Course summary

The PhD in Public Health meets the needs of those wishing to gain a deep and critical insight into public health theory, research and practice and to develop or enhance research skills whilst fulfilling their existing responsibilities. The programme is offered part-time and combines innovative distance learning with face-to-face teaching at an annual autumn Academy held in Lancaster.

The programme is suitable for both UK-based and international students involved in the delivery of public health services, working in policy development relating to public health in government departments and NGOs, being responsible for educational programmes in colleges and universities or working in public health research and development.

This part-time, flexible doctorate runs over a minimum of four and a maximum of seven years. The programme begins with a compulsory five-day Induction Academy in Lancaster. Each of the subsequent academic years start with a compulsory three-day autumn Academy, while the rest of the course is delivered via e-learning. Attendance at the annual academies is compulsory until students have been confirmed on the PhD programme.

Years 1 and 2 consist of taught modules delivered online. In Year 1 students take a specialist module that covers the theory and practice of public health followed by a module on research philosophy and a module on research design. Year 2 modules may include: Systematic Reviews, Data Analysis, Research Design and Practical Research Ethics.

From Year 3 onwards, students undertake an independent research study, which concludes with the submission of a thesis that makes an original contribution to knowledge. The research project will be supervised from the University but undertaken in students’ own location or workplace. Supervision meetings take place using video conferencing software such as Skype. During the annual autumn Academy students meet with supervisors face to face.

The programme brings together the theory and practice of mental health, including psychological models of psychological disorders, evidence-based interventions and current priorities for mental health. Whether you are based within a healthcare setting, local government, education, research or management, the PhD in Mental Health is your chance to work with world-leading academics on the production of a thesis that makes an original contribution to knowledge within your area of professional practice.

A number of mental health research groups work from Lancaster University’s prestigious Division of Health Research. For example, the Spectrum Centre, which has attracted more than £6m in funding since its launch, is the only specialist research centre in the UK dedicated to translational research into the psychosocial aspects of bipolar disorder and associated conditions (including recurrent depression, anxiety, and psychosis), as well as developments in their treatment. Other staff research interests include mental health in people with chronic physical conditions or difficulties and ensuring positive mental health among socially marginalised groups.

Our close links to NHS mental health services in the North West of England and the voluntary sector, both regionally and nationally, combine with the current research interests of staff to inform the content of our modules. Service users will also be actively involved in the delivery of the taught component of your Doctorate.

We may ask you to provide a recognised English language qualification, dependent upon your nationality and where you have studied previously.

We normally require an IELTS (Academic) Test with an overall score of at least 6.5, and a minimum of 6.0 in each element of the test. We also consider other English language qualifications.

Average student cost of living in the UK

London costs approx 34% more than average, mainly due to rent being 67% higher than average of other cities. For students staying in student halls, costs of water, gas, electricity, wifi are generally included in the rental. Students in smaller cities where accommodation is in walking/biking distance transport costs tend to be significantly smaller.

The successful candidate will join the Centre for Corpus Linguistic Approaches to Safeguarding Studies, funded as part of the ESRC Large Grant ESY002709/1, and will work alongside other researchers involved in researching in various aspects of the family justice system.

Project title: Mapping and classifying global safeguarding and family justice system models.

Project description: Global child protection approaches differ, but little research has been conducted to draw out underpinning paradigms, or to conduct global evaluations. This Ph.D. offers the opportunity for study of a representative sample of global systems to investigate how they are chosen, constructed, applied, and operated. The project will contribute to creating a new means of classifying global systems, and to creating a new corpus of comparative documentation.

This project offers the opportunity for investigation of global legal and policy frameworks for safeguarding, child protection and family justice system. The project includes collating written data from online sources to identify global law and policy documentation, collected from a representative range of jurisdictions, and contribution to building a model and stage classification system for comparative purposes.

The project will contribute to law and policy development, and corpus linguistics in legal studies.

Eligibility: Candidates must hold an undergraduate degree at 2:1 or above in law, and an appropriate master’s degree (for example comparative law, international law, child protection, family law, linguistics) with a minimum overall grade at ‘merit’. Evidence of publishable standard project work is desirable. If you are eligible to apply for the scholarship but do not hold a UK degree, you can check our comparative entry requirements. Please note you may have to provide evidence of your English language proficiency.

Additional Funding Information: Due to funding restrictions, this scholarship is open to applicants eligible to pay tuition fees at the UK rate only. This scholarship covers the full cost of UK tuition fees and an annual stipend at the current UKRI rate.

Lancaster University Management School (LUMS) are offering three-year PhD studentships in Business & Management, under the auspices of the North West Social Sciences Doctoral Training Partnership. Programmes are available in the following areas:

• Management (Entrepreneurship and Strategy)

• Management Science

We are looking for highly-motivated doctoral candidates to join our international community of researchers and students from more than 180 countries. Through the North West Social Sciences Doctoral Training Partnership, we offer fully-funded PhDs for UK, EU and overseas students wishing to study on one of the above doctoral programmes.

LUMS is a quadruple-accredited, world-ranked management school, that has a reputation for outstanding research. In the UK’s latest Research Excellence Framework, REF 2021, we were rated as first for Research Power – recognising the breadth and depth of our work – and joint-first for our research environment, providing the perfect platform for future research talent to develop and flourish. In REF 2021, 90% of our research was rated world-leading or internationally excellent. Our commitment to high-quality doctoral research is demonstrated by LUMS PhD graduates obtaining academic, research and consultancy positions in quality institutions around the globe.

