The Night My Number Came Up plot

"12 Men and a Girl Re-Living a Dream That Fortold Disaster" At a trendy Hong Kong dinner party, a pilot is asked to reveal revealing details about a dream in which eight people take off in a Dakota DC-3 from Bangkok to Tokyo. This Dakota then crashes into the Japanese mountains. Among the listeners is Air Marshal Hardie, who has to fly to Tokyo the next day. Hardie initially puts this dream story aside, because his plane is a Liberator and only six people are on the flight. But when Hardie arrives at the airport, he learns that the Liberator has mechanical problems and is replaced by a Dakota. Shortly before the Dakota is about to leave, two more soldiers board. This brings the number of people to eight. Hardie fears the pilot's dream will come true and he will be doomed to die.

12 Men and a Girl Re-Living a Dream That Fortold Disaster

British Air Marshal Hardie is attending a party in Hong Kong when he hears of a dream, told by a pilot, in which Hardie's flight to Tokyo on a small Dakota propeller plane crashes on a Japanese beach. Hardie dismisses the dream as pure fantasy, but while he is flying to Tokyo the next day, circumstances start changing to align with the pilot's vivid vision, and it looks like the dream disaster may become a reality.

A Quentin Tarantino recommendation from the Empire Podcast with he and Edgar Wright. Very pre-FINAL DESTINATION / Twilight Zoney film about a dream one character has that may be a premonition for a plane crash. The prospective passengers find the whole thing rather amusing at first, but then, slowly the details of the dream start to come to fruition & things get creepy and tense. Gratifying gradual build thriller. Watched on KANOPY.

A parable about how skepticism inevitably turns to superstition whenever your number's called. The way the characters continually buckle against their foretold doom is pretty amusing.

George Rose plays a boorish Brummie trying to cadge a lift on the doomed flight and everyone treats him worse than the Chinese.

Very revealing little detail in a solid but uneventful pseudo-disaster flick.

Denhom Elliot and Michael Hordern suggest something interesting but Elliot is playing the character that he pretends to be in Rising Damp: The Movie and Hordern bows out after five minutes.

'If a pilot gets the conviction that he isn't going to survive, gradually the strain turns it into an obsession..' (Michael Redgrave as Air Marshal Hardie) -- Brief Synopsis: In Hong Kong, a naval commander relates to a group of people a strange dream of his about a plane accident involving several of them. The next day, details of the dream appear to be coming true during a flight to Tokyo.. -- Verdict: I'm quite partial to an exciting 'plane in peril' flick and over the years have been royally entertained by such titles as Island In The Sky, The High And The Mighty and Zero Hour! Even lesser works like the Airport series and Skyjacked from the '70's disaster…

A somewhat flat number that strives to chill the anatomy with a series of facts cosmically piling up against our British military flyers told in a dream the previous night. Psst, it ends catastrophically. Well, it’s vague. The Chinese, it is stated by a few in the film, believe their dreams foretell the future and you can imagine just how crazy that must sound to these extremely reasonable fellows. Proper, proper men. But the details start bothering a few passengers as they manifest into reality (the number and kind of passengers), and, like magic, terrible things start occurring. There is no real worry, however, and no chance that anyone here is getting hurt. The conceit might not work for everyone;…

The passengers on an official flight from Hong Kong to Japan learn that someone has dreamt that it will crash. Bit by bit the details of the dream start to come true.

You can see how this would make a good Twilight Zone episode or perhaps more appropriately how it could have been a part of Ealing's own Dead of Night anthology, but it's actually a story which goes deeper, asking questions about rationalism versus fatalism.

In a sense it is reminiscent of Pontypool , which may seem like a bit of a stretch bearing in mind that film's setting, but both movies are about the power of words and the effect they can have on people's minds. No one here…

It was a fun British film with a Rank production style to it. A good cast and kind of has this light fever dream quality to it maybe it's do to the small set design. I enjoyed seeing a young Denholm Elliot. The main premise is whether to believe in superstition but I kinda liked the next development in certain characters to almost accept there doomed fate(that part reminded me of "Journey Into Fear"). It was a fun light night watch but don't expect to much.

A quirky drama with elements of the supernatural, The Night My Number Came Up stars Michael Redgrave, Sheila Sim, Alexander Knox, Denholm Elliott and Michael Hordern, in a small but important role.

Based on a clairvoyant experience which Air Marshal Sir Victor Goddard claimed to have witnessed in 1946, I particularly enjoyed the films narrative style where we, as the viewer, only ever know as much as the lead characters. The events of the film could be taking place through fate or coincidence, it is not made clear.

An intriguing film with some fine performances, particularly from Redgrave, Sim and Knox.

"Storm, darkness, snow. This is it, isn't it?"

