The Department of Chemical Engineering accepts applications to our graduate programs once per year for Autumn quarter entry only.

The application deadline for Autumn 2024 entry is December 1, 2023, at 11:59pm (PST).   All applications completed and received by this date will receive full consideration.  No late applications will be accepted.

All components of a graduate application must be received by the department no later than the appropriate deadline - including letters of recommendation.  Once submitted, applications are considered final, and no further updates are accepted.  Application review begins immediately so on-time submission of all materials is critical.

A complete application consists of a completed application form, a statement of purpose (a summary of research experience for PhD applications), the application fee, three letters of recommendation, and TOEFL examination results (scores and percentages) if applicable.

The PhD application season is late-September through mid-December each year. The application is closed. No late applications will be accepted.

Our Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program is open to all applicants who have completed a bachelor’s degree or will have completed one before matriculating as a graduate student at Stanford.

What We Look For ChemE PhD students come from a wide variety of personal, educational, and professional backgrounds. We welcome applicants with undergraduate degrees in diverse STEM disciplines including Bioengineering, Biophysics, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biochemistry, Physics, and Chemistry. There are no specific course requirements for applicants, but a competitive candidate will have strong quantitative training in mathematics and the physical sciences, along with a background in biology acquired through coursework or prior research. All admitted graduate students should be prepared to take the core courses in the first year.

We welcome students entering directly from undergraduate programs, as well as applicants with MS degrees and/or substantial work experience in areas ranging from biotechnology to robotics. Our admissions committee will look for evidence that an applicant has demonstrated qualities of successful PhD students such as creativity, self-initiative, dedication, and perseverance. We also aim to admit Chemical Engineering students who can thrive at Stanford because their specific interests and aspirations are well-matched with the research of our faculty and the educational environment of our department.

Individual Chemical Engineering faculty members do not admit applicants directly to their research groups. Please do not send individual faculty members or staff informal documents and appeals for informal evaluations and/or admission to a research group. We are unable to provide informal recommendations / evaluations on the basis of partial information such as a CV, test scores or a transcript. Inquiries and materials sent to individual professors may or may not be redirected to administrative staff. We encourage potential applicants to consider discussing their issues with faculty recommenders who know them well and could give better, individualized academic advice.

Applications are reviewed by a committee of faculty that hold appointments in ChemE and represent diverse research expertise. Each application is read in full and evaluated by at least two separate committee members. The applicants who are considered most competitive are then discussed by the entire admissions committee who attempt to balance the research interests, perspectives, and backgrounds & experiences in the final cohort of students who are offered admission.

The Department of Chemical Engineering considers the following in offering admission to our program:

  • Academic preparation - applicant seeks and excels in coursework relevant to chemical engineering
  • Quality of prior research experience - applicant takes advantage of available research opportunities, has made meaningful contributions in their research, and has engaged in depth in experimental or theoretical work
  • Demonstrated resilience - applicant demonstrates an ability to overcome obstacles that present challenges in educational and training experiences
  • Curiosity, creativity - for example, as demonstrated by applicant’s chosen engagement in research opportunities and coursework
  • Motivation - applicant clearly describes personal motivation for graduate training and engagement in PhD research, demonstrated work ethic, and/or track record of pursuing available research and training opportunities
  • Maturity and preparedness - e.g. as demonstrated by applicant’s past engagement in activities and classes, ability to work in teams, leadership roles, and/or demonstrated commitment to scholarly work
  • Potential contribution to Stanford Chemical Engineering community

IMPORTANT: These departmental instructions and requirements are SUPPLEMENTAL to the  university-wide requirements  for each and every application for admission to any advanced degree program at Stanford University.

Application Materials

A degree in chemical engineering is not required but applicants should be familiar with key concepts and their applications. This typically means applicants have degrees in other science and engineering disciplines such as bioengineering, biology, chemistry, materials science, mathematics, mechanical engineering and physics. We are looking for coursework or other experiences demonstrating use of higher-level mathematics (e.g. linear algebra, partial differential equations) and recommend completion of core chemical engineering courses (e.g. fluid mechanics, heat and mass transport phenomena, chemical reaction kinetics, thermodynamics). An MS degree is not a prerequisite for admission to our PhD program or for PhD degree conferral.

