An effective leader embodies admirable traits, some of which are integrity, transparency, communication, humility. A leader without the trust of the people cannot achieve shared goals. The strategy also works in tandem with focus. As a nurse, communication with coworkers and other caregivers is paramount for delivering the best possible care (Meinert, 2019). Therefore, it is crucial to communicate effectively with a diverse range of patients using both verbal and non-verbal cues (American College of Healthcare Executives, 2020).

The ability to learn other common languages besides English will help improve my communication skills with diverse patient groups. For example, I will use the Duo phone App to initiate learning the basics of the Spanish language. The use of applications and professional language educators will further improve my understanding and use of the language. The same process can be applied to learning American Sign Language. Acquiring these skills will improve the ability to connect with others, including patients. It will also help improve interaction with the community. This is important in helping me understand the needs of the people and effect change in healthcare delivery.

Stress has been identified as a prelude to burnout. Therefore, I would also like to strengthen my ability to manage stress. (Amir et al., 2019). As I tackle critical issues as a caregiver and maintain my personal relationships, it is vital to develop efficient strategies to manage stress and anxiety levels better. Failure to do so is detrimental to my health and to the attainment of my mission. To help better manage stress, I will identify the activities and environments that reduce my stress. I will make specific plans to include these activities in my daily schedule and recreate the environments in places to spend most of my time. I will also pay attention to my health and identify and minimize stressors in my life. Prevention is the key to achieving better control of stress. Planning ahead of time and breaking down goals into smaller tasks will reduce stress and improve focus and promote time management (D’Silva, 2019).

Leadership is integral to our society. Every healthcare institution requires a good leader to execute its goals effectively. Identifying strengths and areas for improvement will ensure successful leadership. A good leader possesses and promotes integrity, communicates well, and holds them accountable for continuous growth and improvement.

A leadership philosophy has been defined as "a set of beliefs, values, and principles that strongly influence[s] how we interpret reality and guide our understanding of influencing humans" (Ambler, 2012, p. 77, as cited in Speranza & Pierce, 2019). A leadership philosophy promotes communicative actions and helps a leader develop the capability and capacity cultivate the best human potential.  Reflecting on 10 questions related to personal leader development that we shared in first article ( Preparing to Engage in Leader Development of the Developing the Leader in You series) will help you to better prepare to write a personal leadership philosophy. Below we will discuss why a leadership philosophy is important and provide you with tips that will help you to write your leadership philosophy.

Why a Personal Leadership Philosophy is Important

A leadership philosophy is a "personal roadmap" that translates your beliefs, values, and principles. A leadership philosophy is a foundation for ethical decision-making. Moreover, it guides person's life and work-related concerns.

Tips for how to Develop a Personal Leadership Philosophy

We adapted some strategies from Leadership Paradigms' (2009), Ziskin's (2015), and Speranza and Pierce's (2019) works.

  • Consider who your role models are. How did your role models impact the development of the leader in you?
  • Consider the life events that impacted your leadership style.
  • Identify the leader qualities you are proud of.
  • Determine what is impeding your leader development (i.e., knowledge, people, resources)
  • Reflect on your success in past. How efficient are you at living out your beliefs in your daily life?
  • Consider the SMART goals you set. Determine how you will incorporate these goals into your leadership philosophy. See our previous article .
  • Reflect on your vision of teamwork and team success. Do you see yourself as a team coach? What does teamwork mean to you?
  • Think about different styles of leadership . What leadership approach fits your values, beliefs, and principles? For example, servant leadership, transformational leadership, or others?

Deierlein (2015) recommended the following essential components of a personal leadership philosophy:

  • Your core values (includes your purpose)
  • Your work style (includes your communication style)
  • Your expectations
  • Behavior you will not tolerate
  • Your professional priorities
  • How you want to receive feedback

Be creative when developing your leadership philosophy. Use essential components of the leadership philosophy recommended by Deierlein (2015) as a start. Add additional components that reflect your values, beliefs, and principles.

The DDI's 2023 Global Leadership Forecast shows that we're facing the lowest point of leadership quality in a decade. 

Only 40% of those surveyed said their company had high-quality leaders. 

At the same time, Paul Michelman, the Editor-in-chief of MIT Sloan Management Review, said , “The world does not lack for management ideas.” 

Thousands of books and articles tell you how to become a good leader.

But to be a good leader, you’ll need more than external guidance; you also need to search inside yourself. 

Having a leadership philosophy can help with this. 

Let’s start by understanding the concept.

What is Leadership Philosophy?

There are many ways to define leadership philosophy. 

I love how George Ambler, a former Senior Executive Partner with Gartner Executive Programs, describes it: “a set of beliefs, values, and principles that strongly influences how we interpret reality and guide our understanding of influencing humans.” 

“Leadership philosophy is a set of beliefs, values, and principles that strongly influences how we interpret reality and guide our understanding of influencing humans. It’s our philosophy, our understanding, and interpretation of leadership, that affects how we react to people, events, and situations around us.” - George Ambler, former Senior Executive Partner with Gartner Executive Programs.

