Doctorate vs. Ph.D.: How Do They Differ?

Many people use the terms "Ph.D." and "doctorate" interchangeably, but they don't necessarily mean the same thing.

A doctorate, or doctoral degree, is the highest educational credential you can achieve. Typically, a doctorate takes 4-7 years to earn, though this length can vary depending on your field and program.

Doctorates come in many forms. Professional doctorates are geared toward specific roles and industries. For example, an aspiring business professional might earn a doctor of business administration (DBA), while a budding physician would need to enroll in a doctor of medicine (MD) program.

A doctor of philosophy, or Ph.D., is a specific type of doctorate focused primarily on academic research. Ph.D. students are expected to conduct original research and add to their field's discourse. Most Ph.D. programs also require you to write and defend a dissertation .

All Ph.D.s are doctorates, but not all doctorates are Ph.D.s.

15 Best Online Doctoral Programs/PhD Programs – 2024

April 24, 2024

online doctoral programs phd

If you’re looking to attain a terminal degree but want to skip the commute to campus, an online doctoral program might be a great option for you. As our world becomes increasingly digital, many top universities have branched out into online learning, offering online PhD and doctoral programs that are just as rigorous as their in-person counterparts. Online graduate education can offer aspiring doctoral students flexibility, a high-quality education, and the option to continue working while pursuing a degree.

Many of the universities below in our round-up of the best online doctoral programs offer degrees in education—a common track for teachers looking to advance their careers. But universities across the country offer a wide range of degrees in everything from engineering management to library science. Read on for everything you need to know as you consider applying.

The Best Online Doctoral Programs – How Long Does It Take to Get a Doctoral Degree Online?

Online doctoral programs are often designed with full-time professionals in mind, prioritizing flexibility so that you can complete your degree at your own pace. Program lengths will vary, but most will take four to seven years. For students who need to take things slower, many programs offer options to spread degree requirements out over time. When applying, here are a few good questions to ask your admissions officer:

  • How long do most graduate students take to complete their degrees?
  • Are there flexible options for how many courses you’ll take per term?
  • Will you pay tuition per semester or per credit hour? If paying by credit hour, will you able to choose how many classes you take each semester?
  • Will you be required to write a dissertation? If so, how long do students usually take to write them?

The Best Online Doctoral Programs – Is an Online PhD Program a Good Fit for Me?

There’s no denying it: online doctoral programs are different than traditional ones. Many traditional PhD programs are designed for future academics, aka for graduate students who intend to apply for jobs as university professors after graduation. Traditional PhD programs are full-time, research-focused, in-person, and often offer graduate students funding in exchange for teaching or research assistant responsibilities. Online doctoral programs do also involve research, but most online graduate students are not full-time students. Rather, many students enrolled in online doctoral programs are working professionals who attend classes in the evenings or asynchronously. With that in mind, an online program can be a fantastic opportunity to further your current career.

An online doctorate program could be a great fit for you if:

  • You want to advance your career. A doctorate can lead to further opportunities for promotion and certain fields offer automatic pay increases for people with advanced degrees.
  • You love research and want to develop expertise in a topic that fascinates you.
  • You learn well in online settings, including asynchronous classes.
  • You plan to continue working while you study.

Online doctoral programs typically do not offer their students funding, though there may be scholarships and grants available to you.

The Best Online Doctoral Programs – What to Consider When Choosing an Online Doctorate Program

Since a doctorate can take 4-7 years or more to complete, choosing the right school for you is a huge decision. Our list below dives into many details you’ll need to know like acceptance rate, retention rate, and cost of tuition. It’s important to consider big-picture factors such as:

  • Time to complete degree
  • Professors and mentors—you’ll want to make sure you can study with faculty who have expertise in your academic interests
  • Flexibility—does the program fit with your schedule? Do they require any in-person meetings?
  • Graduation rate—ask your admissions officer for the most recent figures

You’ll also want to consider whether you want to pursue a PhD or a doctorate degree. If you’re pursuing a PhD, you can expect to focus more significantly on academic research and you’ll need to complete a dissertation. A doctorate is an equivalent degree that is less focused on academic research and may not require a dissertation. Doctorates can often involve more career development or hands-on practicum experience.

The Best Online Doctoral Programs – Are Online PhDs Respected?

Yes, online doctoral programs are just as rigorous and respected as their in-person counterparts. If you hope to earn a tenure-track faculty position at a university, it’s likely a traditional PhD program will be a better route. However, if you’re seeking a doctorate for career advancement and further learning, an online doctoral program can be a great fit. Many of the most prestigious universities offer online programs, and your diploma will likely not specify whether you completed an online or traditional degree.

The Best Online Doctoral Programs – What Do I Need to Apply?

Application requirements will vary depending on the program you’re applying to. All programs will require your academic transcripts, many require letters of recommendation, and some require GRE scores. On top of that, some programs will require a personal statement or writing portfolio. Contrary to what you might think, Master’s degrees are not always required for admission to online doctoral programs.

How We Rank Schools

Accredited Schools Online uses a custom ranking system to evaluate schools on their quality, affordability, and reputation.

We rank schools using factors like graduation rate, admission rate, tuition costs, financial aid, and program offerings. All our ranked schools hold institutional accreditation .

For this page, we created a directory of online accredited Ph.D. programs that meet our criteria. The list is organized alphabetically rather than ranked.

Learn more about how we create school rankings on our methodology page .

Does Accreditation Matter for Online Ph.D. Programs?

A college is accredited after being recognized by an independent institution that verifies the school’s courses and programs meet set quality standards.

The school you choose must be accredited in order for your Ph.D. to be recognized by employers , earn professional licensures, and qualify you for federal financial aid.

Legitimate accreditors are recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and/or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

How Much Does an Online Ph.D. Cost?

In general, you can expect to pay around $13,000-$30,000 per year in tuition and fees for your online Ph.D.

Several factors affect how much your Ph.D. program will cost, including:

  • Whether the program is fully funded
  • Whether your school is public or private
  • Whether you’re an in-state or out-of-state student
  • How long your program lasts (most Ph.D. programs take 5-7 years to complete)
  • How much financial aid you get

While many in-person and online doctoral programs in the U.S. are fully funded, these tend to be highly competitive.

One way to save money on your online Ph.D. is to attend a program that offers in-state tuition to residents. Make sure you submit the FAFSA each year so you can secure federal financial aid .

You may also need to budget for occasional travel to and from campus and research sites, especially as you work on your dissertation.

What’s the Difference Between a Ph.D. and a Doctorate?

While a Ph.D. and a doctoral degree, or doctorate, both signify the same level of education completed, their uses are different.

Doctorate is the broader term — a Ph.D. is a type of doctorate. Specifically, a Ph.D. is an academic degree that prepares you for a career in research or teaching in your field of study (such as science, English, or economics).

Besides a Ph.D., other types of doctorates include a doctor of medicine (MD), a doctor of education (Ed.D.), and a doctor of psychology (Psy.D.). These degrees are typically used in either an academic or professional setting.

Online Ph.D. Programs That Don’t Require a Dissertation

A dissertation is a final written project culminating in a student’s original research at the end of their Ph.D. program. A dissertation is typically presented and defended by its author. It’s typically required for degrees with an academic or research focus.

Not all Ph.D. programs require a dissertation. For example, some Ph.D. programs in humanities, education, business administration, and criminal justice require simple or no dissertations for a quicker completion time .

What Jobs Can You Get After Earning an Online Ph.D.?

Once you finish your online doctoral program, you can explore a variety of career paths both within and outside academia.

Many Ph.D. graduates, especially those who studied the humanities, go on to become professors. Other popular roles include administrator, scientist, and psychologist.

Graduates of online Ph.D. programs earn a relatively high average base salary of $105,000 a year, according to Payscale .

Frequently Asked Questions About Online Ph.D. Programs

What is the quickest ph.d. to get.

The quickest Ph.D. to earn are those that award professional degrees and don’t require extensive research projects or dissertations at completion. These Ph.D. programs can include accounting, business, education, and media.

To finish your degree faster, you can also look for accelerated programs that quicken the pace of a program and shorten the time it takes to complete.

Are online doctoral programs legit?

