Ques. Do Part Time PhD Programmes exist?

Ans . Yes, the part time PhD programmes do exist. Universities and colleges know that many people have packed schedules. To accommodate busy students, some institutes give the option of part-time enrollment in the PhD programs online or on-campus.

Ques. How Part Time PhD Degree Programmess do Work?

Ans. To graduate from a part-time doctoral program, a student needs to do the same work that they would for a full-time course of study. They will simply spread the work out over a longer stretch of time. The first portion of your program will likely be devoted to the classes. If a student enrolled on a part-time basis, they will probably keep their course load light instead of taking multiple classes at once.

Ques. How long does it take to do a part time PhD programme?

Ans . How long it takes to complete your part time scheduled PhD programme is largely up to you and how much you can commit to your studies at any point in time.

You may find that there are some seasons in which you’re able to invest a good portion of your time and other seasons as well when you’re only able to do the bare minimum to keep going.

Ques. Should I take on too many part time PhD students?

Ans. Most universities prefer not to take on too many part-time PhD students because statistically, the success rate is very low. With reduced access to the university or college facilities and staff, distractions from work, and so many years in which to lose motivation and direction, most part-time students give up and never achieve their PhD degrees.

Ques. Is it possible to study PhD program part time and work full time?

Ans. Plenty of people do this. However, the students have to be prepared to sacrifice much of your free time. Taking two classes a semester will consume nearly 20 hours of your time, not including travel time. Remember you will be reading up to 200 pages in a week, conducting research, writing papers, making presentations, attending class and participating in the discussion, and take exams. While each class may not include all these factors but many will.

Ques. Is it possible to enter a traditional academic career after the completion of a part time PhD programme?

Ans . Yes, it's possible, but a doctorate is only one element of an academic career. First, only the most dynamic doctorates land academic positions, especially in the research universities and colleges with tenure-track positions, thus it is essential as a doctoral student to cultivate a professional reputation, and that means participating in departmental duties as a teaching and research assistant, and attending and participating in professional conferences.

Ques. Which is better, a part-time PhD with a job or a full-time Ph.D.?

Ans. Do PhD programme when you are fully convinced and ready for the topic and research methodology of research yourself after successful completion of bachelor's or master's degree and project on the same subject or interdisciplinary subject. The foundation of the right education and knowledge is mandatory and very helpful. Asking for a guide for topic and methodology is disastrous. The role of a guide is to supervise the smooth run of the research project and nothing much. Hence, the question of part-time or full time PhD program does not arise.

Ques. What is the schedule of part-time Phd programme students at IIFT Delhi college; do the students have to attend the classes regularly?

Ans. The classes for both full time and part time PhD students happen during the weekends. The full time students of PhD program get an opportunity to carry out field visits and projects during the weekdays.

Ques. When are the classes for a part-time PhD conducted at IIT Delhi college?

Ans . Both part time and full time students study in the same class. The majority of the classes are the part of morning slot from 8 AM to 2 PM, there are classes in the evening as well. Some guest faculties do classes over the weekend.

Ques. Can we do a part time PhD programme in IIT Bombay?

Ans. Yes you can. IIT-Bombay will call two times per year. You can apply for the same and can attend a written test and/or interview.

Bibhu Deb Scholar, Doctoral Program (WP) Batch- 2022

The overall experience of the recent immersion program was highly satisfying. Nothing quite matches the energy of in-person meetings. We had the privilege of attending the dynamic pre-conference sessions of iMarC, setting the tone for the immersion program. Professor Weng Marc Lim’s session stood out as a captivating highlight, offering profound insights. Professor Murugan’s SLR classes were instrumental in bringing clarity to complex concepts. Moreover, the opportunity to engage with supervisors and TAC members fostered fruitful idea exchanges. Meetings with the Director, Dean (Academics), and Dean (Research) provided valuable perspectives on the institute’s expectations. The Ph.D. Chairperson’s reassurance of the institute’s high standards left a lasting impression, giving us a clear understanding of what lies ahead.

