by the Institute’s individual centers have addressed the war in Ukraine; the Armenian Genocide; the end of the U.S. war in Afghanistan; Afghan literature; the crisis of the Nile River Basin; the history and politics of modern-day Colombia, Brazil and Mexico; Israeli history and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; the complicated identities of immigrants and refugees; pre-modern history in Southeast Asia; contemporay Chinese filmmakers and writers; popular culture in South Asia; and professional development workshops on Latin America for K–12 teachers.

About the Office

The UCLA Office of International Studies and Global Engagement, or the UCLA International Office, has a dual mandate: it champions the study of the world at UCLA and represents UCLA to the world.

Headed by the Vice Provost for International Studies and Global Engagement, the office is responsible for UCLA’s global strategy and engagement. The office manages UCLA’s partnership agreements with foreign institutions, represents UCLA to international constituencies and organizations, hosts foreign delegations and dignitaries, promotes international education and exchange on campus and oversees the UCLA International Institute.

Global Engagement. The Vice Provost for International Studies and Global Engagement functions as UCLA’s unofficial “secretary of state,” with a “diplomatic portfolio” that encompasses the many ways in which UCLA engages with the world. In consultation with faculty, departments and schools across campus, her office develops and implements UCLA’s global strategy and plays an important role in promoting and maintaining the UCLA global brand.

The International Office plans international trips for senior university leaders to strengthen and/or create research and education partnerships, recruit top-ranked students and faculty, cultivate supporters, strengthen and expand the UCLA global alumni community and fundraise on behalf of all UCLA divisions and professional schools. The Vice Provost works closely with the UCLA Europe Office in London.

In addition, the office actively builds UCLA’s global presence by supporting overseas networks of alumni and creating new strategic international programs. Among its innovations are networking and educational events that bring together Bruins, university partners and local leaders in countries around the world to discuss issues of local, regional and global concern.

The International Office also manages the university’s roughly 192 research, teaching and student exchange agreements with institutions in 47 countries and regions. It also represents UCLA in major global associations, such as the Association of International Education Administrators and the Association of Pacific Rim Universities, as well as at major international educational conferences.

The office facilitates requests to participate in international partnerships and initiatives and provides regional expertise and contacts to UC administrators and UCLA faculty upon request. And as a service to the university community, the International Office maintains the UCLA Global website : a one-stop online resource about the university’s international activities, faculty and students.

On campus, the International Office serves as UCLA’s gateway to the world, arranging campus visits of educational, cultural and political delegations. It regularly hosts senior foreign representatives, including heads of states, ambassadors and consuls general.

International Education. Given the increasingly interconnected nature of the world, international education is more important than ever. The UCLA International Office has a campus-wide vision to enable all UCLA students to graduate as globally proficient citizens. It works with the leadership of UCLA’s schools, divisions and professional schools to internationalize the UCLA curriculum to prepare our students to be successful global citizens in today’s complex world. A major priority of the Vice Provost is to help as many UCLA students as possible gain international experience and a global perspective in their field of study. She has been actively involved in fundraising for study abroad scholarships and graduate fellowships. Undergraduates may study abroad for a semester or an academic year, attend a summer travel study program or pursue an internationally oriented internship (for credit) with a business or nonprofit organization. They may also become fluent in a foreign language, learn about the cultures and histories of nations worldwide, forge friendships with international peers and participate in student organizations focused on global engagement. Graduate students must frequently achieve proficiency in foreign languages and conduct research in those languages in countries and regions worldwide. They may also participate in summer research exchanges in another country or take courses that give them the intercultural communication skills needed to work in global teams. The Vice Provost promotes study abroad and international internship programs and appoints the faculty director of the UCLA International Education Office (IEO). She also champions graduate fellowships, as well as the participation of international scholars in the activities of UCLA schools and divisions and campus life as a whole. The International Office, for example, hosts the Visiting Fulbright Scholar Enrichment Program for the Los Angeles metropolitan region and works closely with the UCLA Study Abroad/IEO and the Dashew Center for International Students and Scholars.

