This fellowship program is offered by Google for aspiring PhD scholars in Computer Science or related specializations. The Google Ph.D. Fellowship India Program provides a monthly fellowship amount as well as covers the contingency expenses along with giving an internship offer at Google. The requirements for this Google Scholarship for PhD in India are:

• The candidate must be enrolled in a PhD course at a recognised university in India.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree holder from a university in India
• A working professional at a recognised organisation in India

ICHR Junior Research Fellowships (JRF) are for PhD aspirants of Historical Studies and are offered by the Indian Council of Historical Research. It offers a monthly stipend of up to 17,600 INR as well as monthly contingency expenses of 16,500 p.a. for 2 years. The only eligibility requirement for this scholarship is that the applicant must be enrolled in a PhD in Historical Studies at a recognized higher education institution in India.

The Council of Social Science Research of MHRD, Government of India offers doctoral fellowships in Social Sciences to PhD scholars who are registered in a UGC-recognized Indian university. A great opportunity for scholars looking for PhD scholarships in India, it is strictly applicable for two years and the value of the fellowship is ₹20,000 per month. Offered in around 25 subjects of Social Sciences that include Political Science, Social Work, Gender Studies, Public Administration , etc, to be eligible for the fellowship, a candidate must have confirmed PhD registration at a recognized university. The application process for the 2019-20 session has already been closed but you should be prepared for the 2021-22 session to avail the benefits.

The fellowship is provided by the Ministry of Minority Affairs of the Government of India. The objective of the fellowship is to provide students from minority communities with financial assistance to pursue higher education such as MPhil and PhD. The Maulana Azad National fellowship can be availed by taking admission to any of the recognized universities in the country. One of the lesser-known PhD scholarships in India, it is awarded to those candidates whose family income is not more than 6 Lakh. Under the scheme, the scholar gets ₹28,000 per month for 5 years. Candidates can apply for the fellowship on the official website of UGC.

The fellowship is intended to enable young scholars to excel in research in their subject of interest. The candidates who show exceptional aptitude for research are shortlisted for the fellowship. It can be availed by taking admission to a recognized university in India. The NET-qualified NCERT Doctoral Fellows will receive ₹25,000 per month for a maximum period of three years from the date of registration into a PhD program. For the candidates who have not qualified for the NET exam , the amount is ₹23,000 per month.

Students need to clear the Biotechnology Eligibility Test (BET) to get selected for this scholarship. The scholarship will cover the economic fare, tuition fees, living allowance, expense of books, study materials, thesis preparation, etc. The requirements for the SAARC Agricultural PhD Scholarship are as follows:

• Applicant should be a citizen of Bhutan/ India/ Maldives/ Pakistan/ Sri Lanka
•  Employed at National Agricultural Research System/ Ministry/ Department.
• Below the age of 40 years.
• Pursuing a full-time PhD for three years

The applicants who qualify for the scholarship scheme will receive a contingency grant of INR 50,000 per month in the first and the second year and INR 60,000 per month from the third year onwards.

The National post-doctoral fellowship is introduced by the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) . In this scholarship program, the students from ST/ SC or OBC backgrounds studying for Ph.D. and other courses are eligible to apply. On getting qualified for this Ph.D. scholarship program, deserving candidates will get an opportunity to work under a mentor and become independent researchers. The scholarship scheme aims to provide research opportunities to students of India. The selected students will get rewards of up to INR 2,00,000 . 

The last date of applying for the National post doctoral fellowship has not been updated yet.

The Ministry of Minority Affairs issues the MOMA scholarship for the students studying in classes 1 to Ph.D. level . Under this scholarship program, the students who belong to (Christians, Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, and Parsis) community can apply. In addition, the scholarship program aims to provide scholarship opportunities to the impoverished students of India and encourages them to pursue higher education. Under this scholarship scheme, the meritorious candidates can benefit from a scholarship reward of up to INR 20,000 .

Tata Innovation Fellowship 

The Tata innovation fellowship is introduced by the Department of Biotechnology and the Ministry of Sciences & Technology , government of India, to provide monetary aid to the students studying Ph.D. and other courses . Around 5 awards are given every year to scientists with exceptional work journals. This Ph.D. scholarship program aims to provide research convenience to candidates who belong to scientific and other fields. Here, the deserving students will get rewards of up to INR 6,00,000 .

The West Bengal Minorities Development and Finance Corporation (WBMDFC) puts forth the Aikyashree scholarship for the students studying in class 1 to Ph.D. level . This scholarship scheme for Ph.D. students aims to provide scholarship opportunities to minority students studying in the state. The selected students will receive variable rewards .

The Ministry of Minority Affairs offers the Maulana Azad scholarship. The meritorious students studying in classes 9 to Ph.D. courses can apply for this scholarship scheme irrespective of their economic background. Under this scholarship scheme, the candidate's family income should not exceed INR 6,00,000 from all sources. The deserving applicants will be rewarded with a scholarship amount of INR 35,000.