Harish Scholar, Doctoral Program (WP) Batch- 2023

The immersion program was a very well-crafted program. The Chief Guest of the program, Mr. Lim gave important insights on skills required to write a good paper that I can immediately apply. The ease with which he taught and made everything look so easy gave us a lot of confidence. Important topics were covered and emphasized, deepening my understanding and broadening my perspective. Session on Time Series Analysis and PLS- SEM were also very helpful and gave us enough food for thought.

I would have loved to stay in the Campus close to the professors to have more time for interactions and that is one area which the PhD office can explore for our next immersion. Overall, I would highly recommend this program to any scholar.

The instructors were very knowledgeable and engaging, and they explained the concepts and techniques with clarity and practical examples. I learned a lot from the sessions and gained valuable insights on how to conduct rigorous and impactful research. I also had the opportunity to network with other researchers and faculty members and exchange ideas and feedback. The immersion program was well-organized and facilitated by the IIM Shillong team, and I appreciate their hospitality and support. I would highly recommend the PhD program to anyone who wants to enhance their research skills and knowledge and learn from the best in the field.”

Part-time PhD courses for working professionals likely to be rolled out

The regulations allow part-time PhD programmes, provided applicants satisfy eligibility conditions for full-time PhD programmes. The changes will come into effect in the upcoming academic session.

Universities in India will now be able to offer part-time doctoral programmes to working professionals, provided they attend at least six months of the course full time, according to officials at the high education regulator.

The doctoral candidates will have to attend at least six months of course work in full time. The professionals will also need to submit a no-objection certificate (NOC) from employers.

The provision will be a part of the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022, which will soon be notified by the education ministry, officials of the University Grants Commission said on Saturday.

“Their PhD work will be assessed in the same way as done for full-time PhD students. The applicants for the part-time PhD will be working professionals and, hence, they won’t be eligible for PhD fellowship,” UGC chairperson M Jagadesh Kumar said.

The doctoral candidates will have to attend at least six months of course work in full time. The professionals will also need to submit a no-objection certificate (NOC) from employers.

“The applicants for part-time PhD will have to provide a NOC from their organizations stating that the employee is permitted to pursue studies on a part-time basis, the employee is permitted to devote sufficient time for research, facilities in the employee’s field of research are available at the place of work, and the employee will be relieved from duty, if required, to complete coursework,” Kumar said.

Many Indian Institutes of Technology, including the one in Delhi, offer part-time research programmes with similar norms. Officials at several central universities, including Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University, said they do not currently offer part-time PhD courses presently.

“No such provision is there in Delhi University. All PhD programmes are offered in regular, full-time mode to ensure high quality research,” said Rajesh Jha, political science professor at Rajdhani College.

“PhD is a full time course in JNU. However, the university allows teaching and research fellows employed only in Delhi-NCR to register as candidates,” an official said, seeking anonymity. “Working professionals from other fields are not allowed as of now.”

Affiliated universities will be allowed to set their own criteria for the part-time courses. “Since universities are autonomous, the academic councils of the universities will be allowed to decide their own entry qualifications for the part-time PhD programmes,” a UGC official said, seeking anonymity.

The commission had in March issued a draft of the amendments it made to the rules related to doctoral courses, proposing several changes, including making undergraduates who have done four-year programme and with a minimum CGPA of 7.5 eligible for PhD admissions.

The commission is also doing away with the mandatory requirement of publishing research papers in peer-reviewed journals for the submission of PhD theses.

12 Best Part-Time PhD for Working Professionals in India

Photo of Prof. Soham Pratap

There was a time when PhD was considered to be very difficult. People used to think that it required lots of dedication and knowledge, only the best-mind personalities should pursue a PhD. But today, the times have changed, and more people want to pursue a PhD be it for research or for just putting Dr. in front of their name. Talking about today, more people pursue PhD while working rather than being full-time PhD scholars.

With more and more universities providing PhD opportunities, it has become very accessible for any working professional to continue pursuing education.

With the growing importance of a PhD, many corporate working professionals prefer to gain admission to a PhD program. For better promotions and opportunities, professionals today enroll in PhD programs.

If you are reading this article you should be having questions such as – Whether one should pursue a PhD as a working professional? What is the best Part Time PhD for Working Professionals? Which universities should you apply?

