A Sample Solar Panel Manufacturing Plant Business Plan Template

1. industry overview.

Players in the solar panel manufacturing industry are responsible for manufacturing solar panels and solar cells and supply these products to solar panel installers and downstream residential, commercial and utility customers. Please note that a solar panel manufacturing company may also engage in the sale and installation of solar panels to end users.

If you have been keeping tabs with the solar panel manufacturing industry, you will agree that the industry has experienced only modest growth between 2012 and 2017.

The industry has been beleaguered by high competition from low-cost Asian solar panel manufacturing companies and an appreciating US dollar, while the volatile prices of natural gas and steaming coal have decreased the cost of other forms of energy and shifted demand away from solar energy.

Going forward, the industry is expected to continue its modest growth due to increased demand for solar panels and cells. This projected rise in demand is expected to be the result of government programs, including an increase in the number of states with renewable portfolio standards.

The truth is that the solar panel manufacturing industry has galloped ahead in recent years as a result of the rapid technological developments in our world, and favorable government policies. Going forward, the demand for solar panel installation is projected to continue to experience rapid growth.

With the ongoing government aid in the form of tax credits and rebates, along with technological advances in solar energy, as well as the rising popularity of solar power purchase agreements (SPPAs), the revenue generated in the industry is expected to grow sharply.

The Solar Panel Manufacturing industry is indeed a large and growing industry especially in countries such as China, Japan, South Korea, India, Malaysia, Russia and the united states of America. Statistics has it that the Solar Panel Manufacturing industry in the United States of America is worth $1bn, with an estimated growth rate of 0.4 percent.

There are about 65 registered and licensed solar farm developer businesses in the United States and they are responsible for directly employing about 7,851 people. First solar is the leading player in this industry; they have the largest market share.

A report recently published by IBISWorld shows that the Solar Panel Manufacturing industry is in a declining phase of its life. Industry value added, which measures an industry’s contribution to the overall economy, is forecast to decrease at an annualized rate of 3.3 percent in the 10 years to 2022.

The report also stated that during the same period, US GDP is projected to grow at an annualized rate of 2.1 percent. As a result, this industry’s importance to the overall economy is decreasing, indicating a declining industry.

The report further stated that while government assistance to industry manufacturers and downstream customers has fueled the growth of solar power, most gains have been made in solar installation and solar power generation. Domestic manufacturers have performed poorly due to competition from imports, especially those from low-cost Asian countries like Malaysia and China.

Most people who have stakes in the industry will agree that the solar panel manufacturing industry has come to stay and of course it is one industry that plays key roles in the business world and in our homes because it is one eco – friendly way of generating power.

Over and above, the solar panel manufacturing industry is very open to any investor who has the required startup capital, acquired the required training, skills and perhaps professional certifications to start his or her own solar panel manufacturing plant.

Part of what the team of business consultant did was to work with the management of our organization in conducting a comprehensive SWOT analysis for Generation Next® Solar Technologies, LLC. Here is a summary from the result of the SWOT analysis that was conducted on behalf of Generation Next® Solar Technologies, LLC;

We are a solar panel manufacturing company that is well – positioned to take advantage of government subsidies and other grants, we are game when it comes to development of new products and we have the ability to comply with environmental regulations.

So also, we have a team of certified and highly trained and experience solar panel installation, maintenance and repair engineers and technicians, a team with excellent qualifications and experience in various niche areas in the solar panel manufacturing industry.

Aside from the synergy that exists in our carefully selected workforce, our services will be guided by best practices in the industry.

As a new solar farm and solar panel manufacturing company in Corpus Christi – Texas, it might take some time for our organization to break into the market and gain acceptance especially from top profile clients (solar panel distributors) in the already highly competitive Solar Panel Manufacturing industry; that is perhaps our major weakness.

Another weakness is that we may not have the required cash to pump into promoting our business the way we would want to.

  • Opportunities:

No doubt, the opportunities in The Solar Panel Manufacturing industry is massive considering the support from the government and of course the number of individuals and corporate organizations who are now switching over to alternative energy.

In the United States, even with tariffs against Chinese manufacturers in place, the value of imports has risen. Increased government initiatives will help spur demand from downstream customers. As a solar panel manufacturing company, we are ready to take advantage of any opportunity that is available in the industry.