Each November, the Vice Provost organizes a high-profile, campus-wide event at UCLA: International Education Week (IEW). Held on college campuses nationwide throughout the United States, IEW is a weeklong celebration of international education and exchange. From student performances to an evening devoted to a Global Conversation, the week showcases UCLA’s considerable international education resources and brings together student associations and study abroad and international students to learn more about UCLA's degree programs in international studies and internationally oriented centers. The week is typically cosponsored by multiple schools, divisions and administrative offices of UCLA. UCLA International Institute

The UCLA International Institute is the “jewel in the crown” of international education at UCLA. It offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in international studies, promotes scholarship on the world’s diverse regions and serves as a campus and community resource. With a history dating back to 1958, the Institute houses more than 28 centers and programs that support innovative multidisciplinary research on specific world areas, as well as pressing global issues. Its rigorous academic programs in global studies, international development, global health, international migration, and country- and regionally oriented studies consistently attract excellent students. The Institute’s public events program — which offers roughly 250 public lectures, symposia, conferences and cultural events each academic year — gives both the UCLA campus and the global city of Los Angeles direct access to the latest research on global developments and world regions. The breadth and depth of its research interests make the International Institute a valuable partner to its home city. The institute has numerous links to Los Angeles, including close relationships with international organizations, businesses, Hollywood content creators and the many consulates general located in the city. The vice provost, for example, serves as an adviser to the nonprofit organization, Sister Cities of Los Angeles. Message from the Vice Provost

I am committed to UCLA’s global mission and humbled to be the first woman and person of color to serve as the university’s senior international officer (SIO). My appreciation for a global perspective began in childhood. Raised by parents who were farmers in rural China, I was born in Hong Kong and received a British colonial education. I feel incredibly fortunate to be the first in my family to have gone to college. Undergraduate geography field trips to the Philippines and Japan, followed by the culture shock of being a Ph.D. student in Ohio, allowed me to experience the transformative power of study abroad. My education and the benefits of international study have enabled me to become a Vice Provost at one of the world’s great public universities. Global developments of the past few years — including the COVID-19 pandemic, racial justice movements, growing social and economic inequities and increasing evidence of the impacts of climate change — have made UCLA’s global mission even more compelling. New courses on the political economy of climate change and economic development, international collaborations on risk reduction and resilience , together with recent webinar series on COVID-19 and the global dimensions of the Black Lives Matter movement , are some of the ways in which we are responding to these developments. At a time when nations throughout the world are facing problems that require global solutions, it is imperative that universities re-affirm their commitment to international collaboration Current VP Newsletter   in service of the common good. International research and academic exchange are vital to the intellectual vibrancy of universities in the U.S., long held to be the world leader in higher education. At UCLA, our global vision includes giving students opportunities to become globally proficient through study abroad and international experiences on campus. For Bruins to become effective leaders and productive global citizens able to work with their international peers to address our world’s complex challenges, it is critical that they have an informed understanding of the world and its contemporary concerns and challenges.

International exchange also greatly enriches faculty, staff and communities. International scholars and students are among the top talents in this country — individuals who have contributed to advancing science, the humanities, arts, social sciences and above all, a global perspective that is essential for the U.S. to remain competitive in the world. UCLA’s responses to U.S. visa rule changes and restrictions have repeatedly affirmed this enduring reality. Located in the global city of Los Angeles and at the gateway to Latin America and the Asia Pacific, UCLA’s global mission enriches and is in turn enriched by the diverse diaspora communities in our city, region and state, for whom my office is a natural first point of contact on campus. At the International Institute, we champion international education and facilitate international exchange and civic engagement in our classrooms, the greater Los Angeles community and the world. I invite you to join me and my team in advancing research on burning questions of the world, inspiring our students to gain global experience and providing them the means to do so, and continuing to forge partnerships across disciplines, borders and continents (see video below). Message to UCLA Students