  • 1.1 1. Give PhD Entrance Exam
  • 1.2 2. Select a Research Centre or Guide
  • 1.3 3. Research Proposal.
  • 1.4 4. University approval.
  • 1.5 5. Get Awarded With PhD
  • 2 Best Part-Time PhD for Working Professionals
  • 3 My Thoughts

How to Pursue a Part-Time PhD in India?

Although PhD is a full-time degree, there are no everyday classes, lectures practicals that you need to attend. In India when you are successfully admitted for PhD you will be appointed under a PhD guide or supervisor. PhD guide supports and guides you on the right path for your research journey.

PhD Scholars do not have to attend the guide every day but meet or update on your progress from time to time. But, if you are a working professional you can update about your progress, queries & findings virtually. You should also meet your guide personal time to time.

There are no exams that take place when you are pursuing PhD, nor is there any kind of grading system. But, if you are studying in India every university has the process of taking six monthly progress reports. This progress report has to be presented at your research centre in front of the university panel (every six months).

1. Give PhD Entrance Exam

To be qualified for PhD admissions, you need to have a master’s degree with a qualifying percentage of more than 55%. After which the very first step that is involved is to take the PhD entrance test/exam. Every university has its own entrance exam that you may need to take.  So you need to keep track of the PhD entrance test of the university to where you want to take admission.

The syllabus of the PhD entrance test could differ from university to university. Still, the basic pattern of the syllabus involves- research methodology, governance, education, english and communication in part I, while part 2 contains subject-specific questions.

If you are SET / NET qualified or have a post-graduate degree of M.Phil you are not required to take the PhD entrance exam and directly go for interview rounds. NET or National Eligibility Test is conducted by the central government (UGC). At the same time, the state government carries out the SET or State Eligibility Test.

2. Select a Research Centre or Guide

University may have many research centers where you can further carry out your research degree. You need to select a research center and a PhD guide under whom you would further carry your PhD degree. After providing or selecting the research center and guide, the research center may schedule your interview.

Further rounds of admission may be carried out by the research center, which may involve the submission of your research proposal & personal interview.

3. Research Proposal.

On a given date, the research centre will interview the candidate who wants to pursue a PhD. The research centre will verify all the documents and carry out the further process which may involve the presentation of your research proposal.

  • Read – How to Write Research Proposal?

The panel consists of academicians and researchers who are part of the University. The panel goes through your proposed topic for your PhD. After the successful presentation and selection of the candidate, the research Centre sends the selected candidate’s research proposal, and topic to the university for approval.

4. University approval.

The Board of Studies of the University goes through your research proposal, they will approve the topic after which you can start your research. You should present six-monthly presentations to your research center, which again involves a panel.

5. Get Awarded With PhD

Typically, a minimum of three years is required for a PhD in social sciences (literature, history, arts, commerce, humanities, management, etc.) after you have completed your six-monthly presentations, pre-VIVA, and VIVA.

You will be successfully awarded a PhD degree, after which you are qualified to call yourself Dr.

Best Part-Time PhD for Working Professionals

With an increasing number of private universities, more opportunities have been created for working professionals. The flexibility of pursuing an academic degree is an added benefit to working professionals.

Although the same can be carried out in a public university, it is much more preferred that you carry your PhD degree in a private university. There would be no difference in the degree that would be presented to you by a public university or a private university, as both of them are approved by UGC.

I have curated the list of universities where you can pursue a part-time PhD while having a job-

1. ₹50,000 SIU PET
2. ₹50,000 NMIMS Entrance Test, GATE, SET, NET
3. ₹35,000PET, NET, SET
4. ₹4,400 UGC-NET
(including JRF), UGC-CSIR NET, AYUSH-NET, DBT-JRF, ICMR-JRF,
DST-INSPIRE, GATE, SET
5. ₹32000 KSET, KSLET, NET, PET, M.Phil
6.

