Everything announced at Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase 2022

Tomas Franzese

Following a shockingly good State of Play and an underwhelming Summer Game Fest Kickoff , it was Microsoft’s turn to enter the spotlight and highlight the games coming to Xbox platforms and services. Namely, we saw Starfield in action even though it was delayed until 2023, and we got a better idea of what games are coming to Xbox Game Pass over the next 12 months.

Redfall gameplay shows what Arkane’s vampire shooter is all about

Forza motorsport will actually release in spring 2023, grand strategy game ara: history untold announced by xbox game studios, minecraft enters the strategy genre with minecraft legends, as dusk falls and pentiment flesh out microsoft’s 2022 lineup, hideo kojima reveals xbox game studios partnership, starfield gameplay reveal shows what bethesda’s next rpg is really like, everything else: .

This was a significant showcase for Microsoft, which needed to confirm what it had in store for this year and what new games are on the horizon. While there were plenty of exciting new gameplay trailers and game announcements, nothing quite blew us away. Still, the presentation painted an extremely clear picture of what Xbox players can expect between now and June 2023. This is everything that was announced at the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase 2022.

The show opened with our first look at gameplay for Redfall , an upcoming cooperative shooter about vampires from Arkane Austin. It initially leans quite hard into the horror aspects of the game before transitioning into showing bombastic shooting action, each character’s abilities, and more. Redfall will be released in 2023.

We finally got another look at Turn 10’s Forza Motorsport  for Xbox Series X , with a focus on its gameplay , lighting, and dynamic time of day system, and more. While many assumed that the beautiful racing game would launch later this year, it’s actually not coming out until spring 2023.

  • Fallout 4 is finally getting free Xbox Series X and PS5 upgrades
  • Xbox Game Pass loses some horror greats, but gains a kid-friendly racing game
  • Summer Game Fest will hold its fifth annual showcase this June

Oxide Games and Xbox Game Studios Publishing revealed a brand-new historical turn-based grand strategy game called Ara: History Untold. It was one of the few trailers without any gameplay, but it teases a game that will encompass centuries of history and lots of cultures. It doesn’t have a release date, but we know it’s coming to PC and Game Pass, and players can sign up for the history program.

Minecraft showed up during the Xbox show, but it wasn’t with a simple update. Instead, a bran- new action strategy game called Minecraft Legends was announced. We even saw a bit of gameplay after the cinematic trailer, and it definitely looks very unique when compared to anything done with Minecraft before. Minecraft Legends will be released for PC, Xbox Series X |S, and Xbox One in 2023.

We got another look at As Dusk Falls , a narrative-focused game with a motion comic-like art style. The new trailer gave us a better look at the story and confirmed a July 19 release date. We also learned that a new narrative RPG from Obsidian Entertainment called Pentiment launches later this year. These games help flesh out Microsoft’s paltry 2022 lineup in the wake of Starfield’s delay.

During a segment focused on Japanese games, Hideo Kojima stopped by the showcase to confirm Kojima Productions’ rumored partnership with Xbox Game Studios . He didn’t actually show his game, which is rumored to be called Overdose , but this is a disruptive announcement for players who associate Kojima with PlayStation because of Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding .

As expected, we got an extended look at Starfield’s gameplay in action during the showcase. We see a player explore the moon of Kreet in the year 2330 in first-person. They scan and encounter the local fauna, wildlife, and minerals before fighting some pirates, with shooting gameplay much more intense than anything Bethesda Game Studios has done before. They then go to the city of New Atlantis and see some of the game’s conversations in action. Todd Howard then showed us an early look at the game’s immensely detailed character customization, skill system, ship and crew customization, flying, and vast galaxy. Starfield will be released in 2023.

  • Hollow Knight: Silksong got a new trailer and is coming to Xbox Game Pass on day one.
  • Squanch Games’ Justin Roiland revealed his new game, High On Life , which releases in October 2022 and will be on Xbox Game Pass on day one.

  • A Plague Tale: Requiem got a gameplay trailer and will launch on day one with Xbox Game Pass.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is out now, but it's only available on PlayStation 5.

As is the case with Helldivers 2, Xbox players might be feeling left out of the fun as one of the year's most critically acclaimed games isn't on their platform. Although the original Final Fantasy VII is no longer on Xbox Game Pass, quite a few other fantastic RPGs from or inspired by Japanese developers are. If you're looking for a great RPG on Game Pass that'll fill the void, try these titles, listed in no particular order, this weekend. They won't fully replace the Rebirth-sized hole in your heart, but they're all killer games in their own right. Tales of Arise

The next batch of titles coming to Xbox Game Pass this month was just revealed. Leading the pack of games being added to the subscription service today is Tales of Arise, a critically acclaimed RPG from Bandai Namco Entertainment that Xbox previously leaked was coming to the service.

Tales of Arise was released in 2021. The latest entry in a long-running RPG series, it follows a slave and girl inflicted with a curse as they rise up against the kingdom of Rena. It sports real-time RPG combat, and is one of few games to score a five-star rating from Digital Trends.

Microsoft just released the latest episode of the Official Xbox Podcast, and it contained lots of crucial details on the future of Xbox. Microsoft addressed everything from how many games it will make multiplatform to the arrival of Activision Blizzard games on Xbox Game Pass to future Xbox hardware.

