1) Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering/Technology or any other Engineering discipline or a Master's degree by Research in Mechanical Engineering/Technology or any other Engineering  discipline. Candidates must have obtained at least 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA out of 10 in their Master's. For admission under project fellowship GATE qualification is required as per funding agency norms. 

2) Master's degree in Sciences with a valid score in GATE/UGC/ CSIR/NET/NBHM or equivalent qualification. Candidates must have obtained at least 65% marks or 7 CGPA out of 10 in their Master's.

3) Exceptional candidates having B.Tech/B.E degree with at least 65% marks or 7 CGPA out of 10 and valid GATE score can apply for PhD programmes. The candidates who are in the final year (seventh semester) of their B.Tech/BE program should apply under Direct PhD program (as per Direct PhD norms).

A candidate with a Bachelor's degree from any IIT and having a CGPA score of 8.00 out of 10 and above are exempted from requirement of GATE to apply.

The relaxation in eligibility and reservation for SC/ST/OBC/PwD will be as per the rules of Govt. of India.

  Candidates with external fellowships like UGC JRF NET/ CSIR/ NBHM/ INSPIRE/ DBT etc. with appropriate background can also apply

How to Join for Ph.D. at IIT Without Clearing GATE?

With bachelor's to end as students, we always think what is the next step. And many of you dream to do higher studies in well-versed institutions. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is a flagship programme of the department’s research. All Research Scholars (students pursuing a PhD) contribute in a significant way to the research activities of the department. They get significant flexibility in selecting their courses and research topics.

Dual MTech + PhD programme

The department offers admissions to a new, dual degree (M.Tech. + Ph.D.) programme. The programme is designed to induct bright students who have completed their B.E./B. Tech./M.Sc. degrees directly to the doctoral programme. The timelines and key milestones of this programme are aligned with the M.Tech and Ph.D. programmes currently offered.

Research Scholars spend their work time producing novel research. They read about the latest advances in their area, propose and experiment with novel ideas, critically analyse their results, and publish and present their findings at highly selective international conferences and journals for peer-review and information dissemination. While doing so, they develop, under the apprenticeship of their faculty supervisors, skills for critical reading, ideation, experimental design, implementation, analysis, synthesis, writing, and communication. Many Research Scholars also help their faculty supervisors in informally guiding Master’s and Bachelor’s students on smaller projects, write proposals for research funding, and actively pursue collaborations with other research groups from around the world. PhD students are expected to take their own initiative and transition to become independent researchers over the course of time. To obtain a PhD, the Research Scholars have to publish their research in reputed journals and conferences, and produce a PhD thesis (dissertation). 

PhD studies is also a time to develop a well-rounded personality by pursuing extra-curricular activities. Mumbai provides a cosmopolitan and metropolitan lifestyle, being the financial capital of India, with its experience of diverse cultures, cuisines, and industries. Most students can find accommodation in one of the hostels of the IIT Bombay campus. There are also studio apartments available for married students. The campus is well-equipped with numerous sports facilities and it has numerous student interest clubs.  .

The overall process for a successful Ph.D. includes completing the required coursework, qualifying, annual progress seminars, pre-synopsis, synopsis, provisional acceptance of the dissertation, dissertation defense, and final submission of the dissertation.

Research Scholars, after obtaining a PhD degree from the EE department, are expected to play leadership roles in research and development in various disciplines of EE either in the industry or in academic institutes. Besides becoming faculty members at different academic institutions, several of our PhD graduates lead or work at research laboratories in private companies and government organizations across the world. Some of our PhD graduates have also started their own deep-tech startup companies that are doing quite well in their areas. The cut offs for different categories will be decided by the committee-in-charge for Ph.D. admissions of the DoMS of IIT Kanpur. The approved norms on reservation (OBC: 27%, SC: 15%, ST: 7.5% and PH 3% horizontal across GN, SC, ST and OBC) will be observed. NIT Students Can Pursue PhD at IIT Delhi Without Any GATE Scores

From the next year, NIT students don’t need to appear for GATE exam in order to pursue PhD courses at the premise of IIT Delhi.

From the upcoming year 2020, The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi will allow BTech students from the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) to get admission in its PhD programmes without even appearing for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) exam.

Under the new admission policy, NIT candidates will need to score a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 8 and above and get an opportunity to join the IIT Delhi to pursue PhD courses.

Admission Policy for NIT students –

Students who are enrolled under National Institute of Technology will have to score a CGPA (cumulative grade point average) of 8 by the end of their third year (6 th Semester) of the BTech programme will be able to sit for an interview round, which will be the deciding factor for admission into the PhD course. Shortlisted students will be capable to take admission in PhD directly without appearing for GATE exam. This scheme is only applicable for the students who are enrolled under 4 th year of BTech course at astonishing NITs premise across the country.

