How to Write a Last Minute Essay
âWhat If I Donât Have Anything Interesting to Write About in My College Essay?
8 Tips for Overcoming Writerâs Blockâ
![write an essay on three hours write an essay on three hours](https://blog.collegevine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/per.png)
Ooops! You waited until the very last minute to begin the college application process, and itâs probably stressing you out. But never fear â CollegeVine is here to make sure that your procrastination impacts your essay as minimally as possible.
Weâve included a guide for the 30-day essay, the 15-day essay, and the 3-day essay. If you have multiple essays to write in a short time, you can follow the appropriate guide for multiple prompts simultaneously, or offset it by a few days.
The 30-Day Essay
At this point, you want to focus on ideas. You have the freedom to spend a few days figuring out which direction your essay is going to take, so take your time to think about what you want to convey in your essay. Find four to five topics to begin withâyou can ask your parents, friends, and teachers about what they find interesting about you in order to speed this process up. Try to choose anecdotes from your life that, in retrospect, you learned from, and these stories will inform your topic. Even the shortest, most insignificant moment can make a great essay if it shaped you in some way. If you are writing a âwhy this schoolâ essay, make a list of reasons why you are applying. Do appropriate research to find strong reasons that show your genuine interest in the school.Â
Now that you have a few potential topics, think about how each one would respond to the prompt. Spend 15 minutes outlining each one, using your prompt to guide the outline. In essays that ask you to tell a story, a good topic should write itself and finding a strong essay idea will nearly always be more productive than forcing a story to respond to the prompt. For âwhy this schoolâ essays, focus on the structure and connection between your reasons. Giving this step the necessary hours now will pay off later. Narrow your list of potential topics to your top one to three choices.
Now itâs time to put pen to paper. If youâre having a hard time, try writing in different environmentsâcoffee shops, your room, or a library, for exampleâand alternate between topics, and remember that at least at this stage, more words is better than fewer; there will be a step to polish your writing later.Â
By day 14, you should have written one rough essay for every âtop choiceâ topic you decided on during day 5. This means that you should now have anywhere between one to three potential essays for a single prompt.
If you do have more than one essay written, it is now time to choose a single essay. Out of the two or three essays you have written in the past couple days, there is probably one that speaks to you more than the rest. If youâre having a hard time, think about which of the topics youâd like to spend another two weeks with, and try to figure out which one says the most about you. Essays with twice the number of words allowed or more should be ruled out; the anecdote is probably too long, or the topic requires too much detail to be effective.
Break days! Distance is important when writing. Take a break from your essays so that you can continue to edit with a fresh mind. These are great days to give your essay to other people to editâschool faculty members who know you well, a coach/music teacher, your parents, and one or two friends. If you are over the word limit, ask specifically for these editors to help you cut down the essay.
Reading your essay with a fresh mind should help you catch big, structural edits. Your first round of edits should involve content edits; youâre looking for what the essay really says about you as a person, and whether that was what you were trying to get across. How does the sentence flow? Does the essay move itself?
Break day! Get some more distance from your writing.
At this point, you might have received some edits back from the people you handed your essay to. Go through each of the edits and decide which suggestions you plan to take, and which seem to alter your personal voice or which donât match the essay stylistically. Try to stay objective as you review these editsâsome of them will be detrimental. If you canât see why the change was made, itâs probably best to ignore it. If multiple people give you the same feedback, however, you may want to give it some thought.
Implement the edits that you liked. Then read through the essay again and make sure that there are no structural edits or content edits that still need to happen.
These days are the middle stage of your editing process. Youâre looking for words that donât fit the style of the essay, or which could be improved, as well as sentence flow problems. Are all your sentences the same length? Is one paragraph not as well written as the rest of the essay? This should also be the time that you cut words. If you are still more than 70 words over, try to cut full sentences. Otherwise, start by cutting unnecessary phrases and words.
Start doing smaller grammatical edits. A great way to catch edits is to record yourself reading your essay aloud and then listening to the recording. As you go through this process, highlight, mark, and comment on your essay. Afterwards, go through and use your notes to fix word flow, word choice, and grammatical mistakes.
Break day! Itâs close to the deadline, we know. Take a break anyway â you need and deserve it.
Last minute edits! Spend some quality time with your essay by just reading it every few hours. Try to catch any small mistakes or random sentence flow problems. (If you suddenly realize that you hate your essay, reference the 3-Day Essay below. Be sure that you arenât being hyper-critical, thoughâyou may just hate the essay because youâve spent so much time on it).
Congratulations! Your essay is done! Itâs time for you to catch a break.Â
The 15-Day Essay
Spend a few hours working on a list of ideas that could become potential essays. Choose one and make an outline.
Write your essay!
Ask a few people who you think would give constructive comments to read your essayâ teachers, parents, and friends. Spend some time doing content and structure edits. Figure out what you want the essay to convey about your personality, and determine whether your essay actually gets this across.
Do some structural editing. Pay attention to sentence flow, the length of paragraphs, overall organization. If your essay is too long, try to cut down on unnecessary information. Pay close attention to the way that you have structured paragraphs and make sure each one makes sense.
Take a break!
Synthesize the comments you received on your essay. Decide which suggestions you want to use and which ones you donât. If you canât figure out why a particular suggestion was made, ask the person who gave it. After youâve gone through all the feedback, edit your essay accordingly.
Cut your essay down to the word limit â ask yourself which anecdotes, details, and adjectives are truly necessary. If youâre having trouble, reference the editors that you spoke to previously.
Work on grammatical and other small edits. Look for minor things that need to be corrected, such as punctuation and word choice. This process requires a few dedicated hours. Aim to really spend some time polishing your language. Reading your essay aloud can be a productive way to accomplish this.
Take a break from your essay!
Spend the whole day with your essay. Every few hours, do a reread and see if you can catch any small last minute edits. Donât try to change anything majorâyou donât have time!
Submit the essay and take a good nap. Youâve finished!Â
The 3-Day Essay
Donât panic. This is doable, but itâll be a busy few days. Spend the morning coming up with ideas for your essay. Choose one, and use the afternoon to write it. Email this draft to teachers, and show it to your parents. Then, take a few hours off, and later at night, read it through to edit for content. Does the essay say what you intended it to?
Check your email throughout the day. When you get edits back, start incorporating those into the essay. Be picky about which ones you choose to include because you donât want to take your own voice out of the essay. Spend the day doing structural edits. Every hour, take a thirty minute break from editing. By the end of the day, you should have an essay that fits within the word limit and also has a strong flow. The organization should be good, and you should be able to see how the essay builds upon itself.
DO NOT OPEN EDITS. If any of your readers have replied to your email, donât open them at all. At this point, the extra edits will just freak you out, and you donât have time to do major fixes. The name of the game today is small edits; look for grammar, word changes, and minor sentence structure changes. When youâre finally done, take a breath; you can finally relax.Â
The 1-Day EssayÂ
Of course, writing a college essay the day before itâs due is far from ideal, but we know there are probably some of you out there who will find yourself in this situation. Donât worry, it is not hopeless. Instead of trying to fit a step-by-step plan into a tight timespan, weâve compiled some general tips to help you churn out that essay in one day.Â
Choose your prompts strategically.
If you already know what youâre going to write about, great! Move on to the next tip. If not, see if you might have already written an essay to any of the available prompts. Especially if the prompts are open-ended, you may have already addressed a potential topic in previous school papers. Look through your files to see if you have any essays that you might be able to recycle. The key here is recycle : it goes without saying that you shouldnât use a previously-written essay word for word for your college submission. You should still take time to tailor it to the prompt and make sure that it conveys your message clearly, whether itâs illustrating your strengths or expressing why you wish to attend that particular college.Â
Make an outline.Â
Yes, you may feel that you donât have time for extensive planning, and that you should just jump in and get everything on paper. Try to rein in this urge and take one hour to make a brief outline, spelling out your âthesisâ and all the points you want to address. This will help keep your thoughts in order as you write, especially in such a time-constricted context.Â
Get that distance, re-read, and edit.Â
Itâs always tempting to just click submit once youâre done with a project you worked long and hard on, to feel that relief when you know itâs done. However, especially given the rushed nature of a last-minute essay like this, the revision and editing process is crucial, even if itâll be minimal. Blatant errors will reflect poorly in your application!Â
So when youâre done writing, set it aside for a few hours. Then, reread it, and make any necessary correctionsâgrammar mistakes, typos, sentence flow. When youâre sure it sounds they way you want it to, then you can submit.Â
Wrapping it Up
Procrastinating on your college essays isnât the best way to go, but it can be saved. If you havenât started applying yet, start your college essays as early as possible! Longer breaks between editing sessions will allow you to get the distance necessary to be objective, and to produce the best quality essay you can.

To brainstorm your topic fast, start by doing the following exercises.
Questions | Example brainstorm |
---|---|
Top 5 things I want colleges to know about me | |
My top 5 core identities | |
related to my personality and character | |
3 things that make me different from other applicants | |
5 meaningful life moments from the past 3â4 years | |
If you already have a prompt, brainstorm 3â5 stories that relate to your prompt. | prompt #1: Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story. |
Choose the stories that have the most compelling value or narrative. Make sure these stories are:
- Meaningful to you
- Specific (not a broad summary of your life)
- Unique to you (another student couldnât replicate it)
If you have a single story that showcases how you overcame a challenge or chronicles your personal growth over time, you should use a narrative structure . This type of essay tells a story, usually in chronological order. If you have very limited time, this structure is easier.
If thereâs a common theme among several of your stories, you could use a montage structure , which strings together several stories (for example, to showcase different aspects of your identity). If you have more than a few hours to work on your essay, you may want to try out this structure.
To make your essay stand out , write your story in a way that no other student can replicate. As you write, keep these tips in mind:
- Zoom in on specific moments rather than summarizing a long period of time.
- Be vulnerable and share your honest feelings and thoughts.
- Use your authentic voice and an appropriate tone .
- Keep the focus on you, not another person.
- Describe sensory details to create vivid scenes.
Make sure to build in enough time to revise your essay . Ideally, you should aim for three rounds of revision to check for content, clarity, and grammar.
If you donât have time to fix everything, focus on making sure your writing is clear and grammatically correct. You can do this with the help of a grammar checker and paraphrasing tool . If you want to check your entire document at once, you can use an essay checker .
In your first reading, focus on content:
- Does it answer the prompt?
- Does it focus on me, not someone else?
- Does it have a clear and well-structured narrative?
- Do my stories âshow, not tellâ?
In your second reading, focus on clarity and flow:
- Is my essay easy to read?
- Are my word choice and tone conversational but respectful?
- Do I have a good mixture of complex and simple sentence structures?
In your third reading, focus on grammar and punctuation:
- Is my writing grammatically correct?
- If I bend language rules, is it clear that itâs intentional and not a mistake?

Sometimes, you need to be able to write a good essay in a short amount of time for a timed exam, such as the Advanced Placement exams in high school. At other times, you might find yourself in the uncomfortable situation of having to write an essay fast because you procrastinated or let it sneak up on you. Although an essay written at the last minute will almost never be as good as an essay you spent more time on, putting together a decent essay quickly is still feasible. With a little planning and a lot of hard work, you can write an essay thatâs good (or good enough!) in just a short time.
Doing the Prep Work for Your Essay
![write an essay on three hours Step 1 Develop a plan.](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/a/a0/Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-1-Version-2.jpg/v4-460px-Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-1-Version-2.jpg)
- Be honest about your strengths and weaknesses when devising your plan. [1] X Research source For example, if you are a good researcher but not great at editing, spend less time on the research section in favor of spending more time on the revising section.
- Make sure to schedule breaks for yourself to refresh your brain and recharge yourself.
- An example of a plan for a one-day essay writing project might look like this:
- 8:00 â 9:30 â Consider an essay question and argument for the topic.
- 9:30 â 9:45 â Take a short break.
- 10:00 â 12:00 â Conduct research.
- 12:00 â 13:00 â Outline the essay.
- 13:00 â 14:00 â Take a lunch break.
- 14:00 â 19:00 â Write your essay.
- 19:00 â 20:00 â Take a dinner break.
- 20:00 â 22:30 â Revise and copy edit your essay.
- 22:30 â 23:00 â Print and prepare your essay submission. [2] X Research source
![write an essay on three hours Step 2 Consider the essay question.](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/0/0a/Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-2-Version-2.jpg/v4-460px-Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-2-Version-2.jpg)
- Make sure you understand what the question is asking for! If you provide a summary when the essay prompt asked you to âanalyze,â youâre unlikely to do very well.
- If you donât have an essay topic, choose a subject that interests you and consider the essay question afterward. You are more likely to write a good essay on a topic that youâre interested in.
![write an essay on three hours Step 3 Develop your argument or thesis statement.](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/3/34/Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-3-Version-2.jpg/v4-460px-Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-3-Version-2.jpg)
- If you donât have much experience with your topic, it might be difficult to develop an argument. You can still consider your argument and then use your research to support or refute the claims you want to make.
- A good exercise to help you quickly figure out your essay question and argument is to write âI am studying (choose a topic) because I want to know (what do you want to know) in order to show (this is where your argument goes).â
- For example, âI am studying the medieval witch trials because I want to know how lawyers employed evidence in their cases in order to show that the trial process influenced modern medical techniques and legal practices.â
- Consider counter-arguments in order to strengthen your essay.
![write an essay on three hours Step 4 Research your essay topic.](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/0/08/Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-4-Version-2.jpg/v4-460px-Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-4-Version-2.jpg)
- Since you donât have a lot of time to write, focus on one or two places where you can do research. For example, the library and internet offer many different options for sources. [5] X Research source
- Just make sure that you use reliable sources, such as peer-reviewed journals, government and university websites, and newspapers and magazines written by professionals. Donât use personal blogs, obviously biased sources, or sources that donât have professional credentials.
- You can draw upon information you know to speed up the research process. Simply find a (reliable!) source to support it and include it in your sources. [6] X Research source
- Doing preliminary research online can point you to sources in a library such as books and journal articles. It can also point you in the direction of web sources including newspaper article archives or other research on your topic.
- If you're reading books, "gut" the book to get through it quickly and move on to other sources. To "gut" a book, skim the introduction and conclusion to find the main arguments, and then pick a few details from the body of the book to use as evidence. [7] X Research source
- Take notes on your research sources. These will show that youâve legitimately researched the topic while giving credit to the person who forwarded the idea. [8] X Research source This is especially important if you plan to use direct quotes and will also help you add footnotes and bibliographic information to your essay without having to look them up in the sources.
![write an essay on three hours Step 5 Write an outline of your essay.](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/c/c8/Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-5-Version-2.jpg/v4-460px-Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-5-Version-2.jpg)
- Structure your outline as you will your essay, with an introduction, a body, and a conclusion.
- The more detail you put into your outline, the easier and more quickly you can write the essay. For example, instead of just writing a basic paragraph about the body, flesh it out into bullet points or sentences that presents argument and supporting evidence. [10] X Research source
Writing an Untimed Essay
![write an essay on three hours Step 1 Set a fixed amount of time to write.](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/8/8d/Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-6.jpg/v4-460px-Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-6.jpg)
- Nothing will keep you from finishing an essay on time like goofing off online or ending up watching eight straight hours of Cartoon Network. Turn the TV off, switch your phone to silent, and exit out of Facebook and other social media/chat sites.
- Make sure you have all your material nearby when you start to write. Getting up to fetch a book or a piece of paper or a snack will eat into your precious time.
![write an essay on three hours Step 2 Write a catchy...](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/2/20/Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-7.jpg/v4-460px-Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-7.jpg)
- The most important part of your introduction is your argument or thesis statement. This tells the reader the point your trying to make in the essay. [13] X Research source
- Write a âhookâ that will grab the readerâs attention to start, then introduce the argument with a few relevant facts woven into the narrative. End by stating how you will demonstrate your points. [14] X Research source
- An example of a hook could be, âPeople say Napoleon had a complex because of his size, but he was actually an average height for the time in which he lived.â
- It's sometimes helpful to write the introduction after you have written the body so you know how to introduce the topic and your arguments best. [15] X Research source
- A good rule of thumb is to not have the introduction be more the 10% of your essay. Thus, for a five page essay, you shouldnât write more than one paragraph. [16] X Research source
![write an essay on three hours Step 3 Write the body of the essay.](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/d/de/Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-8.jpg/v4-460px-Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-8.jpg)
- Pick two to three main points to help make your argument or thesis statement. Any fewer and you wonât have enough evidence for your argument and any more may make you not explore each point thoroughly enough. [18] X Research source
- Keep your evidence to support the main points concise. Going off on explanatory tangents will cost you precious time.
- Support your main points with the evidence compiled during your research. Make sure to explain how the evidence supports your claims! [19] X Research source
- If havenât reached your word limit, pick a main point and conduct more research on it to expand on your point. [20] X Research source
![write an essay on three hours Step 4 Write as clearly as possible.](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/d/d3/Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-9.jpg/v4-460px-Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-9.jpg)
- Avoid "fat" language when you write. Text that includes long prepositional phrases, passive verbs, and paragraphs that don't further your argument waste time that you could spend writing or revising your essay.
![write an essay on three hours Step 5 Allow yourself to âfree-writeâ to optimize your time.](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/5/5a/Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-10.jpg/v4-460px-Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-10.jpg)
- Free-writing can also help you overcome writerâs block that results from not knowing how to say something. If youâre struggling with getting the wording of an idea just right, write it as well as you can and come back to it later.
![write an essay on three hours Step 6 Write the essay conclusion.](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/3/38/Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-11.jpg/v4-460px-Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-11.jpg)
- The essay conclusion should also be relatively short. Aim for the conclusion to be 5-10% of your essayâs total length.
- Aim to do more in your conclusion than just restate your thesis and the evidence you used. You could acknowledge the limitations of your argument, suggest a direction for future research, or expand the relevance of your topic to a wider field.
- Just as you drew in reader with good introduction, end your conclusion with a sentence that make a lasting impression on your reader. [24] X Research source
![write an essay on three hours Step 7 Revise and proofread your essay.](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/5/58/Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-12.jpg/v4-460px-Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-12.jpg)
- Re-read the entire essay. Make sure that you are still arguing the same thing at the end of the essay that you are at the beginning. If not, go back and adjust your thesis.
- Make sure that your paragraphs build on one another and donât feel haphazard. You can use transitions and strong topic sentences to help you draw connections between your paragraphs.
- Spelling and grammar are the easiest mistakes to revise, but they cost you a lot of reader goodwill if you donât fix them. [25] X Research source
Writing a Timed Essay
![write an essay on three hours Step 1 Plan your work.](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/e/e9/Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-13.jpg/v4-460px-Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-13.jpg)
- Read the prompt carefully! If the question asks you to take a position, take one. If it asks you to evaluate the events that led to the downfall of Rome, donât just give a summary of Roman history. [26] X Research source
- Jot down an idea map. You probably wonât have time to make a formal outline. However, having an idea of the main points that you want to touch on and how they relate will help you structure the essay. If you canât figure out how to connect your main points, thatâs a sign you need to think a little bit more before you start writing.
- Figure out your argument. Once youâve noted down some main points, figure out what you want to say about them. Even timed essays need a unified argument or thesis.
![write an essay on three hours Step 2 Time your writing strategically.](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/2/2b/Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-14.jpg/v4-460px-Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-14.jpg)
- For example, you wouldnât want to spend the same amount of time and effort on a 3-paragraph essay question worth 20% as you would a 2-page essay question worth 60%.
- If you see a question that you feel will be more difficult for you, it could be a good idea to tackle it first. This will get the hard stuff out of the way while youâre still fresh.
![write an essay on three hours Step 3 Cut the fluff.](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/d/dd/Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-15.jpg/v4-460px-Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-15.jpg)
- If you notice that your introductory paragraph starts with something broad or hugely general, such as âThroughout the history of time, humans have been fascinated by science,â cut it.
- Donât put anything in a timed essay that doesnât support your point. If you are talking about the importance of religious belief in modern society, donât dilute your point by also referencing socialism, Hollywood, and banana farming.
![write an essay on three hours Step 4 Explain connections between evidence and claims.](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/8/81/Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-16.jpg/v4-460px-Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-16.jpg)
- Claim. This is the main argument of the paragraph. It is probably located in your topic sentence.
- Evidence. This is the supporting detail that proves your claim.
- Explanation. This connects the evidence back to your claim and explains why the evidence proves what you say it does.
- If anything in your paragraph doesnât fit one of these three elements, itâs a good sign you donât need it in the paragraph.
![write an essay on three hours Step 5 Leave time to revise.](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/a/a5/Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-17.jpg/v4-460px-Write-a-Good-Essay-in-a-Short-Amount-of-Time-Step-17.jpg)
- Does the essay actually demonstrate and support what your thesis says is the main argument? Itâs not uncommon for ideas to evolve as you write. If this has happened, tweak your thesis accordingly.
- Do the paragraphs flow smoothly from one to the next? Timed essays donât have the same standards that regular essays do, but your reader should still be able to follow your argument in a logical progression without feeling yanked around or lost.
- Do you offer a conclusion that sums up your argument? Donât leave the essay hanging without a conclusion. Even if itâs very brief, a conclusion will help your essay feel complete.