A leadership philosophy is the guidance you give yourself on how to be a good leader. 

Writing a leadership philosophy helps you reflect on your values and the leader you want to become. 

When complete, the philosophy will be the compass for your decision-making as a leader. 

With that in mind, in this article, I will share the benefits of having a leadership philosophy and how to write one for yourself, with complete guides and examples!

Why is it Important to Have a Leadership Philosophy?

For the Leader

Having a leadership philosophy is helpful for any leader for several key reasons:

  • A chance to reflect: To write a leadership philosophy, you will need to take the time to sit down and think hard about what truly matters to you as a leader.
  • Guide decision-making: When facing difficult choices, having a leadership philosophy written down will help you make decisions that align with your values.
  • Job promotion: When you can clearly state your leadership values with your management (and, of course, act accordingly!), there's a higher chance that they'll find you capable of a higher position (This even applies to people who want to become first-time managers ).

For the Team

A team will always benefit from a conscious and consistent leader with clear values and goals:

  • Build trust: Leaders who can merge their personal values with their professional role receive greater trust from their team members. This is especially important in remote and hybrid work, where building team connections is often challenging .
  • Deliver better results: Because trust is the foundation of great team collaboration, communication, and team dynamics .

The Difference between a Leadership Philosophy and Leadership Styles

Leadership styles are a well-studied subject, and you probably have come across or identified yourself with some of the most common leadership styles , such as authoritarian, democratic, laissez-faire, or transactional.

On the other hand, a leadership philosophy should be highly personalized . There are no categories to choose from, and you write your own leadership manifesto.

While leadership styles describe how a leader makes decisions and delegates tasks, a leadership philosophy tells you its owner's values, beliefs, and goals.

But with all those differences, there is one thing they have in common:

Both leadership styles and philosophies are fluid and change over time as the leader grows. 

Essential Components of Leadership Philosophy (+ Template)

If you're new to leadership philosophies and don't know where to start, below are some suggested components:

  • Your definition of leadership
  • Your core values in making decisions
  • Your core values in managing people

10 Steps to Write Your Own Leadership Philosophy Statement

The first three steps will help you reflect on your leadership values:

1. Think about the leaders in your life

Sometimes, it's easier to look into another person's behaviors than ourselves, so as a warm-up, think about the leaders you have encountered in your life. 

Some leaders you met may have positively influenced you:

  • Who is a leader you admire? 
  • What about them that inspires you?

Others may show you how not to be a leader:

  • What is a negative experience you had with another leader?
  • If you were them, what would you do differently? 

Try to note your answers to the above questions before moving to the next steps!

2. Reflect on your three developmental points

There are major events in our lives that shape who we are, our beliefs, and our values. So, in the next step, let's write down your defining moments in life, including:

  • Two lows: Two significant challenges you have gone through.
  • One high: A positive experience you hold close to your heart.

For each of these moments, think about how they have:

  • Changed you as a person
  • Influenced your leadership 

3. Vision the leader the future world needs

A leadership philosophy is not just about your past and present but also about your future. This makes it worth wondering, “What types of leaders does the future world need?”

In his insightful book Leading in the Digital World: How to Foster Creativity, Collaboration and Inclusivity , Dr. Amit Mukherjee points out the key attributes of a future Leader of Creativity:

  • Have strong ethical principles
  • Value knowledge, imagination, and fast learning
  • A contributing member of creative efforts, not a facilitator
  • Inclusive and empathetic
  • Embrace different opinions
  • Let information flow freely through their network
  • Provide psychological safety to their team members

If you're a leader of a hybrid or remote team building a digital product, you may find the above characteristics highly relevant to you. 

So, which ones would you emphasize in your leadership philosophy?

Steps 4 to 7 will guide you to come up with the answers for the blanks in our leadership philosophy template:

4. Define leadership in your own words

The first sentence of your leadership philosophy is your definition of leadership. What does it mean to lead? 

The answer may depend on your leadership style:

  • For democratic leaders , you may think leading is to guide your team members to a common goal by listening to and combining everyone's perspectives.
  • For transformational leaders , you may consider leadership as motivating and inspiring your team members to achieve their full potential.
  • For delegative leaders , you may think to be a leader is to trust your people to do their best work and let the group make decisions without much involvement. 

5. What are the achievements you want to be remembered for?

Amit's book states that the average manager spends two or three years in each position, with the 2022 US Bureau of Labor Statistics reporting up to 6 years.

What achievements do you want people to remember about you after those years? 

What are the goals you want to achieve as a leader?

These goals can be work-related, such as:

  • Leading the team to achieve a certain KPI ( key performance indicators )
  • Restructuring the team in a way that makes it more efficient

Or they can be more people-oriented, like:

  • Upgrading the skills of all team members
  • Building a positive team dynamics

6. Your core values when making decisions:

No matter how new your company's product or service is, you're impacting others' lives through your product or service. 

You want to ensure you always have the correct guiding principles when making decisions. 