NIL GRE, GMAT, UGC-JRF,
ICAR-SRF
7. ₹30,000 GATE, NET, PET
8. ₹37,000
9. ₹80,000
10. ₹1,40,000 GATE, NET
11. ₹1,00,000 Written Test & Interview
12 ₹1,00,000 UGC (NET/ JRF)/ CSIR (NET/ JRF), GATE, GPAT, LPUNEST

My Thoughts

In the last table, you might have come across the fees that are charged by the universities. PhD is one of those degrees where they do not cost a lot.

As a working professional, it is easier for you to get into a PhD program that a private university offers. Private universities give you the flexibility of work and research. It gives you another perception of what research is and observing little changes. Plus after completion of your PhD you would have a whole lot of career opportunities that would be open for you.

Either I would love to assist you in achieving your PhD admission. Do mention them in the comment or fill out the Contact Us form .

Part Time PhD Program Overview

You can quickly become an expert in your field after serving your employer for several years but recognition is something that requires a certain degree or certification. A PhD program is one that many scholars and working professionals seek to get acknowledged in the industry. A PhD program specifically tailored to the needs of working executives is known as "Part time PhD."

As per UGC’s guidelines, a part-time PhD is recognized but to pursue it, the applicant must have a “No Objection Certificate” from the employer and must be able to attend at least 6 months of coursework full-time. These limitations on time commitments do not serve the intended goal of the Indian workforce.

phd vs online doctorate programs

These part-time PhD courses have an online counterpart that fits the hectic schedules of working professionals well. Online Doctorate Programs are not provided by Indian institutions since they are not approved by the UGC. However, these online programs are available at accredited international colleges like Golden Gate University, Rushford Business School, etc. During the course, recorded lectures and online classes assist you in getting your questions answered. Additionally, the Software Citation Tools you acquire over just three years aid in the advancement of your technical knowledge at work.

Numerous fields, including science and technology, business administration, law, and more, are covered in these online doctoral courses. As a result, the name of your online PhD program may change depending on the area in which you are interested. For instance, in several esteemed universities, the doctorate course in business administration is offered by the name of Doctor of Business Administration (DBA).

Let's clear up some doubts about Part Time PhD

1 is part time phd valid in india.

In India, part time PhD programs are UGC-recognized and thus valid but there are some limitations of employer acknowledgment and time investment to it set by the UGC itself.

2 Can I work along with my part-time PhD in India?

As per UGC’s regulations, NOC from the employer and full-time commitments of a minimum of 6 months to coursework are the two basic criteria that make you work along with your part-time PhD program in India.

3 Which one is better part-time PhD or online doctorate courses?

If you can spare some time from your job to dedicate to your studies, a part-time PhD would be great for you. Thus, being a little unpractical approach to managing jobs and studies, the alternative option of online doctorate courses is much better.

Is a Part Time PhD Valid in India?

Part Time PhD

If you’re considering a part time PhD in India , you may be wondering whether the program will be valid. In this post, we’ll take a look at what makes part-time higher education programs different from those offered in full-time settings, how much time it takes to complete your PhD in India on a part-time basis and how many hours per week you’ll need to devote towards your studies.

The main difference between a full and part time PhD is the length of time it takes to complete the degree.

You may wonder, “What’s the difference between a full and part time PhD ?” The main difference is that full-time aspirants complete their degrees in two to three years, while part-time aspirants take one or two years. Part-time aspirants can also choose to pursue their degrees more quickly than part time PhD & full time PhD ones by taking classes on weekends and evenings.

The most obvious advantage of taking a part time PhD program is that it will cost less than pursuing one on your own schedule—you won’t have to pay for housing, food and transportation if you live at home like many part time PhD & full time aspirants do (though this option may not be available). On top of these savings comes flexibility: If something comes up unexpectedly during your coursework. Still, there are no other options available at the moment (like family emergencies), then taking on additional hours later might work out perfectly!

Features of a Part Time PhD in India:

A part time PhD program in India offers classes in the evenings or on weekends. You will also research and write your thesis at night or on weekends, but it might take longer than three years to finish your doctorate.

If you want to complete your part time PhD in India without putting too much stress on yourself and can manage to work full-time while doing so, then this may be an option. However, if self-discipline is not one of your strengths (or if there’s something else that prevents using this route), then I would suggest going with a full-time university program instead because they have more resources available at their disposal, such as tutors who can help guide aspirants through difficult areas where they need help most often – like writing essays!

