2. Assets: Assets are items you own that can provide future benefit to your business, such as cash, inventory, real estate, office equipment, or accounts receivable, which are payments due to a company by its customers. There are different types of assets, including:

  • Current Assets: Which can be converted to cash within a year
  • Fixed Assets: Which can’t immediately be turned into cash, but are tangible items that a company owns and uses to generate long-term income

3. Asset Allocation: Asset allocation refers to how you choose to spread your money across different investment types, also known as asset classes . These include:

Compound Interest: This refers to “interest on interest.” Rather, when you’re investing or saving, compound interest is earned on the amount you deposited, plus any interest you’ve accumulated over time. While it can grow your savings, it can also increase your debt; compound interest is charged on the initial amount you were loaned, as well as the expenses added to your outstanding balance over time.

10. Depreciation: Depreciation represents the decrease in an asset’s value. It’s a term commonly used in accounting and shows how much of an asset’s value a business has used over a period of time.

11. EBITDA: An acronym standing for Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization , EBITDA is a commonly used measure of a company’s ability to generate cash flow. To get EBITDA, you would add net profit, interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization together.

12. Equity: Equity, often called shareholders’ equity or owners’ equity on a balance sheet, represents the amount of money that belongs to the owners of a business after all assets and liabilities have been accounted for. Using the accounting equation, shareholder’s equity can be found by subtracting total liabilities from total assets.

13. Income Statement: An income statement is a financial statement that summarizes a business’s income and expenses during a given period of time. An income statement is also sometimes referred to as a profit and loss (P&L) statement .

14. Liabilities: The opposite of assets, liabilities are what you owe other parties, such as bank debt, wages, and money due to suppliers, also known as accounts payable . There are different types of liabilities, including:

Not all financial statements are created equally. The balance sheet provides an overview of a company's assets, liabilities, and shareholders' equity at a specific time and date.   • Cash and cash equivalents  are liquid assets, which may include Treasury bills and certificates of deposit.
  • Accounts receivable  are the amount of money owed to the company by its customers for the sale of its products and services.

  • Accounts payable are the bills due as part of a business's operations. This includes utility bills, rent invoices, and obligations to buy raw materials.
  • Wages payable are payments due to staff for time worked.
  • Notes payable are recorded debt instruments that record official debt agreements, including the payment schedule and amount.
  • Dividends  payable are dividends that have been declared to be awarded to shareholders but have not yet been paid.

Shareholders' Equity

Unlike the balance sheet, the income statement covers a range of time, which is a year for annual financial statements and a quarter for quarterly financial statements. The income statement provides an overview of revenues, expenses, net income, and earnings per share.

Operating revenue is the revenue earned by selling a company's products or services. The  operating revenue for an auto manufacturer would be realized through the production and sale of autos. Operating revenue is generated from the core business activities of a company.

Non-operating revenue is the income earned from non-core business activities. These revenues fall outside the primary function of the business. Some non-operating revenue examples include:

  • Interest earned on cash in the bank
  • Rental income from a property
  • Income from strategic partnerships like royalty payment receipts
  • Income from an advertisement display located on the company's property

Other income is the revenue earned from other activities. Other income could include gains from the sale of long-term assets such as land, vehicles, or a subsidiary.

Primary expenses are incurred during the process of earning revenue from the primary activity of the business. Expenses include the cost of goods sold (COGS), selling, general and administrative expenses (SG&A), depreciation or amortization, and research and development (R&D).

The cash flow statement (CFS) shows how cash flows throughout a company. The cash flow statement complements the balance sheet and  income statement .

The CFS allows investors to understand how a company's operations are running, where its money is coming from, and how money is being spent. The CFS also provides insight as to whether a company is on a solid financial footing.

The cash flow statement contains three sections that report on the various activities for which a company uses its cash. Those three components of the CFS are listed below.

Operating Activities 

The operating activities on the CFS include any sources and uses of cash from running the business and selling its products or services. Cash from operations includes any changes made in cash accounts receivable, depreciation, inventory, and  accounts payable . These transactions also include wages, income tax payments, interest payments, rent, and cash receipts from the sale of a product or service.