What are your core values that relate to your team's product or service?

They can be:

  • Honesty: To always tell the truth to your customers
  • Inclusivity: To design for disadvantaged minorities
  • Curiosity: To always learn new things and question what you have known
  • Responsibility: To build products that genuinely do good for people and for the planet
  • And many more!

Now, let's turn towards your team:

What are the fundamentals of creating an effective relationship with your team? 

For example, you may say:

  • Respect: To treat your team members the way you want to be treated
  • Care: To show that you care beyond words and make decisions with compassion 
  • The belief in the best in people: To forgive your people and not hold on to their mistakes

After you have a draft of your leadership philosophy, you can go to the last three steps:

8. Seek feedback

No matter how well we know ourselves, there will be things we can't be completely objective about.

Before you complete your leadership philosophy, send it to your mentors, close friends, or team members for input.

The feedback may not be easy to read, but it will improve your philosophy.

Remember that you don't have to change everything according to people's feedback. After all, this is your philosophy.

9. Perfect your leadership philosophy and share it with your team 

You can keep your leadership philosophy private, but sharing it with the team offers great benefits:

  • Firstly, you create a better understanding between you and your team members.
  • Secondly, your team may find you more authentic and trustworthy .
  • Thirdly, your people can remind you to act according to your words. 

Before you share your leadership philosophy with the team, check the common issues below:

  • Using too many buzzwords may be deemed insincere.
  • Be aware of the current atmosphere within the team to ensure you share at a suitable time.
  • Be careful when using phrases like “I promise to” because many things may not be within your control.
  • Ask yourself what you want your people to think and feel after reading your leadership philosophy.

10. Review and revise from time to time

Your leadership philosophy is alive and constantly changing, just as you are!

So look back at your philosophy occasionally and edit it over time.

“This comes towards the end of the curriculum when students learn leadership styles plus study the Jesuit Charisms,” Williams explains. A charism is a gift of grace, not for personal gain, but for the benefit of others. Examples would include education of the whole person, Magis (or more), plus helpful leadership insights. Students analyze their core values, attitudes, and real-life experiences during their degree studies and develop a personal leadership philosophy that can help them become more effective leaders and grow in their professional lives. Finally, students are asked to apply their unique leadership philosophies in their everyday lives.

“Your personal leadership philosophy is not abstract ,” Williams says. “Students are encouraged to write a clear and concise statement, so they have it down in a physical form.” He adds:

Publishing a PLP can occur informally, such as sharing within a leadership team or formally posting on a LinkedIn profile or at the top of a resume. In addition, the accountability found when sharing the PLP helps the leader maintain a realistic approach to how they behave and respond while leading in action.

How to write your personal leadership philosophy

The five most dominant themes of talent from my StrengthsFinder Assessment are input, individualization, relator, strategic, and leaner (Gallup Access, n.d.). What makes me stand out in the input theme is the ability to seek out innovative ideas and plans of visionary people and apply them make mental leaps into the expected future. Within the individualization talent, I am intrigued with the distinctive qualities of individuals enabling me to strike conversations with others with the core purpose of understanding their hopes, successes, goals, experiences, talents, interests, and strengths. Within the strategic theme, I employ language and vocabulary to express innovative ideas and alternative ways to resolve a problem in a team setup. As a talented learner, I have a great desire to learn and continuously improve myself, and lastly, as a talented relator, I find satisfaction in establishing close relationships and working hard with others to accomplish a set goal (Gallup Access, n.d.). Based on the results of my StrengthsFinder, the two core values I would like to strengthen are the capacity to influence and communicate effectively with others. The capacity to communicate effectively is a fundamental skill for nurse leaders. According to Jankelová and  Joniaková (2021), effective communication and influencing skills enable nurse leaders to create and promote positive work environments associated with improved patient outcomes and high staff satisfaction. Authoritative leaders act as they want their followers to act. They take on the role of a mentor and provide personal guidance to each of their followers. Authoritative leaders assume a hands-on approach, as their style of leadership necessitates building relationships with each of their followers.

Transactional Leadership

Transactional leaders manage within a structured organization, complete with rewards and punishments. They create incentives for their followers to complete tasks and perform their job. Transactional leaders establish clear responsibilities for each employee, explicitly aligning their effort with rewards and punishments.

Participative Leadership

Participative leaders engage their followers in collaborative problem solving and decision making, with reduced emphasis on individuality in favor of teamwork. These leaders encourage and empower employees to present their ideas, take initiative, and operate as leaders within the team.

Servant Leadership

Servant leaders prioritize their followers’ needs over their own. They develop close-knit relationships with their followers, regardless of their position in the organization. Servant leadership focuses on making ethical decisions considerate of every individual in the organization.

5. Ask others in your network for advice

You now have a strong sense of your leadership style. Next, ask others in your network — such as former co-workers, mentors, or employees — for advice. How do they view you as a leader? What feedback do they have for your leadership style?