3 Hours to Write an Essay? No Problem!
by Cherie McCord
Do you have an essay that needs to be written in just 3 hours? You may think it’s impossible to write my essay in 3 hours, but with the right plan and resources, it can be done! In this blog post, we will discuss how to plan and execute a successful essay within such a tight timeline. So, if you’re wondering how to write my essay in 3 hours, Â you’ve come to the right place!
Do Some Research
Researching is an essential part of writing any essay. Before you start writing, it is crucial to do some research on the topic you are writing about. This can help you better understand the topic and provide you with more ideas and angles to explore when you write the essay. Research can take many forms, such as reading books and articles, consulting experts, and doing online searches. Research can also help you develop your argument and ensure that your essay is well-informed and persuasive. As you research, take notes so you can easily reference them when you write your essay. Studying for your essay can take time, but you must have a strong understanding of your topic before you start writing.
Create an Outline
Creating an outline is a vital part of any essay writing process. When you have limited time to write an essay, like needing to write my essay in 3 hours, it is essential to come up with a plan that will help you stay organized and work efficiently.
Start by breaking down the assignment into smaller chunks. Make a list of what needs to be done and prioritize your tasks accordingly. Consider how long each step will take and create a feasible timeline.
Next, outline the points and ideas you want to cover in your essay. Think about how you want to introduce the topic and how you want to transition between sections. Write down any relevant facts or quotes you’ll use. An outline will make it easier to write an essay quickly when you’re pressed for time.
Finally, before writing, ensure you understand the assignment and check any rubrics or grading criteria provided. Knowing what is expected of you will help ensure that you stay focused and on track as you work to write your essay in 3 hours.
Write the Essay
Now that you’ve done your research and created an outline, it’s time to write the essay. Start by writing a quick introduction that introduces the essay’s main idea and why it is essential. Then, move into the body of your essay, discussing each point you outlined. Be sure to use evidence from your research to support your points.
When writing your essay, remember to include transitions between ideas so that your writing flows smoothly. Additionally, use strong language and avoid overusing “I” statements. Keep an eye out for grammar and spelling mistakes, as well.
Finally, make sure to leave yourself enough time to write a conclusion that summarises the essay’s main ideas. Ensure the ending leaves the reader with something to think about, such as a question or a call to action.
Following these steps, you’ll have a well-crafted essay written in just three hours! Good luck!
Edit the Essay
Once your essay is written, it’s time to make it perfect! Editing is a vital step in the writing process that should be considered.
First, read through your essay again. This time, look for any spelling or grammar errors. Be sure to check for any typos and make sure all of your words are spelled correctly. Also, look for any awkward phrasing or sentence structures that need to be reworked.
Next, check for consistency. Make sure that the same verb tense is used throughout the essay and the same punctuation and formatting. Additionally, if you’ve included any citations, ensure they are all formatted correctly and that all the information is accurate.
Finally, consider the tone of your essay. Does it match the voice of your topic? Does it flow naturally and read easily? If not, consider adjusting some parts of your essay to ensure that it reads smoothly and engages your reader.
Once you have finished editing your essay, take a break and return to it with fresh eyes. Read it over one more time to ensure you have caught everything. With a bit of time and effort, you will have a fantastic essay ready to submit in three hours!
Writing an essay in three hours can be daunting, but it is certainly possible with the right amount of preparation. Start by researching your topic, creating an outline, and writing your essay. Take the time to edit your work carefully to ensure it is well-written and grammatically correct. With these steps, you can create a theme in three hours that you can be proud of. Good luck!

- How to do a large amount of work in a small amount of time: advice from a veteran of rushing, botching, and bashing it out

1. Get in the zone
I donât know about you, but I have a dozen little rituals I have to perform before I sit down to do a big slog of work. In general, I make it a rule to work in the library or university, because I find working at home, with all its possibilities of making and drinking tea, drifting off to watch TV, or being drawn into long conversations with my housemates, too distracting.

But when Iâm really up against the clock, or even about to start what I know will be an all-nighter, I prefer to be in my room, with easy access to vital things like coffee, food and the shower. (N.B. There is nothing like a shower for waking yourself up in the middle of a miserable work-session. Just donât do what I did one particularly inauspicious Wednesday at 4am: fall asleep sitting down in it with a foot covering the plug, and wake half an hour later under a jet of now-freezing water to find that you have transformed your bathroom into a giant soapy sea).
![write an essay on three hours tidy-desk](https://www.oxford-royale.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/tidy-desk.jpg)
But back to the rituals. Before I do any serious, or seriously rushed, work, Iâve got to do a number of things to âget in the zoneâ. This might sound like elaborate procrastination  — which, in reality, it most definitely is — but if I donât do these little things, I find my concentration is poor, and my mind constantly wanders. First, my room has to be absolutely, books-in-alphabetical-order, spotless — mess is incredibly distracting, and when Iâm working I want to use all the space on my desk. Plus, while youâre tidying you get to watch videos of cats falling over on YouTube. Next, I have to have a strong coffee (which I never drink more than a few sips of before remembering that I hate coffee and it gives me a headache — but it smells nice and is somehow a very reassuring thing to sit next to). Third, classical music doesnât work for me; while Iâm working, and especially at night, I find it keeps the mind sharp to blare out tragic noughties techno music. In particular, the songs of the ultimately unsuccessful Australian band Pendulum played at approximately a million decibels are so unpleasant they keep one constantly skittish with adrenaline, hammering out a thousand questionable words an hour while simultaneously imagining youâre in a warehouse rave. Finally, and most embarrassingly, I have a pair of leggings called my essay leggings that I like to wear while Iâm working. Theyâre very comfy (and holey) and havenât been replaced since my first year of university, because theyâre somehow magically conducive to getting lots done in very little time. Now, the line between preparing oneself for work and procrastination is always thin, and one I continually find myself on the wrong side of. Your rituals might look very different to mine, and perhaps take a little less time. But if you need to do certain things to change your mindset from play to work, Iâd advise you do them.
2. Work out exactly what youâve got to do
Now that youâre sitting comfortably at your desk in your spotless room, work out exactly what youâve got to do — and how long youâve got to do it. Make a list of your tasks in order of priority, what they involve, the date theyâre due in and how long you realistically think theyâll take. Your list might look something like this:
- Write out labels for Art coursework (2 hours, due tomorrow)
- Write self-analysis for Art coursework (3 hours, due tomorrow)
- Finish researching, plan and write History coursework essay (12 hours? 2 days? Due Friday)
- Finish Physics lab report (2 hours, due Thursday)
- Maths problems (3 hours, due tomorrow)
![write an essay on three hours Red clock.](https://www.oxford-royale.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/deadline-clock.jpg)
Now, for some of these tasks it will be absolutely essential that you hand the work in on or before the deadline . For any task that counts towards your coursework , or an exam, youâll usually lose marks if theyâre late — in my university, we would lose 5 marks out of 100 if an essay was handed in one minute after 12pm on the day of the deadline, and a further 10 if it was more than a day late. For these tasks, you absolutely canât mess about — they should sit right at the top of your list of things to do, and be the first thing you get out of the way — and the ones you put most effort into getting right. But, even though it wonât make you very popular with your teachers, sometimes youâve got to accept that you canât do everything youâre expected to in a small amount of time. When Iâve got a big deadline coming up, I jettison everything else: I tell people I canât make other commitments, even if that annoys them, and if I havenât got time, I simply donât do less important pieces of work. On the list above, for example, I might decide that only the pieces of coursework were really important, and that I wasnât going to bother handing in the lab report or the Maths problems. Of course, all this is advice for an emergency situation: if youâve got the time to do everything you need to, then deciding that you wonât is probably not the best strategic move and will mean you have to endure hours of unnecessary telling-off.
![write an essay on three hours Timetable.](https://www.oxford-royale.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/timetable.png)
Make a timetable detailing exactly when youâre going to do each of the things on your list. Make sure you plan enough time for each task rather than being overly optimistic — youâre going to stick to this timetable no matter what . Think about the times of day when you work best, and how tired youâre going to be at various stages of the day/night/week youâre mapping out — the morning of your deadline, for example, when your eyes are itchy with tiredness and your brain about as much use as its equivalent weight in mincemeat, is probably not the best time to be proof-reading or tackling difficult Algebra problems. I study English and consequently write lots of essays, and I find that I can read and take notes at pretty much any time of day, but planning and writing are tasks I can only really do well first thing in the morning. Once youâve made your plan, sit back and take a deep breath — it might be a rush, and you might not see sunlight for the next week, but it is possible to do everything you need to in the time youâve got. All you need to do (and this is the important bit) is make sure you stick religiously to your timetable. Hereâs how:
 4. Let things be less-than-perfect
![write an essay on three hours Not every work of art can be perfect; sometimes you really must wrap it up and move on.](https://www.oxford-royale.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/modern-art.jpg)
If youâre still not happy with something near the end of the time youâve allotted for it — tough. Finish up and leave it in its imperfect state — if youâre lucky, you might have time at the end to come back to it, but itâs much more important to stick to a schedule which will allow you to get everything done than it is to perfect one part of the task. This means not reading that extra useful-looking article, not toying with the wording in an introduction any longer, and leaving a problem you just canât solve. Remember — when youâre working on any task, itâs completely normal that that task will feel like the most important one — but itâs important to take a step back and gain some perspective over your whole project. Iâm constantly messing up because I find it really hard to leave things alone – – for example, I wasnât happy with my dissertation last year the day before I handed it in, and decided to stay up all night before the deadline restructuring and rewriting the last 3,000 words before Iâd even begun my referencing or conclusion. This meant (as Iâm sure you can guess) that the section I rewrote was garbled and full of spelling mistakes, my footnotes and bibliography were a total mess and my conclusion was 5 lines long- not exactly what Iâd planned when I decided to begin my noble rewriting mission, and not exactly the formula for a winning dissertation. Polished and finished, if slightly flawed, work will always make a much better impression than something messy and incomplete, even if itâs more carefully thought out — it actively irritates examiners to find silly mistakes or signs of haste in things theyâre marking. Take it from me, look at the bigger picture and simply move on .
5. Be selfish
![write an essay on three hours Party balloons.](https://www.oxford-royale.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/party.jpg)
Iâve got a friend who actively refuses to make any plans other than a quick coffee for about four weeks before any deadline. Sometimes she doesnât leave her house for days, and while sheâs working she lets other people cook for her and tidy up her mess. Last year she didnât go to her boyfriendâs birthday party because it was the week before a talk she was preparing. Now, this might all sound a bit mad, but my friend always does really, really well at everything she puts her mind to. Basically, in quite an extreme way sheâs got her priorities straight — most of the time sheâll do anything for anyone, but when sheâs got important work on her plate, sheâll say honestly that she needs to concentrate, and just canât make other commitments. I, meanwhile, work in the absolute opposite way. I let friends come to visit me the week before a deadline because I donât want to annoy them by cancelling, and am anxious about work and cranky for the whole time theyâre there. Iâll go to the library with someone else but get annoyed when we distract each other. I end up getting so stressed out over all the commitments Iâve made that I canât concentrate even when Iâve actually got time to work. Iâve come to conclude that my friendâs got it sorted. When youâve got stuff to do, be selfish. This is one of very few chances youâll have in your life (apart from, if youâre a girl, maybe your wedding) to be totally unreasonable, self-centred, and rude to everyone around you. Like a mad cross between Professor Snape and Kim Jong Un. Get your mum to make you dinner but refuse to sit and eat it at the table. Cancel plans, leave a mess. Refuse to read someone elseâs work or do anyone a favour. Your friends might not like the new crazy you, but youâll probably annoy them just as much by being irritable and stressed than you will by being selfish — and if you pick the latter course, you might actually get stuff done.
6. Do not entertain the thought that you might not finish
With the energy Iâve spent over the years asking for extensions, making up excuses or writing cringing apology emails to tutors and employers explaining that I just havenât done things, I could have written novels. Stuff it, I could have written the Iliad . Extensions and the like might feel brilliant in the short term, but theyâre not the solution to anything — youâll still have to do the work one way or another, and youâll annoy people and complicate your own life in the process of putting it off.
7. Just do the work
This is fairly self-explanatory. Though this article has tried to show that you can make things seem easier and more surmountable by organising, rationalising, and preparing, there are no magic solutions that can make you work miraculously quickly. Thereâs no substitute for sitting down, closing the door, turning off the internet and just doing your work . It might not be exactly fun, but itâll feel worth it when youâre done, and then you can sleep and relax properly without feeling guilty or stressed. Got any top tips for getting things done quickly? đ How to write a University Essay in 3 Hours
Against all advice, I did work full time during my 3 first years at university studying medicine. Now, I'm not going to argue as to whether that was the best decision in the world, but as you can imagine, I didn't always have the luxury of time when it came to studying or completing university projects.
So, whether I liked it or not, I did have to step it up and develop ways to get a lot done fast, easily and without procrastinating. Now, while I don't condone leaving things to the last minute and doing them in a rush, systems do help make not-so-enjoyable activities more efficient.
So here is how I would write good university essays in medical school in 3 hours .
First things first. I'm going to be using Notion. It's beautiful, clean, easy to use, generally brilliant and I keep everything in my life on it. I have a whole second brain on Notion if you're into that kind of a thing, have a video about it which will be linked somewhere.
I'll be breaking down every step so that's it's easy to replicate. Let's say our essay title is " The importance of teaching skills for the modern doctor ", an essay I had to write last year.
Firstly, let's create a new page in Notion that has database. This sounds fancy, but it's super easy to navigate. I'm going to create multiple columns. The first one will have the essential three part structure of our essay.
We'll have to start it, write something and then end it, so it will have to have an intro, body and conclusion.
I don't like to write essays top to bottom, I like to build on components one by one, and slowly expand. I find this takes a lot less time and makes writing endlessly easier.
![write an essay on three hours](https://static.wixstatic.com/media/92947d_47bf50b3f01b4f9fa0fe44ab07ac2b07~mv2.png/v1/fill/w_49,h_23,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,blur_2,enc_auto/92947d_47bf50b3f01b4f9fa0fe44ab07ac2b07~mv2.png)
Here's where I'll start expanding a bit more on this basic structure.
I feel one of the ways people lose points easily with essays is when they miss out on key assessment points. No matter how fancy your essay is, how many quotes and studies you mention, if you don't have all the components in the assessment, you can't get full marks. So this is the easiest thing to get right and guarantee a pass.
Going to my assessment criteria for this essay, I see that they want me to refer to quite a few things. I'll start adding them in rows in my essay's body.
This essay has 10 assessment points. I check to see if I can merge any of these, but in the case of this essay, they work quite well on their own. That's 10 separate points I will need to make in the body, already done for me.
If you don't have assessment criteria that lend themselves easily to the content of the essay (which I've often had too), we need to make them up ourselves. This is where I will stop and brainstorm for about 5 minutes on different points I can make related to the essay's body.
This should all take 5-10 minutes max.
This is where we will begin to branch out a bit.
So, introduction. I'll need to set the scene for the essay itself. When writing introductions, I like to imagine I'm having a conversation with someone who doesn't know the title of my essay, and I'm not allowed to say it to them explicitly. What I do instead, is set the scene by putting the topic in context in such a way, that if they were to ask one question about it, it would be the title of my essay.
So in this case, the first thing I need to do is explain why it's important for a doctor to be a teacher, this in some form will be my first paragraph.
And something else I need to mention, because this is a reflective essay, is that I actually did some teaching of my own and explain the purpose of the essay itself.
Introduction done.
With the body, I'm going to go to every assessment point, one by one, and see if they stand as a paragraph I can write on, or if I can merge any of them.
With the conclusion, I do the same. I want to end this essay by talking about the wider context of higher education and its implications for professional practice of medicine. And something about how this experience changed me.

Column two done. This should take about 10-20 minutes.
This is where we start to have fun. For every aim I created, I want to make a single point. In a good essay, every paragraph needs to put forward a clear argument. And this is what I'll need to find: a single sentence preferably, which will be the core of every paragraph, fulfilling the aims I've just written.
In my essays, these single points are either quotes, studies, personal experiences or thoughts. For example, if I want to set the scene on why it's important for a doctor to be a teacher, I'll use this quote from Richard Feynman which says: "A young man doesnât realize how much time it takes to prepare good lectures, for the first time, especiallyâand to give the lectures, and to make up exam problems, and to check that theyâre sensible ones." Isn't that beautiful. It's so appropriate for my essay, all I'll need to do is expand on it to create a full paragraph.
![write an essay on three hours](https://static.wixstatic.com/media/92947d_9859a56d598b414fab610120bdf7b7c8~mv2.png/v1/fill/w_49,h_23,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,blur_2,enc_auto/92947d_9859a56d598b414fab610120bdf7b7c8~mv2.png)
I continue this way for every main aim. I'll add some quotes from books (I keep these all in my notes, but you can google them). I'll search PubMed for relevant studies and keep note of of the results that are relevant to me. I'll use feedback others have given on my performance as a teacher, and add all this.
I'll keep a column for the sources (especially for studies, this is super important). So, in the same row, if I've mentioned a study, I have its resource saved for later.
This part usually takes me 30 minutes , but that's because I have a second brain, if you don't this might take an hour. So at this point, at worst, we're up to 1.5h of work done.
Only now, I'll actually start writing my essay. And although this is the dreaded part (and it's no serious fun in this case either) it is ENDLESSLY easier.
It feels like someone has already done all the research, all the planning, all the structuring for me. I don't feel like I need to write a WHOLE essay, I feel like I just need to create little paragraphs for various points, which is actually, quite an easy job to do.
So for every argument I've made, I'll just expand on it a bit more. Explaining why I'm talking about it, how it relates to this essay, to me, to my experience. I add some fancy words and numbers and that's my essay sorted.
![write an essay on three hours](https://static.wixstatic.com/media/92947d_97b40d4699464810947f789eb01167e9~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_147,h_56,al_c,q_80,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,blur_2,enc_auto/92947d_97b40d4699464810947f789eb01167e9~mv2.jpg)
This part usually takes me about an hour.
At this point, I leave my essay as is. It's hard for me to "see" what I've written if I've spent too long looking at it. So I like to rest my eyes and mind from the essay for at least a couple of hours, but hopefully a couple of days.
I then take all the paragraphs and just merge them together in one essay. I re-read it and make small changes for about 30 mins and then I just send it in.
Hope this helps :)

How Long Does It Take to Write a 1000 Word Essay?

