The Council of Social Science Research of MHRD, Government of India offers doctoral fellowships in Social Sciences to PhD scholars who are registered in a UGC-recognized Indian university. A great opportunity for scholars looking for PhD scholarships in India, it is strictly applicable for two years and the value of the fellowship is ₹20,000 per month. Offered in around 25 subjects of Social Sciences that include Political Science, Social Work, Gender Studies, Public Administration , etc, to be eligible for the fellowship, a candidate must have confirmed PhD registration at a recognized university. The application process for the 2019-20 session has already been closed but you should be prepared for the 2021-22 session to avail the benefits.

The fellowship is provided by the Ministry of Minority Affairs of the Government of India. The objective of the fellowship is to provide students from minority communities with financial assistance to pursue higher education such as MPhil and PhD. The Maulana Azad National fellowship can be availed by taking admission to any of the recognized universities in the country. One of the lesser-known PhD scholarships in India, it is awarded to those candidates whose family income is not more than 6 Lakh. Under the scheme, the scholar gets ₹28,000 per month for 5 years. The fellowship is intended to enable young scholars to excel in research in their subject of interest. The candidates who show exceptional aptitude for research are shortlisted for the fellowship. It can be availed by taking admission to a recognized university in India. The NET-qualified NCERT Doctoral Fellows will receive ₹25,000 per month for a maximum period of three years from the date of registration into a PhD program. For the candidates who have not qualified for the NET exam , the amount is ₹23,000 per month.

The applicants who qualify for the scholarship scheme will receive a contingency grant of INR 50,000 per month in the first and the second year and INR 60,000 per month from the third year onwards.

The National post-doctoral fellowship is introduced by the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) . In this scholarship program, the students from ST/ SC or OBC backgrounds studying for Ph.D. and other courses are eligible to apply. On getting qualified for this Ph.D. scholarship program, deserving candidates will get an opportunity to work under a mentor and become independent researchers. The scholarship scheme aims to provide research opportunities to students of India. The selected students will get rewards of up to INR 2,00,000 .

The Ministry of Minority Affairs issues the MOMA scholarship for the students studying in classes 1 to Ph.D. level . Under this scholarship program, the students who belong to (Christians, Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, and Parsis) community can apply. In addition, the scholarship program aims to provide scholarship opportunities to the impoverished students of India and encourages them to pursue higher education. Under this scholarship scheme, the meritorious candidates can benefit from a scholarship reward of up to INR 20,000 .

The "WISE Fellowship for Ph.D. (WISE-PhD)" of the Department of Science and Technology aims to provide opportunity to carry out Doctoral research in basic and applied sciences to women scientists and technologists between the age group of 27-45 years who want to pursue research in STEM fields as bench-level scientist.
Vision: WISE-PhD provides opportunity to women to pursue higher education, i.e., Ph.D. through independent project grant.
Objectives: The main objective of WISE-PhD is to encourage women scientists to conduct Doctoral research in science and engineering and to engage them in knowledge dissemination through SSR.
Target Group: Women who have Post Graduation in Basic or Applied Sciences or equivalent degree and wish to pursue PhD in basic & applied sciences can apply in WISE-PhD programme for financial support. Women in regular employment are not eligible for this programme.
Scientific Disciplines: Under WISE-PhD, support is available in 5 scientific disciplines viz. (1) Physical and Mathematical Sciences [PM]; (2) Chemical Sciences [CS]; (3) Life Sciences [LS]; (4) Earth and Atmospheric Sciences [EA]; and (5) Engineering & Technology [ET]
Eligibility:
- Educational Qualification: Women Scientists having Post-Graduate Degree in Basic/ Applied Science or equivalent degree like M. Phil., M. Tech., M. Pharm., etc. or B.Tech.are eligible for WISE-PhD.
- Age: The minimum age to apply in the programme is 27 years and maximum is 45 years (Relaxation of 3 years in the upper age limit is allowed for SC/ ST/ PH candidates). Women scientists, less than 27 years of age are NOT eligible. Cut-off date for age calculation wouldbe the date of submission of WISE-PhD application.
- Who Can Apply: Unemployed women who want to pursue Ph.D. can apply for fellowship under WISE-PhD. The programme is open for both candidates; those who have not yet registered as well as who have already registered for Ph.D., but not availing fellowship from any sources. Although, candidates who have completed two (2) years duration in Ph.D. as onthe date of application are NOT eligible.
Financial Support :This Programme provides fellowship of the applicant @Rs. 37,000/- per monthalong withHouse Rent Allowances (HRA) as per norms, Research Grant of Rs. 1.00 lakh per year and Institutional overhead charges @Rs. 0.50 lakh per year.
Duration :The project tenure is up to maximum 5 years duration.

Around 800 scholarships are given away each year; recipients study at UK universities without having to pay high tuition fees for the first three years of their studies.

The Destination Australia Programme is open to PhD students at Australian regional universities. Priority is given to courses that align with the Australian Government’s National Skills Priority List in 2023.

#3 – Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships
The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship is available to doctoral students in the fields of health research, natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, and humanities. Beneficiaries may take non-degree courses and acquire practical work experience in the United States, which is unique to the programme.
According to a message from the USIEF (United States-India Educational Foundation) dated February 2, 2022, fostering the US-India relationship by providing personal, academic, and professional growth opportunities for Indian students, as well as increasing mutual understanding between the US and India, are top priorities for the Fulbright programme.
- A letter of recommendation from the applicant’s supervisor demonstrating the applicant’s research excellence and need for the fellowship.

- Applicants for 2022-23 must have registered for a PhD at an Indian institution on or before November 1, 2021.

PhD Scholarships Through GATE In India
In India, numerous students aspire to secure PhD scholarships through GATE, the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. Candidates who perform well in the GATE entrance exam can be awarded these scholarships. The eligibility criteria for PhD scholarships through GATE vary depending on the organisation offering the scholarship.
