Hate people copy other people's style. My strengths is to draw and use my imagination my weakness to seam and handicraft.

Why I Want To Study Fashion

Fashion is a miraculous world of fantasy and hard work that I would be thrilled to enter, and the studies at the XXX could open the gate to this exciting world for me.

I opted for fashion design as a major as I have always been attracted by the power of transformation that trendy clothing gives a person. I enjoyed inventing clothing for my dolls when I was a child, and enjoyed seeing the same old plaything take on a different look each time I gave her different apparel. I also loved to see my mom and aunts put on trendy things and turn into fabulous-looking princesses.

When going to in high school, I most of all enjoyed drawing and painting. I love using a rich palette of colors in my works. My skills were often awarded with prizes in high school. Among the various courses we were offered at school, my favorite ones were the two fashion classes I took in one of my school years. I scored well in both of them. Overall, I used to be a good student, and the school administration always placed my picture in the lobby of the school.

I have a multi-cultural background that combines very different experiences. I first came to the US when I was three years old. Later I went back to China when I was in junior high school. Thus I combine two different backgrounds, supported by the knowledge of the two languages: English and Chinese.

In China, I kept pursuing a career in fashion that is my priority dream and aspiration. I had a course in drawing. In the US I added to my experience working in a fabric company in Manhattan. This was a great experience too, sharing the vibrant life of the New York City fashion world.

My dream is to become a professional fashion designer and be able to say a new world in apparel making. At the moment I enjoy designing my own clothing, as it gives me the possibility to stand out from the crowd and differ in style from my peers. I am bored by the people who would always wear the same style and fashion and enjoy adding fresh ideas to my wardrobe.

I believe in my ability to be creative and to produce the garments that will be unique in their own style and trend and will grab the attention of the most famous designers in the world. A good imagination is my personal strength, and the one that will lay the foundation for my professional expertise. In my view, the value of the designer's works lies in their originality, their difference from others. I dislike seeing the works of the artists who merely copycat other people's styles.

On the other hand, my weakness is the lack of skills in seaming and remote idea of handicraft, but I believe these drawbacks can be overcome by hard work that I am ready to put in as I am really determined to pursuing a career path in fashion.

I am following what the New York designers are working on now, my favorite being Honk Kong-born artist Vivienne Tam. She has received quite a multicultural upbringing as she was born in Canton, brought up in Hong Kong, and eventually settled in New York. She has made a name in the fashion world by being innovative, and having her own distinctive style. Vivienne first became famous with her signature collection of Eastern inspired clothing with a modern edge on the New York stage in 1994. After that, East-meets-West style became her trademark and distinctive feature. Pieces of her now classic Buddha collection of 1997 ultimately became part of the permanent archives of the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Like Vivienne Tam, I want to single myself out from the rest of the designers, and establish my own style that will win acclaim in the fashion world.

Sample Personal Statement Design and Textile

Shivers run down my spine as I am transported back to the darkest day of my life. As a toddler, I witnessed something so disquieting that I froze at that moment. I witnessed something so raw that, ever since, my impressionable mind has been in a frenzy – unable to recover from it. Then, I saw my mother trying to set herself on fire.

Standing helplessly in one corner, I was caught in a daze. Seeing your mother trying to give up on life like that is beyond disturbing. No one can ever understand where I come from as they have not walked my path.

However, the same past has transformed me into the strong individual I am today. Since that day, I decided I could not be at the mercy of a ruthless man, for my mother was my father. This epiphany gave me a goal. To become an independent woman and survive without being dependent on anyone.

That night something magical happened. Our guardian angel helped my mother reconsider her weak choice. We escaped the moment and moved back to my maternal grandparent’s house, leaving behind my father. I have never met him since.

Being a single parent, my mother struggled to make a living for her three infant children. She fought with all her might to provide us with every possible comfort. She taught us that, as do winters, springs find their way. Her aspiration has always been to make a better life for us.

Despite all the dark empty holes in her life, she taught me to make drawings and fill them with beautiful colors. And in art, I have found my escape. I draw my mind. The sun comes up every morning. Every day is a new beginning to a life full of different shades of hue. It’s charismatic. If you focus on the bright things, the dark emptiness disappears, the roots start to grow, and little buds of happiness form.

That’s why even in conversations, my mind wanders to what I want to draw next and how to fill it with colors. I am just optimistic that life will lead me to great heights. These are the things I have learned from being raised by a strong mother. A strong mother gives you the confidence to be who you want. You do what you want and aren’t afraid of expressing yourself.