January 2021. The UCLA International Institute welcomes its students, staff and faculty to winter quarter 2021 at UCLA. The rollout of the first vaccines against Covid-19 late last year was heartening news after a very challenging year. It will take many more months before the virus has been contained across this country and the world, but there is indeed light at the end of the tunnel. In the meantime, public health precautions remain in place on campus, most students will attend classes remotely and most faculty and staff will continue working from home during winter quarter. We urge you to continue to observe campus-mandated public health precautions and regularly consult the UCLA Covid-19 information page . The virus remains as dangerous as it has been, so please continue to take precautions and follow public health protocols. We must all continue to wear masks, maintain our physical distance from one another, avoid large gatherings (especially indoors) and frequently wash our hands. But at least we can do so knowing that science has turned a corner in its battle with Covid-19. And please don’t hesitate to reach out for help whenever you need it: links to many UCLA support services can be found on the information page. The International Institute salutes our students, staff and faculty for their patience, persistence and endurance. Institute leadership misses seeing you at the beautiful UCLA campus and the local residents who regularly attend our public events. We look forward to seeing all of you in person when the campus re-opens. Take care, have a great winter quarter, and Happy New Year!

UCLA Economics

About the Ph.D. Program

APP 2016 presentations.

The Ph.D. Program in Economics at UCLA prepares students for careers as economists in academia, business and government. The program combines rigorous work in economic theory and careful study of real-world problems and institutions. Graduates from this program work at major universities around the world, national and international government agencies, banks, research centers and in private businesses. Some of our graduates have achieved great prominence, such as William Sharpe , who earned both his B.A. and Ph.D. degrees at UCLA, and was co-recipient of the 1990 Nobel Prize in Economics for his work on the capital asset pricing model.

The department includes internationally recognized scholars in economic theory, econometrics, and all the major applied fields. These outstanding scholars form one of the foremost departments of economics in the world.

The Economics Department is situated within one of the world’s most youthful and vibrant universities. Founded in 1919, UCLA first developed into a major university in the 1950’s. After so short a history, the university was ranked second in the United States among public research universities by the Conference Board of Associated Research Councils in 1982. Thirty-one of its Ph.D. programs are currently ranked in the top 20 in their field–third best in the nation.

The Ph.D. is the degree objective of the graduate program. This degree is awarded to students who demonstrate professional competence by passing written qualifying exams and by completing a major piece of individual research (the Ph.D. dissertation).

Preparation for the qualifying exams through coursework and independent study occupies most student time for the first two years. Thereafter the focus shifts to independent research and finally to the writing of a Ph.D. dissertation. Research in progress by our graduate students as well as our faculty is presented at workshops that meet weekly throughout the academic year. Currently, the Dept. has workshops in Theory and Mathematical Economics, International and Development Economics, Labor and Population Economics, Business Organization and Regulation Economics, Economic History, Econometrics, and Monetary Theory. In addition, many graduate students work as research or teaching assistants for faculty members. The normal time to degree is six years.

This degree program classifies as STEM (CIP Code 45.0603: Econometrics and Quantitative Economics).

Remembering Professor Kirstie McClure

In Memoriam Prof. Kirstie McClure (July 15, 1951 – December 21, 2023)

It is with much sadness that I share with you the news that UCLA’s Prof. Kirstie McClure has passed away of coronary disease.

Prof. McClure was a formidable colleague and friend to many of us who will no doubt remember her with fond trepidation for her critical energies, her brilliance, her encyclopedic knowledge of the history of political thought, and her refusal to leave a thought unfinished. Her contributions to political theory, the history of political thought, feminist theory, and critical political theory were many, both published, institutional, and as a mentor to innumerable students and scholars currently teaching throughout the world.

UCLA Political Science Graduate named dean of UCLA School of Law

Message from the chair.

Welcome to UCLA Political Science

Political Science is the study of how humans relate to one another and the systems of power and institutions of rule we construct in order to arrange our collective lives. These institutions can be formal like electoral systems, or international courts, or the various branches of governmental power; but they can also be informal and include the cultural practices of diverse ethnic groups, the public contestation of beliefs and values, and everyday forms of collective participation ranging from sporting activities, to political activism, to digital networking and beyond. What these diverse expressions of political activity share is an acknowledgment of the fact that we are many and that in order for the many to live peacefully with one another we must innovate ways to negotiate forms of power. It was Aristotle who in his Politics famously declared that humans are “by nature a political animal.” As Political Scientists we hope to understand how humans are political animals, as well as the diverse historical and contemporary ways that we express our political lives.

