Yale University aims to nurture a spirit of inquiry in its undergraduates, in the hope they will become global citizens instilled with a life-long passion for learning. Not unlike other US institutions, undergraduate study is characterized initially by diversity of subject matter and approach, and in the later years by concentration in one of the major programs or departments.

Yale University offers more than 70 possible majors, which students declare at the beginning of their sophomore year and range from the sciences to arts subjects, from physics or applied mathematics to classics, art, or African-American studies.

Undergraduate admission to Yale University, like to all of the best universities, is not easy. In 2016, Yale accepted 1,972 students to the Class of 2020 out of 31,455 applicants, giving it an acceptance rate of 6.27 percent. Of the university’s current undergraduates, half are women and nearly 40 percent are ethnic minority US citizens. A further 10.5 percent are international students.

Yale operates a residential college system which is organizationally modelled on the collegiate system at Oxford and Cambridge in the UK. However, unlike their UK counterparts, Yale’s colleges have limited autonomy and don’t contain any faculties or departments of study. All undergraduates are assigned to a college before their freshman year.

The process of application is robust yet fairly standard: all applicants complete either the Coalition or Common Application, with Yale specific questions, or the Questbridge National College Match Application. Additional requirements for freshman applicants include two teacher recommendations, a school counselor recommendation, a school report (including transcripts), a mid-year report, standardized test results (SAT Verbal, Math, and Writing, and ACT Composite). An interview is not a required part of the process, though applicants are encouraged to meet and talk with an alumnus if possible.

Receiving some of the top university teaching available is never going to be cheap, and the estimated cost of attendance for Yale undergraduates is US$72,100 per academic year. This includes tuition and fees, room, board, books, and expenses.

Fortunately, financial aid is available, and the college pledges to pay 100 percent of demonstrated financial need. Families with a gross annual income of less than US$65,000 are not expected to contribute towards their child’s Yale education, and the college’s need-based financial packages average US$49,575 a year.

International students follow the same procedure and have the same application requirements as other students. Students whose first language is not English however must take a standardized English test such as the TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE.

Each year, the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences admits around 450 of the world’s top scholars to its postgraduate programs. Yale’s was the first graduate school in the US to confer a PhD degree, and 85 percent of its students pursue doctoral studies. The school is divided into four divisions – humanities, social sciences, biological sciences, and physical sciences – and administers 73 degree-granting programs, 56 of which are PhDs, while 19 terminate in master’s degrees.

Yale has an outstanding reputation for the quality of its teaching and wide array of academic resources and services. The admission rate for 2017 was 12.7 percent, so competition for places is fierce.

Applications are submitted online, with the general requirements being a bachelor's degree (or equivalent), a statement of purpose, university transcripts, standardized test results, three letters of recommendation, and an application fee of $105.

There may also be special admissions requirements for different programs or required supporting materials. International applicants may also be required to present the result of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), which can be substituted for the IELTS.

Tuition for most full-time study programs at the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences is currently $41,000. However, no PhD student actually pays any tuition, as it’s either covered by a tuition fellowship from the graduate school, research grants or national and international fellowships.

One of the reasons why Yale is so popular with graduate students is the support Yale provides to its PhD students, starting with outstanding financial aid. Each doctoral student receives an annual stipend of up to $35,150 to help them meet living expenses. This figure is highly competitive with rival universities, but the considerably lower cost of living in New Haven makes the Yale stipend even more favorable.

Support is a watchword for graduate study at Yale. Not only do graduate students receive generous financial backing, they are also robustly supported in their professional development through the Office of Career Strategy and the Center for Teaching and Learning, the latter of which helps graduate students learn how to be better teachers. However, students at Yale teach significantly less than they might at other institutions. Over the course of six years, no more than 14 percent of a doctoral student’s time is devoted to teaching as part of their training, and for many it is much less.

Submitting Official GRE Scores

Official GRE scores must be sent to Yale University, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, directly from ETS.

  • Use Institution Code 3987.
  • You do not need to enter an individual department code when sending your official scores. Institution Code 3987 is sufficient.
  • Paper score reports are not accepted.
  • Scores released to other schools at Yale University cannot be transferred to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
  • If you are applying to a PhD program associated with one of the professional schools at Yale, send your official scores directly to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (Institution Code 3987) and not to the professional schools, which may have a separate code for applicants applying to other degree programs.
  • You should also self-report scores and any future test dates in your application.

The Educational Testing Service administers the GRE in the United States and abroad. For details and registration forms, visit their site at www.ets.org .

English Language Tests - TOEFL iBT / IELTS Academic

TOEFL iBT or IELTS Academic is required of most applicants whose native language is not English.

You may be exempt from this requirement if you have received (or will receive) an undergraduate degree from a college or university where English is the primary language of instruction, and if you have studied in residence at that institution for at least three years. See "Exemptions" for more information.

Official TOEFL iBT scores may be used to fulfill the English Language Test requirement.

If you have received (or will receive) an undergraduate degree from a college or university where English is the primary language of instruction, and if you have studied in residence at that institution for at least three years, you are exempt from the English Language Test requirement and are not required to submit the TOEFL or IELTS.

