Essay on “Science and Society” Complete Essay for Class 10, Class 12 and Graduation and other classes.

Science and Society

Essay No. 01

Synopsis : Science and society are in constant and fruitful interaction through scientists.  Man is a social being and so is a scientist.  Society provides scientists with laboratories,. Libraries and institution of learning and the scientists in their turn commit themselves to the betterment of the society by their discoveries, exploration, inventions etc. Science is a rational approach to truth.  It is the path of reason, knowledge, research and dynamism to reality. Pt, Nehru was a great champion of scientific approach to the truth and did hi utmost to cultivate scientific temper among the people.  Science stands for challenge and change in the face of old, routine, conventional, stagnant and rotten.

Science is the systematic study of the physical universe and its contents by means of observations, measurements and experiments,. It is an attempt to explain nature and behavior of things,. Science goes down deep into the causes of life and nature, their evolution, their interaction and thereby attempts to improve the conditions and quality of living.  Science help sin greater and more objective analysis of cause and effect, of facts and evidence, Science opens new frontiers of knowledge and unravels the mysteries of nature and things.

Men and women who make these researches, studies, discoveries and unravel mysteries are scientists.  They are integral part of the society collectively and individually. Society with its well established law and order, facilities for research, analysis, observation, experiments etc. helps them to conduct their explorations and discovers in the unknown.  Without a society no scientific research and development are possible.  The growth and development in science and technology are in direct relation and proportion to the development and growth of society The more developed and advanced a society is, the better the conditions and facilities for research in higher areas of knowledge and learning there are. In their turn the scientists have theri9 social obligations and commitments to see that they contribute generously in the improvement of quality of life.

In modern India there have been many great champions of science and advocates of scientific thinking who paid their wholehearted homage at the shrine of pure knowledge.  But pt. Nehru stands above them all beaus the strove hard throughout his life as a man, leader and the first Prime Minister of India to inculcate the scientific temper among the Indian populace.  Once in an opening ceremony speaking on the spirit of Science, he said, ”Science teaches us new ways of doing things. Perhaps, it improves our conditions of industrial life but the basic things that science should do is to teach us to think straight, to act straight and not to be afraid of discarding anything or of accepting anything provided there are sufficient reasons for doing so.

Science in itself is neither good nor bad.  It is human beings who make science.  Ills of science like the destructive power of nuclear weapons, the erosion of values because of spread of gross materialism, ever increasing depletion of natural resources, degradation and pollution of the environment etc. are actually the ills of man using science in a way that is destructive, undesirable and unholy.  It is because the scientist in man has deviated from his social commitments, social conscience .  Therefore, there are some sections in the society who want an immediate halt to the growth of scientific researches and studies.

Science and morality or change and continuity are not inimical or incompatible,. The evil lies in human mind which can use both science and morality for evil purposes, Science is knowledge, pure, objective and empirical engaged in making the life more easy, comfortable and less painful.  There is hardly and walk of department of life which is not in the embrace of science . It has helped us in conquering diseases, hunger, famine, distances and physical and geographical barriers,.  It has turned the globe into an international village.  The conquest of space and the moon are some of the greatest achievements of modern science and technology.  The true spirit of science lies in search and discovery of truth.

Essay No. 02

Science has revolutionised life and brought about tremendous social change. Mankind has benefited immensely from the advances in science However; the misuse of scientific knowledge can be disastrous for man Therefore, it is vital to prevent abuse of science. Man, if determined, can do it with his natural wisdom .

Science and technology have made tremendous progress in the last two centuries and almost revolutionized the human existence. No aspect of human life has remained unaffected by it. Today, mankind has come a long way from those early days of civilization when it was at the mercy of natural forces and paid obeisance to every object of nature-sky, earth, moon, sun, trees, even animals-out of sheer ignorance and a, fear. We cannot help but marvel at the ingenuity of our ancestors, who with their preservenice and constant endeavor managed to unravel the mysteries of nature, and made it possible for man to have basic necessities of life, like food, shelter and clothing. After this initial victory over the forces of nature, there was no looking back. Man home the master of his environment to a large extent.

Science which has given so many blessings to mankind has also simultaneously created instruments of destruction which can annihilate the whole world in no time. We cannot underestimate that science can not only heal, it can also kill.

Our progress in science and technique has involved some tincture of evil, with good. Our comforts and conveniences have weakened our physical stamina and moral fibre. Today, merely «by pressing various kinds of buttons we can get what we want. It has led to wasting of human bodies and brought new diseases which science is still grappling with.

Industrialization in its wake brought problems of congestion of cities due to mass exodus of rural people in search of employment. Our cities have become infested with slums and ghettos.

