M Tech program: Admission to the M Tech program is offered only for the July session.

Ph. D program: Admissions to the PhD program is typically done for the July session. However, a limited number of topic/field specific admissions may be made for the January session as well.

The admission process starts with filing the online applications at the IISc admissions  website . Candidates are shortlisted for interview based on either the scores in one of the national exams or qualification. The detailed eligibility criteria can be found here. The background of students admitted to CeNSE in the past have been mostly from ECE, Physics, Mechanical, Materials disciplines, although there are students pursuing PhD/ MTech at CeNSe whose undergraduate degrees are in areas as diverse as biotechnology or biomedical instrumentation. Shortlisted candidates have to appear for an interview at CeNSE for selection. The interview typically consists of two to three sections, namely math and analytical questions such as plotting functions, basic calculus, differential equations etc, questions related to courses taken during their UG and PG degrees, and questions probing their research aptitude. Admission is based primarily on the performance in the interview and the results are generally announced 2-3 weeks after the interview.

Post Admission M Tech

Post admission ph. d.

Students typically take between 4-8 courses depending on the prior preparation to gain a solid background in their topic of research. They should maintain a minimum CGPA of 7 throughout the course program. A major step towards the completion of a successful PhD is to pass the comprehensive exam which is held before completing two years in the PhD program. The comprehensive exam is evaluated by a committee of examiners from inside and outside the department. The committee evaluates if sufficient progress has been made towards the research goal. The exam also tests your grasp of the material discussed in your course work. After successfully passing the comprehensive exams, students focus on the research problem intensively leading to the successful defense of the PhD thesis typically within 5 years of joining the program.

Student Reviews for IISc Bangalore

Best college for research.

The faculty members have the best knowledge of their respective fields and modest at the same time. They will even clear the silliest doubts of students. They work really hard, sometimes, more than their students. The course curriculum might seem too basic (after you complete it), but you will need to learn on your own which will help you attain autonomy.

IISC Bangalore Ph.D Experience

I am pursuing Doctor of Philosophy in Chemical Engineering and will get a ph.d degree in the year 2026. Till now, the experience of academics ghas been awesome. Curriculum gets updated on a regular basis and contains all the recent developments in the field.

Outstanding college

The faculty members here are very cooperative. They are very helpful towards us. Every teacher has good experience in their own respective fields. Some faculty members are even part of some types of big research projects. The college curriculum are relevant which is totally based on new education policy.

Share your experience with others

Please tell me the difference between mtech and mtech research in mechanical engineering at iisc banglore. also the selection procedure of both of the courses.

Hope you are doing great.

Answering to your question, Initially, there is no distinction in terms of value and scope between these degrees. Both M.E and M.Tech offer similar prospects and future opportunities, just as B.E and B.Tech do.

M.E is a course-based master's degree, considered a highly respected and recognized academic qualification. To be eligible for M.E, candidates must have successfully completed a B.E/B.Tech degree.

M.Tech is a two-year postgraduate program designed to provide students with essential practical skills complemented by sufficient theoretical knowledge to foster their development.

Hope this helps!!

can i do phd biotechnology from iisc bangalore after 2 year msc zoology f

Certainly! Moving from a two-year M.Sc. in Zoology to a Ph.D. in Biotechnology at IISC Bangalore is a feasible path, but it necessitates thoughtful planning. Your M.Sc. should cover key subjects like genetics, molecular biology, and biochemistry, with potential additional coursework or research experience in biotechnology-related areas.

Admission to IISC Bangalore's Ph.D. program is highly competitive. Academic performance, research experience, and publications will play pivotal roles. Successfully clearing the entrance examination and interview is also part of the process.

Establishing connections with faculty members or researchers in IISC Bangalore's biotechnology department is advantageous. Building relationships showcases your dedication and interest in biotechnology research, potentially strengthening your application.

Despite the challenges, if you're passionate about pursuing research in biotechnology, the transition is worth exploring. It's a journey that demands dedication, a solid academic background, and a strategic approach.

Thanks for your questions! Should you require further clarification or assistance, feel free to ask.

Department of Mathematics

Indian institute of science, the ph.d. programme.

See also: The Integrated Ph.D.Degree_Programme

The Department of Mathematics offers excellent opportunities for research in both pure and applied mathematics. Visit the Research Areas page to get a sense of the research interests of the faculty in the department. The written test conducted by IISc for entrance to the Ph.D. programme has been discontinued as of 2013. Students will be selected through the examinations listed below, followed by an interview at IISc.

Eligibility

Minimum second-class or equivalent grade in the qualifying examination/degree (which is relaxed to a “pass class” for SC/ST candidates). See below for degrees that qualify.

Master’s degree in the Mathematical or Physical Sciences, or B.E./B.Tech. (or equivalent degree) in an appropriate field of Engineering or Technology.

The candidate should also have passed one of the following entrance tests: CSIR-UGC NET for JRF, or UGC-NET for JRF, or GATE (all of these to be valid as of August 1, 2018), or the NBHM 2018 Screening Test; or must hold an INSPIRE Ph.D. fellowship.

Concerning candidates who have passed one of the above examinations: only eligible candidates who have been short-listed on the basis of their scores in one of the above examinations will be called for the interview. Note: the short-list for NBHM 2018 will be based only on the NBHM 2018 screening test. Selection to the Ph.D. programme will be based on performance in the interview.

Candidates who are yet to complete their examinations for the eligible degree and expect to complete all the requirements for their degree (including all examinations, project dissertations, viva voce, etc.) before July 31, 2018, are eligible to apply.

How to Apply

Please visit the IISc admissions page for information and instructions on how to access the online admission portal.

Students admitted to the Ph.D. programme need to take a minimum of 12 credits to complete the course requirement. Each course carries 3 credits. (View the webpage Courses for more information.)