The examination and teaching pattern at NITs is comparatively similar to IITs. Students at both the institutes are selected based on their astounding capabilities and talent. Explaining the procedure, Mr. V Ramgopal Rao, Director, IIT Delhi said, “NIT students, who have a CGPA of 8 and above in the third year of their academic course and are interested in research will get direct admission in IIT Delhi for completing their final year here. After that, they can continue to pursue their PhD studies in the institute as well.”

Improved Culture of Research

The idea of shortlisting NIT students into IITs has been discussed for the past one year and the initiative has been taken to attract the meritorious candidates and encourage the right research talent to improve the overall research ecosystem. The IIT Delhi Directors says, “The idea behind getting NIT candidates into the IIT is to improve the research culture and we want students who have the potential for research to join our institute” .

Students who will be shortlisted require spending a minimum of six months or completing a project with the IIT during their last year of B.Tech before they can start with their PhD programmes.

Typically the notification comes out in the month of Nov and in the month of April. The applications received are screened by the individual departments and the successful applicants will be called for a written test and interview. The financial assistance for the PhD program under MoE (Ministry of Education) category across all departments is 5 years.

May 20, 2023: Candidates shortlisted for written test has been informed though their regsitered email. Please check your spam folder also.

May 09, 2023: Candidates shortlisted based on the written test performance will be called for interviews at IITH campus. The interviews will be held on the 9th June 2023. Requests for online interviews will not be considered.

May 09, 2023: The online written test for the PhD program will be held on 27th May 2023, from 10 am. Details about the modalities of the test will be informed to the shortlisted candidates by email. Shortlisting is currently under progress, and is expected to be completed by early next week.

The Department of AI at IIT Hyderabad helps in creating a complete ecosystem for AI Academics and Research at IIT Hyderabad. The department offers B.Tech, M.Tech. and PhD programs (full time and part time). The emergence of the department is the consequence of the heavy demand from the industry on artificial intelligence and data analytics, and the need to tackle the many fundamental and foundational research problems arising in a rapidly evolving field. The department's mission is to

Eligibility Criteria for Application to the PhD program:

The Eligibility criteria for regular PhD program is MTech/Equivalent Degree in CS/ECE/EE or related areas in Artificial Intelligence. The applicant must have already earned the Master's degree, or should at least be in the final year of the respective pro-gram. In the latter case, it would be assumed that the candidate will be able to complete the degree by the time of admission into the PhD program. Candidates with MSc/MCA/equivalent PG degree with an EMDS at IIT-H may apply for Regular PhD program.

The Department of AI considers Direct-PhD admission , where the eligibility criteria is BTech/BE/MCA/MSc/Equivalent Degree in any engineering discipline or Maths, and have a valid GATE score in CS/EC/EE/MA/ST. Candidate with BTech/BE/MCA/MSc/Equivalent Degree in any engineering discipline or Maths from any Centrally Funded Technological Institutes (CFTI), with CGPA 9 or above can apply without a valid GATE score (For candidates from IITs/NITs/IIITs this is relaxed to CGPA 8 or above).

The Department of AI also considers Direct-Phd admission , where the eligibility criteria is BTech/BE/MCA/MSc/Equivalent Degree in any engineering discipline or Maths, and have a valid GATE score in CS/EC/EE/MA/ST. Candidate with B.Tech/M.Sc in any engineering discipline or Maths from any Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), with CGPA 8 or above can apply without a valid GATE score

Department also admit students to the part time PhD program . Part time PhD program have the same eligibility criteria listed above and in addition the candidate must be employed with a relevant employer at the time of application and admission.

For admission to the program, there will be a preliminary shortlisting depending upon the academic background. Candidates who satisfy the shortlisting criteria need to appear for a written test and/or an interview. The shortlisting criteria could be higher than the eligibility criteria. In addition, the department also reserves the right to set any cut off criteria for shortlisting the candidates and not to select anybody if no appropriate candidates are found.

IIT Hyderabad has a centralized online application portal for the PhD admission. Candidates are requested to visit IITH PHD Admissions for the application format and the submission link. Candidates applying for any of the PhD program are requested to submit their application through the portal. Yes, It is possible. If you have 8.0 and above B.E or B.Tech Cgpa from any IIT of CFU you get admission in any IIT of NIT without entrance exams. One more you have to clear interview conducted by particular IIT in which you want to get admission. You can also do PHD being sponsored from reputed industry like HAL and ISRO( seats are also reserved for this sponsorship) You can also join research assistantship provided by IITs. If you have teaching experience in well known college no need of GATE for phd or m.tech in iit. But now if you are fresher or not an IITian you have to clear GATE compulsorily.