High import competition has been the main threat to the industry over the five-year period. Just like any other business, other threats that we are likely going to face is economic downturn. Another threat that may likely confront us is the arrival of a new solar farm or solar panel manufacturing company in same location where our target market exists and who may want to adopt same Business model like us.

7. MARKET ANALYSIS

  • Market Trends

If you are keeping tabs with happenings in the solar panel manufacturing industry, you will agree that the demand for solar panel powered devices has skyrocketed many thanks to substantial government support. So also, technological advancements in solar panel construction will definitely lead to a greater supply of low-cost panels, making solar panels more accessible for individual consumers, also lowering demand.

Another trend is that the solar panel manufacturing industry has galloped ahead in recent years as a result of the rapid technological developments in our world, falling solar panel costs and favorable government policy. In the coming years, demand for solar panel installation is projected to continue growing.

Ongoing government aid in the form of tax credits and rebates, along with technological advances in solar energy, as well as the rising popularity of solar power purchase agreements (SPPAs), are expected to help revenue grow sharply going forward.

The demand for new solar panels has been backed primarily by government incentives such as the Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC), which encouraged private investment into solar technologies by offering tax credits.

With these incentives, solar panels and other solar-power development projects have been built at accelerating rates over the past five years. Because solar technology is not yet cost-competitive with other types of energy used in electricity generation, such as coal and natural gas, government incentives have been the driving force behind industry growth.

Solar Panel Manufacturing Plant

A solar panel is a device that converts sunlight into electrical energy using photovoltaic cells. It is manufactured from the collection of solar cells made using silicon, boron, and phosphorus, which are arranged in a grid-like pattern on the surface. The panel is made of glass, plastic, and metal materials to efficiently absorb the sun’s rays. A solar panel is widely used in power systems for remote sensing systems, telecommunication equipment, cabins, and residential and commercial solar systems. It relies on mounting structures that point panels toward the sun to convert the direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC). As compared to conventional panels, solar panels are highly cost-effective and versatile, reduce dependence on traditional sources of electricity, and help minimize the carbon footprint.

Solar panels are installed on surfaces or rooftops with access to direct sunlight and require minimum to no maintenance. The utilization of solar panels has increased across the globe as they reduce dependence on conventional sources of electricity, help to minimize the carbon footprint, and combat the harmful emissions of greenhouse gases.

The increasing demand for renewable power sources is one of the key factors driving the market growth. In line with this, the growing awareness of the negative impacts of greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants on the environment has led to an increasing demand for renewable energy sources such as solar power. Moreover, the widespread product adoption in the residential sector for grid-connected electricity generation is acting as another growth-inducing factor. Apart from this, the introduction of solar panels with an anti-reflection coating that reduces reflection and increases light absorption of solar cells is providing an impetus to the market growth. Additionally, the rising environmental concerns and the increasing demand for alternative energy sources that do not contribute to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are propelling the market growth. Furthermore, the introduction of ultrathin solar panels, which are lighter and more flexible than glass-based variants, is positively influencing the market growth. These ultrathin solar panels are superior to conventional solar panels in terms of efficiency and cost-effectiveness and can be integrated into any surface. Besides this, the implementation of various government initiatives to encourage the use of solar panels by offering incentives for solar energy projects and spreading awareness among consumers through several programs and campaigns is creating a positive outlook for the market. Other factors, including significant expansion in the electrical industry, various technological advancements to increase efficiency and durability, and enhanced research and development (R&D) activities, are anticipated to drive the market growth.

Solar Panel Manufacturing Process:

  • Polysilicon is obtained from quartz with the application of carbon arc in an electric arc furnace.
  • The obtained polysilicon is added with boron at high temperature to form p-type semiconductor material.
  • By casting molten polysilicon in a block, an ingot or silicon block is formed.
  • To obtain wafers, ingots are separated using wire saws.
  • Wafers should be subjected to a solar etching process to produce hexagonal or rectangular-shaped wafers which can be fitted together in solar cells.
  • After cleaning the wafers to form an N-type semiconductor layer, they are introduced to a phosphorous diffusion furnace.
  • An anti-reflective coating is applied to the top part of the cell to reduce the loss of sunlight.
  • Electrical contacts are used to connect solar cells.
  • Aluminized conductive material is deposited on the back surface of each cell by displacing the diffused phosphorous layer.
  • Each solar cell is then tested and arranged in a framework to form a solar panel. 48 solar cells panel is good for small residential roofs while 60 solar cells are the standard size.

