The Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), within its Faculty of Biosciences’ Department of Plant Sciences, is offering a full-time, 9-month substitute researcher position in the field of plant molecular biology. This role is based in the Genetics, Evolution, and Sustainable Crop Production section. The researcher will be actively involved in two major projects. The first focuses on the molecular evolution of temperate grasses, specifically the transition from perennial to annual life-history traits, employing a range of methodologies including growth experiments, functional genomics, CRISPR gene editing, and plant transformation. The second project delves into the genome structure of Nardus stricta’s asexual and sexual populations using ddRAD sequencing. Additional responsibilities include supervising PhD and MSc students, conducting laboratory work, and analyzing data.

Requirements:

• Academic Qualifications : A PhD degree (or equivalent) in Plant Molecular Biology.
• Solid background in conducting molecular experiments in plants.

PhD scholarship within environmental microbiology, Norway

The Faculty of Chemistry, Biotechnology and Food Science (KBM) at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has a vacant 3 year PhD position within environmental microbiology.

The successful candidate will be anchored in the NMBU Nitrogen group , which consists of members from the research group Microbial Ecology and Physiology at KBM and partners at the Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Natural Resource Management (MINA).

The KBM faculty is located at Ås Campus, 30 km south of Oslo, and has approximately 130 employees spread over 11 research groups, with focus on microbiology, microbial ecology, fundamental and applied enzymology, enzyme discovery, and bioprocessing technology, The current project entails research collaboration with other groups at KBM, as well as two international partners.

The NMBU Nitrogen group is a mid-sized (20-25 people), dynamic research group spanning two NMBU faculties. We have ongoing collaborations with several strong research groups at universities across the world (Europe, USA, China, New Zealand) and with national and international industries.

Research project

The project title is Phenotypic diversification in denitrifying bacteria, mechanisms, prevalence and implications , short name Dephend . It is financed by the Norwegian Research Council (NRC) through the prestigious FRIPRO Young Research Talents program. In this project, they will take a deep dive into the physiology of prokaryotes that reduce nitrate and nitrite to N2 via NO and N2O using a set of four core enzymes. It is important to understand because these organisms are responsible for most of the N2O emission to the atmosphere. Meanwhile, they also carry nature’s only enzyme for reducing N2O to harmless N2. Hence, their regulatory biology effectively controls the emission of N2O to the atmosphere. The group have discovered a phenomenon where genetically identical cells in the same culture choose to synthesize different sets of the denitrification enzymes. This is the first time that such bet-hedging has been demonstrated in the regulation of prokaryote respiration. It is important because such bet hedging organisms help to reduce the emission of N2O to the atmopshere : when facing hypoxia, a minority of the population carries NIR+NOR, the N2O source, whereas all carry N2OR, the N2O sink.

The PhD candidate will work closely with the project leader and other members of the group, with access to state-of-the-art infrastructure for microbiology and molecular biology, and unique incubation robots for monitoring the kinetics of O2 NO, N2O and N2.

As part of the project, the candidate will study the respiratory physiology of denitrifying prokaryotes (mainly bacteria) through :

• Molecular manipulations of selected strains
• Gas kinetics and gene expression in model organism(s) and mutants under a range of conditions
• Fluorescence microscopy and microfluidics
• Proteomics of denitrifying cultures

The successful candidate is expected to enter a plan for the progress of the work towards a PhD degree during the first months of the appointment, with a view to completing a doctorate within the PhD scholarship period.

Academic qualifications

The successful applicant must meet the conditions defined for admission to a PhD programme at NMBU. The applicant must have an academically relevant education corresponding to a five-year Norwegian degree programme, where 120 credits are at master’s degree level. The applicant must have a documented strong academic background from previous studies, and be able to document proficiency in both written and oral English.

PhD scholarship within Forest Ecology

Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Natural Resource Management (MINA) at Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has a vacant 3-year PhD position in forest ecology.

Forestry has made long-term impacts on the biodiversity and ecosystem functioning of boreal forests. Among the most important differences between managed and near-natural forests are the amount and diversity of dead wood. The successful candidate for the announced position will focus on how communities and food webs of soil invertebrates are affected by the availability of dead wood. To reach this aim, we will apply novel fingerprinting methods in biochemistry together with competent collaborators.