Asking others tunes you in to parts of your leadership you may not fully recognize. According to a Gitnux report, 50%-70% of people have a large blind spot that impacts their leadership and relationships.

6. Make your leadership philosophy clear and actionable

You can now assemble all your research and thoughts into a leadership philosophy. Remember to make each part of it clear and actionable, whether it’s one sentence or one page. To do this, consider:

  • Writing short, succinct sentences
  • Including example actions
  • Explaining how you handle problems

Again, you do not necessarily need to build out an extensive leadership philosophy for it to work. This also depends on your leadership style — a shorter philosophy leaves room for flexibility while a longer one creates structure.

However, you can take bits and pieces you like from each to form your own leadership style. “As a leader, I aim to prioritize the needs of the organization over any individual needs — including my own. I will build personal relationships with my team members by hosting regular one-on-one meetings and communicating with them as partners rather than followers.

The CliftonStrengths Assessment is an effective tool for the personal evaluation of leadership strengths. The purpose of this paper is to describe my core values, mission and vision, CliftonStrengths Assessment summary, behaviors that should be strengthened, and a plan to achieve my vision.

A Description of My Core Values

The core values of a leader highlight the priority principles as far as leadership and team organization are concerned. My core values include connectivedness, positivity, achiever, harmony, and consistency. The implication is that I believe in cohesion and approaching issues with a positive mind. As Rawlinson et al. (2021) noted, cohesion is instrumental in teamwork and promotes interprofessional collaboration. The same spirit is crucial when leading diverse health care teams. Organizational leaders are unique, and their core values and individual strengths differentiate them. My top five themes, as derived from the CliftonStrengths Assessment, include connectivedness, positivity, achiever, harmony, and consistency. Broadly, these traits are my dominant values since they describe my priority leadership principles. Connectedness has much to do with creating links and believing that each individual is part of a bigger system. It helps leaders to promote systems thinking where constituent parts work together within the context of larger systems (McNab et al., 2020). Positivity implies leading with enthusiasm, while the harmony theme denotes the commitment to address problems by finding common ground. The achiever theme is crucial for goal-centered leadership, while consistency ensures that leaders remain focused on their objectives and tasks.

Behaviors that I Wish to Strengthen

Personal improvement is essential for individuals looking forward to becoming good leaders. I would like to strengthen the harmony and connectedness aspects of my leadership. The current workplace is highly diverse, and conflicts are inevitable. Harmonious problem-solving will be crucial for the cohesion and energy of such teams. Positivity implies individuals looking upon a leader for guidance. Improving this trait is essential for transformational leadership to thrive.

Development Plan

The best way to improve the harmony aspect is to improve problem-solving skills. This can be achieved by integrating creativity and critical thinking in problem-solving and being wary of personal bias when addressing conflicts. Positivity can be improved by practicing emotional intelligence, which helps leaders to develop effective personal relationships with colleagues and other team members (Lambert, 2021; Stalter & Mota, 2018). Achieving my vision of progressive growth as a leader requires continuous learning, mentorship, and interaction with diverse teams. I can achieve this by advancing my education and joining appropriate professional nursing organizations for exposure, resource facilitation, and career guidance.

Health care organizations require forward-thinking leaders for healthy work environments. Understanding personal strengths and applying them effectively is critical to creating healthy work environments in health care facilities. Many of us can think of leaders we have come to admire, be they historical figures, pillars of the industry we work in, or leaders we know personally. The leadership of individuals such as Abraham Lincoln and Margaret Thatcher has been studied and discussed repeatedly. However, you may have interacted with leaders you feel demonstrated equally competent leadership without ever having a book written about their approaches.

What makes great leaders great? Every leader is different, of course, but one area of commonality is the leadership philosophy that great leaders develop and practice. A leadership philosophy is basically an attitude held by leaders that acts as a guiding principle for their behavior. While formal theories on leadership continue to evolve over time, great leaders seem to adhere to an overarching philosophy that steers their actions.

These are unique principles that every person in leadership should have and present to their team to follow. These philosophies are critical since they can help guide one through hard moments by making significant and small decisions since these philosophers help act as unwritten policies once shared in the team (Andrews, 2016). Several people struggle to understand the type and kind of leaders they are as well as their leadership identity. Therefore, this writing piece will help explore and discover my philosophies in leadership by having a deep reflection on my core values, mission statement, and Clifton strengths assessments, and creating a plan of development to help accomplish my vision.

Core Values

Core values help to dictate the principles of leadership behavior. One of the most outstanding qualities nurses need to have is the quality of care. This is what unites nurses and patients and transforms the nursing profession. Thus, caring is deemed a core value for the nurses who are practicing it holistically. It helps in promoting health and healing among patients. Nonetheless, nurse leaders must have caring quality because caring is a quality that needs to be applied to the patient and the team members who are continually helping to achieve the patient goals (Laird-Magee, Gayle & Preiss, 2015).