We invite excellent students from all backgrounds, including those from historically underrepresented groups in engineering, to consider Stanford University for their graduate studies. In making admissions decisions, the Department of Chemical Engineering will comply with the requirements of the law as determined by the Supreme Court of the United States, evaluating each applicant based on their “experiences as an individual—not on the basis of race.” We continue to value a diverse student body that benefits the educational experience of our students and our mission of generating knowledge at Stanford University.

The maximum length is two pages (single-spaced). Your statement of purpose should be a well-structured essay that effectively communicates the information above while demonstrating your expository writing ability; it is often effective to open with a summary paragraph.

5. Three letters of recommendation

Recommenders should know you well and be able to comment on your strengths and your potential for graduate study. Our faculty strongly prefer letters of recommendation from academic (or professional) references who can speak to your academic and/or research background (e.g. professors who have acted as research supervisors, or instructors who have had extensive individual interactions with you). Letters must be submitted by the stated deadline as application review begins immediately. Late letters will not be reviewed. Additionally, our faculty find it helpful to hear from references who can comment on your personal qualities that would enable you to succeed in our graduate programs (such as your work ethic, commitment to goals, passion for learning and teaching, and capacity to overcome adversity), even if these references are from outside of STEM fields (e.g. coaches, academic advisors, and university leaders). Additional recommenders beyond the 3 required Letters of Recommendation are not requested.

The Department of Chemical Engineering does not accept letters of recommendation submitted through Interfolio.

6. List of Research Experience (CV/Resume format) - 1 page limit

Your Research Experience provides the admissions committee with additional information to better evaluate your preparation and fit for our program. This is an opportunity to summarize your qualifications, honors, educational accomplishments (including publications and presentations) and interests. It should be a bulleted list, and can be structured similarly to a CV or resume and include relevant experience.  Please note:  The application portal labels this the "Resume/CV" in the Experience section of the application and incorrectly states the page length is 3 pages. Please adhere to 1 page and upload your "List of Research Experience" where the application portal shows the "Resume/CV".

7. TOEFL scores

Applicants whose first spoken language is not English are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), unless they qualify for an exemption or waiver. Applicants whose scores fall below Stanford’s minimum TOEFL requirements will still be considered for admission; if admitted, Stanford may require these students to take a placement exam and/or classes to satisfy the University’s English proficiency requirement.

TOEFL scores are retained for 20 months. For questions about the validity of TOEFL scores, please contact ETS. If ETS is able to send your TOEFL scores, we will accept them. Stanford currently does not accept scores from the IELTS exam.

From working on projects and presenting the results, I developed good research skills and a better understanding of theory, as well as improving my confidence in public speaking.

In the university, I also made a point to take part in many extracurricular activities, despite my busy class schedule. For example, I volunteered in the Student Affairs Office, where I planned various activities, edited their weekly newsletter, and interacted with students from different departments and backgrounds. In addition, I served as a class representative for three years, dealing with students’ problems and bridging the communication gap between administrators and the professors. Outside of school, I worked part-time during vacations at a local bank, where I dealt directly with customers to help solve various banking problems that arose. I strongly believe that in the importance of being well-rounded, and these extra-curricular activities enabled me to develop into a skilled communicator with advanced leadership and interpersonal skills, all of which will prove tremendously useful in your graduate program.

I am confident that my academic background, combined with my experiences outside of the classroom, gives me the maturity that I need to succeed as an overseas student. Studying in your Master of Chemical Engineering program will give me a unique range of experience and expertise, and this will in turn give me a tremendous advantage in my career. If given the chance to enter your school, I would ideally like to take optional courses such as Public Utilities, Fundamentals of Electrochemistry, Energy Materials, or Synthesis and Application of Nanomaterials, as these are closely related to my interests. Moreover, I am looking forward to collaborating with students from different backgrounds, and the chance to improve my English abilities while learning to live more independently will be indispensable to me as I begin my career.

Regarding my future goals, in the short-term I plan to observe the development of chemical engineering in a different country. After completing my master’s degree and returning to my native country, I expect to work either in the hi-tech industry or more conventional industries. Chemical engineers with cutting-edge skills are in high demand here, and after completing your program I know that I will be armed with the tools I need to achieve considerable success and make a lasting impact in this field. I view this career as truly rewarding, and I thus sincerely hope you can grant me admission, as this is the next step towards my dream career.

“More or less everything that is utilized in the modern world is a chemical or has undergone various chemical treatment.  From food to medicine and from paper to plastic, everything has been enhanced with the magical touch of chemistry. However, this overreliance on chemical products is slowly but surely putting the entire plant in jeopardy. There must be an alternative. In fact, there are and we have found possible solutions for many of these problems. What holds us back from making use of these possibilities is the feasibility factor. My quests in search of such viable choices have led me to pursue a PhD in chemical engineering from the esteemed VNB University.