If you don't want to listen to the full 23-minute podcast and want more details than what's shared in the Xbox Wire post about the discussion, here's a quick rundown of the biggest points made during the episode. Four Xbox games are going multiplatform To kick things off, Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, addressed the multiplatform Xbox game rumors. "We made the decision that we’re going to take four games to the other consoles. Just four games, not a change to our kind of fundamental exclusive strategy,” he said. “We’re making these decisions for some specific reasons. We make every decision with the long-term health of Xbox in mind, and long-term health of Xbox means a growing platform, our games performing, building the best platform for creators, reaching as many players as we can."

Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase 2022: All The Biggest Game Announcements

Starfield, Redfall, and even Hollow Knight Silksong made appearances.

By Gabe Gurwin on June 12, 2022 at 1:59PM PDT

The Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase on June 12 was packed full of a ton of different games across Xbox, PC, and cloud. A ton of them are coming at launch to Game Pass, and in a different approach this year, almost every single game discussed will be released in the next 12 months--or at least is planned to. These were the biggest games and announcements at the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase.

The Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase was capped off with an extended gameplay demo for Starfield . One segment was set early in the game on the moon Kreet, showing the player first landing in a small craft. Alongside them is a robotic companion, which provides information on their objective--an abandoned research facility. As they make their way toward it, resources are highlighted on a nearby mountainside, and they're removed using a laser-cutting tool.

Upon arrival at the facility, a number of space pirates have already taken it over, and the player equips a rifle and moves in to attack. The gunplay looks a little rough right now--there's not much recoil or weight to the weapons--and the frame rate is sluggish, but that's what delays are for. You can fly a spaceship and land anywhere on over 1,000 planets across many different systems. Originally scheduled for a November launch, Starfield is now coming in 2023 for Xbox consoles, cloud, and PC.

During the presentation, we saw in-engine gameplay, with a survivor exploring a blood-soaked building, climbing into a very spooky attic and encountering a very angry vampire. One vampire quickly turns into several, but a friend shows up and helps her take them down before they're overwhelmed. The once-quaint and quiet town of Redfall is now a nightmare, and only the very best are still alive. Redfall is coming next year to Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Hollow Knight Silksong

What? Are we dreaming? No, Hollow Knight Silksong finally made another appearance, and a very unexpected one at that. The game's fast-paced combat was featured during the presentation, and it was confirmed the game will be coming to Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass on launch day. The game will be available across Xbox, PC, and cloud, but no release date was announced yet.

Riot Games and Xbox Partnership

Riot Games has partnered with Microsoft to offer benefits across a wide variety of its games, including unlocking all Valorant and League of Legends by default for Game Pass subscribers. This also applies to the mobile League of Legends: Wild Rift, and the Foundations Set is unlocked in Legends of Runeterra. A selection of Little Legends are also unlocked for Teamfight Tactics, and Riot says this is just a partial list of benefits coming to Game Pass subscribers.

Forza Motorsport

The next Forza Motorsport game has been in the works for quite a while, and it got its time in the spotlight during the showcase. We got a look at the variety of racing settings, including snowy mountains and desert environments, with sparks shooting off the road as metal scrapes against the surface. The game is coming in Spring 2023 to Xbox consoles, PC, and cloud. Microsoft said it features real-time ray tracing on Xbox Series X, calling it the most-advanced racing game ever.

Overwatch 2

The long-awaited Overwatch 2 is finally nearing release--at least in an early access state. The game's PvP is releasing on October 4 for not only Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, but also PS4, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch. During the presentation, we got a look at the game in action, with Bastion moving forward and blasting at enemies while hiding behind a shield, and lots of other classic characters looking just a little bit different. There's a new hero coming, as well-- Junker Queen --who seems to be a big fan of classic punk rock. Oh, and PvP is going to be free-to-play.

Vin Diesel vehicle (but not a diesel vehicle) Ark 2 was featured during the showcase, with the in-engine Unreal Engine 5 footage being very, very impressive. We see a group of dinosaurs battling each other, including a T-Rex wearing head armor--he's controlled by Diesel's character, and that seems like the ultimate way to survive in a world of dinosaurs. It's out on Xbox, PC, and cloud in 2023. An animated series is on the way, as well.

Minecraft Legends

Mojang Studios brought a brand-new Minecraft spin-off to the showcase, and it might not be what you were expecting. Minecraft Legends is a real-time strategy game that sees scary invaders making their way through portals and attacking those living on the once-peaceful and blocky plains. But being a hero isn't easy. In Minecraft Legends, you control a character directly and engage in combat, but you're also able to direct your followers as you work to "unite the Overworld." It's coming to Xbox consoles, PC, and cloud in 2023.

Obsidian director Josh Sawyer is back with Pentiment , a mystery game set in a world that resembles European artwork from hundreds of years in the past. Still a role-playing game but ditching combat for other forms of conflict resolution, Pentiment's presentation is pretty remarkable, and we'll be able to see how it exactly translates to a game very soon. It launches this November for Xbox consoles, PC, and cloud. It's one of several games in the works at Obsidian, which is also making Avowed and the early access game Grounded.

One of the most anticipated games of the entire show, Diablo IV was featured during the showcase with an announcement of its fifth class: the Necromancer . The demon Lillith has returned, and we got to see Xbox Series X gameplay for the very first time. Environments look remarkably detailed, with grass flowing in the wind and light glistening off the ice. There looks to be a real weight behind attacks, and because the game uses an open world, you're not limited to a linear path.