How long does it take to research an essay?
If you’re writing an opinion piece on something you already have some knowledge about, you may not have to do any research at all. It may just be a matter of organizing your existing thoughts into a coherent essay. If you need to find out about a topic before you begin to write, you can easily get information on certain topics, whilst others will be more obscure and therefore more difficult to research. Clearly, the easier it is to find information, the faster you can write.
How good are your reading comprehension skills?
Some of us can just skim a piece and pick up all the salient points. Others will have to read with more attention, and even re-read a piece several times to extract the information we need. Having good reading and comprehension skills makes writing much faster since you’re able to “get” the facts faster and organize them better. Now you know why you had to do so many reading comprehension tests at school.
How well did you plan?
Throwing yourself headlong at a 1,000-word essay and writing till you reach the word count may seem like the easy option, but it isn’t. Planning your essay so that it begins with an introduction, highlights the most important points you want to make and then wraps everything up into a conclusion actually saves you time. Sometimes, essay instructions will tell you how to structure the piece, so read them carefully and extract any information you can use to guide your essay’s structure.
How fast do you type?
Have you ever gotten lost halfway through a sentence? You know what you wanted to say, but halfway through, the thought slips away from you. The faster you can type , the more easily you can capture thoughts before your mind moves onto the next thing and you forget what you were trying to say. Typing skills are essential in the modern world. Consider using typing games to improve your speed.
How long does it take me to write a 1,000-word essay?
Faster isn’t always better. The more in-depth your report is meant to be, the longer you should spend on it. I can usually research and write a fairly technical magazine article of 1,000 words in three hours, but do remember that I’m a professional writer. I’m fast because I write all day, every day.
The longest I’ve ever spent on a 1,000-word article was 12 hours. It was absolutely brutal! The information I needed to gather was very technical, hard to find, and even more difficult to understand, and you can’t write something until you really understand the subject matter. I also had to contact experts for their opinions, but I couldn’t even ask about their opinions until I could target them with the right questions. As a result, I actually had to write most of the article before slotting in the expert comment.
The quickest I’ve ever written a 1,000-word article is one hour. In this case, I already knew the subject matter well and didn’t have to back up every fact in the essay with references.
Reviewing your work also matters
If you’re writing for grades and want a good one, you need a really good essay. Don’t start writing it the day before you have to hand it in. Try and get your first draft down at least a day or two before you have to submit your work. Then return to it and do your editing. Read your essay aloud to yourself, since this will help you pick up any careless errors you wouldn’t otherwise spot. Check to see if your information flows logically from one point to the next and make sure that you’ve presented your information clearly.
Remember, teachers get tired. They have to read the same kind of essay over and over again when they grade. If they struggle to understand what you’re saying, you might not get as good a grade as you would if you stuck to using short sentences and relatively simple language.
Your reviewing process shouldn’t take all that long. If you don’t have to make a lot of changes, you should be able to do your final edit in under half an hour.
Take your time. Whatever you do, don’t rush. You might want your essay to be written quickly, but if it’s an important essay, taking your time will give you a better finished product. Budget your time conservatively. It’s better to find that you’ve still got time left over than to run out of time and end up dashing things off with a looming deadline.

This isn’t accurate. I wrote my 1000 word essay in an hour, not three hours. You should change the times you have listed to reflect how long it actually takes to write. Obviously you don’t know since the mes you listed are not the same as what I can do!
Did you even read the article? The writer says that it’s based on what she writes and is just a general approximation. How long it takes you or anybody else to write an essay will obviously be different because you’re not the same as everybody else. Nobody writes at the same speed so how long it takes you to write an essay will be different for every person.
Someone doesn’t understand the meaning of “rough estimate”
Well then you must be superhuman or some shit I donât care, I came here for a question not your butthurt comments. Also, if your so good at writing I wouldnât have found 2 typos in 2 sentences đ
*you’re
If you already have all the research done and know what you want to say, then a 1000 word essay shouldn’t take more than an hour to write. In fact, it probably can be done in 30 minutes or less. The time-consuming part of an essay is the research and how long that takes depends on how much you have to do. But the actual writing of the essay shouldn’t take too long at all.
But research is part of the writing process. If a person writes a book, they don’t only count the time it took them at the typewriter writing. They count all the time it took to research the book as well. Trying to separate the two doesn’t make sense.
I think an important thing to point out here is that there’s a huge difference between writing a 1000 word essay and writing a good 1000 word essay. You can write an essay in hardly any time at all if you don’t do the proper research and don’t spend time editing what you wrote. If you’re going to write a good essay, it’s going to take more time. You should always give yourself more time than you think you’re going to need to get it done.
This applies to all writing. Writing and writing something something well will have a huge time discrepancy even if both writings are the same length. Just because you are able to finish something quickly doesn’t mean that’s the best way to do it.
Exactly! Actually, it can take hours or days to come up with the right line – or it can come in seconds. There’s no real counting in terms of the creative process.
Days to come up with the right line? đ
It does. Sometimes, no matter how hard you look at something, you won’t be satisfied with it. It may take you days to figure it out. And then, one fine day, you suddenly stand up right in the middle of breakfast and then run upstairs and then type out the right line. Source: personal experience
I just spent 8 hours on a 500-word monologue… This comment made me feel better.
Wow, your advice is excellent it motivated me to do a lot better in my essay.
In my opinion, hours that are presented here a partially true. It may take about an hor to write 300 word essay but editing also takes some time. So on averege, I count the time to write the piece itself + time edit everything.
Research, first draft writing, editing, and rewriting are all part of the writing process. I think the time it takes to do all of them should be counted in the time it takes.
It takes way too long! Teachers should not be allowed to assign essays more than 250 words. They always complain they don’t have enough time and work too hard. It’s only because they make their students do too much work!!
This comment just makes you look lazy. 250 words is nothing. Any topic that needs to be explored will take many more words than this. If you don’t want to write, just admit it and don’t try to project that on others.
If you do your research, use annotations for resources and understand to whom and what you have to transfer than the fewer words the better. Remember that you are demonstrating deep knowledge of the topic by making it accessible to the audience without them doing the research. Simplify, simplify, simplify.
Contrary to what academia self-righteously preach, its imperative for any writing and explanation of thought to be simplified. If you cant explain it in short time/short essay you don’t understand it enough.
I disagree, I feel 250 words is way too less to explain any topic. In my opinion, the maximum word count for an essay should be 1500.
It should take long enough that you get all the points you want across in the writing, but not too long as to bore the reader. Writing should be engaging, not boring.
Nice philosophy, but completely unhelpful if you have a paper due tomorrow and limited amount of time to write. The real world doesn’t work that way.
If someone has an essay due tomorrow and they waste time reading this, then they are a bit of an idiot for giving themselves even less time to work with. If they’re leaving work to the last minute like that, then the only thing they should be doing is jumping right in and writing (or planning the essay, but that should be done much sooner).
This is so arbitrary and will depend on the individual. It’s like asking the question, “how long does it take to write a book?” For some, it will only take a couple of months while for others it will take a lifetime. it also depends on the type of writing you’re doing. Some writing is easy and quick and other writing is difficult and requires huge amounts of research.
The uphill task of writing an essay is doing thorough research. Once you have completed the research, you can deliver a 1000 word paper per hour
I completely agree with you on that one. I recently worked on a 4000 word essay, and while the research did take me three hours to conduct, I completed the essay itself in a bit less than four hours and scored a total of 32/34 points.
So happy to read that! That’s because I just realised, that that is what I needed to read. I’ve got two months to write six 2500 word essays. I’ve been procrastinating because I’m simply in fear of doing a bad job. I’ve done lots of research; made lots of notes; collected citations and written nothing. It’s time. I can do this!
Iâm writing a 1600 word essay right now as I type this lol
Then show me after you have finished.
Im writing a 2500 word essay, almost done, I can’t even imagine writing a 10000 word essay in university, that sounds EXTREMELY painful đ
I found these estimations quite accurate, thank you.
I’m writing a narrative for my English class right this moment and the word requirements are 800-1000. I’ve only been working for two hours and I’m at 1,157. I’m nowhere near done…
your word requirements are 800-1000 and u have 1157? You’ve been done for a while I would say
Wow i have to write a 1 500 word essay in 4 days and I have about 1050 words left Dono how long thats gonna take me đđđđ
I am writing a dissertation and those estimations made me positive because just 41 hour to write 12,000 essay seems nothing. But at the moment I just finished literature review(though the hardest part yet) without editing I am already at over 35 hours of work. And that’s not even a half! But I am aiming for a good grade though…
Iâve found these estimates incredibly accurate in my years in college. Iâm about to graduate next week and have one more 3500 word paper to write. Weâll see if the estimates hold true. However, the estimates (for me at least) donât include the time it takes to edit so I usually add a little time depending on how long the essay/paper has to be.
Wow, these tips are helpful, Thank You to the creator of this website. These tips helped me a lot in my essay for school.

![write an essay on three hours 7 Top Tips on Writing the Time](https://proofed.com/wp-content/webp-express/webp-images/uploads/2019/07/date.png.webp)
7-minute read
- 25th July 2019
As anyone who has turned up for a midday meeting at midnight will tell you, clarity is vital when writing the time of day. But there are many ways to write the time, and the best approach isnât always obvious. We have a few tips to help, though.
1. Words or Numerals?
You can write the time of day using either words or numerals. If you are using numerals, you would usually include both hours and minutes, although you can omit the minutes in less formal writing .
For instance, all the following would be acceptable:
She gets up at six in the morning every day.
She gets up at 6:00 in the morning every day.
She gets up at 6 oâclock in the morning every day.
As a rule, though, you would only write out the time as words when:
- It is part of a full sentence, particularly in descriptive or literary writing.
- Using a 12-hour clock (never with a 24-hour clock ).
- You’re referring to an approximate or round time (e.g., saying âten thirtyâ is fine, but you would not usually write âtwenty-four minutes after eightâ).
In most other cases, numerals are the clearer option for writing the time, especially in scientific and technical writing, where precision is vital.
2. AM and PM
The abbreviations AM and PM can be used when writing the time as numerals. Each applies to a different time of day:
- AM is short for ante meridiem , meaning âbefore noon.â
- PM is short for post meridiem , meaning âafter noon.â
As such, we use AM and PM to indicate the time of day when we are using a 12-hour clock. We can see how this works more clearly if we write out various times of day in both 12-hour and 24-hour formats:
|
|
|
Midnight | 12:00 AM | 00:00 |
Three in the morning | 03:00 AM | 03:00 |
Half past eight in the morning | 08:30 AM | 08:30 |
Midday | 12:00 PM | 12:00 |
Three in the afternoon | 03:00 PM | 15:00 |
Half past eight in the evening | 08:30 PM | 20:30 |
You can see here that we need AM and PM with the twelve-hour clock for clarity. Without them, we wouldnât be able to tell the difference between, e.g., midday and midnight. Likewise, though, you do not need to include AM or PM with a 24-hour time because it is already clear.
There are also several ways to write AM and PM, including:
- ALL CAPS, small caps , or lower case (e.g., 12 AM, 12 AM , or 12 am)
- With or without periods between the letters (e.g., 8 PM or 8 P.M.)
- With or without a space after the number (e.g., 1 AM or 1AM)
Consistency is key here, so make sure to apply one style throughout your document. You may also want to check your style guide if you have one, as some organizations will have their own rules for how to write AM and PM.
3. When to Use Oâclock
Youâll have noticed we use âoâclock â in one of the examples above. This term means âof the clock,â so we can use it to show that a number refers to a time.
However, you should only use âoâclockâ with exact hours:
It is precisely 5 oâclock . â
Iâm leaving at seven oâclock . â
It arrived at 7:34 oâclock . â
The gig starts at half past seven oâclock . â
Weâll save a discussion of when wine oâclock is for another blog post.

4. Past, After, Till, and To
When writing the time as words, use âafter,â âpast,â and âtoâ for intervals between hours. You can combine these terms with either numbers or the words âhalfâ and âquarterâ depending on the time in question:
- Use after or past for intervals up to half an hour past the hour.
- Use to for any interval after the half hour up to the hour.
- Use half past to indicate 30 minutes past the hour.
- Use quarter past or quarter after for 15 minutes after the hour.
- Use quarter to for 15 minutes up to the hour.
For example, we would use the above accordingly in the following times:
7:05 â Five after seven
7:15 â Quarter past seven
7:30 â Half past seven
7:45 â Quarter to eight
7:55 â Five to eight
Keep in mind that using “after” for times is only standard in American English. In other English dialects, “past” is far more common.
5. Punctuating the Time
When writing the time as numerals, you can use either a colon or a period between the hour and the minutes. In some cases, such as in the military , you can even write out a 24-hour time without any punctuation.
For instance, the following are all acceptable ways of punctuating a time:
We need to leave by 6:45 pm at the latest. â
We need to leave by 6.45 pm at the latest. â
We need to leave by 1845 at the latest. â
The colon is the most common option here, but it is a matter of preference. Unless youâre in the military, in which case we suggest sticking to protocol.
6. Time Zones
For the contiguous states in the USA, we have four standard time zones:
- Pacific Time (PT) [UTC-08:00]
- Mountain Time (MT) [UTC-07:00]
- Central Time (CT) [UTC-06:00]
- Eastern Time (ET) [UTC-5:00]
We also have regional time zones for Alaska, Hawaii, and 5 US dependencies, plus daylight saving time in some places during the warmer months of the year. And people in other countries use different time zones entirely!
Basically, weâre saying geography can make time complicated.
This is why we sometimes include a time zone when writing the time. The initials UTC above, for instance, stand for Coordinated Universal Time . We can use this to compare times in different places. So, âUTC-8:00â means Pacific Time is 8 hours behind UTC. And since we know Pacific Time is 8 hours behind UTC and Eastern Time is 5 hours behind UTC, we can work out that ET is 3 hours ahead of PT.
In other words, by including a time zone when we write a time, we can help people in other places âtranslateâ it into their own time zone.
This is important if you are writing for an international audience, since not everyone will be in the same time zone. You thus need to include a set of time zone initials so your reader can calculate the equivalent time where they are. For example, if we were writing a time for an international audience, we might say:
The live broadcast will begin at 9:00 pm UTC .
Someone in Bolivia could then look up the difference between UTC and BOT (Bolivia Time) and know the broadcast begins at 5:00 pm where they are.
7. Avoiding Redundancy when Writing the Time
In writing, redundancy means using a word unnecessarily. We mentioned above, for example, that you do not need to use AM or PM with 24-hour times because we already know whether a time is the morning or afternoon/evening when using a 24-hour clock.
Other cases of temporal redundancy you may want to avoid include:
- Using âin the morning,â âin the afternoon,â etc., alongside AM/PM.
- Combining âin the morning,â âin the afternoon,â etc., with a 24-hour time.
- Using âmidday,â ânoon,â or âmidnightâ alongside a time in numbers.
Weâll end this post with a few examples of redundancies so you know what to watch out for. Check out the table below, good luck writing the time, and let us know if you need any help proofreading your work.

â Hey guys. So previously I've done a video where I talked about how to write a thousand word, a thousand, a thousand-worded essay, and one hour. And so that segues into this particular video where I'm talking about writing three essays in three hours. So if you haven't watched that video, then I'll pop it up in the comment. I'll pop it up in the card up above. I would recommend you go watch that first before you watch this, because pretty much all of the concepts that I talk about in that video, uh, I just expected details that you should know for this video. So instead of actually breaking down the essays as I did in the previous video, what I'm going to do this time is talk more so about, you know, how to actually write three essays in three hours and just not get burnt out and not die, basically. â Yeah, it's that serious. So I've got a few tips for you guys, but I'll keep this short. First thing is that yes, you do want to practice at least one time writing three essays in three hours. And the reason why I say that is because inevitably there will come times where one essay will kind of overlap into another hour. And you just want to ensure that you can know how to handle those situations when we're practicing in one hour blocks. I think it's fantastic to make sure that we can do that, but then kind of like three hours and three essays is another ballgame altogether. So I would recommend at least practicing once sitting down somewhere and just smashing out the three hours worth of work, just so that you know exactly what it's going to feel like when you go into the exam. Now, most schools will actually offer a, like a mock exam for you to do so that literally could be your one practice that you just need. But if you were like me, you might want to do it twice. So in your own time, kind of print off your own exam paper and go ahead and just set aside three hours and just do it that way. The second thing is I heavily emphasized doing reading time. So reading time is pretty much your mental thinking game going strong. And this is where a lot of your pre-work will be done before we actually go into the essays themselves. So make sure you practice reading time. It's 15 minutes before the actual exam, but in that 15 minutes, you can plan three of your essays and you can look up in your dictionary, any key words that you might want to define, or you could even look up the dictionary and try to find synonyms for particular keywords. So what I mean by that is when you open up a dictionary and you look up that word inside the dictionary, often the definition for it will have synonyms for it. So that's like my little hack that I had when I was at school. And then the last thing I would say is just make sure you know what to do if you go over time. So, like I mentioned before, there may be situations where, you know, worst case scenario, you don't finish your essay in time. And that could be because of many reasons. But first thing for you to remember is if you're running over time, sacrifice your conclusion first, do not sacrifice your third body paragraph. I think mostly what happens is students will kind of be somewhere in the third body paragraph for that essay, but rather than skipping that and just do it a little bit of a mess to finish it up and then going into the conclusion, finish off your third body paragraph. And then just forget about the conclusion. The reason why I say that is because a conclusion is basically just the summary of what your entire essay is about. It's not really supposed to be, to add in any new information where as your third body paragraph. You're still explaining your ideas. You're still elaborating and discussing the prompt itself. So that is way more important to get you the marks that you need than a conclusion. The next thing I would do if you're running behind is save a proofreading until very last. So in the last video I talked about doing proofreading last five minutes of every essay. But if you do not have time for that later, leave all your proofreading until the very end and, and you might find that you only have five minutes, it's true proofread all of your essays, but at least you kind of have that reassurance was that you made yourself more time to write beforehand. And so if you literally find yourself writing right up until the last minute and you can't perforate fine sacrifice that too. â Now last thing is, let's just say that you have sacrificed your conclusion and you're still writing your third body paragraph right up until the very last minute. You still have at least half a paragraph to go, but you know, the first hour is over and you need to move onto your second essay. I feel like you can either approach this two ways. The first way is just finish it off, but then move on to the next one as quick as possible. And obviously your hope there is that you will finish the second essay in time within that hour. So that by the time you get to your thing, essay, you are on track again. Right? But in the other alternative that you could do, and probably one that I via towards a little bit more is just stop your third paragraph. Okay? You still have maybe five more sentences you still want to write, but just move onto your next one. I think that's kind of important because what happens is once we start running into the next hour, you will find that with your first essay, you'll run maybe five minutes into your second hour, but then you might find that you run 10 minutes into the third hour with your second essay leaving only 15 minutes to finish your third essay. And that might not be like what you want. And you might know that you just won't be able to achieve that because the third essay is maybe the hardest one that you left to last. And that's the one that usually takes you the longest. So yeah, like these are just thoughts and considerations for you guys to take away with whatever you guys do. I think just be strategic. Think about these things beforehand, because they are things that could trip you up when you are in the exam, you're stressed, you're anxious, you're under time pressure and you just need to get things done. It might kind of make you do like bad decisions or you might do something out of the ordinary that you normally wouldn't do. But if you think about these things beforehand and think about, okay, this is what I'm going to do. If this situation occurs, then at least you kind of have some control over what's happening. And that gives you a little bit of reassurance. That is it from me. I wanted to let you guys know that because we are approaching the end of year. And I know that you guys might not need English help from me very shortly, especially when you're in year 12. I wanted to let you guys know that I do have a personal YouTube channel as well. So that's just linked up above for you. And also in the description box below. If you're interested in following me there, then go ahead and subscribe. I would really love to see you guys there and just be able to still have the connection with you guys. You know, it'd be nice to not only just have you guys on board with me for a year, and then you guys kind of disappear and do your own thing, I'd still really love to stay in contact and be able to hear how you guys are going to once you finish school. So I will see you guys next time. Bye!

