“Love is the greatest gift that one generation can leave to another” ~ Richard Garnett

The above saying truly acknowledges the bond between grandparents and grandchildren. No matter how fast-paced this world becomes, this bond survives. Our grandparents are our biggest supporters in life. Now that I look back at the time, my grandfather has been the most influential person I’ve ever known.

My grandfather’s name is Shashank Paul. He is a very humble man. He has continuously been present in all the stages of my life. This year he turned seventy-nine. Despite his age, he is the most energetic member of our family. His jolly personality always brightens our mood. My grandfather acts like the root which binds our family all together.

My grandfather has multiple interests. He is very fond of gardening. Our backyard is filled with shrubs and herbs of all kinds. He is a great home cook. Often I watch him pick tomatoes from the garden and create innovative dishes for me. He says cooking is therapeutic. Being a retired headmaster of the Public School, books have been his pride possession.

His other hobbies include watching movies and listening to my grandmother’s songs. I feel lucky to be able to live with my grandparents. Whenever I got scolded by my mom or dad, my grandfather always comes to my rescue. We share a special bond. I always share my day to day stories with him.

Every weekend, we sit together and watch a horror movie. Once in a while, he lets me cook some dishes for him. Picnics are our favourite moments. My grandfather never lets me down. He encourages me to try out new things. Whenever I feel scared, a simple nod from him is enough to boost my confidence.

He considers me his best friend. And he feels like he is revisiting his childhood when I am with him. Our laughs are contagious. After his retirement, I am beginning to spend more time with him. Our bond keeps getting stronger with the passing time.

My Grandfather Essay for Children and Students

December 10, 2017 by Study Mentor 1 Comment

Tall, Dark, Handsome

If somebody would ask me that who is your first love, without any doubts I would say it’s my ‘grandfather’. My grandfather has specified, what life is? And how to live a life, why is it important to live a life happily. I always had this perception in my brains, that if ever anybody could give a tough competition to Mr. “Amitabh bachchan” it is only ‘my grandfather’.

The tall, the dark, the handsome personality always took my heart away. The beautiful pumpkin nose, the white safa permanently on his head, of course the white kurta pajama and the brim of smoke of hukka making his face dusky, sitting on a chair, simply looking at the walkers of the mohalla, had left a great impact on everybody else.

It is a great pleasure for me to write about him, because a grandfather like him, cannot be there anymore. The only person of his kind is him, himself. The reason we all called him ‘bapu’ was he himself, because he always thought that he should be called differently by his grandchildren, as ‘dada’ is the most common word in the dictionary of words. This is what life meant to him. Live differently.

Table of Contents

Man in Uniform

my grandfather

And the best chunks I found in his narrations were; when he used to come to the point of food. The best cook of the world for me was none other than my grandfather. Who learnt cooking during his army days? Delicious samosas, pakodas, the chicken, and the mutton made by him always leave me in the situation like a flesh in front of a dog.

My grandfather was a food holic who loved to eat as well as to cook food. I still remember the days when both my grandparents had fight with each other, he would cook his own food for next 10 days. Or else would not take a plate of food from anybody, except me or my brother. He was tricky man to understand yet simple to be loved.

The Power Bank

My grandfather always had been a power bank for all of us, still remember when I first joined the school, and never wanted to leave him back at home, he was the one sitting outside my class on a wooden block waiting for me for the entire day, and I would look out of the window if he was there or not.

I still remember the fights which he had with the school authority for sitting there on that wooden block for me the entire day. My grandfather has always pampered me like a doll in his life. My grandfather always has been a positive energy which further led me to what I am today.

Father of Father

Indeed he is the father of father, but has always proved to be one. He is the one to whom you can approach any time for anything. Saying a no, wasn’t in his dictionary.

I still remember he was one who bought me my first computer, he was the one who had fight with my father for sending me on my first school trip, he was the one who saved 1500 rupees every month for my marriage and he was the one who ran after my father for beating my brother. And hence, he is the father of my father.

It brings tears in my eyes; when I have to believe that you are a bright star in the sky. One question often revolve in my thoughts. Why god time and again does wrong with the person who was purest at heart and makes the strongest one the weakest.

My grandfather was the strongest man, though emotional but strong enough physically. God did not had enough strength to digest that. And made my love, the star of my eyes a ‘cancer patient’. Who fought back cancer not only strongly but had all desire to live. Bapu wherever you are be strong as always you have been.

You are there, still be missed

It’s been two years now, that my grandfather is not physically present with us. But bapu! There is not a single a day that you were not there in my thoughts. My grandfather was one of my superpower which I had.