Types Of Solar Panels :

1) monocrystalline solar panels:.

Monocrystalline solar panels are the oldest type of solar panels and comprise monocrystalline solar cells made out of pure silicon. These cells are expensive as they have higher power output, occupy less space, and tend to last longer. These panels will have a large surface area for better absorption of sunlight and have an efficiency of between 18 to 24 percent. Monocrystalline solar panels have greater heat resistance and they last up to 30 years. Entrepreneurs looking to start solar panel manaufacturing plant can start this monocrystalline solar panels production.

2) Polycrystalline solar panels:

These panels are also called as multi-crystalline panels and are considered as mid-range panels as they are less efficient compared to monocrystalline panels and are easily affordable. To make wafers, raw silicon is melted and poured into a square mold. Polycrystalline solar panels are made up of poly fragments of silicon crystals and do generate much electricity compared to monocrystalline panels as there is less freedom for the electrons to move in poly fragments of silicon but the process involved in solar panel manufacturing plant is extremely simple and faster.

3) Thin-film solar panels:

These solar panels are thin and flexible as the cells used for these panels will be 350 times thinner than the crystalline wafers used in the other 2 types of solar panels. They are made from layers of semiconducting materials such as silicon, copper indium gallium selenide, and cadmium telluride and have an efficiency of around 12 percent and tend to degrade more quickly compared to crystalline panels. The semiconductor layer is placed between conducting layers, with glass on top making it look attractive and can be used as solar roof tiles. Due to its lightweight construction customers can save installation costs making it the most affordable panel and recognized as a second-generation solar panel.

Solar Cell Manufacturing – Detailed Project Report by Solar Experts

India today has an installed domestic solar Cell manufacturing capacity of over 2000 MW, but the potential is a lot more. With the central government providing an enormous impetus on ‘Make in India’ for Solar, and with a super-ambitious target of 100 GW of Solar by 2022, prospects are good for solar Cell manufacturing in India. For those investors keen on putting up a solar cell manufacturing plant, Solar Mango, India’s leading solar power consulting and research firm, can provide a comprehensive, bankable DPR.

Solar Mango strongly believes that DPR is not just a protocol document for the banks and other stake holders to have it in their files.

Developing a DPR that convinces the relevant stakeholders about the viability of the project in a scientific and justifiable manner could make all the difference between Yes and No for the project.

Who will benefit from our Solar Cell Manufacturing DPR?

Large Conglomerates/Businesses looking to diversify into cell manufacturing Large energy companies and established  entrepreneurs keen on venturing into solar cell  manufacturing business

Solar businesses – solar module makers, EPCs, developers, other component manufacturers – keen on vertical integration into solar cell manufacturing

What is Unique about Solar Mango’s DPR?

Solar cell manufacturing has its potential, and its risks and challenges. It is important that a DPR provides critical inputs on both these aspects.

Our custom solar cell manufacturing DPR, in addition to providing detailed inputs on the business model, technologies and financials, also includes sections on risks and risk mitigation that clearly spell out areas of uncertainties, and also how the adverse effects of each uncertainty can be mitigated.

Each DPR is specially crafted for the specific investment and investor and includes the latest data and estimates for evaluating the market, technical and economic feasibility of the project. We also factor in the latest in government policies and also incorporate industry perspectives on possible future trends in such policies in regulations.

Why Solar Mango?

In the past decade, Solar Mango has provided over 25 Indian businesses with such high quality DPRs for solar cell and module manufacturing, and other solar energy manufacturing opportunities- businesses that range from small entrepreneurs putting up 10 MW solar module manufacturing plants to large industrial giants planning to invest in 500 MW solar cell manufacturing lines, and even prospects who are considering investing in large-scale solar wafer manufacturing.

Project report for Solar panel manufacturing

Create your own project report in less than 10 mins., introduction.

