The PhD thesis underlies the general rules and guidelines of the University of Basel and fellows are automatically part of the Biozentrum International PhD Program. The fellowship provides full funding for the entire PhD.

If you have any questions, please contact the PhD Student Office

The Biozentrum PhD Fellowships program was established in 2006 by the Biozentrum professors Joachim Seelig and Jeff Schatz with the generous support of the Werner Siemens Foundation who recognized the value of an international excellence program. After the initial financial support by the Werner Siemens Foundation, the University of Basel took over funding the salaries of new fellows in 2010, to assure the continuation of the program, since it has proven to be both a great opportunity for the graduates and an enrichment for the international community of the Biozentrum.

Switzerland PhD Programme

A Swiss PhD usually takes 3-5 years. Traditional doctorates focus on independent research; more structured programmes include additional training and sometimes involve two or more universities working in partnership. Both types of PhD require you to produce an original thesis and present it for a public examination. Some programmes are delivered in English, with others offered in German, French or Italian.

DNP/PhD candidate Lisa Grisham awarded March of Dimes graduate nursing scholarship

Grisham_lisa.jpg.

Head and shoulders shot of Lisa Grisham

Lisa Grisham, MSN, NNP , a University of Arizona College of Nursing DNP/PhD candidate, received the Margaret Comerford Freda March of Dimes Graduate Nursing Scholarship Award .

“Being selected as the recipient of the 2024 Margaret Comerford Freda March of Dimes Graduate Nursing Scholarship is exciting and humbling, and the honor is almost indescribable,” Grisham said. “I know there were many well-qualified applicants who deserved this award. I am thankful that my work stood out and I was lucky enough to be selected. I look forward to making the March of Dimes proud with the work that I do for mothers and babies.”

The March of Dimes website says the award and $10,000 scholarship recognize and promote excellence in nursing and further the organization's commitment to closing the health equity gap and ensuring all moms and babies receive the highest quality medical care.

“We are extremely proud and excited for Lisa to receive this award,” said Brian Ahn, PhD, dean of the College of Nursing. “The college, just like the March of Dimes, is committed to ensuring that the health equity gap closes, and this award signifies the quality of the work our students undertake.”

Grisham said the scholarship will support the completion of her dissertation research, which is a feasibility trial examining the effect of babywearing (carrying your baby with a wrap or device leaving your hands and arms free) on infants who experience withdrawal after birth due to in-utero exposure to opioids.

“These babies require a lot of attention and resources in the hospital. Being able to understand the calming and comforting mechanisms behind babywearing is the first step to aiding clinician-scientists in developing additional effective nonpharmacologic interventions,” Grisham said.

“Lisa’s expertise working with infants with NAS/NOWS and their mothers with substance use disorders is rare and revolutionary,” said her advisor, Sheila M. Gephart, PhD, RN, FAAN, professor and interim chair of the Advanced Nursing Practice and Science Division at the College of Nursing. “The important next step in her career is to hone her ability to conduct rigorous and meaningful research to generate new knowledge that ultimately will lessen morbidity and enhance lives. Lisa’s proposed biobehavioral research is generation-shifting work. She is poised to be a next-generation leader in neonatology and nursing science.”

Grisham has worked at Banner – University Medical Center Tucson for 24 years – the first five years as a nurse and then 19 years as a nurse practitioner. She and her team have created a family-centered neonatal abstinence care program designed to improve care for infants experiencing withdrawal from in-utero opioid exposure and their families with opioid use disorder.

Six institute for black catholic studies students receive inaugural sister jamie t. phelps scholarships.

  • 15 August 2024

Sister Jamie Phelps Scholarship

The Institute for Black Catholic Studies (IBCS) of Xavier University of Louisiana has been a staple of the university for 45 years, a community devoted to evangelizing the African American community and the church at-large. Every summer, students gather on the Xavier campus to participate in the program, which offers the opportunity for graduate studies or continuing education in theology and parish ministry. This year, six IBCS students were the first recipients of a newly endowed scholarship established in honor of IBCS charter member and former director, Sister Jamie T. Phelps, O.P., Ph.D.

“In their everyday walks of life, these students embody a love of learning and a desire to serve God by ministering to God’s people, passion and determination that Sister Jaime T. Phelps has displayed throughout her life,” said Dr. Kathleen Dorsey Bellow, director of Xavier’s IBCS. “Sister’s commitment to Black Catholic theology, spirituality, and history has inspired the Institute from its beginning. These scholarships help ensure that her spirit will live on in every IBCS generation.”