No exemptions are made on the basis of an advanced degree (e.g., MA/MS or PhD) from any institution.

When you complete your application, you will answer questions about your native language and the primary language of instruction at your baccalaureate institution. If either was English, you will not be required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores when you submit your application. No separate documentation is necessary.

Note: If you are not required to report TOEFL or IELTS scores (i.e. you are exempt because English is your native language or was the language of instruction at your undergraduate institution and you were in residence three years or more), but you choose to self-report your TOEFL or IELTS scores in the application anyways, you will be required to also submit official test results for verification purposes.

Chen's work focuses on the transforming growth factor beta family, which is correlated with many rare and common diseases. We recently spoke to Chen about her work, including her new venture to use a lipid nanoparticle to more safely and effectively deliver drugs.

Tell us about your research.

My research aims to understand why the transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ) superfamily is correlated with so many inherited diseases (like Loeys-Dietz disease and Friedrich’s Ataxia) and non-inherited diseases (like diabetes, atherosclerosis, aneurysms, and pulmonary hypertension).

How did you become interested in this work?

As a PhD student, I studied another molecule, called fibroblast growth factor (FGF), in petri dishes. After my PhD, I wanted to better understand how FGF behaves in the body. That research led me to realize that FGF and TGFβ have some correlation. They must be well-balanced, or the imbalance will affect many cells, potentially causing inflammation and cardiovascular diseases.

What does your promotion mean to you?

Becoming promoted to a senior research scientist means my hard work pays off. I have put so much knowledge, effort, and time into this research, and I know it was worthwhile.

What are you most proud of so far in your career?

I am especially proud that I co-founded a start-up venture, VasoRx , through Yale Ventures in 2018. Through this venture, we developed a specialized drug delivery vehicle called a lipid nanoparticle, which is like a Tesla in the human body: it can autopilot to a specific cell type to release drugs.

Our new drug delivery platform opens up a lot of solutions for drug delivery as it can decrease unwanted toxicities, mediate a safe and targeted cell delivery, reduce side effects, and improve symptoms. We are hoping to start clinical trials in humans soon.

It’s an honor to participate in this activity outside academia and meet experts in other fields, like chemistry and manufacturing. I’m a lifelong learner, and this work allows me to fulfill my need to keep expanding my knowledge.

What would you tell students considering a research career?

Number one, research is a lifelong event. It’s a Crock-Pot slow cooker, not a microwave. Nine out of ten of your hypotheses will fail. You need to have the mindset to keep going and to think ahead about multiple solutions.

But if you are someone who can be consistent and dedicated, it will pay off in the end.

What keeps you motivated in your work?

It is a privilege to know and work with all these great scientists and to continue to fulfill my knowledge. I just keep learning and growing.

We also support each other in the lab. If something goes wrong and I have a bad day, I know my students and colleagues will be there to cheer me on. I’m their cheerleader, too. We learn from what doesn’t work and think ahead to what’s next.

Description.

Considerable latitude exists in the program. Some students concentrate on mathematical modeling, and the selection of strategy and its impact on firm behavior. Others use behavioral science to explain customer choices. Each student is asked to achieve depth in one of these areas, since the faculty feels that this is a prerequisite for doing innovative research. However, a marketing scholar must ultimately be able to interact with a diverse group of colleagues regarding multifaceted problems. For this reason, the faculty encourages students to gain basic skills in the behavioral sciences as well as in mathematical/statistical analysis.

The curriculum for the Doctoral program is an intensive course of study designed to prepare PhD students for a successful career in academia. Over the first two years, students take 14 courses, which include two core courses, a social science sequence, an empirical methods sequence, a depth requirement, a breadth requirement, and electives. Each student will also be required to complete a two-term sequence in a social science and a two-term sequence in empirical methods.

Postdoctoral Associate: Yale Center for Customer Insights

Yale Center for Customer Insights  (YCCI, led by Professor Ravi Dhar) is seeking applications for a postdoctoral research associate for an initial term of one year, with possibility of renewal. Built on Yale’s pathbreaking work in behavioral science, YCCI partners with global marketing leaders to develop, test, and disseminate new insights that advance the understanding of the changing consumer. The postdoc position provides an opportunity to work with corporate partners to design and implement experiments in the area of behavioral science, with the goal of developing research that is both actionable and publishable. The postdoc will also be a part of the marketing group at the Yale School of Management.

Successful applicants will have broad interests in behavioral science, strong methodological and statistical training, and a track record of working on field experiments (preferably with companies or other large institutions). Given the strength of YCCI partners in the areas of health, food, fitness, transportation, and sustainability, an interest in these areas is a plus. The postdoc position will also have significant opportunities to work with other faculty in the marketing department and to develop their own research program. A Ph.D. in marketing, decision sciences, psychology, behavioral economics, or a related discipline must be completed prior to starting this position. Start date is intended to be summer 2022. This position is located in New Haven, Connecticut.