The position is funded by MINA and will be linked to the ongoing EcoForest project (“Forestry effects on biodiversity, carbon stocks and ecological processes in mature boreal forests”, 2021-26) funded by the Research Council of Norway.

EcoForest is a unique collaboration between several research institutions (NMBU, UiO, NINA, NIBIO), industry (Norges skogeierforbund, Norskog, Oslo kommunes skoger, and NGOs (Sabima, WWF). This collaboration will provide much needed knowledge for guiding future management of boreal forests, as well as ecological insight at the research front.

The starting date for the position will ideally be June 2024, but for the right candidate, both earlier and later starts may be negotiable.

The applicant is made aware that an application for a PhD position at NMBU is at the same time an application for admission to a PhD programme at the institution. The documentation that is necessary to ensure that the admission requirements are met must be uploaded as an attachment.

The main activities will be:

• Lab work, such as sorting and identification of invertebrates.
• Identify food sources and trophic levels of invertebrates by analysis of stable isotopes and other analytical techniques.
• Organize and analyze data, write scientific papers and disseminate results.

There will be a possibility to do other types of analyses, such as DNA metabarcoding, respiration or elemental analysis according to the candidate’s qualification and interest.

The successful candidate is expected to enter a plan for the progress of the work towards a PhD degree during the first months of the appointment, with a view to completing a doctorate within the PhD scholarship period.

The successful applicant must meet the conditions defined for admission to a PhD programme at NMBU. The applicant must have an academically relevant education corresponding to a five-year master’s degree or a cand.med.vet. degree, with a learning outcome corresponding to the descriptions in the Norwegian Qualification Framework, second cycle. The Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Natural Resource Management (MINA) works with nature and the environment, sustainable use of natural resources, biological and geological processes.

MINA’s employees undertake teaching, research and dissemination within the fields of geology, hydrology and limnology, soil science, environmental chemistry, forestry, ecology, natural resource management, renewable energy, and nature-based tourism.

Our vision is to be a key actor in knowledge production and dissemination, and our goal is to deliver research of high, international quality, and varied and excellent teaching. The faculty’s employees are significant participants within their respective fields of expertise, both nationally and internationally. The faculty is dominated by a vital research culture and high levels of scientific production.

The faculty has about 200 employees, 90 PhD students and 650 students.

The Life and Food Science programme of the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) shall qualify students for research of international standard within the faculty's subject areas, and for other work in society where there are high demands on scientific insight and analytical thinking, in accordance with recognised principles of academic and research ethics.

• To be admitted to one of NMBU`s eight PhD programmes, you need to have the following requirements met: education background, sufficient knowledge of the English language, and funding. In addition, the faculty must have supervisory capacity within the relevant field of study.
• You must have a master's degree with a scope of at least 120 credits (ECTS) that is based on a bachelor’s degree of minimum 180 credits (ECTS), or a cand.med.vet. degree, or an integrated master’s degree with a scope of minimum 300 credits (ECTS).

About the faculty

The Faculty of Chemistry, Biotechnology and Food Science at NMBU represents a broad spectre of scientific fields encompassing basic natural sciences as well as application of these towards food, biotechnology and environmental issues.

We have approximately 180 employees and 600 students in seven different study programs. At KBM, we teach several basic subjects such as chemistry, statistics, biochemistry, microbiology and molecular biology for all students at NMBU.

Research projects at the faculty

The Faculty of Chemistry, Biotechnology and Food Science (KBM) was originally established in October 2003, and is the result of a merge between the former Department of Food Science, the Department of Chemistry and Biotechnology and the Department of Mathematical Sciences at NMBU.

KBM represents a broad spectre of scientific fields encompassing basic natural sciences as well as the application of these towards food, biotechnology and environmental issues. The Faculty is responsible for education, research and information within its remit.

At KBM we focus on studies, research, dissemination of research and consulting within the basic natural sciences and the use of this knowledge in relation to food, biotechnology and the environment. All of these are focus areas for the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU).

KBM aims to strengthen its position, and has several collaborations, networks and research projects both international as well as within NMBU/Campus Ås and in Norway. Our goal is to further develop these collaborations.