There will be nearly 150 dungeons, and the way you make it through the game is up to you. In Far Cry fashion, you can also clear out enemy areas and turn them into friendly towns, and you will see impact on the world based on what you do. With friends, you can also take part in "Local Events," which pop up in the world while you're exploring and resemble the raid bosses in World of Warcraft. With cross-play, PvP zones, and couch co-op support, there is a lot you can enjoy with a group, and as expected from Diablo, there will also be an extensive endgame to keep you invested after you've seen the credits. Diablo IV is coming to Xbox, PlayStation, and PC in 2023.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty

A game that looks a whole lot like Nioh and is made by Nioh developer Team Ninja, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is a Japanese-focused action game and will be coming to Game Pass on launch day. We don't know much about the game's specifics from the teaser trailer, but it appears you'll be able to use special orbs to power yourself up, and giant, terrifying monsters will stand in your way alongside human enemies. Yes, it does sound like Nioh. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer said the game was part of the continued push for more Japanese games on Xbox, especially considering the legacy Ninja Gaiden had on the original Xbox console.

Persona on Xbox

The Persona series has long ignored Xbox, but it's coming to the platform in a major way. Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4 Golden, and Persona 5 Royal are all coming to Xbox , starting with Royal on October 21. The latter two will arrive in 2023, and all three will be available on Game Pass.

Hideo Kojima

Hideo Kojima is one of the biggest names in video game development, and he has partnered with Microsoft to create something entirely new. Kojima called it a game he "always wanted to make," and said it's unlike anything anyone has ever played before. Powered by Microsoft's cloud technology, it's unclear exactly when the game will be ready, but it appears to be completely separate from the Death Stranding sequel that Norman Reedus accidentally spilled the beans on.

Both DLCs will take fans to brand-new areas, including swathes of major content.

RELATED: Why Avowed Wasn't at the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase

Scorn is an upcoming survival-horror game set within a gorey alien hellscape. The showcase featured a more intimate look at the title's gruesome aesthetics and gameplay, which is not for the faint of heart. Interested fans will be glad to hear that Scorn now has an official release date of October 21, 2022, when it will also become available through Xbox Game Pass.

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn

Minecraft Legends

One of the most exciting reveals to come from the showcase came with Minecraft Legends . A wholly new Minecraft experience, Legends will see players unite the mobs of the overworld to fight armies from the Nether. The game will be a real-time strategy game, and is currently aiming for a 2023 date.

Naraka Bladepoint

An interesting title that featured in the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase was Pentiment , a 16th Century narrative adventure set in Bavaria. Developed by Obsidian, the game was given a close release date of November 2022.

The popular survival title Grounded featured at the showcase, with Grounded 's official 1.0 release date being set for September 2022 . The game sees players control children who are shrunken down to insect size, battling for their lives against a now-gigantic threats in common gardens.

Ereban: Shadow Legacy

The update will allow players to become a captain, complete with a fully customizable cabin and the ability to name their ship. Alongside other changes, Season 7 of Sea of Thieves is aiming to be a huge one come release on July 21.

Ravenlok is an upcoming third-person action-adventure game developed by Cococucumber. Ravenlok is an RPG that will see players take control of a young girl within a mystical fantasy world, clearly inspired by Alice in Wonderland , fighting fairy-tale enemies while navigating a dangerous prophecy. Ravenlok will release in 2023, with Xbox Game Pass availability planned.

Another title announced at the showcase was Cocoon , an ambitious puzzle-adventure game from the mind of Jeppe Carlsen - lead gameplay designer for both Inside and Limbo . The game does appear to be more vibrant and colorful than these prior titles, aiming for a 2023 release.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty was also revealed at the showcase, being a dark fantasy-action game set in feudal China. Featuring comprehensive melee combat developed by Team Ninja, the game appears to blend supernatural and historical elements in the telling of its story. Set for a 2023 release date, Fallen Dynasty will also appear on the Game Pass service.

Persona 3, 4, and 5

In a landmark move for Microsoft's dealings with Japanese developers, Persona 3, 4, and 5 will be coming to Xbox and PC in October 2022. The iconic role-playing games have always favored PlayStation consoles, further establishing the importance of the games finally coming to Xbox.

Hideo Kojima's Unnamed Xbox Title

Another watershed moment for the showcase came with the confirmation that veteran designer Hideo Kojima has partnered with Xbox to produce a brand-new exclusive. As Kojima is strongly associated with PlayStation releases throughout his storied career, the development of an Xbox title gives further credence to how Xbox is widening its scope this generation.

Capping off the show, Starfield is an action-RPG focused on space exploration and combat, developed by Bethesda of The Elder Scrolls and Fallout fame. With exact details being few and far between prior to the showcase, fans finally got to see gameplay and a comprehensive overview of many mechanics.

Starfield will have over 1,000 explorable planets , comprehensive character customization, ship customization and piloting, and a dynamic storyline. With Starfield releasing next year after a prior delay, it is safe to say that the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase gave fans plenty to look forward to.

Starfield

What We Learned From The 2022 Xbox And Bethesda Showcase

Uproxx authors

As the month of video game reveals, trailers, and announcements continue we now move on to the Xbox and Bethesda showcase, where Microsoft got to show everything it has coming to the world of video games over the next 12 months. This was one of Microsoft’s most streamlined presentations yet with a little over an hour and a half of games to look at. What made it particularly enjoyable was how it cut out a lot of the fluff that slowed down previous presentations. There were fewer people talking, fewer trade show-like announcements, and more video games .