Science has given man deadly weapons which have increased crime and destruction of man by man. Two world wars have amply proved that science can be very destructive. People have not yet recovered from the horrors of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. The large scale human suffering that time has brought about a remarkable change in the lifestyle of the people Today, a farmer can harvest a much better crop due to the availability of effective pesticides fertilizers, canals for irrigating the fields, etc-all made possible by the scientific research. Progress in the industrial field has been all the more impressive. Besides providing employment to many, it has reduced the drudgery in life and provided man with ample leisure to pursue his personal interests and widen his horizon. Our forefathers did not have the means of entertainment and education like radio, television, cinema, etc. to fill up their leisure hours. These modern means of mass communication have truly proved to be very effective tools of education.

In earlier times, there were no rapid means of transport and communication. It is not short of a miracle that today we can travel around the world in an aeroplane within 24 hours. Science has performed wonders in the field of communication. We don’t have to wait for days in anxiety to get news of our loved ones. One can talk to ones near and dear relatives over long distance on telephone, or send messages. The world has indeed shrunk and frontiers of distances have been overcome. Communication satellites like INSAT-IB have added to the marvels of science.

The most valuable contribution of science has been in the field of medicine which has reduced human suffering to large extent. Infant mortality rate has come down and average life span of man has increased. Today, it is due to the discoveries of science that we have been able to find a cure for most diseases like small-pox, cholera,  tuberculosis, etc. and prevent the outbreak of epidemics. Discovery of antibiotics has made it possible for the doctors to relieve “people of their pain and Suffering.

Atomic energy is one of the most valuable discoveries of science. It is effectively used in the fields of medicine and surgery. It is used even to produce cheap electricity. In agriculture farmer are able to save their crops from destruction by pests and insects with the help of atomic energy. It industry too, it has helped in the production of better quality of goods.

Scientific age has indeed brought about astounding Social change. However, all changes are not necessarily conducive to the welfare of man. Today, the world lives under a fear of the outbreak of Third World War, which if it was to become a reality could be the end of life on earth. In spite of this dark looming cloud more and more countries have acquired sophisticated weapons and are spending the precious national income on defense equipment. We are virtually sitting  on a volcano ready to erupt any moment. If they are used by the nations who have them, the entire mankind will be destroyed in one sweep.

Unplanned industrialization has played halo; with our ecology. Today, environmentalists go hoarse by crying in vain to attract the attention of the people in power to save the trees, hills, etc. which are a Source of “life and to control the pollution levels in the atmosphere which is taking a heavy toll We should learn lessons from Bhopal tragedy and Chernobyl disaster before it is too late.

There is, therefore, an: urgent need to ensure that knowledge and power gained through science is used for constructive purposes The future of  mankind cannot be left to be determined by the whims and fancies of a few. We should work for the benefit of the human race and planet on which we live.

Man has to exercise control over his primitive passions like lust for power, instinct to fight for his survival He should use science for his advancement and growth and not allow it to destroy everything Men must take their destiny do their own hands and using their natural wisdom use science to build a glorious future for the human race.

science and society essay for 2nd year

Understanding Science

How science REALLY works...

  • Understanding Science 101

Science is embedded in, and influenced by, the broader society.

Science and society

Societies have changed over time, and consequently, so has  science . For example, during the first half of the 20th century, when the world was enmeshed in war, governments made funds available for scientists to pursue research with wartime applications — and so science progressed in that direction, unlocking the mysteries of nuclear energy. At other times, market forces have led to scientific advances. For example, modern corporations looking for income through medical treatment, drug production, and agriculture, have increasingly devoted resources to biotechnology research, yielding breakthroughs in genomic sequencing and genetic engineering. And on the flipside, modern foundations funded by the financial success of individuals may invest their money in ventures that they deem to be socially responsible, encouraging research on topics like renewable energy technologies. Science is not static; it changes over time, reflecting shifts in the larger societies in which it is embedded.

Here, we’ll briefly examine a few of the many ways in which the larger society influences science. You can investigate:

Essay On Science In Everyday Life

Benefits of Science

Science very efficiently plays the role of being a faithful servant of man. In every walk of life, science is there to serve us. We require the benefits of science whether in our home, in office, in a factory, or outside.

Gone are the days when only wealthy people could afford luxuries. Science has made many luxurious items of the past cheaper in price and has brought them within the reach of everybody.

Computer technology is one huge benefit of science. Nowadays, it would be unimaginable to consider living without computing technology.

A huge number of professions now rely totally on the computer and the internet. Besides, the computer and the internet have become our biggest source of entertainment in our everyday life.