In general, you should expect to spend less money on a part time PhD than you would on a full-time one. This is because tuition costs will be lower, and you won’t need to quit your job to afford it.

In general, you should expect to spend less money on a part time PhD in India than you would on a full-time one. This is because tuition costs will be lower, and you won’t need to quit your job to afford it. Part-time programs also have fewer requirements for their aspirants; sometimes, there are no written exams or essays!

Part time PhD aspirants can take classes when they are ready, either during the day or after hours (a few schools even offer evening classes) if this sounds like something that could work for your schedule, check out our list of best online universities to find one near where you live.

What Preference does a Part Time PhD holder get instead of a Full Time PhD holder?

As a part time PhD holder, you benefit from having your coursework done at a slower pace. This means you can spend more time in the classroom and less time away from it. You also have fewer exams than full-time aspirants because most of them are made up of written assignments and exams instead of practicals or essays that require much more effort.

Part time PhD aspirants tend to be more practical in their approach to learning since they have less stress about getting through with all their tasks quickly so they can start working on other aspects of their lives like work or family responsibilities which might prove difficult if one doesn’t manage their time correctly while a PhD in India .

Employers often value part-time study as evidence of a candidate’s commitment and ability to manage multiple responsibilities at the same time.

Employers often value part-time study as evidence of a candidate’s commitment and ability to manage multiple responsibilities at the same time. It’s not unusual for employers to ask if you can juggle your full-time job with a part time PhD in India , so you must have this skill set to be considered for senior roles.

Part time PhD s may have difficulty getting jobs in their field or applying for jobs that require specific skills or expertise. However, employers also appreciate candidates who can do more than one thing at once—primarily if those skills are related!

For example, if you’re applying for a job that requires scientific knowledge and research skills, it’s possible to demonstrate those abilities by taking on extra work in your spare time.  Part-Time PhD Vs Full-Time

Deciding whether to pursue a full-time or part-time PhD is dependent on many factors, including the PhD topic, preferences of supervisors, department policies, and personal circumstances. You will need to be present at lab work for some types of Ph.D. research. Part-time PhDs may not be suitable for some topics due to various reasons.

Part-time PhDs are not available at all in some universities. But, personal circumstances are the most important. You have to make that decision. For working professionals, a Part-time Ph.D. program is the best option. A full-time PhD degree is more intensive than a part-time PhD degree. It requires more reading and research time.

A full-time research scholar has a higher chance of being able to focus on their research.

Full-time PhD students are able to adapt their schedule to fit their program at the university where they are studying.

Part-time PhD candidates may take more time to complete their doctorate as they have a lot of distractions from other things and might not be able to finish their thesis in time.

The most significant advantage of a full-time Ph.D. is that it can be finished in a short duration. Candidates can finish their Ph.D. degrees in a very short amount of time. It is possible to complete a doctorate program in a short period of three years. But in some Universities, Part-time Ph.D. holders may have to wait up to 5 years to obtain the same title.

Ph.D. Programmes in India: Comprehensive Analysis of Scope, Challenges, and Future Trends

part time phd duration in india

The three magical letters – Ph.D. – hold an incredible charm in the world of academia. It implies the vertex of intellectual achievement, a dig into a particular field, and the craved title of “Doctorate”.  But prior to packing your emblematic luggage for this academic voyage, hold on! A  Ph.D. programme is a highly demanding, elating, and usually gruelling experience! So, is a Ph.D. degree right for you? Let’s uncover the scope, trends, and challenges you might cross-path with before you take PhD admission in 2024 .

Deciphering the Scope: A Sphere of Research and Beyond

A Ph.D. programme in India isn’t just an expansion to your Post-graduate degree. It is a paradigm shift. You move from consuming deeper knowledge to building it. The heart of Ph.D. revolves around original/authentic research. You will dig deeper into a specific niche within your desired domain, create a research question, conduct in-depth studies, and contribute the latest knowledge to the pre-existing research body.