Although I have been always been engrossed by the possibilities of research, I never got the opportunity to engage in full-scale researcher. The scope of researches I could conduct in the capacity of a student, and later as an engineering professional, was limited. However, a singular event at work unleashed my dormant desire for exploratory analysis in its full strength.

After thorough analysis, I have found out that VNBU provides the best options for my career as a researcher. The in-campus lab, by itself, is equipped with state-of-the-art machinery and gadgets. Combined with the industrial links of the university makes large-scale facilities much more accessible to the researchers. I am confident that the academy will provide the best setting for conducting collaborative research projects and will pave the way to my success.“

Doctor of Philosophy Program

The Ph.D. program is designed to prepare each student to take an active part in the development and growth of the field of chemical engineering at all levels in academia, industry, and various research organizations. All admitted graduate students must demonstrate competence in graduate course work and demonstrate the capability to do independent research. Each student selects a major professor and an advisory committee to assist him/her in planning a program of course work and thesis research. The student takes thirty credits of graduate course work (usually 10 three-credit classes), and writes a thesis. The thesis research should be original work that contributes significantly to new knowledge.

In the beginning of the second year of the program, all students go through the Ph.D. Qualifying Procedure.  They must pass the Qualifying Procedure (Qual) in order to proceed directly to the Ph.D. program.

Beginning with the third semester, each student, as part of the degree requirement, occasionally assists in the instructional activities of the department as a Teaching Fellow (TF). The current periodicity is one semester every other year. Students usually teach in their third and sixth semesters. Advanced students may have the opportunity to participate directly in the planning and presentation of undergraduate courses that are related to their thesis work.

By the eighth week of the sixth semester, students must take their Preliminary Examination (Prelim). During the Prelim, the student presents a plan for his/her research, and the student demonstrates proficiency in the theory and experimental methods needed for completion of the research. Once a student passes the Prelim, he/she is admitted into candidacy. After the student completes the research and writes the thesis, he/she will take the Final Examination, which is a defense of the written thesis.

Statement of Purpose

statement of purpose phd chemical engineering

Selection committees want to hear that you have chosen to apply to their program for good reasons.  Avoid telling them that it is because of rankings or that you grew up loving the university.  It is very important for you to tailor your essay for each application that you submit.

Some schools ask for specific information or want specific questions to be answered.  Be sure to focus your essay on the information requests.  A well-written essay that doesn’t address the selection committee’s interests will be ineffective.  Generally, most selection committees are interested in the following:

  • Why do you want to pursue this discipline?
  • What are your specific goals for graduate study?
  • What are your goals beyond graduate study?
  • How have you prepared academically?
  • What experiences have helped you prepare?
  • What attracted you to apply to this program?

The essay is also a sample of your communication skills.  It should be written in essay form with an introduction, body and closing. It should be well organized, easy to read, and interesting.  Organization is flexible but is should flow as you tell your story.  It should be error free and within the word limit, if one is imposed (500 words is common).  Have several people review it for errors and have it critiqued by a professor or career services professional.

Introduction

  • Start with something that will get the reader’s attention and make them want to read more (a passionate hook).
  • It often works well to use this paragraph to tell the selection committee why you are passionately interested in your chosen field of study, since this is usually the most interesting part of your personal story.

Example: It is remarkable that so much can be learned from microscopic analysis of material surfaces and how this information can be used to improve designs.  Exposure to failure analysis, dislocations, and point defects as an undergraduate fascinated me and produced a strong curiosity in me about the structure of materials.  This has led me to pursue a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, and I would like to conduct my graduate work at Iowa State University.