In my case, I draw and construct designs. My mother has moved mountains, and so will I. Being a hardworking lady, my mother wasn’t always by my side. She worked tirelessly, so I used to spend most of my time with my grandfather. He, too, was a man of great wisdom. Unfortunately, by the age of 9, I lost him. I was broken and shattered. That was the moment I froze again. I had spent most of my childhood with him. He always encouraged me to grow and pursue my dreams to every possible limit. My life experiences represent my turmoil, resilience, and strength to conquer. I aspire to change my vision into reality now.

My philosophy behind Fashion and Textile design is more than designing clothes. The design never remains the same; it changes with the environment, just like life changes every minute. Some like to call it a fad. For me, every single design is a story to be found, heard, and felt. I speak through lines, designs, and colors. I channel my art into designs and fashion silhouettes. Fashion is beauty, enthrallment, and secrecy. Fashion is my passion. Hence, my work is a depiction of myself.

I have done my undergrad in Textile and Clothing. The degree comprised fashion illustrations inspired by drapery and designs that evoke emotions. The way it induces diverse sentiments is beautiful. I want to communicate different emotions to people and untangle the anonymity of how clothing can modify the environment.

My true passion for fashion flourished while doing my thesis in the final year of my undergrad. I developed color-therapeutic Adaptive Clothing for children suffering from cerebral palsy because I feel that color, design, and lines have the power to heal.

Currently, I’m working as an assistant fashion designer at Zara. At work, one of my responsibilities is to visualize ideas and transform them into tangible women’s fashion apparel. In addition, I develop fashion silhouettes for different fabrications and technical specifications of fashion cutlines using photoshop. Teamwork has helped me elicit sources of inspiration for seasonal range collections. This experience has made me confident and helped me contribute to a world where colors and designs speak of people’s minds. It’s an inspiring experience to know that a part of me lives in their stories.

This might be a chance for me to identify my local culture on an international platform. This will bring uniqueness and diversity to the entrepreneurial world of my country, where chauvinists oppress women. Being a strong woman, my mother has been an asset to me; it’s time for me to become an asset to other women.

I seek a long-term career where I can articulate my artistic talent and passion for fashion and open my mind by exploring the skills I could never do in any other field. My experience was unforgettable, and that surely made me what I’m today. I have armored myself in it. If I get this chance, I can gain a career that I’ll love for the rest of my life without regret.

Free Fashion Essay Examples & Topics

The way a person presents says a lot about their character. And everyone has their style. However, not everyone is fashionable. Fashion is the popular and prevailing way of dressing, which often follows particular trends in a given era. Unlike style, it is characterized by change. Fashion follows cycles and constantly evolves together with society.

What is fashion, if not a form of art? Of course, it is a tool and a statement. But very often, fashion trends are reflective of their time. They are influenced by real-life events, politics, values, and socioeconomic changes. Fashion culture reveals human culture, and this is why it is so important.

If you require help writing a fashion essay, you’ve come to the right place. Our experts have prepared tips and tricks that will be useful in your academic paper. Below, you will also find fashion essay examples and topics.

Structure-wise, a fashion essay is no different from any other academic paper. However, some tips and tricks will make your job significantly easier.

Here are recommendations on how to improve your essay on fashion:

  • Pick an idea that is not too broad. It is best to avoid exploring general topics. A question like “Is it very important nowadays to be in trend?” is not specific enough for you to examine. If your title is too broad, then you won’t be able to include details and specifics. The best topics are always narrowed down to allow room for insight.
  • Check whether you can research your topic. It is good to have a precise idea of what you want to write. However, make sure that you aren’t backing yourself into a corner. If your topic turns out to be too narrow, you will not be able to do any research. This is why it is a good idea to check for credible sources while you are still researching.
  • Form arguments and find examples from the start. It is a good idea to start thinking of your thesis statement once you have settled on a topic. It is a central argument of your paper, and our thesis generator can formulate it for you. Of course, you will need to back it up with evidence. Collect your facts from the very beginning and keep everything organized for efficiency.
  • Outline your fashion essay. Just like always, you will need an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. Jot down topic sentences for each of your body paragraphs before you begin writing. Outlining your essay simplifies the process and makes your task easier.
  • Make sure that the content of your paper fits the topic. Now that you have everything that you need in front of you, it is time to revise. Fashion is a complex subject, and it is easy to get carried away. The most critical thing for you is to stay on topic and not drift off into irrelevant questions.
  • Double-check the instructions before you begin writing. It is a good idea to take another look at the assessment criteria. This will give you a general understanding of what is expected of you. If you feel like you are heading in the wrong direction, double-check your instructions.
  • Use a catchy title to capture the readers’ attention. Since fashion is about expression, your essay has to live up to the standards. This will lend more credibility to your work. Show your passion by spending some extra time on your title to make it stand out.