However, the scope of PhD programmes in India goes far beyond the research. It loads you with a massive skill set. Analytic expertise, critical thinking, and problem–solving abilities- these become second nature. You will nurture not just your verbal but non-verbal skills as you display your research findings at conferences and publish your work in international academic journals.  Some potential research areas are-

  • Computer Science
  • Electronics Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Operation Management
  • Mathematics
  • Liberal Studies & Humanities

And so on!

The Challenge is Real: Hurdles on the Path

While the quest of a PhD programme in India is indubitably remunerative, it is also bristling with daunting challenges. Addressing and comprehending these challenges can help aspiring PhD students prepare as well as steer their doctoral journey more efficaciously.

  • Research Pressure & Workload : The demands of escorting original research can be a bit nerve-wracking. PhD scholars usually witness high pressure to produce significant outcomes, publish papers, and meet deadlines. Keeping a balance between research with coursework, teaching responsibilities, and personal life can be overwhelming.

Solution : Manage time effectively, set realistic goals, break tasks into smaller parts, take breaks and practice self-care.

  • Funding & Financial Constraints : Getting funding for PhD studies can be a major hurdle. While numerous institutions like us; offer scholarships, grants, and assistantships to ease out the financial instability.

Solution : Apply for diverse funding sources, network for opportunities, budget wisely, and seek part-time work in the field.

  • Isolation & Mental Health : The nature of PhD research, without a doubt, can be isolating. Numerous candidates spend hours working independently, which can become the reason for loneliness and isolation. Mental health issues such as anxiety and depression are prevalent among PhD students, making it imperative to seek support & balance a healthy work-life balance.

Solution : Build a support network, engage with peers, join activities, and utilise mental health resources, and practice mindfulness and physical activity.

  • Work-Life Balance : Attaining a balance between a PhD programme and personal life demands is challenging. Long hours, research setbacks, and the pressure to publish can take a brutal toll on relationships as well as mental well-being.

Solution : Prioritise tasks, set boundaries, create a balanced schedule, seek support from family and advisors, and take time for self-care.

The Trends in PhD Programme in India

As the world is constantly revolutionising with the rapid pace, so do PhD programmes. Below mentioned are some of the brimming trends shaping the arena of doctoral education:

Current tendencies in Ph.D. programmes all over the world lean toward interdisciplinary research—working at the junction of several fields. This opens up the opportunity to find more comprehensive answers to intricate problems and create collaborations between different academic disciplines.
The advent of digital technologies has revolutionised education, and PhD programmes were not left untouched. Online and hybrid models are becoming more popular, and this campus-based movement to off-campus modes has enhanced flexibility among students, especially those constrained by professional or personal commitments that would not allow them to attend traditional, on-campus programmes.
In addition to this subject-specific knowledge, PhD programmes are increasingly concerned with nurturing the development of transferable skills such as critical thinking, communication, project management, and leadership. These are real cornerstones of achievement in both academic career paths and elsewhere.
PhD programmes are fostering international collaboration more than ever. Students also have opportunities to interact with their researchers and institutions worldwide, attend international conferences, and work at global research projects.
There is a greater focus on doing work that makes the world sustainable and socially well: PhD students increasingly are encouraged to perform work that covers global issues such as climate change, inequality, and public health.

CrowdStrike’s Role In the Microsoft IT Outage, Explained

T he major Microsoft IT outage on Friday that grounded flights, sent TV stations off air, and disrupted online hospital systems has been linked to a third party—a cybersecurity technology firm named CrowdStrike.

CrowdStrike’s CEO George Kurtz has spoken out about the outage, apologizing for the disruption caused.

As the fallout from the event continues to impact people worldwide, here’s a breakdown of how exactly CrowdStrike is involved and what transpired.

What caused the Microsoft outage?

Early Friday, companies in Australia running Microsoft’s Windows operating system started reporting devices showing, what is commonly referred to as, “ blue screens of death .” According to Microsoft’s website, this happens “if a serious problem causes Windows to shut down or restart unexpectedly.”

These disruptions then spread rapidly, impacting companies and communities around the world. The U.K., India, Germany, the Netherlands, and the U.S., reported disruptions. Meanwhile,  United, Delta, and American Airlines issued a “ global ground stop ” on all flights.