Another core value that is part of me is diversity. I have been practicing this value every day in my life, both at home and at work. This is because diversity helps to enhance individual creativity and provide insights into the culture. It helps to remind me every moment that in nursing, it’s not a matter of one size fits it all. Awareness of diversity is critical in the nursing profession since it helps to acknowledge and appreciate differences in individual’s attitudes, thoughts, beliefs, and priorities in individuals’ health-seeking behaviors in the population (Dyess, Prestia & Smith, 2015).

This helps to reflect the nursing profession’s contract with society and the sole responsibility nurses have to act per the robust code of ethics that guides the nursing profession. This helps the nurses be aware of their attitudes, thoughts, priorities, and beliefs while providing care to individual patients, their families, and the entire community (Zambrano, 2019). Several pieces of training are ongoing that helps to ensure critical patient quality service care is provided. It is important to note that essential healthcare issues are increasing, such as healthcare service costs, complexities of regulations, shortages of labor in hospitals, comorbidities associated with old age, and thoughts in solving these problems. In doing so, leaders must be able to develop new consciousness in helping them approach and solve healthcare problems (Speranza & Pierce, 2019).

Vision/Mission Statement

I had to reflect and do inner searching on myself for my core purpose to help in identifying my vision and mission as a professional nurse. My mission as a nurse in the profession is to devote my entire life to providing quality and compassionate health care services to every patient, family, and community (Zambrano, 2019). This will be provided through excellence in good leadership, education, and professional practice. I appreciate the differences among people of all ethnicities and backgrounds, celebrate diverse perspectives, and embrace the differences between ideas. As an individual, I am thoroughly committed to providing the highest quality care that is individualized and educates to promote the health of the individuals and the entire society.

Clifton Strengths Assessment Results

My top themes from the Clifton strength assessment result can be summarized into: deliberative, analytical, relator, individualization, and intellection. The theme of deliberative informs me that I am a person who is serious and private and likes careful and deep thinking. Besides, it indicates that I let other people begin a conversation, and I listen to them, observe and keep thoughts to myself (Zambrano, 2019).

Behaviors to Strengthen

I am a person who is known to be quiet among many people. Because of this, people have often mistaken my quietness for being “shy.” And unable to initiate interactions. However, my siblings do describe me accurately as being a reserved person. Besides, my reservation has been able to make limit my list of friends. As a social being, this has worked against me in several situations, both at home and hospital setting. Secondly, I am known to be “hot-tempered” by both colleagues and family members. This has made people develop fear and choose what they want to discuss with me. Because of this character, only a few people have been able to understand me. Therefore, these two behaviors are in my list of actions that need to be changed and strengthened to help cope with patients’ and colleagues’ diverse environment (Speranza & Pierce, 2019).

This character of being “reserved” has made people underrate me. Therefore, I would like to improve this behavior and find ways to enable other people in my environment to understand me better. To achieve my vision and mission in the nursing profession, I will be forced to practice modern nursing evidence-based practice. I need to acknowledge that nursing goes beyond the patient, and the family members are equally affected by the patient illness. Therefore, I need to plan for diverse care that will be holistic. For example, family members need to be incorporated into care to ensure that their anxiety is alleviated.

            Mission and vision statements also form part of a leader’s philosophy (Miles & Scott, 2018). As part of my philosophy, my vision is to possess the ability to serve patients through holistic care in patient care settings. This vision implies that as a nurse, I purpose to ensure that the patients and their family members have better interaction with the healthcare professionals and get the best patient care in the hospital. My mission as a leader is to enhance organizational growth and create effective relationships through various aspects such as engagement, visionary leadership, and inspiration.

Analysis of the CliftonStengths Assessment

The assessment accomplished on StrengthFinder Assessment revealed various interesting results about me. The top five themes, as revealed from the assessment, include learner, achiever, input, connectedness, and self-assurance. The learner theme implies that I have an incredible desire to learn and always long to improve continuously and that learning excites me more than the outcome (Gallup Inc., 2022). In addition, being a learner means thinking intensely whenever working on tasks that match areas of expertise. The next theme is an achiever. Individuals regarded as achievers have a great deal of hard work and stamina and take substantial satisfaction from being productive and busy. It also means taking pleasure in launching new initiatives and having the knowledge of how to get the projects moving forward. In addition, this theme goes with adopting a serious-minded approach whenever engaging in activities such as evaluating facts, data, evidence, research results, and the accuracy of reports.

The next top theme is input. This theme involves having a craving to know more and collect and archive every kind of information. Besides, the input theme also means that I usually eagerly welcome opportunities to think about philosophies, theories, and ideas. In the event that I have to express opposition or when arguing a point, then I gain an advantage by using professional, academic, or highly technical terms. The next theme is connectedness. The theme of connectedness entails having faith in the links between all things and having a belief that there are few coincidences and that there must be a reason for every event (Gallup Inc., 2022). The last theme revealed from the assessment is self-assurance. Self-assurance involves feeling confident in the ability to manage personal lives. Therefore, I possess an inner compass that offers confidence that the decisions are right.