If the online doctoral program is accredited, it is legitimate. Accreditation ensures that the program meets the rigorous educational standards of other comparative doctoral programs.

With accreditation, employers and other institutions of higher learning will recognize your degree. As more universities turn toward online programs to serve a more diverse student population, there are a growing number of legitimate, accredited online Ph.D. programs.

How long are online Ph.D. programs?

Online Ph.D. programs, like any other doctoral program, can vary in length but typically take 5-7 years to complete. A doctoral degree balances coursework with research. Usually, students must meet a certain number of course requirements before they can start original research.

While coursework may take only a year or two, writing a dissertation that meets the program requirements varies from candidate to candidate.

Can I earn my Ph.D. entirely online?

Yes, many accredited colleges and universities offer 100% online Ph.D. programs. That said, some programs may require on-campus experiences, such as library research and a dissertation defense.

What do employers think of online doctoral programs?

It takes a high level of discipline and persistence to obtain a graduate degree, no matter the context. Most employers will recognize and value the hard work it takes to get a Ph.D., whether you completed your doctorate online or in person.

Make sure you research potential programs. If you’re attending an accredited, well-regarded school, employers will value your online Ph.D. just as much as a traditional one.

Tips for Choosing the Best Online Doctoral Program for You

Want to figure out which online doctoral program is best for you? Check out these five essential tips.

1. Understand Your Goals

Students considering online doctoral programs should understand their professional goals and know what jobs they want to qualify for after graduation.

Not all careers require a doctorate; however, a doctorate can provide you with better salary potential and leadership opportunities, especially in fields like healthcare and education .

Ask yourself: Do you need a Ph.D. for your chosen field? If not, how will a doctorate help you?

2. Research Accredited Online Programs

There are many online Ph.D. programs to choose from, but not all are created equal.

Make sure the schools you're considering for your online doctorate are accredited by a recognized agency . If you're applying for a doctorate in a professional field like nursing , medicine, business , law, psychology , or education, you should also look for programmatic accreditation.

As you research online doctoral programs, consider how you wish to learn. Do you want a hybrid or 100% online format? Does the program require any in-person components? Decide what works best for your goals and schedule.

3. Consider Your Budget and Financial Aid Options

Before you apply to online Ph.D. programs, take time to understand your budget and the cost of each program you're considering. Some programs will cost far more or less than others. Some doctoral programs may even be fully funded, making them highly competitive.

Submitting the FAFSA can help you qualify for federal financial aid , such as grants, scholarships, and low-interest loans. You should also research institutional grants, external scholarships and fellowships , and private loans.

4. Reach Out to Faculty, Students, and Alumni

Consider contacting faculty members, current students, and recent alums of the graduate program you're interested in. This way, you can better tailor your application and have a clearer idea of what to expect during and after the program.

5. Choose One of the Top Doctoral Programs

A top-ranked doctoral program can help you reach your professional goals. After researching doctoral programs, narrow your focus to decide where to apply.

Use your research on program outcomes, doctoral specializations, and faculty mentors to identify the best programs for you. Then, make sure you meet the admission requirements and start working on your application.

Make sure all schools you're applying to are accredited by a recognized agency .

Price Check

The average tuition and fees for graduate programs in the U.S. have risen a whopping 378% between 1989 and 2021, according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).

Can You Get Your Doctorate Online? (And Should You?)

Looking for an effective way to earn your doctorate degree?

If you’re considering a doctorate, you’ve likely taken an inventory of what will be expected to earn the degree. And that inventory likely includes a huge chunk of time, energy and resources. For already-too-busy-professionals, this can be a dream killer right out of the gate.

Enter the online doctorate degree.

Can I Get My Doctorate Online?

With the reward in mind (think bigger salary, greater recognition, upward mobility), many professionals jump out of the gate by asking, “Can I do this online?”

The reason is simple – Americans are working more than ever before. According to a United Nations Study, 85 percent of American males and 67 percent of American females are working more than 40 hours per week. Beyond the bloated work schedule, people are often struggling to balance hectic home schedules, social calendars and additional commitments.

An online program offers an attractive format to earn a doctorate while balancing the ins and outs of daily life.

It turns out, this advantage is appealing to many. Online doctorate programs are rising in popularity as more and more professionals see the value of refining their skillsets via efficient and convenient programs. Today, there are 205 accredited institutions in the United States offering more than 1,000 online doctorate programs.

Earning a doctorate is challenging and rewarding, but do you know what to really expect? Download this free guide for tips and insights to help you prepare for success.

So how exactly does an online doctorate work?

Going Virtual: How It (Typically) Works

The online doctorate program is really a hybrid version of the traditional campus experience. Online students engage with professors and coursework through various formats—including webcasts, emails, messaging apps and semi-annual campus visits.

While every program is different, the process typically follows a similar structure. If you choose to get a doctorate online, here’s what you can expect:

  • Choose a program. Work with your academic advisor to build the program that is right for your career goals and objectives.
  • Determine your bandwidth. Inventory your time and priorities to identify how much time you will need to complete your program.
  • Select a path. Based on your availability and pace, you’ll identify how many credit hours you will take each semester.
  • Enroll in your courses. Each semester, you’ll join the online classes that will keep you on pace to earn your degree.
  • Get notified about current lectures and assignments. When a new lecture is available, you’ll be notified via email. Then, it’s up to you.
  • Download lectures and watch on-demand. Classes are typically delivered in a webinar-style format, complete with screen shares and presentation slides. Some programs utilize a synchronous format that requires students to log in and watch at a defined time. Others use an on-demand format. You watch them when you want, where you want, as long as you are able to keep pace with the schedule.
  • Use tools to enrich your education. Leverage tools like Slack, Skype or other messaging platforms to communicate with professors, research assistants and advisors.
  • Complete research assignments and submit via portal or email. As you complete the associated work with a lecture or course, you’ll submit to your professor for input and reaction.
  • Visit campus for important events. Depending on the program you choose, you’ll likely be required to visit the campus for a group class or meeting on a semi-annual basis.

It is possible to get your doctorate online—and the online experience offers several advantages to busy individuals. But, the real question to ask is:

Should you get your doctoral degree online?

The Online Debate: 4 Big Myths About Online Doctoral Degrees

Let’s start to answer that question by dispelling some myths.

As the popularity of online programs has risen, so has skepticism. It may be that the program sounds too good to be true, or it may be that they’ve heard too many “diploma mill” horror stories—for a variety of reasons, people tend to write off the online doctorate before they really research it.

The most common myths people believe about doctorates are:

  • They are only given out by degree mills. While there are certainly degree mills out there offering paper degrees for money, they aren’t the only ones—nor are they in the majority. There are plenty of reputable, regionally accredited institutions taking their doctorates online.
  • They are an easy way to earn a doctorate. While the program may require less face-time or physical presence on a campus, accredited programs are by no means a shortcut to earn your degree. You’ll still be expected to research, write your dissertation, and defend it successfully. In addition, the freedom comes with a challenge: learning to balance your time. No strict class schedule means you’ll need to have excellent time management skills. There’s no shortcut for that.
  • Online degrees are not credible as traditional degrees. This is a false narrative. The key is to understand the accreditation of the online program. If the institution you choose is regionally accredited, the degree carries just as much weight as a degree from a traditional program.
  • Online doctorates cost less. This also isn’t necessarily true. Just because a program is online doesn’t mean it will be cheaper. Online programs may also cause you to incur additional expenses if you need to invest in new technology (i.e., laptop and wi-fi).

Many people leave a doctorate on the table because they discount online programs early on—and fail to adhere to the standards and time-constraints of a traditional program. While there are certainly some outliers, online degrees offer a valid and creative solution to earn your doctorate degree.

The key is to pay attention to where you are choosing to get your degree.

Where Can I Get My Doctoral Degree Online?

So, you’ve settled on an online program as the preferred method for your doctorate.

The next question is where you’ll look to find a program. There are lots of institutions offering online or distance-learning doctorate programs—and it can be challenging to know where to invest your time, energy and money to ensure you’re getting the degree you want or need.

It helps to understand the guiding forces behind a school offering the program. A general rule of thumb is to understand how that type of school operates, how they make decisions, and what their chief priorities are. Online programs are offered by two types of schools: for-profit, and not-for-profit.