Body (Several Paragraphs)

  • Segway into your arguments for why you should be admitted to the specific program.   The focus should be on your academic preparation for graduate school and why you have chosen their program.  It shouldn’t matter which topic you begin with.
  • Important classes that provided you with knowledge that you hope to build on.  (If a well-known and respected professor taught a class, sometimes it helps to mention his or her name.)
  • A project that you completed that provided you with knowledge that other applicants probably don’t have.
  • Contributions you have made to research projects during an REU or work experience.  Indicate the principal investigator(s), the title of the project, what your responsibilities were and the outcome.
  • Publications or presentations that you co-authored or received acknowledgement for your work.
  • Internships and other work experiences that have provided opportunities to develop skills that will be useful for conducting research and completing projects.
  • One or two extracurricular activities that relate to your preparation for graduate school or convey a virtuous personal quality.
  • Significant problem with your qualifications that will be noticed by the selection committee (e.g. a low GPA or entrance level score).  Explain it and why you are a better student because of it.
  • An area of emphasis or research that aligns with your interests and goals.
  • Particular strengths of the program that you noted during your research.
  • Professors whose interest areas match yours that you hope to learn from.  Don’t just mention names, but rather, indicate what aspects of their research interest you.
  • Special facilities that you have read about or seen during a visit.
  • Begin your closing paragraph by restating your desire to be admitted into the specific program.
  • End in a positive and confident manner that indicates a readiness for the challenges of graduate study.

Ph.D. CEP Program

statement of purpose phd chemical engineering

The Doctor of Philosophy in Chemical Engineering Practice is a relatively new degree program built on existing strengths within the Department’s research activities, the unique resources of the David H. Koch School of Chemical Engineering Practice, and the world class resources of the Sloan School of Management. It is designed to prepare students for a fast launch into positions of leadership in industry and provides them with a foundation for completing an M.B.A. degree. It is a fixed-term degree program, requiring four calendar years; the first year is spent in course work and the Practice School, the middle two years are spent in research, and the final year is spent in the Sloan School of Management.

Ph.D. CEP Program Elements

The Ph.D. CEP program has 5 clearly-identifiable elements which will be completed by the student. There are aspects of the program which are designed to help the students integrate the material contained in the individual pieces of the program.

  • Element 1 – Core Chemical Engineering Graduate Subjects
  • Element 2 – The School of Chemical Engineering Practice (CEP)
  • Element 3 – Research Project
  • Element 4 – 1st Year of the MIT Sloan MBA
  • Element 5 – Integrative Perspective Paper (Capstone Paper)

The degree requires that you complete:

  • The core curriculum, as well as the departmental biology requirement
  • Practice School requirements, including a one-semester industrial internship (culminating in an M.S.CEP degree)
  • Written and oral qualifying examinations
  • Thesis describing original research
  • Coursework at the Sloan School of Management
  • Capstone paper, combining technical experience with business training, appended to the thesis

For incoming, first-year graduate students, academic advisors are members of the Committee for Graduate Students. When you select a research topic and begin your thesis, the research supervisor becomes your academic advisor. In general, students choose research advisors at the end of their first Fall semester at MIT. Should you wish to choose a research advisor from a department other than Chemical Engineering, you will also need to choose a co-advisor from the Chemical Engineering faculty.

Prior to Registration Day (Fall and Spring semesters), your subject selection must first be approved by your advisor before the Graduate Officer can authorize registration on Registration Day. Advisor approval should also be obtained for any subsequent subject add/drop actions during the term (no additional authorization by the Graduate Officer is required).

Program Admission

Students interested in the Ph.D.CEP program should direct their applications to the Chemical Engineering Graduate Admissions Committee during the regular admission cycle. Applications for Ph.D.CEP will only be considered for September matriculation. Applications will be reviewed by both MIT Sloan and Chemical Engineering and they must receive approval of both for admission to the Ph.D.CEP program. The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is required of applicants whose first language is not English. Unofficial (self-reported) GRE general exam scores are recommended for PhDCEP applicants.

An interview at MIT in late February will be part of the application process in most cases. Applicants will be interviewed over the phone.

The traditional Ph.D./Sc.D. program and the new Ph.D.CEP program are separate and distinct paths to the doctoral degree in the Chemical Engineering Department at MIT. The Ph.D.CEP program will be limited to 10 or fewer students per year. Because the focus and educational goals of the Ph.D.CEP are substantially different from those of the traditional Ph.D./Sc.D. program, the two programs are expected to appeal to two different populations of applicants. Applicants for graduate study should submit only one application, and indicate for which program they wish to be considered. Applications made to both programs are deemed inconsistent, and therefore discouraged. Applicants are expected to consider carefully the offerings of each program in relation to their own goals and aspirations, and to choose a program accordingly. Transfer between programs will not be permitted except as outlined earlier.

You can obtain the information that you will need to apply to MIT’s graduate programs from the MIT Graduate Admissions web site.