Project report for Solar panel manufacturing is as follows:

In India, the total solar power generation capacity increased from 461 MW in 2011 to 6,763 MW in 2016. Over the last few years, the solar power generation capacity in the country has increased tremendously owing to favourable government initiatives coupled with development in manufacturing technology of solar panels.Indian Solar Power Industry is anticipated to have double digit growth during next few years, due to the government’s policy to increase the share of solar power in the country’s energy mix and falling equipment (PV Module) costs globally. Moreover, solar power tariff in India has witnessed a drastic fall over the last few years. The solar power tariffs in India have fallen in nominal terms from INR 15 /Kwh in 2009 to INR 2.44/ Kwh in 2017, due to decline in module prices and improvements in capacity utilization factor. This recent fall came in during the online bidding for a 750 MW solar power park being set up at Bhadla near Jodhpur with viability gap funding (VGF) from Solar energy corporation of India Limited. However, the ever-declining solar power tariffs has encouraged good investments into the sector but have raised concerns over the long -term sustainability of the projects.

Solar Business Opportunities in India

If you look at the Indian solar business industry there are basically 7 types of business opportunities. Focusing on any one type of business listed below would help you in achieving success.

Manufacturing of Solar Panels:

Setting up a Solar Panel manufacturing business in India is not an easy task. Because you will be directly competing with established Chinese and Indian manufacturers.

These manufacturers already have market contacts and they are providing materials for a low price with good quality.

However, if you want to start a small solar panel manufacturing plant, you can follow the below steps,

a. Market Research : Make proper market research. Understand demand and supply in your region.

b. Location : Select a location considering both demand and transportation difficulties.

c. Factory Size : Finalize the factory size. Consider future extension opportunities as well

d. Machinery and Equipment: Purchase it from the dealers. You can import international brands with the help of local dealers.

You require machinery like a back sheet cutting station, Framing machine, solar cell soldering machine, visual inspection station, etc.

e. Material Procurement: Set-up a warehouse within your plant to store raw materials and finished products.

Raw materials include Solar cells, solar glass, module frame, backseats, junction boxes, sealants, etc.

f. Arranging Manpower: You need both skilled and non-skilled manpower for your manufacturing unit.

g. Licenses and Certificates: Get required licenses and certificates from the government and local authorities.

h. Connecting with Distributors: Deal with good distributors to create a supply chain and deliver your products to the market.

To set up a small-scale solar panel plant up to 10 MWp, you may require an investment of approximately 1 crore Indian rupees.

If you have an interest in the electrical industry, instead of solar panels, you may look at manufacturing electrical products like sting combiner boxes, fuse boxes, connectors, etc.

Solar Panel Distributor Business Plan:

Solar panel manufacturers need distributers to reach their products into the local market. The second business opportunity in the solar energy industry is to become a solar panel distributor.

A solar distributor purchases solar panels from manufacturers in bulk and distributes them to the local market by selling them to dealers and retailers.

You need to make an in-depth local market analysis before deciding to become a solar panel distributor.

Rural areas have a good opportunity because of the infrequent distribution of power or electricity.

Location and Warehouse: Select a location with good connectivity to the local market. You need a warehouse to store the purchased products.

Licences & Registration: Get all licenses, registrations, GST & business insurance if required. How to get products?

The next step is to tie up with an international or domestic manufacturer, considering your local market preferences.

Some of the top International solar panel manufacturers are Trina Solar, Canadian Solar, Jinko Solar, Hanwha W Cells, etc.

In India, we have some top brands like Vikram Solar , Adani, Waaree Solar, etc. You can contact any brand through their website, by filling a distributor/dealer form.

If they have a requirement in your region and you are ready to invest, then they might accept your request. Investments vary from one brand to another.

Get Leads: Reach local dealers and retailers. This would be easy if you tied up with a reputed solar panel brand.

If you have expertise in the electrical industry, you can become a solar inverter distributor by following the same steps mentioned above.

A solar inverter is an advanced version of UPS, Battery inverters. Some of the top brands are ABB, Delta, and Emerson, etc.

Independent Solar Consultant:

A lot of people would like to know is it worth full to install solar on their property, and could benefit from a consultant opinion that looks at the various options and guides them through the entire planning process.

A solar consultant advises customers on the different options available in the solar industry for their upcoming projects.