The DCE Scholarship

The DCE scholarship is provided by the Department of Collegiate Education (DCE). It is available for the students who are inhabitants of Kerala studying in class X to post-graduation degrees . This scholarship program aims to provide financial aid to deserving candidates belonging to the backward classes of society. The family earnings of the candidates should not exceed INR 8,00,000 per annum . The qualified applicants will get up to INR 20,000 per annum .

The National overseas scholarship for ST students is an initiative by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, government of India. This scholarship scheme is for students pursuing Ph.D. and other courses . The preferred candidates will get an opportunity to pursue master's, Ph.D., and other professional courses internationally. The main aim is to provide economic aid to meritorious students and provide them with opportunities for Ph.D. scholarships for st students. A scholarship amount of INR 11,50,000 will be given to the deserving candidates.

WISE Fellowship for Ph.D. (WISE-PhD)

The "WISE Fellowship for Ph.D. (WISE-PhD)" of the Department of Science and Technology aims to provide opportunity to carry out Doctoral research in basic and applied sciences to women scientists and technologists between the age group of 27-45 years who want to pursue research in STEM fields as bench-level scientist.

Vision: WISE-PhD provides opportunity to women to pursue higher education, i.e., Ph.D. through independent project grant.

Objectives: The main objective of WISE-PhD is to encourage women scientists to conduct Doctoral research in science and engineering and to engage them in knowledge dissemination through SSR.

Target Group: Women who have Post Graduation in Basic or Applied Sciences or equivalent degree and wish to pursue PhD in basic & applied sciences can apply in WISE-PhD programme for financial support. Women in regular employment are not eligible for this programme.

Scientific Disciplines: Under WISE-PhD, support is available in 5 scientific disciplines viz. (1) Physical and Mathematical Sciences [PM]; (2) Chemical Sciences [CS]; (3) Life Sciences [LS]; (4) Earth and Atmospheric Sciences [EA]; and (5) Engineering & Technology [ET]

Eligibility:

• Educational Qualification: Women Scientists having Post-Graduate Degree in Basic/ Applied Science or equivalent degree like M. Phil., M. Tech., M. Pharm., etc. or B.Tech.are eligible for WISE-PhD.
• Age: The minimum age to apply in the programme is 27 years and maximum is 45 years (Relaxation of 3 years in the upper age limit is allowed for SC/ ST/ PH candidates). Women scientists, less than 27 years of age are NOT eligible. Cut-off date for age calculation wouldbe the date of submission of WISE-PhD application.
• Who Can Apply: Unemployed women who want to pursue Ph.D. can apply for fellowship under WISE-PhD. The programme is open for both candidates; those who have not yet registered as well as who have already registered for Ph.D., but not availing fellowship from any sources. Although, candidates who have completed two (2) years duration in Ph.D. as onthe date of application are NOT eligible.

Financial Support :This Programme provides fellowship of the applicant @Rs. 37,000/- per monthalong withHouse Rent Allowances (HRA) as per norms, Research Grant of Rs. 1.00 lakh per year and Institutional overhead charges @Rs. 0.50 lakh per year.

Duration :The project tenure is up to maximum 5 years duration.

The duration of a PhD programme ranges from 5 to 7 years, making financial costs a burden for many students. In India, there are several full-time PhD scholarships, including the PM Fellowship for Doctoral Research. These scholarships provide students with a stipend to help them with their studies. They also receive free or heavily discounted housing in order to continue their studies. Let’s take a look at some of the scholarships for PhD students available in India in this article.

#1  – Commonwealth Scholarship

If you wish to pursue PhD in abroad with a scholarship, then the Commonwealth Scholarship is awarded by the United Kingdom to students from Commonwealth countries who succeed in academics, leadership, and innovative thinking. Around 800 scholarships are given away each year; recipients study at UK universities without having to pay high tuition fees for the first three years of their studies.

Eligibility-

• A citizen or permanent resident of a Commonwealth country, a refugee, or a British-protected person.
• Without the scholarship, would be financially unable to study in the UK.
• Under the age of 40.

Amount/Expenses Covered- 

• Monthly stipend of €1,236 or €1516.
• Airfare for first arrival & departure.
• Extra allowances and grants.

Duration – 3 years

#2 – Destination Australia Programme

The Destination Australia Programme is open to PhD students at Australian regional universities. The recipients of scholarships channel the cross-cultural learnings that would benefit Australian society as a whole. Priority is given to courses that align with the Australian Government’s National Skills Priority List in 2023.