The six IBCS students- Ali Mumbach, Alicia Gray, April Williams-Bell, Shaylyn Cothron, Rahsaan Garlin, and Pattie J. Griffin- were awarded the 2024 Phelps scholarship in support of their continued studies and contributions to the Black Catholic community,

Ali Mumbach is pursuing her master’s degree in theology (Th.M.) at the Institute and a master’s of sociology at Howard University.  She serves as a campus minister at Howard’s Sr. Thea Bowman Catholic Student Center.

Alicia Gray is another IBCS student earning the Th.M.  She is a New Orleans elementary school teacher and a member of St. Peter Claver Catholic Church, where she serves on the Beautification Committee and sings with the Voices of St. Peter Claver. Gray is also the assistant choir director at W. Smith Elementary School in Violet, Louisiana.

Scholarship recipients

April Williams-Bell is one of the four scholarship recipients enrolled in the IBCS Continuing Education Program. She is a coordinator at Lafourche Parish Juvenile Justice Facility and Alderwoman for the Village of Napoleonville, Louisiana. She is also a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, where she serves as the Parish council secretary and a member of the Rosary Rally. Willams-Bell is also the director of religious education at the St. Paul de Vincent Society.

Shaylyn Cothron, also enrolled in the Continuing Education Program. Cothron is the first Xavier undergraduate to participate in the IBCS while still in undergrad. She is a rising senior Chemistry major in the Class of 2025 with a double minor in Theology and Biology. Cothron is Grand Lady of the St. Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary Collegiate Unit. Also on campus, Cothron is a member of Xavier’s Campus Ministry, Peer Deans, and Purposeful Infrastructure Promoting Equality (PIPE Program). She belongs to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Rahsaan Garlin is the associate director of African American, African and Caribbean Apostolate for the Archdiocese of Newark, N.J.  Like Cothron and Williams-Bell, Garlin is a student in the Continuing Education program. Garlin is a member of St. Patrick & Assumption/All Saints Parish in Jersey City, New Jersey where he is the director of youth ministry.

Pattie J. Griffin is the final 2024 scholarship recipient in the Continuing Education program. A graduate of the IBCS, she received the ThM degree in 1995 but returned to the IBCS as a lifelong learner in the faith. She is a retired deaf educator and a member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Fayetteville, North Carolina where she is the Youth Center director, director for after-school tutoring, director of Summer Camp, and a Choir member. Griffin is also a sign-language interpreter for Mass at the African American Evangelization Ministry. In her free time, she volunteers as a poll worker for elections.

Born in 1941 to a Catholic family and educated in Catholic schools, Sister Phelps became a member of the Adrian Dominican Sisters in 1959.  As a former social worker and lifelong scholar, Sister Jamie has always used her considerable talents and education to benefit the people of God. She served as a consultant during the planning stages of the Institute for Black Catholic Studies and after she had earned her Ph.D. in Systematic Theology from the Catholic University of America, Sister began teaching summers in the IBCS.  She has also served on the faculty of several Catholic institutions of higher learning. In 2003, Xavier University officials appointed Dr. Phelps as IBCS director and the Katharine Drexel Professor of Systemic Theology. She held the position for eight years. Sister Phelps was also instrumental in creating the Black Catholic Theological Symposium, which meets annually, and like the IBCS, serves as a space for professional theological education and research.

“The Institute for Black Catholic Studies will forever bless Sr. Jamie T. Phelps and the Adrian Dominican Sisters for their investment in Black scholars who seek, through IBCS study and community life, to further the legacy established by the esteemed ancestors and elders who imagined the Institute for Black Catholic Studies,” said Dr. Bellow. “We expect that the present and future recipients of this scholarship will do just that.”

The Adrian Dominican Sisters established the Sr. Jamie T. Phelps, O.P., Ph.D. scholarship to help support the IBCS program established by Sister Jamie and in reparation for the congregation’s past participation in structural racism by creating new pathways toward racial justice. Persons interested in the 2025 scholarship program should apply and be accepted by the IBCS program. Application instructions and qualifications will be posted on the IBCS website in early January 2025.

ASU sets multiple enrollment records as the fall semester begins

University welcomes 41,000 new students, including a record 9,000 new first-year students from Arizona

As fall classes get underway on Aug. 22, some 40,800 new students will join the Sun Devil family, including first-year, transfer and graduate students enrolled across ASU’s campuses, locations and online.

Nearly 1 in 4 students enrolled at Arizona State University at the start of the fall semester are new to the university.