Most colleges offering online doctorates today are good and trustworthy institutions. There are great public, private, for-profit, and non-profit options out there (for more information, check out our blog post Non-Profit vs. For-Profit Colleges: What You Need to Know . But, there are some outliers who dangle the promise of a cheap, fast degree to get your dollars.

Avoid those types of programs at all cost.

5 Questions To Ask About an Online Doctoral Program

Once you’ve narrowed your choices down to a few select players, you’ll want to take a few additional steps to fully validate the program—and the outcome you can expect to receive. It’s best to meet or talk with the program chair and ask five big questions about their accreditation legitimacy and what the student experience will look like.

  • Are you regionally or nationally accredited? And, what is your accreditation status?
  • What is the student experience at this university like?
  • What resources will I have in this program?
  • Will I have any dissertation support? If so, what does it look like?
  • How easily accessible is the faculty here?

If you have any doubts about the legitimacy of the accreditation agency, make sure it is recognized by one of two authorities on the matter: the  Council for Higher Education Accreditation   or the  Department of Education . The latter has a  College Navigator tool   allowing students to verify the accreditation of any school they may be considering.

Why Get My Doctorate Online?

Earning your doctorate is no easy task, especially if you’re a busy working professional balancing a career, home life and social calendar. An online doctorate program may be an ideal solution for you to earn your degree. With an online program, you are in greater control of both your schedule and academic pace.

That can make all the difference between the start and finish lines of your degree.

In a doctoral program, you can dive deep into studying what makes marketing work, what employees are looking for in their leaders, how to formulate a strategic growth plan and how to operate in a global era.

In counseling, clients may sometimes come to you with issues that you haven’t dealt with before. Although you may never be entirely prepared for every situation, doctoral studies can increase your ability to deal with difficult problems.

Your program may also give you opportunities for in-depth studies about working with certain demographics, such as children or the elderly.

Earning your doctorate and conducting research on one specific area of counseling may help you focus on a particular client niche and allow you to advertise yourself as an expert in that domain. Having a doctoral degree may also give you opportunities to train and supervise counseling students in the classroom or on internships.

police officers checking evidences on a street accident

People hold many different views on the best ways to reduce crime and rehabilitate offenders, but research can provide key insights into what actually works.

Whether your goal is to lead initiatives based on others’ research or become a researcher yourself, a doctoral degree in criminal justice can help you become a leader who guides policy decisions and transforms communities.

Your curriculum may focus on ensuring that, in every step of the process from investigations to corrections, justice is served in the best way possible. You may also explore what it means to administer justice, support victims, empower justice professionals and improve communities.

With a doctorate, you may be ready to advance to some of the highest leadership roles in your law enforcement organization. You could also pursue work in a particular investigative or security specialty, such as hostage negotiation or intelligence analysis. Influencing public policy is another important role you could play.

In a doctoral program, you may study how factors like family support, income level and school setting affect students’ learning processes. You may also discuss learning theories and how principles from psychology play a role in classroom practices. Other topics may include school leadership, digital technology and curriculum selection.

School administrators, such as principals, superintendents and state education directors, often hold doctoral degrees. An education doctorate can help you advance to positions of leadership in higher education as well; for example, you could become a provost or a college president.

This degree can also open doors to positions that can allow you to head up curriculum projects or shape education policies.

In other courses, you may refine various finance skills like asset pricing, business valuation and portfolio management.

Not only can you improve your practical skills, but you can also learn to think critically about finance theory and conduct your own research in this field.

Financial leaders can hold some of the most critical roles in a corporation; these include chief financial officer, treasurer and controller. If you choose a career in research, then government authorities, financial institutions and individual investors may rely on your insights.

healthcare administrators in a meeting

Healthcare is a medical discipline, but it’s also a business discipline. Those in administrative roles must carefully balance the relationship between these two aspects of the industry. A doctoral degree in healthcare administration can help you explore the issues facing modern medical systems and consider innovative ways to move the industry forward.

Since legal regulations play an enormous role in how healthcare systems operate, developing a deeper understanding of health law may be a key component of your studies. Other classes may cover organizational leadership, global public health, quality analysis, and medical ethics.

You may also discuss how to develop your healthcare organization as a force for good in your community.

Healthcare experts can take leadership roles in hospitals or other medical systems. Your expertise may also prepare you for a role in pharmaceutical or health insurance companies. Government officials may rely on your guidance as they shape future healthcare laws.

human services worker visiting the home of an elderly man

Although most people agree that it’s important to help those who are in difficult situations, they often disagree on the best ways to go about it.

A doctoral program in human services can give you opportunities to explore current research on the topic, develop your personal views on assisting others, and become a leader whose work makes a difference for people in need.

Studying the history of human services can give you a foundation for understanding today’s systems. In your doctoral program, you will probably compare different strategies for reaching people in need and improving communities. You may also learn about overseeing teams, evaluating programs, managing budgets and securing grants.

With this advanced degree, you could pursue a management role in a public human services organization or head up a nonprofit group. Human services directors often work in government agencies, and they may conduct research that influences how public funds are allocated.

In a management program, you can study team dynamics and read research on how people interact with one another. You can also learn how to use technology to your organization’s advantage, establish an effective chain of command and work through conflicts that arise.

You might play a powerful role in an organization as a senior-level manager. As a college professor or a business consultant, you could be well-suited to helping others become better managers. You could also work as a management analyst who advises organizations on establishing effective systems of leadership.

minister praying in the church

If you work in a religious vocation, you probably chose that profession because you felt a calling to serve God and people. By earning a doctorate, you may be able to improve your effectiveness at that calling. The program can help you learn more about theology, the Bible and working among people.

In your program, you may work on enhancing your practical ministry skills, such as preaching, counseling and starting new congregations. You may also study the history of the church and the theology of the Bible.

The school may offer program concentrations like urban ministry, spiritual formation, family ministry, pastoral leadership and global evangelism.

Some people with Doctor of Ministry degrees hold pastoral positions in local churches. You might also have opportunities to advance to positions of leadership in your denomination’s regional or national organization. At a theological school, you might serve as a professor or an administrator.

Although you can enter the nursing field with only an associate’s degree, the entry-level knowledge you can acquire in that nursing program is only the beginning.

As you move forward in your successful career, gaining more education can help you earn nursing positions with greater responsibility and higher pay. Under your leadership, newer nursing students can learn to provide excellent patient care.

Although you may take some classes on disease and healing in your nursing program, just as much of your time may be on leadership development. You may also learn to evaluate healthcare quality and use that data to improve outcomes.

Earning your Doctor of Nursing Practice can help qualify you to become an advanced practice registered nurse. That means that you can be a nurse practitioner, a nurse anesthetist or a certified nurse-midwife. With a doctorate, you may be chosen to head up the nursing department in your healthcare organization, or you might teach college nursing students.

psychologist listening to an elderly patient

While a master’s degree is typically sufficient for becoming a licensed counselor, working as a licensed psychologist requires a doctoral degree. By earning your psychology doctorate, you can increase your opportunities to reach patients in need or conduct scientific research about thought and behavior.

The coursework may compare and contrast various theories of personality or behavior. You can also learn about mental health disorders, client evaluations and treatment options, including pharmaceuticals and behavior-modification strategies.

Some graduate programs are designed with a focus on clinical work, and others may address additional aspects of the field, such as industrial-organizational psychology or forensic psychology.

Earning your doctorate can help prepare you to take the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) and become licensed in your state. With licensure, you could work as a clinical psychologist in private practices, long-term care facilities or medical organizations.

You could also head up mental health initiatives in corporate or public health settings.

public administrator working in the office

Government leadership is a weighty responsibility. To manage this responsibility as best you can, consider successful career development through a public administration doctoral program.

Not only will you be better suited for positions of high responsibility, but you may also improve the public’s confidence in your abilities. That’s particularly important when it comes to elected offices.

Public administrators, especially those who hold doctorates, are leaders, so a good portion of your studies may be dedicated to leadership development. Other courses may focus on analyzing, adapting and implementing policies. You may discuss ways to ensure that the work you do helps to improve equality for all people in your community.