As for the video games themselves , there were very few weak points or games that felt like they might not be up to snuff. Everything seemed like something that was worth checking out , and considering Xbox’s policy of releasing games day one on Game Pass it’s hard to argue against playing any of the games shown. With that in mind, we’re focusing on what we felt were some of the bigger or more important announcements that were shown during the presentation.

This was the elephant in the room throughout the presentation. Everyone knew an update for Starfield was coming and after its recent delay we all wanted a big hook to tell us why we should still be interested in the game. There are always going to be people who play a game made by Bethesda Game Studios no matter what it is, but the rest of us definitely needed something to prove that Starfield wasn’t going to be the next big AAA flop.

They delivered. This doesn’t mean that the game is going to be good or that it’s going to release in a perfect state, but Xbox and Bethesda did a great job in showing why it is that Starfield is going to be interesting. Yes, the big hook of a “massive universe to explore” has burnt many of us before, but the idea of exploring space in the universe that is being shown off sounds really enticing. The space travel is intriguing, the space combat looks fun, and every sci-fi element is hitting the right notes. Obviously, we need to see how the game looks when it launches to make any final judgments, but after the delay, we’re happy to see a potentially exciting game.

Activision Blizzard

It has been quite a two years for Activision Blizzard. Not only has their release of new games and content slowed down to a crawl, but internal misconduct allegations , the company being sold , and multiple leaders leaving the company has made development on games a challenge.

Despite this, they were still able to get two major announcements out there during the showcase. Overwatch 2 has an early access release date and Diablo IV has one set for 2023. After having so many of their games feel like they were in endless development it has to feel great for those developers to finally have some game releases on the horizon. Especially when those two releases in particular are from highly anticipated franchises like Overwatch and Diablo .

The other major delay from Bethesda/Xbox, Redfall , led off the entire showcase with a gameplay trailer of its own. The game is a hero shooter where the enemies are vampires and cultists. That may sound basic, but the gameplay didn’t feel that way with the start of the trailer being a really intense gunfight between one of the major characters and some hard-to-kill vampires. The cultists provide an opportunity for some more traditional shooter action, but it looks like gunplay is going to be more than the usual pump bullets into the enemy until they stop moving type games we’ve seen in the past.

The big selling point of the game is that instead of being a multiplayer hero shooter, which is everywhere these days, it’s a story-focused one instead. That said, it doesn’t look all that fun to play on your own. This feels like one of those games where it’s going to be at its most fun when with a group of friends. That said, Arkane Austin is the studio behind it and their work on games like Prey and Dishonored tells us this is a team capable of making a strong single-player game. It has a 2023 release date so we shouldn’t have to wait too much longer to check it out.

Persona and reaching out to Japan

It is hard to put into words just how shocking it was to see Persona , a franchise that has been pretty much a guaranteed exclusive on the PlayStation, finally appearing on the Xbox. It also is a sign of a very important step for Microsoft and the Xbox, and that’s trying to fix the issues they’ve been having in Japan ever since their first console launched there in 2002. Microsoft has struggled to make much headway among Japanese gamers, for a variety of reasons, but one of the big ones is a lack of Japanese developed video games.

During the presentation, not only did Microsoft announce that Persona 3 Portable , Persona 4 Golden , and Persona 5 Royal , are all coming to the Xbox but they’re also entering a partnership with legendary Japanese developer, Hideo Kojima.

Xbox Game Studios & Kojima Productions are partnering to create a video game for Xbox like no one has ever experienced before, leveraging the cloud. Hideo Kojima is one of the most innovative minds in our industry, and we can’t wait to share what our teams will create #Xbox pic.twitter.com/44TtOQxB08 — Xbox (@Xbox) June 12, 2022

None of this is going to fix their relationship with Japan overnight, but Microsoft has been getting trounced in sales over there for two decades. When the Series S outsold the PS5 in Japan, it was the first time that had happened in eight years . Any type of outreach is necessary and it’s good to see they haven’t abandoned the region.

One thing that was notable throughout the presentation was how often Microsoft mentioned that these games were available on Game Pass day one. It’s been made clear many times before, so we don’t need to rehash it, but this is the business model Microsoft is going to continue moving forward with. The ability to play these games immediately through a service is always going to be extremely appealing because even someone that was not interested in a single game shown today will have a way to try them out. That is always going to be a strong sell for developers to continue putting their games on the service.

The next step for Xbox and Bethesda will of course be releasing their games. Microsoft has spent years buying development studios and promising new games, but so far their track record of consistent releases is spotty at best. They’ve had some absolute gems make no mistake about it, but with so many delays it’s made them inconsistent. Game Pass is a great service and will continue to be the reason to own an Xbox, but that doesn’t make the delays any less frustrating.

Insider Today

Xbox and Bethesda will hold a joint press conference on June 12 at 1 p.m. ET to showcase upcoming video games from both brands. The nearly two-hour presentation would typically be a part of E3, the industry's largest annual publisher conference, but this year's Xbox conference will be a part of Summer Games Fest, in partnership with The Game Awards.

You can watch the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase on their official social media channels at YouTube, Twitch, Facebook or Twitter. The Summer Games Fest website will also feature the stream.