Tuition & Financial Aid

Students accepted into the PhDCEP program will be supported via Chemical Engineering Department fellowships during the first calendar year; they will be awarded research or teaching assistantships during the entire period of participation in the thesis research project. During the final year of the program, PhDCEP students will pay tuition and living expense costs from their own resources, or from graduate student loans available through MIT and other third-party sources. It is important to note that the tuition costs for this final year will be somewhat larger than the standard MIT graduate tuition because enrollment in the MIT Sloan MBA program requires a premium tuition payment. PRIOR TO ADVANCEMENT TO CANDIDACY

Research progress reports.

Prior to and in preparation for the Candidacy Exam, each graduate student is required to write and submit research progress reports that are assessed by the advisor and filed by the Graduate Affairs Committee (GAC).  The goals of these reports are:

  • to engage the student in concrete planning of research activities
  • to provide the student with early experience and feedback in technical writing that will lead into the preparation of his or her candidacy report
  • to gather formal, documented feedback from the student advisor that assesses progress thus far and offers recommendations moving forward

The reports are due on July 15 of the first year and January 15 of the second year.

First-year symposium

On the last Tuesday before Fall instruction begins, all PhD students near the end of their first year of graduate study will give a short presentation to the department.  Students will present the moti-vation for their project, their project objectives, and their early research progress if applicable.  The symposium will be attended by professors and graduate students of chemical engineering.  The first year symposium has several purposes:

  • to encourage research progress in the first summer
  • to encourage early advice on projects from the department
  • to stimulate thinking about research projects (often highly specific) in the broader context for a general chemical engineering audience
  • to encourage intra-department collaborations at early stages

Candidacy examination and advancement to candidacy

A comprehensive candidacy exam is required for advancement to candidacy.  The exam provides an early forum for the dissertation committee to judge research progress and direction.  It involves a written candidacy report prepared by the student and an oral candidacy examination with the student's dissertation committee.  The candidacy exam is normally completed by the end of spring quarter of a student’s second year, but it must be completed by August 31 of that year at the latest.

The candidacy report should outline progress made toward the completion of the student's research project. In addition, it should indicate clearly the proposed directions for future research. The report should be prepared in consultation with the research advisor, but the student must write it. Each report will contain a description of the research project, including a discussion of the background literature, a description of the basic experimental or theoretical procedures employed, results obtained, and a coherent plan for future studies. The report should also contain at least one section or appendix that discusses explicitly how each of the core chemical engineering area of thermodynamics, kinetics, and transport broadly contribute to the scope of the student’s proposed research.

The oral component of the candidacy exam is attended by the exam committee (i.e., the future dissertation or thesis committee) and should be scheduled for at least 2 hours. The length of the student’s presentation (if uninterrupted) should be approximately 30-40 minutes with typically 25-30 slides. The primary emphasis of the Oral Exam is a student’s research progress and associated themes. Additional subject-matter questions that broadly relate a student’s research to the core areas of chemical engineering are also an important component. Questions and discussion of core chemical engineering principles during the oral examination will be guided by the student’s treat-ment of these areas in his or her written report.

To be eligible for advancement, the student must have been registered for three consecutive quarters, have a GPA of at least 3.0, clear all I (incomplete) or NG (no-grade) entries on the transcript and satisfy the Department’s candidacy requirements. The Department requires a higher 3.25 GPA in core graduate courses for advancement to candidacy.

After advancement to candidacy

Teaching assistantships.

Participation as a TA is a significant part of the Ph.D. experience that engages graduate students in the broader educational mission and functions of the Department and University.  The Department views the requirement to TA as an essential component of graduate education.”  All graduate students must be employed as either a TA or reader for one quarter of each academic year for their second, third, and fourth years in residence.  Students with fellowships that prohibit such employment will be excused for the duration of the fellowship.

Annual meetings with dissertation committee

To encourage frequent contact between a student and his or her dissertation committee, a student who has successfully completed the candidacy exam is required to meet with his or her dissertation committee at least once each academic year. In preparation for these meetings, the student prepares a one or two-page progress report that includes future plans for dissertation completion. Failure to meet with the committee annually may result in the reduction or loss of financial support. The deadline for meeting with the committee and submitting a copy of the report is September 30th.

Graduate student symposium

Approximately one year prior to the Ph.D. defense, all Ph.D. students are required to give an oral presentation on his/her research at the annual graduate student research symposium.  Typically, the presentation requirement will be completed at the beginning of the fifth year, allowing for potential incorporation of constructive feedback from symposium attendees into the thesis.