UCLA Doctoral Graduates at a Grad Student Reception

COMPLETE COURSEWORK AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Doctoral programs vary widely in the number of required courses as well as additional requirements. Most programs use the first year to prepare students for their chosen field. Some programs conduct an end-of-the-year exam for each first-year cohort, while others evaluate student by courses, papers, and projects completed in that first year. In addition to being assigned a Student Affairs Officer (SAO) by your program, you’ll also mutually choose your Faculty Advisor. Generally this is a natural process where a student’s and a faculty member’s interests and areas of specialization align. This relationship is an important one, which lasts well beyond a student’s tenure at UCLA. In your first year, you’ll take courses with a wide variety of faculty and make lasting friendships with your cohort.

FIND FORMS FOR DOCTORAL STUDENTS

We’ve assembled all UCLA-wide forms that may be useful to a graduate student on a Master’s track in one place:  Forms for UCLA Doctoral Students . Your specific program may provide additional forms for your use. Here are some of the most common.

  • Language Petition
  • Nomination of Doctoral Committee
  • Reconstitution of Doctoral Committee
  • Graduate Degree Petition
  • Leave of Absence
  • In Absentia

KNOW YOUR PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

To keep on track, a Doctoral student must meet specific requirements for a student’s program.

Type the name of your program to jump straight to its requirements:

Your Program Requirements cover most things a current student needs to know in order to graduate on time.  Our FAQs  answers a few common questions about program requirements. Any outstanding questions can be answered by your program through their website or from your Student Affairs Officer (SAO).

If your program offers a Master’s Degree along the path toward a Doctorate, you’ll be required to initiate a specialized process and meet criteria specific to your program.

NOMINATE YOUR DOCTORAL COMMITTEE

During your second or third year, you’ll begin assembling (nominating) your Doctoral Committee. Your committee is comprised of 4 or more faculty members (3 or more faculty members for professional (non-Ph.D.) doctoral committees) who are experts in your field who can guide you in your research. Some committee members will be on-campus while a few may be located at another academic institution. All committee members will be responsible for reviewing your work periodically, advising you on your direction and independent research, assessing your university oral qualifying exam, and approving your dissertation.

On occasion, your committee will fall out of compliance, in which case you’ll be required to  reconstitute your Doctoral committee . Common reasons include when one of your committee members leaves her or his post at UCLA or when you or a current committee member decides that you’ll benefit more by working with a different faculty member.

For more about your doctoral committee, see the Graduate Council’s guide  Graduate Student Academic Rights and Responsibilities  and  Standards and Procedures for Graduate Study at UCLA .

  • Minimum Standards for Doctoral Committee Constitution
  • Professional (Non-Ph.D.) Doctoral Committee Policy
  • Nomination of Doctoral Committee
  • Reconstitution of the Doctoral Committee and/or Change in Final Oral Examination Requirement

ADVANCEMENT TO CANDIDACY

Becoming a doctoral degree candidate is not a given. The first phase of your doctoral program is supervised by a faculty advisor or guidance committee. Your program will administer the written, and in some cases the program’s oral qualifying, exam after you complete courses and other preparatory work recommended or required by your program

Your doctoral committee may also require additional written exams. Only upon satisfactory completion of the written and oral qualifying requirements may you advance to candidacy. A student must also have met language requirements for advancement. This accomplishment generally happens between your second and fourth year.

CONTINUE PROGRESS TOWARD YOUR DOCTORAL DEGREE

ucla-prestige-medical-nursing-2

With the guidance of your Doctoral Committee, you’ll conduct fieldwork, research, writing, and independent study all the way up through your dissertation.

While you’re completing your degree, keep an eye on your future. Be sure to participate in the great career and professional development events and resources at UCLA.

DEFENDING YOUR DISSERTATION

Some programs require you to present your dissertation to your doctoral committee in a time-honored event called the final oral examination (or final defense). To find out if your program has this requirement, consult your program requirements for the year you were admitted (see KNOW YOUR PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS above).

ucla-prestige-space-4

FILE YOUR DISSERTATION

You will complete an approved doctoral dissertation that demonstrates your ability to perform original, independent research and constitutes a distinct contribution to knowledge in your principal field of study.