After your doctoral studies, you may be poised to assume one of the highest leadership roles in a municipal government. State and federal positions may be available to you as well. Plus, the skills you can gain readily transfer to nonprofit work.

doctors in a meeting

Matters of life and death often rest on the recommendations of public health officials. With so much riding on your policies and initiatives, it only makes sense that you’d want to acquire as much education as you can.

Through your studies and work, you’ll have opportunities to improve health outcomes and bolster the quality of life for entire communities.

The health sciences classes you take can help you become more knowledgeable about gathering and analyzing public health data. You can also strategize ways to turn that data into actionable public health initiatives. This may include learning about applying for funding, increasing community awareness and campaigning for updated public health policies.

Your doctorate may increase your eligibility for health sciences positions such as an epidemiologist or another researcher who studies community health data. It’s also possible that you could advance to a leadership role in a public health sciences organization at the state or national level.

policy makers in a meeting

If you believe that government regulations hold the power to help or hinder citizens’ lives, then you probably understand the importance of a career in public policy. Doctoral studies in this area can help give you an advanced understanding of what it takes to create and maintain policies that truly benefit the members of a community.

This program can equip you with skills for surveying a community and evaluating needs; this research can serve as the foundation for new policies. Your studies may help you develop a framework for evaluating the costs and benefits of policy decisions. It’s also important that your program addresses the ethical responsibilities of a policymaker.

A successful career as a senior-level political scientist may begin with a doctoral degree in public policy. You could also find success as the director of an organization that oversees public safety, community outreach, municipal government or emergency management.

Choosing an Online PhD Program

phd student studying online

As online degree programs have grown more prevalent, prospective students have had an increasing number of reputable universities from which to choose for their studies. Consider the following characteristics when looking for a doctoral program.

  • Degree Program –  Not only do you need a school that offers a doctoral degree in your general area of interest, but you may also want that degree to be in your preferred format — professional doctorate or PhD — and include appealing concentration options.
  • Flexible – In general, online doctoral degrees offer increased flexibility compared to on-campus programs. Pay attention to whether online doctoral students are required to log in at certain times, come to campus for residencies or stick to a rigid course schedule.
  • Accessible –  Before settling on a school, explore the range of resources that you’ll have access to as an online student, such as faculty mentoring, library access or student organizations.
  • Transfer Credits –  If you already have credits from other doctoral studies, a school that allows you to transfer those in can save you both time and money.
  • Admissions – Doctoral programs can vary greatly in what percentage of applicants they accept; graduate programs for professional doctorates often admit more graduate students than PhD programs.
  • Required Technology – To complete your coursework, you will need a reliable computer with certain peripherals and educational programs, but some schools’ tuition fees cover the cost of laptops for their online doctoral students to use.

If you can find a few program offering online degrees that satisfy many of your preferences in these six areas, you’ll be well on your way to selecting the best doctoral program for your needs.

PhD Careers & Salaries

PhD Careers & Salaries

Earning a PhD is typically thought of as an academic track, preparing you for a university faculty position or a role as a scientific researcher in your chosen field. You may design experiments, collect data and publish your findings in industry journals. It’s also possible that you could enter higher education administration.

With a PhD you won’t be limited only to academic careers, of course. These terminal degrees may qualify you for some of the top leadership roles in your field. For example, you might become a division manager, a corporate executive, or a director in a nonprofit organization, a healthcare system or a government agency.

Some degrees can help you earn professional qualifications that you wouldn’t be able to achieve without that level of education. For example, a psychology doctorate can prepare you to become licensed as a clinical psychologist, and a nursing doctorate can allow you to become an advanced practice registered nurse.

Earning a doctoral degree can help you understand the theories and scientific concepts that underpin practices in your field. This deepens your knowledge and may qualify you to provide expert insights about public policies or legal matters that pertain to your area of study.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, careers that typically require a doctoral degree lead to a median annual salary of $110,200 . With your PhD or professional doctorate, you may work in one of the high-paying jobs listed below.

The figures above represent median salaries based on employment statistics from across the U.S.; your actual earnings may vary.

Admissions Requirements for Online PhD Programs

phd student taking an exam

The competition to get into doctoral programs can be tough. Some schools admit only around 5% of the people who apply. To increase your chances of getting into your top graduate programs, you’ll have to compile a strong application package that sets you apart from the crowd and showcases your strengths.

  • Testing –  Many schools depend on GRE or GMAT test scores to determine whether you have what it takes to succeed in the high-pressure world of doctoral studies, but you may qualify for testing waivers.
  • Resume –  Work experience is required for admission to some schools. Even if a program doesn’t insist on a set number of years in the field, the committee may still look at your work history to provide insight about the knowledge and skills that you possess.
  • Transcripts –  Admissions committees want to see what you’ve previously studied: the fields you majored in, the courses you took and the grades you earned. There may be a minimum GPA that’s required before even being considered for admission.
  • Personal Statement –  An essay gives you the opportunity to share your goals with the admissions committee. You’ll want to present details about how your research plans align with the faculty’s areas of interest, so it’s important to customize this essay for each school.
  • Letters of Recommendation –  Two or three people who have supervised you in academic or professional settings will need to write letters vouching for your suitability for doctoral studies.
  • Prerequisite Courses – Doctoral students must be prepared to perform high-level work; to ensure that you’re ready, a program may only admit prospective students who have already taken graduate courses on certain topics. Some schools offer separate tracks for online learners who already have a relevant master’s degree and those who still need foundational graduate-level courses in the field. However, in rare cases, applicants may be accepted into doctoral degree programs with only a bachelor’s degree.

Admissions requirements can vary significantly from one program to the next. Always pay careful attention to the instructions before submitting your applications.

PhD vs. Professional Doctoral Degree – What’s the Difference?

phd student studying

Doctoral degrees come in two different forms: PhD and professional doctorate. Either one can be considered a terminal degree in most fields. Each has a different focus, though. A PhD is usually thought of as the more academic path, and the emphasis is on creating original research.

Although a professional doctorate may address research, it usually focuses more on developing high-level skills that can enhance your career as a practitioner in your field.

Despite these differences, there can be overlaps between the outcomes of these two educational programs. With a PhD, you may end up joining the professional workforce, and a professional doctorate may qualify you for teaching positions at some institutions of higher education.

Accreditation

Online Doctoral Programs Accreditation

To ensure that you earn a credible degree, you should enroll only in universities that have regional accreditation. A doctoral degree earned at a non-accredited school may not hold much value.

Regional accreditation can be granted only by an officially recognized organization. Approved accreditors in the U.S. include the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC) and the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE).

The Council for Higher Education Association (CHEA) maintains a list of organizations that grant regional accreditation.

This type of accreditation is granted to an institution as a whole; either the entire school is accredited, or none of it is. To determine whether an a school qualifies to be an accredited institution, an accrediting association evaluates factors like academic quality, student supports and administrative structure.

National accreditation isn’t the same as regional accreditation. It’s granted by different organizations and usually requires less stringent qualifications to be an accredited institution. Because the standards are higher for regional accreditation, it is always preferable.

There’s nothing wrong with selecting a school that holds both types, though. For example, an accredited institution might have regional accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) and national accreditation from the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC).

Why Does Accreditation Matter?

phd graduate in a job interview

Being a regionally accredited institution is a testament to a university’s quality and indicates that it has what it takes to deliver a good education. By attending an accredited school, you can rest assured that your degree will mean something after graduation.

Future employers will think more highly of degrees from a regionally accredited institution, so you may have an easier time securing good jobs. Other colleges will also look more favorably on an accredited school, so you may be able to transfer your credits elsewhere.

Accreditation can also affect financial aid. Federal assistance can only be used at regionally or nationally accredited institutions.

Financial Aid & Scholarships

Financial Aid & Scholarships for online phd students

The sticker price on doctoral studies can be shockingly high at first. Fortunately, there are things you can do to significantly reduce your expenses.

The government has programs in place for providing college tuition financial assistance for those in need. Based on your income, you may be able to receive state or federal grants — money that you won’t need to repay.

Even if you can’t get grants, you may be able to take out low-interest government loans. Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to learn more about your options for financial assistance at the graduate level.

To complement the government financial assistance you might receive, you can also apply for scholarships and fellowships from private sources, such as industry associations, philanthropic groups or even your university.