Key Behaviors That I wish to Strengthen

It is vital to strengthen various behaviors for effective leadership. One of the behaviors is building a relationship. It is important to build relationships such as therapeutic relationships, which are key in patient care settings. Improved patient outcomes also depend on how the professionals relate to their patients. Therefore, this is a behavior that will be important to develop. I should also strengthen my ability to give others a second chance. This quality is important in the patient care settings. In most cases, disagreements occur in the patient care settings, which need solving (Stanley et al., 2022). As part of the solutions, individuals should be ready to give others a second chance, especially those in the wrong, through various conflict resolution avenues

The Development Plan

Improving the indicated behaviors require an adequate plan. One of the strategies is reading literature on improving relationships, such as therapeutic relationships (Hartley et al., 2020). Such a step will help me acquire enhanced knowledge on how to develop appropriate relationships. Participating in simulation activities will also be used as part of the plan. It is also important to create a plan that will help me achieve my personal vision. Enhancing organizational change will require that I embrace change initiatives. Therefore, as part of the plan, I intend to engage in change efforts in the organization. I also plan to take an active role as an advocate for the organization.

It is important for leaders to have leadership philosophies that can be used as a guide for leadership. The philosophy can contain personal goals, mission, and vision. This write-up has explored core values, personal mission, and vision as part of the leadership philosophy.

Leadership Philosophies

Leadership is an important skill that nurses utilize to influence others. Leaders are either born with leadership skills or learn them from their environment. Health organizations that have effective leaders demonstrate excellence in their service provision. I believe that leaders should demonstrate specific leadership values in their organizations. One of the leadership values that one should possess is respect. Effective leaders respect others. They respect the ideas, views, diversity, and backgrounds of others in their organizations. Effective leaders also value transparency. They ensure that organizational tasks are undertaken in a manner that allows scrutiny and understanding of the use of resources (Alvinius, 2017). Effective leaders also strive to make difference in those they lead. They transform others through instilling confidence and ensuring that they develop the right knowledge and skills for their success. The last value that I believe leaders should possess is integrity (Hassmiller & Pulcini, 2020). Leaders should demonstrate integrity in the ethical decisions that they make and fulfill their promises and expectations.

My mission statement as a leader is to promote the growth and development in those I lead. I wish to ensure that I transform positively the behaviors, knowledge, and attitudes of those I lead. I intend to achieve this goal by recognizing their abilities and providing them the opportunities to explore them. I also intend to lead the as their example. I wish to become their role model in adopting the needed professional behaviors that contribute to their growth and development.

The CliftonStrenghts Assessment revealed a number of strengths that describe my leadership abilities.

Assignment Personal Leadership Philosophies

The top two strengths that were identified from the assessment were that I am analytical and deliberative. People who are analytical explore situations before coming up with a conclusion. They collect facts about events to aid in the development of sound decisions. Analytical people are critical and creative thinkers. They do not consider events as they appear but seek to unearth the factors that might affect them. Analytical people also explore the existing alternatives and select one that is associated with optimum benefits to the involved parties. My other strength that became evident from the assessment is that I am deliberative. Deliberative people are careful in what they do. They are vigilant on the approaches to decision-making. They operate on the assumptions that their world is highly unpredictable. As a result, decisions should be made with a consideration of unforeseen events that might affect the situation (Grossman & Valiga, 2020). An effective use of these strengths will enable me to make ethical decisions in my leadership roles.

One of the behaviors that I wish to strengthen is effective communication skills. I wish to strengthen my ability to communicate effectively with others. I wish to learn effective communication styles that I can utilize to persuade those I lead. I also wish to learn more of the ways in which I can utilize both verbal and non-verbal communication skills to understand others better. The other area I wish to strengthen is time management. I wish to learn about the effective ways in which I can complete my tasks in a timely manner. I am always a procrastinator. Procrastination has often led to untimely completion of my assigned tasks. Therefore, I wish to explore the ways in which I can management my time effectively.

The development plan that I intend to pursue to strengthen the above behaviors is enrolling for professional courses on effective communication skills and time management for leaders. The courses will impart me with the knowledge and skills that I need to be an effective leader. I will also attend seminars and training on effective leadership to build on my abilities in these areas. Therefore, I believe that an exploration of these alternatives will enable me to strengthen the above behaviors for my professional and personal development.

You must proofread your paper. Weekly Participation

Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately. The mission and vision are the core elements of my leadership values. My personal leadership mission statement defines my purpose and objectives as a leader. The vision statement focus on my personal goals and aspirations as a leader (Roupnel et al., 2019). The vision and the mission statements are meant to ensure that my leadership approach remains uplifting and inspiring. My personal vision and mission statement are:

Based on the CliftonStrengths assessment, I tend to employ the qualities of restorative theme due to my ability to develop solutions to problems that arise. I strive to ensure that I refer to information sources and consult materials such as publications in order to overcome the challenges that I encounter both in the work setting and in my personal life. I am constantly in search of ways that would best make me a better person and a better leader. For this reason, I would wish that other people learn from me about the need to investigate a situation at hand. This means that it is in the best interest to learn from the failures and challenges experienced. Also, I tend to be a learner, given that I strive to acquire additional knowledge and skills from the daily experiences and interactions within and out of the work setting. Effective leadership style applied in the health care industry is essential in strengthening and integrating health care delivery. In the recent past, improved quality of services offered in healthcare institutions often depended on the input of the nurses. Description of Core Values

            The achiever theme implies that I have a great deal of stamina and work hard to meet the expected satisfaction. This strength positively impacts creating a good working environment (Duggan et al., 2015). For instance, achievers are ready to make their working areas look neat and acquire new knowledge and skills to improve the outcome. People portraying this trait always use their common sense to solve problems that, if left, could cause a great challenge at work. Leaders portraying these traits have the power to help others learn to meet the expected goal.

            I am an authentic leader because of the leadership tasks have been handling in the past. My personal leadership brand is that of an authentic leader who continually defines the need and direction of an organization. This leadership brand delights in assisting others to do the right thing. They are always innovative, a quality recognized via their ability to set direction and create creative ideas that inspire others. My vision statement is “To lead with others in mind.” This vision aligns with my leadership philosophy traits.

Analysis of your CliftonStrengths

            The results show that I am an achiever, learner, responsible, analytical, and a believer. I am also a learner. This trait implies a great desire to learn new things that make me unique in my work and relationship with others. This trait also makes me constantly desire to learn and improve on the things that I find exciting (Stoker et al., 2019). This theme is significant in improving my relationship at the workplace as it gives me the time to learn other people’s behavior and find a common interest that would improve unity at work.

            I am also responsible. This theme shows I am talented in taking psychological ownership of anything I say I will do. I am also committed to values such as loyalty and honesty. People with this personality are determined to be victorious. A leader in healthcare institutions needs such a theme as it allows them to support other employees in meeting the desired outcome (Subramony et al., 2018). They also feel afraid to fail and thus will ensure that everything supporting success is in place to ensure the desired outcome is met.

            Analytical is another leadership philosophy that I possess. I am fond of looking for reasons and causes of the things around me. I am also fast in thinking about factors that affect my situation. These traits show that I am ready to adopt an option that would allow me to upgrade and improve my situation and relationship with the people around me at my working place. Lastly, I am a believer. This shows that I am talented in believing in unchanging core values. These values are evident when I define the purpose of my love (Mwesigwa et al., 2020). My talents drive me, and I can push my people to meet my expected standards.

            I want to strengthen my analytical and believer themes. While these are part of my strengths, I need to do more on analyzing situations and believing in people to incorporate into my team. Some people might misuse my belief in them, and it would show that I did not have a better analysis of boarding such people.

How to Improve on the Two Behaviors

            I will attend seminars on leadership skills that will improve my analytical skills n dealing with people. Besides, these seminars will act as the main source of skills for analyzing my workmates and workplaces to develop a measure that will allow me to meet my expected outcome (Mwesigwa et al., 2020). I will also take short courses on leadership to strengthen these two traits.

You made great points in your post. You shared how compassion fatigue can make it hard to be empathetic. Oktay and Ozturk (2022) share how compassion fatigue can negatively impact patient care and satisfaction. They also share how nurses are mostly affected by this type of fatigue versus other professions and that risk factors for it are feedback that is insufficient, inadequate resources, and personal distress (Oktay & Ozturk, 2022). I believe that having too many patients, too many stressors on the job, and lack of time can contribute to it even though many nurses, I feel, do truly intend to help patients the best way that they can. 

I agree with what you shared about how being charismatic, friendly, and easy to talk to will allow people to approach you more and trust you. I have found having these qualities do invite patients to share more about themselves, even issues personally and emotionally that they are experiencing, that may be affecting them at that time. It has also made it easy for friends to share and be more open with me as well.

I agree that emotional intelligence is connected to transformational leadership and that you do learn to understand and guide your feelings. Having emotional intelligence helps to respond to the feelings of other people in addition to oneself (Gransberry, 2022). Strengths Assessment Results

    My Strength Finder assessment results were: strategic, ideation, command, activator, and input (Gallup, 2023).  The

strategic strength is that the finding was the least surprising.  Being strategic allows me to weed through data to find

solutions to problems.  I often look at a situation unbiasedly and determine the best course of action.  Ideation works in

conjunction with strategy.  Ideation allows me constantly search for connections.  The command strength allows me to take

charge and be confrontational but is also interpreted as opinionated and intimidating.  Activator works well with strategic

and ideation strengths.  I have the compulsion to act when I see a need.  This strength can also be a weakness as I am often

spontaneous and do not thoroughly think through possible effects.  Input was the last strength identified in my assessment.  

My inquisitiveness makes me find ideas, concepts, objects, and people fascinating.  