Investing Activities

Investing activities include any sources and uses of cash from a company's investments in its long-term future. A purchase or sale of an asset, loans made to vendors or received from customers, or any payments related to a merger or acquisition are included in this category.

Also, purchases of fixed assets such as property, plant, and equipment (PPE) are included in this section. In short, changes in equipment, assets, or investments relate to cash from investing.

Financing Activities

Cash from financing activities includes the cash from investors or banks and the cash paid to shareholders. Financing activities include debt issuance, equity issuance, stock repurchases, loans, dividends paid, and debt repayments.

The cash flow statement reconciles the income statement with the balance sheet in three major business activities.

Example of a Cash Flow Statement

Below is a portion of ExxonMobil Corporation's cash flow statement for fiscal year 2021, reported as of Dec. 31, 2021. We can see the three areas of the cash flow statement and their results.

  • Operating activities generated a positive cash flow of $48 billion.
  • Investing activities generated cash outflows of -$10.2 billion for the period. Additions to property, plant, and equipment made up the majority of cash outflows, which means the company invested in new fixed assets.
  • Financing activities generated cash outflows of -$35.4 billion for the period. Reductions in short-term debt and dividends paid out comprised most of the cash outflows.

The statement of changes in equity tracks total equity over time. This information ties back to a balance sheet for the same period; the ending balance on the change of equity statement equals the total equity reported on the balance sheet.

The formula for changes to shareholder equity will vary from company to company; in general, there are a couple of components:

  • Beginning equity : This is the equity at the end of the last period that simply rolls to the start of the next period.
  • (+) Net income : This is the amount of income the company earned in a given period. The proceeds from operations are automatically recognized as equity in the company, and this income is rolled into retained earnings at year-end.
  • (-) Dividends : This is the amount of money that is paid out to shareholders from profits. Instead of keeping all of a company's profits, the company may choose to give some profits away to investors.
  • (+/-) Other comprehensive income : This is the period-over-period change in other comprehensive income. Depending on transactions, this figure may be an addition or subtraction from equity.

In ExxonMobil's statement of changes in equity, the company also records activity for acquisitions, dispositions, amortization of stock-based awards, and other financial activities. This information is useful for analyzing how much money is being retained by the company for future growth as opposed to being distributed externally.

An often less utilized financial statement, the statement of comprehensive income summarizes standard net income while also incorporating changes in other comprehensive income (OCI). Other comprehensive income includes all unrealized gains and losses that are not reported on the income statement. This financial statement shows a company's total change in income, even gains and losses that have yet to be recorded in accordance with accounting rules.

Examples of transactions that are reported on the statement of comprehensive income include:

  • Net income (from the statement of income)
  • Unrealized gains or losses from debt securities
  • Unrealized gains or losses from derivative instruments
  • Unrealized translation adjustments due to foreign currency
  • Unrealized gains or losses from retirement programs

In the example below, ExxonMobil has over $2 billion of net unrecognized income. Instead of reporting just $23.5 billion of net income, ExxonMobil reports nearly $26 billion of total income when considering other comprehensive income.

Nonprofit organizations record financial transactions across a similar set of financial statements. However, due to the differences between a for-profit entity and a purely philanthropic entity, there are differences in the financial statements used. The standard set of financial statements used for a nonprofit entity includes:

  • Statement of Financial Position: This is the equivalent of a for-profit entity's balance sheet. The largest difference is nonprofit entities do not have equity positions; any residual balances after all assets have been liquidated and liabilities have been satisfied are called "net assets."
  • Statement of Activities: This is the equivalent of a for-profit entity's statement of income. This report tracks the changes in operation over time, including the reporting of donations, grants, event revenue, and expenses to make everything happen.
  • Statement of Functional Expenses: This is specific to nonprofit entities. The statement of functional expenses reports expenses by entity function (often broken into administrative, program, or fundraising expenses). This information is distributed to the public to explain what proportion of company-wide expenditures are related directly to the mission.
  • Statement of Cash Flow: This is the equivalent of a for-profit entity's statement of cash flow. Though the accounts listed may vary due to the different nature of a nonprofit organization, the statement is still divided into operating, investing, and financing activities.