You can recommend different solar products to your client by providing a detailed analysis of energy-saving and cost estimates.

Compared to the other two, this solar business plan requires much less investment. You need to spend money on promotions, staff, and office rent.

Other advantages are like, there will not be any commitment with a single brand, and you can recommend any brand to the client, as per their requirement.

After getting advice from a consultant, the customer will approach an EPC (Engineering Procurement and construction) contractor to proceed with his project.

Become an EPC Contractor:

EPC contractor’s bags a project from the government or private sector, do the engineering works like design and planning, procure the material from the distributor or manufacturer, and execute the project through his team.

Sometimes EPC contractors hire solar sub-contractors to do the execution or the installation work.

How to become an EPC contractor? After making proper market research get an office space on rent, register your company & get required licenses and certificates from the government and local authorities.

You need manpower to handle both office and site tasks. In the office, you need staff for cost estimation, design, planning, marketing & accounts departments, etc.

If you are planning a small scale EPC, then you can assign multi-tasking to your staf. For site works, you require a supervisor or foreman, skilled and un-skilled labors, drivers, etc.

How to get projects? Start bidding in both government and private sector projects. In the initial stage work with low-profit margins to get some experience.

Getting a project, in the beginning, might be a bit difficult.

This is because you will not be having successfully executed project lists to gain the client’s trust.

So you can start with small projects in the first few months, then you can step into bigger ones. Solar Installation Business Plan

If you have experience in the solar industry then you can easily start a solar installation business.

If you are a newbie, then you can join any training courses and get enough knowledge in the field.

Solar installers can tie-up with EPC contractors, to work as a solar sub-contractor. Here you will be working under EPC contractor to install their designed products.

Since most of the EPCs have their own team for installation, it would not be an easy task to get a tie-up with one.

So getting direct clients is very important because you cannot depend on third-party contractors.

Start executing small residential projects, get some experience, and gradually increase your contacts.

Begin with a sole proprietorship registration and set up a team for executing the work.

Solar Service and Cleaning Business Plan:

One of the best solar business opportunities is starting a solar service and cleaning business. This doesn’t require big investment compare to other solar business plans we have discussed.

There is a need for solar service and cleaning jobs because clean solar panels produce comparatively more electricity than dirty panels.

And since solar panels are located on rooftops, many customers would prefer to hire somebody to keep their solar panels clean rather than clean them themselves.

How to start? Get some knowledge about the solar cleaning process and understand the need for cleaning service in your locality.

Register as a sole proprietor and get GST certification.

You need a used vehicle for transportation of labor and tools to the site. Require Basic tools like Water Fed Cleaning Pole, Ladders, Hose, Sprayers, Cleaning Solution, Etc.

Running a solar cleaning business can be done by 1 person, however, it’s not going to be easy.

In the beginning stages of starting your solar cleaning company, you can start out by yourself and get experience in every aspect of your business. Later as you grow you can hire 2-3 people to help you in the process.

Marketing options for solar cleaning? Market your business using Contacting EPC contractors, Flyer and brochure marketing to EPC contractors, use social media advertising, Door to Door hangers/brochures to residential locations, etc.

You can also make annual agreements with residents and EPC contractors by offering some discounts.

Selling Solar Products:

If you do not have any knowledge in the solar industry and you don’t want to invest much in the business then the best option will be selling solar products in the market as a retailer.

There are lots of solar products which are already in the market or going to be launched very soon with the thriving demand for solar products.

Products like solar pumps, solar attic fans, solar lights, solar PV, solar thermal systems, even solar chargers, and many other solar products are there which you can sell in the retail market.

Get a Shop and Establishment registration, rent a small shop & get GST registration done.

You will find many solar product dealers in your area, who can supply the variety of solar products as per the requirement in your area.

I hope this guide to the solar business will help you get started. If you have any additional suggestions, feel free to mention them in the comments section below.

  • Introduction: Solar Panel Manufacturing

Solar energy is the ultimate and free source of clean energy on the planet Earth which has been in existence since the very beginning of the universe.

However, due to technical barriers, we were not able to harvest the maximum of the solar energy for our needs. But with the advancement of the technology we have now discovered multiple channels to harvest the solar energy for our own use.