Reflecting on my childhood, it's clear that my passion for fashion and design, a seed that would eventually lead me towards the Fashion Institute of Technology, was evident from an early age. I spent countless hours in the world of dress-up, effortlessly shifting roles from a princess to a doctor, a chef, or a model. My dolls, the first recipients of my budding design instincts, were never left in their original state. They underwent dramatic makeovers - a snip here, a new outfit there - ultimately culminating in fashion shows to showcase their fresh, innovative looks. At the time, this was more than play; it was the beginning of a lifelong journey in fashion.

'Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned'?

As I got older, fashion began to interest me even more and eventually became an addiction. I would spend hours looking through fashion blogs, and reading through stacks of fashion magazines. By the time I reached my freshman year of high school, I knew the fashion industry was where I wanted to be in life. I was hooked.

Entering high school with the goal of being in the fashion industry one day, I took as many fashion related classes that I could. In 10th grade, I was able to take the first one of these classes, which was an introductory course to fashion. This was one of my favorite classes of the entire year and through this class, I was able to put the skills that I learned to use and participate in a service project for sewing tote bags for the homeless. It was great using fashion to not only help someone in the practical way of them having something to carry their things in, but also in the sense that it would be something new for them, something that could make them feel stylish in what would be a very difficult time in their life. After having such a good experience in this class, I wanted to take another. My junior year of high school, I was able to take Fashion Merchandising. I looked forward to going to this class every day as what we were learning, and the projects that we did were so enjoyable. This is where I realized that I wanted a job specifically in fashion merchandising.

The Fashion Merchandising Management program at Fashion Institude of Technology is a very rigorous program, requiring a variety of different characteristics to succeed in the program, with one of them being a strong work ethic, which I have prepared myself for through my challenging course load that I have had throughout high school. Beginning during my freshman year of high school, I have always taken the most difficult classes that were available to me. My junior year, I was able to take 3 Advanced Placement classes and I am taking 7 Advanced Placement classes currently, during my senior year. One of the Advanced Placement classes that I am taking this year is AP French. I am not only taking this class because of my love of the French language, but also because I believe that it will be a beneficial skill to be able to speak another language in the fashion industry. I hope to be fluent in French by the end of this course and it will help me to be able to understand not only the language, but the culture of a variety of different people and potential employers throughout the fashion industry and to not be disrespectful in expecting them to already know English. I have also been a part of the French Club at my high school, taking on different leadership roles such as Secretary and Vice President. This characteristic of leadership will help me to better succeed in this program, especially when working with a group. I also believe that my years in gymnastics have contributed to my strong work ethic and team work skills. Being a competitive gymnast for 4 years, I would have to train in the gym for hours to perfect the skills I was working on for meets. At meets my teammates and I would support each other, so that we would be able to perform to the best of our abilities. This has shown me that any goal in achievable, as long as you put in the time and effort needed to get there.

To conclude the essay, the admission to the Fashion Merchandising Management program will offer me countless opportunities to be prepared for a career in fashion merchandising through networking with industry executives, the invaluable skills that I will learn about the industry, and the amazing study abroad opportunities. Eventually, I dream of being able to be a top executive in the fashion merchandising field, and being a part of this program at FIT is a crucial step in this process.

Admission Fashion Designer Essay Sample

Essay on fashion design and what does it mean to be a designer.

I honestly wanted to be a model when I was small. First, it was fashionable; second, I sincerely believed it would contribute to my appearance. Fortunately, I was not tall enough, and in order to ease my disappointment, my mother advised me to watch the movie “Pretty Woman”. I became totally fascinated. However, it was not due to the leading actors, but to the great variety of models for dresses, not to say anything about bonnets and hats, shoes, and handbags. Another bout of excitement overwhelmed me when I got to know that the nearest college offered evening courses on the history of fashion. Since that time my main idea was to be able one day to walk along the catwalk together with Donna Karan or Carolina Herrera.