Itâs getting closer to the Literature exam and youâre probably starting to get more serious about avoiding dropping too many SAC marks! Depending on which order your school does Literature SACs in, you may be currently facing the often feared âCreative Responseâ. Whether you feel beyond excited to finally bring some creative flair to Literature, or youâre totally scared at the thought of creating something new, I wanted to use this blog post to help you achieve at least ten of the marks in this section. That is through the reflective commentary, which you can totally score full marks on if you put in the effort.
The VCAA Literature Study Design determines that students must submit âa reflective commentary establishing connections with the original textâ. This aspect of the assessment counts for 10 of the 60 marks available for the Creative Response outcome. The study design further denotes that students must
âreflect critically upon their own responses as they relate to the text, and discuss the purpose context of their creationsâ.
This allows your schools and teachers to direct in a relatively broad way on how you should form your reflective commentary, and may mean your friends at other schools write theirs in a very different way. In this blog post I will leave you with a suggestion of how I best believe a reflective commentary could be structured to include all important aspects, as well as tips on how to include all of what the study design asks. As I said, these are ten marks that can easily be snatched with just a little bit of hard work and attention to detail, so why not snatch them?
To induce the things needed to be included in the reflective commentary, we can look to the key knowledge and key skills points outlined in the study design:
Key knowledge:
- the point of view, context and form of the original text,
- the ways the central ideas of the original text are represented,
- the features of the original text including ideas, images characters and situations, and the language in which these are expressed,
- techniques used to create, recreate or adapt a text and how they represent particular concerns or attitudes.
Key skills:
- identify elements of construction, context, point of view and form particular to the text, and apply understanding of these in a creative response
- choose stylistically appropriate features including characterisation, setting, narrative, tone and style
- critically reflect on how language choices and literary features from the original text are used in the adaptation
What youâre really trying to do in your reflective commentary is prove to your teacher that you are hitting all these key knowledge and key skills points. As you write, ensure you are discussing how the author uses point of view, context, form, elements of construction and stylistic features in their text. It is than imperative that you describe how you have similarly used such device in your creative response. Ensure that you also discuss how you are involving the ideas and themes of the text in your creative piece, and how you are discussing them further, or exploring them in greater depth. Obviously only talk about those that are relevant to your creative response!
Sample reflective commentary
Having scored a 10/10 in my own reflective commentary, I will provide a structure that can be used to ensure you are including everything you need. I discussed my own reactions to the original text, and described how I wanted to rouse similar reactions in the reader of my creative response.
In your reflective commentary, it can be easier to put everything under subheadings. These are the ones that I used:
-Characterisation
-Literary features (here I chose 7 particular literary features used in my text and discussed how I emulated them)
Under each of these paragraphs, I analysed how the author used such features to create and convey meaning, and discussed how I, in my own piece, drew on her use of them and expanded on her ideas. Here is an example of my âPurposeâ paragraph, which will hopefully give you an idea on how you might write your own commentary! My text was Cate Kennedyâs Dark Roots , in particular the short story âWhat Thou and I Did, Till we Lovedâ.
In my piece, I ultimately attempted to lead the reader to a place of discomfort, faced with a situation that they wish never to be faced with. When I first read What Thou and I Did, Till we Loved (Dark Roots, Cate Kennedy), I simply wished never to be in Rebeccaâs position, as I was sobered by the sadness of her demise as she watched her lover fade away. I sought to elicit the same response from the reader, as I aimed to convey the deterioration that both lovers suffer, as well as the loss of communication between them. I also attempted to allow the reader to question the humanity in keep people alive by machines and drugs, and whether it is fair to force people to live an unnatural life. I have sought to explore this even further than What Thou and I Did, Till we Loved bringing in the question of euthanasia and whether we have a right to die as Kyle begs of Max to âkill meâ at the end of the piece, and Max concedes that â[he] would if [he] couldâ. The themes of my piece seeks to explore are the ways of coping with grief, guilt at causing the illness of a loved one, a life with a lack of substance, and the loss of communication due to illness.
Hopefully youâre feeling better about how you might go about completing your creative response, and getting that 10/10 on your reflective commentary!
Are you a slow writer who struggles to write down all of the information that you hear in the listening audio clip? Have you ever been in a situation where the next sentence in the audio comes up way before you finish writing down information from the previous sentence? If yes, then this blog is for you!Â
You want to write down as much useful information as possible in a short period of time during your VCE EAL exam, so it is very useful to implement a system of techniques that works well for you personally. Here are some ideas and suggestions that you may want to use to increase the speed of your note-taking.Â
1. Use Different Coloured Pens or Keys for Different Speakers
Under the stress of exams/SACs, you might lose track of which speaker is talking. This is likely to happen if the speakers are of the same sex or they sound similar to each other (from personal experience, I had a listening task with 3 female speakers!) A simple way to remind yourself of who is speaking is to take side notes with different coloured pens and/or symbols for different speakers.Â
â For example:
If in the audio: Lisa says, âThe weather is lovelyâ and Cici replies âLetâs go for a runâ. We can write side notes using L (for Lisa) and C for Cici, which may look like:Â
L âweather is lovelyâ
C 'Let's go for a runâÂ
Or, you could use a red pen for Lisa and blue pen for Cici.Â
2. Use Signs & Symbols to Replace Words
Using symbols is an efficient way to increase the speed of writing and ultimately increase the amount of information that you can record. Here are some examples of symbols I have used in the past and the meanings I gave them.Â
â Leading to/Stimulate/Result in
â Increase  Â
â Decrease Â
â ExchangeableÂ
â Cross/Incorrect  Â
⎠Therefore OR ConsequentlyÂ
? Uncertain/Possibly/Disapprove Â
> Greater than/More than
< Less than/Fewer than
~ Approximately OR Around OR Similar to OR Not Equal OR Not the same as
c/b Could beÂ
- Negative/BeforeÂ
+ Positive/Plus
3.Use Abbreviations
Use abbreviations that work for you. There is no right or wrong here as the âblank space for scribblesâ will not be marked. Abbreviations can take the form of short notes or letters...you get to be creative here!
You can also choose to keep only the essential vowels and consonants in words. Or, leave out the double consonants and silent letters. The following list contains some abbreviations for common words or phases:
Answer = answ
About = abt
Morning = amÂ
Afternoon = pm
As soon as possible = asapÂ
Before = bef/b4
Between = bt
Because = bc
Common = com
Condition = cond
Diagnosis = diag
Regular = reg
Notes = nts
With respect to = wrtÂ
Will be = w/bÂ
Within = w/iÂ
Without = w/o
Here are some examples of how you might use abbreviations and symbols:
âYou should remember to take notes in classesâÂ
Can be abbreviated as:
âU shld rmbr t tk nts in clsâ
Example 2 Â
âGidon has a rare blood condition which means he visits the hospital quite regularly. Since his diagnosis, Gidonâs family paid more than ten thousand dollars just to visit the hospital. Gidon initiated a petition that advocates for lowering the fees for parking in hospitals and putting a limit on how much the hospital can charge.â
- G has rare blood condi â he visits hosp. v. reg.
I've used G as an abbreviation for Gidon, and the arrow here represents that the stuff on the left side of the arrow (i.e. his rare blood condition), led to the events on the right side of the arrow (i.e. regular hospital visits).Â
- Since his diag. â Gâs fam paid >$10K to visit hosp.
Here Iâve also used the arrow, indicating that the stuff on the left side of the arrow (i.e. his diagnosis), led to the events on the right side of the arrow (i.e. Gidon's family paid more than 10 thousand dollars). Iâve also used >$10K to indicate that the amount Gidonâs family paid is more than 10 thousand dollars.
- G â petition â advocates for â $ parking & limit how much hosp. can charge
Using my symbols and abbreviations above, itâs your turn to work out how Iâve abbreviated this ;)
I hope these tips and tricks will assist you with note taking during the EAL listening SACs and exam. If you would like more practice on the listening section, check out the following blogs!

- Plot, Analysis, Important Passages and Quotes
1. Characters
Priam is an elderly king of Troy. As a child, his sister Hesione saved him from slavery, and had his named changed from Podarces to Priam, the name meaning âthe ransomed oneâ or âthe price paid'. After the death of his son Hector, Priam envisions himself in plain clothing, riding a plain cart to Achilles who is effectively holding Hector ransom. His vision is the catalyst for the novelâs events, for his journey is one of learning and self-development. Though the royal family is doubtful of his plan to save Hector, Priam is resolute and insists that he needs to try his best to confront Achilles as a father, rather than as king. After many decades as king of Troy, Priam is determined to reinvent how he will be remembered; as a king who performed an extraordinary act of heroism in order to save his beloved son.
Achilles is known as the greatest warrior of the Greeks. The death of Patroclus, his closest companion and hinted lover, drives Achilles to insanity. Hector murdered Patroclus and, as a result, Achilles takes revenge by killing Hector. He then drags Hectorâs dead body along the walls of Troy for the next 11 days. Achilles loses his sense of humanity as he is possessed by his rage, hatred and grief.
Somax is representative of the âcommon manâ in Ransom . He is chosen to escort Priam to Achilles. His simple and plain presence is contrasted with Priamâs royal status. He often engages in useless chatter and performs daily activities in a way that is foreign to the king. Although Somax is far from royalty, his great deal of affection for his daughter-in-law and granddaughter teaches Priam about love, family and life.
Beauty is Somaxâs favourite mule. She accompanies Priam and Somax on their journey to the Greek camp where Achilles resides.
Somaxâs other mule who carries the cart to Achillesâ camp.
Hecuba is Priamâs beloved wife and mother of Hector. She is initially uncertain of Priamâs vision to save Hector. However, after hearing Priamâs sentimental reasons, she shows support and urges him to first share his plan with their family and the kingdomâs council before he departs.
Hector is Priamâs son and also the leader of the Trojan army. He is kind, brave and noble without any cruel intentions, unlike his rival Achilles. During a battle between the Trojans and the Greeks, Hector kills Patroclus. This results in Achilles challenging Hector to a battle, resulting in Hectorâs death and Achillesâ triumph.
Neoptolemus
Neoptolemus is Achillesâ son. Although he is mentioned throughout Ransom , he makes his first appearance at the end of the novel where he savagely slaughters an old and defenseless Priam in an effort to avenge his fatherâs death. â

â 2. Themes
Ransom explores who we are and what it means to have an identity. As the leader of Troy for many decades, Priam has always viewed himself as a king. It appears as though Priam has been unhappy with his identity for quite some time, is physically weak, and feels as though he cannot protect his kingdom as efficiently as he used to. However, the death of Hector is a catalyst for Priam as he realises that he needs to become a âfatherâ rather than the âkingâ he had become so accustomed to. His search for Hector is also a search for himself, to reinvent who he is and how he wishes others to remember him.
Meanwhile, Somax is designated as the kingâs herald, with the name Idaeus. He secretly notes his unhappiness with this name appointment, since he is âSomax, not Idaeus'. The name âSomaxâ is associated with many significant events in his life including his marriage and family, yet the new unfamiliar name strips him of this identity. Somaxâs confidence and pride in his identity is starkly contrasted with Priamâs pursuit for an identity transformation.
Malouf demonstrates that it is never too late to change oneâs ways. Priamâs determination to change how he is remembered â from just another king leading a regal life to a hero who went to extraordinary lengths to regain his child â demonstrates that change is within our grasp. Even though his beautiful wife Hecuba and the rest of his family have reservations about his desire to confront Achilles, Priam is resolved in taking a âchance', rather than achieving nothing by remaining within the walls of his home. Unexpectedly, this one idea propels Priam into a multitude of other changes. His journey with Somax teaches Priam a far greater deal than he had anticipated, for he learns to appreciate the value of the human connection and other daily simplicities in life.
Although Achilles is driven by hatred and anger after Patroclusâ death, as with Priam, he manages to change his ways. He is touched by Priamâs pleas and consequently accepts the ransom and returns Hectorâs body. He is able to reach this state of peace by releasing his immoral intentions and even offers to hold a ritual for Hectorâs body in the Greek walls that very night. This transformation, from a human who responds to grief with vengeance to someone who releases and forgives, demonstrates the benefits we can gain from amending our ways.
Revenge, Guilt and Peace
Revenge is portrayed as a never-ending vicious cycle until both parties reach a negotiation or peace. After Patroclusâ death, Achilles hunts down Hector in order to avenge his best friendâs early death. Although he is successful in murdering Hector, Achilles does not follow the custom of leaving the body for the grieving family to bury. Instead, Achilles feels the need to mutilate the body day after day without any sense of remorse or regret. His additional need to inflict harm on Hectorâs body indicates that revenge will not bring closure. His sense of loss is shown as he reflects feeling empty inside, to the point where he no longer feels like himself, but someone else altogether.
Although Achilles and Priam ultimately find peace within themselves, many years later Achillesâ son Neoptolemus murders Priam, bounded by the same hatred and pain depicted by Achilles. Neoptolemusâ subsequent guilt and regret is carried with him throughout the rest of his life, demonstrating that again, revenge is not the answer to any problem.
Chance and Fate
The role of the gods is heavily woven into the events that unfold in Ransom. Priam only begins his transition and journey after envisioning the goddess Iris, who suggests that he take a âchanceâ and try to save Hector from Achillesâ camp. During his journey, a jovial young man who joins the travellers is revealed as Hermes, a god who has come to safely guide the elderly men to Achilles. The power of the gods in controlling human fate is illustrated during the scene where Hermes saves the travellers from being swept away by a stream.
Nevertheless, it can also be argued that it is the charactersâ decisions that lead them to their fate. Although the gods may have instilled in Priam the idea that he should rescue Hector, it is the kingâs determination which is a main driving force for the journey. Even when confronted with doubt and hesitancy from his family, it is Priam who pushes onwards to fulfil his vision. Whether his actions were already predestined or of his own agency is up to you to decide.
Nature Versus Man
Manâs presence on earth is shown to have little significance in comparison to the power of nature. While the events in Ransom teach the characters many valuable lessons, ultimately these meaningful moments in the humansâ lives disappear as one reaches their fate â death. Time moves on beyond our lives as we are forgotten over decades and centuries while nature prevails. Priamâs desire to be remembered by others highlights how little significance a life possesses unless one behaves extraordinarily. Malouf demonstrates that in the end, life just is â we are granted by nature to have a brief existence, yet in the end, nature and time will move forward without us.
Commoners Versus Royalty
Although royalty is portrayed to be blessed with power and authority, it is ironically the commoners in Ransom who appear to have the ârichestâ (and more fulfilling) lives. For the first time, Priam is exposed to the different interests and values of the common man and is intrigued by the simplicities of life. It is Somax, a mere old man from the marketplace, who teaches Priam more about life than he had imagined possible.
Joveâs Eagle
Joveâs eagle is a representation of a bird renowned for its keen sight. The presence of Joveâs eagle during Priam and Somaxâs departure hints that the gods will safely guide their journey as the bird behaves as a lookout. Furthermore, the symbol of the eagleâs powerful vision is contrasted with Priamâs âblindnessâ at the beginning of the journey since he is yet to experience the outside world. It is during the journey that he learns about himself and others, and thus, improves his âsight.â Coincidently, Joveâs eagle is no longer mentioned when Priam is endowed with his new insight.
The royal cart is âa fine new one, the marks of the adze still visible on its timbers. The twelve-spoked wheels are elaborately carved and painted, a wickerwork canopy covers the tray'. On all occasions, the king had used this elegant cart to alert others that royalty was present. The use of this cart demonstrates how Priam has been encapsulated in his own royal sphere since everything is meticulously chosen and designed specifically for the king. Nevertheless, his demand for a âcommon work cartâ depicts his determination for a simple approach to Achilles, as a father to another father. This simplicity highlights Priamâs desire to become just another man and father, anonymous in the plain cart with the hopes of retrieving Hector.
Priam as a Child
At the beginning of the journey, Priam is characterised with childish traits. When Somax urges Priam to dabble his feet in the stream, words such as âobedient toddler', âthree uncertain steps', and âhappy smileâ reflect the actions of a young child trying new experiences. This childish nature is contrasted with Priamâs old and frail age, which demonstrates that although he has lived a life in royalty, his lack of exposure to âreal lifeâ has left him crippled of the simplest experiences such as the cooling effect of feet in water and eating delicious homemade cookies.
The cakes Somax brings along during the journey highlight Priamâs lack of knowledge of even the simplest things. For Somax, the little griddlecakes are a regular and delectable snack, yet Priam 'ha[s] never seen them before'. Priamâs unfamiliarity with the cakes represents his isolation from the âreal worldâ since he has been deprived from things that even commoners view as ordinary.
Futhermore, Somaxâs lengthy chatter about his daughter-in-law cooking the cakes with the âbatter bubbling and setting and turning a golden brownâ prompts Priam to think about the activities in his kingdom that occur behind closed doors. He had previously never noticed that there was so much preparation and work that went into the food that appeared at his table, let alone the ingredients and thickness of a batter. These matters had been of little concern to Priam, yet he realises that even the âcommon and lowâŠactivities and facts of life, had an appeal'.
Hectorâs Body
Although Achilles drags Hectorâs body across the walls of Troy for eleven days, each morning he would return to find Hectorâs body healed of any wounds, and absent of any physical damage to his body. This is a cruel reminder of the godâs ability to âtoy aroundâ with the Ancient Greeksâ lives. Hectorâs body also symbolises how revenge is not the answer to any conflict, since dealing with a tragic loss through revenge does not gain anything but more pain and suffering.
Although Priam initially believes he understands the distress of losing a son, Somaxâs experience of losing his son is driven with emotions that Priam had never previously experienced. When sharing the story of his sonâs death, Somax sniffles, an âodd habitâ according to Priam. The use of âodd habitâ to describe Somaxâs sadness demonstrates how Priam has never truly felt the loss of his son, but only the loss of a royal relationship between king and prince.
Later on, Somax once again âsnufflesâ and ârubs his noseâ at the thought of the ending to their journey. Similarly, Priam makes âsmall sounds', presumably crying as well. The transformation of Priam from someone who failed to empathise with Somaxâs tears at the beginning of the journey to a man filled with emotions demonstrates that Priam undergoes both a physical and metaphysical journey where he undergoes self-development and appreciation of the world around him.
4. Plot, Analysis, Important Passages and Quotes
Achilles, the greatest warrior of the Greeks, stands next to the sea while reminiscing about the past. After his motherâs death he had âentered the rough world of menâ (p. 6) where wars and battles prevail. Every morning, he feels the need to âtramp to shoreâ (p. 10) since he is haunted by the death of his âsoulmate and companionâ Patroclus, and his raging hatred towards Hector, killer of Patroclus and thus, the âimplacable enemy'.
When Achilles was a child, his cousin Patroclus came to live with the young Achilles since the former had killed the son of a high official of the royal court due to a âquarrel over a game of knucklebonesâ (p. 11). In need of asylum, Patroclus came to live with Achillesâ family. As the years passed, the pair grew closer to the extent where Achilles believes that âhe had mated with Patroclusâ (p. 15).
When the tide of the battle was against the Greeks, Patroclus disguises himself in Achillesâ armour in order to instill fear in the Trojans and cause them to return to the safety of their walls, thus providing temporary relief for the Greeks. In his last act for his closest friend, Patroclus is killed in battle*. The death of Patroclus left Achilles with an overwhelming sense of loss and also burning animosity. Achilles whispers that he will join Patroclus soon, but firstly, he has to avenge Patroclusâ killer, Hector.
Hector, the son of Trojan king Priam and leader of the Trojan army, wore Achilles' armour as a sign of triumph and disrespect for the Greeks. In a dramatic battle between Hector and himself, Achilles was successful in killing his enemy. Achillesâ Myrmidons then stripped Hector of his armour and âwithout pityâŠplunged their swords into Hectorâs unprotected fleshâ (p. 24). For Achilles however, this was not enough. Still fuelled by his pain, Achilles ties Hectorâs body to a chariot and drags it âup and down under the walls of Troyâ (p. 26) as the dead warriorâs royal family devastatingly watches on. Achilles feels like a âdead manâŠfeeling nothingâ (p. 26), unable to seal the void left by his beloved friend.
The next day, Achilles is furious to find Hectorâs body âsmoothly sealed and the torn flesh made whole again'. His men cannot bear to look at him as he drives the chariot with Hectorâs body along the walls of the Trojans once again. Afterwards he quickly falls asleep, into âoblivionâ (p. 35) as he struggles with the shame and guilt of his actions. He is âwaiting for a breakâŠsomething new and unimaginableâ in his life.
The Human Side
Along with the conflict between Greece and Troy, Ransom also delves into the consequences of those affected by the war. As the greatest warrior of all Greeks, Achilles has lived his life as a fighter. Nevertheless, his pathway in life has led him to believe that âsuch a life is death to the warrior spiritâ (p. 7). While warriors are known for sacrificing their lives in the battlefield, Achilles does not literally refer to warriors confronting death each time they fight for their team. In fact, âdeath to the warrior spiritâ means to metaphorically lose what it means to âliveâ when one experiences bloodshed in each war. Growing up surrounded by âthe rough world of menâ (p. 6), Achilles develops traits of aggression, cruelty and vengefulness in order to become an implacable man of war. As a consequence, Achilles only knows how to deal with Patroclusâ death with a fighterâs mindset. Instead of grieving openly, âhe never permit[s] himself to betray to others what he [feels]â (p. 5), thus detaching himself from the natural human process of grieving. In order to deal with his friendâs tragic ending, Achilles' âsoul chang[es] colourâ as drags Hectorâs body for eleven days without any sense of regret or remorse, and thus, is referred to as âdeath to his human spiritâ since he was no longer âa living manâ (p. 27). He faces Patroclusâ death with the same warrior traits of aggression, cruelty and vengefulness, depriving himself of any ability to humanely mourn his close friendâs death.
Furthermore, Achilles grieves for his mother in the opening passages of Ransom . During this time of loss, his mother symbolises Achillesâ need to be nurtured. The imagery of the sea surface as a âbellyâ and âa membrane stretched to a fine transparencyâ (p. 3) represents his motherâs pregnancy where he âhad hung curled in a dream of pre-existenceâ for ânine changes of the moonâ â or in other words, nine months of pregnancy. Achilles is characterised as a foetus, for his position is âchin down, shoulders hunchedâ as though he is inside a womb. Although Achilles is a fighter, he hides the fact that he wishes to be ârocked and comfortedâ by his mother, thus demonstrating that even beneath the surface of a cold-hearted warrior, the current of human emotions can cripple a manâs confident veneer.