The cause of this outage came from a faulty update from CrowdStrike, deployed to computers running Microsoft Windows. The issue was specifically linked to Falcon, one of the companies main products, which does not impact Mac or Linux operating systems.

Launched in 2012 CrowdStrike’s cybersecurity software is now used by 298 of Fortune 500 companies , including banks, energy companies, healthcare companies, and food companies.

According to David Brumley, professor of electrical and computer engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, this was a perfect storm of issues. “Their code is buggy, and it was sitting there as a ticking time bomb,” Brumley says.

He says there are three steps cybersecurity teams should typically implement when rolling out an update. First, there should have been rigorous software testing to catch bugs; second, there should have been testing on different types of machines; and third, the roll out should have been slow with smaller sets of users to screen for negative ramifications.

“Companies like Google will roll out updates incrementally so if the update is bad, at least it will have limited damage,” says Brumley, adding that the issue may only get more pronounced.

“What we’re seeing and what we’ll continue to see is a huge consolidation in the cybersecurity department, and that’s why we're seeing so many people affected at once,” says Brumley. “We need to be asking, ‘What choices can we give people if companies mess up?’”

How has CrowdStrike responded to the outage felt worldwide?

Appearing via a video link on The Today Show on Friday, CrowdStrike’s CEO delivered an apology to the public:

“We're deeply sorry for the impact that we've caused to customers, to travelers, to anyone affected by this, including our companies,” Kurtz said. “That update had a software bug in it and caused an issue with the Microsoft operating system...we identified this very quickly and remediated the issue.”

Kurtz was clear that this was not a cybersecurity issue nor an attack of any kind, but an issue coming from inside the company.

Though they’ve deployed the changes necessary to help remedy the issue, customers are still having issues, and it may be some time before systems across the globe are all fully operational.

In a statement emailed to TIME, CrowdStrike said that they are “actively working with customers impacted by a defect found in a single content update for Windows hosts.”

They also clarified, once more, for those concerned that the issue is not a security incident, and that the problem has been “identified, isolated, and a fix has been deployed.”

Kurtz has also shared this information on his personal X (formerly Twitter) account.

CrowdStrike is actively working with customers impacted by a defect found in a single content update for Windows hosts. Mac and Linux hosts are not impacted. This is not a security incident or cyberattack. The issue has been identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed. We… — George Kurtz (@George_Kurtz) July 19, 2024

According to Forbes , Kurtz’s net worth had dropped $300 million as of Friday afternoon—from $3.2 billion to $2.9 billion–amid fallout from the IT outage. The CEO’s wealth is enmeshed with CrowdStrike shares, which dropped drastically following the incident.

On The Today Show segment , Kurtz said that CrowdStrike has been on the phone with customers all night, and that the issue was resolved for many when they rebooted their systems. However, he says the company will not “relent until we get every customer back to where they were and keep the bad guys out of their systems.”

If hosts are still crashing and unable to stay online to download CrowdStrike’s fix, the company has provided a workaround to the issue on its blog.

How has Microsoft responded to the IT outage?

On Thursday night, Microsoft 365 posted on X that the company was “working on rerouting the impacted traffic to alternate systems to alleviate impact” and that they were “observing a positive trend in service availability.”

As the disruption continued on Saturday, David Weston, Vice President of Enterprise and OS Security at Microsoft, published a blog post titled, “Helping our customers through the CrowdStrike outage.”

In the blog post, Weston said that Microsoft estimates “CrowdStrike’s update affected 8.5 million Windows devices, or less than one percent of all Windows machines.” Still, he goes on to say that the outage “demonstrates the interconnected nature of our broad ecosystem—global cloud providers, software platforms, security vendors and other software vendors, and customers.”

Weston also stated that Microsoft is “working around the clock” to help customers. He referenced the steps they are taking with CrowdStrike to mediate the effects of the outage, the company’s own post demonstrating manual fixes of the issue . Customers can also track the status of the incident through the “Azure Status Dashboard.”

TIME has reached out to Microsoft 365 for further comment.