CELEBRATE YOUR GRADUATION

Doctoral Degrees are awarded four times a year, and are integrated into a single commencement—called the Doctoral Hooding Ceremony—held once each year at the beginning of June.  UCLA Graduate Commencement for Doctoral Students  is where you’ll find info about tickets, locations, schedule, parking, and dress code (including caps and gowns). Breaking down borders: ASU grad learns importance of international trade for global economy

Humberto Camacho received the Undergraduate Barton Kyle Yount Award. This award is presented to a student who best represents the values and standards envisioned by the founders of Thunderbird in 1946 and is the school’s highest student honor.

Humberto Camacho received the Undergraduate Barton Kyle Yount Award. This award is presented to a student who best represents the values and standards envisioned by the founders of Thunderbird in 1946 and is the school’s highest student honor.

Editor's note:  This story is part of a series of profiles of notable spring 2024 graduates.

Humberto Camacho was born and raised in the border town of Nogales, Arizona. As a Mexican American and bilingual speaker, he always knew he wanted to pursue a degree that would enable him to make a meaningful contribution to U.S.-Mexico relations and global cooperation.

Camacho will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in International Trade  from the  Thunderbird School of Global Management at Arizona State University. He believes that the synergy between ASU and Thunderbird was the perfect environment for him to study and equip himself with the tools necessary to make a lasting, positive impact on the world.

"I have always had a global mindset and wanted to make a difference, starting with my community. ASU prides itself on who it includes, rather than who it excludes, and is dedicated to tackling society's most significant challenges. Similarly, Thunderbird's vision is to promote sustainable and inclusive prosperity worldwide. I learned from that language, culture, or location are not barriers for like-minded individuals who want to make a global, positive impact on the world,” he said.

Currently, Camacho is interning with the Attorney General Alliance Partnership, a cooperative program that strengthens the U.S. and Mexico legal systems. He also works as a supplemental instruction leader at Thunderbird, assisting students in understanding complex concepts in accounting and finance courses. After graduation, Camacho aspires to explore international relations and supply chain realms, poised to make a tangible difference on a global scale.

Looking toward the future, Camacho shared that he takes life one step at a time and has learned to fall in love with the journey, not the destination.

"I wake up every day trying to be a better person in all areas of my life: personally, professionally, academically, athletically, socially, emotionally, etc. Even if I get just 1% better every day, sustained long-term growth will inevitably lead to success. You can't change the world overnight, so start by changing and improving yourself," he said.

Camacho is the recipient of the Spring 2024 Barton Kyle Yount Undergraduate Student Award. This award, presented to a student who best represents the values and standards envisioned by the founders of Thunderbird in 1946, is the school’s highest student honor.

Camacho said his advice to incoming Thunderbird students is to “seize every moment, embrace the journey, and invest in relationships.” He encourages them to cherish the unique experience and strive for personal growth.

Question: What has your experience at Thunderbird been like?

Answer: My experience has been nothing short of amazing. Not only have I learned so much about being a successful global manager and leader, but I have also built lasting relations with peers and professors whom I am happy to call my friends and mentors.

Which professor taught you the most important lesson while at Thunderbird?

Answer: I can not choose one professor since every professor here has taught me invaluable lessons in academia and the real world. One of the most important lessons learned was that those who succeed can adapt to change and seize emerging opportunities, especially in the rapidly evolving world we live in now.

Question: What is your favorite story from your time at Thunderbird?

Answer: Again, I have so many great memories from Thunderbird, but one that stands out is my group project for our Global Marketing class. It was one of my first-ever group projects at  Thunderbird. I remember how amazing it was to work with peers from different countries, sharing unique, creative perspectives, approaches, and solutions to the project. After we delivered our final presentation, I worked with a team of international consultants.

Question: What would you tackle if someone gave you $40 million to solve one problem on our planet?

Answer: I would work to solve the lack of education in developing countries. While I could not completely solve this problem, I would significantly improve our situation. For as long as I can remember, education has been the most determining factor for newer generations, improving their socioeconomic status or quality of life. We are all born with innate curiosity and a desire to learn more about the world around us. For many kids, all it takes is a bit of encouragement and support and the right resources to provide them with the life-changing experience of education.