I strongly believe that all people are beautiful. But more often we find ourselves in situations when we do not know how to shape our beauty. So, the study of fashion, its history, its present modernizing trends, and its possible revolutionary future is one of the ways to help people feel and look beautiful. Many people think that fashion designers are just artists who create pictures of some nice, but very often impractical and expensive clothes. However, the subject matter of the profession is to look inside the person and even a generation and reveal the hidden potential with the help of attiring people in the best possible way.

I truly believe that being a fashion designer is not only about earning a lot of money, but predominantly about discovering beauty in everybody and everything and bringing it into the spotlight to marvel and enlarge.

25 Inspiring College Essay Topic Ideas

June 24, 2024

If you’ve ever wondered what other people write about in their college application essays, you’re not alone. Just as reading a range of novels can expose you to unique takes on similar themes, seeing others’ college essay topic ideas can open you up to new possibilities, spark creativity, and enhance your brainstorming process. Since we read hundreds of essays per year, we wanted to round up a collection of past topics from actual students to inspire your essay-writing endeavors. Moreover, we’ve paired those topics with targeted brainstorming questions that will set you off on your own path to success. Ready? Let’s dive in.

How do I find the right college essay topic ideas?

Like a well-hidden geocache , the right college essay topic ideas can only be uncovered with some effort. In general, the right college essay topic:

  • is interesting and/or exciting to you
  • demonstrates a quality, value, or perspective that can’t be found elsewhere on your application

While deciding, focus on asking yourself the right types of questions. For example, let’s say you’re down to two topics: a moral/ethical dilemma you recently faced, or the nonprofit you started last year. In this scenario, most students may assume they *should* write about the nonprofit–after all, it’s the more “impressive” of the two, right?

However, let’s divorce ourselves from “should.” Instead, ask yourself: if I write this essay, what will admissions officers learn about me that they can’t learn about elsewhere? Through starting this nonprofit, what have I learned about myself? Can I show my reader what I value, or how I handle problems? Or will I basically be re-hashing what is already in my activities list or honors section ?

Alternatively, the ethical/moral dilemma you recently faced completely threw you for a loop. It made you rethink a closely held belief and forced you to confront how you handle challenging situations.

Ask yourself: what will admissions officers learn about me that they can’t learn about elsewhere? What have I learned about myself? Can I handle this subject tactfully—without complaining, blaming others, or coming to a conclusion that feels forced/too neat? Can I be vulnerable?

Be honest with yourself, and a clear winner will emerge.

How do I find “unique” college essay topic ideas?

Every year, our students wonder how to ensure that their essay stands out, often asking us questions along these lines:

How do I make sure that my essay topic is different from everyone else’s?

If I write about my sports injury, will it sound like every other sports essay?

If I write about my parent’s illness, will that be just another sob story?

We get it—it’s natural and normal to be curious about what admissions officers want to hear, or wonder whether particular college essay topic ideas will strengthen your application more than others. While there is some strategy involved with topic selection, the way you write about and reflect on any given topic is usually much more important than the topic itself.

To that end, college essay topics/themes we see on a regular basis include:

  • Coming-of-age, most often a realization that changed their perspective or inspired personal growth
  • A challenging situation or moral dilemma
  • A passion or intellectual curiosity
  • A meaningful aspect of their family/identity/cultural background
  • An important community

We see these topics frequently because they are universal to the teenage experience. This does not make them bad or mean you should avoid them. On the contrary, it makes them classic, timeless, and relatable (remember, you’re trying to create a personal connection with your reader!).

Accordingly, use the above college essay topics/themes as a way to start collecting ideas for your own personal statement, and know you are in very good company if you write an essay on one of them.

Bottom line: you make a college essay topic “unique” by writing about yourself, in your own style and voice, with plenty of detail and specifics. You share what you learned and how you grew. That’s it!

Where can I find examples of college essay topic ideas?

Sometimes, you just need a list of examples. Let’s go back to our geocaching reference above. What the heck is a geocache, anyway? What will you find inside one? Do people use certain types of containers? Perusing a few examples will help you build an idea of what to expect when you go exploring. Okay, I could be looking for anything from Tupperware containers to film canisters…or fake rocks…what?!

Accordingly, in providing you with this list of college essay topic ideas, we want to validate and inspire you. These are real college essay topics developed by real college applicants, so it’s very likely you can connect or identify with at least a few of them. If a topic resonates with or sounds interesting to you, try writing down some thoughts on the associated brainstorming question and see where it takes you.