Stories We Tell is a different beast to anything many of you will have encountered previously in your English studies. This blog is a continuation of the above Stories We Tell YouTube video so make sure you watch it first!
With interviews, archival footage, extradiegetic film and sound elements alongside recreated scenes, the documentary can seem very overbearing and convoluted upon first viewing. However, once you have a holistic understanding of the text a plethora of opportunity for high-level analysis and discussion presents itself. Stories We Tell is usually studied in the Australian curriculum under Text Response. For a detailed guide on Text Response, check out our Ultimate Guide to VCE Text Response .

Video Transcription
Stories We Tell centres around director Sarah Polley attempting to piece together her family history. While she endeavours to understand who her mother Diane was and finally learn the identity of her biological father, Director Polley also poses a number of questions to viewers surrounding the nature of the truth and the importance of stories in our lives. The film is comprised of interviews with Dianeâs loved ones, home movies from the Polley family, extra-diegetic newspaper clippings, recreated Super 8 footage and excerpts from other productions - all of which contribute to Sarahâs inquisition into the notion of truth, and demonstration that how a story is told can shape how it is received.
NB: I have used âSarahâ when discussing Sarah Polley as a character, and âPolleyâ when describing her as the director.
The idea of the truth, and what comprises it is a constant question being answered through the documentary. Before exploring Polleyâs depiction of the truth, itâs important that we fully understand what the truth is. One definition characterises it as the burden of confirming with fact or reality, and with this in mind it becomes easier to appreciate and analyse the intricacies of Stories We Tell . Polley creates a distinction between universal truths - which are accepted by all as fact, and subjective truths which can vary on individual interpretations. For example, Michael conflicts with the rest of the family while discussing his relationship with Sarah after Dianeâs passing. Mark details Michaelâs obsession with âplaying solitaireâ , Susy depicts the house as one of âcomplete and utter disuseâ , while Joanna observed him âsmoking all dayâ and perceived Sarah as âjust a little kid who nobody was looking after.â Michael, however, has fond memories of his time spent with Sarah - he believed he was âlucky to have her to look after as well as himselfâ , called their time together a âgreat periodâ - eventuating in him feeling âcloser to [Sarah] than any of the other children.â â
Individual recollections of Michaelâs actions and demeanor during this period belong to each storyteller, and form the basis for what they consider to be the âtruthâ regarding Michael and Sarahâs relationship. By presenting contrasting accounts of the same event, Polley reveals her stance on the idea of truth - being that it is entirely subjective and open to interpretation, centred around the perceptions of each individual at any moment in time. It is entirely possible that Michael did âsmoke all dayâ and feel a sense of increased âclose[ness]â with Sarah, but due to the variability of the human memory, this is impossible to state with any certainty - illustrating the fallible nature of universal truths. â
Storytelling
Stories and how they are told are a constant factor during the documentary - beginning with the title, â Stories We Tellâ and concluding with Geoffâs admission that he and Diane did sleep together during their days acting in Montreal. For example, Polleyâs use of the inclusive âweâ signifies her interest in storytelling on a grand scale; not merely the stories she unravels onscreen. As a result, one can argue that her purpose for the documentary extends far beyond the action captured onscreen and in fact involves Polley encouraging others to share their own stories - enabling them to âcreate shape out of messâ as she has done through the presentation of her own family story.
By placing Geoffâs confession at the conclusion of the documentary (and casting doubt on all of the discoveries she has made throughout Stories We Tell) Polley emphasises how storytelling allows a âclearer pictureâ of the past to develop - as he had previously denied any sexual history with Diane, labelling them just friends. As such his admission of a relationship with her symbolises the manner in which the truth can be ârefractedâ over time, leading to many âshifts and fictionsâ while clouding âwhat really happened.â Therefore, Polley reveals how storytelling can provide some semblance of closure to us, in a world where the truth is âephemeralâ and âdifficult to pin down.â
While Polley undoubtedly utilises Stories We Tell to express her views on truth and storytelling, fundamentally it remains a story of the Polley family, and what holds it together. The narrative begins with the âstorytellersâ providing loving, yet somewhat conflicting recollections of Diane as Polley seeks to understand who she was. Family members buoyantly describe her as âinfectiousâ and âenthusiasticâ , while friends paint a more mysterious picture of Diane as a âwoman of secretsâ , alluding to her alleged infidelity. The closeness of the Polley family is evident throughout their discussion of Dianeâs first marriage, universally criticising the outcome of the court case in which she was labeled â unrepentant â for â allow[ing] her desire for a career to overtop her âdomestic dutiesâ - resulting in Diane losing custody of John and Susy, which proved to be a major strain on Diane and the family.
Despite this closeness, Mark expresses his disappointment in Diane following the confirmation of Harry being Sarahâs father - detailing the she âbroke the rulesâ and âbroke a kind of tabooâ when she had the affair. This is the only real example of any member of the family disapproving of Dianeâs past - indicating Polleyâs desire to demonstrate that families are not perfect, and bring their own faults and shortcomings. In spite of this, however, their care the family shows for one another is clearly demonstrated through their interviews with Polley, highlighting to the audience that by staying close, families can better cope with the trauma of losing a loved one and in time, be able to honour their memory by sharing their stories.
Putting it all together
While analysing the themes in isolation can provide a good foundation for success studying Stories We Tell , looking at how they interact and interrelate enables students to demonstrate their higher-order skills. Truth, storytelling and family are intrinsically linked - for example: Polleyâs presentation of conflicting accounts and recollections of Diane demonstrates the complexity of her family, while showcasing her stance on the inability of individuals to find universal truths. As a result of this, the importance of storytelling is highlighted as a means to provide some understanding of our past - and how it affects us in the present and shapes who we are. Including different interpretations of the text and the context in which Polley grew up and created the text can also help to improve your writing to A+ standard - and this will be covered in the blog post that acts as a continuation of this video! *end video*
Following on from the video, the content below is an expansion upon Stories We Tell .
Author views and values
One of the golden rules of A+ essay writing is to understand that everything contained within the text is seen to be a deliberate choice by the author. With this in mind, we can start considering how Polleyâs choice to include certain snippets or position footage in a particular way highlights her views.
The truth is ephemeral - can it ever be known?
Throughout Stories We Tell , Polley continually emphasises the impossibility of knowing a truth with absolute certainty. Her stance is shaped by the clouded nature of her paternity and family history, exemplified within the text by the varying accounts of Dianeâs personality. Portraying her as âinfectiousâ and âenthusiasticâ, Polley captures Diane dancing - cleverly lighting up her face, thus symbolising her warm nature. However, juxtaposing this is Deidreâs assertion that Diane was a âwoman of secretsâ - bolstered by Polleyâs recreation of a covert phone call in which Diane ponders the identity of Sarahâs biological father. Through her presentation of contrasting recollections of her mother, Director Polley showcases the relativity of truth within her own family, inviting the audience to question the meaning of truth in their own lives, highlighting that âyou can never get to an answer.â As a result, Stories We Tell predominantly displays the impossibility of one knowing a singular truth.
Subjective truths can be found
Continuing the theme of ambiguity within her synthetic documentary, Sarah Polley demonstrates that individuals can develop their own interpretations of the truth, in spite of her stance on the validity of singular truths. Within Stories We Tell, Polley illustrates this by depicting the contrasting recollections of Michaelâs relationship with Sarah as a child. Supporting Joannaâs assertion that Sarah was âjust a little kid that nobody was looking afterâ, Polley ironically captures a full shot of Michael in the middle of the couch, portraying him as a distinctive presence in the scene in spite of Joannaâs belief that Michael isnât present in Sarahâs life. Conversely, Michael recalls his time with Sarah as âa great period in [his] lifeâ - a claim reinforced by Polley, via recreated Super 8 footage of the pair assembling a snowman, symbolising their construction of a new beginning following Dianeâs death. Through this interaction, Polley portrays Michael as a compassionate and loving father - juxtaposing this with Joannaâs description, revealing to her audience the ability of individuals to find subjective truths - encouraging them to do so in their own lives in spite of searching for universal truths.
The importance of stories
Building on her depiction of the truth as fallible, Polley thus emphasises our need to tell stories, illustrating how they allow one to better understand themselves, their families and the world around them. Within Stories We Tell, unearthing the âstoryâ of Diane takes centre stage for a majority of the production, and Polley hints towards this goal via her inclusion of Bon Iverâs folk ballad Skinny Love. The line âpour a little salt, we were never hereâ plays on the use of salt to heal wounds - implying that the storytellers aim to âhealâ their pain felt from Dianeâs death via telling âthe whole storyâ they have developed from their memories of her. Moreover, the phrase âwho the hell was Iâ addresses Polleyâs attempt to âform [Diane]â by piecing together the various second hand accounts and layers of connected stories from her loved ones - allowing her to ascertain a clearer understanding of her family history. Polley utilises stories to â[clear] up...the smokeâ in her past,â praising the idea that such tales shed a light on areas of confusion and uncertainty - while also allowing one to â[cope]â and make sense of their heritage. Through her demonstration that stories enable individuals to move past the âsmall and large details that varyâ, Polley prompts the audience to seek more information about their own families, and relay their own family stories.
Throughout the documentary, Polley demonstrates, both explicitly and implicitly, a number of her inherent values. Drawing upon these, referring to them in your essays and (most importantly!) connecting them to your analysis of the text is a great way to get ahead of the pack and maximise your marks both in your sac and the exam.
NB: Much of the excerpts contained here are analysing specific scenes/motifs, and then linking such thinking to the theories listed below. I found this to be a coherent and structured way of including this deeper level of thinking in the publication of my own essays!
Feminist lens on the social values of 1960âs Canada

By depicting extradiegetic footage of Diane singing Ainât Misbehavin, Director Polley provides a feminist commentary on the dominant social values of 1960âs Canada; the lyrics âI walk the streets to balance the sheetsâ and âwhat is an honest girl to doâ metaphorically representing the perception of Diane by the court and wider society - denied âcustodyâ of her children due to her âadultery.â

By inserting a newspaper clipping criticising Dianeâs choice to let her âdesire for a careerâ to supercede her âdomestic dutiesâ, Polley illustrates the difficulties faced by aspirational women in such a restrictive society - condemning the treatment of her mother while calling on female viewers to continually campaign for equality of opportunity in their societies.
Outlining the fact that Diane was not considered âladylikeâ, Polley sardonically ridicules the âcontrollingâ nature of such rigid gender stereotypes and their effect on Diane losing her children - exhibiting her desire to empower her female audience to âsave [themselves]â from similar situations and âma[ke] a choice to live.â
Postmodernist interpretation of the truth
As Iâve discussed at length in this blog post, Polley continually reminds us as an audience that the truth is not set in stone and is in fact a flexible, relative concept. Such a line of thinking directly correlates to the postmodernism literary theory - notable for being hostile to absolutes such as truth, and not creating a text in isolation. â
Polley continually blurs the line between fact and fiction within Stories We Tell - an ode to the postmodernist school of thought she is following. Depicting recreated Super-8 footage capturing herself directing the actress Rebecca Jenkins who âplaysâ the âroleâ of the younger Diane, Polley seeks to somewhat deceive her audience as to what is real and what is derivative - prompting the audience to âconsider what was real and what wasnât⊠in their own minds.â As a result, she seeks to promote the validity of the postmodernist critical theory, prompting philosophical discussions between individuals about the variability of memory and whether any absolute truths can ever be truly known.
Intertextuality
Another feature of postmodernism in literature is the relationship between one text to another. In her creation of Stories We Tell , Sarah Polley exacerbates this relationship, including a number of extradiegetic elements such as newspaper clippings, emails, songs and segments from other productions in order to add greater meaning to the documentary. For example, Polley presents her email exchange with Harry, illustrating her desire for the story to include âeveryoneâs point of viewâ, as it is only then that the âwhole pictureâ can be established. While reciting the email aloud, Polley delicately pauses when articulating that the story must include â[her] experience, [Harryâs] experienceâ and her âfamilyâs [experience]â, emphasising her desire to give âequal weightâ to all versions of the story.
Different Interpretations
In my experience studying the text, this documentary can be interpreted two ways:
1. as a self-reflective memoir following the journey of Sarah finding her father and gaining a more mature understanding of her mother, or;
2. A philosophical and, at-times political commentary on the way stories are told and the nature of truth. Both interpretations (and others you find or develop through your own viewing) are great to use in your writing, just ensure that they are relevant to the specific prompt/idea you are discussing!
Let's dive into each a little further:
1. Stories We Tell is a commentary on how stories are told - specifically, how the way a story is told can shape how it is received and the meaning one can draw from it
Upon first glance this point may seem rather convoluted, and several viewings of the text are necessary to fully engage with this line of thinking. Essentially, this centres around the idea that the different forms, mediums and extradiegetic elements present in the documentary can significantly influence how we as an audience react to the story that is being told.
The best way to explain this is to acknowledge the level of credibility and the associations attached to each individual medium used to tell the story.
For example, what impact does the newspaper clipping (detailing her custody battle and fight for equality in a restrictive society) have on our sympathy for Diane? Does the sense of credibility and validity drawn from an upstanding publication such as a newspaper elicit a greater sense of trust and acceptance of fact from viewers - therefore making us as an audience more inclined to view her in a positive light? Conversely, are viewers more accepting of Dianeâs affair with Harry following testimony from those who witnessed her unhappiness with Michael first hand - her friends and family?
Moreover, in spite of her declaration that âequal weightâ will be given to all experiences, does Polleyâs use of Michael as narrator and his constant presence in the formal setting of a recording studio provide his version greater significance than Harryâs - who notwithstanding his involvement in the story as Sarahâs biological father, is resigned to providing his interview somewhat informally in a home setting, in the same vein as the rest of the storytellers?
Feel free to apply this line of thinking to other aspects of the text - such a deeper engagement with the philosophical ideas of the text are far more likely to score highly, as opposed to shallow pieces that merely discuss the storytellers in isolation - and not what they represent.
2. Stories We Tell is a commentary on the ephemeral nature of truth
The notion of truth seems to be just as much of a theme through this blog as it is in the documentary!
This is for good reason, however, as I found this to be the primary theme running through Stories We Tell , through the journey to discover Sarahâs paternity, the affair and conflict over whose story it is to tell. Truth affects a number of other ideas within the texts, such as storytelling, intertextuality, the variability of memory, production and identity - thus, using the ephemeral nature of the truth to explain why certain ambiguities exist in Harryâs âfaultyâ recollections, for example is an excellent way to show a greater depth of understanding of the interrelationships in the documentary.
Essay Topic Breakdown
Essay topic from the 2018 vcaa exam:.
âTo save all hurt, why not leave things as they are?â
Why does Sarah not âleave things as they are?â
Initial thoughts:
This prompt does not ask you to discuss a specific theme or character - instead it guides you toward providing an analysis on Sarah Polleyâs purpose for creating Stories We Tell. While authorial intent should always be included in any text response essay, it is essential that the purpose is central in response to this type of prompt - essentially, providing points of discussion as to why Sarah is unable to âleave things as they are.â
Essay Plan:
1. Unable to leave things as they are - wanted to question the concept of traditional family structures, by contrasting the influence of biological connections and emotional relationships on her development.
I discussed the effect of both Harry and Michael on Sarahâs development - concluding that while both of them had a significant role to play in her becoming the woman she is today, Michaelâs influence was significantly stronger. Polley implies this by giving him a greater voice in the documentary through his role as the narrator.
2. Unable to leave things as they are - wanted to comment on the ephemeral nature of the truth in our lives.
Central to this paragraph is Polleyâs use of recreated Super-8 footage. Using three prime examples (the opening scene with Diane and Michael crossing the bridge, Polley directing the actress that âplays the roleâ of Diane in recreated footage, and the staging of Dianeâs funeral) I aim to display Polleyâs postmodern perspective on the truth and how this is conveyed through her deliberate creation of Stories We Tell.
3. Unable to leave things as they are - Emphasise the importance of storytelling in our lives to gain some understanding of the past.
Due to her depiction of the truth as a âmystery of nothingnessâ, Polley highlights the role that stories play in our lives. Within Stories We Tell, Polley attempts to understand herself by recreating Dianeâs story on screen - allowing her to create âshape out of messâ and form a clearer picture of how she became who she is. Moreover, Polley also reveals how stories enable individuals to maneuver through the âwreckageâ of the truth and ârecreate the past.â
To stand out, itâs important to have a voice. In writing, itâs the expression of your thoughts, beliefs and emotions on the page that gives the reader insight into your own personal opinions and ideas on a topic. Your writerâs voice is unique to you and therefore presents your work as original amongst the multitude of essays examiners receive. In order to find your unique voice, itâs important to pinpoint the ideas that interest you that would allow you to write in the most authentic manner. Your distinctive style of writing and the concepts you present will allow you to stand out amongst your peers and thus, will ensure you reach your optimum standard of work.
Read and Explore
In order to expand your knowledge of a certain text, explore articles and videos that present alternate views. This allows you to not only expand the depth of your ideas but additionally, the opportunity to find opinions that you relate to or those that interest you. The more you explore the ideas that exist, the more you will obtain an inclination about what concepts youâd be willing to write about.
Understand the Characters in Text Response
Although it may be difficult to decipher the motives behind characters or the emotions they are feeling at a certain point in the text, insight into the minds of characters provides you with the opportunity to move beyond a black or white perception of them. Hence, youâll be more inclined to pinpoint certain aspects of the character that you identify with and in turn, feel more confident in writing and presenting a unique perspective on them that distances you from the expected responses.
Themes of a Text
Within a text, there are an abundance of themes and itâs up to you to choose which interest you and which youâd be able to write the most about in order to showcase the depth of your understanding. You may relate to subjects within a text such as grief or betrayal and therefore, when you explore the text focusing on these themes, your writing will reflect your beliefs in an individual way that separates your ideas from your cohorts.
Language Analysis
Whilst language analysis relies on presenting an objective essay on the intention of the author, your voice will be shown more clearly by your chosen techniques and analysis. By pinpointing words or phrases within an article that you feel stand out or interest you within the context of the piece, youâll be more likely to write an in-depth analysis on how the author has used the words or phrases to encourage consideration or prompt guilt as examples rather than provide a short summary of what they have said.
Amongst the thousands of students completing VCE English, itâs important to set yourself apart and demonstrate that youâve got creative and original ideas that bring a new perspective to the text whilst allowing you to enjoy and find interest in Year 12 English.
In your Language Analysis (or Analysing Argument)Â SAC, you will be required to analyse how language is used to persuade in three or more texts. While this may seem a bit daunting at first, it really isnât much harder than a single text analysis once you know how to approach it. Of course, there are multiple ways to tackle this task, but here is just one possible method!
Introduction:
Begin with a sentence that briefly describes the incident that sparked the debate or the nature/context of the debate. Remember to use the background information already provided for you on the task book!
Next, introduce the texts one at a time, including the main aspects for each (eg. title, writer, source, form, tone, contention and target audience). You want to show the examiner that you are comparing the articles, rather than analysing them separately. To do this, use appropriate linking words as you move onto your outline of each new text.
Consider significant features for comparison, for example:
- Is the tone/style the same?
- Is there a different target audience?
- How do their key persuasive strategies differ?
You may choose to finish your introduction with a brief comment on any key difference or similarity.
Sample introduction: The recent return to vinyls and decline in CD sales has sparked discussion about the merits of the two forms of recorded sound. In his feature article, For the Record, published in the monthly magazine Audioworld in June 2015, Robert Tan contends that vinyls, as the more traditional form, are preferable to CDs. He utilises a disparaging tone within his article to criticise CDs as less functional than vinyls. In response to Tanâs article, reader Julie Parker uses a condescending and mocking tone to lampoon Tan for his point of view, in a letter published in the same magazine one month later.
Body paragraphs:
Block structure
Spend the first half of your essay focused on Article 1, then move into Article 2 for the second half of your essay (and, for those doing three articles, the later part of your essay based on Article 3). This structure is the most simple of all, and unfortunately does not offer you ample opportunity to delve into an insightful analysis. Hence, we would not recommend this structure for you. If possible, adopt the Bridge or Integrated structures discussed below.
Bridge structure
Analyse the first text, including any visuals that may accompany it. Students often spend too long on the first text and leave too little time to analyse the remaining texts in sufficient depth, so try to keep your analysis specific and concise! Remember to focus on the effects on the reader, rather than having a broad discussion of persuasive techniques.
Linking is essential in body paragraphs! Begin your analysis of each new text with a linking sentence to enable a smooth transition and to provide a specific point of contrast. Continue to link the texts throughout your analysis, for example, you could compare:
- The techniques of each writer and how these aim to position the reader in different ways.
Often your second and/or third texts will be a direct response to the first, so you could pick up on how the author rebuts or agrees with the arguments of the first text.
Integrated structure
In this type of structure, you will analyse both articles in each body paragraph.