Some doctoral programs — most often, PhD tracks — offer funding or stipends to doctoral candidates who work as teaching or research assistants.

What Is the Best Online Doctoral Program?

Instead of looking for the single best doctoral program, strive to figure out which one is best for you. First of all, look for a school that offers a program that aligns with your goals and interests.

It’s also smart to consider factors like a school’s accreditation status and how quickly you can complete the online program. For instance, if you don’t have enough time to enroll full time, you should consider looking into PhD part time programs .

A low student-faculty ratio may increase your satisfaction as a student.

How Long Does It Take to Get a PhD Online?

How long it takes to get a PhD can vary from one school to the next, and the amount of time it takes you to complete your dissertation or doctoral project can greatly influence the overall length of your studies. As a general rule, professional doctorates may take around four years, and PhDs may take seven years.

Is an Online PhD Worth it

Is an Online PhD Worth it?

Yes, an online PhD is worth it for many students. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for jobs where a doctoral degree is required is projected to grow 6% for the next 10 years.

An online PhD program can be a smart way to further your career goals, and thinking deeply about a topic of interest to you can bring great personal satisfaction. Online students may be able to keep up with family or work responsibilities without sacrificing their ambitious goal of earning a doctorate.

Are There Any 1 Year Online Doctoral Programs?

There are multiple steps to earning a doctorate. For example, you may need to take courses, pass exams, complete an internship and write a dissertation. As a result, these degrees always take more than one year.

Even still, the accelerated format of some of the shortest doctoral programs online may help you speed up the process compared to traditional on-campus studies.

Is It Cheaper to Get a Doctoral Degree Online?

The cost per credit hour of an online doctoral degree can vary a great deal from one school to the next. On average online students might expect to spend between $500 and $1,200 per credit hour.

phd student studying at home

Are There Any 100% Online Doctoral Programs?

Many schools offer programs for earning a doctorate without ever needing to step foot on campus. You may even be able to defend your dissertation from afar.

Keep in mind that some programs have in-person internship requirements, but you may be able to find a site in your local area.

Is an Online Doctorate Degree as Good as an On-Campus Degree?

The material covered in online courses is comparable to what you’d learn in a traditional classroom, so you can count on getting a quality education through flexible online classes.

Of course, just like you would for a campus-based program, it’s important to choose a regionally accredited school offering online doctoral degrees.

Who Should Consider an Online Doctoral Degree?

Graduate students with sights set on earning a terminal degree should consider the option of online doctoral studies. Digital programs offer a smart, flexible way to take classes and engage in stimulating research without relocating to campus.

Online learning is especially beneficial for those graduate students who need to balance school with work or family responsibilities.

How Do Online PhD Programs Work?

phd student studying online

Completing the classes for your doctorate may involve watching recorded lectures, engaging in conversations with fellow online students and submitting assignments digitally.

Once you move into the research and writing portion, you can also complete that work from afar via online learning and touch base with your faculty advisor as needed.

Even a fully online program may have you come to campus a few times throughout the program or to defend your dissertation face-to-face.

Are Online Doctoral Programs Easier to Complete?

Graduate students should expect to put just as much work into an online degree program as they would an on-campus one. The curriculum, workload and expectations should be quite similar.

In fact, to be successful with online education, you will need to make organization and self-discipline some of your top priorities.

What is an Applied Doctorate?

A professional doctorate is a terminal degree that can equip prospective students with doctoral-level insights that are directly applicable to the workforce. “Applied doctorate” is an alternative name for this type of degree. It’s not the same as a PhD, which focuses on academic research.

These doctorates are available in many fields, including business, education and psychology.

Frequently asked questions

Are the degrees hosted on coursera from accredited universities.

Yes, all online degree programs available on Coursera are directly conferred by accredited institutions. Accreditation is important because it shows that an institution meets rigorous academic standards, eases your ability to transfer credits, and helps employers validate the quality of education on your resume or application.

Can I transfer previously earned college credits?

That depends on the degree you’re interested in earning. Many of the bachelor’s degrees on Coursera from US-based institutions, such as Georgetown University’s Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies , allow students to transfer some previously earned college credit s. Some, like the University of North Texas’ Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences and Bachelor of Science in General Business , are degree completion programs and require transfer credits in order to enroll.

Each university determines the number of pre-approved transfer credits that may count towards the degree requirements according to institutional policies. Check with each degree program for more information.

You can also build credit toward an online degree program by first enrolling in university pre-approved courses, specializations, and certificates on Coursera. If you decide to apply and are admitted, the courses you’ve completed may count toward your degree requirements.

Can I take online degree courses from anywhere in the world?

Yes, all you need is a reliable internet connection. No matter where you are in the world, you can enroll in the degree programs that Coursera’s university partners offer, though there may be specific application requirements based on your status as a domestic or international student.

How long do degrees take to finish?

Many degree programs with Coursera’s university partners are designed to be pursued part-time or full-time, depending on your availability.

Undergraduate degrees take between two and six years, depending on the amount of college credit you’re able to transfer (if applicable) and the length of each degree program. For instance, BITS Pilani recommends dedicating 25 hours per week to your courses, while the University of London recommends 28 hours per week.

Graduate degrees can take between one and three years.

What are the application deadlines?

College application deadlines , for both bachelor’s degrees and master’s degrees , tend to occur just once a year. However, on Coursera, you’ll find greater flexibility from universities. Deadlines tend to occur around three times a year—once in the fall, once in the spring, and once in the summer—depending on the institution.

Some degree programs, like the University of Colorado Boulder's Master of Science in Data Science , don't require an application for admission. Instead, you can qualify for performance-based admission by passing three online courses pre-approved by the university with an 80% grade or higher.

What is the online degree experience like on Coursera?

Earning your degree from a leading university on Coursera means experiencing greater flexibility than in-person degree programs, so you can earn the best degree for your needs without having to relocate or choose between your other responsibilities. You can take your online courses from anywhere in the world, at a pace that works for you.

Once enrolled in your program, you may find a range of learning options, including live video lectures that encourage you to collaborate and self-paced courses that give you greater independence. Moreover, throughout your learning journey, you'll have access to a dedicated support team, course facilitators, and a network of peers to help you achieve your academic goals. Learn more about the benefits of learning online .

Does Coursera offer scholarships or tuition assistance? Where can I find information about them?

You cannot apply for a scholarship or tuition assistance directly from Coursera. However, many university partners offer an opportunity to apply for financial support directly. Check with each degree program for more information.

You can find information on external scholarships and other resources to help fund your degree on Coursera’s Financial Resources Hub .

Is an online degree worth it?

Education is a valuable tool you can use to achieve some goals: pivot to a new field, progress in your career, or learn about a subject in more depth. Online degree programs on Coursera come from accredited university partners and typically offer the same curriculum as their in-person degree programs.

Deciding whether an online degree is worth it is ultimately up to you. Consider your overall goals, whether the subject matter in a degree program aligns with your needs, the types of skills you’d like to develop, and how you learn best. These are just some of the factors worth reflecting on as you set about reviewing different degree programs on Coursera. Learn more about whether a bachelor’s degree is worth it and whether a master’s degree is worth it .

OUR CONCLUSION,  OF THE "BUYING  LIFE SKILLS CORRESPONDENCE PHD INSURGENCE"

We know, real University Doctorate education takes grit, extreme dedication, extensions of finance, and true-blue hard work. On the other hand, to buy a PhD qualification Online, at the Doctorate level , on the basis of Life Experience , takes a mere few minutes and a credit card number. Many purchase their online diploma for accolades, but there are those, whom get their certificate with intent of fraud. for example, a common frivolous practice, is to obtain the parchment in, say. English or Teaching, albeit, with unrecognized accrediting organizations , and attempt to use this for monetary gain in another country. For their economic advantage, others will consider using this for employment or promotion purposes, dubiously, we would add. “To buy--or not to buy,” that is the question. Do your homework, and due diligence. Check all laws pertaining to the use of such accredited online articles, most importantly, regarding any other use, aside from “a Correspondence Doctorate ornament on your office wall.”

Can You Really Buy A PhD Online?