Next time I watch this, I'm hoping for a blizzard with some popcorn, a large Icee and a box of Milk Duds. Such a fun movie that takes place about ten years after WWII in Hong Kong. Its about a dream being told at a dinner party that bit by bit turns out to be true.

I heard about this movie from a podcast Quentin Tarantino did with Edgar Wright last year. This was a pick from Quentin and I was happy to see it was available from Kino.

ForenSeek

Review by ForenSeek ★★

An interesting idea with an execution as dry as a crumpet and as stale as a cup of tea. Like an extended episode of The Twilight Zone, only without the atmosphere and excellent writing of that show.

Niall Urquhart

Review by Niall Urquhart ★★★★

I don't remember hearing this get mentioned as one of the best Ealing films but it's easily up there. It's a really engaging film about superstition which in some respects shouldn't work but the cast is excellent throughout and the film keeps on doing enough to get over the inherent predictability of the plot. The crucial role was probably that of Michael Hordern who does a great job in setting up the premise and his presence lingers until he reappears at the end to crack a joke which concludes the film with a nudge and a wink.

Andrew Male

Review by Andrew Male ★★★★

“So, the Chinese are right after all.” aka Dead Of Flight.

Exists in the same tormented Hordern nightmare universe as Whistle And I'll Come To You and Scrooge.

A properly gripping melodrama about fate, free will and how the Colonial stiff upper lip is destroyed by Oriental philosophy.

Beautiful detail: things really start to go to shit after they ghoulishly decide to fly over Nagasaki and Hiroshima so they can "take a look".

Vice president kamala harris heads to ‘jimmy kimmel live’, ‘the night manager’ returns with supercharged two-season order at bbc & amazon; tom hiddleston back to star with hugh laurie as ep.

By Max Goldbart , Baz Bamigboye

The Night Manager renewed

EXCLUSIVE: One year ago we told you that a second season of John le Carré adaptation The Night Manager was quietly being developed under the codename Steelworks.

Now, Deadline can reveal that the BBC and new co-pro partner Amazon have gone big on a supercharged two-season order of the thriller, with Tom Hiddleston returning to lead, Hugh Laurie coming back as EP and with a new director in I Hate Suzie’s Georgi Banks-Davies . A third season has also been greenlit. David Farr is series creator and Stephen Garrett is leading the production.

Produced by The Ink Factory in association with Character 7, Demarest Films and 127 Wall, and in co-production with Spanish partner Nostromo Pictures, The Night Manager Season 2 was sold to Amazon by Fifth Season. The first was co-produced with AMC.

New director Banks-Davies, a BAFTA-winner who takes over from Susanne Bier, has credits including I Hate Suzie, Garfield and upcoming Netflix series Kaos.

The Night Manager Season 1 was a huge success, watched by millions and winning multiple BAFTAs, Emmys and Golden Globes including best actor for Hiddleston. Also starring Tom Hollander, Olivia Colman and Elizabeth Debicki, it followed Pine – who ran a luxury hotel in Cairo – as he attempted to infiltrate the inner circle of Roper’s crime syndicate after being hired by Foreign Office task force manager Angela Burr.

The first season was commissioned more than 10 years ago and the show has since been remade in India, lapping the UK version by swiftly having a Season 2 greenlit for Disney+ Hotstar in May last year.

They added: “Revisiting the story of Pine also means going beyond the events of John le Carré’s original work: that is a decision we have not taken lightly, but his compelling characters and the vision David has for their next chapter were irresistible.”

Amazon MGM Studios Head of Television Vernon Sanders said: “We are elated to bring additional seasons of The Night Manager to our Prime Video customers. The combination of terrific source material, the wonderful team at The Ink Factory, a great writer in David Farr, an award-winning director in Georgi Banks-Davies, as well as the talented cast truly make the series the full package.”

Hiddleston said: “The first series of The Night Manager was one of the most creatively fulfilling projects I have ever worked on. The depth, range and complexity of Jonathan Pine was, and remains, a thrilling prospect.”

BBC content boss Charlotte Moore added: “After years of fervent speculation I’m incredibly excited to confirm that The Night Manager is returning to the BBC for two more series.”

The Night Manager series two is created and executive produced by Farr, based on the characters created by le Carré. Additional executive producers include Garrett for Character 7, Banks-Davies, Laurie and Hiddleston; Joe Tsai and Arthur Wang for 127 Wall; Stephen and Simon Cornwell, Michele Wolkoff, and Tessa Inkelaar for The Ink Factory; Adrián Guerra for Nostromo Pictures; William D. Johnson for Demarest Films, Nick Cornwell, Susanne Bier, Chris Rice for Fifth Season and Gaynor Holmes for the BBC.