As per the renewable capacity statistics 2021, a total of 713,970 Megawatt of solar energy was produced globally and with every proceeding year, new solar projects are being added on a large scale to minimize the dependencies of carbon fuels for energy production.

India is turning out to be a new hub for the solar power companies to establish new plants in the northern regions of India.

Read Our Blog: Recycling Plant

Currently India has a capacity of producing 40,000 MW of solar energy annually and looking at the scope, these figures will soon turn into 6 digits by 2025.

The idea of sustainable development is encouraging each individual to look for an alternative source of clean energy. Also, the government of India is now more focused on encouraging these energy sources and has already launched multiple schemes.

Currently, the Indian market has grown rapidly posting a CAGR of 17.33% between FY16-20.

And the country is targeting to install solar plants of 280 GW capacity by the year 2030.

Recently the Government of India has increased the import taxes on solar panels by 30 % in order to promote local manufacturers to enter and rule the market. The government of India has taken several initiatives with the ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE) in drafting new plans and putting out new tenders, which in turn is expected to drive the Indian manufacturer during the forecast period.

What is a PV Module?

A solar cell panel, solar electric panel, photo-voltaic (PV) module or just solar panel is an assembly of photovoltaic cells mounted in a framework for installation. Solar panels use sunlight as a source of energy to generate direct current electricity. A collection of PV modules is called a PV panel, and a system of PV panels is called an array. Arrays of a photovoltaic system supply solar electricity to electrical equipment., A solar cell panel, solar electric panel, photo-voltaic (PV) module or just solar panel is an assembly of photovoltaic cells mounted in a framework for installation. Solar panels use sunlight as a source of energy to generate direct current electricity. A collection of PV modules is called a PV panel, and a system of PV panels is called an array. Arrays of a photovoltaic system supply solar electricity to electrical equipment.

The basic raw material of a solar panel is pure silicon. However, the outer frame enclosing an array of solar cells in each solar panel is made of glass. The glass must be highly transparent to allow the sunlight to penetrate the frame. Moreover, for maintenance and safety purposes, the glass used in the panels should not be brittle.

Solar panels constitute two forms of silicon - crystalline and amorphous. Crystalline silicon cut and made into disks of 1 cm thickness is polished to act as a material for absorbing light. Solar panels also employ cooling materials to prevent damages caused by overheating. On the other hand, panels made of amorphous silicon can be continuously rolled and made into extremely thin silicon chips that can absorb different parts of the solar spectrum. Amorphous silicon is also less susceptible to damage during installation and transportation when compared to the crystalline form.

  • To start with, very pure semiconductor-grade polysilicon is obtained from quartz in an electric arc furnace. With the application of carbon arc, molten polysilicon and carbon dioxide are obtained.
  • The polysilicon thus obtained is heated to melting temperature and then added with traces of boron for forming a P-type semiconductor material.
  • An ingot or silicon block is formed by either using a seed crystal extracted from the molten polysilicon or by casting the molten polysilicon in a block.
  • The ingots are sliced using wire saws to obtain separate wafers, which are then subjected to a surface etching process. Solar cells usually employ hexagonal or rectangular wafers as they can be perfectly fitted together.
  • The wafers are introduced in to a phosphorus diffusion furnace once they are cleaned to form a thin N-type semiconductor layer that covers the outer surface of the cell.
  • The top part of the cell is then applied with an anti-reflective coating for reducing the loss of sunlight and provided with thin electrical contacts for connecting a solar cell to another and to a receiver.
  • The back surface of each cell is deposited with an aluminized conductive material by displacing the diffused phosphorus layer in order to restore the P-type properties of the surface.
  • Each cell thus formed is then tested, sorted depending on the current output and connected to other cells to form a solar panel.

The PV modules in India are regulated by the Bureau of Indian Standard and Ministry of new and renewable sources of energy under the compulsory registration scheme launched in 2013.

Under the said scheme the PV module needs to undergo testing from an NABL testing lab under the designated standard. The product must clear all the testing parameters, post which only the manufacturer can sell its product in the Indian market.

This registration scheme is mandatory for foreign manufacturers and Indian manufacturers to undergo the registration. Also, they must comply with all the terms and conditions of the license in order to continue business in India.

The said scheme was designed for the end consumer safety and it ensures that the quality products reach the user.