Xbox and Bethesda held their first joint conference in 2021 after Microsoft agreed to acquire Bethesda for $7.5 billion. Microsoft says it plans to launch five new first-party games between July 2022 and June 2023; previously announced titles include Hellblade 2: Senua's Saga, Fable, Avowed, and State of Decay 3.

Bethesda recently delayed two of its upcoming titles, Starfield and Redfall, until early 2023, but you can expect to see more of those games during the June 12 presentation. Bethesda's other hit franchises include Fallout, the Elder Scrolls series, and Doom, as well as newer releases like Deathloop and Dishonored.

Xbox will follow the press conference with another extended showcase event on June 14 that's focused on gameplay footage, hands-on demonstrations, and developer interviews. The Xbox Games Extended Showcase will stream for about 90 minutes on the Xbox social channels starting at 1 p.m. ET on June 14. We'll know more about which games will be involved after Sunday's presentation.

Xbox at Gamescom 2022 recap: Microsoft Flight Simulator, Age of Empires, Sea of Thieves and more

Xbox’s gamescom 2022 presentation covered more than a dozen exciting games.

xbox gamescom 2022

If you were eagerly anticipating the Xbox Gamescom 2022 presentation, then your wait is over. Microsoft’s big gaming presentation in Cologne, Germany will took place today (August 25), and Tom's Guide live-blogged the whole proceedings, bringing you the latest news as it happened.

Beforehand, Microsoft was pretty forthcoming about what it planned to show off at Gamescom 2022. As such, we had a complete list of Xbox games to expect — or perhaps “nearly complete,” since there were a few short trailers that the company didn't list on its website.

First and foremost, if you want to watch a recording of the Xbox Gamescom 2022 conference for yourself, it's easy to do. The event was at 5 a.m. PT/8 a.m. ET/1 p.m. BST today, August 25 and we've embedded the official stream of it below. It should also be available on the official Xbox YouTube , Twitch and Facebook channels.

Now, for the games. Here’s are the major titles that Microsoft showed off, along with the official Xbox Wire blog that listed them:

  • Microsoft Flight Simulator (8 a.m. ET)
  • A Plague Tale: Requiem (8:40 a.m. ET)
  • Sea of Thieves (9:00 a.m. ET)
  • Lies of P (9:35 a.m. ET)
  • Gunfire Reborn (9:55 a.m. ET)
  • High On Life (10:15 a.m. ET)
  • Planet of Lana (10:35 a.m. ET)
  • Grounded (10:55 a.m. ET)
  • Pentiment (11:30 a.m. ET)
  • Under the Waves (12:05 p.m. ET)
  • Minecraft Legends (12:30 p.m. ET)
  • Age of Empires IV (1:05 p.m. ET)

The “biggest” games on the list were Microsoft Flight Simulator , Sea of Thieves, A Plague Tale: Requiem and Age of Empires IV , three of which are already out.

We’re still waiting on cloud gaming for non-Game Pass titles , as well as Microsoft’s elusive Xbox streaming device . However, there wasn't any information about either one today.

The stream took six hours, and included a lot of in-depth interviews with developers. It’s probably not the kind of thing you’ll want to watch start-to-finish, so use the list above to learn the timecodes for your favorite games.

See below for our full live blog of the event.

Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) review

The first game that Microsoft intends to show off today is Microsoft Flight Simulator. In our glowing review, Tom's Guide awarded the game 4.5/5 stars and a coveted Editor's Choice award. According to editor-in-chief Mike Prospero:

"Microsoft Flight Simulator [not] only looks fantastic, but also leverages Microsoft’s satellite imagery and live weather data to provide the most realistic experience yet ... As I was writing this Microsoft Flight Simulator review, I would get lost for hours simply admiring everything outside the cockpit."

We don't know exactly what new additions the company will announce for the game today, but Microsoft Flight Simulator has received a steady stream of updates and expansions ever since it debuted in 2020. Another substantial add-on seems like a good bet.

A promo shot for A Plague Tale: Requiem

A Plague Tale: Requiem is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated games of 2022.

The game picks up where A Plague Tale: Innocence, the cult hit from 2019, left off. Like its predecessor, A Plague Tale: Requiem will be a stealth/survival game that follows a pair of siblings in medieval France. Equal parts touching and unsettling, A Plague Tale: Innocence won fans over with its unusual premise and unconventional gameplay.

Microsoft will probably show off something new from Requiem today, although gamers will have to wait until October 18 to play the full game for themselves.

Xbox and Samsung

Microsoft’s schedule seems pretty set, and the company’s primary focus at Gamescom 2022 will be on the 12 games listed above. However, a few weeks ago, a glitch in the Xbox app suggested an intriguing possibility: the ability to stream Xbox games that you own, even if they’re not on Xbox Game Pass .

We know that Microsoft is working on this technology, and Gamescom would be a good time to announce it. Some fans on Twitter and Reddit suggested that the glitch a few weeks ago was an early peek at a Gamescom announcement. That may just be wishful thinking. But if not, it would arguably be one of the most exciting things to come out of Gamescom this year.

age of empires iv

Of all the games on the docket for Xbox at Gamescom 2022, Age of Empires IV has the longest amount of time devoted to it, at a staggering 55 minutes. We’re not sure what Microsoft has in mind, since the company just announced a huge expansion for the game: two new playable civilizations, the Ottomans and the Malians. The civilizations will be free to download, and will debut on October 25.