Our PhD Business & Management pathway programmes offer advanced research training courses, high-quality supervision by internationally-recognised academics, and participation in the School’s wider research community, making your PhD experience challenging and rewarding.

LUMS is part of the ESRC North West Social Sciences Doctoral Training Partnership, together with the Universities of Liverpool and Manchester. Fully-funded studentships are offered through this partnership for UK, EU and Overseas students. You will need to have been offered a place on one of the above programmes before being put forward for ESRC funding. We will also be offering funded LUMS studentships and all the applicants for the ESRC competition will be also considered for this internal funding.

To join our world-leading research environment, candidates must have an excellent first degree and outstanding Masters level degree performance. Qualifications should be in a related discipline to your intended PhD studies.

Full-time studentships will commence in October 2024 for research proposals that align with the research interests of the relevant department and that will enhance the research reputation of LUMS. All studentships pay a generous living allowance and offer a fee waiver for three years.

The QS World University Rankings 2025 are now live ! 

Being the first of its kind to incorporate both employability and sustainability factors into the methodology , the QS World University Rankings provides the higher education sector, governments and students a reliable rankings system that identifies the world’s leading universities in a range of performance metrics. 

This year’s ranking is the largest – featuring 1,500 universities from 106 countries and territories across the globe. For the thirteenth consecutive year Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US has placed first. 

Who are the top ten universities in the QS World University Rankings 2025? 

1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), US 

2. Imperial College London, UK 

3. University of Oxford, UK 

4. Harvard University, US 

5. University of Cambridge, UK 

6. Stanford University, US 

7. ETH Zürich – Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Switzerland 

8. National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore 

9. University College London, UK 

10. California Institute of Technology (Caltech), US 

Notably, Imperial College London has moved up four places – the biggest improvement among the top ten.  Their progress is attributed to several factors, including their improvement in the ‘Sustainability’ category, (scoring 99.7 out of 100 overall) and in various research metrics including ‘Citations per faculty’, which they earned 86.5 last year, compared to a total of 93.9 this year, for example. 

New entrants  

There are 21 newly ranked institutions in the QS World University Rankings 2025, with the highest debutant being the American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK) in the United Arab Emirates, with a ranking of 485th – the University scored 100 in indicators ‘International students’ and ‘International faculty’.  

Global highlights of the QS World University Rankings 2025 

China and India’s universities have seen the biggest upward movements for both the number of institutions increasing their ranking position and for the number of significant moves (defined as 10 places or more) in the QS World University Rankings 2025.

Other highlights in institutional performance globally are: 

The UK’s strongest performance is in the ‘International Student Ratio’ indicator. It achieves the world’s second-highest average score among countries with ten or more ranked universities, behind only Saudi Arabia – underscoring the global appeal of UK higher education institutions and their ability to attract a diverse student body. 

The US continues to boast one of the world’s most renowned higher education systems for their reputation, according to employers and academics – this is clear in the ranking as four of the top ten universities, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Harvard University, Stanford University and University of California, Berkeley (UCB) earn 100 in the ‘Academic reputation’ indicator. 

Canada  

Canadian universities are performing exceptionally in ‘Sustainability’, with two universities among the world’s top five, including the world’s most sustainable institution, the University of Toronto . 

Australia  

Three Australian institutions are in the world’s top 20 – with the University of Melbourne and the University of Sydney each climbing one position to 13th and 18th respectively. Australia also dominates in ‘International research’ in the Asia-Pacific region, claiming nine of the top 10 positions. 

Africa  

South Africa holds the African continent’s top four positions in the rankings – with the University of Cape Town (ranked 171st) being the continent’s highest-ranked institution, an improvement of two places from the previous year. Cairo University (Egypt) completed the top five in Africa, ranking 350th globally. 

Latin America  

Latin America has four representatives in the top 100, one from each of its four largest economies: Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA) in Argentina (71st); Universidade de São Paulo in Brazil (92nd); Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (UC) in Chile (93rd); and Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in Mexico (94th).

Admission Information for Our PhD in Psychology

Admission requirements.

• A non-refundable, non-transferable $50 application fee will be posted on the current application upon enrollment (waived for qualifying service members, veterans, and military spouses – documentation verifying military status is required) .
• Send official college transcripts (mailed as sealed, unopened copies or sent via a direct electronic transcript system). A regionally or nationally accredited master’s degree with at least a 3.0 GPA is required for admission in good standing.
• Contact information  for 2 recommenders is required (approved recommenders are the student’s former college professors or supervisors).
• Statement of Purpose  is required (1,000-1,500 words, double spaced).
• Departmental approval is required.
• Applicants whose native language is other than English must submit official scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or an approved alternative assessment. For information on alternative assessments or TOEFL waivers, please call Admissions or view the official International Admissions policy .

Preliminary Acceptance

If you are sending in a preliminary transcript for acceptance, you must:

• Be in your final term and planning to start your doctoral degree after the last day of class for your master’s degree.
• Complete a Master’s Self-Certification Form confirming your completion date. You may download the form from the Forms and Downloads page or contact an admissions counselor to submit the form on your behalf.
• Submit an official transcript to confirm that you are in your final term. The preliminary transcript must show that you are within 6 credit hours of completion for a 30-48 credit hour master’s degree or within 9 credit hours of completion for a 49+ credit hour master’s degree.
• Send in an additional, final official transcript with a conferral date on it by the end of your first semester of enrollment in the new doctoral degree.