Automobiles, an important scientific invention, has made our lives easy by significantly reducing everyday commuting time. The air conditioner is another scientific invention that has made our lives bearable and comfortable in the face of extreme weather conditions. Also, in the field of medical science, high-quality medicines are available that quickly remove any ailment that can happen in everyday life like headache, sprain, cough, allergy, stomach ache, fatigue etc.

Dark Side of Science

In spite of its tremendous benefits, there is a negative side to science. Science, unfortunately, has also done some disservice to humanity due to some of its inventions.

One of the biggest harms that science has brought to humanity is in the field of armament. Although some hail the invention of gunpowder as a great achievement, humanity must rue the day when this invention happened.

Steadily and relentlessly, the use and perfection of gunpowder have taken place in many new and more destructive weapons. As such, humanity now suffers due to weapons like shells, bombs, artillery, and guns. Such weapons threaten the everyday life of all individuals.

Another disservice of science has been the emission of pollution. A huge amount of radioactive pollution is emitted in various parts of the world where nuclear energy production happens. Such pollution is very dangerous as it can cause cancer, radioactive sickness, and cardiovascular disease.

Of course, who can ignore the massive amount of air pollution caused by automobiles, another scientific invention. Furthermore, automobiles are an everyday part of our lives that emit unimaginable levels of carbon monoxide in the air every year. Consequently, this causes various lung diseases and also contributes to global warming and acid rain.

Long Essay on Wonders of Science 800 Words

We humans observe our surroundings or incidents and document our inferences, in form of facts and also figures. This further leads to some new explorations and logical conclusions, which is termed as science. Science is in a regular process of development and exploration, through human intervention.

Science is omnipresent; it is into everything and everywhere, whether we notice or don’t. The road we walk on, the house we live in, the utensils we use, the clothes we wear, the soaps, toothpaste, medicines, fans, air conditioners, even the chairs and beds, have produced only due to scientific advancement and in a way are the products of science or to be more precisely “Wonders of Science”.

There are innumerable wonders of science ranging from a small pin to a supersized jumbo jet or a space craft and it is not possible to mention all in this article; therefore, we will go through some of the most significant “Wonders of Science”, those have completely reformed human lives.

Wonders of Science

“Wonders of Science” is a popular essay topic for students of Std 1 to Std IX and Std X. Below given “Wonders of Science” will develop the students’ curiosity about science and also leave them wanting more, with an affinity towards scientific explorations.

“Wheel” has got a place in our list because it is a very significant scientific invention, so much so that today a nation’s economy depends on how much wheels are rolling on its roads. Without wheels a nation will stand still, stalling its growth. Could you imagine going to office or school without using any wheel on anything, in some way or the other, for that matter. Of course not!

Wheel is also a perfect example of the development of an object, through application of science. Therefore the wheels that we use today in our vehicles have developed in many stages from its primitive form invented almost 12000 years ago. Primitive wheels were nothing but a circular section of wood with a hole at the centre.

  • Electricity

Electricity is obviously another commodity, without which everyday life is unimaginable. The evolution of electricity that we use today has taken thousands of years of scientific research and studies. Long before, when people weren’t aware of electricity, they were, never the less, aware of the shock from an electric fish. Ancient Egyptians and physicians of around 2750 BCE have documented the experiences with electric fish, in their texts.

Subsequent, researches carried out in 16 th , 17 th and 18 th century by many enthusiasts and scientists, before Thomas Alva Edison discovered Direct Current and Nicola Tesla invented Alternating Current in 19 th century. The discovery of electricity from an electric fish to useful DC and also AC currents, have made possible only through persistent scientific research and development.

Computers are one of the greatest inventions of science. The first ever calculation device “Abacus”, developed in 1622 by William Oughtred and simple frame fitted with strings having beads around them. Therefore the computers that we use today have evolved from the Analytic engine developed by Charles Babbage between 1833 and 1871. From Abacus to Analytic engine to modern day desktop and laptop, computers have progressed hugely in shape, size and also capacity and undisputedly have become the most significant scientific wonder.

Internet is also one of the most wonderful inventions of science and has also become an inseparable part of our day to day life. Internet invented to satiate man’s desire to bring the world closer. It has revolutionized communication and information exchange as never before. Therefore the internet speed that we have access to today is a result of a century’s research and development.

This “internet” wonder of science is still in the process of development and is going to get better and better with every passing minute. Perfect example of how science applied to an idea or a thing, can push it on the path of infinite development.