Perhaps Microsoft will go into more details about the Ottomans and the Malians; perhaps it will discuss the game’s lively multiplayer scene; or perhaps we’re about to get a paid expansion, complete with new campaign content. We’ll know for sure in a few hours.

xbox gamescom 2022

The Xbox Gamescom 2022 livestream is just about five minutes away, so tune in now if you're interested in Microsoft Flight Simulator. Otherwise, come back at 8:40 AM ET, when coverage on A Plague Tale: Requiem will start.

xbox gamescom 2022

Xbox head Phil Spencer is introducing the Gamescom livestream. He says thank you to fans around the world, and reiterates that we're going to take a look at games either debuting or getting major updates within the next 12 months.

xbox gamescom 2022

First up is Microsoft Flight Simulator. There's a new mode called City Update, which helps the game create even more realistic cities based on real-world map data. In a fitting move for Gamescom, the first City Update highlighted here is for Germany, which includes Bonn, Dusseldorf and, of course, Cologne.

The City Update - Germany update is available right now.

xbox gamescom 2022

Also available today is the Junkers F 13, a famous German airplane developed in 1922. It was the world's first passenger aircraft made entirely from metal. The development team also shared some detail about how they recreate digital replicas of old planes, even if complete, working models no longer exist.

xbox gamescom 2022

One highly requested feature for Microsoft Flight Simulator was the inclusion of helicopters. However, helicopters are much more difficult to simulate than planes, due to how airflow affects every part of the vehicle. Replicating this airflow was one of the major challenges for the developers.

xbox gamescom 2022

Another highly requested addition was the "glider" category. These vehicles require a lot of momentum to start, but can glide for hours under ideal conditions. Much like helicopters, recreating realistic airflow conditions is vital to the experience.

xbox gamescom 2022

Microsoft Flight Simulator: 40th Anniversary Edition will come out on November 11, and include a variety of historical planes, including The Spirit of St. Louis and the Spruce Goose. The update will be free for people who already own Microsoft Flight Simulator.

xbox gamescom 2022

Now that Flight Simulator is done, we're taking a quick look at a new trailer for The Last Case of Benedict Fox, a stylish Metroidvania that will be out in Spring 2023. After that, it's on to A Plague Tale: Requiem.

xbox gamescom 2022

If you're at Gamescom, you can play many of these games for yourself, as some of the Xbox hosts have pointed out. The stream will be back online in a few minutes.

xbox gamescom 2022

Next up is A Plague Tale: Requiem, a sequel to 2019's cult hit A Plague Tale: Innocence. Medieval French siblings Amicia and Lucas will pick up a few months after they left off in the last game, with the threats of war and sickness still looming large.

xbox gamescom 2022

Amicia will have expanded stealth and item abilities; Hugo will be able to manipulate rats more extensively than before.

The game will come out on October 18, and will be available day one on Xbox Game Pass.

xbox gamescom 2022

According to the developers, A Plague Tale: Requiem will be much more open than the first game, both in terms of level design, and how many abilities Amicia has at her disposal.

xbox gamescom 2022

More developer commentary, especially about mocap, voice actors, and the challenge of writing for child characters. No earthshaking revelations here, but if you're A Plague Tale fan, it's an interesting glimpse behind the scenes.

xbox gamescom 2022

There's a trailer for Disney Dreamlight Valley, an interactive sim that lets you interact with a bunch of classic Disney characters. The game will be out on September 6.

The Xbox stream proper will be back online in a few minutes.

xbox gamescom 2022

Next up is the Sea of Thieves panel, which will run for about half an hour. So far, the developers are talking generally about what it's like to work on the game, and to be back in the office after working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

xbox gamescom 2022

The developers are especially proud of the recently released Season 7 for Sea of Thieves, which lets you captain your own pirate ship, complete with a customizable name.

xbox gamescom 2022

The developers are guessing the top 10 ship names in Sea of Thieves. "Sloop Dog" is amusing, as is "Usain Boat."

xbox gamescom 2022

The next story content in Sea of Thieves will deal with fan-favorite character Merrick, and bring the current arc to a close.

sea of thieves

A recent Sea of Thieves story arc involved a "decision point," where the players had to choose how the story would progress. The developers discussed the challenges of developing content for an either/or scenario, where only one route would ultimately make its way into the game.

xbox gamescom 2022

Now that the Sea of Thieves panel is done, we got a brief trailer for Second Extinction, a first-person shooter where you can hunt dinosaurs. The game will be out on October 20.

xbox gamescom 2022

The next segment of the Xbox Gamescom 2022 presentation is about Lies of P, and intriguing dark fantasy game based on the Italian fairytale Pinocchio.

xbox gamescom 2022

The gameplay in Lies of P has a decidedly Souls-like look, with multiple weapons to equip, stamina to manage, and items to consume. Even the interface looks similar. The game will be out in 2023.

xbox gamescom 2022

The developers explained that this is their first single-player console RPG. As such, they needed a recognizable hook for the story. Reimagining a classic fairytale, such as Pinocchio, felt like a natural way to get gamers interested. Furthermore, the original Pinocchio has some decidedly dark themes, which should lend themselves well to a violent game.

xbox gamescom 2022

One interesting feature of Lies of P is that you can combine and customize equipment, letting you create weapons that best suit your playstyle. The devs showed off a few possible combinations here, but the full game will likely have dozens of options.

xbox gamescom 2022

One memorable aspect of the original Pinocchio story is that lying would make the titular puppet's nose grow. The developers have acknowledged that the concept of lies, and how easily we tell them, will play a central role in the game, and have some kind of effect on gameplay.

xbox gamescom 2022

The next item on the agenda is a trailer for Atomic Heart: a first-person shooter set in an alternate 1945, where robots and organic monstrosities threaten humanity. The game will be available on PC, Xbox Series X/S and Xbox Game Pass.