Conclusion:
In Lisa's videos above, she suggests a short and sweet summary in your conclusion by incorporating some quotes from the author's own conclusion.Â
Alternatively, you could opt for a different approach. In your conclusion, aim to focus on how each text differs from the others in terms of the main techniques used by the author, and more importantly, the effect of these techniques on the reader or audience. You should summarise the main similarities and differences of each text without indicating any personal bias (ie. you should not state whether one text might be more or less persuasive than another). For example, a point of comparison could be the audience appeal - will any particular audience group be particularly engaged or offended? Why?
Finally, finish with a sentence suggesting a possible outlook for the issue.

Be proactive. You have to keep switching things up. This means constantly trying new prompts that are more challenging than the last and always trying to find new evidence you can use. Yes, there will always be our go-to pieces of evidence we like to use, like our favourite quote or symbol, but change it up often so that you donât become complacent.
âExtra hack #12 â Unique interpretations
The purpose of develop a unique interpretation of a text or film is so that you can demonstrate originality in your thinking and bring something new to the table that teachers have never come across before. After all, if youâre marking 30 essays in a row, youâd get pretty bored reading the same arguments again and again, wouldnât you? Try to view the text from different lenses â feminist, Marxist, post-colonial perspective â and these will offer you new ways of interpreting the story.
Extra hack #13 â FOCUS
Some books can be very long (and no, weâre not talking about donât need to go into detail with every single passage. Instead, have a selection of passages throughout the book that you know really well. Itâs much better having an in-depth understanding of fewer passages, but produce a sound essay than to have a superficial overview of the book and struggle to write much at all!
English is not easy, but it doesnât need to be hard either. Adopt only a few of these hacks and see your improvement in English â they really do work! Keep it up!

Let me guess. Itâs 10 pm on Sunday night and you havenât written a thing. Donât worry. Weâve all been there.
Letâs help each other. Iâll help you write a good essay, and youâll help me feel like Iâve learned something in the course of high school.
Here we go.
Step One: Figure out what you know, and what you donât. (15 mins)
Start by acknowledging that you may need to do some research in order to write an A-worthy paper. Yuck. I know.
First off, grab a piece of notebook paper or your iPad and write down your topic at the top of the page. Write down ten things that you know about that topic. No need to be very detailed. You know it already, right?
Then, make a new column and write down five things you donât know about your topic. Anything you arenât clear on goes here. Definitions you arenât sure of, details, anything.
Step Two: Pick a stance, any stance. (5 mins)
Really. Just pick one. Anything.
You donât even have to agree with it! (Wow, look at the options that just popped up, eh?)
Try to pick something that works best with what you already know and avoids all the things you donât. Normally, research would be a great idea (and you might still need it), but weâre on a time crunch. So try not to go against the grain if you can help it.
Step Three: Look at your lists and figure out if you have all the information you need to backup your position, or if you need to research first. (max: 30 mins)
Donât be afraid to admit that you need to learn more before you start. It will make the writing portion go faster if you catch it early. So look at your lists. You might be lucky; maybe you picked a position where you already know all your evidence. If youâre not so lucky, give yourself 30 minutes to do some research on Google. Take notes. Youâll thank me later.
Step Four: Make a quick, rough outline of your essay. (20 mins)
Follow this format as much as you need to (or use your own if you prefer, but this might be faster).
- Topic and position (your thesis, for those of us who stayed awake in freshman English class)
- First piece of evidence and explanation of its significance
- Second piece of evidence and explanation of its significance
- Third piece of evidence and explanation of its significance
- Restatement of thesis and Cliff Notes version of your three pieces of evidence
Those are your five paragraphs. Use bullet points for most of them, but it might be helpful to write out your thesis ahead of time to make sure your choice of evidence is as effective as possible.
Make sure you have a good idea of what you are intending to write about before you open Google Docs.
Step Five: Write. (1 hour)
If writing this takes you longer than 60 minutes, youâre overthinking it. Consider your goal just to write something semi-articulate on the page. Donât overthink it. You can always edit later.
You might find it helpful to just start by writing consistently for thirty minutes, and then going back and refining what youâve written before moving on. But really, donât overthink it.
Donât worry about transitioning between paragraphs yet. Weâll get to that.
Step Six: Add transitions and fluff up the page. (30 mins)
Go through and read your essay out loud twice, editing as you see errors. There is psychological proof that you catch more typos when you read your work out loud, so donât shortcut it.
As you read, add transitional sentences in between paragraphs. If you arenât good at that, donât worry about it too much. I canât teach you how to write a good transition sentence in less than a paragraph. Work on that skill later. Right now, just focus on fluffing up your paragraphs a little. Add in synonyms (ones that you already know - donât open up Dictionary.com) and transition words like âhowever,â âregardless,â âin fact,â etc etc. Hereâs a good reference list.
Step Seven: Consult your rubric. (max: 20 mins)
Youâll thank me later. If anything obvious stands out, allow yourself 15 minutes to fix it. Donât stress; whatever you have written right now in this moment is still better than nothing.
Step Eight: Accept that it wonât be perfect, and move on. (0 seconds if youâre really good. 17 years if youâre me).
Anything is better than an F. Do your best and be satisfied with how effectively you worked under a time crunch. Youâre awesome.

25 beatles lyrics: your go-to guide for every situation, the best lines from the fab four.
For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast âBirthdayâ on anyoneâs birthday. I knew all of the words to âBack In The U.S.S.Râ by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. Iâm not someone to âfangirlâ but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

The End- Abbey Road, 1969
The sun is up, the sky is blue, it's beautiful and so are you

Though I know I'll never lose affection, for people and things that went before. I know I'll often stop and think about them. In my life, I love you more
In My Life- Rubber Soul, 1965
While these are my 25 favorites, there are quite literally 1000s that could have been included. The Beatles' body of work is massive and there is something for everyone. If you have been living under a rock and haven't discovered the Fab Four, you have to get musically educated. Stream them on Spotify, find them on iTunes or even buy a CD or record (Yes, those still exist!). I would suggest starting with 1, which is a collection of most of their #1 songs, or the 1968 White Album. Give them chance and you'll never look back.
14 Invisible Activities: Unleash Your Inner Ghost!
Obviously the best superpower..
The best superpower ever? Being invisible of course. Imagine just being able to go from seen to unseen on a dime. Who wouldn't want to have the opportunity to be invisible? Superman and Batman have nothing on being invisible with their superhero abilities. Here are some things that you could do while being invisible, because being invisible can benefit your social life too.
1. "Haunt" your friends.
Follow them into their house and cause a ruckus.
2. Sneak into movie theaters.
Going to the cinema alone is good for your mental health , says science
Considering that the monthly cost of subscribing to a media-streaming service like Netflix is oft...
Free movies...what else to I have to say?
3. Sneak into the pantry and grab a snack without judgment.
Late night snacks all you want? Duh.
4. Reenact "Hollow Man" and play Kevin Bacon.
America's favorite son? And feel what it's like to be in a MTV Movie Award nominated film? Sign me up.
5. Wear a mask and pretend to be a floating head.
Just another way to spook your friends in case you wanted to.
6. Hold objects so they'll "float."
"Oh no! A floating jar of peanut butter."
7. Win every game of hide-and-seek.
Just stand out in the open and you'll win.
8. Eat some food as people will watch it disappear.
Even everyday activities can be funny.
9. Go around pantsing your friends.
Even pranks can be done; not everything can be good.
10. Not have perfect attendance.
You'll say here, but they won't see you...
11. Avoid anyone you don't want to see.
Whether it's an ex or someone you hate, just use your invisibility to slip out of the situation.
12. Avoid responsibilities.
Chores? Invisible. People asking about social life? Invisible. Family being rude? Boom, invisible.
13. Be an expert on ding-dong-ditch.
Never get caught and have the adrenaline rush? I'm down.
14. Brag about being invisible.
Be the envy of the town.
But don't, I repeat, don't go in a locker room. Don't be a pervert with your power. No one likes a Peeping Tom.
Good luck, folks.
19 Lessons I'll Never Forget from Growing Up In a Small Town
There have been many lessons learned..
Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
1. The importance of traditions.
Sometimes traditions seem like a silly thing, but the fact of it is that it's part of who you are. You grew up this way and, more than likely, so did your parents. It is something that is part of your family history and that is more important than anything.
2. How to be thankful for family and friends.
No matter how many times they get on your nerves or make you mad, they are the ones who will always be there and you should never take that for granted.
3. How to give back.
When tragedy strikes in a small town, everyone feels obligated to help out because, whether directly or indirectly, it affects you too. It is easy in a bigger city to be able to disconnect from certain problems. But in a small town those problems affect everyone.
4. What the word "community" really means.
Along the same lines as #3, everyone is always ready and willing to lend a helping hand when you need one in a small town and to me that is the true meaning of community. It's working together to build a better atmosphere, being there to raise each other up, build each other up, and pick each other up when someone is in need. A small town community is full of endless support whether it be after a tragedy or at a hometown sports game. Everyone shows up to show their support.
5. That it isn't about the destination, but the journey.
People say this to others all the time, but it takes on a whole new meaning in a small town. It is true that life is about the journey, but when you're from a small town, you know it's about the journey because the journey probably takes longer than you spend at the destination. Everything is so far away that it is totally normal to spend a couple hours in the car on your way to some form of entertainment. And most of the time, you're gonna have as many, if not more, memories and laughs on the journey than at the destination.
6. The consequences of making bad choices.
Word travels fast in a small town, so don't think you're gonna get away with anything. In fact, your parents probably know what you did before you even have a chance to get home and tell them. And forget about being scared of what your teacher, principle, or other authority figure is going to do, you're more afraid of what your parents are gonna do when you get home.
7. To trust people, until you have a reason not to.
Everyone deserves a chance. Most people don't have ill-intentions and you can't live your life guarding against every one else just because a few people in your life have betrayed your trust.
8. To be welcoming and accepting of everyone.
While small towns are not always extremely diverse, they do contain people with a lot of different stories, struggle, and backgrounds. In a small town, it is pretty hard to exclude anyone because of who they are or what they come from because there aren't many people to choose from. A small town teaches you that just because someone isn't the same as you, doesn't mean you can't be great friends.
9. How to be my own, individual person.
In a small town, you learn that it's okay to be who you are and do your own thing. You learn that confidence isn't how beautiful you are or how much money you have, it's who you are on the inside.
10. How to work for what I want.
Nothing comes easy in life. They always say "gardens don't grow overnight" and if you're from a small town you know this both figuratively and literally. You certainly know gardens don't grow overnight because you've worked in a garden or two. But you also know that to get to the place you want to be in life it takes work and effort. It doesn't just happen because you want it to.
11. How to be great at giving directions.
If you're from a small town, you know that you will probably only meet a handful of people in your life who ACTUALLY know where your town is. And forget about the people who accidentally enter into your town because of google maps. You've gotten really good at giving them directions right back to the interstate.
12. How to be humble .
My small town has definitely taught me how to be humble. It isn't always about you, and anyone who grows up in a small town knows that. Everyone gets their moment in the spotlight, and since there's so few of us, we're probably best friends with everyone so we are as excited when they get their moment of fame as we are when we get ours.
13. To be well-rounded.
Going to a small town high school definitely made me well-rounded. There isn't enough kids in the school to fill up all the clubs and sports teams individually so be ready to be a part of them all.
14. How to be great at conflict resolution.
In a small town, good luck holding a grudge. In a bigger city you can just avoid a person you don't like or who you've had problems with. But not in a small town. You better resolve the issue fast because you're bound to see them at least 5 times a week.
15. The beauty of getting outside and exploring.
One of my favorite things about growing up in a rural area was being able to go outside and go exploring and not have to worry about being in danger. There is nothing more exciting then finding a new place somewhere in town or in the woods and just spending time there enjoying the natural beauty around you.
16. To be prepared for anything.
You never know what may happen. If you get a flat tire, you better know how to change it yourself because you never know if you will be able to get ahold of someone else to come fix it. Mechanics might be too busy , or more than likely you won't even have enough cell service to call one.
17. That you don't always have to do it alone.
It's okay to ask for help. One thing I realized when I moved away from my town for college, was how much my town has taught me that I could ask for help is I needed it. I got into a couple situations outside of my town where I couldn't find anyone to help me and found myself thinking, if I was in my town there would be tons of people ready to help me. And even though I couldn't find anyone to help, you better believe I wasn't afraid to ask.
18. How to be creative.
When you're at least an hour away from normal forms of entertainment such as movie theaters and malls, you learn to get real creative in entertaining yourself. Whether it be a night looking at the stars in the bed of a pickup truck or having a movie marathon in a blanket fort at home, you know how to make your own good time.
19. To brush off gossip.
It's all about knowing the person you are and not letting others influence your opinion of yourself. In small towns, there is plenty of gossip. But as long as you know who you really are, it will always blow over.
Grateful Beyond Words: A Letter to My Inspiration
I have never been so thankful to know you..
I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
You have taught me that you don't always have to strong. You are allowed to break down as long as you pick yourself back up and keep moving forward. When life had you at your worst moments, you allowed your friends to be there for you and to help you. You let them in and they helped pick you up. Even in your darkest hour you showed so much strength. I know that you don't believe in yourself as much as you should but you are unbelievably strong and capable of anything you set your mind to.
Your passion to make a difference in the world is unbelievable. You put your heart and soul into your endeavors and surpass any personal goal you could have set. Watching you do what you love and watching you make a difference in the lives of others is an incredible experience. The way your face lights up when you finally realize what you have accomplished is breathtaking and I hope that one day I can have just as much passion you have.
SEE MORE: A Letter To My Best Friend On Her Birthday
The love you have for your family is outstanding. Watching you interact with loved ones just makes me smile . You are so comfortable and you are yourself. I see the way you smile when you are around family and I wish I could see you smile like this everyday. You love with all your heart and this quality is something I wished I possessed.
You inspire me to be the best version of myself. I look up to you. I feel that more people should strive to have the strength and passion that you exemplify in everyday life. You may be stubborn at points but when you really need help you let others in, which shows strength in itself. I have never been more proud to know someone and to call someone my role model. You have taught me so many things and I want to thank you. Thank you for inspiring me in life. Thank you for making me want to be a better person.
Waitlisted for a College Class? Here's What to Do!
Dealing with the inevitable realities of college life..
Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.
This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
Don't freak out
This is a rule you should continue to follow no matter what you do in life, but is especially helpful in this situation.
Email the professor
Around this time, professors are getting flooded with requests from students wanting to get into full classes. This doesn't mean you shouldn't burden them with your email; it means they are expecting interested students to email them. Send a short, concise message telling them that you are interested in the class and ask if there would be any chance for you to get in.
Attend the first class
Often, the advice professors will give you when they reply to your email is to attend the first class. The first class isn't the most important class in terms of what will be taught. However, attending the first class means you are serious about taking the course and aren't going to give up on it.
Keep attending class
Every student is in the same position as you are. They registered for more classes than they want to take and are "shopping." For the first couple of weeks, you can drop or add classes as you please, which means that classes that were once full will have spaces. If you keep attending class and keep up with assignments, odds are that you will have priority. Professors give preference to people who need the class for a major and then from higher to lower class year (senior to freshman).
Have a backup plan
For two weeks, or until I find out whether I get into my waitlisted class, I will be attending more than the usual number of classes. This is so that if I don't get into my waitlisted class, I won't have a credit shortage and I won't have to fall back in my backup class. Chances are that enough people will drop the class, especially if it is very difficult like computer science, and you will have a chance. In popular classes like art and psychology, odds are you probably won't get in, so prepare for that.
Remember that everything works out at the end
Life is full of surprises. So what if you didn't get into the class you wanted? Your life obviously has something else in store for you. It's your job to make sure you make the best out of what you have.

Table of Contents
At the outset, essay writing seems like simply sitting down on a desk with a computer and a word processor to churn out perfect words. This is not only incomplete but misleading to novice writers and students who are new to the vocation of essay writing.
Essay writing is about thinking of a perfect topic, doing research on it, and then writing and editing your heart out. Depending on the scope and depth of the topic and the expertise of the writer, each of these processes can take hours, if not days.
But we have come to the fore with a brilliant solution to beat the time and help students come out triumphant. In this post, we will cover a simple yet effective plan to write a perfect essay in 3 hours or less.
Are 3 Hours Enough For Essay Writing?
This question is not too simple after all. It depends on who you are asking and when you are asking. For a professional essay writer with years of experience and expertise, it is not only possible but plausible to come up with a topic and be done with the essay as soon as possible. However, if you ask a student in high school or early years of college, it will run a brutal chill down his spine and make him shudder.
Teachers often provide ample time for students to write essays. This time ranges somewhere between a few days to even a few weeks. So, why would a writer ever have to write an essay in 3 hours or less? Because students often do not get to finish the work until the due date is almost there.
Doing The Heavy Lifting On Your Own
In the face of the crucial task of writing and even doing so in a constrained time frame, students are often tempted to roll their sleeves and face the task head-on. This is a noble gesture but it can cost them precious grades and even make them subject to ridicule and humiliation. Simply, they do not possess the tools and training to come up with a custom essay in 3 hours or less that can wow the instructors and help them secure maximum scores. This leads to the second course of action that is not only easy but also ensures success with a money-back guarantee.
Outsourcing The Task To Professionals
Another way around getting a well-written essay without writing yourself is hiring professionals to do the task for you. In this scenario, you need to place an order with PerfectEssay with all the requirements and requisites of your order. You can choose your own time and check the price accordingly before making the payment. Once your order is paid for, it will be activated and the team of writers will start working on it. By dividing the sub-tasks of essay writing such as researching, outlining, writing, and editing, they will deliver the finished product before the deadline to your inbox.
How To Write An Essay In 3 Hours
A timer is your friend, set with different intervals. It can tell you how much time you have and how much is gone, along with what you have done in between. There is no point in getting a dedicated clock for this. You can do all that on your smartphone but make sure you turn off the notifications on it so that you will not be distracted.
Picking on the earlier note, smartphones are the biggest distractions against productivity these days. Before sitting down to write good prose, it is best to either turn off the device or turn off all the notifications. Social media and messages can tempt the student to take a quick peek which could last for several minutes. Also, an open window to the street can distract, so remove them all!
When we say the easy topic, it does not mean that you choose a topic that is almost too easy and primitive for your level of academics. An easy topic is one for which the relevant data is easily available and that is simple or debatable enough to make sense in school or college. The internet is the best source for choosing a topic.
This is a pro tip that only professional writers know. When you research and outline at the same time and quickly, you set the depth, tone, and scope of your essay without consciously spending time and effort. This streamlines the process of writing and editing for you. Keep in mind that primary sources are the best to add.
Many students make the mistake of writing the text in multiple intervals. This is not only counterproductive for the whole process, but it also burns through the precious time that writers could have saved for editing and proofreading. The best way to counter this problem is to write the content in one go and then review it later on. There will be errors and omissions but they will be rectified.
No matter how thoughtfully and carefully you have gone through the first draft of writing the essay, it will have mistakes that can hurt the overall quality of your essay gravely. To counter that, it is best to set a phase of dedicated reviewing and editing for the essay. You can rely on automated tools or assign the task of editing to a friend or family member.
Editing A Long Essay Fast
Editing and proofreading are essential parts of the essay writing process. Before submitting your essay written in 3 hours or less, it is necessary to have some time set aside to fine-tune and tweak the text. In this section, we will share two of the best tips that can help writers finish their essays quickly and superbly.
Eliminate Grammatical & Syntactical Errors
Grammatical and syntactical errors are the most common in essays written by students and novice writers. This is the inevitability of the process that they need to embrace. The best way to tackle this issue is by writing the essay quickly and then revisiting the text to eliminate the issues and errors in the text. Automated tools such as Grammarly and Hemingway Editor can solve this problem for writers by pointing out errors and suggesting corrections.
Conclude The Essay On A High Note
The conclusion of an essay is one of its most important sections. But many students make the mistake of simply winging it instead of thinking it through. Readers will read it in the end and probably remember most of its text. Thatâs why the essay should be concluded on a high note as it can leave a lasting impact on the minds of the readers. The best way to do this is by relying on catchy one-liners and statements.