The Graduate Student Symposium is typically held on the first Friday in October.  It is organized by a group of graduate students that may freely consult and draw upon the guidance of the Graduate Advisor and Graduate Affairs Committee.  Planning begins in April of each year and is generally the responsibility of the rising fifth year graduate students (i.e., the likely presenters).

Final Ph.D. dissertation defense

The University and the Chemical Engineering Department establish the rules and regulations for this defense. The Department requires that all students give an open, advertised defense in a venue that allows attendance by interested parties. Upon completion of a seminar-style presentation by the candidate, the dissertation committee, as well as interested faculty, remain for the defense portion of the exam.

Normative time

Normative time is the number of twelve-month years that a department considers reasonable for completion of a particular Ph.D. program by a full-time student who matriculates with no deficiencies. This time is measured from the quarter a student begins graduate study at any level at UCSB, and therefore includes time spent in the M.S. program here. The normative time in Chemical Engineering is 5 years.

Degree deadlines

The departmental normative time differs from the institution-wide degree deadline. In in every Department, the degree deadline is seven years for a Ph.D., and four years for an M.S. degree. Students who exceed degree deadlines may petition the Graduate Council for an extension. Normative time, however, cannot be extended for individual students. Normative time is a departmental statement of ideals, not of actual averages or of individual possibilities.

How to Write Your Master’s in Engineering Statement of Purpose

statement of purpose phd chemical engineering

Top engineering graduate programs expect applicants to have a high GPA, and some schools also expect an impressive GRE score , though in recent years, more schools have made GRE scores optional. However, many of the applicants you will be competing against have high scores.

Your  statement of purpose  (SOP) is what will allow the adcom to view you as a person with unique goals, potential, interests, values, inspirations, and motivations. It helps adcoms understand what drives you, what your short- and long-term goals are, and how their school can help you realize your dreams. This is the part of the application that enables the adcom to assess whether you are a good match for their program.

Structuring an Engineering Statement of Purpose

Your SOP will ideally include the following:

  • An introductory paragraph that grabs the reader’s attention and sets the stage for the paragraphs to follow
  • A few highlights of your abilities, education, and work accomplishments
  • Reasons for any gaps in your chronological work history or lower-than-average GRE score or GPA
  • A description of your short- and long-term goals
  • An explanation of your interest in this particular program and school, ideally including courses or professors (and their research) of interest to you and student organizations or research institutes in which you’d like to participate
  • A summary paragraph that highlights key points and ties back to the introductory paragraph

Tell a Story in Your Statement of Purpose

While it’s important to include the elements listed in the previous section,  a winning essay  is also  creative and  interesting  to the reader. It is not formulaic and shouldn’t read like a checklist.

In essence, you are telling a story – your story. An engineer recently said to me in a somewhat panicked voice, “I know how to write facts; I don’t know how to tell a story!” The typical MBA candidate loves to discuss their background and is frequently delighted to relate the many exciting adventures they’ve had. In contrast, if I say to an engineering candidate, “Tell me about yourself,” I am sometimes met with silence and a reluctance to divulge personal information.

Engineers are taught to think logically, rationally, in black-and-white facts and figures where there is a right and a wrong answer. A graduate school application expects you to explore the “gray” in your life. What made you decide on that option? What motivated you to take that action? Why is it important to you? There is no right or wrong, which can be freeing.

Why Engineering?

Engineering schools want to know what or who inspired you to become an engineer. At what age did you first believe that this was the right career path for you, and why? You need to step away and look at your life with a level of objectivity, so that you can explain your life trajectory and the reasons you took certain turns.

Most schools have a page or word limit for their SOP, but don’t let that inhibit you when you’re first creating your story from your outline. A good engineering admissions consultant can help you  tell your story effectively  and still meet the word limit requirements. Telling that story compellingly sometimes requires multiple drafts, and some of my past clients wrote as many as 12 drafts before they were satisfied with the final product.

As with the other elements of the application, give yourself sufficient time to write your SOP. It can be the reason the adcom at the engineering graduate program you’re targeting decides in favor of your admission.

Dr. Karin Ash

With 30 years of career and admissions experience at four universities, including Cornell’s College of Engineering and Johnson Business School, Dr. Karin Ash facilitated students’ entry into the world’s best companies. As an adcom member, she also evaluated applications and therefore knows what schools and employers seek. Want Karin to help you get Accepted? Click here to get in touch!