The regular Xbox Gamescom 2022 stream will resume in less than a minute.

xbox gamescom 2022

Next up is Gunfire Reborn, a first-person shooter where you can play as a variety of bizarre creatures in a stylized, cel-shaded world. Co-op multiplayer seems to be the main focus here, with a big focus on weapon variety. The game will be out on October 27 for Xbox platforms, but it's already out on Steam.

xbox gamescom 2022

Gunfire Reborn is actually an FPS roguelite with RPG elements - although co-op is an optional part of the experience. The single-player mode lets you unlock new characters and level up your profile, which should help prep players for the multiplayer mode.

xbox gamescom 2022

More granular info on Gunfire Reborn. There's a large online multiplayer community, big boss fights, a steep learning curve, a variety of playable characters - all pretty standard roguelite and multiplayer stuff. The upcoming Xbox launch should open up the community a bit as well.

xbox gamescom 2022

There's a sizzle reel about Xbox aficionados sharing their feelings on Gamescom. Since Gamescom hasn't had a physical show in the last few years, they all seem pretty excited to get together in person again.

The Xbox Gamescom 2022 stream will resume in about seven minutes.

xbox gamescom 2022

We're back with High On Life from Squanch Games. This is the latest game from Justin Roiland, co-creator of Rick and Morty.

xbox gamescom 2022

If you've played Trover Saves the Universe , High On Life seems to have a pretty similar tone. High On Life seems more action-oriented, as you collect a variety of talking weapons. The first one on display is a talking gun, who sounds an awful lot like Morty from Rick and Morty.

xbox gamescom 2022

We got our first glimpse of the game's combat. Each weapon in the game has three different abilities, one of which is primarily for traversal. Kenny, the game's first gun, has a "Glob Shot," which can knock down certain platforms and open up new areas.

xbox gamescom 2022

Like Trover Saves the Universe, High On Life seems incredibly dialogue-driven. You have a number of dialogue choices, and each voice actor recorded a lot of extra, improvised lines. If you like the freewheeling nature of Roiland's animated comedies, you'll probably enjoy High On Life, too.

xbox gamescom 2022

We also got a look at the game's first boss fight against 9-Torg. Kenny dealt out damage by shooting 9-Torg, while Knifey (an equippable talking knife) helped the player leap around the battlefield and dodge toxic sludge. That's all the gameplay we're going to see at Gamescom 2022, though.

xbox gamescom 2022

Here's a trailer for Warhammer 40,000: Darktide. It's a cooperative FPS, which will be available on November 30.

The regular livestream will recommence in about five minutes.

xbox gamescom 2022

Next up on the Xbox Gamescom 2022 showcase is Planet of Lana, a peaceful side-scroller with a striking, watercolor art style. You'll also get a catlike companion called Mui, which lets you interact with various parts of the environment.

xbox gamescom 2022

Planet of Lana is coming to Xbox Game Pass, which the developers hope will open it up to a whole new audience. Finding players for indie games is often a challenge, the development team has received a lot of support from Xbox, and having the game available on Game Pass, day one, should help build the player base early on.

The game will come out in Spring 2023, after a recently announced delay.

xbox gamescom 2022

More members of the Xbox team are weighing in on Gamescom. After that, we'll learn more about Obsidian's Grounded, which will be in full release this fall.

xbox gamescom 2022

Phil Spencer himself is weighing in on Grounded, talking one-on-one with Adam Brennecke, the game's director. Brennecke explains that Grounded's full launch will be an opportune time for both new and returning players to check out the title.

xbox gamescom 2022

Grounded will be out on September 27 for PC, Xbox and Xbox Game Pass. The title has been available in early access for a long time, but this will mark the first time that players can go through the completed game, start to finish.

Developer Shyla Schofield is discussing how the game has evolved since its initial early access launch.

xbox gamescom 2022

When Grounded goes into full release on September 27, the major addition will be a full story mode. Up until now, Schofield said, players have lacked some important context for the game's "shrink down and explore a backyard" premise. That context will be available in about a month.

xbox gamescom 2022

Obsidian is in the process of ensuring that bases and player progress from Grounded's early access period carry over. However, the devs are also encouraging players to start new save files in order to experience the story mode from start to finish.

xbox gamescom 2022

The Grounded interview is done, and now we've got a sizzle reel about games available on PC Game Pass.

The Xbox Gamescom 2022 livestream will resume in about five minutes.

xbox gamescom 2022

One of the most visually striking games on display at Gamescom 2022 is Pentiment, a medieval adventure game from Obsidian. We're taking a look at a trailer right now.

xbox gamescom 2022

Unlike most Obsidian games, Pentiment casts you as a specific character: Andreas Maler. However, you'll still get an opportunity to customize some aspects of Andreas' background and skills.

xbox gamescom 2022

The Obsidian team is currently discussing the medieval paintings and woodcuts that inspired the art of Pentiment. We've also seen a few gameplay snippets, in which Andreas can choose dialogue options that will affect the gameplay.