The purpose of an external auditor is to assess whether an entity's financial statements have been prepared following prevailing accounting rules and whether any material misstatements are impacting the validity of results.

Limitations of Financial Statements

Although financial statements provide a wealth of information on a company, they do have limitations. The statements are often interpreted differently, so investors often draw divergent conclusions about a company's financial performance.

For example, some investors might want stock repurchases , while others might prefer to see that money invested in long-term assets. A company's debt level might be fine for one investor, while another might have concerns about the level of debt for the company.

When analyzing financial statements , it's important to compare multiple periods to determine any trends and compare the company's results to its peers in the same industry.

Taking into account Centro management experience, there are three main issues that are to be addressed, namely: company directors do not have to consider signing financial reports as formality and remember that they are the ultimate authority which controls financial statements; overload with information cannot be used as an excuse for absence of control over the accounting process; there must be a person who would check financial reports in the company (internal financial auditor) and consult top management regarding financial issues. B. Eight former directors of Centro were accused in failure to disclose short-term debt of $3 billion. This is a serious misinterpretation which cannot be justified by the lack of basic accounting standards knowledge. The directors should rely neither on the management nor on the auditors when it comes to checking financial reports. Also, directors’ trial to pass the responsibility to auditors affirmed the lack of leadership qualities. The conclusion is that the directors must have at least basic accounting education in order to implement control functions in the company and be responsible for the documents they sign. Centro top management must pay attention to developing leadership attitude and skills of building a strong team. C. Corporate governance is often referred to general principles of accountability, corporate internal relationships and power. It also regulates relationships between the corporation, management and stakeholders of the company. Obviously, the principles of accountability and regulation of relations between the corporation and the stakeholders were violated by Centro. However, Centro case can be merely an exception from the rule. Australian governance model is fairly considered the best model in the world. Centro new management should pay particular attention to comprehensive education of company management, diversity and development of leadership qualities. As accounting standards change with time, governance model should be changes in accordance with them as well. D. The contemporary business environment suggests top management wide knowledge and excellent leadership skills. It is a difficult task for a director to succeed in both directions. However, this is a necessary requirement to diverse knowledge and skills possessed by the top management. It could be a good idea to choose directors from former chief accountants who, in addition, show leadership skills and are able to see the overall picture behind financial statements. On the other hand, there is a risk of deepen into accounting disregard of setting strategic goals. This could lead to loosing leadership positions in the market since excellent accounting skills and the ability to develop long-term strategic goals rarely converge. It could be a good idea to choose board members from managers possessing mentioned above skills to achieve necessary balance. E. In accordance with the court decision, some of the members of Centro Board of directors were penalized. Thus, Andrew Scott, Centro former CEO, was imposed to a fine of $30,000. It would be nice if directors realize that their remuneration correlates with the accountability associated with their sign-off activity. Poor ethical performance and negligent attitude should be penalized because it makes negative affect on all stakeholders of the company and its positive image. Company shareholders stop trusting the company and the company will be driven to bankruptcy. Shareholders of the company were deprived of their dividends. In addition, shares had significantly declined in price undervaluing shareholders’ equity.