Of the new cohort, 17,000 are incoming first-year students — and of those, 9,170 are Arizona residents, a university record. But it’s not just undergrads showing state pride: Incoming master’s students from Arizona total 3,150, a 19% growth compared with last fall.

In total, the university will be welcoming 18,100 new students from Arizona, an increase of 9% from the prior year.

“It’s built into our name — we are first and foremost here to serve the people of Arizona,” ASU President Michael M. Crow said. “Our university is dedicated to enabling student success, leveraging its place, being socially embedded and engaging globally, so while we are ‘one university in many places,’ ensuring that Arizonans have the knowledge and tools to build a bright future is fundamental to who we are. Our state has unbelievable potential for achievement, health and prosperity, and ASU is here to help make it happen.”

How does ASU count its students?

ASU offers multiple start dates for our students, with many of our online students joining in later sessions offered in the fall and spring semesters. True to our mission of measuring ourselves by whom we include, we have adjusted our total enrollment reporting to include all students who join us over the course of a year. In previous years, we reported the total count at the start of the fall semester, but this number increases throughout the year, thus failing to account for tens of thousands of ASU students.

Our 181,000 students is a total of all unique students who enrolled at ASU in the past academic year: fall 2023, spring 2024 and summer 2024.

In a given year — counting unique enrollments across all sessions of fall, spring and summer — ASU enrolls more than 181,000 students. For this fall specifically, here are more highlights of the university’s new students.

First-year class: Quantity and quality

The first-year class is one of the most academically excellent cohorts in university history. Barrett, The Honors College will see a 14% increase in first-year students enrolled at the start of the semester. The weighted high school GPA of those students is 4.4, tying a university record.

First-year students at ASU represent all 50 states, plus Washington, D.C., and 86 countries.

The top majors for incoming first-year students include business, computer science and mechanical engineering. Other areas that saw noticeable growth are applied biological sciences (pre-dental), forensic science, aerospace engineering and community health.

Exemplifying ASU’s mission of inclusion, the university also welcomes a first-year, on-campus cohort in which 7,300 (52%) of the cohort identifies as an underrepresented minority, a university record. This includes a 7% growth in Hispanic/Latino students and 19% growth in Black/African American students.

Additionally this year, 36% of incoming first-year students, including on campus and online, identify as first-generation college students.

The university received 81,700 first-year, campus immersion applications for this fall, the most in ASU history.

ASU Online students

ASU Online — which this summer reached a milestone of 100,000 graduates — continues its commitment to expand educational opportunities to students within the United States, around the world and in remote locations like Native American reservations and military bases where it can be difficult to access higher education.

This fall, ASU Online enrollment grew by 12%, with more than 73,000 students projected for the start of the fall semester.

Many ASU Online students are pursuing their degrees thanks to partnerships with Starbucks and Uber, which provide tuition coverage for those who qualify.

Graduate students

Annually, nearly 41,000 graduates attend ASU, making up 23% of the student body.

Notably for this fall, the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law is seeing a 25% increase in Juris Doctor enrollments, and Arizona residents make up 46% of ASU Law students, the highest percentage in recent years.

Enrollment of new international master’s students on ASU’s campuses grew by 25%, reflecting ASU’s status as the No. 1 public university for hosting international students.

Campus growth

On the West Valley campus, enrollment of new first-year, transfer and master’s students increased by 25%.

To accommodate that growth, ASU is adding two new buildings, including the Casa del Valle residence hall, which opens this fall. It features 507 double-occupancy, suite-styled units; a social lounge; zen areas; study halls; a creation hub; and a landscaped courtyard.

The West Valley campus has also added three new schools in forensics, business and engineering to its offerings.

The Polytechnic campus is also following growth trends at the university. This fall, it will see a 15% increase in new first-year students, many looking to major in interdisciplinary sciences, engineering, management, technology, aviation and education.

A new year for all

From a new athletic conference in the Big 12 to a new general studies requirement to NeoBio , a new approach to teaching introductory biology, there’s plenty to explore for all new and returning students.

“I am thrilled to welcome our new and continuing students to the fall 2024 semester,” said Executive Vice President and University Provost Nancy Gonzales. “The demand for an ASU degree is undeniable. Our growing enrollment of Arizona residents is a reminder that higher education is deeply valued by our neighbors across the state. And our growth in international student enrollment is a testament to our reputation as one of the leading research universities in the world.

“Our charter compels us to be both academically excellent and inclusive to all qualified students. The sheer number of students who choose ASU as their academic home demonstrates that our university values resonate with students, families and scholars across the globe.