Much attention has been paid in the UK to the petition aiming to ban the advertising and provision of essay mill services . This says that you can buy a PhD for £6,750 , a figure which has been floating around the media for some time.

But, is it really possible to buy a PhD online and for a price similar to this?

The answer, unfortunately, is yes.

You can definitely buy PhD level writing. And a student who is familiar with how the essay industry works can find a better value PhD thesis than that offered by a typical essay mill.

How Do You Go About Buying A PhD?

You can, of course, buy a fake PhD certificate, or use your “ life experience ” to get a qualification from a fake university . But such qualifications are unlikely to stand up to external scrutiny.

You might try and make connections directly with a writer and work with them.

But I suspect most people will see the type of advertising for PhD mills that appears when you search on Google. It’s hard to avoid it, as even a prospective student looking for advice about which university to study a PhD at will be hit with ads of this type.

can you purchase a phd

The advertising for PhD writing services is nowhere near as advanced as for essay mills but many of the same marketing techniques are in use. You see guarantees , discounts , promises of fast turnaround times and the old favourite of “ 0% plagiarism “. But, with my marketing hat on, I think you can also tell that these services don’t really understand the prospective PhD market – although I’m not about to provide free consultancy for here to help them improve.

The less developed market for PhD writing services is also reflected in the cost per click prices charged by Google (the amount each advertiser pays every time someone clicks on the link). Advertising for PhD mills is generally cheap .

There are some high value keywords. For instance, Google in the UK suggests that advertisers bid between £11.22 and £20.49 per click for the search term “ phd thesis ” to get at the top of the first screen (the only position that really counts).

But many terms go for much less. A search term like “ buy phd online ” only requires a cost per click between £1.15 and £4.92. These costs are usually far lower than the equivalent terms for essays, coursework and assignments.

How Much Does A PhD Thesis Cost?

The web market for buying PhD level work is nowhere near as advanced as equivalent essay mills for undergraduate level. Many of the essay mills I checked advertise they will write PhDs, but do not have any detail or pricing information available on their website.

I did find a site which sold PhD by chapters. A 75,000 word PhD thesis would cost around £6,000 , not far from the headline figure used at the start of this post. However, the site also advertised having coupons available and I suspect I could have easily have pushed that price below £5,000 had I asked for a discount in the online chat.

There are much more developed PhD mills out there. Some show understanding of the contract cheating PhD level market.

One PhD mill, for example, splits its services to match the stages of the PhD journey where a student might want to hire support.

This includes everything from help with the initial application and proposal , through to chapter writing , to tutorials and mentoring for the final viva . It also claims to offer a premium service of publishable level work , produced in collaboration with an academic expert. For that level of service, enough to build the credentials for an academic job, the 75,000 word thesis would work out at £22,500 .

As my research investigating academic writers has shown , many essay mills find low priced writers and just act as an intermediary. Such budget price writers do exist at PhD level , even if they are harder to find. Presumably, some writers relish the intellectual challenge of completing advanced research as opposed to just writing basic essays.

And, you can buy a custom written PhD thesis much cheaper.

A report in the Indian media has shown that an original PhD thesis can be purchased in India for 50,000 Indian rupees (about £540) , with payment in installments possible. The source claims that PhD writing offers like this one are not uncommon and that academics will moonlight as PhD writers. I also understand that similar services can often be found advertising in newspapers in India.

PhD writing requests also occasionally appear on the major freelancing sites.

can you purchase a phd

A (live at the time of writing) request for a PhD thesis on English Literature, from a buyer in Pakistan, saw 7 people, mostly from India, offering to complete this in six weeks at rates between £750 and £1,500 (with an average of £1114) for 75,000 words . 4 of the 7 bidders were from India. At face value, fulfilling the request in that time does not seem realistic for anyone, but this may be enough to secure a successful PhD completion in Pakistan.

What About Buying A PhD Literature Review?

Just as one of the PhD mills advertises its approach of completing a PhD thesis in collaborative stages, a student using a freelance site may also outsource their PhD thesis chapter by chapter . This may be because they feel able to complete part of the thesis themselves, but need help with some sections, or they may use it as an opportunity to audition a writer to work with throughout the process.

Here is another freelance site example, taking bids, with 40 people from around the world offering to complete a 3,500 word literature review for a PhD thesis .

can you purchase a phd

The person making the request states that they are in the UK (this information is mostly reliable as the requester is verified). They are also pricing in pounds, which is not common for people outside the UK.

They have proposed a budget between £20 and £250, with offers received between £20 and £500. The mean (average) offer is at £165 (which would be about £47 per 1000 words – when I looked at essay pricing, I found lots of people willing to work for £7.50 for 1000 words ). Perhaps a better measure is the mode, where 17 offers are at £150 (or £43 per 1000 words ).

This is a prolific group of bidders, with 4884 successfully completed jobs between them, with most coming from Kenya, Pakistan and India, but also including offers from the United Kingdom, United States, Australia and Canada.

Just looking at the bidder profiles is interesting. I even found a graduate from a university I used to work at (but not someone I knew), using his MBA as a credential, completing assignments for students and even preparing fake reference letters for them (for which the going rate is around £20 per fake reference).

It just goes to show that there are many ways to get a PhD if you’re creative about it.

Should We Focus On The PhD Contract Cheating Market

The area is very much understudied. Although I’ve provided other examples in previous academic papers and talks the amount of data available is small, so it is difficult to study this systematically .

It does appear that PhDs are easier to achieve in some countries than others . We need employers to understand that not all qualifications are equal.

I’ve often discussed how an MBA is often just seen as a stepping stone to a higher level leadership job . So, people will contract cheat here. In some places, it appears that a PhD is also considered like this.

The good news is that, if academic integrity processes are suitably robust, simply buying a PhD level thesis in the UK should not be enough for its holder to be awarded a PhD title .

The student still has a spoken viva exam to get through.

Yes, students can train for this viva (and, as I’ve shown, there are services offering to prepare them), but here examiners need to have the confidence to fail the candidate if they do not have the in-depth knowledge and understanding that is required.

It all comes down to the academic integrity of the supervisory team and examiners , along with the institutional process this sits within. And getting the right student, with the motivation and ability to complete a PhD is important too. PhD students most certainly have a role to play in preserving academic integrity .

My work focuses on buying masters and doctorates in economics and development. These should be the freshest prices. Dont forget, because they are black market contracts, you may not always get what you expect.

Planning for a PhD in Supply Chain Management Online

In today’s global economy, success hinges on meeting demands efficiently. Businesses gain a competitive advantage when they have streamlined supply chain management. An online PhD in logistics and supply chain management equips you to maximize these intricate processes.

A young woman smiling at the camera, seated in a cozy room with book stacks and a vase of flowers behind her. She wears a floral dress.

Do you know that everything we use, buy, have, eat, or drink – whether it’s food or a phone – has come through supply chain management? Supply chain management impacts every industry in the United States every day. The field is ripe with opportunities and a need for strong leadership. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), roles in this field are expected to grow by 18% by 2030, and getting a PhD in supply chain management online sets you up for the top leadership roles in the field.

Online PhDs  are ideal for busy supply chain professionals who want to advance their education without sacrificing their current jobs. They are flexible, promote work-life balance, and result in lucrative industry expertise.

This guide walks you through a PhD in logistics and supply chain management online and highlights some of the best doctorate programs in the country.

can you purchase a phd

Liberty University

Liberty University offers a high-quality PhD in logistics and supply chain management online. The degree consists of four components.

  • The first component is a series of core business courses covering marketing, human resources management, supply chain management, and strategic thinking.
  • The second component covers the supply chain specifically, with classes such as global supply chain and global logistics.
  • The third component is a series of research courses, preparing students for the fourth component.
  • The fourth component is an original dissertation about supply chain management.

You can complete all course components online and benefit from classes offered asynchronously, meaning you can complete coursework and watch pre-recorded video modules per your schedule. Liberty also offers a library of pre-recorded business lessons, empowering students to pursue independent study. Most importantly, students in the PhD program in the supply chain can benefit a lot from the school’s online career development resources and one-on-one faculty mentorship.

Capitol Technology University

When looking for a PhD in supply chain management, consider the program at Capitol Technology University . Capitol Technology’s program serves two goals: first, to educate future leaders in the supply chain field and second, to build a curriculum that hones students’ research skills.