He was the one who cried to the loudest and the hardest when I was about to leave his house after my marriage, whenever I think about it, tears role down my cheeks and always wish you could be there with me always and always.

I miss you the most

I always feel luckier that I had a people like my grandparents in my life. Their love is unconditional, they have the purest heart, the best people in the entire world. And the personality like my grandfather cannot be gained by the second person of this world.

My grandfather had his own flavor. Lastly, I have a message for my grandfather that you will be always missed, though I can always sense, feel that you are somewhere around making me cautious at different stages of life, I can sense you, be it in my thoughts, in my dreams, in the sky, in the stars.

I just want to say that please always be my superpower, the way you always have been. If one power I would have. I shall ask for my grandfather in my life again. And would always want you as my grandfather.

My Grandfather, My Inspiration Reflection Essay Example

Everyone admires a person as they grow up and experience different things in life. While many people may admire celebrities and influential people in society, I find that it's easier to admire someone that you know because you have a personal relationship with the person. When it comes to me, the person that I admire the most is my grandfather. We all have people whom we consider to be inspirational and influential to look upon, and I believe that my grandfather is an outstanding example of these characteristics. He is an admirable person in my life because he is a charitable person, high-spirited and hardworking.

One thing I admire the most about my grandfather is his charitability, which he has shown numerous times in his life. My grandfather goes out of his way to help others without them asking. Despite having four children, my grandfather still helped others as he believes that it is important to see others succeed in their tasks. He has sponsored numerous people through university as well as their post-graduate studies. For example, my grandfather sponsored a parish priest in Nigeria to obtain his postgraduate degree in England. I hold great admiration for my grandfather because he’s shown me that it’s important to care for others as the well-being and success of those around me will directly affect me.

My grandfather is also a high-spirited person who doesn't let negative circumstances weigh him down. Even when a situation isn’t in favour of my grandfather, he always tries to find the good. Whenever I’m with my grandfather, there’s never a dull moment with him, he can cheer people up and lift their spirits when they’re feeling down. He spent several years as the chairman of the parish pastoral council of his local church. As a result of his role, he was constantly counselling people and giving them ways to remain positive and happy despite the challenges they were facing at the time. Thanks to this, I always try to help others whenever they are in a situation that requires giving them advice and even in bad situations, I look for lessons that I can learn and apply in the future.

An additional reason why I admire my grandfather is because of his diligence and hardworking nature. Many times in my grandfather’s life, he’s had to work his way to success and living comfortably. After going abroad for university, my grandfather returned to Nigeria and started his engineering company. After working many years, he was able to work with organizations such as FIFA and worked with the Nigerian government. As a result of his success, he was able to live comfortably and raise his kids comfortably. When he explained to me how he was able to grow his company, it displayed the importance of diligence and hard work. Through him, I’ve learned to perform tasks to the best of my ability.

The existence of inspiring people such as my grandfather helps make our lives better and mould us into the best version of ourselves. My grandfather is a charitable person, high-spirited and is hardworking. Throughout the years, I have learned many things from him which have helped me become a finer person.

Being his grandson, I always had the opportunity to learn so much from my grandfather. He always taught me that science has answers to all the world’s questions. He gifted me a telescope for my last birthday, and it is the best gift I have ever received. We enjoy long evenings observing the moon and the planets through my telescope.

He is also a very jovial person and always makes funny jokes about everyday things. He loves gardening and has applied his knowledge in science to develop a lush green garden in our house to grow fruits and vegetables. The death of veteran reporter Fred Hanson is another blow to community journalism

The patriot ledger reporter was about to cover a school board meeting when he collapsed.

Patriot Ledger reporter Fred Hanson in the Ledger newsroom in 2015.

Community journalism has been rapidly shrinking, with the United States losing a quarter of its newspapers in the past two decades. Great patches of small-town America find themselves in a news blackout, leaving local residents without information on how their tax dollars are spent, who is developing the property down their streets, and what their schools are doing to educate their children.

But in Braintree and other South Shore towns, locals had Fred Hanson, a fixture at The Patriot Ledger for nearly 43 years. His death this week outside Braintree Town Hall, where he was about to cover a school board meeting, not only marks an uncertain future for Braintree, the South Shore, and the Ledger — it’s also a symbol of a disappearing kind of local journalism.

“Fred was the Ledger,” said Linda Shepherd, a former Ledger editor. “For Braintree, they’ve lost their news. Going forward, I don’t think anybody will have their ear to the ground the way Fred did.”