Essay Samples on Science

Some college students like to attend STEM workshops, research innovations, or develop something unique as they learn, yet working with science essays often appears overly challenging. An actual problem often relates to unclear grading rubrics or being unable to narrow things down. Seeking the most efficient solutions, one should take an interdisciplinary approach to writing, which means that you must explore more than one discipline. For example, see how the science can be explained by various specialists and talk about why it becomes easier for most people when approached differently. You should also see science essay examples that we have collected for you because things instantly become clearer if you have a set of actual samples. Focus on more than one example and compare how each author has addressed the same problem based on a particular scientific concept. We have intentionally provided examples that deal with similar topics to provide you with more variety. When you are structuring your science assignment, work with your facts first and state your objectives in the very first paragraph. It will help to keep your writing structured and offer a healthy balance of the data you have collected, reliable quotes, and your personal opinion.

They bring a wealth of academic, research, and leadership abilities

MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL (07/01/2024)—University of Minnesota College of Science and Engineering Dean Andrew Alleyne has named four new department heads in the college. All bring a wealth of academic, research, and leadership abilities to their departments.

Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science

Professor Kevin Dorfman has been appointed as the new d epartment h ead for the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science (CEMS). Dorfman started his five-year term on July 1, 2024.

Dorfman joined the University of Minnesota faculty in January of 2006 and was quickly promoted up the ranks, receiving tenure in 2011, promotion to professor in 2015, and named a Distinguished McKnight Professor in 2020. He previously served as the director of undergraduate studies in chemical engineering from 2018-2022, where he headed a large-scale revision of the chemical engineering curriculum and saw the department through its most recent ABET accreditation.

His research focuses on polymer physics and microfluidics, with applications in self-assembly and biotechnology. He is particularly well known for his integrated experimental and computational work on DNA confinement in nanochannels and its application towards genome mapping. Dorfman’s research has been recognized by numerous national awards including the AIChE Colburn Award, Packard Fellowship in Science and Engineering, NSF CAREER Award, and DARPA Young Faculty Award.

Dorfman received a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Penn State and a master’s and Ph.D. in chemical engineering from MIT.

Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering

Professor Archis  Ghate has been appointed as the new Department Head for the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering after a national search. Ghate will begin his five-year term on July 8, 2024.

Ghate is an expert in operations research and most recently served as the Fluor Endowed Chair in the Department of Industrial Engineering at Clemson University. Previously, he was a professor of industrial and systems engineering at the University of Washington. He has won several research and teaching awards, including an NSF CAREER Award.

Ghate’s research in optimization spans areas as varied as health care, transportation and logistics, manufacturing, economics, and business analytics. He also served as a principal research scientist at Amazon working on supply chain optimization technologies.

Ghate received bachelor’s and master’s degrees, both in chemical engineering, from the Indian Institute of Technology. He also received a master’s degree in management science and engineering from Stanford University and a Ph.D. in industrial and operations engineering from the University of Michigan.

Department of Mechanical Engineering

Professor Chris Hogan has been appointed as the new department head for the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Hogan started his five-year term on July 1, 2024.

Hogan, who currently holds the Carl and Janet Kuhrmeyer Chair, joined the University of Minnesota in 2009, and since then has taught fluid mechanics and heat transfer to nearly 1,000 undergraduates, advised 25+ Ph.D. students and postdoctoral associates, and served as the department’s director of graduate studies from 2015-2020. He most recently served as associate department head.

He is a leading expert in particle science with applications including supersonic-to-hypersonic particle impacts with surfaces, condensation and coagulation, agricultural sprays, and virus aerosol sampling and control technologies. He has authored and co-authored more than 160 papers on these topics. He currently serves as the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Aerosol Science . Hogan received the University of Minnesota College of Science and Engineering’s George W. Taylor Award for Distinguished Research in 2023.

Hogan holds a bachelor’s degree Cornell University and a Ph.D. from Washington University in Saint Louis.

School of Physics and Astronomy

Professor James Kakalios   has been appointed   as the new department head for the School of Physics and Astronomy. Kakalios started his five-year term on July 1, 2024.

Since joining the School of Physics and Astronomy in 1988, Kakalios has built a research program in experimental condensed matter physics, with particular emphasis on complex and disordered systems. His research ranges from the nano to the neuro with experimental investigations of the electronic and optical properties of nanostructured semiconductors and fluctuation phenomena in neurological systems.

During his time at the University of Minnesota, Kakalios has served as both director of undergraduate studies and director of graduate studies. He has received numerous awards and professorships including the University’s Taylor Distinguished Professorship, Andrew Gemant Award from the American Institute of Physics, and the Award for Public Engagement with Science from the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). He is a fellow of both the American Physical Society and AAAS.

In addition to numerous research publications, Kakalios is the author of three popular science books— The Physics of Superheroes , The Amazing Story of Quantum Mechanics , and The Physics of Everyday Things .