By the end of the program, all PhD candidates will have completed original research, culminating in a dissertation or three published articles in peer-reviewed research journals. Along with completing the research component of the degree, students also take courses in the theoretical framework of supply chain management, business research methods, analytics within supply chain management, and the implementation of advanced supply chain solutions.

Both coursework and research can be completed online, though the program states some in-person campus visits may be necessary. Since most students are working professionals, courses are offered at flexible times, such as in the evenings. As the faculty members at Capitol Technology University are working professionals, they understand the need to fit coursework around students’ work commitments and blend practical insights into valuable learning experiences for students.

The image shows the logo of Walden University. The text "WALDEN UNIVERSITY" is written in uppercase turquoise letters.

Walden University

Walden University offers a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) with the option to get a specialized PhD in supply chain management online. Unlike other spotlighted programs, the DBA at Walden University is a self-designed major. This means supply chain management students choose the courses they want to take instead of following a set curriculum related to supply chain. Whilethe program is customizable, it includes general business courses all studentstake. These include classes on business strategy and research methods. The required business writing course hones students’ communication skills andfulfills the program’s goal to improve students’ critical thinking and communication skills.

Almost all course components can be completed online, and minimal travel to campus is required. The exception is two in-person residencies. Both residencies take place before starting or within a few weeks of joining the program. They review the program curriculum and provide networking opportunities for students.

Prerequisites and Admission: Logistics and SCM PhD

Since a PhD in logistics and supply chain management online is an advanced degree, numerous prerequisites are needed, similar to other  PhDs in business . The prerequisites vary from school to school, but here are the general ones that most programs expect:

  • Previous education : Typically, schools require applicants to have anundergraduate and master’s degree in supply chain management and logistics or a related field, such as business administration.
  • Work experience : Successful applicants should have a decent amount of supply chain work experience before applying.
  • GRE scores : Some programs may want applicants to submit their scores.
  • A thoughtful application : Almost all schools require an application that includes letters of recommendation and essays about why you’re pursuing a PhD.

Advantages: PhD in Supply Chain Management Online

A PhD in supply chain management unlocks leadership positions. According to Cowen Partners, a leading executive recruitment firm, the C-suite position with the highest growth was chief diversity and inclusion officer, followed by the chief delivery officer, the second most in-demand C-suite position overseeing supply chain operations. Other executive and leadership roles are also in demand; a PhD provides the experience to fill them.

While any PhD in supply chain management can help graduates fulfill that role, an online degree provides benefits, including more work-school balance. With that balance, online students can take on more projects at work, bolstering their resumes. Online learning also cuts transportation costs and student fees, making it a more affordable option.

Flexibility for Working Professionals

As we’ve mentioned, an online degree provides increased flexibility. Online PhD students can often choose when or where they complete coursework to balance their studies with work and life.

Global Networking

As companies globalize, their need to implement international supply chains remains one of the biggest hurdles to overcome, according to a 2023 research study . With an online PhD, you can network with fellow students, alums, and industry professionals worldwide. This global network is a valuable asset to your career and employer.

Customize Your Learning Plan

PhDs naturally have more flexibility than other degrees. As an online student, you also have access to more electives than in-person students, meaning you can customize your coursework and dissertation or capstone project to your career goals.

Roadmap: Online PhD in Logistics and Supply Chain Management

Typically, a PhD takes five years to complete. While this is true of many of the in-person PhDs in supply chain operations that we researched, it is possible to graduate on a faster timeline with an online PhD or DBA. For example, the program at Liberty University can be completed in less time, especially if a candidate has already completed supply chain management coursework at the graduate level. If a student wants to complete their PhD on a part-time basis while working, it may take longer than five years to complete.

Foundation Courses

While the dissertation or capstone project is a large part of a supply chain PhD program, coursework still matters. Classes vary from program to program and are based on a student’s interest, but there are a few foundational courses across the board. The five below were themost common courses in the programs we researched.

Logistics and Transportation

Logistics and transportation are important facets of supply chain management, and most PhD programs will have a class devoted to transportation logistics. In this course, students review different transportation models and problem-solve transportationchallenges. The University of Nebraska – Lincoln’s in-person PhD program includes a great example of what this course can look like. Since this course details advanced topics, students should already be familiar with transportation logistics.

Theoretical Foundations

In most PhD programs, the focus is on conducting research, which often requires a strong theoretical basis. By contrast, many undergraduate and master’s programs in supply chain focus on real-world applications. To provide PhD candidates with a solid theoretical foundation, many programs offer a theory course. The University of Tennessee is one such school that also offers research methods classes.

Supply Chain Management Research

While theory classes can touch on research methods, many schools have an entire class devoted to quantitative and qualitative research methods. The University of Arkansas PhD in-person program offers a foundational class on research within the field, for example, and additional courses on specific types of research, such as statistical or analytical. Often, students take these courses early in their career so they can apply the knowledge in their dissertation or capstone during the last two years of a program.

Allocation of Financial Resources

A critical aspect of supply chain management is financing logistics and operations. Typically, companies want their supply chain teams to be as effective as possible while spending as little as possible on operations. To help PhD candidates gain expertise in this area, many programs offer a doctoral course on allocating financial resources. Liberty University , for example, offers a course in this as well as additional electives for those who want to pursue this area further.

Dissertation or Capstone

Every PhD in supply chain management program we looked at had either a dissertation or capstone requirement. This component can span semesters and often involves original research conducted, written, and defended by PhD candidates. Typically, students enroll in several dissertation and capstone credit hours and work one-on-one with a professor whose research interests align with theirs. The University of Michigan outlines this process on its website and provides examples of past supply chain dissertation papers.

Do I Need to Complete a Dissertation or Capstone?

A dissertation is a hallmark of most PhD programs, but it isn’t always necessary for a supply chain doctorate. Depending on the program, students may complete a capstone with real-world applications instead. If you prefer to complete a more hands-on capstone project, look for a program like the one at Capitol Technology University .

Concentrations and Specializations

The purpose of a PhD is to become an expert in supply chain management. Since this is quite an overarching industry, many programs offer concentrations that provide more specialized knowledge in a specific area of logistics. Common concentrations include analytics, healthcare operations, humanitarian logistics, behavioral operations, and sustainable supply chains. Texas A&M has a wide array of specializations that provide a better idea of what these concentrations look like.

While the terms are often used interchangeably, there is a difference between a DBA and a PhD. A PhD tends to focus on research and contributing to the academic conversation about supply chain management, while a DBA is more focused on real-world applications.

Will I need to attend classes on campus, or can I pursue my degree 100% online?

The online and in-person breakdown of a PhD can differ from school to school. Fortunately, there are many 100% online programs, including the PhDs at Liberty University . To determine if there are any in-person components for a specific program, ask the admissions representative.

Why is accreditation important for doctoral students?

Without the proper accreditation , a PhD in supply chain management won’t be recognized by other academic institutions or employers. Before starting a program, make sure the school has regional and programmatic accreditation. Typically, PhDs in business are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP).

Supply Chain Management PhD Financial Aid

A PhD in logistics and supply chain management can be expensive. According to the Education Data Initiative , the average PhD costs $133,340. There are financial aid options that can help lower costs. These include scholarships, fellowships, work-study programs, and employer tuition reimbursement schemes for employees. Many schools also have fully-funded stipends for PhD students, such as the University of Arizona or the Amazon Scholars Program at Georgia Tech University.

Sample of Online Program Costs

Careers for logistics and supply chain doctorate-holders.

Supply chain management is a growing field, and there are plenty of opportunities for graduates, particularly at the executive level. Many companies are looking for chief delivery officers and chief operating officers. According to the BLS, those in executive leadership roles make more than $100,000 per year, though salaries can be much higher, depending on the company and job title.

Since PhD graduates also have significant expertise, they can find work within academia or for government organizations or nonprofits. In these roles, they conduct research on how to improve supply chain operations.

Salary and Growth Outlook

Salaries and job growth are strong across the board for PhD graduates, but some roles in supply chain management may offer more job security and higher salaries. Refer to the table below to get an idea of job growth and annual pay for some of these roles per the BLS.