“I encourage all students to get involved in our community, forge relationships with and learn from our esteemed faculty, and always reach out for support if there’s anything you need to succeed at ASU.”

Fall enrollment numbers are projections for the fall semester as of Aug. 8, 2024. ASU continues to enroll students for fall, and final fall enrollment numbers will not be available until after the 21st day of class.

Alumnus Cindy Van Der Wal could not have imagined her hotel studies would lead her to the burgeoning field of sustainable investment nor that she would collaborate with her employer, Pro-invest Group, to sponsor Southern Cross University scholarships.

As a wide-eyed high school graduate, Cindy Van Der Wal’s career ambitions ranged from Wedding and Events Planner to Lecturer – a mixed bag, indeed.

Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) certainly wasn’t in the mix. In fact, it’s highly likely most careers counsellors would not have heard of the acronym just over a decade ago.

Cindy’s career counsellor did, however, encourage her to explore Southern Cross University courses delivered by The Hotel School , Sydney campus.

“I was able to spend a night at the InterContinental Sydney, experience the hotel environment as a guest and from an employee’s point of view,” Cindy said. “I spoke to The Hotel School team and toured behind the scenes.”

“I previously had no idea this was a career option,” she said, “but at that moment I just knew this was an industry I wanted to be part of.”

“You’re able to gain valuable hands-on experience, to see what aspects of the industry you like and best align with your interests, and uncover how a business within the hotel industry functions. You can take your career in any direction you would like to go.”

Cindy excelled in her Bachelor of Business in Hotel Management studies and returned to Southern Cross in 2018 achieving First Class Honours.

“I really appreciate the level of tailored attention that each student receives at Southern Cross and I was challenged to find my true skill set,” Cindy said. “Students get to find where their passion lives as well.”

“There are endless opportunities globally when you embark on this career path and many of the team members and executives across the Pro-invest Group platform and broader industry are testament to this.”

After completing her Bachelor degree, Cindy was offered a two-month paid internship with leading private equity real estate firm, Pro-invest Group – well known for its hotel developments and boasting a $3 billion property portfolio across APAC and Europe.

More than seven years later, she’s still there, though Cindy has never been still . Her determination and attention to detail in a variety of roles led to a custom-made position for one of the firm’s rising stars – ESG Manager.

“There was incredible demand from investors for hotels to become more active contributors in the space of ESG. I started learning how you could integrate sustainable initiatives across the hotel lifecycle from the beginning and through Pro-invest Group’s unique integrated platform of in-house developments, in-house operations and in-house asset management and fund management teams, my knowledge and interest in the space of ESG propelled. The projects that we have since worked on have been incredibly rewarding and impactful, and are very much guided by our One Earth, Countless Experiences ESG ethos and strategy.”

One such project, Reaching for Inclusion through Scholarships and Experiences (RISE) , is a wonderful full-circle moment for the three-time scholarship recipient – a chance to give back to her alma mater.

“I really appreciate the level of tailored attention that each student receives at Southern Cross and I was challenged to find my true skill set.”

Cindy Van Der Wal & Anthony Ursino from Pro-invest Group are seated in a hotel foyer

The recently announced Pro-invest Group RISE Hotel Management Scholarship is designed for Southern Cross students wanting to pursue careers in the Hotel or Tourism sectors. In addition to financial assistance, recipients may also have access to mentorships, paid internships, and potential employment opportunities within Pro-invest Group.

The scholarship program brings together social and environmental aspects of Pro-invest Group’s ESG strategy, as it’s partly funded by the 10-cent container refund scheme operating within the company’s many hotels, consequently, tackling waste, while raising funds for student education.

“Our teams are excited about this initiative and are embracing how complementary the program is to the business and broader industry while playing such an active role in the community by way of scholarships and internship opportunities. A key benefit that we appreciate is that 100% of the funds raised go towards the students receiving these scholarships. That is enormous, because a lot of the time that just isn't the reality,” she said.

“I am proud to see this program come to life! It will be such a great opportunity to track the careers of those graduates and learn what amazing things they do.”

8 Scholarships for Chiropractic Students

Passionate about a career in chiropractic care? Now is the perfect time to explore this field, as employment of chiropractors is projected to grow 11% from 2020 to 2030 , faster than the average for all occupations.

As healthcare evolves, chiropractic care gains recognition for its holistic approach to health and wellness. Patients turn to chiropractors for non-invasive treatments to manage pain and improve quality of life. This growing interest presents a wealth of opportunities for aspiring chiropractors.