Final Thoughts
Essay writing is about going through the existing knowledge and the problems of our existence and coming up with new and unique solutions. For the sake of excellence, students are asked to write essays of different types, including descriptive, narrative, expository, and argumentative ones. When they have ample time to write them down, there is no apparent challenge or problem to it. However, in the case of limited time, things need to be challenged and covered in long leaps.

The next article explains How to Write a 3 Paragraph Essay , gives many examples, and explains how it is put together and what its goal is. Beginner writers may find the three-paragraph essay useful because it has the same framework as a longer essay without being as long. Advanced writers can learn how to write concisely by going to Researchwritings.com and reading about new writing methods.
3 Paragraph Essay
The 3-paragraph essay is just a study or interpretation of a piece of literature. It has an introduction, a body, and an end. It normally looks at its topic from a limited or personal point of view. Usually, these types of essays are used in schools.
In a three-paragraph essay, the opening explains what the essay is about and makes a case for why the reader should read it. In the body of the essay, the author talks about the topic and talks about its pros and cons. In a 3-paragraph essay, we had to start with a topic line and then back it up with one or two words. Also, we had to write a line evaluating this data in light of your case or topic sentence, and the last paragraph of our 3-paragraph essay had to go into more detail about its importance.
Essay Length
Usually, an essay with three paragraphs is a short piece of writing. Most of the time, these writings have between 500 and 750 words. These essays are written in a way that makes them fit the framework of an essay. They are between 300 and 600 words long. They have a beginning, a main part, and an end. The only way to tell these pieces apart is by their main body, which gives a thorough defense of the subject.
How to Write a 3-Paragraph Essay
If you want to compose a perfect three-paragraph essay, then the following principles must be followed: The steps are:
Plan ahead: think about how you will present your points. It is the process of choosing what to put in your essay. It makes points that are clear and make sense. So, a well-planned structure makes it easier for the reader to understand the points.
- Making a draft (write down all the ideas you have and start to explain them) Mind mapping is another name for this process. When an author writes, he or she puts his or her ideas into complete sentences and paragraphs.
- The first paragraph of the paper. The information in the body paragraph must be clear and connected to the topic. The body paragraph needs to talk about the topic’s points of view and how you feel about them.
- The end comes after the main part of the paragraph. The end of the essay should be short and give an overview of the whole thing. It could also have your thoughts about the subject.
- To revise (revise) , you have to read the line you just wrote carefully and look for mistakes you made while writing the essay.
- Editing: Write down all of the mistakes you made while writing the essay and fix them to make it better.
How to Structure a three Paragraph Essay
Introduction.
In the introduction, you must talk about the subject’s past and how people think about it now. Each opening paragraph must start with a theme sentence, also called a thesis statement. A thesis statement is one sentence that says what the paper is about and what the main point is. The second line builds on the first to explain more about the main point being made. The importance of your point needs to be brought out. In the third and final line, you should give a brief summary of the information you plan to present in the body and how you plan to present it. For example, if you were writing a 3-paragraph essay on global warming, the beginning might look like this:
Introduction Example Human activities have been damaging our ecosystem for centuries, and the result is global warming due to rising carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. It is impossible to turn a blind eye to global warming, and urgent action is required to combat the problem.
In the main part of the essay, the writer must describe the topic and talk about its pros and cons, as well as any consequences or effects. The number of sentences in the body of your essay should match the number of points you want to make. You should spend at least three lines on each of your points to show that you understand it well. The main body of a three-paragraph essay would look something like this:
Body Paragraphs Example Carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants in the earth’s atmosphere have increased due to human activities, including power plant emissions, transportation, and deforestation. Global warming, caused by greenhouse gases that trap solar radiation in the atmosphere, has the potential to alter the entire planet’s topography, uprooting communities, inundating entire nations, and wiping out countless species. Global warming has many direct effects, one of which is more extreme weather. The negative consequences of global warming on Earth’s ecosystems are numerous and will only increase. Cutting down additional trees should be prohibited, and afforestation should be promoted as the best way to protect the planet from further destruction. Get started by planting trees close to your home or place of work, then attend events and share the message about the value of tree planting with others.
In the third and last line of your essay, you should say what you think about what you’ve written. Start by putting the topic sentence in your own words. Summarize the main points, then ask the reader to think about them. In the end, the author must say what he thinks about the subject. As an example:
Conclusion Example As long as humans continue to release greenhouse gases, global warming will increase and cause further ecological devastation. Stopping global warming is crucial, and we all share responsibility for doing so. Get started by planting trees close to your home or place of work, then attend events and share the message about the value of tree planting with others. The damage can’t be undone, but it can be stopped from spreading.

3 Paragraph Essay Examples
A few examples of the best three-paragraph essays are:
Example #1 >> Artificial Intelligence: Its Pros and Cons
AI is becoming one of the areas that is growing the fastest in the world. It helps make our lives easier and gives us different chances that we can use for the good of all people, but we also know that everything made by people in this universe has both pros and cons. In the following article, the pros and cons of artificial intelligence are talked about.
Here are some of the good things about AI: It’s a big part of how people in our society live their lives. Aside from that, it lets you do more than one thing at once and makes it possible to do less work with the same tools. It also means getting things done without spending a lot of money, and we can use it all the time without stopping. Aside from the good things it does for welfare and society, it has a lot of bad effects that are not only bad for computers but also cause a lot of trouble for people. AI technologies aren’t making people any better, and they’re making them more lazy every day. Aside from this, being able to make a machine that can make people smarter is a big challenge, takes a lot to work on, and is also causing people to lose their jobs. It was all made by people, so it depends on the skills and abilities of different people. This is one of the biggest problems with this technology because it is not creative. It can only do what we want it to do or answer the questions we are tired of asking. Other than that, it is useless. Humans are losing their jobs because artificial technology methods are taking over.
Artificial intelligence is a change in technology that has more bad effects than good ones and could endanger the world. The rise of artificial intelligence makes sure that people are setting up traps that will lead to their own deaths. AI is giving us a lot of great chances, but if we don’t take care of it, it will be hard for us to stay alive, and it could even kill us.
Example #2: Exhibition
An exhibition is the display or presentation of works of art or items of interest to the public. It also focuses on the identification and interpretation of collective things. The exhibition was first introduced to the public in the 19 th century, but before the 19 th century, there had been different temporary exhibitions, especially the display of new arts in the major cities introduced to the public in the 19th century, but before the 19th century, there had been different temporary exhibitions, especially display of new arts in the major cities. The Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufacturing, and Commerce held the first modern public exhibition on April 21, 1760, in London. It was the first in a series of fine arts exhibitions held by the institution, later known as the Society of Arts. One of the most famous exhibitions was the Academie des Beaux-Arts of the Paris Salon, which was started in 1667 and opened to the public in 1737. The following essay is going to give a brief description of exhibitions.
Exhibition planning is an engaging process. They are usually the experiences of people; they provide communication of ideas, information, feelings, and values. Exhibitions usually occur within cultural, educational, or many other places, which include museums, art galleries, parks, libraries, or different exhibition centers. It is an integrative and multidisciplinary process that often combines architecture, interior design, graphic design, multimedia, lighting, audio, technology, and other disciplines to create a complex narrative around a topic In its most general sense, it is an organized presentation and display of selected items. There is no set method for planning an exhibition, although there are general guidelines that professionals follow. These guidelines include an estimate of how many organizational accommodations are possible. It is because exhibition proponents are strongly encouraged by the partners, and they must involve several co-organizers. It also includes publicizing the exhibition and informing people about it through advertisements or distributing notices.
Exhibitions usually provide platforms for your product. It is usually the advertisement of your product to the general public and the acknowledgment of the benefits of the product. It provides the opportunity for potential buyers to meet a wide range of sellers in a single location.
Example #3: Fashion
In the last few decades, fashion has become a worldwide phenomenon. Fashion has always been an important part of human life. Fashion styles have changed over the years. Because younger people care more about how they look on the outside, the fashion industry is driven by people who want to look and act like the outside world has changed.
When styles change, people wear new clothes and act in new ways. One way that the modern world is always changing is in the fashion business. The first step to looking chic is to know what’s in style. The modern sense of fashion gives people another way to show who they are. Styles can change from one season to the next or in reaction to a certain need. In the United States, fashion is the lifeblood of the glamorous world, and you could even say that the glamorous world inspires and guides fashion itself. Trends change every day because they are based on styles in the business world, which in turn depend on a glamorous world. Fashion has an effect on both physical society and how people talk to each other online. The ever-changing world of fashion gives us a nice break from our daily lives by giving us ideas for how to look good, be confident, and be in step with the times.
So, in conclusion, the young people of today are so affected by the glitzy fashion industry that it shows in every part of their appearance, including their clothes, hair, accessories, language, and attitude. The way we dress is an interesting part of our lives. It makes us feel good about ourselves and like we belong in the world. Fashion is a big part of what makes culture what it is today. Because of this, each of us learns something new. People’s attitudes, personalities, ways of dressing and acting, and even their hobbies and pleasures can all be seen as examples of fashion.Â
Example #4: Pros And Cons Of Social Media
Social media has become very popular in recent years because it is easy to use and easy to get to. Social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. are making it easier for people to connect with each other. Yes, thanks to social media, you can quickly connect with anyone, anywhere in the world, with just a tap of your finger. The kids of today are among the people who use social media the most.
There are a lot of good things about using social media. Most importantly, it is an excellent way to learn. Anyone can get to any and all information with just a few taps. Students can learn about a wide range of topics by using social media. This medium also lets people talk to each other in real time. You can watch a talk in the U.S. from where you are sitting in India. Also, as more people stop reading print media, they are getting their news from social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. It gives you the most up-to-date news about the world around you. As a person learns more about world issues, they become more aware of them. It also helps you get closer to the people who are most important to you. With social media, it doesn’t matter how far away someone is. If you have friends or family in another country, it’s easy and quick to get in touch with them. Above all, it gives young singers who are just starting out a free, big stage to perform on. You can also find out about good job opportunities through social networking. Promoting a trademark is another good thing for businesses. Because of this, social media has become a central place for promoting, and it’s a great place to take photos with clients. Even though social media has clear benefits, it is often seen as a big threat to public safety. When people use social media without limits, bad things can happen. It is dangerous because technology breaks down barriers to dialogue that used to be impossible to get past. When kids share too much online, they make it easy for crooks and hackers to find them and hurt them. Because of this, cyberbullying happens, which can be very bad for anyone’s self-esteem. So, it’s important to keep an eye on the social media status updates that kids mostly make. Next, we’ll talk about things that teens like to do, like social networking. When a student spends more time on social media instead of reading, it hurts their grades. When people spend too much time on social media, they tend to push other people away. Its use spreads false information, which in turn poisons the thoughts of people who would otherwise be peaceful.
In a word, using social networking has both pros and cons. But in the end, it depends on the person. A lot of focus should be put on helping the youth of today find a good balance between doing well in school, being active, and using social media. Like any other drug, spending too much time on social media can lead to bad things. So, it’s up to us to find the right mix and work toward a happy life.
Example #5: Women’s Education
Education for women can be seen as a way to teach them things that will make them feel more valuable and worthy. This knowledge can be taught in a number of different ways. Women’s contributions to society can be seen in their jobs as wives, mothers, sisters, coworkers, nurses, and in many other ways. They are better organized and care more about what other people need. Mothers with more education have more chances to contribute to the progress and wealth of their country, and they can do this with the help of men. This essay will give a brief summary of how important women’s education is to the growth of a country.
A good education can help a community in many ways, such as by making people more employable, increasing their wages, and improving their social standing. It can also open up new opportunities for personal and professional growth. Women’s schooling is important for the progress of society as a whole. When it comes to money and making decisions about their health and careers, women with more schooling are more likely to be in charge of their own lives. Educating women will not only help them become financially independent, but it will also give them the skills they need to take care of their own homes. A mother with a good education knows what she needs to do and has the tools to raise good people. She gives birth to children who are driven and have goals. Getting women educated is very important if we want to stop the violence that still happens to them in many parts of the world. If a woman has a good education, she is much less likely to be sexually assaulted or abused in other ways. Women getting an education has helped get rid of problems like dowry and jobless. Education for women has a big effect on population growth because it gives women the power to make choices about their own health that affect their ability to have children. The rate of literacy in a country can be raised by making sure that as many children as possible have moms who have finished school. Muslims think that going to school is a moral duty. A verse in the Holy Quran and a hadith say that women, like men, should learn more and try to learn more. A mother who has gone to college will always be treated with respect, and other women will look up to her as an example.
The progress of society rests on women being able to go to school. As a way to fix the fact that we aren’t making any progress, it should get our attention on a personal, social, and national level. Governments, civil society groups, and individuals can work together to improve gender equality and remove barriers to higher education for women. If we invest in women’s education, we can make sure that everyone has a more prosperous and fair future.
Example # 6: Poverty
Poverty means that a family can’t provide for itself in terms of food, schooling, a place to live, and clothes. Poverty is shown by not having enough food, not having a place to live, not having good child care, living in a hostile area, and not having enough money for public institutions. The poverty barrier, also called the poverty line, is the very least amount of money a person needs to make in a country to be able to live. In this post, we’ll look at poverty and its effects around the world from a high level.
We say that a person, a family, or a whole community is poor when they don’t have enough money to meet their most basic wants. This means that it is hard to get even the most basic things, like food, clothes, a place to live, and medicine. Poverty keeps happening from one generation to the next. Some of the problems that can happen as a result are sickness, hunger, lying, and not having clean places to live. Poverty has many causes, such as rising prices of living, low wages, unemployment, and not getting enough money from social security. People living below the poverty line are also hurt by climate change, inequality or social injustice, not having enough schooling, not getting enough help from the government, and many other things. A rise in the poverty rate is linked to the number of people with mental sickness, chronic diseases, higher death rates, and a shorter life expectancy. Children make up most of the age group that is the poorest. Poverty needs to be stopped because it hurts human capital and slows down economic growth. There are effective ways to do this. Giving everyone the same rights is the first step to stopping unfairness. Getting people skills and jobs is another way to help them get out of poverty. Those who can’t support themselves and can’t read or write, so that we can give them money.
To sum up, then, what we mean when we say someone is poor is that they don’t have enough money to buy the things they need. A national problem like poverty can’t be fixed by just one person. Effective steps should be taken right away to solve the problem. For people, communities, countries, and economies to grow in a way that is long-lasting and all-encompassing, poverty must be eliminated. This is a requirement for growth in any of these areas.

It’s a great way to find out what’s going on in the world. We learn about current events from reliable source. Newspapers help us learn more about a lot of different things, from politics and culture to the economy and sports. We’ll talk quickly about why it’s important to read the news.
The newspaper is an important way for the people and the government to talk to each other. No matter how small, it all adds up to the whole. It helps us learn more and be better people. Reading the newspaper can help you find a better job. The newspaper tells us about business and job opportunities from different companies, so we can choose the best one. We can also advertise our goods and services in the newspaper with little work. By reading a newspaper, a person will improve their language and grammar the most. You can learn new words and improve your language by reading the newspaper. If someone reads newspapers often, they are likely to have a large and interesting language as well. They have more things in common with other people and can talk about most things more easily. Since you can read a newspaper alone, it keeps us from being bored and lonely. People don’t read newspapers as much as they used to because they can get all the news they need on their phones and computers. This is why newspaper reading is on the slide. Printing newspapers not only lose a lot of paper but is also an inefficient way to spread the news.
The newspaper is a good way to get news at home. Because they gather information and data from all over the world, they are very important to our everyday lives. It has news and opinion about the business world, politics, pop culture, sports, and economics. This practice will help you improve not only as a student but also as a speaker and writer. Because of this, everyone needs to make it a habit to read the newspaper every day.
Example #8: Child Explanation
Exploiting children is bad for them. When a kid or young person is exploited, they are “groomed” with things like gifts, drugs, money, status, and love. In return for doing something illegal, this is sometimes called “child criminal.” When a child abuser threatens to hurt them physically or uses other ways to scare them, the child may feel useless. They might give out a lot of money or valuable things like drugs and other things. In the next essay, the effects of exploiting children and possible answers to the problem are talked about.
There are many ways to take advantage of children. In a practice called “trafficking,” children are sometimes taken from their homes and used for sexual reasons. They can be moved to other parts of the country and hurt physically and sexually. All acts of violence or neglect against children that cause major physical or mental harm or put the child’s life in danger are included here. Bullying and cyberbullying, which usually happen at school, are two of the most common ways to take advantage of children. This also covers a lot of different kinds of abuse, like sexual attacks, domestic violence, and more. About one-fourth of American girls and one-thirteenth of American boys have been abused as children. When a kid is exploited, they are groomed, pressured, or forced to do something they don’t want to do for an adult’s benefit. One way we can help keep our kids safe is to learn about the signs of physical and sexual abuse for ourselves and for other people. Watch over your kids, teach them how to be safe, and give them good advice. These steps could make it much less likely that a child will be abused or neglected.
Abuse and neglect of children have effects on a lot more people than just the close family. To protect children from this danger, preventive steps and legal remedies need to be put in place.

If you have already done your research and created an outline that covers the opinion, you will be posing write what you wanted in one breath. You will do the proofreading and correcting later, but you will be more effective if you write simply by following your thoughts and mind process. Once that is done you should invest the remaining time to check for grammar and spelling mistakes , and correct certain phrases.