Right now, the Pentiment team is taking a deep dive on the game, which is admittedly a little esoteric. Tom's Guide will check in again toward the end of the interview around 12 PM ET, then focus on major updates from each subsequent studio.

xbox gamescom 2022

The Pentiment presentation is done, and the livestream will resume in about 10 minutes.

xbox gamescom 2022

The next game on display is Under the Waves from Quantic Dream, developer of the upcoming Star Wars Eclipse. Under the Waves seems to be an underwater exploration games, with a lot of quiet, scenic moments and an atmospheric soundtrack.

xbox gamescom 2022

The Surfrider Foundation Europe, which aims to protect ocean ecology, will collaborate with Under the Waves in order to encourage players to explore (and protect) the seas for themselves.

xbox gamescom 2022

Xbox is currently showing off Xbox Game Pass on the Samsung Gaming Hub , which we covered hands-on a few months back. It's an impressive experience, and essentially lets you play console games while completely bypassing the console.

xbox gamescom 2022

Minecraft Legends, one of the biggest games of the Xbox Gamescom 2022 conference, is the topic of discussion right now. Touted as an "action strategy game,"  Minecraft Legends presents a different take on the tried-and-true Minecraft franchise. The game will be out in 2023 for PC and Xbox platforms.

xbox gamescom 2022

As a strategy game, Minecraft Legends is a little outside of developer Mojang's usual wheelhouse. To facilitate the strategic gameplay in Legends, Mojang teamed up with Blackbird Interactive, a developer with extensive experience in the real-time strategy field.

xbox gamescom 2022

Like most RTS games, Minecraft Legends will give players access to a variety of units, and let players discover their favorite combinations. Most levels will allow for a wide range of player strategies, depending on how they scope out the situation, and what kind of tactics they want to employ.

xbox gamescom 2022

The Minecraft Legends presentation is done, and the Xbox hosts are showing off a sizzle reel of Gamescom 2022. Next up is Age of Empires IV, which will finish off this year's Xbox presentation.

The Xbox Gamescom 2022 presentation proper will pick up at 1:05 PM ET.

xbox gamescom 2022

As Microsoft announced a few days ago, Age of Empires IV is getting two new civilizations: the Malians and the Ottomans. Both civilizations will be free to download on October 25.

xbox gamescom 2022

First, we have a deep dive on the Ottoman civilization. The Military School will passively generate military units over time, free of charge, while the Janissary unit will provide gunpowder weaponry earlier in the game than other civilizations.

xbox gamescom 2022

Much like the real-world Mali empire, the Malians in Age of Empires IV focus on acquiring gold. The Malians can mine gold infinitely, without worrying about the resource running out. On the flip side, though, the civilization has almost no archers, focusing primarily on melee combat.

xbox gamescom 2022

If you're waiting for news about other civilizations coming to Age of Empires IV, you'll have to keep waiting. The Ottomans and the Malians are the big focus right now, and the Age of Empires IV development team doesn't want to comment on any other potential civilizations just yet. However, the game is "alive," and players should probably expect more playable empires in the future.

xbox gamescom 2022

And that's the end of the Xbox Gamescom 2022 livestream. There weren't any huge announcements. But, as Microsoft promised, there will be some substantial additions for more than a dozen fan-favorite games within the next 12 months. Sometimes, that's all you can ask for.

It's not yet clear when the next major Xbox event will be, but Tom's Guide will keep you posted when it happens. Until then, enjoy the rest of Gamescom 2022 .

Xbox and Bethesda E3 2022 showcase expected to run for around 90 minutes

Xbox is yet to finalize the run time, but we've got some clues

Xbox and Bethesda confirm an E3 2022 showcase on June 12

The Xbox & Bethesda not-E3 presentation could run for right around 90 minutes.

Last week, Xbox and Bethesda announced their joint games showcase slated for next month on June 12. Right now, a run time hasn't officially been announced for the forthcoming games showcase, but as per the sleuthing from the Twitter user just below, it looks like the presentation could last for roughly 90 minutes.

We don’t have a final show run time yet. But yes typically we end up close to that 90 mins mark. Will keep folks posted as we get closer! May 4, 2022

However, things could easily change. Xbox general manager Aaron Greenberg actually replied to the discovery on Twitter, revealing that the show's run time hadn't actually been finalized, but adding that Xbox showcases typically had run for 90 minutes in the past.

If you're wondering why the run time for the Xbox showcase could be so much longer than PlayStation State of Play showcases, you need only look at their scarcity. Whereas PlayStation tends to hold shorter showcases every few months, Xbox typically holds out from regular announcements in favor of blockbuster showcases at major events like E3.

Even though E3 has been cancelled this year , Xbox is still holding its traditional showcase at the same time. This is all against the backdrop of a changing summer games landscape, in which E3 has melted away in relevance over the last few years, only for other events like the Summer Games Fest and Gamescom Opening Night Live to take centre stage.

As for what could be in the supposedly-90-minute showcase from Xbox and Bethesda, look no further than Starfield . It was last year at E3 2021 that we saw the first proper trailer for Bethesda's new RPG , and with the game slated to launch this year on November 11, it's high time we get to see actual gameplay footage at long last.

Check out the full E3 2022 schedule for an overview of when every major gaming event is taking place later this year.