MTech Admission without GATE -  IISc Bangalore has released the GATE 2024 scorecard on its official website following the announcement of GATE Result 2024 . Candidates who do not have a good rank or score in GATE 2024 can still be eligible for admission to top institutes like IITs, NITs, and IIITs. For those, who are unaware,  M. Tech admission  to these institutes is mostly done through national and state-level entrance exams. However, besides GATE these top MTech colleges also offer admission through sponsorship, and Quality Improvement Program (QIP) Other than this, certain top institutes offer MTech admission based on merit i.e. through direct admission or. MTech admission 2024 without GATE in government colleges such as IITs and NITs have certain provisions. Candidates aspiring for MTech direct admission at IIT or NIT must be a BTech graduate of an IIT and they must have a CGPA of 8 or above to be eligible for direct admission. There are certain cases through which candidates can MTech direct admission into IITs, and NITs without GATE scores. These cases include -

Sponsored Candidates

Candidates who have a working experience of more than 3 years and are ready to prove that they are in a stable state to apply for higher education can apply for MTech admission 2024 without GATE in government colleges such as IITs and NITs. If you are worried about how to do MTech in IIT without GATE? There are reserved seats for such sponsored candidates in top institutes like IITs and NITs. 

Quality Improvement Program (QIP)

Quality Improvement Program (QIP) was initiated by the government of India for the teaching staff having 3+ years of experience in the teaching field by giving them a chance to attend India’s topmost engineering schools. The All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) established the QIP initiative to improve the quality of technical education in India. As part of the QIP, IITs, NITs, and other government-funded engineering colleges provide places to candidates who do not have a GATE score. IISc, IITs and NITs offer regular M.Tech seats to candidates who have been sponsored by their employers. These candidates don’t need to appear for the GATE entrance exam for admission to M.Tech programmes.

Eligibility Criteria for M.Tech Sponsored Seats at IISc, IITs and NITs

Candidates must have completed B Tech or B.E. with the minimum qualifying marks (vary from institute to institute).

Candidates applying for M.Tech through sponsored seats must have worked for more than 2 years.

Candidates should have been granted 2-year study leave by their employers.

The employer must take the responsibility to provide financial support for the candidate throughout the 2-year course.

Some of the IITs and NITs may also conduct their own written test for admission to M.Tech programmes through sponsored seats. Also read:  IOCL Cutoff through GATE 2024

Some of the IIITs conduct their own entrance exams for admission to the M.Tech programme. If you want to cut down the competition and want better chances of selection as compared to admission through GATE, you can appear for these M.Tech entrance tests conducted by IIITs.

There are various central and state universities that admit students on the basis of GATE as well as their separate entrance exams. You will find that some of the central, as well as the state, universities reserve some M.Tech seats for admission through GATE and the remaining seats, are filled on the basis of their own M.Tech entrance exams.

However, there are some universities that conduct admission only on the basis of their own M.Tech entrance test. Following are some universities where you can apply without a GATE score by taking their exams.

You can opt for sponsored seats available in IITs, IISCs, and NITs to appear for specific MTech entrance exams at private institutes or pursue an MS degree abroad which will require you to submit GRE as well as language proficiency scores as part of the admission process.  

Yes, there are many entrance exams other than GATE exam that help in admission to MTech courses. These include VITMEE, IPU CET, IIT Delhi MTech Entrance Exam, etc.  

Yes, you can take admission in IITs without GATE exam through the sponsored quota and the Quality Improvement Program (QIP).

No, GATE entrance exam is not compulsory for MTech courses. There are other entrance exams other than GATE such as IPU CET that offer admission to MTech courses. If you are looking for direct admission, there are certain reservations such as Sponsored Candidates, and Quality Improvement Programs (QIP).  

Some top institutes that offer admission to MTech courses in India are IIT Mandi, Delhi Technology University (DTU), NIT Jalandhar, Anna University, Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai, UEM Kolkata, etc.   

For direct admission to MTech courses, one must have a BTech degree with at least 55% marks. If the candidate has a sponsored seat, they must have worked for at least 3 years. They must be given a two year study leave by the employee and the employer must take accountability to deliver financial support for the course.  

Yes, you can take admission to NIT without GATE exam. For that, you have to meet the basic eligibility criteria and have a minimum experience of 3 years.  

If you do not qualify for GATE but want to pursue MTech, there are several options open for you. There are several entrance exams that assist in admission to MTech courses without GATE or you can join the top IITs, NITs and IIITs through sponsored quota and the Quality Improvement Program (QIP).  

Candidates should have obtained a qualitative minimum of 60% / 6.0 CPI for admission to Banaras Hindu University for MTech course.