How to have a ‘Structure and Flow’ in a good essay?
Everyone knows that an essay should be broken down into an introduction, body and conclusion. But what is written inside these 3 components and HOW it is written makes the difference between an essay fetching average or excellent scores.
Structuring and flow refer to the organisation of the essay and your ideas therein.
![write an essay on three hours Festive offer](https://images.indianexpress.com/2024/06/UPSC_65_970x150_Without_Offer.png)
A good structure is a way of organising information that fits well with the essay topic and the ideas you wish to present in your arguments such that the reader can make sense of the entire write-up without much effort.
Good flow refers to how your arguments and counterarguments connect from one to another such that the reader finds it logically connected and easy to comprehend.
An essay without these elements will appear to be disorganized, jargoned, hard to comprehend and overall, complicated.
Contrary to popular belief, flow and structure are not subjective writing skills that are inborn in good writers but can be learned and improved upon. What follows is a series of structuring techniques that will help you choose the best one for any essay topic you may encounter.
What are different types of structures?Â
1. 2 side face-off:.
This is the oldest trick in the book. While writing the body of the essay, you divide it into arguments and counterarguments. In other words, you compare one side of the debate with the other.
For example:
âThinking is like a game; it does not begin unless there is an opposite teamâ
The body of the essay can be divided into 2 parts- one agreeing with the statement and one disagreeing with it as follows:
Thinking is reciprocal as thought builds on other thoughts. The Socratic method, championed by Socrates, is a testament to this idea. Socrates would go around Athens spreading knowledge by asking questions and inciting dialogue which would lead the conversationist to the point of realization about something new and profound.
Similarly, when Einstein said he was standing on the shoulders of giants, he meant that his theory of relativity was built using many ideas developed by mathematicians and physicists who came before him.
The reciprocal nature of thought helps to improve it by allowing dissent and counterarguments much like a game of chess. An example is the Case study pioneered by Harvard Business School wherein one case is debated upon in detail considering various strategies before arriving at the optimal one.
While dissent and opposition can lead to many a good idea, there are more ways for thought to develop into ideas within human consciousness. Human cognition is too complex to be restricted to one mode of thinking. A Case in point is intuitive or creative thinking that can arise spontaneously without the interlocking of two human intelligences.
For instance, creative geniuses often hit upon their best ideas out of the blue in âEurekaâ moments that seem to arise from within the subconscious mind without the presence of an opponent.
Another example is âthought-experimentsâ used by philosophers that are designed to be introspective exercises that one engages with, with oneself. Thought experiments are indispensable tools for philosophers and physicists to offer insight into a profound problem of logic and metaphysics.
2.Dimensional analysis:
It has become fashionable to break the essay topic into various dimensions such as Social, Cultural, Historical, Economic etc. But this is not a one-size-fits-all method and may or may not work with every essay topic.
âEducation is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in the school…â
While this topic can be written about based on various dimensions such as economic, historical, social etc, it is not necessarily the best structure for it.
Instead, a better way to present the information in this essay topic would have a mix of chronology and analysis in the following way-
We are blank slates when we are born onto which society and culture leave their imprint. Through childhood and adolescence, the education system seeks to put us through a treadmill of learning, hoping for a fully functional human to emerge at the end. Sadly, the world that awaits a young adult after school is often very different from what the education system has imparted.
Memorization, exams, grades and NCERT books amount to nothing in a world driven by start-ups, ChatGPT and Social Media influencersâŠ. Please note that the dimensions such as social, cultural and historical factors can also be mentioned in the body of the essay as supporting content ideas.
In most essay topics, these dimensions are best used to describe the reasons and impact of an issue or debate instead of as just a structure.
3. Timeline and Chronology
Some essay topics are uniquely suited for a chronological structure wherein you take the reader through a historical journey or evolution such as :
âHistory is a series of victories won by the scientific man over the romantic manâ
This topic is about the ancient debate between rationality and idealism. To write well about it, you would have to trace the through major historical intellectual movements such as the Scientific Revolution, the Dark Ages, the Renaissance, etc. While doing so, you could mention how each stage was relevant for rational thinking versus idealism with relevant examples.
While you do so chronologically, remember to also present a balanced approach in your arguments- On every stage, you can mention how rational thinking and idealism have been in a tight relationship, but both have been an integral part of human consciousness representing creativity and logic. You may also mention how this to and fro has enriched human civilisation and led to the development of science and art.
4. Anecdotes and stories
Many students like to start their essays with an anecdote- a personal story or an imaginary one about characters highlighting the debate presented in the essay topic. While this is not a bad strategy, it requires a fair amount of creative writing ability to pull off properly. It is also important to mention that anecdotes are not the most suitable vehicle to comprehensively deal with the essay topic as not all arguments can easily fit into a personal story.
An example of a good use of anecdotal structure is:
âNot all who wander are lostâ
About 2000 years ago, a wandering prince changed the world by questioning the most profound and radical assumptions about human existence. Prince Siddhartha was bathed in luxury and wanted for nothing. But when we saw the naked reality of the world and all its suffering, he could not silence his mind to the questions that we take for granted- why is there suffering and death? If suffering is inevitable then what is the point of life? Is there peace to be found or are we doomed to suffer in this life?
He wandered for years in search of answers, as lost as a soul can be. But in the end, it was his wandering that changed the world forever. When he became the Buddha, he not only found himself but saved millions of others from being lost themselvesâŠ.
Anecdotes can make for good hooks or introductions to an essay but may not serve well to cover the entire body of the essay.
The Essay Exercise
|
| |
1. Use Anecdotes or historical examples in intro 2. 2 side face-offs in body of the essay 3. Balanced conclusion | ||
Start with comparing USSR and USA in the cold war. Preparation for nuclear war and hint at how being pre-emptive is strategic but not always a good thing. | ||
Argument- Counter-argument- | ||
Conclude by saying that we must strike a balance between preparedness and being spontaneous:
|
Important points to note:Â
- You can choose which type of structure to use- there is no single best choice.
- You may use more than 1 type of structure.
- You may use structures for introduction, body and conclusion.

Ben Stiller: Why I Canât Stay Silent About the Suffering in Israel and Gaza
![ISRAEL-PALESTINIAN-CONFLICT-POLITICS-PROTEST Protesters gather during an anti-government rally calling for early elections, outside the Knesset in Jerusalem, on June 18, 2024.](https://api.time.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/israel-gaza-refugees-stiller.jpg?quality=85&w=2400)
W hat a time we are all living through. Like so many people, I have been watching the awful events happening in the Middle East over the last year and trying to determine how to react. I have been seeing the brazen antisemitic incidents in my own city and feeling a mix of anger, fear, and astonishment that we are at this place in our country. Saying nothing at this point feels like I am betraying my own conscience. But what do you say? How does one express the complicated and very real feelings in this scary world of social media, where it seems any sentiment opens you to online vitriol from one side or another? The issues we are dealing with are so nuanced and complicated that short statements cannot in any way express fully what I want to say from my heart. As a public advocate for refugees, Iâve been struggling to reconcile my silence with that work. Please bear with me as I explain. And to be clear, what I say here is my personal view, not that of any organizationâitâs just how I feel.
I was given the opportunity in 2016 to work with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights, and building a better future for people forced to flee their homes because of conflict and persecution. The agency was created to help the millions who fled the Second World War and leads international action to protect refugees, forcibly displaced communities, and stateless people, ensuring that everyone has the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge from violence, persecution, or war at home.
With UNHCR I have visited refugees and those impacted by war and violence in Lebanon, Guatemala, Jordan, Poland, and Ukraine. I visited Lebanon just before the eighth anniversary of the Syrian conflict and met refugee families struggling to survive, among the millions living on the razorâs edge. I went to Kyiv after the full-scale Russian invasion and talked to people whose lives have been upended by this senseless war. Iâve advocated for refugees at the UN and in front of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, imploring the U.S. government not to look away from this global humanitarian crisis. I say this not to toot my own horn, but to explain that for me, if I am to speak out about these issues in these places, I canât ignore the crisis that is front and center in the world right now.
I am Jewish. Iâm also half Irish. My fatherâs mother came to the United States as a refugee from Poland. His fatherâs grandfather came from Ukraine, where over 100,000 Jewish people lost their lives in the ethnic pogroms that preceded the great horror of the Holocaust by just two decades. My motherâs grandparents came from Ireland seeking a better life. They arrived in New York with a surplus of hope and not much else.
My dad served in the U.S. Army at the end of World War II. He met my mom and they got marriedâhe was Jewish, she was Catholic. At the time that was an issue. They dealt with judgment from both sides of their families and the outside world. They turned that tension into humor and based their stand-up comedy act on their ethnic differences, which brought them together â and brought them success.
My mom converted to Judaism when they married. Ours was not a religious household, but we learned the traditions of inclusion and tolerance. After my Bar Mitzvah, I didnât really go back to synagogue too often. But I always felt connected to my heritage, both Irish and Jewish, and valued the bonds I saw formed by both sides of my family. Eventually they came together through my parentsâ love for each other. It was a palpable and beautiful thing I experienced as a child. As a kid growing up surrounded by that love, in New York City in the â70s, I never really experienced antisemitism. Where we find ourselves now is a place I never thought I would be.
Like so many Jews I grieve for those who suffered in the barbaric Hamas attack on October 7 and for those who have suffered as a result of those atrocities . My heart aches for the families who lost loved ones to this heinous act of terrorism and for those anxiously waiting these long months for the return of the hostages still in captivity. Itâs a nightmare. I also grieve for the innocent people in Gaza who have lost their lives in this conflict and those suffering through that awful reality now.
I detest war, but what Hamas did was unconscionable and reprehensible. The hostages have to be freed. Terrorism must be named and fought by all people of conscience on the planet. There is no excuse for it under any circumstances.
I stand with the Israeli people and their right to live in peace and safety. At the same time, I donât agree with all of the Israeli governmentâs choices on how they are conducting the war. I want the violence to end, and the innocent Palestinian people affected by the humanitarian crisis that has resulted to receive the lifesaving aid they need. And I know that many in Israel share this sentiment.
I believe, as many people in Israel and around the world do, in the need for a two-state solution, one that ensures that the Israeli people can live in peace and safety alongside a homeland for the Palestinian people that provides them the same benefits.
I also see a troubling conflation in criticism of the actions of the Israeli government with denunciations of all Israelis and Jewish people. And as a result, we are seeing an undeniable rise in global antisemitism. I am seeing it myself, on the streets of the city I grew up in. It isnât right and must be denounced.
Antisemitism must be condemned whenever it happens and wherever it exists. As should Islamophobia and bigotry of all kinds. There is a frightening amnesia for history in the air. We must remind ourselves that we can only manifest a more hopeful, just, and peaceful future by learning from the past.
Obviously I am no politician or diplomat. I have no solutions for these world conflicts and claim to offer none. I think I, like so many people, am struggling with how to process this all. But as an advocate for displaced people, I do believe this war must end. As I write this, there are about 120 million people all over the world who have been displaced by conflicts. In the Middle East, in Ukraine, Sudan, and many other countries. They all deserve to live in safety and peace. The human suffering must end. We must demand this of our leaders. Peace is the only path.

I took a 30-hour train from New York to Miami, and the motion sickness and terrible sleep were too much for me
- I recently spent 30 hours on an Amtrak train traveling from New York City to Miami in 2021.
- I found the ride to be rough and bumpy, with far too much time spent in a cramped space.
- But if you value the journey as much as the destination, you might enjoy the ride.
![write an essay on three hours Insider Today](https://www.businessinsider.com/public/assets/BI/US/logos/newsletters/insider-today-logo.png)
I've traveled on several overnight trains , but I'll never forget my first time.
As a travel reporter who doesn't particularly enjoy flying, I thought I'd try an alternative mode of transportation for a trip from NYC to Miami in 2021.
Even though the train ride was more expensive than a typical economy flight to Miami and took 10 times longer, I booked a private room with two beds and a toilet on an Amtrak sleeper train for $500.
But I didn't anticipate how poorly the constant motion and length of the trip would make me feel.
My journey began at Moynihan Train Hall at Penn Station in NYC.
Waiting at the train station felt a lot like waiting in an airport but with less security. My train ticket got me into the waiting room, where I sat until it was time to board.
Once it was time to board, I learned that sleeper cars are at the back of the train.
The sleeper cars are right behind the dining car.
Once on the train, I walked down the narrow corridor of three sleeper cars to find my room.
The corridor was so narrow that you could only walk down it single file.
Called a Roomette, this tiny, private suite is the cheapest way to travel by Amtrak if you want a bed.
A step up from sitting in coach, where you get a regular train seat, a roomette is a private space with a door and blinds to cover up the windows.
Inside, there are two seats across from each other, a table that folds out in between, and a bed above the seats that pulls down. The seats also pull out into a bed.
In some Roomettes (mine included), there's a side table that swings open to reveal a toilet. Above, there's a folding sink and mirror.
With the seat down and the sink folded up, you'd never know there was a bathroom in the room.
With two seats to a Roomette and no privacy curtain around the toilet, I was grateful to be a solo traveler.
There was no privacy for those traveling in pairs.
I recommend bringing Poo Pouri with you if you plan to take a similar trip.
A decade ago, I may have had a bigger problem with the toilet situation next to my bed in the Roomette. But, thankfully, I had packed some Poo Pourri , a spray that goes in the toilet just before you poop to eliminate odors.
Due to availability when I booked my ticket, I had to switch to another Roomette that didn't have a toilet but still had a sink partway through my trip.
There was a bathroom at the back of the sleeper car where I could use the toilet.
The room had storage features that reminded me of a tiny home, like a pullout table between the chairs.
The table had two foldout leaves, too, for more space.
One thing that surprised me about the Roomette was the variety of lighting options, which seemed to be more than what you'd get in economy on a flight.
In addition to the ceiling light, each seat had its own area light, reading light, and night light. I counted 11 light switches in my Roomette.
I was also surprised to be able to control the temperature inside my Roomette.
My Roomette had a temperature dial and air conditioning vents, and I kept it cool in my room, around 66 degrees Fahrenheit.
When the train started moving, I noticed it was a bumpy ride, like a flight when the seat belt sign is on. I figured this was temporary, but I thought the whole ride was shaky.
When I stood up to walk through the train cars, I felt like I was on an airplane during turbulence. It felt like this the whole journey, and I ended up feeling motion sickness for the majority of the trip.
Since my train ride felt bumpy, I tried not to leave my room too much. But come dinner time, I decided to head to the dining cart.
Even though eating in my room was an option, I didn't want it to smell like food in my bunk all night.
Since I got a Roomette, my ticket came with a meal, and I thought it wasn't too bad.
I had braised short ribs, mashed potatoes, and a hard roll. While I didn't love the meal as it came, I made a little sandwich out of the ingredients, which tasted better to me.
When it was time for bed, I chose to sleep on the top bunk to experience what it was like.
The room's seats fold out into a bed on the bottom level, but I wanted to try sleeping up top.
The bed was suspended in the air, and there were blankets wrapped in plastic that I found surprisingly soft and comfortable.
I thought the bed was comfy enough, but throughout the day, the shaking was much worse on the top bunk than in the seats.
As I nestled into a sleeping position, I listened to the choo choo of the train whistle and pretended I was on the Polar Express until I finally fell asleep.
I woke up a few times in the night feeling disoriented, and I had to remind myself where I was. There were also times when I was worried I might fall out of bed.
While I didn't sleep well, I enjoyed waking up to the sun rising over Georgia.
Even though I didn't sleep well, I'm glad I went with the top bunk because of the views I had in the morning.
I woke up at around 8 a.m. with about 11 hours left on my journey.
I passed a lot of the time working.
I used my Nintendo Switch, watched movies I had previously downloaded, and did work to fill the time.
While the train had internet, I found the connection to be unreliable. So I was glad I had downloaded movies, TV shows, and podcasts to my phone and iPad before my trip.
I was so grateful when I finally arrived in Miami and decided that long train journeys weren't for the faint of heart.
Since 2021, I've gotten more comfortable on overnight trains and have learned to appreciate them.
In my opinion, taking a long train journey is a lot like taking a road trip â if you consider the ride a part of the vacation, then maybe it would be worth it for you.

Born during the pandemic, Iron & Wine 's new album tackles loss and joy in equal measure. Light Verse is full of moments that are altogether aching and playful, caught somewhere between melancholic and whimsical.
Iron & Wine's Sam Beam joins us to talk about decamping to Laurel Canyon to work with producer Dave Way, collaborating with Fiona Apple , and which part of speech he's not particularly fond of including in his songs. Plus, we have a live performance taped at this year's NON-COMMvention in Philadelphia.
This episode of World Cafe  was produced and edited by Miguel Perez. Our senior producer is Kimberly Junod and our engineer is Chris Williams. Our programming and booking coordinator is Chelsea Johnson and our line producer is Will Loftus.

Somethingâs Rotten About the Justices Taking So Long on Trumpâs Immunity Case
![write an essay on three hours A view of the Supreme Court building under dark skies with the portico lighted.](https://static01.nyt.com/images/2024/06/21/multimedia/19litman-bcpm/19litman-bcpm-articleLarge.jpg?quality=75&auto=webp&disable=upscale)
By Leah Litman
Ms. Litman is a professor at the University of Michigan Law School, a host of the âStrict Scrutinyâ podcast and a former clerk to the Supreme Court justice Anthony Kennedy.
For those looking for the hidden hand of politics in what the Supreme Court does, thereâs plenty of reason for suspicion on Donald Trumpâs as-yet-undecided immunity case given its urgency. There are, of course, explanations that have nothing to do with politics for why a ruling still hasnât been issued. But the reasons to think something is rotten at the court are impossible to ignore.
On Feb. 28, the justices agreed to hear Mr. Trumpâs claim that he is immune from prosecution on charges that he plotted to subvert the 2020 election. The court scheduled oral arguments in the case for the end of April. That eight-week interval is much quicker than the ordinary Supreme Court briefing process, which usually extends for at least 10 weeks . But itâs considerably more drawn out than the schedule the court established earlier this year on a challenge from Colorado after that state took Mr. Trump off its presidential primary ballot. The court agreed to hear arguments on the case a mere month after accepting it and issued its decision less than a month after the argument. Mr. Trump prevailed, 9-0.
Nearly two months have passed since the justices heard lawyers for the former president and for the special counselâs office argue the immunity case. The court is dominated by conservatives nominated by Republican presidents. Every passing day further delays a potential trial on charges related to Mr. Trumpâs efforts to remain in office after losing the 2020 election and his role in the events that led to the storming of the Capitol; indeed, at this point, even if the court rules that Mr. Trump has limited or no immunity, it is unlikely a verdict will be delivered before the election.
The immunity case is not the only big case hanging fire. Some two dozen remain undecided that were argued even before the April 25 oral argument over Mr. Trumpâs immunity. A case on gun rights for domestic abusers under a restraining order was argued in November; cases involving the power of federal agencies and a multibillion-dollar settlement for opioid victims were heard in December and January; the court also has yet to decide whether upwind states must cut emissions that affect the air quality in downwind states. That case was argued in February.
The court is a busy place, though the justices are completing decisions at the second slowest rate since the 1946 term, according to a recent article in The Wall Street Journal. The court tries to wrap up its business for the term that began in October by the end of June. Itâs not shocking that cases argued later in the term end up being decided later, especially because by the end of April, when the immunity case was heard, the court was still working to finish cases argued months earlier. April was also among the courtâs busiest months: The justices heard 10 cases.
But these seemingly mundane, process explanations overlook some of the particulars in the immunity case. Mr. Trumpâs lawyers put together a set of arguments that are so outlandish they shouldnât take much time to dispatch. Among them is the upside-down claim that, because the Constitution specifies that an officer who is convicted in an impeachment proceeding may subsequently face a criminal trial, the Constitution actually requires an impeachment conviction before there is any criminal punishment.

To make your essay stand out, write your story in a way that no other student can replicate. As you write, keep these tips in mind: Zoom in on specific moments rather than summarizing a long period of time. Be vulnerable and share your honest feelings and thoughts. Use your authentic voice and an appropriate tone.
Make sure to schedule breaks for yourself to refresh your brain and recharge yourself. An example of a plan for a one-day essay writing project might look like this: 8:00 - 9:30 - Consider an essay question and argument for the topic. 9:30 - 9:45 - Take a short break. 10:00 - 12:00 - Conduct research.
We will continue on to that next. This is going to structure our research blocks so that we will not wander off-topic. We need to save every single second we can, so staying on task is essential. In this case it was a Monday, and I had an exam Sunday 12-3. So I got done at 3, relaxed for a bit, had dinner, and planned to do a lot of pre-writing and planning, start the paper and then wake up to bang it out. About an hour into my work I noticed at the top of the assignment it said it was due at noon. Thus began my all-nighter.
Step 3. This is where we start to have fun. For every aim I created, I want to make a single point. In a good essay, every paragraph needs to put forward a clear argument. And this is what I'll need to find: a single sentence preferably, which will be the core of every paragraph, fulfilling the aims I've just written.

But thats about the university standard. If anything, I've more commonly seen something like 3 essay answers in that time period, or 2 essays where you didn't get the questions in advance.