Areas to Strengthen

    Guillemin and Nicholas (2022) define core values as the “essential values by which a person measures their life” and as the

“moral imperatives that people are unwilling to compromise.”  The core values that I would like to improve, based on this

assessment, are balance and personal improvement.  As a neurodivergent adult, I was not surprised that many of my results

aligned with common traits of those with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.  I constantly struggle for self-

improvement and growth because many of my strengths focus on my love of action and problem-solving.  Balance and self-

improvement are essential for me to offset my big ideas with the expectations of my society.

    The main strengths that I would like to improve are command and activator.  By improving my command strength, I can

better steadily and reassure others during high stress and crises (Rath, 2007).  The activator strength can assist me in turning

thoughts into action (Rath, 2007). 

    The activator strength also has the characteristic of being impatient (Rath, 2007).  This assessment made me more aware

that my need for action also lends to my impatience.  Command has the characteristics of being intimidating (Rath, 2007). 

This assessment highlighted that, at times, my intense opinions could come off to others as intimidating.

    This assessment was valuable in giving insight into my strengths and areas that I can improve.  The results and report

highlighted how I could utilize my strengths and how others perceive those strengths.

The results indicate that restorative is my top-ranked strength. The results indicate that I am adept at dealing with problems by identifying symptoms and finding the solution. People who have this dominant strength have an inclination for upgrading and improving ideas. Usually, my focus is on overcoming limitations. I have always been a good student because I am dedicated to understanding concepts and theories. Indeed, restorative strength reflects a commitment to doing things right. In practice, I prefer approaches that directly address the needs of each person. Indeed, the results indicate I appreciate the skills, ideas, and goals that each person brings to a group.  Since I am a keen observer of people’s strengths, I find it easier to work with them. I am also good at finding new ways for people to cooperate. Equally, important, I am well aware of the enhancements I have to make to improve my performance.

The deliberative theme indicates that I take decision-making seriously. Deliberative people are usually reserved and prefer to share their ideas with a select group of people they trust (Royal & Huckel, 2019). The results indicate that I only offer compliments to people who deserve them. On occasion, I provide limited insight into my beliefs, knowledge, or desires. Still, I can be sociable when I am with my peers. Moreover, I assess people carefully to ensure that they are credible. My deliberative nature has resulted in a careful decision-making process.

The connectedness theme indicates that I believe in the linkage between things/people. People who are exceptionally talented in connectedness believe that they have ties or connections with the people interact with. Certainly, I believe there is a greater force beyond humanity in this world. Connectedness is associated with a sense that one is part of something greater. It also enables me to interact with a wide range of people. I remain connected with old friends, classmates, and colleagues. Being connected means accepting mysterious things.

Analytical is the lowest-ranked strength. The strength indicates that I have the ability to identify factors that affect any given situation. Analytical individuals have the ability to identify patterns in data. I have the ability to understand how facts relate to one another.

In addition, I prefer to work with precise information to achieve results. I stand out because people are impressed by my ability to identify trends and patterns. Furthermore, I usually take time to make decisions because the analytical process is thorough. Being analytical is a strength that is associated with thoroughness in decision-making. Besides, focusing on numerical data makes it easier to identify areas that need improvements. Moreover, I have a history of thoroughly examining other people’s ideas or theories to ensure that their claims are verifiable.

Two Core Values

Compassion is one of the core values I would like to improve. The core value involves developing a genuine need for others. Compassion creates trust because it allows people to appreciate the challenges others struggle with. At the same time, improving compassion will also improve my ability to collaborate with others to achieve common goals. Compassion can also help one to build strong relationships with others. Undoubtedly, compassion improves my ability to work with others.

I would also prefer to improve my restorative values. Improving this core value will help to improve my problem-solving skills. Working on restorative skills can help to provide me with a sense of growth. The most effective way of developing restorative skills is to use them every day. In addition, it is important to have a firm grasp of my area of expertise to enable me to identify the underlying problems and how to resolve them. Core Strengths

One of the strengths I would like to work on is that of relator. The relator strength implies one’s ability to develop close relationships with others (Cooke, 2021). I am usually intrigued by the unique qualities of each person. However, I do not develop strong relationships with others. Being able to tune into other people’s feelings makes it easier to build strong relationships. So, I plan to deepen relationships by paying more attention to other people’s feelings, fears, and needs. In addition, I plan to improve my ability to build relationships with people from different backgrounds. In the world we live in, work environments are characterized by diversity.  People with this strength believe that relationships are essential for the attainment of common goals.

I would like to improve my analytical abilities. Although analytical was ranked as my lowest theme, I would prefer to be the one of the leading themes. My career depends on my ability to be to solve problems by searching for patterns and connections. Therefore, I aim to focus on how outcomes fit with theories. Usually, I am presented with a lot of information, so I need to have an analytical mindset to make effective decisions.

Creativity is one of my ideal characteristics. In the future, I plan to work on creativity because it can help to improve my core strengths. Creative strengths include being intuitive, perceptive, open-minded, and passionate. Creativity allows one to find unique solutions to problems. Additionally, creative people have unique insights that enhance their problem-solving skills. Creativity can be integrated with analytical skills to improve my ability to find solutions.