Across the nation, local newspapers have struggled to adapt to the digital age as readers moved their attention away from print. Advertising shifted too, which has left newspapers without the print advertising revenue that sustained them for decades.

Over the past several years, thousands of journalists have lost their jobs and local newsrooms have been hardest hit. More than half of US counties have either no or limited access to local news, according to a 2023 report from Northwestern University. While new nonprofits and other local newsrooms have cropped up, they often have fewer reporters than the outlets they replaced.

When papers close or contract, communities suffer. Studies show places without strong news coverage often have lower voter participation rates and more cases of corruption .

That makes the loss of a reporter like Hanson that much greater.

“It’s almost impossible to replace the experience that people like Fred Hanson have,” said Dan Kennedy, a journalism professor at Northeastern University. “With his demise, just an unbelievable amount of institutional knowledge goes with him.”

Community journalism has been rapidly shrinking, with the United States losing a quarter of its newspapers in the past two decades.

His colleagues and sources alike couldn’t help but notice the significance of the veteran newsman, 67, dying while doing what he always did — covering the often-mundane workings of small-town local government. It’s a job that increasingly fewer people are doing in an ever-shrinking industry.

“Although it was sudden and shocking, I am comforted by the fact that he passed while doing the job that he loved in the town that he loved,” said Joseph Sullivan, the former Braintree mayor.

Hanson was inspired to become a journalist after the Watergate scandal showed the power of journalism to expose wrongdoing and prompt change, his sister Elizabeth Hanson said. When he first started at the Ledger in 1981, American journalism was booming. The Quincy-based paper had a newsroom of more than 200 employees, a former editor said.

Now, the Ledger’s website shows 10 newsroom staffers besides Hanson.

Over the decades, the Ledger changed owners several times and now lacks a physical newsroom after its owner Gannett — which is trying to pay off more than $1 billion in debt after it merged with GateHouse in 2019 — declined to renew its lease this year.

Several of Hanson’s former colleagues and family members described him as a “walking encyclopedia” who could reference old movies and music ranging from Jimmy Buffett to soul. Having never married or had his own children, Hanson was the devoted uncle that “every single one of his nieces and nephews looked up to,” his sister Julie Hanson said. He was also an avid reader. He was so proud of the fact that he read both Robert Caro’s “The Power Broker” and Leo Tolstoy’s “War and Peace” that he jokingly posted on Facebook he wanted his obituary to mention it.

“You didn’t want to play Trivial Pursuit with him,” said Regina Hanson, one of Fred Hanson’s 12 siblings.

But it was Hanson’s intense devotion to and knowledge of the South Shore that distinguished him as a journalist. As other Ledger reporters went on to larger papers like the Globe, The Washington Post, and The New York Times, Hanson stayed on the South Shore.

The Patriot Ledger no longer has a newsroom after its owner, Gannett, declined to renew its office lease in Quincy.

His most recent beat was covering Braintree and Milton, but he was often the reporter editors would dispatch for breaking news at all times of day, and would cover anything from a restaurant opening to a motel demolition. Hanson’s reporting was always thorough and his editors never got complaints about his stories, his former editors said.

“I don’t think there’s a town on the South Shore that he didn’t cover at one point,” Shepherd said. “The news was his purpose — it was his life.”

Former colleagues said Hanson was committed to his job in a way most reporters were not. His coverage areas weren’t just a beat, they were his lifeblood.

“There’s a level of importance to having someone at government meetings,” said Chris Walker, a former Ledger reporter who now serves as the chief of staff to the Quincy mayor. “Fred stuck to that all the way through.”

In 2013, Hanson suffered a cardiac arrest while at the gym. He returned to work seven weeks later. He later wrote about his experience with humor and appreciation for the bystanders and medics who saved his life. He wanted his obituary to say he “died again.”

“Reporters frequently write about death,” he wrote in 2015 . “They rarely write about their own. Mine came on July 19, 2013. It wasn’t on my list of things to do that day.”

Hanson’s father and paternal grandfather both died suddenly of heart problems at 45 and 55, respectively, he wrote. Hanson had a device called an automatic implantable cardioverter defibrillator implanted in his heart, he wrote, adding he’d written 700 news stories in the 19 months following the episode.

It was unclear what caused his death Monday, his sister said.

Ken Johnson, a former Ledger editor who worked with Hanson for nearly 40 years, said he “never wanted to be anything but a reporter.”

“As sad as it is,” Johnson said, “it’s somehow fitting that he would die with his boots on.”