A. Financial Analysis a) Total assets as of the year 2007 made up $8,165,056,000 while total assets as of the year ending 2011 made up $6,714,995,000. Assets decreased significantly in comparison to the level of 2007. b) The formula for basic accounting equation is as follows: Assets = Liabilities + Capital (Appendix 1). The analysis of accounting equation showed significant decrease of capital and increase of the amount of liabilities in 2011 (Appendix 2). c) Non-current liabilities as of end of the year 2010 made up $12,397,766,000 in comparison to non-current liabilities as of end of the year 2007 made up $2,846,434,000. There is an essential increase of non-current liabilities observed at the end of the year of 2010. d) There are no non-current liabilities and non-current assets for the year 2011 because the company stopped its long-term investing activity. A significant part of Centro’s assets was located in US non-current. US economics challenged the company negatively influencing financial results. Centro’s management made a decision to sell US assets to improve financial performance of the company. Selling US debt aimed at reducing the debt associated with US assets. In addition, current liabilities were wrongly interpreted as non-current liabilities. It may occur when non-current liabilities are accounted from year to year and then are wrongly accounted at the end of the period when they should be converted into current liabilities. e) Data containing total revenue, net profit attributable to members of Centro Properties Ltd and EBIT for the years 2007 and 2011 is shown in the Appendix 3. Despite total revenue for the year 2011 is much higher than in 2007, net profit attributable to members of Centro Properties Ltd is almost the same for each year. EBIT of 2007 is 2.6 times higher than that of the year 2011. f) Despite net profit for the year 2011 almost 6 times higher that that of the year 2007, net cash flow for the year 2011 is 3.6 fewer than that of the year 2007 showing reduction of company investment activities (Appendix 4). Decreased cash flow is a bad sign for the company future as it offer less money for development of competitive advantage. g) Net cash inflow from financing activities for the year 2007 is $2,510,333,000 while net cash outflow of $830,359,000 was reported for the year 2011. Financial activities of the company resulted in significant cash outflow (repayments of interest bearing liabilities). h) The tendency of divestment began in 2007 after the world crisis. It continued in 2011 resulting in total devaluation of company assets. Divestment means the disposal of investment activities. It happens when the company management realizes that the company carries out the activities which are not compatible with core business activities.

Microsoft will take over Nokia's Devices and Services business, which includes both Smart Devices and Mobile Devices. In other words: The Lumia, Asha and X series are now all under Microsoft's umbrella. Design teams, supply chain, accessories, employees, developer relations and most of Nokia's manufacturing plants and testing facilities are also on Microsoft's side, as are most of the company's services like MixRadio, Store and more. Here, Nokia's mapping entity, is considered a separate business and isn't included as part of the deal, but Microsoft has agreed to a 10-year licensing agreement. On the one hand, Nokia's decision to sell its mobile phone business to Microsoft is a Finnish tragedy. At Nokia's best times, this giant contributed a quarter of Finland's economic growth for past 10 years: it paid 23% of Finland's corporate taxes. On the other hand, getting out of the mobile phone business sector is a probable blessing for Nokia. Life is tough nowadays for second-tier smartphone companies. Nokia's global market share in the mobile phone market has dropped to 14 percent (from 19.9 percent a year ago, according to Gartner). The revenue of the company brings in from its devices and services division is down by more than half since 2008.This paper is aimed to show why Nokia had to be saved by someone external, both from the technological and financial point of view.

Nokia was a synonym for the mobile phone industry for a long time; however, when it came into the era of smart phones, the former leader was under an awkward situation. Nokia sold its mobile phone business to Microsoft on September 3, 2013. A company following Kodak with the legendary color failed in the impact of the new technology revolution. This was a typical case of the subversion of an industry; therefore, the author believed that it was necessary to analyze the process. This paper studied Nokia's decline mainly from the three parts. First of all, looking back Nokia's development process from the glory to the decline, it can be divided into three stages: the transition period, the peak period and the decline period, followed by analyzing the reasons of its decline from three parts: Nokia executives' grasp for the market, the company's business strategy and business cooperation, and finally analyzing its inspiration for modern enterprises from the marketing perspective.

Three-dimensional printed polymeric lattice structures have recently gained interests in several engineering applications owing to their excellent properties such as low-density, energy absorption, strength-to-weight ratio, and damping performance. Three-dimensional (3D) lattice structure properties are governed by the topology of the microstructure and the base material that can be tailored to meet the application requirement. In this study, the effect of architected structural member geometry and base material on the viscoelastic response of 3D printed lattice structure has been investigated. The simple cubic lattice structures based on plate-, truss-, and shell-type structural members were used to describe the topology of the cellular solid.