For full consideration, please submit an application as soon as possible. We will begin reviewing applications in November and will continue until a candidate has been identified or until February 1, 2022, whichever occurs first. Applications should include a curriculum vitae, statement of purpose outlining your research interests and goals, and at least two letters of references. Only complete applications will be considered. Members of historically underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply. Please e-mail applications to  [email protected]  with “YCCI postdoc” in the subject line.

Yale University is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity employer. Yale values diversity among its faculty, students, and staff and strongly welcomes applications from women, persons with disabilities, protected veterans, and underrepresented minorities.

Meet the MBA Class of 2026

Learn about the newest students in Yale SOM’s MBA program from Bruce DelMonico, assistant dean for admissions.

The Yale SOM MBA Class of 2026 photographed inside Evans Hall from above

With fall arriving and the upcoming application season in full swing, I want to take a moment to look back at the wonderful students who have completed their admissions journey and just began their MBA studies here at Yale. We were thrilled to welcome the 347 members of the Yale SOM MBA Class of 2026 to New Haven last month. August 12 marked the beginning of orientation for the Class of 2026, and classes began on August 26.

The Class of 2026 is truly global in nature, representing 42 different countries from Australia, Azerbaijan, and Brazil to Uruguay, the UK, and Vietnam. Members of the class speak a variety of languages, including German, Italian, Mandarin, Hindi, Japanese, Spanish, Hungarian, Korean, Cantonese, Arabic, Armenian, Portuguese, Igbo, Hebrew, Urdu, French, Turkish, Russian, Azeri, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and many others.

This group is a musical one—class members play such instruments as piano, trumpet, cello, bassoon, organ, guitar, violin, viola, ukulele, harmonica, saxophone, sitar, drums, harmonica, euphonium, guzheng, and flute. Many others are interested in singing, listening to and creating music, and different forms of dance. One of them sang in a choir in front of British royalty, another performed solo on the piano twice at Washington, D.C.’s Kennedy Center, and yet another is a national ballroom dance champion.

The members of this class are also extremely active, with the majority of students listing one or more sports on their résumés, including everything from rowing to scuba diving and powerlifting to figure skating. One of them won four gold medals in Chinese kickboxing as a member of the U.S. national team!

This group is also adventurous. The class includes a number of runners who have finished half and full marathons. One student competed in the Dubai Ironman, another completed two Spartan races, and one is training for a day-long 206-mile bike race. There are triathletes and PADI open water divers, certified ski instructors and alpine guides. Students in the incoming class have backpacked for 100 days in the California mountains and for 10 months through Asia, spent the night alone in the Amazon rainforest, climbed Cape Town’s Table Mountain, and trekked up the Nepalese Himalayas to the Annapurna base camps. One has visited more than 35 countries, while another has traveled to six continents.

Three people kneeling in front of a balloon display that says “SOM” with a dog

Their hobbies include gardening, baking, bartending, and photography. Many play chess. There are pilots and personal trainers, brewers and escape room enthusiasts. One class member is a self-described hot sauce aficionado, while another is a self-proclaimed “moderately talented chef” who is also a classical and medieval history buff. One member of the new class won a competition for reciting the first 275 digits of pi. One founded an animal rescue group, while another co-founded a shelter for stray cats. One has visited almost all of the Disney global theme parks. One collects maps. One writes, directs, and designs sets for plays. One student founded an ed tech startup in Ukraine; another has tamed an alligator. The list goes on.

By the numbers, 48% of the Class of 2026 hold passports from a country other than the United States—with, as noted above, 42 different countries represented overall. Women make up just under 40% of the class. Fifty-six percent of the U.S. students are students of color, and 16% are underrepresented U.S. students of color. The median GMAT score for the class is 730. (The median GRE is 166Q/164V, a 720 equivalent.) The median GPA is 3.68 on a four-point U.S. scale. Students come from 195 different academic institutions, having pursued degrees in subjects from engineering to the arts. First-generation college graduates comprise 20% of the class, while 12% have earned a previous graduate degree. Almost 10% are pursuing a joint degree with another Yale school, a sign of SOM’s deep integration across the university. Thirty-three are members of the Consortium for Graduate Study in Management, and six are members of the QuestBridge Graduate Match program. They’ve received various academic awards and honors, from summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa designations to Fulbright Fellowships and other prominent scholarships.

Their professional credentials are equally diverse and impressive, covering all sectors and a range of industries and companies. Among the incoming class, 80% of students come from the private sector, while 20% come from the nonprofit and public sectors. They have worked at organizations from the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab to ZS Associates. In all, more than 250 different employers are represented, including Amazon, BlackRock, DuPont, International Monetary Fund, McDonald’s, Teach for India, National Grid, L’Oreal Groupe, Google, Charter School Growth Fund, DiDi, JPMorgan Chase, Meta, PIMCO, The New York Times, and SK Innovation. The most common employers are the U.S. military, Deloitte, McKinsey & Company, and Accenture. The class includes 22 veterans of the United States military, as well as 23 Silver Scholars.

But what brings these incredibly diverse members of the Yale SOM Class of 2026 together is their aspiration to embody the school’s mission of educating leaders for business and society. We are so excited for them to begin this journey!