This guide will provide a select assortment of popular doctor of chiropractic scholarships, encouraging the search for financial aid options to help alleviate the cost of graduate school .

Importance of scholarships for chiropractic students

It’s no secret that school can cost a pretty penny, and chiropractic school is no different. Tuition fees, textbooks, and living expenses add up, which can result in substantial student debt. But fear not. There are ways to alleviate the costs before your increased salary kicks in after graduation.

Scholarships are available—if you know where to look. Receiving scholarship funding allows students to focus more on their studies and less on their financial concerns. Plus, it can boost a graduate’s resume as earning scholarships shows your achievements through your hard work. If your accomplishments stand out to committees, there’s a good chance employers will give your resume more than a first glance.

8 Doctor of Chiropractic scholarships

Luckily, the growing interest in chiropractic programs has increased competition for financial aid. As more students pursue this field, the availability of scholarships is vital in supporting the educational journey.

Below we’ve gathered eight scholarships for chiropractic students available to attend the program of your choice:

  • The ChiroHealthUSA Foxworth Family Scholarship is awarded to current chiropractic students with a minimum GPA of 2.7. This scholarship provides $15,000 and supports students who demonstrate a commitment to their chiropractic education and community.
  • The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) Scholarships offer various doctor of chiropractic scholarships for students. These scholarships aim to support students in their educational pursuits and professional development.
  • Chiropractic Scholarship Program : The Carol Hall Scholarship program provides financial aid to chiropractic students who have demonstrated academic excellence and a commitment to the field of chiropractic.

State-specific scholarships

Several state chiropractic associations offer scholarships to support students pursuing doctor of chiropractic school education. Here are a few notable examples:

  • Chiropractic Association of Louisiana – William S. Boyd Scholarship . This scholarship is awarded to Louisiana residents enrolled in a chiropractic college who plan to practice in Louisiana. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.75.
  • Ohio Chiropractic Foundation Scholarship . This scholarship is available to students who are members of the Ohio State Chiropractic Association and have completed at least two academic years in a chiropractic school. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and be willing to practice in Ohio after graduation.
  • Illinois Chiropractic Foundation Scholarship . Offered to Illinois residents enrolled in a chiropractic college, this scholarship requires a minimum GPA of 2.75.
  • New Mexico Chiropractic Association – Darrell Atchley Scholarship . This scholarship supports New Mexico residents with a minimum GPA of 2.5 who are in their third trimester or higher in a chiropractic program.
  • Chiropractic Education Assistance Scholarship : Available to Oklahoma residents, this scholarship provides varying amounts based on financial need and academic achievement.

Scholarships provide substantial support to students, helping alleviate the financial burden of their education. It’s heavily encouraged to pursue these opportunities in your respective state, as these pools are smaller than national scholarship pools.

Advance your career in healthcare with a Chiropractic degree. Download our informational sheet and get started today!

Besides general and state-specific scholarships, you can also investigate any program-specific scholarships your school has to offer. For example, University of Bridgeport proudly provides many scholarships to support chiropractic students! Applicants must first be accepted in UB’s DC program and meet certain merit and/or need-based criteria, as part of UB’s commitment to making chiropractic education more accessible and affordable. Students apply through UB’s financial aid office by submitting academic transcripts, a personal statement, and letters of recommendation.

Tips for applying for scholarships

Ready to hit those applications and get that money? Here’s a few tips to keep in mind to catch that cash.

  • Start early. Begin your scholarship search well in advance to allow ample time for preparation and meeting deadlines.
  • Gather necessary materials. Collect transcripts, letters of recommendation, and personal statements ahead of time to streamline the application process.
  • Personalize your application. Tailor your application to highlight your unique qualities and demonstrate a genuine interest in the scholarship.
  • Maintain a formal tone. Adhere to a professional and respectful style while showcasing your personality.
  • Set reminders and deadlines. Use a calendar or planner to keep track of important dates and ensure timely submission of applications.

Above all, when applying for scholarships, remember why you want to join this field. The aging population’s need for non-surgical treatments, plus a rise in integrative healthcare, is driving up demand for chiropractic therapy.

But it isn’t just an older demographic seeking care. Athletes and people with chronic issues have benefited greatly from chiropractic care. Because of the rise in popularity, chiropractic care has reached many different demographics, leading to a diverse cast of specializations, such as pediatrics, sports, and neurology. Chiropractors focus on pain relief, steadily improving mobility, and treating neurological conditions to help patients in various areas of personal and professional health.