Eligibility- 

• Studying in a regional institution in Australia
• No other sponsorships

Amount/Expenses Covered – $15,000 per year

Duration – Maximum 4 years 

#3 – Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships 

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship is available to doctoral students in the fields of health research, natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, and humanities. Only students with exceptional academic achievement, research ability, and demonstrated leadership skills are eligible. It is one of the best scholarships for PhD students and scholars must apply for this scholarship through their registered institution.

Amount/Expense Covered: CAD 50,000 annually

Duration: 3 years

#4 –  Friedrich Naumann Foundation for International Students 

The Friedrich Naumann Foundation Scholarship is available to German university researchers. Its goal is to financially support researchers who have a compelling and innovative research project. The scholarship is used by approximately 150 students each year, making it dependable among the international research student community in Germany. The primary selection criteria for the scholarships for PhD students are the project’s relevance to the discipline, the applicant’s academic merit, and the candidate’s need.

#5 – AAUW International Women’s Fellowship

AAUW International Fellowships help women pursue doctoral degrees at US universities. Established in 1917, scholarship recipients must be enthusiastic about their research and committed to improving the lives of women and girls in their home country. The relevance, quality, and applicability of the research work would be crucial in the selection process.

• Should be a woman scholar of non-US citizenship
• Full-time availability for the fellowship
• Intend to return to their home country after studies
• Underprivileged candidates will get more preference

Amount/Expenses Covered: $50,000 for a year

Duration: 1 year

#6 – Fulbright Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowship

The Fulbright Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowship is a programme that financially supports selected doctoral students from Indian universities to conduct research at a host institution in the United States for 6-9 months. Beneficiaries may take non-degree courses and acquire practical work experience in the United States, which is unique to the programme. 

According to a message from the USIEF (United States-India Educational Foundation) dated February 2, 2022, fostering the US-India relationship by providing personal, academic, and professional growth opportunities for Indian students, as well as increasing mutual understanding between the US and India, are top priorities for the Fulbright programme.

• A letter of recommendation from the applicant’s supervisor demonstrating the applicant’s research excellence and need for the fellowship.
• This scholarship is only open to current researchers.
• Applicants for 2022-23 must have registered for a PhD at an Indian institution on or before November 1, 2021.

Amount/Expenses covered:

• J-1 Visa support
• Monthly stipend
• Round trip economy class travel
• Applicable allowances and affiliation fees

Duration : 6-9 months

#7 – DAAD Scholarship Germany 

The DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) research grants are intended to support doctoral research projects. The selected candidates would receive €1200 per month and health, accident, and personal liability insurance coverage for a maximum of 6 months. Every year, the DAAD awards 25 scholarships to Indian students.

PhD Scholarships For Indian Students In India

In India, several PhD scholarships are available for Indian students to pursue their doctorate courses lasting 3 to 4 years. These scholarships are offered by various organizations to ease the financial burden of higher studies. The eligibility criteria for these scholarships typically require candidates to hold a master’s degree in a relevant field and be below 35 years of age.

PhD Scholarships Through GATE In India

In India, numerous students aspire to secure PhD scholarships through GATE, the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. Candidates who perform well in the GATE entrance exam can be awarded these scholarships. The eligibility criteria for PhD scholarships through GATE vary depending on the organisation offering the scholarship.

GATE Financial Assistance provides financial support to students pursuing a PhD. This scholarship is granted for a duration of 5 years.

PhD Scholarship Amount (INR): Half-time Research Assistantship INR 25,000 to INR 28,000

To be eligible for GATE Financial Assistance, candidates must meet the following criteria:

• Have a valid GATE score at the time of application for assistance.
• Pursue full-time courses, as part-time courses are not eligible.
• Ensure that the bank account name matches the candidate’s name in the general savings account, and joint accounts are not eligible.
• Not be under any other scholarship during the duration of the GATE Financial Assistance.
• Students from non-sponsored categories admitted with valid GATE Score cards are eligible.

GATE scholarships provide valuable financial support to deserving students, encouraging them to pursue their PhD aspirations and contribute to the field of research in India.

While most of the central and state government scholarships are available on the National Scholarship Portal, a dedicated online portal for scholarship implementation and disbursement, there are some states which have their respective scholarship portals through which the students can avail government scholarships. For example, the students of Uttar Pradesh can avail UP government scholarships through its SAKSHAM portal, and the students of West Bengal can avail their respective government scholarship through OASIS portal and other dedicated websites. The students are advised to refer to respective state articles to get a clear idea on how they can get government scholarships.

Can General category students get a government scholarship?

Yes, there are some scholarships available for General category students belonging to Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) of the society. For example, the UP government offers scholarships for general category students.

How many types of government scholarships are there?

The government scholarships can be broadly categorized into merit-based scholarships, means-based scholarships and merit-cum-means based scholarships. While merit scholarships are disbursed on the basis of a student's academic merit, the means-based scholarships are disbursed on the basis of their financial need. However, a merit-cum-means based scholarship takes both the academic merit and financial need into consideration.