Streaming Bundles Are Here, and You May Need a Ph.D. to Navigate the Options

T he good news: There are a lot of ways to save money on streaming by taking advantage of special deals, bundles and packages in the marketplace.

The bad news: Keeping track of the growing menu of options gets more challenging by the week.

Earlier this month, Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery announced plans for a discounted package of Disney+, Hulu and Max that will be available this summer. And Comcast on Wednesday will launch a $15-a-month bundle of Netflix, Apple TV+ and its Peacock service for its Xfinity customers.

More tie-ups are in the works. Bundles are a great way for streamers to expand their reach and reduce the rate of customer defections. Users, meanwhile, get a discount at a time of sharply rising streaming prices, as well as a simplified bill.

Many consumers might find the array of possibilities more confusing than helpful. Are you a Verizon or T-Mobile customer? A Walmart+ or Instacart+ member? A user of Charter’s Spectrum cable-TV service? All of this matters in the increasingly messy world of streaming.

Media executives say we may be at an intermediate point in the evolution of streaming. Things could get really, really complicated before they get simpler.

A whole new world

Step one was for media companies to simplify things under their own tents. Disney did that by offering its full array of services—Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+—in a package known as the “Disney Bundle Trio,” for $14.99 with ads and $24.99 mostly without ads. There are also “Duo” packages that don’t include ESPN+. Paramount did something similar by merging Showtime into its Paramount+ service.

The bigger challenge is for rival media companies to join forces. They have to agree on how to split revenue and who manages customer relationships. That is why the pairing of Disney and Max is a big deal. The companies are going to offer bundles of the ad-supported and ad-free versions of their services, but have yet to disclose their prices.

Expect to see more like this. Disney, Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery are bundling their sports programming into a new streaming service, Venu Sports, due to launch later this year. ESPN has had talks with the National Football League about ways to bundle their subscription offerings. The owners of Peacock and Paramount+ have explored a joint venture or partnership, The Wall Street Journal reported. And Apple has been on the hunt, too.

In some cases, it takes a third party to bring rival players to the table. Verizon has tried to carve out that role: For example, a bundle of Netflix and Max, with ads, is available to Verizon’s “myPlan” wireless customers and costs $10 a month.

To bundle or not to bundle

Bundling popular services should make a lot of sense for many consumers—but not everyone.

Dennis Jamiolkowski, for instance, already subscribes to Disney+, Hulu and Max, but he isn’t sure he will sign up for a bundle of all three services. The reason: He only pays $3 a month for Disney+ and Hulu combined—the result of a one-year deal he landed on Black Friday—so that new bundle would have to be heavily discounted to be attractive.

The 45-year-old lawyer from Long Island also likes the freedom of being able to hunt for streaming deals. “Let’s say I bundle three apps, then I see a sale for a singular app—I can’t take advantage of that sale because I’m trapped in a bundle,” he said.

Bundles might not always make sense for all streaming companies, either. Offering a discount is most beneficial if it helps a service reach many new customers.

Bundles can help with customer retention, which is a major issue for streaming services. Many users jump back and forth between platforms to watch a specific show, then cancel when they are done.

Offering multiple services as part of one package decreases the likelihood that subscribers will cancel on any given month, according to data from Antenna. The subscriber-measurement company found that most streaming services count about twice as many casual consumers—people who are either past subscribers or have signed up less than six months ago—than long-term users.

Here again, there is an exception: Netflix, which has the lowest rate of customer defections in the industry and twice as many long-term users as casual ones. That means it might have less to gain from bundling than its rivals, though bundles give it an opportunity to reach price-conscious consumers and expand the user base of its year-and-a-half-old ad-supported plan.

So many perks

Before you sign up for a streaming service, you should check whether you already have access to it free or at a discount. For instance, many T-Mobile customers get Netflix’s ad-supported plan at no extra cost.

A subscription to Paramount+’s ad-supported “Essential” plan (normally $5.99 a month) is included as a benefit of the $98-a-year Walmart+ membership program. Comcast’s discounted bundle of Netflix, Apple TV+ and Peacock is being made available to its TV and internet customers. Charter, meanwhile, negotiated deals with Disney and Paramount to make Disney+, ESPN+ and Paramount+ to some of its Spectrum TV customers at no extra cost.

Services can also be tied to credit-card issuers and delivery apps, among others.

Josh Lowmon said he gets Netflix, Hulu and Apple TV+ at no extra cost through his T-Mobile subscription. A soccer fan, he used to subscribe to Peacock and Paramount+, but he canceled both when he found out he could access them at no charge through two shopping-delivery apps: Instacart+ and Walmart+, respectively.

“There’s no point in paying for something that I can get for free,” said Lowmon, a 42-year-old information-technology project manager from Denver.

Instacart+ was a popular option for football fans last season, when Peacock had exclusive rights to two games. When he found out one of the Peacock games would feature his favorite team, the Buffalo Bills, Ryan Inzana griped at the idea of having to pay just to watch a single game—until he realized his credit card gave him free access to Instacart+, which in turn offered free access to Peacock.

“In a roundabout way, we wound up getting a free subscription to Peacock,” said the 38-year-old chief financial officer from Columbia, S.C.

Streaming nirvana

The dream for many consumers is to pay one bill for all their streaming services and access them through one app—seamlessly launching a show on Netflix or Paramount+ or Disney+ without switching apps or logging in.

Companies like Apple and Roku, which are already hubs for accessing streaming apps, are vying to become the gateway through which users watch—and, ideally, pay for—everything. You know who else is? The original bundlers of TV: the cable guys.

Through their Xumo joint venture, Charter and Comcast are looking to bring streaming and live TV together in one package by blending content from multiple platforms into a single interface.

If this is all too complicated and tangled, and if most of what you want to stream is on traditional TV—news, sports, your favorite shows—there is another option: Just sign up for cable, or a new-age version of cable such as the $72.99-a-month YouTube TV.

Doctoral Regalia:

Doctoral regalia is the most elaborate and sophisticated type of academic regalia. It is worn by individuals who have earned a doctoral degree, such as a PhD, EdD, or MD. Doctoral regalia consists of three main components: the gown, the hood, and the tam or bonnet.

The Doctorate Gown:

The gown is usually made of black material and has long, flowing sleeves. The front of the gown is open and often features velvet panels or decorative piping. The gown can be worn with a formal shirt and tie or a blouse and skirt for women.

The Doctoral Hood:

The hood is the most distinctive feature of doctoral regalia. It is worn over the gown and is usually made of silk or satin. The color of the hood represents the field of study or academic discipline of the wearer. For example, a blue hood signifies a degree in philosophy, green for medicine, and purple for law. The color of the lining of the hood represents the institution that conferred the degree.

The length and shape of the hood also vary according to the degree being conferred. The length of the doctoral hood is determined by the level of the degree, with the doctoral hood being the longest. The shape of the hood is also determined by the degree, with the doctoral hood having a bell-shaped design.

The Doctoral Tam:

The academic tam is a hat worn with the gown and hood. It is usually made of black velvet and features a tassel in a specific color that represents the degree being conferred. For example, a blue tassel signifies a PhD degree, while a gold tassel signifies an EdD degree.

Importance of Wearing Doctoral Regalia:

The wearing of doctoral regalia is an important tradition in academia. It symbolizes the wearer's academic achievement and expertise in their field of study. It is also a way to honor and recognize the years of hard work, dedication, and sacrifice that went into earning a doctoral degree.

Doctoral regalia also serves as a visual representation of the academic community. It creates a sense of unity and belonging among scholars and helps to identify individuals who have earned a doctoral degree. It also promotes a sense of pride and accomplishment among those who wear it.

Furthermore, wearing doctoral regalia is a sign of respect for the institution and the academic community. It shows that the wearer is part of a larger network of scholars who are committed to advancing knowledge and making a positive impact on society.

Conclusion:

Doctoral regalia is a traditional and important part of academia. It represents the wearer's academic achievements, field of study, and institutional affiliation. It serves as a visual representation of the academic community and promotes a sense of unity, pride, and accomplishment among scholars. The wearing of doctoral regalia is a sign of respect for the institution and the academic community and is an important tradition that should be honored and respected.
